GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS Students are required to earn 27 units of credit including: • 4 years of English • 3 years of Science • 4 years of Religious Studies • 2 years of World • 3 years of History/Social Languages and/or Fine Arts Science • 1.5 years of Physical • 3 years of Mathematics Education/Health

Carmel Catholic uses the university model rotation schedule which allows 70-minute classes twice every three days. Students must take a total of seven classes each semester during freshman, sophomore and junior year. Seniors are required to take six classes; they have the option of a seventh class or early dismissal.

HONORS & AP CLASSES A variety of Honors and AP courses are offered to high performing and motivated students. There are 19 AP and 57 Honors courses offered at Carmel Catholic. In spring 2014, 290 students took AP exams. Forty-eight percent earned a score of four or five, well above state and global averages.

TECHNOLOGY IN THE CLASSROOM In 2012, Carmel Catholic launched the 1:1 Student Computing program, positioning Carmel Catholic as the leading digital high school in Lake County and among the first in the Chicago area. The program enables each student to have his or her own tablet computer. Additionally, each classroom is fully equipped with a screen projector and sound system that attaches to the teacher’s laptop.

Should an issue arise with a student’s tablet, the Tab Lab is open throughout the school day for expert technology support.

INFORMATION COMMONS Carmel Catholic recently renovated, expanded and upgraded its library to transform it into a state-of-the-art Information Commons. New features include: • Small group study rooms • 10-station Mac Computer Lab • Audio/Video Production Studio CARLOS J. SERNA LEARNING RESOURCE CENTER The Serna Center was established in 2009 to serve students who have an active Individualized Education Plan (IEP) or 504 Accommodation Plan by offering assistance from certified learning resource specialists.

CHRISTIAN SERVICE PROGRAM Carmel Catholic believes that the spiritual growth students experience through ministry to others will lead to a lifetime commitment to service. All students participate in the school’s Christian Service Program, which requires each student to perform 20 hours of service to the community each semester. Upon graduation, 160 hours of Christian service will have been completed.

PRAYER All class periods, assemblies, school liturgies, athletic events and extracurriculars begin in prayer.

KAIROS RETREAT Seniors participate in a Kairos retreat one time during their high school experience. Described by many students as “life-changing,” these four-day faculty and studentled retreats give young people a chance to see God at work in their daily lives.

Services

The Student Services Department provides the following types of services to students: ACADEMIC SERVICES Guidance counselors assist students with questions involving their academic life, career plans and college applications. Students are assigned a counselor for all four years of their Carmel Catholic journey.

COLLEGE AND CAREER RESOURCES The College and Career Resource Center helps students gain acceptance into some of the finest universities in the nation by guiding students and parents each step of the way. Carmel Catholic’s college counseling program begins during sophomore year when students gain insights into their academic strengths and interests. During junior year, students have the opportunity to meet representatives from colleges and universities during the school day or during numerous College Resource Nights held throughout the year.

SOCIAL SERVICES The school social worker assists students with making healthy life choices by offering a variety of support services including individual counseling, support groups and outside counseling referrals.

Performing Arts

Carmel Catholic’s outstanding Fine and Performing Arts curriculum allows students to gain a broad understanding and appreciation of the arts. There are diverse opportunities to excel in vocal, instrumental, performing and visual arts.

Admissions

THE ADMISSIONS PROCESS

Step 1: Take the Entrance Exam All students entering ninth grade must take the entrance exam, which will be administered on Saturday, January 10, 2015 at 8 a.m.

Following the exam, the admissions committee reviews the test scores and admissions application. Test reservations are not necessary.

Step 2: Apply Complete and return the application for admission with all requested information to Carmel Catholic High School by January 23, 2015.

Step 3: Acceptance Once your application is reviewed, you will receive a decision letter in mid-February.

Factors that influence admission to Carmel Catholic include: the prospective student’s entrance exam score, junior high school report cards, previous standardized test scores, participation in co-curricular activities, the junior high school attended by the student, as well as alumni relationships with Carmel Catholic.

TUITION AND FEES Tuition for the 2014-2015 school year is $10,350.

There are additional fees for athletics, certain classes, course materials and some clubs. All freshman applicants are required to make a $400 deposit at the time of application. Students who are not accepted to Carmel Catholic will be refunded their application fee.

Carmel Catholic offers three payment plans: payment in full, two-payment plan (one payment at the beginning of each semester) and a monthly plan.

FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE Carmel Catholic has a financial aid assistance program available to families who qualify. For the 2014-2015 school year, Carmel Catholic awarded more than $1.2 million in financial assistance.

Upon completion of the admissions application, families must complete a confidential financial assistance application and submit it to the outside vendor who evaluates the application. • Early Consideration (incoming freshman only): Submit your application for financial aid by January 30, 2015 and provide all necessary support documentation by February 6, 2015.

You will receive results of your financial aid in February. • Standard Consideration: Submit your application for financial aid and all necessary support documentation by April 1, 2015.You will receive results of your application in early June.

SCHOLARSHIP OPPORTUNITIES In addition to the financial assistance offered by Carmel Catholic, a number of partial scholarships are awarded, including entrance exam scholarships, parishoffered scholarships and minority scholarships.

Shadow Day: SEPTEMBER-MAY To get a first-hand look at Carmel Catholic, we encourage 7th and 8th grade and transfer students to spend a day with us for Carmel’s most popular program. During a Shadow Day, visiting students are paired with a Carmel student for the day. We have found that visitors who participate in this unique Shadow Day experience are less apprehensive about their pending high school experience. Sign up for a Shadow Day by visiting the “Admissions” page on carmelhs.org and filling out a Shadow Day Request Form.

Personal Tour: DAILY A personal tour can be scheduled during most school days. Tours last approximately an hour and can be arranged by contacting the Director of Admissions.
