Cartagena Bolívar Colombia Pontifical Xaveriana University and P.E.I. Public Competition: 2nd share place Task: Team leader for the architectural proposal.

The project started as a joint proposal developed between the design studio New Territories and the International Studies Program at Xaverian University (or P.E.I. in Spanish), participating at a professional level, in a nationwide contest on social housing. The concept of a “green machine” begins with the understanding of the house as a minimum structure of a large-scale complex dwelling system. In essence it’s based on the harmonic relationship between the landscape and urban development. As a result of research and the disadvantages of conventional construction systems in the area, the project used a construction material similar to bamboo called “Guadua Agustifolia” which is widely used in other regions, and is also involved in promoting local economic development.

Overall. Due to the disappearance of the mangroves as a result of urbanization and other human activities, the damage in the water cycle in the city lead to floods in various populated areas near the coast of the swamp “La Virgen”. As a possible reply to this recurrent problematic, cultivating “guadua agustifolia” and using it as a natural barrier, helps the restoration of mangroves and the raw material becomes the source for the future urban construction. This creates a system in which the urbanization ends up being a contributor to sustainable development in the area.

In relation to the individual houses, the team developed a series of strategies: 1) Elevating the units from the ground approximately 1.2m reduces the impact on the soil and at the same time the dwelling becomes a gesture of the vernacular architecture of the region. 2) The houses come with the basic program, and are built in such a way they can be further developed inward and turned into additional living spaces without modifying the outside structure, to suit each individual requirement.

3) The units create a variety of community spaces such as access terraces, stairs and gardens that explore different kinds of private-public relationships between the whole neighborhood.

Bogota Pontifical Xavierian University Urban Centers Urban Planning / 8.304.815 m2 aprox.

Task: Research, development of plans, diagrams and models.

In 2016 the class of Urban Centers design decided to focus on the issue of “limits and borders” inspired by the work Mutations by Harvard Project on the City and O.M.A. (2001). The task involved investigating different kinds of borders of the city of Bogotá, and identifying different phenomena until a concept was developed. Based on this first approach and on a lecture by Paola Vigano (Grand Prix de l’Urbanism et de l’Art Urbain France 2013) a “What if?” a prospective scenario was developed, in which by understanding the territory, inferences could be made on how these places would transform in the near and distant future.

In the case of the west frontier border located on the 13th street. Firstly, based on how the city developed due to its importance as a commercial route, the 13th street acts as an “anchor line” for different activities, promoting the conurbation of the city on its axis. Secondly, On the intersection of the 13th street with the Bogotá river, the lack of a reserve zone, deteriorates the main environmental system of the region by damaging its hydric resources. Thirdly, due to the varied local zoning in between comercial, industrial and informal living spaces, there has been a lack of basic public infrastructure developed not meeting the basic needs of the area.

“What if…” by implementing a free trade zone, an ecological ring could be established around the 13th street and Bogota river intersection, which would allow the regeneration and future protection of the natural resources and increase property value in the area?

The project is a compilation of the research done around the issue of the border between the 13th street and Bogota river, and how the potential development of the area into a free trade zone would look like in a possible future.
