Fouryearsago,inmy2018President’sReportI announced the commencement of a huge redevelopment to Carinya planned to be completed in 18 months The redevelopment and refurbishment program started early in 2019andatlastwearenowfinallyseeingthe light at the end of the tunnel, with the front entrance and car park almost at completion Whatanincrediblefouryearsithasbeen!
Furthertoourdevelopmentwewillsoonhave fourmoreindependentlivingunitsavailablein ourRetirementVillage Twoofthembeingour first3bedroomunitsbuilt,wehavehadalotof interestfromcommunitymembersseekingto joinourfamily
With recent COVID times it has been so hard to keep our extended Carinya family connected, we are certainly looking forward to a time when our Retirement Village residents can join us freely without masks and conducting RA tests before enteringtheagedcarefacility Thankyouforyour patience and understanding, we admire the effort youhaveputintolookingaftereachother,whileyou waitpatientlyforustoprovideacommunalareafor socialactivities

Most of us in the community now feel we are through the pandemic, with little mandated mask wearing,isolationorRAtesting However,thisisnot thecaseforstaffofCarinya;ourstaffhavebeenin masks and often full PPE for almost three years I cannotspeakhighlyenoughofeverystaffmember, who as a team, have continued to be vigilant in keepingourresidentssafe

Our staff were amazing and did their best to keep residents connected and entertained Mealswereallservedinrooms,activitieswere distributed, and residents continued to smile. Littledidweknowthatthiswasthefirstoffour outbreaks to contend with over the next few months.

Fixing this fundamental challenge of staff shortages, increased care minutes and the sustainabilityofsectorfundingisakeyfocus forboththenewGovernmentandagedcare providersintheyearahead Justrecently,the fundingmodelhaschangedfromAgedCare Funding Instrument (ACFI) to The Australian NationalAgedCareClassification(ANACC) The ANACC provides more equitable care fundingtoprovidersthatbettermatchresident needs with the costs of delivering care. Carinya received shadow assessments for mostresidentslateinthefinancialyear

AlongsideMEdsigisaprogramcalledMedsCom which enable our doctors to prescribe medicationselectronically Theprescriptionsare sentstraighttoourpharmacyinNyoraforquick delivery of required medications This enhancement of technology enables the improved safety of residents by reducing medication errors and preventing negative medicineinteractions.Itsupportscommunication betweenallthoseinvolvedinresidents'careand ensures continuity of medication making prescribing and dispensing easier and more efficient

As Carinya has now moved to the ANACC, we willstillseethebenefitsofprovidingalliedhealth services to our residents Sam, our physiotherapist has played a major role in improving the lives of residents and we thank Sam for his continued support throughout the previous years Sam will continue to provide physiotherapytoourresidents,itwilljustlooka little different Instead of providing a pain management program, Sam will shift towards offeringaphysiotherapyprogramindividualised totheresident’sclinicalrequirements Asweall knowhowmuchtheresidentsenjoytheirmorning exerciseprogram,andthiswillcontinuewithSam andtheleisureandwellbeingteam
Carinyaalsooffersotheralliedhealthservices suchasregularpodiatryvisits,ophthalmology, anddentalservices Carinyahasaccesstoad hoc speech therapy, dietician, and wound consultancy just to name a few All of the aforementioned allied health services play a vitalroleinenhancingtheresident’shealthand improvingpositivehealthoutcomes
OurkitchenteamhassignedupfortheMaggie Bear Foundation training modules for staff which has been a great success The 11 modules have provided the kitchen staff with ongoing training and access to resources to enable adequate nutrition is provided to our residents and ensures a great dining experience
The leisure and wellbeing team continue to provideawellsupportedteamandarangeof activities and social connections to our residents Carinya has also welcomed back AnglicanChurchservices,Fellowship,andthe Auxiliary We have also seen external entertainers and support groups return to Carinya to provide valuable engagements for ourresidents

As such our focus is on continuously improving our support for staff in this area, ensuring we continue to provide highquality care and support for our residents COVID has proved to be particularlychallengingforAgedCarestaff acrosstheboard.
Overthepast12monthsandasweadjusttoa newCOVIDnormalourstaffhavebeenfaced with a continuously and relentlessly challenging environment that has included coming in and out of lockdowns, additional workload associated with infection control, having to do extra hours and shifts to cover staffinisolation,providingemotionalsupport toourresidentsassociatedwiththestressors of COVID, as well as the overall staffing challenges associated with our Industry shortages
Tohelpsupportstaffwehaveimplementeda regular ‘one on one’ staff checkin program thatfocusesonsupportingourstaff’smental healthandwellbeingandstaffconsultation It alsoaimstoidentifyhowwecankeepbuilding on our current strengths and building and improvingotherworkforcesupportsoverall
Ourcheckinprogramconfirmedthat100%of our staff have really high levels of job satisfaction resulting from looking after our residentsandfeelingvaluedbyourresidents We are so appreciative that we have such a caring and passionate workforce who have beenessentialtoourabilitytocontinuetooffer high standards of quality care in such challengingtimes

Staff feedback also sparked the creation of our Resident Ideas group which is made up off self elected staff and residents who work towards identifying, communicating, and facilitating the residents’ideas,programs,andinitiatives
Communication was raised as a development area for Carinya by staff through the check in meetingsandasaresult,wehaveimplemented regular updates to staff from different departmentswithinCarinyaincludinganoverall update from Cindy, a Care Department update fromKateandaPeopleandCultureupdatefrom Jess Wealsohavecommunicationasoneofour Continuous Improvements as we continuously explorewaystodevelopthis
To develop and leverage our Individual staff strengths we are in the early stages of our Carinya Champion Program which identifies Champions in the areas of Dementia Care, Palliative Care, Complex Wounds, Dignity of Choice&PersonCenteredCare,Equipmentand Supplies, Mental Health and Wellbeing, Innovation in Aged Care and Social Policy in AgedCare Ourchampionswillundertakeextra training in their specialist areas, will assist with identifying and developing best practice within Carinyaandwillcommunicateanddeliverrelated training.
Recruitmentcontinuestobeamajorfocusarea forusaswecontinuetofaceaNationalIndustry shortageinagedcare Aswellascontinuingwith the more traditional recruitment channels includingadvertisingonjobplatformsandusing Industry recruitment, we have also offered a referral bonus to our staff, we have employed several trainees who are studying through our local training provider, and we are looking at several other options to support our staffing pipelines including offering an RN graduate program We will continue to explore new and innovative ways to attract staff to Carinya to supportourstaffinglevelsnowandintothefuture.
We are in the process of developing our first 2022/2023MentalHealthandWellbeingPlanwhich will identify and communicate our current and planned future initiatives to support our staff’s MentalHealthandwellbeing Wearecommittedto continuouslyimprovingwaystosupportourexisting workforce and strengthen our position as an employerofchoicewithinthelocalarea

South Gippsland Shire grant was able to provide $8,702 towards our beautification of theexisitinggreyretainingwall
Trivia night (fundraiser) raised $8,66974, this will be going towards the dementia garden WorkswillstartinNovember2022tothisarea

Expenses for the year have increased compared to previous reports Employment costsincreasedsignificantly,thisbeingdueto the hiring of more staff to cater for the expansionofthefacilityandCOVID19related staffingissues

Our major building works are nearing completion, andwelookforwardtotheKorumburraCommunity receivingthebenefitsofthemuchapprovedAged CareFacility
The financial cost to complete these works has exceeded the budget significantly This is due to COVID19 delays, increase costs of construction materials, availability of key trades and additional costs relating to latent conditions Construction needs not being allowed for and required rectificationworkshaveallcontributedtotheover budgetcosts
The committee recognises the cost overrun has greatly exceeded budget expectations and has been a significant concern The Committee have acceptedthisincreasetoensurethecompletionof worksistothestandardsthatareexpectedbythe community, also delivering a highquality fitfor purposeAgedCareFacility
Aswelooktothefuture,wehaveanumberof key objectives to work towards to ensure CarinyaremainsastrongprofitableAgedCare Facilityofchoice Weneedtoimproveonnew projects and opportunities to ensure they are undertaken and completed within scope and budget
WiththecompletionofourcurrentIndependent Living Units (ILU) builds, new infrastructure development works are required to ensure we cancontinuetheILUexpansionproject
Projects already in our consideration like the proposedCommunityCentrewillneedtobereestimated, taking into consideration the significantincreaseinconstructioncosts This will ensure we have the appropriate and availablefundingtomeettheconstructioncosts
AnewAgedCarefundingmodelwillcommence in the coming year, and we expect to see an increaseinfunding Thiswillsupportthegrowing needsofthefacility,deliveringenhancedaged caretoourresidentsandinvestinginimproved governance and management capability Ensuring our leadership teams are fully equippedandhavetheappropriateresourcesto meettheincreasingdemandsandexpectations inthiskeyarea
Currently, the Committee are embarking on a significant review of our Strategic plan Our currentplanwassetin2018andwearefiveyears into the 10year plan This is an important checkpoint that will enable us to assess and measureourperformanceagainstwhatweset out to achieve, consider new objectives and redefineourpriorities Thiswillensurethenext fiveyearsandthefiveyearsbeyondcontinueto evolve, grow, and ensure Carinya remains a highlyvaluedcommunityagedcarefacility
