Each artist/designer pays a nominal rent for a display space.

That rent pays for staff, marketing and upkeep while the artists retain 100% of their profits. It works for all of us.

ome of Scotland’s most talented and original photographers choose to sell their work through the SDX. Our clients include the hugely talented Kersten Howard, whose stunning landscapes are developed and styled at her home studio on the banks of Loch Lomond and Glasgow-based Stuart Brown, who captures iconic cityscapes from a new perspective, including classic buildings, much loved venues and a few hidden gems.

As well as being a photographer, Louise Blamire (pictured below) is also an artist, potter, seamstress, mother-of-three and a senior rugby internationalist.

reater Good Wood is a social enterprise that supports the local community and charities across Scotland. hen we close our eyes, we see houses filled with beautiful ceramic things. Small dishes that can hold no more than a pocketful of change; beautiful plates meant to be delicately leant against the

ne of our proudest achievements at SDX is that we have created a genuinely democratic space for original art, where artists of all ages and backgrounds are given the opportunity to display their work for sale. With us, buyers can view and purchase works by some of Scotland’s best established and up-andcoming artists in an informal environment, without the social and cost pressures often associated with buying from galleries.

We are delighted to display for sale a variety of original and ground breaking work by artists, including Erik Petrie, a Scottish painter with a smile as wide as the Firth of Forth and enough energy to power the lights

Homeware and Furniture

ur fabulous range of homeware includes everything from coasters and candles to wall and table clocks and hand-carved pizza serving boards. Sarah Cox’s

quirky, animal-inspired products include screen printed tea towels, cushion covers and other household items, with drawings of her beloved whippets.

Sarah describes her work, such as her Highland Cattle clock (pictured right) as ‘hu-

morous, silly, daft, fun, whimsical’. She says: ‘when people see my work, they tend to have an immediate reaction to it, one way or another!’

From Jay Frazer’s statement, marine-inspired ear-rings, in a turquoise blue textured glaze, reminiscent of the sea, to Edith Weber’s hammeredat-home, Sterling Silver open-link, leaf necklaces and earrings, there’s some-

thing to suit every taste and budget.

Lisa Crockard’s linear, oxidised silver and gold Keum Boo square drop ear-rings, are handmade with silver sheet that’s been reticulated to give them their unusual stone-like texture.

For something traditionally Scottish, BU Jewellery’s Wee Harris pendants and brooches are cast and hand finished in solid Sterling Silver, in Glasgow and then transported to Edinburgh to be hallmarked in the Assay Office before they come to you finished and beautifully packaged.

Glass design

S

COTLAND has an abundance of sand, kelp and coal, the three essentials for glass-making. The industry dates back to the 17th Century, when glass-making was a nomadic craft, pursued by individual artists working on their own in a small way. The tradition is being maintained by SDX through our talented group of glass designers.

There are few types of glass which have not been either imitated or improved in Scotland - and several that may truly be regarded as of native origin. The standard of achievement, as with most products of man’s hand and mind, has varied from the mundane and the prosaic to inspired heights of artistry. The work of our class designers can be extraordinarily fine, and there can be little doubt that the variety in quality and in type of glassware has a special appeal for collectors that has played a very substantial part in creating and sustaining the worldwide interest in Scottish glass today.

Catherine Lowe’s glass jewellery, inspired by her Hebridean heritage is both beautiful and intricately designed, reflecting the hand and eye of a master craftswoman. Ann Aitchison’s playful, fused glass creations (pictured) reflect her background working with stained glass.

I

t’s no secret that Scotland has a rich textiles history. From Paisley being the global hub of the huge paisley shawl industry in the 19th Century, to the Isle of Harris’s world renowned signature tweed; from the Highlands supplying the finest wool and cashmere to the international industry, and the Borders hosting the cream of the crop in dyeing and finishing factories. Instead of

heralding tartan as the only notable thing to come out of Scotland, we’re working to reinvigorate these lost and often forgotten crafts.

Accessory designers

H

ere in Scotland, we have a glorious fashion industry championing the finest indigenous natural materials, which made its stamp on the global scene years ago.

Scots are renowned for exhibiting complete mastery of craft, which is demonstrated in the quality of the wide range of fashion accessory products on sale at the SDX. While we will always celebrate the kilt, there’s much more to Scotland than just tartan. This creative and industrious land is home to some exceptional designers and we’re delighted to be able to attract so many of them.

With a wealth of design talent on show in our stores and in our online shop, there’s ample opportunity to pick up an inspired gift for your nearest and dearest, and yes, even that ridiculously fussy family member.

Makers, producers and designers abound, so there’s even more reason to shop with us, support-

Island Nation is a design studio, founded by Glasgow School of Art graduate, Kirsty Lamont. It creates unique, design-led accessories and fashion for the conscious buyer.

F

or much of her life, she learned at the feet of her late father, the renowned ceramic artist, Dave Cohen. Following his sad passing in 2018, aged 85, daughter Esther Cohen has now assumed the reins of his working studio and pottery showroom in North Berwick, where she’s carving an enviable reputation as a talented and successful artist in her own right.

After giving up her job as a lecturer Esther, who lives in Leith, is now a full-time, professional artist, taking commissions for her distinctive, Edinburgh skylines from buyers across the UK and internationally and her prints and ceramics are sold all over the world.

The turning point for her came when she began to show her work at SDX launch outlet at Ocean Terminal, Leith and later at its showroom at Buchanan Galleries in Glasgow.

Esther, 54, said: ‘I’d worked in further education for 10 years and had got to the stage where I felt I needed to do my own work.

‘One of my students suggested I go to SDX because she’d heard it was a great way to reach a wider audience.

‘I was sceptical at first because I didn’t think I had a good enough body of work that I was ready to put before the public. It was just before Christmas, when I went to speak to Lynzi and she said, “don’t overthink it, just get your work in

here”. I did and it’s the best decision I’ve ever made.

‘I’ve always believed it’s the quality of the image that sells. It doesn’t have to be a large, dramatic piece; if the quality is good enough then people will respond.’

Esther’s American-born father arrived in Scotland in 1958 after serving in the US Navy, aboard the destroyer USS Hale. A welder by trade, he enrolled at Edinburgh College of Art to study and later returned to the US for his post-diploma at Scripps College in California, with his Scottish wife, Frances.

Describing himself as ‘American by birth, Scottish by choice’ Dave and Frances returned to Scotland where he taught ceramics at his Edinburgh alma mater and, in 1975 the family moved to North Berwick where they established their home, art studios and gallery. In 1986 he became Head of Ceramics at the Glasgow School of Art, before his retirement in 1991.

Esther, who graduated from The Glasgow School of Art with a BA in Fine Art, before completing her Masters’ degree at Dundee’s Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art, said: ‘I learned everything I know from my father. He helped me tremendously. He worked in clay all his life.’

M

ost people can only dream of turning their hobby into a lucrative business, but Edinburgh College of Art graduate Cherith Harrison has given up her job with her sights set on becoming the new Shirley MacArthur.

In the past three years, Cherith has seen sales of her animal-inspired art rise dramatically, and she is now selling in the USA, Canada, Australia and Japan.

With her art printed on tote bags, notebooks, cards, mugs, aprons and tea towels she has created an inspiring range of gifts, using intricate illustrations of popular wildlife, which are among the top sellers at SDX retail outlets and in its online store.

Cherith’s passion for wildlife dates to when, as a seven-year-old, she rescued a wild baby rabbit.

‘As far back as I can remember, I wanted to draw. I’ve always loved creating and making things. It seems to me the most instinctive of all human pursuits and here am I doing it for a living.’

Born and raised in Peebles, Cherith’s journey started at college and, after graduating with an honours degree in

graphic design in 2005, she secured a job at design agency. Away from work, she spent time at Edinburgh Printmakers where she honed her screen-printing skills and began turning her designs into saleable items.

In 2010, she took a stall at Edinburgh’s West End Craft and Design Fair, which runs for the duration of the Festival, and used her entire holiday quota for the rest of the year to staff it.

The turning-point came when she started selling at SDX. She said: ‘It was only when I met Lynzi and had it explained to me that I found out that here was a wholly new ethos.

‘For a nominal rent, you get a display stand and staff to sell and organise your products. Best of all, you get all the sales revenue paid into your bank account. For an artist that is heaven sent – especially when you want to test the market.’

She added: ‘The arts is a growing phenomenon in Scotland and I would love to see a re-focusing of expressive arts in the school curriculum - developing creativity and skills.’
