DEVOTED TO THE FUTURE OF YOU

MESSAGE from the VICE PRESIDENT OF ADVANCEMENT & ALUMNI ENGAGEMENT

Dear Carlow Alumni,

Let me begin my message by saying “THANK YOU”. Through giving your time, talent and treasure, the Carlow community is very appreciative of all that you do throughout the year to support the students, faculty and staff. We have been seeing many more of our alumni at various events and I have to say, we are absolutely thrilled to be back in person and spend time and fellowship with all of you. I look forward to having even more of these moments where we can gather together and enjoy each other’s company.

I offer my sincere congratulations to the classes of 1963 and 1973 for recently celebrating their 60th and 50th reunions with us on campus. It was a joy and pleasure to honor you all. And, to the class of 2023, welcome to the Carlow alumni community. The achievements and milestones you reach as alumni, whether in your personal or professional lives, reflect the mission and values of Carlow.

As we continue to get out on the road more, we hope you will join us in connecting with your fellow alumni. Your support will always have a lasting impact on the University. I invite you to continue to share your story, champion an alumni chapter/group in your area, mentor a student, contribute to Carlow Scholarships or endowment, or simply reach out to tell us how you are doing. We always welcome (and need) your involvement and feedback! We want to engage as many alumni as we can. Thank you all for being a part of the Carlow alumni community and I look forward to seeing you at a Carlow gathering.

With Thanks,

UNIVERSITY NEWS

FOR A JUST AND MERCIFUL WORLD

The Carlow Closet is now the Mercy Center for Care.

This new on campus service provides free non-perishable food items and gently used clothing to students in need. Statistically, one in three college students can use some help getting meals. Students can submit confidential online orders each week or shop in-person. The Mercy Center for Care is a mission-driven effort that embraces hospitality, welcomes the wholeness of each student, and celebrates the diversity of our community’s life experiences.

Commitment to Mercy Service

The University’s commitment to service began with Catherine McAuley, who founded the Sisters of Mercy in 1831. In 1843, Frances Warde and six other sisters traveled to Pittsburgh, where they founded the first American congregation of the Sisters of Mercy. Join students, faculty, alumni and staff members of Carlow University to keep the Mercy mission alive for our 2023 Mercy Service Day.

If you are interested bringing together a group of alumni to participate in our 2023 Mercy Day of Service, please send an email to alumni@carlow.edu.

Your Gift Makes an Impact

Every dollar counts towards improving our students’ experiences throughout the educational journey. The majority of students are first-generation college students. Your support helps them have access to an education, a degree, and a better future. By supporting student scholarships, the endowment, and student emergency funding you are truly making a difference in the lives of Carlow students.

THE POWER OF POETRY

CELEBRATING THE LEGACY OF THE INTERNATIONAL POETRY FORUM, AN EVENING OF POETRY AND MUSIC

January 7, 2023 was a night that brought attention and visibility to Pittsburgh’s creative arts and their power to elevate the human spirit. It was an unforgettable evening in Rosemary Heyl Theatre with acclaimed writers, Carlow MFA students and mentors, and the Pittsburgh cultural community as we honored the legacy of the International Poetry Forum and its founder, Samuel Hazo.

The night began with a reel of archival photography of the bygone days of the acclaimed International Poetry Forum. Artists like Archibald MacLeish, W.H. Auden, Anne Sexton, Yevgeny Yevtushenko, Linda Pastan, and Joyce Carol Oates, to name a few, were all famously featured during the forum’s heyday. But the event was rekindled with a new set of featured artists: Richard Blanco, Tracey K. Smith, and Naomi Shihab Nye, a veteran IPF attendee.

CATCHING UP with the CELTIC COMMUNITY

CHARDAE JONES ’11

Why did you choose Carlow University?

I chose Carlow after attending an overnight as a preteen. My cousin invited me to stay and make tie-died shirts with her roommate back when it was Carlow College. I remember taking a photo in my little pink nightgown and was blown away by college. I told her I was going to go to Carlow. When it came time to pick colleges in high school, Carlow was at the top of the list. The way Carlow made me feel as a kid left a lasting impression.

What is your favorite Carlow memory?

My neighbor (I called her my roommate because she was always in my room) barged in and asked me to run for student government as her vice president and I immediately said no. I told her that it sounded boring and I was a writer. She asked again and was pretty

convincing. We ran on a platform of diversity. We met awesome people on campus. We debated. It was great. We lost but ended up as a senator for the humanities department. Who knew that all that student government knowledge and intro to Robert’s Rules would come in handy in municipal government.

What advice do you have for current students enrolled at Carlow?

Breathe. Enjoy this moment because you will never have it all figured out. You won’t have half of it figured out and the sooner you accept that the less chaotic life gets. Also, network. I learned that it truly isn’t what you know but who you know. Don’t be afraid to say yes and step out of your comfort zone as unique opportunities live outside of your comfort zone.

Chardae attended our campus networking event “Advice & a Slice” this past February. She connected with our 2023 Carlow Laureates as well as other Carlow alumni. This reconnection enticed Chardae to apply to our Carlow University Alumni Council and we couldn’t be more pleased to have made this connection. Thank you for joining us, Chardae! We are proud of the work you’ve accomplished in our region.

What is your favorite Carlow memory?

There are many memories. I remember when I was pursuing my undergraduate degree and could not decide whether to go pre-med or business and one of the Sisters (wish I could remember her name) took me on a tour to the science lab. Just the fact that she went out of her way to inspire me, left a major impression on me.

Did a Carlow professor inspire you?

There are 2 professors that inspired me. My undergraduate professor who taught, “Minorities and the Law” inspired me to consider becoming a lawyer because of his passion for diversity. Also, one of my graduate professors brought us together as a cohort (I think it was for “Transformational Management”) and taught us to be more open-minded and not to think “always” about anything.

What advice do you have for current students enrolled at Carlow?

Enjoy the journey of personal growth and development as you discover your passion.

What do you enjoy about your current position/profession?

My Master’s Degree in Professional Leadership with a concentration in Training & Development from Carlow University has been very instrumental in my current career as the CEO of Roundtree Training & Consulting where I provide professional development programs as a Leadership Trainer, Coach, and Speaker.

What unexpected experience or event has shaped and/ or influenced your current professional life?

The pandemic was a wake-up call for me to leave my full-time position after six-

MARJORIE “JORIE” MURPHY ’73

Did a Carlow professor inspire you?  If so who and how was that personal inspirational?

It’s difficult to choose just one, I was so fortunate to have outstanding professors! Sr Theresa Coyne (English), Sr. Mercy McGrady (Organic & inorganic chemistry) Dr. Urrichio (Microbiology) Dr. Winter (Psychology), Sr Patrick (Academic Dean), just to mention a few, but all were positive influences, extremely supportive, not to mention patient!

Has something about our Carlow education surprised you since graduating?

When I entered Carlow, the majors and minors were geared to nursing, speech

years as an Academic Program Director of Business Administration and Business Professor at South University to fulfill my dream to become a full-time entrepreneur of Roundtree Training & Consulting.

What is the professional highlight of your career thus far?

In addition to becoming the CEO of Roundtree Training & Consulting where I support individuals, groups, corporate America and other for-profit and nonprofit organizations with helping them to accomplish their organizational goals, but, I also recently launched my second new book, “Leading from Within: A FaithBased Perspective on Leadership’’.

What do you enjoy doing in your free time?

Spending time with family, going to the beach, doing yoga, and reading.

pathology, education, which were all great but limited to the sign of the times.

Now the university has expanded to undergraduate and graduate degrees in so many professions to meet the needs of students in 2023!

What advice do you have for current students enrolled at Carlow?

Choose a profession that you love!  Persevere and shoot for the stars. Opportunities are limitless!

What do you enjoy about your current position/profession?

I retired fourteen years ago, but so enjoyed my 34 years teaching and becoming an administrator in the Pittsburgh Public

Schools.  I now supervise Duquesne University student teachers in their field placements and thoroughly enjoy the opportunities to visit schools, meet the mentor teachers and student teachers assigned in their field placements.  I continue to learn from my experiences interacting with them!

Jorie spoke at our 2023 Reunion dinner as a representative for the class of 1973. Are you interested in becoming a class representative to prepare for our next reunion? If so, please email alumni@carlow.edu

Reunion 2023

Reunion Weekend 2023 was a weekend to remember. The weekend kicked off at PNC Park during a warm spring night. We heard old college stories, swooned over class rings, and shared in a special moment as Carlow’s President, Dr. Kathy Humphrey threw out the first pitch. Saturday, the celebration continued as we honored our alumni from years 1963, 1973, 1983, 1993, 2003, 2013, 2018 and 2022 during the on campus Interfaith Blessing and Breakfast and Campus Tours with Carlow faculty. We concluded the afternoon by warming our hands and hearts during a special Carlow Irish Tea Time as we sipped our very own branded Tea. We rounded out the weekend by celebrating our alumni over a beautiful dinner hosted by Dr. Humphrey at the Duquesne Club.
