Greetings from Terra Ceia. I hope this letter finds you safe, in good health and ready to get in the garden. As I write this, winter is taking its last stab at us. Fortunately, We have had good planting weather prior to this and our spring crops are all in the ground already. We now look for ward to our first cut flowers in the beginning of April. It has been a mild winter again and it seems that Spring is now regularly appearing two weeks earlier than normal here. We actually had daffodils, tulips and peonies (albeit a very early hybrid) blooming here at the same time this year.
The family is growing. We were surprised during the holidays last year when our eldest son and his wife announced that my wife and I were going to become grandparents! My wife and our daughters were so excited that they immediately began shopping for baby clothes. Me - I am still trying to figure out how time has passed so quickly. It seems like it was just the other day when he was still a baby.
My mother is 83 and still rocking it. This is better (I think) than being in a rocking chair. The picture is from last May where she is arranging flowers for a wedding with the help of Brenda. She grew up on a dairy farm in Minnesota so sitting still just doesn't seem to be in her DNA.

Because Amaryllis thrive at an air temperature of 68 to 70 degrees with a soil temperature of 75 degrees, bottom heat is essential to getting your bulbs off to an early start. To provide these conditions without the expense of a high-tech glasshouse, simply place your pots on a standard heating pad. Heating pads enable you to leave the thermostat at a comfortable temperature while providing sufficient heat in the root zone. It should be noted that Amaryllis will grow fine in the absence of bottom heat, only not as fast.
