Tofield and area community brings in record haul via Food Drive MOUSH JOHN Editor

Last Saturday, Sept.

25, Tofield and area community came together to donate 2680.8 lbs of food to the Tofield-Ryley and Area Food Bank (TRAFB).

This surpasses the 2018 total, considered the highest ever of 1781.1 lbs.

“We here at the Food Bank are absolutely gobsmacked with the results of this drive!” said Dawn Arnold, TRAFB President. “Our shelves are now full and this abundance will take us through several months of hampers.”

Members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Tofield went around the community gathering the donations from Tofield, Ryley, and surrounding areas.

According to Dan Hillyer, one of the main organizers of the Food Drive, last year due to covid restrictions they weren’t able to deliver bags door to door and as a result, the donations were few.

“This year we had more volunteers than ever. The biggest difference is the people; this community is incredibly generous.”

He sadi that there were homes that offered five or six bags.

“It is amazing how a well-oiled machine works,” he explained.

“The Food Bank shelves were looking pretty empty. Thanks to the generosity of our local residents, things are looking much better now.

“Over 400 lbs came in from Ryley! What a beautiful way to get work together to strengthen our community.”

Battle River-Crowfoot MP Kurek ready to get back to work in Ottawa After a whirlwind election campaign, Battle River Crowfoot incumbent Damien Kurek watched the federal election results with his family in front of his own television for the first time.

Kurek was returned to parliament with 71.3 per

“Instead of providing leadership and focusing on the country, the Liberals chose to try and put their political self interests ahead of the best interests of the country.

“Whether we see the Winnipeg Lab scandal, the WE charity scandal, and there’s more coming up with the SNC Lavalin scandal; there’s all of these things and for an attempt to shut those issues down, it’s interesting that Canadians said ‘I don’t think so.’

“Canadians may not

have wanted a change, but they also didn’t want to hand the keys over to a Prime Minister who increasingly, I’m hearing, Canadians think can’t be trusted.

“There’s a lot of work to be done. It’s somewhat tragic, last week was the week parliamentarians were supposed to be getting back to work in Ottawa, instead, we’ll end up getting back in an almost identical parliamentary makeup, but a number of weeks will now go past before parliament resumes.

“At a time when Canadians have demanded leadership, there’s been a vacuum of that.

“Certainly from the context of being a member of the Opposition, I’ll certainly be asking those questions on behalf of the people of Battle RiverCrowfoot.”

Tofield disc golf course proposal ready to enhance fairgrounds Kerry Anderson Publisher

Tofield Disc Golf Club made a presentation to Tofield Town Council on Sept. 13, proposing a ninehole disc golf course be constructed at the fairgrounds.

After hearing the presentation, Council approved the proposal in principle subject to design approval and a temporary course will be set up to best determine final design.

According to organizer Derek Smith, disc golf would be a free sporting event enjoyable to young and old. It requires nothing more than players to supply their own discs, and can be played at any time of year.

“This amenity would give us more opportunity to get outside and meet up with friends, or spend some quality time with the family,” Smith said in his presentation letter. “You can play a round in about one hour so it’s easy to squeeze in a game before dinner or whenever is convenient.”

He added that it would also attract a tourist element, with people coming to play the course or to participate in tournaments.

The plan is to build the course around the buildings, ball diamonds and spray park at the fairgrounds.

Disc golf is played much like regular golf, but instead of clubs and a ball players use a frisbee-style disc and toss it into a supported metal basket. Like golf the object is to complete the course in the fewest attempts.

According to the Professional Disc Golf Association (PDGA), there are over 7,000 disc golf courses around the world played in some 40 countries.

There are over 71,000 members of he PDGA worldwide.

In Canada alone, there are 277 disc golf courses, with 48 in Alberta.

Smith says the proposed Tofield course would involve nine holes, and a par 29 with all but two holes being par three.

“The topography of this area offers a great opportunity to make each hole unique to play,” he said, “it has areas for wide-open straight shots, tricky shots around obstacles, dog’s legs lefts and rights.

“The tee areas and target locations are not complete yet, the development of the course will be slow and methodical and change based on feedback.”

Smith anticipates the course to cost in the range of $15,000, with opportunities for corporate advertising revenue and donations.

Tofield RCMP: assault complaint in Holden Sgt. Lee Knelsen Tofield RCMP

The Tofield RCMP responded to 52 occurrences from Sept. 20 to 26, 2021 (inclusive). Also included in these calls for service were 30 traffic complaints/tickets, six

suspicious person/vehicle complaints, two wellbeing checks, one 911 complaints/false alarms, one motor vehicle collisions and traffic enforcement provided by the K Division Traffic Unit.

On Sept. 20, Tofield RCMP responded to an

assault complaint in Holden. RCMP arrived and spoke to parties involved and were able to separate them for the evening without further incident.

On Sept. 21, Tofield RCMP responded to a theft complaint in

Tofield. RCMP spoke to the complainant who advised that a customer had attended the business and failed to pay for item(s) before leaving.

RCMP were able to locate and speak to the suspect and confirmed that the item(s) would be paid for.

On Sept. 22, Tofield RCMP responded to a commercial break and enter and theft from a business in Beaver County. RCMP arrived and found that entry was gained to the business through a fence and once inside, suspects stole fuel and a company truck. This file is still under investigation.

On Sept. 22, Tofield RCMP responded to a mischief complaint in Beaver County. RCMP arrived and found that a rural property residence had the front doors damaged although it appeared nothing was stolen. This file is still under investigation.

On Sept. 22, Tofield RCMP responded to a mischief complaint in Tofield. The complainant advised that a number of youth were damaging the public gazebo at the end of main street.

RCMP arrived, identified all parties involved,

contacted the parents of the youth and provided warnings.

On Sept. 23, Tofield RCMP responded to a number of complaints of large loose dogs in Ryley.

RCMP attended and were able to locate and speak to the owner of the large dogs and warn them about continued complaints and the risk to the public.

On Sept. 23, Tofield RCMP responded to a mischief complaint in Holden. RCMP spoke to the complainant who advised the RCMP that a suspect was believed to be responsible for tampering with another individuals vehicle in the community. This file is still under investigation.

On Sept. 23, Tofield RCMP responded to a sexual assault investigation in Beaver County.

RCMP spoke to the complainant who advised of an unwanted sexual encounter in the past. This file is still under investigation.

On Sept. 24, Tofield RCMP responded to a theft complaint in Beaver County. RCMP spoke to the complainant who advised that someone had attended his residence, cut a gate lock and stole a

large power tool. This file is still under investigation.

On Sept. 26, Tofield RCMP performed a traffic stop on an individual driving in Tofield.

RCMP were able to determine that the driver was impaired and held a graduated drivers license which requires a zero alcohol condition.

RCMP issued a Provincial IRS suspension to the driver and seized the vehicle and license for 30 days.

Updates from previous investigations On April 21, Tofield RCMP responded to a fraud/theft complaint from a business located in Tofield. RCMP attended and spoke to the complainant who reported that a past employee had suspected to have stolen a significant amount of money from the business while employed. On Sept. 20, Tofield RCMP charged Connie Marie Forst (47) of Lamont County for the following: Criminal breach of trust; Fraud over $5,000; Theft over $5,000 x 2.

A warrant has been issued for the arrest of Connie Marie Forst on the above mentioned charges.

Loose Ends: Final Farewell

It’s a sad day when you have to say a final farewell to an old friend.

One day he’s there and then, wham, he’s gone.

His name was Clark, not

Kent; he didn’t have the legs for leaping tall buildings.

We didn’t mean to take him for granted, but he was always ready to give us a hand whenever we needed one, prepared to lighten the load and make our lives easier. I regret not letting him know how appreciated he was. He wasn’t easy to hug though, and even the tiniest kiss would have been weird.

His pain was obvious toward the end but I didn’t think the noises

he made meant anything; Clark often groaned.

Luckily Hubby was more tuned in; he discovered some of Clark’s parts weren’t working (advancing age does that) But it came too late.

Our old friend was pronounced dead at 2:34 last Thursday afternoon, leaving a vast void that needed filling.

I didn’t cry but tears did well up. After so many years, how does one do that? We want his twin or at least as

close a replica as possible – Clark 2. But as so often happens, he’d been with us so long that they don’t make ‘em like that anymore.

Why people think we always need a new and improved model is something I’ve never understood. I mean, why are we always expected to upgrade?

Clark was perfect.

The last time this happened we wanted a new toaster, just like the old one. Nothing fancy, just provide our morning

golden brown toast and don’t spit out bagels with blackened sides.

But no such luck, we had to get one with six light-up buttons across the front (I still expect little green men to pop out and invade the kitchen), takes up way too much counter space and thinks black is the new golden brown.

WANTED DEAD OR ALIVE

Alberta RCMP Livestock Investigation Unit has charged two males related with fraudulent cattle purchases in Tofield.

On Thursday, Aug. 19, a report was received by the Alberta RCMP Livestock Investigation Unit regarding alleged fraudulent purchase of cattle in Tofield.

The Unit’s investigation determined suspects had allegedly purchased cattle with a fraudulent cheque and transported the cattle out of province without brand inspection. Livestock Services of

Saskatchewan were called to assist and a location was identified where the cattle were believed to be grazing.

Earlier this month, on Thursday, Sept. 2, the Alberta RCMP Livestock Investigation Unit, with assistance of Livestock Services of Saskatchewan, executed a search warrant in Spiritwood, SK, seizing two pure bred Black Angus bulls and locating evidence of additional victims.

On Sept. 16, a subsequent search warrant was executed where Alberta

RCMP Livestock Investigation Unit recovered cattle subject of alleged fraud committed by the same suspects in Thorsby, Alta., and Lloydminster, SK. A total of 19 animals were seized and identified through registered livestock brands and/or registered pure bred tattoos.

Shane and Shanon Hoff, both of Two Hills, have both been charged with Fraud Over $5,000 and are scheduled to appear in Vegreville Provincial Court on Oct. 18.

Solving poverty needs all hands on deck UNIVERSITY OF ALBERTA Guest Columnist

Solving poverty in our communities goes far beyond charities and social agencies.

Graduates with business, civic planning, arts and other backgrounds have just as much to contribute as social workers, according to University of Alberta poverty researcher Maria Mayan.

“We have great young thinkers within our university who want to make a difference in the world no matter what discipline they are studying,” said Mayan, a professor in the School of Public Health and associate director of the Community-University Partnership for the Study of Children, Youth, and Families who also sits on the Stewardship Round Table for EndPovertyEdmonton.

“The question is: what part of the world are you going to change?”

Mayan’s research team recently produced a discussion paper to describe what an inclusive economy might look like in Edmonton, including providing a definition for what a “good job” looks like. (Hint: it includes livable pay, health benefits and paid sick leave).

That means construction project managers, corporate procurement officers and human re-

sources personnel have an equally important role to play in creating a more inclusive economy through who they hire and what they buy, Mayan explained.

The research team reported that one in 10 Edmontonians – or nearly 120,000 people – experience poverty. And it’s more likely for women, racialized individuals, Indigenous people, single adults and single parents.

Up to 70 per cent have work but not enough to pay for their basic living costs.

The research forms the basis for EndPovertyEdmonton’s work encouraging innovative approaches to creating good jobs for a broader range of people as the economy recovers from the COVID-19 pandemic.

“An inclusive approach makes it possible for everyone to participate in the economy instead of being an outcome and a statistic of the economy,” said Mayan.

Cities such as Edmonton, Calgary and soon Fort McMurray are taking the lead with new “social procurement” policies for the contractors they hire.

well as financial goals.

“Companies demonstrate how they can add social value to the work they will be undertaking for the contract. For example, they could partner with an organization that helps new Canadians find work or they could ensure they are paying all their employees a living wage,” said Susannah Cameron, manager of strategic initiatives for EndPovertyEdmonton.

“In the end, we’re not just helping the City of Edmonton leverage their existing budget but helping companies see all the ways they can contribute to ending poverty in our community,” Cameron said.

Much like the movements that sprang up during COVID-19 to encourage consumers to “buy local” as interna-

tional supply chains dried up, the pandemic is helping companies realize that broadening their hiring practices is good for business, explained Brooks Hanewich, manager of strategic initiatives for EndPovertyEdmonton.

“Some of the systems that broke with COVID have industry rethinking their labour pools and purchasing because hiring temporary foreign workers and even interprovincial migrants is not as easy,” Hanewich said.

“There is a window of opportunity for change right now.”

“There’s also a younger labour force, many of whom are university grads, who are really pushing within their companies, because they want to work for companies that align with their values,” said Hanewich.

EndPovertyEdmonton brings together companies, trainers, unions and large employers to work on overcoming systemic barriers such as racism and helping diverse workers succeed.

It is also part of the Alberta Living Wage Network, which will soon launch an accreditation program for employers who want to demonstrate their pay is fair.

“Jobs don’t just provide income for people,” said Cameron. “They can provide people with social connections, improved health and housing stability, and help to shift our community’s view on the value of things like child care and cultural diversity.

“These sorts of changes illustrate through action how addressing poverty benefits us all and pro-

duces a community where everyone can meaningfully participate,” she said.

In answer to doubters who may think ending poverty is not possible, Mayan responds: “It was very intentional to not call it poverty reduction or alleviation because that means it’s acceptable at a certain level that there are people still living in poverty.

Just this past week it was learned that any children out of school were presumed to have COVID-19 by AHS, and recorded as such according to the Province’s Chief Medical Officer Dr. Deena Hinshaw. But a COVID outbreak in Edmonton has prompted a West Edmonton Elementary School to switch to online learning for the time being.

The number of schools across Alberta with suspected or confirmed outbreaks of COVID-19 are figures the government has been unwilling to release as of Sept. 24.

Beaver Regional Arts Society dissolves Patricia Harcourt Staff Reporter

The ad deadline for the October 13th paper will be Friday, Oct. 8th by 5:00 P.M.

It’s the end of an era for a local entertainment legend in Holden.

The Beaver Regional Arts Society (BRAS) is dissolving after four decades entertaining the public with a vast array of performers in a theatre full of character and history.

BRAS President Christine Mackay made the announcement last week following a recent board meeting.

“The directors of the Beaver Regional Arts Society made the difficult decision to dissolve the society, which means it will no longer be presenting performances at the theatre in Holden,” said Mackay in the statement.

The main reason offered concerned an inability to host shows for two seasons in a row due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and now another season would have to be forfeited.

celebrations during the 2019/20 season were interrupted by the cancellation of the final show due to the COVID-19 pandemic,” read the statement. “Since that time the 2020/21 and 2021/22 seasons have also been cancelled due to the ongoing uncertainty with COVID-19 and the constantly changing regulations.”

During an interview, Mackay said the current board of directors has literally run the show for many years and isn’t getting any younger.

“We just decided if we’ve missed two years, it will take so long to build it back up,” she explained. “Over the years a large number of our patrons have been groups from Edmonton and other areas who have come by bus to enjoy the performances and supper at the hall afterwards.

“Without these groups our audiences are too small to make it financially feasible because artist fees have increased dramatically over the years.

“Our board members feel it would take a considerable amount of time and work to build up our patron numbers to operate successfully again so the decision has been made to dissolve.”

Mackay added: “We definitely rely on busloads of seniors who come out from the city but with this pandemic they won’t be coming out any time soon.

“We just decided it was time to pack it in.”

Plus, the BRAS board members are mainly seniors and no new members are joining.

“There have been no new board members for years,” she said, which means the volunteers on these kinds of boards have to “stay on forever and a day.”

Mackay said holding a

2021/22 season would not have been possible in any case, even though there are venues that can open up under the province’s latest public health restrictions.

“We definitely weren’t having a season anyway,” she said. “We would have had to book performers last spring.

And things have changed over the years.

Artists are charging a lot more.”

For that reason, “we haven’t made money on our performances in the last while,” she said, noting that “prices were kept low to attract patrons.”

There are nine people on the BRAS board, all in their 70s and 80s except for someone in their 50s, who made the decision to close down.

“It was a unanimous feeling and decision for sure,” said Mackay.

Community organizations made money by hosting buffet style suppers after the performances, working in conjunction with BRAS. Mackay said the suppers would be missed, “because they are fundraisers for the community groups,” which were run independently of the concert series organizers.

Some 250 people would go through the buffet line for one supper. Many would eat and then leave to go back home. “It was all set up so it went very quickly.”

The BRAS Board signed off with the following words of farewell: “The Beaver Regional Arts Society board members are truly appreciative of the support during the past 40 years. Thanks to patrons, board members, volunteers, all those who provided the excellent meals and anyone who contributed to our organization.”

CAO removed by outgoing County Council in contentious close vote Clr. With only one meeting left before October 18’s municipal election, Reeve Jim Kallal (Division 2) made the motion to have Beck removed, which passed 3-2. The search is now on for a replacement as council intends to consider candidates at its final meeting Oct. 6.

The vote on Kallal’s motion to remove Beck was a contentious one with a 3-2 split often seen on this council.

Division 1 Councillor Kevin Smook and Division 4 Councillor Barry Bruce voted against the motion, while Kallal, Deputy Reeve Gene Hrabec (Division 3), and Division 5 Councillor Dale Pederson were in favour.

Smook had requested a recorded vote.

The key motion read as follows: “Moved by Reeve Kallal that the appointment of Bob Beck, Beaver County Chief Administrative Officer, be revoked effective October 1, 2021.” CARRIED.

Without his motion being voted on, Kallal prematurely announced that Beck would be leaving as of October 1 after serving 12 years as the county’s CAO. Kallal thanked him for his time in that office. Kallal then said that Margaret Jones would continue as Interim CAO “while the search for a new CAO goes on.”

Both Smook and Bruce spoke against the motion.

“This is a very disappointing day for Beaver County,” Smook said.

“Mr. Beck gave 12 years to the service of Beaver County as our CAO and I thank him for that.

“If this motion is passed, then the majority of council has decided to go in a different direction, and whenever that happens, it is an expensive proposition,” he said.

“The significant sum of money that will be paid to Mr. Beck upon his departure could have been used much more wisely to fix our roads, enhance our county, or it could be kept in taxpayers’ pockets.

“I’d like to remind everyone that Mr. Beck has been on leave since the middle of June. An organizational review is taking place and this decision was made prior to the organizational review being accept-

ed by council, and in advance of an annual performance evaluation of the CAO by council which is required under the MGA,” he continued. “This move is unnecessary and fiscally irresponsible of council and we must be held accountable for this decision.”

Bruce agreed: “I’d like to echo the sentiments of Councillor Smook,” also predicting that relieving Beck of his duties “will be a very expensive endeavour.

“It saddens me we are losing so much money that could have been put to roads,” and other needs, he said.

Hrabec thanked Beck “for his years of service,” but said the CAO’s departure meant “a new chapter for Beaver County,” and for that reason he supported the motion. “And I look forward to moving ahead,” he said.

Pederson also supported the motion, telling council he had researched parts of the Municipal Government Act, the Beaver County orientation manual and Chronicle articles before coming to his decision.

He also stressed that his vote was made independently: “I’m not in anybody’s pocket,” he said.

“I believe it’s the best going forward.”

Kallal called Beck’s leaving, “a step in the right direction,” adding that he believed the removal would be vindicated once the results of the current organizational review were made public.

Several motions took place, starting with the vote to remove Beck, which passed 3-2.

Another motion by Pederson was passed to approve a $2,000 per month salary increase starting September 1 to an unnamed county employee, who was only identified by number.

Council also agreed to start looking immediately for an interim chief administrative officer (motion

by Hrabec) by inviting “expressions of interest from the Beaver County Leadership Team,” with a closing date of October 29 for submissions. Margaret Jones, the county’s Assistant CAO, has been acting as interim CAO up to this point.

candidates for consideration at council’s last meeting October 6.

Smook attempted by motion to “make the full cost of the termination of the CAO made public immediately upon payment,” of severance. However, that motion was defeated 3-2.

Kallal opposed the motion stating the financial implications would come out later in the financial reports, and said the issue is still in the hands of the county lawyers and is being kept confidential.

Hrabec agreed with Kallal that the release of that information “would break confidentiality as stated by the county lawyers.”

“Legal counsel is dealing with this,” said Kallal. “Full disclosure

will come out in the annual report. It’s still a legal and confidential matter.”

“It’s something this council has decided and I believe this council should be held accountable for it,” replied Smook, who said getting this figure next spring was too long to wait.

The motion was defeated with Smook and Bruce in favour and Kallal, Hrabec, and Pederson opposed.

Reeve Kallal is not running again for a seat on county council in the upcoming October 18 election. His division will be decided between Lionel Williams and Zsuzsanna Hemperger.

Deputy Reeve Hrabec is in a race with Ron Yarham, who previously held the Division 3 seat.

Smook and Pederson were both returned to their seats by acclamation, while Bruce has two other challengers in his division, Dale Collison and Shawn O’Shea.

OTIS award nominations for watershed stewardship now open The Battle River Watershed Alliance (BRWA) is looking for nominees for the 2021 OTIS awards.

The OTIS Award for being outstanding in stewardship has four categories eligible for nomination, being: individual, youth, business, and organization.

BRWA says, “The OTIS Award is a way to recognize businesses, organizations, individuals, and youth in the Battle River and Sounding Creek watersheds who are OuTstanding In Stewardship.

“Stewardship is taking action to care for our watershed, including the land, air, water, and biodiversity. It also supports healthy communities, including our culture and economy, now and into the future.”

The 2020 OTIS Award winners represent a wide range of projects.

The Individual award went to Glen Hvenegaard, a profession of Environmental Studies at the University of Alberta Augustana Campus since 1994.

“Glen has shared his knowledge and passion for the natural world with countless students, inspiring environmental conservation and action for sustainability.

“In the community, Glen actively promotes stewardship as the organizer of the annual Camrose Christmas Bird Count, and through the Camrose Wildlife and Stewardship Society.

“He is a strong supporter of environmental education and outreach events,

and the Camrose Purple Martin Project.”

Last year’s Youth winners was the Hughenden Public School.

“Youth at Hughenden Public School have had some fantastic inquiry-based learning opportunities thanks to their Science teacher Susan Reynolds.

“The school-wide Inquire at HPS and Beyond project aims to foster a culture of innovation, inquiry, problem solving and critical thinking particularly associated with STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics) fields, including energy focused inquiry-based lab activities.”

The OTIS Business Award went to Camrose Energy.

“Camrose Energy is a leading local energy supply business focused on accessibility, sustainability, and supporting the community.

“Camrose energy is a strong believer in moving towards renewable energy.

“They offer the Green Energy Program, which allows customers to choose how much of their energy consumption comes from green sources.

“They also host the Solar Club Program, which supports micro-generators, for only the cost of a donation to the local food bank.

“To give back to the community, Camrose Energy donates 10 per cent of their profits to one of four community organizations, including the Battle River Watershed Alliance.”

Last year’s Organization category was won by the Millet and District Museum.

BRWA says, “In the spring of 2020, the Museum, in partnership with the Millet in Bloom committee, created an outdoor classroom in the Pipestone Park, along the Eyot Creek.

“The classroom contains seating and signage presenting the Museum’s native plant research.

“In 2019, after taking part in the BRWA’s Finding Common Ground 2.0

energy tour, Museum staff shared their experience with ‘Our Common Ground’ presentations within the local community, as well as with the Central Alberta Regional Museums network.

“The museum also took action and reduced their energy use and carbon footprint.”

The Federal Government recently passed legislation to create September 30 as the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. This was one of the 94 recommendations of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s report.

To avoid line-ups, please consider early remittance. Postdated cheques are being accepted. INTERAC, cheques, online, pay simply and telephone banking are encouraged. Please ensure adequate time for payment processing.

Beaver County Council applauds the Government of Canada for the creation of this day of recognition. The legacy of residential schools and indeed, the role of indigenous people in our country, our Province, and in our area should be acknowledged and commemorated.

While September 30 is a federal statutory holiday, the Alberta Government has not yet designated September 30 as a Provincial holiday under the Employment Standards Code.

Since the County mirrors Provincial holidays as paid holidays for its staff, September 30 will not be a holiday in 2021 and the office will be open.

However, Council is committed to taking some time to consider how best to provide a meaningful recognition of the residential school system, and how to honour and respect the history and culture of indigenous people. They will be considering the matter further in 2022.

Day of Older Persons October 1 has been proclaimed Day of Older Persons in Alberta and in Beaver County. Day of Older Persons is an occasion for Beaver County to celebrate the profound contributions of seniors in our homes, communities, and workplaces.

Continued from Page 2 thinks the NDP will side as much with the Liberal party, Kurek said: “We saw it in the last parliament, both under Andrew Scheer and Erin O’Toole. The opposition parties, although we may disagree on policy specifics, were able to use the opposition majority to demand accountability, and move some important things forward even when the Liberals didn’t necessarily want that to be the case.”

Kurek said he found Trudeau’s acceptance speech quite troubling.

“He talked about fighting for those who didn’t vote for him but dismissed their concerns at a time when many Canadians simply demanded leadership.”

Kurek says he is encouraged by the opportunity to head back to Parliament with the opportunity to represent the people of Battle River Crowfoot, for the rural concerns that are unique to this region.

He says not just for things like the national debt and deficit, but also inflationary pressures.

“Those are real issues that affect the pocketbooks of Canadians.” He said those are the issues top of mind of many of the people he contacted over the campaign.

As Kurek campaigned, he said it was very different this time around, campaigning as the incumbent, adding, “Time and time again I heard that this was an election that no one wanted, and in almost every way, folks were frustrated.

They were frustrated with the election call, frustrated with the status of the economy and the fiscal situation.

“I think it speaks to a need for leadership, and in my role, to be able to fight for the interests of the folks around here, to be able to provide some of that leadership locally. That’s something that I take really seriously, and as we go forward, I’m hopeful that we can move things in the right direction.

“Certainly there’s a lot of things, where now having been the incumbent, after the five-week pause on the parliamentary side of things, I’m really feeling today the sense that I can simply get back to work.

“I’m a firm believer that politics is a conversation, and that conversation doesn’t only happen during an election campaign, it happens every day in between.

“It’s encouraging to have the mandate after this election, but a lot of things that I’ve talked about since first started running for office; making sure the principals of good governance are represented in the capital, that there’s a strong rural voice, and that rural interests are heard, those sorts of things, I think I am more equipped than ever to make sure that I continue fighting for.”

Kurek says the challenges related to being a member of parliament during the COVID pandemic have been very unique; from the rule book almost tossed out the window, and in terms of votes being cast via Zoom.

“It’s been a steep learning curve for all parliamentarians.

“About 90 per cent of Canada’s population is in major urbans, but that 10 per cent, which is disproportionately also an economic driver for our country, they deserve the same access to services, the same quality of care as their urban counterparts, and I want to make sure they are represented.”

Kurek said many times over his campaign that he was proud to be an Albertan and proud to be a Canadian, and that you do not have to choose between the two.

“In the midst of the challenges we faced, folks are looking for reasons to be hopeful.

“The things like being to say look, although we face challenges as a country, we can focus on the things that unite us. We can look at our past and our present and our fu-

ture and be hopeful that there are better days ahead.

“There’s a lot of angst out there. But to be able to simply try to bring that hopeful message is very, very important. It’s something that I’ve taken really really seriously, especially over the last couple of months where I’ve seen an increased level of divisiveness. Let’s unite around the things that are worth uniting around.

“In the coming weeks we will be focused on that very thing; moving Canada forward.”

Kurek had huge thanks for everyone who not only put their names on the ballot alongside his own, but who put their names on the ballot and ran a campaign in rural Alberta. “That is not an easy thing to do, and kudos to anybody who puts in the work.

“It’s unfortunate that there are some parties who think that a placeholder is an acceptable thing for rural Alberta.

“Certainly for those candidates who not just had their name on the ballot but who participated in the campaign, knocking on doors, kudos to them.

“That’s what makes our democracy strong. I have a tremendous amount of respect for anyone who puts themselves out there like that.”

Kurek also expressed gratitude to those who worked for Elections Canada. “There are so

many people who make elections happen, not just federally but locally, and they deserve a shout out as well.

“Also those on the campaign teams, who put a lot of time and effort and dollars, whether that’s putting up signs, knocking on doors, or handing out brochures.

“I’m certainly appreciative of my team as well, and my family, my wife and kids, they deserve a huge shout out, because

that was a 36-day hiatus from being basically at home, especially with a three-month-old at home, that’s wasn’t necessarily easy on my wife.

“And kudos to the families of all the candidates that I’m sure now understand the challenges of what it is to campaign in rural Canada.”

Kurek himself put nearly 10,000 km on his vehicle during the brief campaign period, he says.

Two-term Beaver County Councillor Hrabec proud of accomplishments, wants another term focusing on communication Kerry Anderson Publisher

Now with nearly two completed terms on Beaver Council, Division 3 incumbent Gene Hrabec will be asking voters to put him in for another four years.

Hrabec will go up against former councillor Ron Yarham as Division 3 representative. Both men have challenged one another before in prior elections, both winning the position and also losing.

“I take an active role in my job as Councillor and give it 100 percent,” Hrabec said, noting he has been Chairs of Beaver Foundation, BESC and Zone 5, which covers

14 East Rural Municipalities.

Hrabec runs a family farm in Division 3, with some livestock but mostly grain. He has been employed with the Edmonton Police Service for over 33 years.

My goal in re-election will be to continue working on a project that I was instrumental in, with AHS and Seniors Housing to keep the Holden Lodge open.”

Hrabec said he wants to help provide better public works service to residents, and “better specifications and quality of gravel, adding two grader divisions to provide better and quicker service.”

He said the county has made strides in recent months through better communication and co-

operation.

“I believe changing the culture and communication is the only way that Beaver County can enhance its service.”

Two accomplishments he feels proud of on council have been lobbying the provincial government on behalf of ratepayers, and standing up for ratepayers on the formation of the municipal crown corporation for Claystone Waste.

“We have been able to curb the crippling affect of increased taxes during the pandemic and to also ensure the viability of our local businesses in Beaver County,” he stated.

“Agriculture continues to be strong and stable with excellent livestock and grain marketing. We were side saddled with poor planning as there was no road agreement for the new grain handling facility from the previous term, but made

Veteran Beaver County Councillor Yarham said there is a long list of problems with the present council that needs to be addressed He said his list of problems with the present council is long.

“If you have concerns with the current council,

please support me.”

Yarham and his wife Linda have four children and nine grandchildren. They farm

south-west of Holden, and have for 23 years.

“We are currently raising cattle and growing hay,” said the mas-

ter electrician, who owned a business in Edmonton before farming in Beaver County, Division 3.

Veteran Beaver County Councillor Ron Yarham has decided to run once again to represent Division 3 in the upcoming municipal election on Oct. 18.

Yarham will go up against incumbent Gene Hrabec as Division 3 representative. Both men have challenged one another before in prior elections, both winning the position and also losing. “… I had not planned on running this term, however I was approached by numerous people with their concerns,” said Yarham.

“After reviewing their concerns, I chose once again to offer to serve the fine residents of Beaver County.”

Yarham, who has 10 years of county council experience, said a list of problems has arisen with the new council that he hopes to address if reelected.

“One of the concerns is the road-side mowing,” he said. “As we know, by not mowing until fall, it

creates a road hazard with the deer and moose population as well as allowing more weeds to reach maturity and spread seeds which may be a very costly problem to clean up.”

Another problem that has arisen has been the costs of fighting fires in the region, Yarham points out.

“This past spring while changing carriers, it was brought to my attention by the insurance company that our area has one of the highest rates in the province. This is reflected in our premiums and in many cases the cost can exceed our coverage.

“This needs to be addressed, I was under the impression that the purpose of the commission was to reduce cost and not to become a runaway train,” said the prospective councillor.

“It’s report card time,” said Yarham, “a time when the residents decide if they are happy with what has been happening with council.

“Without choice, the residents can’t be heard.”

Lougheed family turns COVID project into new business venture Leslie Cholowsky The Community Press There’s a new sensation in bacon in east central Alberta, and you can trace it back to Twin Oak Farms near Lougheed.

Dan and Shelly Skoberg and their blended family of five children live and work on the family farm. Twin Oak Farms Ltd. was established over a century ago, and the Skobergs say it has grown and evolved over the years to include a bit of everything.

And lately, that even includes producing dry cured bacon in five different flavours that’s taken the region by storm.

Skobergs farm 3,700 acres, growing wheat, barley, oats, canola, and alfalfa; do some custom farming on another 2,000 acres, and raise a variety of livestock.

“The kids have market steers that they feed and care for, for 250 days, then sell for beef to local neighbours.

“They also have about 250 laying hens that must be cared for.

“Our farm also includes horses, butcher pigs, dogs, and cats.”

The Skobergs say, “On the farm, we follow the old philosophy of ‘learn to do by doing.’”

There’s no mistaking that this is a 4-H family, and that ‘learn by doing’ guides their whole operation.

During the initial COVID lockdown, the family had just had some of their pigs butchered, and decided to take the time to come up with best recipe to dry cure and process their own bacon.

The Skobergs say, “There were a lot of trials, a few misses, and a lot of taste testing, both within their household and with extended family and friends.”

After perfecting an original recipe, they started trying some new flavour combinations, first incorporating maple, and perfecting that as well.

They say they knew they’d come up with something special when

their testers started asking for more, and more, and they ran out altogether.

As a bonus, they found that they actually enjoyed the bacon-making process, and experimenting with new flavours.

But deciding to take that jump meant a big learning curve ahead, “from nutrition labels to pack-

aging to getting government inspections, our lives got real busy, real fast, and we were loving it!”

Skobergs started selling their bacon officially by the end of 2020, and the whole venture has virtually exploded since then.

They initially started selling through social media to friends and family, and

sold out their first offering in less than a week.

“We were in shock!

That’s when we realized that we had something special,” they say. “The idea grew from something to do during COVID into a real business.”

As they and the family scrambled to keep up with demand, they told

their children: “Welcome to being an entrepreneur!”

Loving it so much that they jumped in and built ‘the bacon barn’ in 2021, a new production building specifically for processing, curing, and packaging their product.

There are now six flavours, and plans to expand into some pretty

special new products.

Dan says, “If you try our apple pie flavour, and you cook it in the oven, you’ll swear there’s a real apple pie in there.” The Maple Bourbon is a great flavour combination, too.

It’s important to both Dan and Shelly that they incorporate local ingredients into their product.

Wearing an orange vest makes you stand out in the trees - but not to a deer Hunters and non-hunters alike are familiar with bright orange coats, hats, vests, and other gear that is worn during hunting season.

Even though it seems counterintuitive to wear “blaze orange” in the fields or woods for fear that animals may spot you, hunters need not worry so much.

Deer typically cannot recognize blaze orange attire designed to make hunters visible to other people.

According to researchers, a combination of factors make deer less likely to be startled by blaze orange.

Deer have less binocular overlap than humans. Binocular overlap (the area that both eyes view at the same time) al-

lows focus on a single point and enables depth perception.

Deer must shift their heads much more than humans to gain a good threedimensional perspective of an object.

Deer also have fewer cones in their retinas compared to humans. Cones are photoreceptors that enable colour vision and distinguish fine details.

Furthermore, deer cannot readily perceive longer wavelengths of colour, so oranges and reds appear more like brown or gray to them.

However, deer can see blue colors more easily, so hunters may want to avoid blue jeans paired with their orange gear.

Alberta forestry companies plant 100 million trees Leslie Cholowsky The Community Press Alberta’s forest companies planted over 100 million trees in the province’s forests.

They say that figure works out to planting three trees for every one tree harvested. It also works out to 23 trees for every single Albertan, and 100,000 trees for every grizzly bear in the province.

The Alberta Forest Products Association (AFPA) says that tree species that are native to Alberta typically have a 150-year lifespan. They say without human involvement, historical fire patterns show that most trees and forests wouldn’t reach that maximum lifespan, that on average, Alberta forests would

burn every century to half-century.

“The province has significantly more mature forests as a result of sustainable forest management practices, including measures to limit the spread of wildfire.”

Alberta Ministers of Agriculture and Forestry, Devin Dreeshen says, “As the third largest resource sector in Alberta, forestry is central to our economic life and well-

being. By planting over 100 million trees in one season, Alberta’s forest companies are maintaining our proud status as world leaders in responsible forest management while increasing our competitive advantage and laying the foundations for job creation and generations of prosperity.”

Alberta forestry companies make detailed 200-year plans before harvesting is done.

These plans are reevalu-

ated every 10 years.

They also partner with researchers to apply science-based ‘best practices’ in forest management.

Once planted, new forests are tended for at least 14 years, and these companies actively support research projects on forest ecosystems and

wildlife, the AFPA says.

AFPA President Jason Krips says, “Our members take sustainability very seriously and are strongly committed to giving back more than we take to ensure the health of Alberta’s forests for now and for future generations.

“We don’t look at our forests as just an economic benefit, but rather as a resource with crucial environmental, social, and cultural benefits.”

Understanding energy use aides in cost management Leslie Cholowsky The Community Press

With inflation predicted to rise, and a forecast for natural gas prices increasing, as well as a rising carbon tax, it’s well worth the investment of time to see if improvements can be made to agricultural energy use.

Adopting energy management means looking at the energy used on the farm to understand use patterns, make choices about equipment selection, decide on appropriate energy sources or providers, and to ensure an energy system meets the demands needed for a particular operation.

One way to isolate energy usage information is to have submetres installed. These metres are installed downstream from the main utility metre, and can be used to identify energy use of a particular area or building.

The information from the submetre can help identify when peak usnea occurs, as well as identifying what activities or equipment use the most energy.

Sometimes just seeing a pattern is enough to motivate users to change small things that can reap energy savings.

When a farm has been in operation for a long time, it is possible that new options could improve the existing process and reduce the energy footprints.

Experts say there’s value in a regular review of equipment and operations to determine what makes the most sense going forward.

Another tool that can offer serious savings is to have an energy assessment, which will provide a more thorough opportunity to weigh the cost of new equipment over the energy cost that can be recouped.

Energy efficiency is doing the same thing but with less energy. Similar to energy conservation, it leads to less waste in your energy system.

One obvious solution is to replace older powered equipment with higher energy rated equipment at the end of its useful life cycle, or sooner, if the level of efficiency warrants it.

Proper maintenance to keep equipment running at maximum efficiency can also result in energy savings, so adopting a formal maintenance schedule should be part of your energy management plan.

There may be ways you can adjust your activities to see if any steps could be

eliminated or combined for an energy savings.

Some important areas to consider for energy savings include lighting, insulation, heating, refrigeration, ventilation, waterers, controllers, grain dryers, and combined heat and power needs and use.

Costs have dropped on small-scale renewable energy systems, and these can be used to power specific areas of the farm for big energy savings.

There are smaller projects that can result in savings that are as simple as changing to LED lighting, outside and in.

New innovations in LED

Even switching from fluorescent to LED tubes can result in savings, as can switching all light bulbs to LED. There have also been innovations and improvements in heating fixtures that can result in a huge jump in the efficiency of a system, resulting in less energy use for the same results.

It’s worth you while to take a look at the energy use on your farm and see where savings could be made, whether it’s small scale like replacing light fixtures, or on a larger scale.

Minister’s message for 2021 hunting season Jason Nixon AB Minister of Environment and Parks It’s easy to understand why hunting continues to be such a popular pastime here in Alberta. Our province’s diverse landscape and wildlife populations offer a memorable hunting experience that can be enjoyed with family and friends.

Alberta’s hunting heritage is rich and deeply engrained in our province.

Hunting allows us to connect meaningfully with nature and enjoy the outdoors, and provides a healthy, sustainable source of food.

Game meat is a great source of lean, organic protein and can be a nice menu change for a family dinner.

Sharing such a meal also provides an occasion for memories of the hunting experience to be shared and enjoyed again.

I am pleased to acknowledge that the number of female hunters in Alberta has increased by 72 per cent in the last five years – nearly 10,000 new female hunters have been welcomed to the sport.

This reflects the success of the entire hunting community in Alberta by driving inclusive participation in great outdoor experiences.

As the minister responsible for fish and wildlife, my focus is to ensure Alberta is home to sustainable populations of game species so we can continue to offer memorable hunting experiences, while encouraging

our young people to participate in conservation.

This requires striking the right balance between providing additional hunting opportunities, where sustainable, while implementing improved conservation measures. Doing this will ensure future generations are able to enjoy the same great hunting experience that we all enjoy today.

For new hunters, draw wait times for some special licences can be lengthy. I encourage new hunters and all experienced hunters to take advantage of the many general tag opportunities available.

This will help achieve harvest goals established to support sustainable populations while minimizing wildlife conflicts with agricultural producers, improve public safety on our roadways and address game population impacts of wildlife disease.

The COVID-19 pandemic has led many Albertans to discover or re-discover a variety of outdoor recreation activities, including hunting.

Last year saw an increase in hunting licence sales and I expect 2021 will be another strong year for hunting participation in Alberta.

Hunting is an activity that can be enjoyed safely while following all public health guidelines to help protect yourself and others against the spread of COVID-19. The latest updates and guidelines can be found at alberta.ca/ coronavirus-info-foralbertans.aspx.

Rising interest in naturally occurring humalite for crop benefits Leslie Cholowsky The Community Press

Westmoreland Mining put out a release this week that touts the benefits of naturally occurring humalite, which the company is extracting from a large deposit located near Hanna.

“Containing organic matter and high concentrations of humic acid, humalite is now drawing attention from both growers and academics, and for good reason,” the company says.

Humalite is growing in popularity, and there are presently a number of studies by farmer-led research groups: Battle River Research Group (BRRG) in Forestburg, Chinook Applied Research Association in Oyen, and Gateway Research Organization in Westock, who are partnering with Dr. Linda Gorim and her team.

They are studying the effects of humalite on wheat and canola production in Alberta.

Dr. Khalil Ahmed of BRRG says, “These three research groups are strategically located in different agroclimatic and soil zones of the province.”

Ahmed says this project will generate critical information for producers which includes data about the use and adaptability of humalite according to their soil and climatic zones.

He says, “New information will include selecting the proper humalite application for each zone, the effects of different humalite and nitrogen rates on soil properties (soil pH), N rates and soil health. At the end, producers will be able to make informed decisions about humalite usage in their farming operations.”

“Part of humalite’s appeal is that it’s natural, rather than something

you bring in from the outside or genetically modify,” says Dr. Linda Gorim. Gorim is an assistant professor/Western Grains Research Foundation (WGRF) chair in cropping systems, Department of Agricultural, Food and Nutritional Sciences at the University of Alberta (U of A).

“We are especially fortunate in Alberta to have one of the highest valued humalite deposits in the world, as it consists of up to 70 per cent humic acid.”

She adds, “Local farmers have already started buying humalite and putting it on their fields, and I’ve heard from some that say it cuts down on fertilizer use.

“This study will apply different humalite and fertilizer rates, looking at how humalite affects crop performance, the interaction of humalite and soil, and the optimal humalite rates per acre for growers.”

In light of the devastating drought across the Prairies this year, humalite’s ability to hold moisture is also a key aspect of the study.

“If we had been applying this substance to the soil in 2021, it would have helped maintain moisture and allowed plants to grow in spite of drought conditions,” says Dr. Thilakarathna, an assistant professor in plantmicrobial interactions in Dr. Gorim’s department at the U of A. “Those crops would still have suffered drought stress, but humalite could have worked to minimize the damage.”

Though scientists have yet to analyze any data, Dr. Thilakarathna observed the first trial this summer under dry conditions. He noticed that wheat plots where humalite was applied contained less stressed plants that stood much better

than their counterparts in the non-humalite plots.

BRRG’s Dr. Ahmed adds, “We are very thankful to Results Driven Agriculture Research and Westmoreland Mining for funding this project.”

One farmer in Sturgeon County, Dan Majeau, says he’s already seen some very positive results from humalite application.

Healthy substitutions for baking and cooking this fall season An ability to adapt is one of the most important skills to have in the kitchen. Following a recipe can give home cooks the cursory knowledge they need to make a delicious meal, but an ability to tweak recipes allows individuals to put their own spin on foods and customize meals so they fit with their particular lifestyles.

A person may have to change an ingredient to avoid a food allergy, or he or she may swap something out to make a dish more nutritious. Some substitutions can change the texture or even taste of the overall recipe, as no substitution can mimic the original ingredient exactly. However, a home cook will often find the results are acceptable, and may even prefer them to the “real” thing.

Here are some common substitutions to try.

Original ingredient: White flour Substitution: Whole wheat flour, nut flour White flour lacks many nutrients because the grain has been largely stripped of its most important parts before being ground. Whole wheat flour has extra fibre that aids in digestion and can lower risk for certain diseases. Those with a gluten intolerance can use nut flours, like almond flour.

Whole wheat flour and nut flours are denser than white flour, so you may need to experiment with 3⁄4 cup to 1 cup of white flour ratios in recipes.

Original ingredient: Sugar Substitution: Applesauce Sugar is the foundation of

many baked goods, but too much sugar provides empty calories and can contribute to various illnesses if eaten in large quantities.

Swapping one cup of unsweetened applesauce for one cup of sugar can provide sweetness with more health benefits, such as added fibre and vitamins.

Original ingredient: Oil or butter Substitution: Fruit or vegetable puree Try adding pureed carrot, banana, pumpkin, or apples to recipes to boost moisture.

These ingredients also add extra flavour and nutrients.

The ratio is generally oneto-one for the replacement.

However, cooks may want to experiment to find the best ratio for their recipes.

Original ingredient: Buttermilk Substitution: Milk and lemon juice If you don’t have buttermilk on hand or if you feel that it is too high in calories, mix enough milk (low fat if desired) with enough lemon juice or light vinegar to reach 1 cup.

Original ingredient:

Water Substitution: Stock Make a batch of vitaminand nutrient-rich vegetable stock to use with foods that are boiled, such as pastas and rices. The stock will add flavour and nutrition.

Original ingredient: Egg Substitution: Vinegar, baking powder and liquid (baking) or egg substitute (cooking) When baking, 1⁄2 teaspoon of baking powder plus 1 tablespoon vinegar plus 1 tablespoon of a liquid can replace an egg in the recipe if you’re avoiding

eggs.

Original ingredient: Sour cream Substitution: Plain Greek yogurt Greek yogurt, with its natural helpful probiotic bacteria, can be a healthy substitution for sour cream in dips, dressings and other recipes that call for sour cream or even mayonnaise.

Food substitutions can help people customize recipes to fit their dietary needs. People can experiment with various ingredients to develop delicious meals.

“There was a deterioration in pH levels and growing acidity, and we knew something had to be done.

“We applied 100 lbs. of humalite to our fields every year for three years.

“In reviewing soil samples from before and after, we saw pH levels returning to normal following humalite application and an overall improvement in soil health.”

For Majeau’s crops, those benefits were just the beginning. He found that humalite helped release nutrients, im-

proved soil aeration and increased microbial activity, which is another component of healthy soil.

“Humalite accelerates crop residue breakdown and increases water retention, as it holds ten times its weight in water,” explains Majeau.

“We apply it in granular and liquid form, and have seen better germination and emergence in both cases.”

Majeau says, “I’m encouraged by other study results that are already published, and even more so by our ability to cut nitrogen use by 10 to 20 per cent.

“There is no one magic bullet that addresses all of our needs, so it’s about putting the right pieces together, and humalite is a big piece of the puzzle.”

Nathan Sereda Newo Global Energy Making energy improvements to your home can save you money, make your home more comfortable, and reduce your impact on the planet, but the upfront investment can sometimes seem prohibitive. That’s where the Greener Homes Grant comes in.

Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) has developed a program that allows eligible homeowners to access funding up to $5,600 to upgrade their

homes and reduce their energy footprint. The program is very simple to take part in, with just a few steps to keep in mind.

First, homeowners need to register with the Greener Homes program and provide all necessary identification documents. This includes proof of residence and ownership. (Funding is only available for older homes; newly built structures are not included.)

Second, an EnerGuide evaluation will need to be carried out by a certified evaluator (visit www.nrcan.gc.ca for a list

of service providers near you). The evaluator will conduct an energy audit of your home and identify areas of improvement.

Based on this list, different amounts of funding are available for various upgrades. Eligible retrofit categories include insulation, air-sealing, windows and doors, thermostats, water heaters, renewable energy (e.g. solar), and energy resiliency.

Once a list of recommended improvements has been consulted and the selected ones chosen, it is time to install the up-

grades.

Any mechanical or electrical work must be done by a licenced and trained professional. All receipts and records will be submitted to NRCan by your evaluator, however homeowners need to keep copies until March 31, 2028. (Any retrofits or EnerGuide evaluations that you may have completed before Dec. 1, 2020, are not eligible for reimbursement.)

Following completion of your retrofits (which could reduce your energy usage and greenhouse gas emissions by over 50 per cent),

it is time to have a postretrofit evaluation of your home.

With this you will receive an EnerGuide rating and label for your home. An EnerGuide label is an officially recognized record of

your home’s energy performance, which can be a useful document when considering selling your home.

Favourable commodity price and interest rates

Strong commodity prices combined with low interest rates continue to sustain farmland value increases in most parts of Canada, according to a mid-year review by Farm Credit Canada.

“While the drought across most of Western Canada and the pandemic have captured most of the headlines, strong commodity prices and low interest rates have been quietly supporting a vibrant farmland market for the first six months of 2021,” said J.P. Gervais, FCC’s chief economist.

“Higher-than-normal prices for wheat, canola and corn have improved the profitability of many operations in the second half of 2020 and early 2021, putting them in a better position to invest in farmland as the opportunities arise.”

Average farmland values in Canada are once again showing steady increases for the first half of 2021, although the full impact of widespread drought this summer has yet to be weighed.

The average value of Canadian farmland increased by 3.8 per cent for the first half of this year, compared to an average increase of 3.7 per cent for the same time last year.

This increase is in line with mid-year results over the past six years, which showed singledigit increases for the full year.

In general, Prairie and Atlantic provinces reported the most modest increases, while Ontario, British Columbia and Quebec had the largest increases.

Buyers from different sectors are competing for the limited amount of land on the market.

Interest rates declined at the outset of the pandemic and remain historically low, which is also

supporting the demand for farmland and weakening the supply of available land for sale in the market.

“While many crop producers have benefited from the high commodity prices and have been able to take advantage of low interest rates to buy land, not everyone is in the same boat,” Gervais said.

“The outlook for revenues is murkier for 2021 and 2022 given exceptional production challenges in parts of the country.”

Livestock producers, for example, have seen their cost of production increase and profits shrink as a result of the drought.

“The overall economic environment of the next 12 months bears watching. The possibility of higher interest rates, inflationary pressures and the demand for ag commodities could influence the demand for farmland,” Gervais said.

He recommends farm operators continue to exercise caution, especially in regions where the rate of farmland values growth significantly exceeded that of farm income in recent years.

He also recommends

operators maintain a risk management plan to protect their business from unpredictable circumstances.

Two popular new ways to cook turkey picking up steam Thanksgiving is a beloved holiday and is fast approaching again on the long weekend of October 11.

Families may have their own unique Thanksgiving traditions, but one staple of this kickoff to the holiday season is bound to make its way to Thanksgiving dinner tables no matter how unusual families' holiday celebrations may be: turkey.

Much effort goes into picking and preparing a Thanksgiving turkey. Depending on the size of the bird, turkeys can take many hours to cook. Thanksgiving celebrants are no doubt familiar with ovenroasted turkey, which is the most traditional way to cook turkey. But this year hosts who want to expand their horizons and think beyond the oven can consider two popular alternative methods to cooking a Thanksgiving turkey.

1. Deep frying Deep frying is a popular way to prepare foods at outdoor events. For example, stroll through the parking lot on game day and you're liable to find football fans deep frying their favorite foods at their tailgate parties. Turkey can be deep fried and this method makes for an ideal option for hosts who want to enjoy the great outdoors while welcoming friends and loved ones to their homes. Deep frying imparts a juicy flavor that can be hard to replicate when roasting a turkey.

Deep frying is a much faster way to cook a turkey than cooking it in the oven. However, deep frying also can be more dangerous, so it's imperative that cooks remain attentive when setting up the fryer and while the turkey is frying.

Where to deep fry the turkey also bears consideration. The turkey experts at Butterball® recommend deep frying the turkey outside on a flat surface that's far away from structures, including your home, garage, deck, etc.

The time required to deep fry a turkey will depend on the size of the bird, but experts note that it typically takes about 3 to 3.5 minutes per pound. Electric fryers may take significantly less time and they typically require less oil, so this is another option to consider.

Many experts note that it's best to deep fry turkeys that are 15 lbs. or less, as the turkey will need to be completely submerged in oil when frying. In addition, turkeys larger than 15 lbs. may cook unevenly, which can affect flavor.

2. Smoking Smoking has grown in popularity in recent years as grills that make this method possible have become more affordable. Smoking is a "low and slow" method of cooking, so this option is ideal for people who intend to be home all day on Thanksgiving and want to infuse their birds with a smoky flavor. However, even

busy hosts can still consider smoking, as electric smokers now allow cooks to remotely control the temperatures in their grills. That's important, as smoking requires cooks to periodically check the temperature on their grills to ensure it has not dropped too low or risen too high.

Smoking a turkey typically requires maintaining a temperature between 225 and 250 F. Cooking times for smoked turkeys are typically around 30 minutes per pound, though it can take longer if the temperature is lower. Because of the extended cooking time, hosts may want to pick a turkey that weighs around 15 lbs., especially if they don't have much experience smoking.

This Thanksgiving, hosts can try something new by deep frying or smoking their turkeys.

How do you know if you need new tires?

Though vehicles can't function without them, tires are something few drivers think about until something goes wrong.

A roadside flat tire or a tire rotation recommendation from a mechanic during a routine oil change appointment may be the only time many drivers give much thought to their tires.

The automotive resource Kelley Blue Book notes that the life expectancy of most tires falls between 35,000 and 60,000 km.

That's a big gap, and car owners can check their vehicle manuals to see if their vehicle manufacturer recommends a more specific replacement interval.

It's worth noting that mileage is not the only barometre drivers should use to determine if they need to buy new tires. The following tips can help drivers determine if now is the time to outfit their vehicle with new tires.

• Measure the tread. KBB notes that a tire assessment should always include measuring the amount of remaining tread. Drivers can do this on their own in various ways. One method involves looking at the tread wear bars, which are little bridges in the grooves between the ridges. If the bars are even with the tread pattern, then the tire has very little tread remaining and must be replaced. The penny or quarter test is a popular way to determine if tires must be replaced. In-

sert a penny or quarter into the centre of the tread between two ridges with Lincoln's or Washington's head facing you. If you can see the very top of the head or the space above the head, the tire must be replaced. If only a little bit of hair is visible, then the tire is nearing its end. The tire has sufficient remaining tread if the some of the forehead is concealed.

• Check for other signs of wear and tear. Little remaining tread is not the only sign tires must be replaced. Tires with cracked sidewalls, discolouration and/or bulging need to be replaced.

• Confirm a larger issue isn't lurking. Uneven wear on tires is typically a byproduct of a larger issue.

Though tires that have worn unevenly will need to be replaced, replacing them without correcting the larger issue will only lead to more uneven wear on the new tires. That's a costly mistake. KBB notes that poor wheel alignment or suspension issues are typically to blame for uneven wear. This issue can be fixed and should be addressed prior to purchasing a new set of tires.

Tires sometimes exhibit telltale signs that they need to be replaced.

Before buying replacement tires, drivers can inspect their existing ones and ask their mechanic to confirm that a larger issue isn't affecting their performance.

The spice mix, made by a local entrepreneur, 1908 Barbecue, now mixes a custom blend just for them. The maple syrup comes from Quebec; “Even our pellets for the smoker are bought locally.”

Not only do they buy locally, but they support local business by branching out to consignment sales locally, too. “We love supporting local businesses just like our own. We’ve talked about growth with our local retailers, and we think we have some very promising future plans.”

Their slogan is, “Made in Alberta for Albertans.”

Crafted program that helps local entrepreneurs by helping to increase their exposure, help them develop and build their customer base, and connect them with any resources they need.

Flagstaff Crafted tries to enhance that support through strong story telling, and have provided the Skobergs with the opportunity to tell their story.

They were recently one of several featured sellers in a Pop-Up market at selected Wild Rose Co-op locations in Flagstaff County.

Skoberg says he’s approached other retail outlets to carry the product, and has found that they’ve already looked at the Flagstaff Crafted and Twin Oak Farms before he enters the initial meeting. Both Skobergs like the focus of the Flagstaff Crafted program, which is on the story, not just the product. Dan says that’s what really connects with the customers.

It’s not just about making the product, it’s also promoting the product, often in person, that builds the business. Skobergs say, “It’s another thing 4-H made easier. We feel comfortable

talking to perfect strangers about our story, and engaging them in our product.”

Right now the business is curing 100 pounds a day, smoking 100 pounds a day, and slicing 100 pounds a day, Dan says. “That’s soon to be 200 pounds.” The pork bellies are cured for eight days, then smoked for three hours. They even hired their first employee to work on the production line, and are looking for a second.

They retail in 14 locations, as well as selling directly from their own website.

Skobergs deliver the frozen packages of product to retailers presently in a number of locations in Flagstaff and in Beaver County too, but also sell directly from their website: twinoakfarmsbacon.com Skobergs say their recent participation in the pop-up market was extraordinary.

“We had no idea what the response would be.” They soon found out. The pop up markets run for four days, Wednesday to Saturday. Skobergs ran out of product by noon the first day, and brought double the next day, also selling

out.

Skoberg said he was proud to promote not only a local product, using local ingredients, but also a healthy product, “The salt content alone was enough to convince many people to try it.”

Dan’s working on a new, very innovative product he’s currently keeping

under wraps as he works out the process.

They are also contemplating new flavours, saying that the present six flavours all sell fairly evenly. “We’ve tried some new flavours in house that we haven’t introduced yet.”

They’re also already planning to expand the

bacon barn, adding more coolers, and a potential addition/extension, to keep up with the demand for their product.

Why would an already busy family take on something like this? “Why not?” was their response, right in line with their philosophy: “We are a family that enjoys being busy.

A universal problem: how to spot signs of cyberbullying Despite its relative infancy, the internet has become so prevalent in daily life that it’s hard to imagine a time when it wasn’t so widely available.

Yet that time wasn’t so long ago. In fact, many adults who are now entering or in middle-age made it through their secondary educations without the internet. That’s not so for today’s students, and that divide can sometimes make it difficult for parents to spot signs that their children are victims of cyberbullying.

Cyberbullying refers to the use of electronic communication to bully a person, typically by sending intimidating and/or threatening messages.

These messages may be sent in various ways, including through apps or via social media platforms. According to StopBullying.gov research has shown that a quick and consistent response to bullying is an effective way to convey that such behaviour is unacceptable. But parents first must learn to recognize signs of cyberbullying, which is not always as easy to spot as other bullying behaviors.

The Anti-Defamation League notes that hateful words and rumors are often a component of cyberbullying. In such instances, that abuse can follow young people home, giving them the idea that the bullying is inescapable.

In decades past, bullying victims could at least see their homes as safe havens. That’s no longer the case, which is why it’s vital that parents learn to recognize the signs of cyberbullying.

Young people may exhibit their own unique symptoms if

they’re being victimized by cyberbullies. In addition, the ADL notes that parents can look for these signs and then take immediate action if they suspect their children are being cyberbullied.

• A child becomes upset, sad, or angry during or after being online or using their phone.

• A child withdraws from family or friends.

• A child expresses reluctance or refuses to participate in activities previously enjoyed.

• A child has an unexplained decline in grades.

• A child refuses to

go to school or expresses anger or dissatisfaction with a specific class or school in general.

• A child increasingly reports symptoms of illness for which he or she wants to stay at home.

• A child shows signs of depression or sadness.

The ADL urges parents who see any of these signs to respond to them immediately.

Take a gentle, supportive tone during any discussions with children, making sure to express your concerns while also listening to the child when he or she

explains what is so upsetting.

Parents who have confirmed or suspect their child is a victim of

cyberbullying should contact their children’s school immediately.
