2.1. How to develop as a trainer
Important in your role as a trainer is who you are and what connects you to the trainer profession. You are the instrument yourself. The better you know yourself and the better you can ‘handle’yourself, the betteryou can give content to the trainer profession. What are your motivations, values, beliefs, qualities, knowledge, and behaviour? How do you deal with tension, self-reflection,and self-development? Developing yourself as a trainer is a personal process. It has to do with your personality, your cultural background, your work experience, and with the moment you start as a trainer. As a trainer,you have to deal with many aspects and find your way: ➢ on a personal level (thinking about your own attitude, about how you do it, about dealing with your tension, how to make contact, how to deal with your limits, etc.), ➢ on a content level (if I have sufficient control of the material, how to answer if participants ask difficult questions, how toprepare myself well, etc.), ➢ on a didactic level (which working methods are suitable, how to structure the training, etc.), on a process level (how to deal with the group phases, with giving feedback, confronting and complimenting,etc.)
2.2. The Iceberg model of David McClellan
The Iceberg model of David McClelland looks at a person’s visible behaviour, knowledge and skills and the underlying unexpressed and unconscious deeper layers. In general, a person ’s knowledge, skills and behaviour can be found above the waterline of the iceberg.
Competencies are personal abilities that are decisive for successfully acting in a position or a situation. Acompetency can be compared in structure to an iceberg. Above water is the tip of the iceberg. That is the visible part of the iceberg. You can only see the things that are underwater in person if they do something with them. Behaviour is the tip of the iceberg. That behaviour is carried by the aspects that are underwater. As a trainer, your deeper-lying qualities, beliefs, values, standards,and inspiration are more important than the instrumental knowledge and skills.These deeper layers give youas trainer yourown unique colour.
