Intergenerational Ping Pong Tournament

Tuesdays or Wednesdays, starting Feb. 4, 11 a.m.–1 p.m., $10 per class, PACC Become the master of your taste buds while learning the health benefits of creative meals and fresh grown food! Thursday, Feb. 13, 3–4:30 p.m., #111 On Thursday, the Intergenerational Ping Pong Tournament will be taking over the Senior Center. Ten teams will compete in this round robin tournamentstyle competition. Teams will be randomly assigned the day of the tournament. Winner gets a certificate and their name added to the plaque hanging in the Senior Center. This is a free event but don’t wait too long to register, space is limited! Do you have what it takes to partner up with one of our L.I.T.E. students and take home the championship title?

Grandfriends Kindness Project: “Peace of My Heart” Thursday, Feb. 6, 3–4:30 p.m., DN It's the month of LOVE! Come join Kids for Peace for their next event, Peace of My Heart. Younger and older adults will come together to write loving notes, go outside with sidewalk chalk to write happy messages and even engage in a little dancing!

We hope you can join us for this fun and interactive intergenerational event! Participation is free, thanks to a grant from the Carlsbad Charitable Foundation.

Love Your Heart Screenings Friday, Feb. 14, 8 a.m.– 5 p.m., Lobby Love Your Heart is an annual event in which organizations from across the U.S. and Mexico join together to provide FREE blood pressure screenings to the public on Valentine's Day. Last year, over 43,000 people got to know their blood pressure numbers and took charge of their own heart health!

This presentation will guide you through the process of developing a transportation plan to develop and strengthen your ability to drive confidently and safely. The focus of this talk is to identify strategies to improve and enhance your driving abilities while also identifying resources to support your transportation plan. Aging Expert, gerontologist and senior transportation author, Judi Bonilla is known for developing programs to empower older adults and enhance their quality of life.

UCSD Osher Lifelong Learning: Architecture of the Silk Road Wednesdays, 10–11:45 a.m., AUD This six-part series is led by Diane Kane, an architectural historian and retired Senior Planner for the City of San Diego.

Feb. 5: Southeast Asia Diane will discuss the influence that Angkor Wat; “Spice Islands”; the silk Industry, spices, and foreign trade had on the silk road and its history.

Let’s Explore Zentangle® Wednesdays, Feb. 5, 12 & 26, 10–11:30 a.m., $63 resident/$70 non-resident, #116. Zentangle® is an easy to learn, relaxing and fun way to create beautiful images. Mindful drawing helps quiet the mind and relax the body. This is the Zen part of Zentangle®. Students will learn more about the process while learning tangles, designing tiles and doing Zentangle® Inspired Art (ZIA). No art background required. Materials are included.

Feb. 12: India Diane will discuss the influence that Hindu, Muslim, and Christian architecture had on the silk road.

Feb. 19: Persia and the “Stans” Diane will discuss the influence that Crossroads of trade and intellectual thought had on the silk road.

Architecture from Persepolis to Samarkand will be looked at and analyzed. The impact of raiders, horsemanship and yurts is covered, as well.

Feb. 26: North Africa and Asia Minor Diane will discuss the influence of mud, domes, and mosaics as well as churches and mosques. The comparison between nomads and seafarers vs. city dwellers will be discussed, too.

Tony Cortina Returns!

Thursday, Feb. 20, 12:30–2 p.m., AUD Tony Cortina was a former railroad worker in Chicago but found his true love of performing! He has been playing acoustic guitar and singing for 29 years, performing in restaurants, bars, senior communities, weddings and private parties for 11 years, four of those years, full time.

Carlsbad Newcomers host Natalie Shapiro, Executive Director, Buena Vista Audubon Society Wednesday, Feb. 5, 9:45–11:30 a.m., #111 Natalie will discuss the activities BVAS provides the community, such as birding walks and trips, and reveal the great local birding hot spots. She will also talk about their popular monthly speaker program, conservation land, events for kids, and their beautiful nature center and trail located on Coast Highway along the Buena Vista Lagoon.

Movie: The Best of Enemies Thursday, Feb. 13, 1–3 p.m., AUD A timely drama that centers on an unlikely relationship between Ann Atwater, an outspoken civil rights activist, and C.P. Ellis, a local Ku Klux Klan leader who reluctantly cochaired a community summit, battling over the desegregation of schools in Durham, North Carolina during the racially-charged summer of 1971. The incredible events that unfolded would change Durham and the lives of Atwater and Ellis forever. (Netflix summary) Cast: Sam Rockwell, Taraji P. Henson, Anne Heche. Free.

Apple Watch – Intro NEW! Wednesday, Feb. 19, 10–11:15 a.m., #111 Apple has been very successful with the Apple Watch. Many consider it to be the best of the smartwatches. Our instructor, Mike McMahon, will explain the basics of this very innovative product. We’ll discuss how the watch works in conjunction with the iPhone and how it can be used independent of the iPhone for certain features.

Amazon Alexa Products - Intro Wednesday, Feb. 19, 1–2:15 p.m., #111 Amazon has made a big splash with its voicecontrolled devices…the Echo, the Dot, and more.

Our instructor, Mike McMahon, will explain what this new revolution of voice-controlled devices is all about. New owners of Alexa products (and those considering the purchase of one) will find this class very helpful.

Photoshop Elements – Part 1 Wednesday, Feb. 26, 10–11:15 a.m., #111 Photoshop Elements has powerful tools for organizing your photos. Our instructor, Mike McMahon, will demonstrate the use of star ratings, albums, slideshows, and more. Mike will use the 2019 version of the software during the demonstration, but the lessons learned will apply to most versions.

Back-up Essentials NEW! Wednesday, Feb. 26, 1–2:15 p.m., #111 The single most important thing you can do to protect the valuable data on your computer and on your smartphone is to properly back them up.

Hardware failures, virus attacks, and user error put you at risk for losing your family photos, financial data and more. A reliable backup is the key to getting back in operation after a mishap. It is also critical for successfully moving to a new computer or new smartphone. Reviewing your backup strategy should be high on your list of 2020 resolutions.

Carlsbad Paradise Café by the Sea 760-602-4655 The Carlsbad Senior Center serves nutritious, hot meals Monday through Friday in our Dining Room. The requested donation for seniors who are ages 60 and up is $3.50 — you need not be a city of Carlsbad resident to dine. A $5 lunch fee applies to nonsenior guests of seniors.

Reservations can be made in person, by calling 760-602-4655. Please tell us which day(s) you will be attending lunch and leave your full name and phone number. Cancellations can be made by calling 760-602-4655.

Dining room seating is available at 11 a.m. and lunch is served promptly at noon. You may forfeit your lunch reservation if you do not check-in prior to 11:45 a.m. We also deliver home meals Monday through Friday to homebound seniors living in Carlsbad, for a requested donation of $4. In addition, frozen meals are available for the weekend and will be delivered on Fridays. For more information, call 760-602-4650.

Transportation for lunch to and from the Carlsbad Senior Center is available Monday through Friday to Carlsbad seniors, ages 60 and up, and who are unable to drive. Transportation for medical appointments is provided Monday through Thursday.

Wednesdays, transportation is available for shopping. Call 760-602-4650 for schedule and reservations. Special transportation options are available every Tuesday for lunch & bingo, as well as the 2nd Thursday of each month for lunch and our free monthly movie.
