PRESIDENT'S REPORT 20/21 has been another unforgettable year at Carinya, and while it would be easy to talk about the negatives of yet another year of Covid difficulties, I would like to focus on what an amazing family we are: a family of residents, volunteers, staff, committee and entire community which has stayed linked, positive, safe and determined to get through these extremely challenging times. Thank you to you all.

We acknowledge the effort you put into looking after each other when group activities are not allowed, and access to a communal area is restricted. 2022 will see the construction of a gazebo and BBQ area, which we hope will provide a way to keep you connected with family and friends. Of high importance in our strategic plan is the development of the southern end of Farrell Drive into Parkland and a walking track. We are working hard to look at ways we can fund this initiative and know it will be welcomed by the entire Carinya family and extended community.

We value your ongoing interest and desire to get involved in the day-to-day activities at Carinya and hope that 2022 will see a time when we can engage in the many wonderful activities together.

TREASURER'S REPORT It is with great pleasure that I submit my treasurer's report on behalf of the finance and executive committee for the year ending 30th of June 2021. It has been my privilege to be part of such a wonderful team over the past 5 years and we have achieved so much in that time, however, there is still a lot of work to do in the ever-changing landscape in aged care.

We took a stance in this financial year to hold back on further unit development to make sure we had viable cash flows during this difficult period which proved prudent and correct given the difficult circumstances we have all faced over the last 12 months.

It has been a year of challenges, to say the least, with the impact of COVID and our new build, which in itself has been a real effort by all involved. It has been the biggest building project in Carinya’s short

history. We now have a 60-bed facility that we can be very proud of. It will be able to provide the best possible care in a brand-new modern facility which will be equal to anything currently in Gippsland.

The financials that have been tabled tonight represent a lower figure than previous years and this is a direct reflection of the difficulties we have faced through the pandemic. Staffing has been a challenge as well as cost overruns in delays with our build. The positive here is that we have still maintained a profit position, where other companies that run aged care facilities statewide have traded at a loss. 55% of all aged care facilities for profit or not for profit in the state have traded in the red. Our cash flow position has also maintained a positive position throughout that period. As always, any profits that Carinya has made have always gone directly back into the facility.

It’s important to us as well to meet the challenges of low-cost accommodation for the aged in Korumburra.

I want to acknowledge our wonderful fundraisers as well, brilliantly supported by Sarah Jackson. Over the 12 months, they have raised a staggering $142K. As I have said previously it has been a very difficult year and to achieve that amount doesn’t just happen. A large part of that support has come from our local farmers who have taken on animals to be raised to support Carinya. The team of Eddie Hams and Marie Hams, Alan Fraser, Sally Kyle and Brian Jefferies have done an unbelievable job for us.

With the Royal commission now completed, the recommendations from that inquiry are now starting to take effect with additional funding now beginning to flow into aged care facilities. This will allow Carinya to provide even more beneficial care and services to our residents with more staff to cater to their every need. Our Auditors again were extremely happy with our accounts for this financial year

Sarah, who is my assistant, does an amazing job of keeping us all on track and supporting me so that I can work strategically on Carinya. I would like to also thank all the staff at Carinya for their dedication to our residents and communities. From our clinical team to kitchen, cleaners and laundry, admin, and maintenance they all do an amazing job of supporting Carinya to achieve our goals sometimes during trying times. CLINICAL REPORT Agility, resilience, solidarity. It has been another year of milestones and challenges. A year where our perseverance and resilience have been stretched and tested. We have deep gratitude for all that this year has encompassed. We believe we have become stronger, with an even deeper understanding of our residents and support of our staff and volunteers.

Undoubtedly, the COVID-19 global pandemic has had a significant impact on our organisation and the aged care industry (globally). Managing our facility

Carinya has a dedicated and professional workforce of more than 90 staff who do their best to deliver high quality care 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, year in year out. Overall staffing has increased 29% over the year. Some of the most under looked and unsung heroes in our society and widespread spectrum of people working in aged care. The individuals that make up our workforce play a vital role in caring for our residents.

We have had numerous students continue their placement throughout the year, ensuring we are showcasing the industry. Students from Tafe Gippsland and other organisations have completed their studies in Diploma of Nursing and Certificates in Individual Support, most of which we have employed. Allowing students to complete their practical placements at Carinya has been rewarding for both students, staff, and residents. Our staff do a fantastic job every day. I continue to be humbled by the passion and care shown by the people who work at Carinya. They are the ones who bring our purpose to life, improving the quality of life for people in need each day, I would like to personally thank every staff member for the dedication and support you offer our residents daily - Thank you.

Carinya has moved forward with technology and recently implemented Electronic Medication Management Software. Webstercare Medsig medication management is a computerised system with a tablet on each medication trolley to improve medication administration. The new system, implemented in August 2021, enables our staff to administer the resident’s medications timely whilst

The royal commission into aged care quality and safety has already identified several issues that require resolutions. The standards focus more on consumer choice than systems and processes which is great for our residents. Over the last year, we have been working with our staff and residents in bedding down the standards and maintaining a focus on the resident. That is, ensuring our residents have a choice about their care and services. This puts our residents at the centre of all that we do, and it is the residents who shape their day – we the staff, are there to assist and care along the way.

Due to an increase in resident capacity and acuity, we are increasing our local doctor visits to the facility. Thank you to the Doctors and staff at Korumburra Medical Clinic and Sam and the team at Nyora Pharmacy for your ongoing supportive services to our residents.

Our physiotherapist has continued to achieve good results with an increase in the number of residents attending our pain management program. The program involves a 20-minute massage 4 days per week for each resident. The benefit to the residents includes a reduction in pain and improvement in movement and mobility. Carinya continues to also support residents with our daily exercise program in the morning, run by our physiotherapist and leisure and wellbeing team.

We have received continued support with other allied health services including regular podiatry visits, hearing, ophthalmology, and dental services.

Along with the aforementioned services, our referral process for dieticians, speech pathology, occupational therapy continues to enhance our resident’s health care and provide positive outcomes. These services have been maintained through the pandemic.

Finally, I wish to thank our residents and families who inspire us to enrich their lives daily.

It is truly a privilege to serve this organisation.

The leisure and wellbeing team has played an integral part in managing resident isolation during the year. Maintaining facetime calls for residents and families to continue communicating has been well received. The team continues to develop innovative and stimulating programs for our home.

The programs have been designed to meet the preferences and choices of our residents and continue to include the favourites such as Friday afternoon bingo, card groups, and craft sessions.

I have returned as coordinator, making up the team of six are Debbie, Jennifer, and Jas. Our program has been very adaptable this year not only with covid restrictions on volunteers being able to assist, as the redevelopment of the lodge has continued, but we have also had jackhammers, corridor detours, room changes, no large activity room, drills, and fire alarms to keep our days interesting. It has been worth it as now we already have a dementia support unit, new or refurbished rooms, an amazing kitchen and laundry, as well as the most beautiful dining rooms.

Our activity program is forever evolving and changing to meet the needs of resident’s individual needs. Craft, gardening, cake decorating, and card

In the 12 months since the last AGM, we have had the passing of 12 residents, there have been 28 respite residents visit us, throughout the year. We have grown from a 43-bed facility to now a 60-bed facility at present with 52 permanent residents.

Our volunteer program has been very interrupted due to restrictions and unfortunately, The Knit and Knatter group has decided to postpone coming back until 2022. The group has just donated $100 to the fundraising committee of Carinya.

MAINTENANCE REPORT After 20 years of running my own Building business, I decided to apply for the position of Maintenance Manager at Carinya Lodge.

I commenced at Carinya in June 2021. I was immediately impressed with the quality of the facility and the renovations that had taken place over the previous year. This reflects the happy vibe of the residents enjoying what the facility has to offer.

The last few months I have worked at Carinya has not always been easy. We have experienced the devastating effects of the pandemic, extreme storms, power outages, water supply outages, even an earthquake. During these trying times, I have been inspired by the “can do “attitude of all the staff who are always ready to pitch in and help when required.

The maintenance Department has since expanded with the arrival of Vince Lethbridge. Vince has experience in maintenance with a passion for gardening and computer/tv technology. He also brings a friendly customer service focus which is evidenced by his strong rapport with the residence.

Over the last few months, many changes have taken place in the Maintenance Department.

We have improved our methods of communication.

Our response times are vastly improved. This means we can quickly and effectively attend to any emergency and high-risk incident.

Moving forward and planning for the next 12 months we will look for continual improvement and maintain our strong focus on compliance and maintenance of vital infrastructure. We will look for ways to improve the facilities to enhance the quality of life for residents.

We look forward to strengthening our relationship with our many volunteers led by Greg Blackmore and Stuart Goadby and draw on their invaluable assistance in making Carinya an even better place.

We will continue to work alongside and build a stronger rapport with the many local Trades whose experience and expertise we draw on and who provide their services to Carinya.

The next 12 months will be an exciting time at Carinya with the completion of the Stage 5 development, the further construction of independent living units, the completion of the courtyard garden and outdoor gardens.

FUNDRAISING & GRANTS REPORT Again, Carinya’s fundraising efforts have been extremely hindered by the Covid pandemic restrictions.

Our usually very active Fundraising Committee are still enthusiastic but haven’t had opportunities to organise events that are typically well attended and successful. Hopefully, 2022 will be a better year.

The only activity that has been very successful is the calf raising program. Huge thanks to all our local farmers who donate their time and properties, to Sally Kyle who coordinates the program, and to Eddie Hams and Alan Fraser for keeping this running throughout these difficult times, not just with Covid but also with an unpredictable market.

Fundraising has generated over $140,000 in just two years and our committee has decided to use these funds to begin to develop a park for our Carinya residents and families. We are working closely with the unit residents to design this and currently are planning the gazebo and toilet. The park will include walking paths, native planting, seating, activity stations, BBQ, gazebo, able and disabled toilets, as well as parking bays and it will be a great asset for our community.

Carinya, as always still has fantastic community backing. The main contributors this year have been from the Korumburra Rotary Club, Strzelecki Lions and Greenhills Benevolent Society.

Other generous donations were from Tarwin District Auto and Machinery Club, Michaels IGA as well as numerous local families and organisations. Thank you to everyone.

Fundraising has been such a successful part of Carinya’s history, so two years of limited opportunities have taken its toll on what our facility can offer as extras. With this in mind, our Committee of Management has been very proactive this year with applications for grants.

Two successful grants were obtained from the South Gippsland Shire under their Covid 19 Community Support Package. $4,895 was received to purchase two computers for our Internet Café area to replace very old ones that no longer met the needs. This created a lovely area for our residents as a meeting place and learning station. The other, $1,430, was to purchase four Samsung tablets for staff to record medications and personal care notes, making management and access to information far more efficient, particularly for the safe administration of tablets.

We also received a South Gippsland Shire Community Grant of $8,702 to beautify the large, grey and unattractive brick retaining wall off the new Dementia wing. We plan to create five large murals to attach to the wall and we have commissioned a very talented local artist Melanie Caple.

There is another grant pending for $5,000 from Nutrien Ag Solutions to help keep our Calf Raising program going.

We will continue to seek funding for priority projects, particularly the development of our Carinya Parkland and the Sensory Garden for the new Dementia wing.

Grant money is so important for not-for-profit organisations such as Carinya, but they also require considerable input from the community to raise the expected component, sometimes up to 50%, so Carinya is very grateful to everyone who remains committed to our great community asset.
