Kata (The Tai Chi of Karate) NEW

This is a movement class open to all abilities ages, 18–80+ years. We will practice set sequences of moves that flow almost like a dance. They are called ‘Kata’, originating from traditional Japanese martial arts, which are a cornerstone of basic martial arts training. This is a NONcontact class and aims to aid attention, focus, balance and mobility. Please wear clothes that are comfortable to exercise in. *No Class July 12

This supportive and informative session with Dr. Joel Heiser will explore the conditions that often lead to joint replacement, when surgery might be the right option, and what to expect before, during, and after the procedure. Our expert will guide seniors and their families through the different care options and empower you to make informed decisions. The Art of Letting Go

Starting the journey into senior living opens the door to new possibilities, but figuring out the first steps can be the most challenging part. This event is designed to help you navigate the next chapter of life with purpose and fulfillment. Our speaker Bob Heck will share valuable insights on embracing change, finding new passions, and making the most of this exciting phase.

Digital Photo & Tech

3rd & 4th Wednesdays, 2 – 3:15 p.m., Free with Registration

This class takes place at the Carlsbad Senior Center and over Zoom. Pre-registration is required for Zoom access. The last 15 minutes will be devoted to your questions.

Editing Your iPhone Photos (July 16)

The built-in Photos App has photo editing capabilities that will amaze you. In this class, our instructor, Mike McMahon, will focus on easy one-touch photo edits and will also explain some of the more extensive editing features that rival the edits done by sophisticated software like Photoshop. Ranging from simple cropping to sophisticated adjustments of exposure, contrast, and saturation, you’ll be amazed at how you can dramatically improve your photos. You can even add text and speech bubbles to your photos.

All About Podcasts (July 23)

Would you enjoy hearing your favorite radio programs on your schedule instead of having to remember the program’s broadcast date/time? Many radio programs (e.g. NPR’s This American Life) are available as free downloadable audio files, just like an audio book. Copy them to your portable device (e.g. smartphone, iPod) and listen at your convenience. Our instructor, Mike McMahon, is a big fan of podcasts and will give you a practical guide to what it’s all about.

Community Garden Club

Work with Master Gardener Jano Nightingale to plant and care for the Senior Center raised bed vegetable garden at the Pine Avenue Community Garden. Plant selection, pruning, fertilization, and organic insect and disease control will be covered. Please bring your own tools.

Mindfulness & Meditation with Michelle Thursdays, July 3 – 17, 9 – 10:15 a.m., $10

Create a brave and welcoming community to explore the nature of mindfulness learning to be awake and alive in this present moment, deepening our skills and wisdom to meet life’s challenges, and expanding our capacity for joy by waking from the trance. Previous meditation experience is helpful but not required.

Carlsbad Cruisers Walking Club

Tuesdays and Thursdays, 9 – 10:15 a.m., Free with Registration

Move towards health and wellness while having fun and making new friends. Wear comfortable shoes, a hat, and sunscreen. Dogs, strollers, family, and friends are all welcome! Meet-up locations will be sent via email. Tuesdays: Meet on the Western steps of the Carlsbad Senior Center for a stroll around Carlsbad Village. Thursdays: Meet us at Batiquitos Lagoon this July.

Billiards Room

The Senior Center’s billiards room is open to adults age 50+ and features two pool tables for casual play. Pool ball sets can be checked out at the front desk with a valid ID. Coming soon: a new billiards room membership will allow registered participants to check out a key for access throughout their visit. Membership cards will be used in place of an ID when checking out equipment.

Coming soon, the Senior Center computer lab will transition to the same Print Release System used in Carlsbad libraries. To print, you'll need your Carlsbad Library card number to log in. Printing will still be free, with a 50-page monthly limit automatically applied to your library account. Need help? Stop by the front desk for assistance!

Congregate Lunch Service

• Join us for a nutritious lunch on weekdays at the Carlsbad Senior Center First-time attendees must fill out a San Diego County Intake form.

60+ years: $3.50 suggested voluntary contribution *

Guests 50–59 years: $5 fee

Guests under 50 years: $5 fee and must be accompanied by a senior

• The dining room is open from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., and meals are served from 12 to 12:45 p.m.

• No outside food is permitted in the dining room, per San Diego County Health Code.

Transportation Service

• Need a ride to lunch? Transportation is available on weekdays for Carlsbad residents 60+ who cannot drive. Advanced registration and approval are required. Participants must be fully independent and ambulatory. The suggested voluntary contribution for this service is $4 per roundtrip *

• To register or with questions about eligibility, please call the Carlsbad Senior Center Nutrition team at 442–339–2651.

Home Meal Delivery Service

• Homebound Carlsbad residents 60+ may qualify for home-delivered meals! Senior Center staff can help you complete the required intake form and will conduct a home visit to determine eligibility. The suggested voluntary contribution for this service is $5 per meal *

• To register or with questions about eligibility, please call the Carlsbad Senior Center Nutrition team at 442–339–2651.

• For questions about the menu, delivery changes, or volunteer driver opportunities, please call Meals on Wheels North County at 760–736–9900.
