Since 1928, Courage Kenny Rehabilitation Institute has been an advocate for people with disabilities. Over the years, we have helped fill gaps in services for people with conditions like spinal cord injuries, brain injuries, and those born with disabilities such as cerebral palsy or spina bifida. In 1976, we opened our Transitional Rehabilitation Program, a national model for innovative, short-term intensive rehabilitation that takes place between hospitalization and returning to the community, avoiding unnecessary nursing home placements.

Today, we continue our legacy of national leadership, offering innovative solutions like our fully accessible fitness centers and recreational programs which help keep people with disabilities active, healthy and independent.

Introducing Leah Leah’s journey with Courage Kenny Rehabilitation Institute began when she was just six months old and her parents started taking her to swimming lessons. Since then, the Sports and Recreation programs at Courage Kenny have filled her life with new activities and new friends.

Leah’s parents view Courage Kenny and its services as an equalizer for Leah, allowing her to try activities they didn’t know existed for a child with spina bifida. Leah is now 13 years old, and has been able to participate in multiple activities such as power soccer, alpine skiing, water skiing and track and field.

Introducing Rachel Rachel’s life took a drastic turn in December of 2022 when she suffered three gunshot wounds while living in Chicago.

After undergoing two emergency surgeries at Northwestern Memorial, she spent time recovering at the Shirley Ryan Ability Lab before being discharged later that month.

One year later, Rachel received a call about joining the ABLE program and moved back home to start her rehabilitation journey.

Committed to her recovery, she attends ABLE three times a week, dedicating four hours each session to various interventions, which has led to remarkable improvements.
