Now that summer is now almost of�icially upon us and most days there is more warmth in the air, there is also evidence of many bug-like critters enjoying the sun! The world of insects is fascinating as to the gardener their life cycle, the colonies they may live in and their ability to hunt for food all makes them rather remarkable. Even the thought of those little critters walking across your garden in perspective must be like walking from Saskatoon to Regina or Edmonton depending on the size of your garden area.

Sometimes the response by gardeners to any of these critters is to squish or spray now and be rid of those ugly and damaging pests! However, not all bugs/ insects are a danger to the plants in our gardens – not all of the little critters are bad! Some present a more neutral side, doing neither harm nor good, happily living their life in the garden world. Other critters are helpful to the gardener by feeding on insects that do harm to our plants thus providing us with safe biological controls for some of the most common garden pests. Nature is also a remarkable thing with creating a balance that we as stewards of the land constantly disrupt. It is important for all gardeners and other stewards of the land to learn about the individual critter and its life cycle to determine whether it is friend or foe!

Bene�icial insects (sometimes referred to as biocontrol agents) are naturally in nature or readily available to farmers, growers and others. They fall into two basic categories with some being predatory and some being more parasitic in nature. Some do a little “host feeding” of both the parasitic and predatory nature.

Some of the common predacious bene�icial are beetles, wasps, mites, and true bugs. The more parasitic bene�icial are often mini-wasps and nematodes.

Introducing any biological control can be very effective but does not act like a pesticide solution.

For instance if you have a �ly problem, you can spray a multitude of products on these �lies and effectively gain control for a while. However, the �lies evolve quite quickly and often become more immune to the chemical control agents, which in turn causes us to use more toxic products to gain the same control. A biological works by interrupting the life cycle of the problem critter, (in this case the �ly) and over time gains control of the population. This is not an instant �ix but takes some time to be effective. The predator or parasite grows in number in response to the host and then decreases in number as the host dies off. This is a somewhat similar scenario to the coyote and the rabbit, or many other examples in our ecosystem.

It was my personal introduction into the bene�icial world when I was a intensive livestock producer and gave an ideal environment to the many species of �lies by providing livestock, bedding debris and my home landscape to aid them in living a happy life. As I am less than enamored with �lies, I strove to �ind a control measure that was sustainable but also economically feasible and effective. I discovered parasitic wasps whose only purpose in life is to source out the pupae of �lies, and lay their eggs in those pupae. The parasitic wasp larvae develop, consume the �ly and hatch into the adult form of a parasitic wasp and happily look for more �ly pupae to procreate. Over time, what results with the correct level of application – is NO MORE FLIES! For me and countless others who embrace this method of control we now enjoy a much more pleasant outdoor experience – even if we do

keep critters!!

There are many other bene�icial in our outdoor living space. These include ladybugs, lacewings, ground beetles, minute pirate bugs, syrphid �lies and many more. In order to truly enjoy the world of bene�icials, it is important to remember that many of these tiny and not so tiny critters may have a different appearance depending on the stage of their lifecycle.

Afterall, before the butter�ly, comes the worm!

Bear Claw Casino: Southeast Sask.’s premier gaming attraction

By Chris L. Istace The history of gaming in Saskatchewan begins at the White Bear First Nation located along Highway 9 just 15 kilometers north of Carlyle, Sask. More than two decades later, one of the province’s �irst casinos is attracting visitors from all over North America and the world.

The Bear Claw Casino and Hotel provides some respite from the wild, forested hills surrounding the facility. Located between White Bear Lake and Moose Mountain Provincial Park – both known for their hills, bogs, bush, lakes and abundant wildlife – the �lashing, bright lights of the casino stand out among the trees at night, inviting travellers to visit for a game, a beverage or some live entertainment.

The 30,000 square-foot gaming �loor has about 140 slot machines and three live gaming tables, while entertainment is a regular part of its weekend atmosphere. Included in the games is the Saskatchewan Indian Gaming Authority’s “Smoke Signals” slot machine with a multi-progressive jackpot that at times reaches hundreds of thousands of dollars. Blackjack tournaments are scheduled to take place July 21 and September 22.

Currently on the entertainment calendar through the summer is an Open Mic Night every Saturday through July. Later in August, two country music bands will appear at the Bear Claw. The British Columbian �ive-piece, Me and Mae! will perform on Aug. 24 followed by recording artist Lauren Mayell on Aug. 25.

Before then, however, the excitement of rodeo entertainment will hit the facility. The Bear Claw Casino Buck-a-Rama returns on Aug. 8 and 9 after a three-year hiatus. The event will host 30 competitors

from Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba competing in rough-stock contests including bull riding, bareback bronc riding and saddle bronc riding. World Champion Hoop Dancer Terrance Littletent will highlight the intermission entertainment both days.

But gaming is not Bear Claw’s only attraction. The hotel provides accommodations to outdoor enthusiasts enjoying the area’s untamed wilderness alongside golfers playing some of the best 18-hole facilities in the province at the White Golf Course to the south and Golf Kenosee to the north. Three different room styles provide comfort for anyone’s needs, from the standard room that sleeps four to a King Executive Suite with its jacuzzi spa tub.

The Bear Claw Hotel rooms – all non-smoking

– include a mini-fridge, a microwave oven, ironing boards and hair dryers. Children under the age of 12 stay free when accompanied by an adult and some rooms have been set aside for visitors with pets.

The hotel also has indoor access to the gaming �loor alongside a �itness centre, WiFi service, and complimentary continental breakfast.

Meanwhile, gaming enthusiasts and hotel guests can grab a meal and a beverage in Growlers Restaurant and Lounge, also located on the property.

By Chris L. Istace The Oxbow Chiefs served the Redvers A’s a 10-7 loss on June 19 to maintain a half-game grip over the Estevan Tower Wolves for �irst place with nine wins and a loss in the Saskota Baseball League standings last week.

The Chiefs have been dominating their competition offensively, scoring an average of 12 runs per game while giving up �ive against. Only Estevan and the Carnduff Astros are out-performing Oxbow on defense with four weeks left in the league’s regular season schedule. The Tower Wolves give up just 3.5 runs per game, while Carnduff has allowed an average of 4.8.

The Tower Wolves hold second spot with eight wins, a loss and a game-in-hand with the Chiefs.

After eight games played, the Carlyle Cardinals maintained third with six wins, a loss and a tie.

The rest of the standings have the Arcola

Threshers in fourth with a 5-3-0 record; the Carnduff Astros in �ifth with two wins, four losses and a tie; the Redvers A’s in sixth with three wins and six losses; the Windthorst Pirates (3-7-0) in seventh; and the Kipling Royals in eighth at 2-5-0. It should be noted, however, Kipling had two games-in-hand over Redvers and three over Windthorst at press time.

The bottom two teams include the Kenosee Cubs (1-5-0), and the Southeast Fireballs (1-7-0).

Results from 12 games were not available at the Summer Time deadline, but �ive games occurred June 15 to 19, the halfway point in the season. All three games on June 14 were postponed due to rain.

The Windthorst Pirates dropped a pair of games on June 15 and 18, losing 12-10 at home to the Kipling Royals, then falling 19-5 to Carlyle. On June 19, Oxbow defeated Redvers, the Carnduff Astros knocked over the Kipling Royals 3-1 and the Tower Wolves edged the Arcola Threshers 7-6.

This week’s Saskota Baseball League action includes three games scheduled for Thursday. Windthorst is in Arcola, the Kenosee Cubs visit Kipling and the Southeast Fireballs meet Estevan.

Only one game is scheduled for the Canada Day Long weekend, with the the Fireballs and the Threshers clashing on Monday evening. Tuesday’s schedule includes Oxbow at Southeast, Kenosee at Carnduff, Kipling at Redvers and Carlyle at Arcola. All games begin at 6:30 p.m.

How golfers hate those bunkers!

Bunkers are the nightmare of many a golfer, causing huge frustration and quickly ruining a golf score. As in all aspects of the game, the right technique and regular practice with a sand wedge is the key to success.

Getting out of a sand trap successfully means taking an open stance and positioning yourself with the ball centred between your feet. Right-handed golfers should align their shoulders slightly to the left of the target. Don’t grip the club too tightly.

Then all you have to do is open the clubface, hit about three centimetres behind the ball, and complete your swing. When all is said and done, it is the sand that propels the ball out of the bunker. If your swing is too short, or if you don’t open up your clubface enough, your ball may very well stay in the

Bunkers can cause a lot of frustration for golfers. sand. On the other hand, by hitting the ball directly there’s a good chance that it will end up on the other side of the green.

If the sand trap is fairly shallow and there is a good distance between you and the �lag, a pitch-

ing wedge or a 9 iron may be used in order to roll the ball.

In short, the aim of most golfers is to get out of the bunker on the �irst shot and thus avoid a catastrophic score. In order to improve your technique

and feel at ease in this type of obstacle, don’t hesitate to ask for some tips from your golf pro.

What’s more, many golf courses have sand traps on their practice ranges, enabling golfers to perfect their technique.

By Chris L. Istace At �irst glance, the Redvers and District Golf and Country Club may seem like a simple, ninehole facility. The layout portrayed on the scorecard shows open fairways with minimal challenge, with six holes sporting slight doglegs and three holes having dead-straight looks at the pin.

But a video tour of the course found at the Town of Redvers website (redvers.ca) suggests golfers not judge it without a practice round.

Located at the Junction of Saskatchewan Highways 8 and 13, Redvers lays in grain country, but hints of the Moose Mountain glacial moraine formation to the northwest are present with the course containing plenty of wet, marshland. Every hole has some sort of water hazard and hitting a ball into the reedy bogs is guaranteed to cost you penalty strokes.

Whatever dif�iculty these hazards provide are balanced with wide, well-manicured fairways and spacious greens. The installation of the grass putting surfaces were ready for play in 2001 and irrigation was added to the course three years later, providing lush playing conditions.

The course is 3057 yards in length from its blue tee boxes and contains �ive par-four holes, two par�ives and two par-threes for a total-par of 36. The longest hole is No. 4, a 519-yard trek with a slight dogleg to the left.

Three holes later, golfers �ind the shortest pin on the course. No. 7 reaches just 158 yards, but tees off from behind a thick, marshy water hazard.

The Redvers Golf and Country Club’s new clubhouse is entering its fourth season of business and is a substantial move forward from the facility’s original home. When the club was �irst organized in 1966 with sand greens, its shelter was a grainery.

Today, the clubhouse contains a fully licensed eatery with a menu that includes various deepfried items, soups, salads and wraps. Special meals are prepared for Men’s Nights on Tuesdays, while Friday is Perogy Night and the �irst Saturday of every month during the summer season is Steak Night.

Both the men and women tee off on their respective nights at 5:30 p.m. Ladies Night is held every Thursday.

Various golf tournaments are hosted at the course throughout the season. Many have been completed through the month of June, but the remaining events include the Famers & Friends four-person, best ball tournament on June 27; the Oilmen’s Tournament on July 20; a Hole-InOne event on Sept. 15; and the Members Only Tournament on Sept. 23.

4 questions to ask before fueling your outdoor power equipment The season of the yard is upon us. Across America homeowners are opening up their garages and sheds and getting out their mowers, trimmers, blowers, power washers, and other outdoor power equipment.

The Outdoor Power Equipment Institute (OPEI), an international trade association representing more than 100 power equipment, engine, and utility vehicle manufacturers and suppliers, reminds homeowners to use smart fueling practices before starting their engines.

“You want your equipment available when you need it, and that starts with proper maintenance and fueling,” said Kris Kiser, OPEI President and CEO. “Always check which fuel you’re buying before �illing up.”

Here are four questions to ask before you start fueling outdoor power equipment: 1.

Have you read the owner’s manual for the equipment? Always follow manufacturer’s fueling recommendations and use the type of fuel speci�ied.

2.

Have you drained your equipment of old fuel from last season? Fuel should not sit in the tank for more than 30 days. Untreated gasoline (without a fuel stabilizer) left in the system will deteriorate, which may cause starting or running problems and, in some cases, damage to the fuel system.

3. Did you purchase the correct fuel? What goes in your car or truck may not be the correct fuel to use in your outdoor power equipment. There are many choices at the pump today, and you should only use E10 or less fuel in any outdoor power equipment.

Some gas stations may offer 15 percent ethanol (E15) gas or higher ethanol fuel blends, but any fuel containing greater than 10 percent ethanol can damage – and is illegal to use, says the Environmental Protection Agency – in small engine equipment not designed for it.

4. Are you using a fuel additive or the manufacturer’s fuel? Many manufacturers make fuel additives and fuels, sold at retail locations, to improve equipment performance and mitigate any fueling problems caused by ethanol-based fuels. Check with your manufacturer’s recommendations and make the best choice that will keep your equipment running strong all season.

ger. Before you start your machine, do a visual inspection. Make sure the safety guards are in place and that your equipment is in good shape,” adds Kiser. “You should also review the operating instructions and re-familiarize yourself with the controls before using your equipment.”

Keep two hands on the steering wheel, remain focused and attentive. Driver Distractions: * Distracted driving takes your eyes, and mind, off the road. Drivers engaged in visual-manual interactions with cell phones (i.e. texting) are up to eight times as likely to be involved in a crash (AAA Foundation for Traf�ic Safety, 2017). Eliminate distractions while driving, such as use of mobile phones, eating, drinking, adjusting entertainment or navigation systems, grooming, long conversations and smoking.

Automotive & Recreation Vehicle (RV) Safety: * Have your vehicle inspected prior to travelling to ensure your vehicle is in top operating condition and to avoid breakdowns during your summer travels. If unexpected breakdowns do occur, be sure to have access to a roadside assistance provider like CAA. The CAA Mobile App is also available to access roadside service

Vehicle batteries should also be checked and this can be easily completed at the CAA Care Centre at Regina Battery Depot, or at any CAA Approved Auto Repair Service The wheels on recreation vehicles, boat trailers and camper trailers should be checked as well. The wheel lug nuts need to be set to the proper torque to make sure they do not come loose or come off the trailer. Wheel bearings should be greased and adjusted annually and trailer suspension springs also need to be inspected for wear. Read the vehicle or RV owner’s manual for mechanical or maintenance information.

If you are riding a bicycle, you are considered – by – law – a vehicle on the road. If you dismount and walk alongside your bike, you are considered a pedestrian and have the same rights as a pedestrian. Always follow the rules of the road when riding on city streets and rural roads.

Plan your ride and avoid dangerous routes. To choose the best bicycle for you, consider size, frame, and seat height, as well as the type of roads or trials you ride on. Always wear a helmet. It’s important to be seen, be heard, and be ready. *

CAA, as a dedicated safety advocate for drivers, pedestrians, cyclists and travellers, has some useful information to help keep everyone safe this summer.

School Zone Safety: caask.ca/schoolzonesafety * School yards, playgrounds, and parks are still busy places for active children of all ages. Motorists, please drive with caution and reduce your speed. Observe the posted speed limit and regulated days and hours as some areas may still be designated for lower speed limits during the summer months. * A CAA survey has indicated that school zones are becoming more dangerous. Parents with young children are reporting an increase in unsafe driving practices in school zones, speci�ically speeding and distracted driving. * Children, never run out in traf�ic or between parked cars, buses or building. While walking, cycling, or playing, please don’t use your cell phones for texting, phoning or gaming. Be alert, keep your head up, look around and be aware of your surroundings. Camping season: how to choose your campground Are you planning to spend the summer on a campground? To help you choose the right one, here are four important points to consider: 1. The grounds Do the grounds seem clean and safe? What will the surrounding area be like? Will it be in the middle of nowhere, or near important services and activities that interest you? Who will your neighbours be? You’ll probably be looking for different campgrounds depending on whether you want absolute peace and quiet or more of an opportunity to socialize.

2. Campground features

Water slides, beaches, tennis courts, playgrounds — what kinds of features does the campground offer? Is there a restaurant on or near the grounds? And will you have access to the internet? If a member of your family has reduced mobility, ensure that the grounds can accommodate his or her needs. Do you like camping with your dog? Make sure the campsite allows fourlegged guests, and check for any rules regarding pets.

3. Activities Dance night, bingo, karaoke, picnics — what kinds of activities are organized for the camp-

ers? Will you be able to participate for free? Are there any other attractions or activities near the campground (miniature golf, for example)?

Camping in the rain — are you prepared?

To enjoy a dry holiday, inspect your tent and be sure it’s waterproof before heading into the wild.

Mother Nature isn’t always on our side when it comes to camping. The key to having a great time despite the rain? Preparation!

What to bring First, check that your tent is in good repair, paying special attention to the seams. Pack a plastic tarp or canvas for extra shelter (a covered cooking area, for example) or to put under your tent for added protection from the elements. Once you’re at the site, choose as high a campsite as possible to make sure your space doesn’t �lood. You should
