More container gardening Last week, we talked about how wonderful container gardening is and how it can make gardening easier! This week, let’s delve a little deeper into the plant material.

If you wish to grow edibles in your containers then there is actually a ton of different plants that can be grown. Use your imagination and make your containers attractive as well as the added bene�it of feeding you and yours. I plant everything in containers but remember to only plant what will �it the container until after harvest. For example, if you wish to plant tomatoes in a container you need to use a 15 to 20 gallon container so your tomato will �lourish and not dry out! Smaller plants like peppers or eggplant can use a container a little bit smaller or alternatively put 2 or 3 plants in the larger container.

If you are thinking of vegetables that are harvested for their root then it is important to plant the appropriate size for the container. My large pots will take full size parsnips or carrots but if you have smaller/shorter containers then there are a variety of mini vegetables you can grow. ‘Thorogreen’ beans, ‘Baby Head’ cabbage, ‘Early Sugar Midgit’ cantaloupe, ‘Bunny Bite’ carrots, ‘Little Minnie’ cucumbers, ‘Easter Egg’ eggplant, ‘Lady�inger’ potatoes are just a few of the tiny veggies available. Planting a container of spring onions is also a great idea. Nothing beats home grown veggies!

Some other things to consider that are both beautiful and edible include kale; nasturtium, calendula and bright lights swiss chard. Even better is the more you pick, the better they grow which is also true of your herbs. Even growing lettuce and greens that have different leaf shapes and colours are fair game. Mix some of these in with longer season kale and have a container that will be beautiful from spring to fall.

One of the most important things you need to remember is to grow what you will eat. However, do not be afraid to experiment as there are endless plants out there right now. Go for a tour of your top three garden centres and shop for the unique and beautiful!

Remember that you will have to feed your container garden in order to get any harvest. I like to use a slow release fertilizer when planting just in case I get

busy and forget to feed my veggies. Each watering I also use a dilute mixture of 20-20-20 for those edibles which we do not wish to bloom and a dilute mixture of a high phosphorus complete fertilizer for those edibles we need to see bloom and fruit.

By Chris L. Istace An 8-2 victory over the Arcola Threshers and a 24-18 win against the Carlyle Cardinals pushed the Oxbow Chiefs to the top of the Saskota Baseball League standings last week.

The victory over the former league-leading Cardinals gave Oxbow eight wins and a loss through nine games and bumped Carlyle to third spot with �ive wins, a tie and a loss.

The Estevan Tower Wolves maintained second after winning 16-0 versus the Southeast Fireballs on June 7 and collecting a pair of 9-2 victories over the Windthorst Pirates and the Kipling Royals on June 10.

This left them with a record of seven wins and a loss at press time.

Oxbow’s win over Carlyle also helped the team maintain a perfect home-�ield record after four

games. However, both Estevan and the Cardinals are also unbeaten on their own diamonds. The former had only played two games in Estevan thus far, while the latter had only one home game.

Elsewhere in the league, the Redvers A’s knocked over the Kenosee Cubs 11-10 on June 7, then dropped a 10-2 decision to Arcola on June 8. Arcola sits in fourth place with �ive wins and two losses through seven games.

On June 10, the Kipling Royals defeated the Southeast Fireballs 8-6, but Southeast rebounded the same day with a 5-4 victory over Windthorst.

The Saskota Baseball action on June 12 included Arcola’s 12-2 win over Kenosee, a 9-6 win for the Carnduff Astros over the Fireballs – which is the Astros’ �irst victory of the season – and Windthorst over Redvers 6-3.

League play continued Thursday, Friday, Sunday, Monday and Tuesday with 10 games scheduled to take place, but results for those games were not available at Summer Time’s deadline.

This week’s action includes �ive games on Thursday and three on Sunday. Thursday’s schedule has Southeast versus Redvers; Windthorst versus Oxbow, Kipling versus Carlyle; Carnduff versus Arcola and Kenosee against Estevan. All games begin at 6:30 p.m. except in Estevan, where the �irst pitch occurs at 7 p.m.

At noon on Sunday, the Windthorst Pirates visit the Southeast Fireballs and the Kipling Royals play the Tower Wolves. At 3 p.m., the visiting teams �lip �ields – Windthorst versus the Tower Wolves and Kipling versus Southeast – to complete the pair of double-headers.

Moose Mountain considered a jewel on the Prairie

By Chris L. Istace Standing out from the rolling grasslands of southeast Saskatchewan is a hilly formation reminiscent of the Rocky Mountain foothills of Alberta. Here, in the depths of the poplar, aspen, green ash, Manitoba Maple and birch forest surrounding thick, reedy ponds, bogs, and lakes, the Province of Saskatchewan established one of its �irst public parks.

Moose Mountain Provincial Park is located about 23 kilometers north of Carlyle, Sask. along Highway 9. It lays less than an hour south of the Trans Canada Highway in Whitewood, Sask.

The park contains a wide array of amenities surrounding its two main water bodies; Kenosee Lake and Little Kenosee Lake. Kenosee Lake – the larger of the two – has a large, sandy beach and swimming area with a wide green-space for summer games, picnicking and barbecuing. Tennis courts, a basketball court, mini-golf and baseball diamonds are also located near the beach. A concession and convenience store sits adjacent to the beach parking lot, while local artists can work in and display their art at The Artist Colony in stone cabins adjacent to the Visitor Centre.

Motor boats are allowed on Kenosee Lake, which his known for its �ishing, skiing and other activities.

Little Kenosee Lake is open for canoes, kayaks and other non-motorized watercraft.

In the forest, visitors will �ind an extensive trail system open to hiking, mountain biking, and ATVing in the summer alongside cross-country skiing, snowshoeing and snowmobiling in the winter. Some trails have interpretive signage outlining the natural habitat of the region. Guided walks along the trails are available through July and August.

Meanwhile, nightly, seasonal and group camping space is available about one kilometer west of the beach area between Little Kenosee and Kenosee Lakes. These facilities include modern washrooms, 321 electric sites, 27 non-electric sites, 28 full hookup sites, and a sewage disposal facility. Arrangements can be made for equestrian camping as well.

The park also hosts resort and cabin accommodations for those wanting a more luxurious stay.

Outside of camping privately, Moose Mountain has three institutional camps, including the Kenosee Boys and Girls Camp, the Kenosee Bible Camp and the Clearview Christian Camp.

Other activities available to visitors are horse-back riding, waterslides, bird and wildlife viewing, cycling, sailing and geocaching.

The Moose Mountain Provincial Park’s Visitor Centre is the �irst stop to make for anyone wanting organized activities. This year, the park interpreters and staff are offering a new night caching tour using �lashlights and re�lectors within the beach area’s green space. This will run alongside daily programming for youth and adults.

On July 14, the park will host a presentation from Jason and Jeff Matity of Matity’s GetFishing. com in conjunction with Saskatchewan’s Free Fishing Weekend. Here, visitors will get the hottest tips and tricks for successful angling.

a “bio-blitz” which will host presentations from experts on plants, birds and animals found within the park. Participants are urged to download the “iNaturalist” app on their mobile phone devices to take pictures of plants and animals in the area. This information will help survey the region’s wide range of wildlife.

Also on the calendar is a visit from the Saskatchewan Express Musical Theatre troupe on July 21; a safety day presentation from Lifesaving Society Saskatchewan on July 28; an adventure sport day on Aug. 11; and a ghost tour in the Kenosee Lake Chalet.

Take the challenge at Golf Kenosee

An “ace” for Ferguson

By Chris L. Istace Tucked inside one of the oldest provincial parks in Saskatchewan is an 18-hole golf course many claim is one of the most naturally pristine facilities on the Prairies.

Golf Kenosee is a par-72, 6327-yard track laid among the natural inclines, declines and marshland of Southeast Saskatchewan’s Moose Mountains.

Located in Moose Mountain Provincial Park, it is a convenient venue for golfers of all levels travelling through the area for a day-visit or an overnight stay at the park’s fully serviced camping facilities.

Teeing off on the �irst hole, one observes the natural beauty of the western vista with its hilly landscape running as far as the eye can see.

A 350-yard, par four kicks off an 18-hole tour of the area’s ash, �ir, poplar and white birch forest and fresh-water marshland.

The setting provides golfers with an opportunity to get very close to the area’s natural wilderness.

The course has been set up with four tee-off areas; championship (6327 yards), back (6025

yards), middle (5339 yards) and forward (4912 yards). Water comes into play on holes four, six, seven, 11, 12 and 15, while sand traps provide a hazard to players on almost every fairway.

“The greens came through the winter pretty good,” said Golf Kenosee pro shop manager Brent Lothian. “There are a couple that needed a little bit of work, but (course superintendent) Calvin van Winkoop is a magician at getting them back in shape.”

Since the completion of an immense renovation to the course’s layout in 2007 – which saw the addition of bunkers and ponds alongside improvements to every tee box, fairway and green – the course has grown to intensely lush conditions.

The changes also added further challenge to the back nine set with the installation of two par�ive holes.

The front nine runs 3180 yards with �ive par-four holes, two par�ives and two par-threes.

Flipping to the back-nine, golfers open with a 510yard, par �ive Number 10, then move on to play

another par-�ive on 12, �ive par-four holes and two par-threes, the latter of which includes the round-closing Hole 18 at 168 yards. Holes 10 through 18 reach a length of 3147 yards.

Eleven years after the improvements, the course’s condition has become the ideal setting for major provincial tournaments in recent years, such as the Saskatchewan Ladies Open, the Mid-Amateur Men’s Championship and the Saskatchewan Mixed Championship.

Golf Kenosee also has practice and warm up facilities with a driving range and a puttingpractice green.

After the round, players can relax, trade stories or claim bragging rights in Golf Kenosee’s Club 19, a licensed restaurant with a full menu including daily lunch and nightly specials. Brunch is hosted in the restaurant from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. every Sunday.

Step back into history at Cannington Manor

By Chris L. Istace Visiting Cannington Manor Provincial Park is like being transported to the late-19th Century.

The park includes both guided and selfguided tours of a home and outbuildings rebuilt to closely represent what the village of Cannington Manor may have looked like before it was abandoned in 1900, �ive years before Saskatchewan became a province.

Even the facility’s staff wears vintage fashions to give visitors an authentic adventure into the setting and lifestyles experienced by aristocratic English setters when eastern-Canadian residents attempted to inhabit what was then the southeast corner of the District of Assiniboia.

Established in 1882, Cannington Manor was created at a time when the Government of Canada was motivating people to occupy the Prairies in the hopes of developing an agricultural economy. Over the next 18 years, residents of the village participated in English cultural activities such as fox hunts, dramatic societies, poetry clubs, tennis, cricket and croquet.

About a decade later, the village was home to more than 200 residents, including homesteaders, tradesmen, upperclass families and young

bachelors. Commercial enterprises in the community included carpentry, blacksmithing, a general store, a hotel, a dairy, two cheese factories, a combined school and town hall building, a pork packing plant, a land-titles of�ice and a �lour mill.

Cannington Manor’s isolated location – particularly its placement away from the development of the Canadian Paci�ic Railroad more than 10 kilometers to the south – alongside a drop in the grain markets led to the community’s demise.

When it was established as a tourism attraction, the rebuilt home was designed and decorated with the help of a granddaughter of an original village resident. All �ive of the buildings and the All Saints Anglican Church contain the era’s original furniture, household items, tools and other attractions. An interpretive centre outlines the history of Cannington Manor as envisioned by founder Captain Edward Michell Pierce.

Other attractions allow visitors to try various activities from that time, including croquet, tennis, horseshoes, cooking and rope making.

Today, the park is accessible by grid road west and north of Highway 603. Located 29 kilometers northeast of

Carlyle and 26 kilometers southeast of the Moose Mountain Provincial Park, Cannington Manor is open May Long weekend until Labour Day in early September. From May 22 to June 28, it is staffed from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m, Monday to Friday primarily for elementary and secondary student or pre-booked tours.

The park’s regular summer season, which is more conducive to the area’s tourism market, takes place from July 5 to September 2. During that period, it is open during the day from Thursday through Monday. The facility includes the reconstructed buildings, a visitor centre, a picnic area and washrooms.

Most of the shops and dwellings are accessible by wheelchair.

The highlight event of the summer is scheduled to occur Sunday, Aug. 5, when The Cannington Manor Fair Day takes place. This attraction will include 19th Century food, activities and an expanded staff garbed in the clothing of the time.

Three tips for preventing heatstroke this summer Did you know that the feeling of thirst subsides with age? It’s true!

As we get older, we feel less thirsty. That’s why the elderly are at greater risk of developing ailments such as dehydration and heatstroke.

Here are three tips to help prevent discomfort this summer.

1. Drink lots of water Heatstroke happens when you neglect to keep yourself hydrated in a hot environment.

Therefore, it’s essential to drink regularly and eat lots fruits and veggies with a high water content (e.g. citrus fruit,

melons and cucumbers).

Tip: always bring a reusable water bottle wherever you go.

2. Stay cool Turn your fans on and program your air conditioning system to maintain a comfortable room temperature. Keep your blinds and curtains closed during the day to prevent the sun’s rays from heating up your home. When need be, �ind shelter in an air-conditioned area such as a grocery store, restaurant, shopping mall or pharmacy to keep your body temperature in check.

3. Exercise in the

morning or evening When summer rolls around, plan your workout schedule according to the outside temperature.

Ask for help!

Heatstroke should be treated as a medical emergency. If you or a loved one is experiencing dizziness, nausea, vomiting, headaches or any other worrying symptoms (e.g. rapid heart rate, irritated skin, confusion), call 911.

Beef and mushroom rolls with red wine sauce

Feel like making a meal that’ll impress your guests? Try these exquisite beef rolls drizzled with a delectable red wine sauce.

Ingredients (Makes 4 servings) For the sauce: • 2 cups red wine • 1/2 cup demi-glace sauce • 2 shallots, �inely chopped • 1 tbsp. fresh thyme • 2 bay leaves • 4 tbsp. cold unsalted butter • Salt and pepper, to taste For the rolls: • 450 g (1 lb.) mushrooms • 1 large onion • 3 shallots • 2 tbsps. butter • 2 tsps. chopped fresh Italian parsley • Salt and pepper • 4 mild or spicy Italian sausages • 4 slices sandwich steak • 8 slices bacon • Fresh parsley Directions 1. Finely chop the mushrooms, onion and shallots.

2. Melt butter in a skillet placed on the BBQ grill.

Sauté onions and shallots until translucent. Add mushrooms and cook over low heat for around 5 minutes, stirring often.

3. In the same skillet, sauté sausages until golden brown on all sides. Set aside.

4. Spread one-quarter of the mushroom mix over a slice of sandwich steak. Roll around a sausage, then roll two slices of bacon over the steak.

Secure with butcher’s twine or toothpicks.

Repeat for the three remaining servings.

5. In the same skillet, brown the rolls on all sides and then cook, covered, for about 10 minutes. Set aside.

6. In the same skillet, sauté the shallots for the sauce. Deglaze with the

red wine, scraping the bottom of the pan with a wooden spoon.

7. Add the demi-glace sauce, thyme and bay leaves. Bring to a boil.

Reduce heat and let simmer until the liquid has reduced by half.

8. Filter the mixture using a �ine strainer and discard any remaining solids, keeping only the liquid portion.

9. Pour liquid into a small preheated saucepan and gently add the cold butter. Stir constantly until the sauce is smooth. Season with salt and pepper to taste.

10. Cut each roll into three slices. Arrange slices on the plate. Drizzle with sauce and garnish with parsley.

Pickleball: the perfect sport for people aged 50+ A playing �ield similar to that of badminton; a net and moves reminiscent of ping pong; a sturdy racquet like the ones used for ping pong, but bigger; and a lightweight plastic ball — pickleball has every feature necessary to allow people aged 50 years and older to stay active without straining their muscles and joints.
