Grade 3 students learn from Indigenous Culture Presentation Moush John Tofield Mercury

CW Sears’ Grade 3 teacher, Laurie Couves helped her students learn more about Indigenous culture with a virtual presentation by the Souris Valley Museum.

According to Couves,

the students really enjoyed learning many interesting facts.

“I learned how they hunt using a rock, shaped into a spearhead” said one of the students.

Held on Friday, Oct. 8, the presentation was geared towards enlightening the students about Indigenous culture.

“It was interesting that it takes up to 10 buffalo hides to cover the tipis and that putting up the tipis was a woman’s job!” observed another student.

“I didn’t know that they used the horns from animals to make horns they can blow into, to warn others of danger,” added another student.

He bagged 755 votes, compared to Zsuzsanna Hemperger’s 736, and Brett Huculak’s 677 to be elected.

in the schools in Beaver County and across the division.

“I feel privileged to be able to carry on in this position and to be the voice of the families and students in all of the schools in this ward.”

Albrecht who was representing the east part of Beaver County (with Zsuzsanna Hemperger representing the west) in the previous term will now be in charge of the entire area, as the school division merged east and west because of declining student numbers.

This resulted in only one position this term.

“There will be many bumps in the road as far as operation of schools until we reach the end of this pandemic, but we must look at the goals by trying to give all students the best opportunities for learning in a safe and caring environment.”

According to Albrecht, the strain on everyone has really brought the issue of mental health to the forefront.

“We must continue to ensure we are there to support whomever needs it,” he stated.

Council Corner New Tofield Council looks forward to continuing town’s betterment October brings a change to weather, Thanksgiving blessings, and a close to the current four-year term for Mayor and Council.

At the beginning of this term, not one of us could have envisioned the struggles that we as a community, business owners, first responders or as elected officials would face. The pandemic has affected each of us differently, but ultimately has challenged us in our everyday existence.

Once again, we hope that these current struggles and challenges are short lived, and that we will come out stronger on the other side. It is our belief that Tofield has risen to each challenge and shown the moral fiber of our beloved community.

Although there have been challenges, we must also recognize the

accomplishments from a governance perspective and acknowledge the additions to the community that Council has advocated for. One such addition that is near completion is the walking trail extension to the west-end businesses. This busy stretch of road will now see people on foot, bike, mobility scooter etc. being able to access these services without the fear of unsafe passage.

As the next term is drawing near, we will see four of us returning to serve the community. The four returning members will be: Councillor Harold Conquest,

Councillor Brenda Chehade, Councillor Larry Tiedemann, and Mayor Debora Dueck. At this time, we wish to acknowledge the efforts, dedication and service of Councillor Cathy Brown. Cathy, thank you for your service to Tofield. We each wish you well on your future endeavours, and look forward to interacting with you in the community.

The next term will also see the addition of a new Council member, Norm Martineau. Norm, Mayor and Council look forward to your views, input, and service to Tofield over the next four years.

Loose Ends: Eleven Minutes

A Russian actor and a film director just spent 12 days on the International Space Station, on a mission to film the world’s first movie in

orbit. Meanwhile, 90year old William Shatner’s eleven minutes in space were postponed until high winds abated.

As Captain James Kirk of the Starship Enterprise he wouldn’t have allowed a mere wind to prevent him from boldly going wherever he intended, but that was fiction and Shatner’s trip is in real life.

And Kirk would never have admitted to ‘feeling comfortable but also uncomfortable’ about his pending voyage.

I’m not sure how deep into space he’ll go but doubt he’ll experience warp speed or get beamed anywhere.

Scotty won’t be aboard, having passed away in 2005.

I heard somewhere that Tom Cruise is scheduled to do some space-shipping too; maybe he already has. I can’t keep up with these stars with their heads above the clouds. I wonder (with tongue in cheek) if any of them have researched the ef-

fects of space travel on boob jobs, face lifts and Botox? What happens if they come back down to Earth looking like dried apple puppets? Or worse, like their real selves? Oh, the horror!

Shatner will only be touring the final frontier for eleven minutes so will probably return to good old Mother Earth in the same size, shape and health as when he left it. What could shift or collapse in eleven minutes? Nothing important. His wig, if he

wears one, might lift off in weightless conditions, if those exist on the trip.

He might be wise to take along some duct tape, just in case.

I honestly admire William Shatner for wanting to do something that he admits makes him a bit uncomfortable. Most men his age aren’t still looking for ways to keep life interesting. I bet he doesn’t even have a recliner, preferring to watch Star Trek reruns from a straight back chair. If

The Tofield RCMP responded to 35 occurrences from Oct. 11 to 17, 2021 (inclusive). Also included in these calls for service were eleven traffic complaints/tickets, seven suspicious person/vehicle complaints, three wellbeing checks, one 911 complaints/false alarms, two motor vehicle collisions and traffic enforcement provided by the K Division Traffic Unit.

On Oct. 11, Tofield RCMP responded to a residential break and enter in Holden. RCMP arrived on scene and were able to confirm that the person responsible was a family member, although this person was no longer welcome at the

residence. RCMP located the person responsible and provided warning of continued behaviour.

On Oct. 11, Tofield RCMP responded to a domestic disturbance in Tofield. RCMP arrived and spoke to all parties involved and found that a verbal argument began between family members although no criminal offence occurred and all parties were separated without further incident.

On Oct. 12, Tofield RCMP responded to a complaint of an unruly passenger on a Via Rail train passenger car travelling through Tofield.

RCMP attended and were able to safely remove the passenger without further incident or issue.

On Oct. 14, Tofield

RCMP responded to a fraud complaint in Tofield. RCMP were advised that a stolen debit card was fraudulently used at a local business establishment. RCMP attended and obtained evidence of the offence.

This file is still under investigation.

On Oct. 14, Tofield RCMP responded to a commercial break-andenter in Beaver County.

RCMP attended and found that entry was gained to the property through a fence and once inside, suspect(s) stole various automotive parts. This file is still under investigation.

On Oct. 14, Tofield RCMP responded to an uttering threats complaint in Tofield. RCMP spoke to the complainant who advised that a

known individual has been harassing and threatening a member of their family. This file is still under investigation.

On Oct. 15, Tofield RCMP responded to an uttering threats complaint in Tofield. RCMP spoke to the complainant who advised that a known individual has been harassing and threatening their family.

Alberta judge’s antifree speech ruling must be challenged DON HUTCHINSON Guest Columnist

Politically determined public health guidelines during the covid-19 pandemic have come with a cost.

Governments have defined essential and non-essential services, ostensibly to ensure Canadians have access to food. Not all can afford essential services food – that’s a story for another day – so food banks have remained open alongside grocery sellers. Several nonessential businesses closed because of COVID constraints.

Others are on the verge of joining them as interim government supports expire.

Governments determined how many could gather, where, at what distance from one another, and most recently whether a vaccine passport is needed to enter. The long-assured as “nonmandatory” vaccine is ever more required, making use of progressively coercive

measures directed toward those who wish to dine at a struggling restaurant, travel by air or rail, or satisfy managers of worthiness for continuing employment.

Whether in government, health care, emergency services, or private sector, it’s jabs for jobs. ‘Fully vaccinated’ is already being supplemented by booster shots.

The above actions caused varying degrees of infringement on Canadians’ human rights. Government actions, largely based on guidance from advisory ‘science tables,’ have arguably been “reasonable limits prescribed by law as can be demonstrably justified in a free and democratic society,” as section 1 of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms expresses it.

Churches have, for the most part, been treated as comparable to businesses where people gather who are

not employed there.

Hand sanitizer, masks, social distancing, and capacity limits have been broadly, but not universally, accepted.

But in a culture that claims to value diversity and to guarantee freedom of expression, what is the cost to the individual or institution that voices a different message from that of government?

Calgary pastor Artur Pawlowski has a propensity to dissent from government regulation in his efforts to share the Gospel. In the past,

despite notice from government authorities, he repeatedly used sound amplification equipment on city streets without a permit and failed to adhere to food preparation regulations when providing meals for the impoverished. On October 13, Pawlowski was sentenced for acts of civil disobedience which a judge had determined in June violated public health guidelines as also outlined in an earlier Alberta court order.

In Canada, those who engage in civil disobedience must be

prepared for potential consequences delineated by governing authorities when those authorities implement measures prescribed by law.

Bible passages oft-referenced by Christians who support or engage in law challenging acts reinforce that reality.

A more recent historical example is the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., who knew the potential consequences of marching for civil rights in the 1960s U.S. King did not resist when arrested and was peaceably

taken to prison. While behind bars, he penned the inspirational Letter from Birmingham Jail, giving written voice to his Biblically informed peaceful assembly style of protest against unjust laws.

Pastor Pawlowski had to know he would potentially be subject to penalty for his actions in protest of laws he considers unjust. Imprisonment or probation, a requirement to adhere to public health guidelines during the period of probation, Continued on Page 7

The price of dissent in Canada’s free and democratic society cannot be the impairment of free thought, belief, opinion and expression.

Dissent, in fact, is a hallmark of a free and democratic society.

Dissenting actions may bring consequences. But nonhateful dissenting opinions and words must be accepted even by those who disagree with them.

Neither government nor the courts should

be permitted to command a citizen to utter words to which he or she personally objects. Dissent is the price of living in a free society.

Difference – including in religion, thought, belief, opinion, and expression – is the cost, and benefit, of living in a diverse society.

Obituary Wilfred Stauffer July 18, 1929 - Oct. 5, 2021 Wilfred Stauffer of Tofield, Alberta was born July 18, 1929 (about 30 minutes before his twin brother Wilbur); he passed on October 5, 2021 at the age of 92 years. They were born at their home in Duchess, Alberta to parents Howard Otterbein Stauffer and Stella (Brubaker) Stauffer and joined an older brother Norman, aged 4. When Wilfred was only 4 years old his mother died giving birth to his sister, Fern. Later on, his father married his stepmother, Mary Holderbein. A half brother Charles was stillborn and was buried in the Mountview Mennonite Church plot near Aldersyde, Alberta. They later adopted a baby girl, they named her Faith and this completed their family.

Wilfred attended school in Duchess, then in Rosemary for a time, then the family moved to the High River area where they lived and farmed until he was about 22 years old. At that time the family moved to the Tofield area where they continued to farm.

In 1967, Wilfred met the love of his life Margaret (Johnston). They met on April 5th, 1967, their first date was April 6th, 1967 and they were married May 5th, 1967.

Once uncle was done farming he started finishing/refinishing hardwood floors. He really enjoyed doing floors as he told us quite often how much he enjoyed this type of work. Uncle and auntie then began managing high rise apartment buildings. They were in Burnaby, BC and Calgary, AB for many years. Uncle was the fix it, maintenance man and auntie did the bookkeeping.

They would usually come to Tofield in the summer with their car and travel trailer. Once uncle and auntie moved back to Tofield their favourite pastime was going to Tilly’s for supper and had their daily coffee date there also.

Wilfred was predeceased by his wife Margaret; his mother and father; stepmother Mary; a second stepmother Barbara; brotherin-law George Boese; sisters Fern and Faith; brother and sister-inlaw Norman and Evelyn Stauffer; and his twin brother Wilbur Stauffer. He has many nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews and great great nieces and nephews.

On November 14th, 2018, Wilfred prayed the sinners prayer with Coleen and Gwen. As soon as he prayed the prayer his eyes opened really wide, he said “WOW!!” and started to cry. He was then asked “you really felt the Lord’s presence?” He said “yes and I’ll never forget this,” he started crying and kind of laughing too. He was so touched! Gwen and Coleen felt it was such an honour and privilege to be part of such a special and holy moment. Wilfred was such a joy to be around. He brought such joy to those all around. He was a very social person. He loved visiting with family and friends.

A private family memorial service will be held at a later date at Salem Mennonite Church, south of Tofield. Memorial donations may be made to the Mennonite Central Committee.

“Now that there is only one trustee for the County I look forward to attending functions at schools in the west end as well when asked to do so,” he added.

“While campaigning I met and talked to many people who were very

receptive to me and I look forward to having the opportunity to work with them and represent them well.

Our club members were busy this summer attending shows and helping in the community.

In June Quentin and Kate Albrecht; and Zane and Rhea Gunderson took part in the Holden Jr. Show. They also went to Summer Synergy in Olds in July.

Carter, Taylor, and Jayden Chomik attended CCYA, which was held at the same time in Olds.

They all had lots of fun, met new people, and

learned a lot.

In August our club was asked to do a BBQ at the Bruce Hotel as part of their car show. It was a great fundraiser for our club.

Thank you to the Bruce Hotel for inviting us.

In September we did some community service by picking rocks at the Bruce Cemetery for their expansion.

We always enjoy helping our community out when we can. We can’t wait for this new year to start and for all the exciting things to come.

It’s October, which means it’s time for our club to start up for another year.

Hopefully this will be a normal year where we can do more fun stuff with our members in person!!

On Sept. 30, we met to decide on when and where to have our weighin. It will be on Oct. 24 at 10 a.m. at the Chomik farm.

Obituary LOUISE DEMERIA 1932 - 2021 Louise Demeria passed away at the age of 89 years at the Tofield Long Term Care Centre on October 9, 2021.

She was predeceased by her husband, Lawrence Demeria (Nov. 17, 2014) and her brother, Robert Mason (Dec. 31, 2014).

She was survived by her three daughters, Joanne, Barbara, and Diane (Bill); 11 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren; as well as many other relatives and friends. She was a second mother to very close friends: Anita (Clint), Tom (Donna), John (Maureen), Marilyn (Patt), and Connie (Russ).

She was a lovely, great lady who enjoyed Tofield and always wanted to share hugs and chocolates. She made her daily rounds all through Tofield, mostly for joking and having fun and making people smile.

A memorial service will be announced on a later date.

Winds of change coming to County after municipal election Patricia Harcourt Although only one seat on Beaver County Council is changing hands after the municipal election on October 18, it means change for the county’s power seat - the reeve’s chair.

Jim Kallal, who represented Division 2, was the reeve for the majority of the four year term.

His leaving means another person will become the reeve, which is chosen during the organizational

meeting for a one-year term.

Councillor Kevin Smook, who represents Division 1 after being elected by acclamation, was a former reeve in a different administration.

After Kallal left Division 2, two candidates vyed for the seat in the election with Lionel Williams beating Zsuzsanna Hemperger.

Division 1’s Smook and Division 5’s Dale Pederson both stayed in office by acclamation.

But there was an election in

Divisions 3 and 4, even though there was no change in representation.

In Division 3, former Deputy Reeve Gene Hrabec was re-elected, beating out Ron Yarham, a local cattle farmer and former reeve.

In Division 4, Barry Bruce was re-elected in a close race against two other challengers. Bruce beat Shawn O’Shea by just three votes (100 - 97), and a former councillor Dale Collison was close behind O’Shea with 91 votes.

The new council’s organizational meeting on Wednesday, October 27 will determine who gets the reeve’s chair, and how political alignments will play out for the first meeting.

Council will also have an orientation session the same day spelling out their duties and responsibilities as councillors.

The meeting will include a review of the contentious corporate review spent on by council just prior to the election.

County switching to countyrun gravel haul program for control and safety Patricia Harcourt Beaver County Council has authorized administration to purchase four used tractor trailer units and four gravel trailers at an auction or dealer to a maximum of $1 million in cost.

Superintendent of Transportation Dan Blackie explained the reasons for the purchases as a way of the county retaining some control over the gravel haul work which was not possible when contracting to outside companies.

“Although the drivers were directed by our gravel checkers for dumping locations, issues such as speed, driving practices, accountability and punctuality were out of our direct control,” he said, in his Oct. 6 report to council.

“Administration would like to enhance consistency, accountability, transparency and safety for county employees and residents by moving from a contractor-based gravel haul contract to. county-run gravel run.”

Once the gravel haul was finished, the trucks and temporary staff could help with construction or hauling gravel to trouble spots, said Blackie, “thus allowing the grader operators who currently often haul for themselves to remain in the grader,” thereby increasing efficient use.

“These staff could haul gravel or clay to the culvert crew who currently has to stop working to go get gravel or clay for themselves,” he said.

The four used trucks and trailers are estimated to cost within $1 million. Blackie asked that administration be given the authority to make the purchases when the best deals arise at an auction or used dealer without having to come back to council for council approval.

Council also had the option of renewing the contract of last year’s contractor, which expires at the end of this year, for another year.

Blackie pointed out that the price for the next year would be at a higher rate.

“But I am requesting that we go a different route,” he said, “in-house rather than a contractor,” which he said would be the safer alternative.

And, “so we’re not locked into these contractors. With the dryer

weather this year, “there was not as many miles needed,” but the contractor had 500 miles to do in the deal made for 2021.

“I see nothing wrong with it,” said Division 5 Councillor Dale Pederson, “I think we should move forward on this recommendation.”

“I think it’s an excellent way to go,” said Division 4 Councillor Barry Bruce. “It puts the county in charge, and we can target the project.”

Deputy Reeve Gene Hrabec (Division 3) wanted to know how not having a gravel quota could affect the county financially, minus the cost for gravel checkers, etc.

“This would eliminate that,” he said, “we could gravel yearround.” He suggested the county doing the work would be less expensive than a contractor but the up front costs of the trucks would offset this.

But Blackie said initial costs would diminish over time.

“Then it’s only wages and truck maintenance,” he said, noting the county wouldn’t be “buying all four trucks at once.”

Hrabec responded by saying the idea of supporting local appealed to him by hiring locally. “Keeping money in the community is a good thing,”and would offset not hiring local truckers.

But Blackie also said the decision would have to be one or the other.

“It’s all or none with this,” he said.

With the county doing the work, “it would give us more freedom and safety,” to decide what to do if another bad spring arises, for instance.

“Local employment will resonate with local people,” he said. Blackie said four individuals would be employed for eight months of the year.

“When they are laid off we’ll still have the trucks in the yard,” so in the winter county drivers could stockpile gravel in the Ryley yard.

“So the trucks are utilized all year round.”

County council voted to purchase four used tractor trailer units and four used gravel trailers to a maximum of $1 million.

Added to the approved motion was that the funds for the purchases would come from reserves if the equipment is bought in 2021.

Watch for the shining eyes or silhouette of an animal at night and use high beams when there are no oncoming vehicles.

Slow down if an animal is on or near the road and be prepared to stop. Their behaviour is unpredictable.

If you see one animal, be on the look out for more, since they often travel in groups.

Be particularly careful this time of year, as daylight hours get shorter and animals begin to migrate.

Outgoing Council sets secondary highway priorities for MLA Patricia Harcourt Beaver County Council approved a short list of secondary highway priorities for Alberta Transportation’s consideration at the Oct. 6 regular meeting.

Reeve Jim Kallal (Division 2) received a request from Camrose constituency MLA Jackie Lovely for council’s highest three priorities for work on secondary highways, which run through local municipalities but are the jurisdiction of the province.

“These priorities will be considered

by Alberta Transportation as they prepare their 2022 budget,” stated Dan Blackie, superintendent of county transportation.

The department chose 7.5 miles on S.H. 870 from Hwy. 14 to Hwy. 619; 11

miles on S.H. 857 from Hwy. 14 to Hwy. 26; and 13 miles on S.H. 854 from Hwy. 14 to Twp. Rd. 480 (county border).

Reeve Jim Kallal (Dvision 2) noted that S.H. 834 just east of Tofield was not included on the list, even though it already has pavement.

The 834, “is in dire need,” he said, “of having a shoulder built onto the road plus a lift.” Calling it “a lot of work, Kallal saidf: “It’s “been on the radar” ever since the previous MLA Jessica Littlewood represented the area.

Smook agreed: “I know it’s had some attention recently,” he said, referring to the new interchange built at Hwy. 14 and S.H. 834.

“But it’s an oversize load corridor,” he said, adding “now’s a good time to advocate (for road widening work to be

done) from Hwy. 14 north.”

Smook said that, with the large vessels using that road to access Highway 16 it causes an issue for oncoming traffic on the narrow road.

“When an oversize vessel comes and forces other vehicles over on the side,” he said, adding that infrastructure concerns are also looming as the pavement deteriorates due to the wide loads.

“I think it’s worth at least to tell the MLA,” he said. Blackie concurred, saying he had only been thinking of getting gravel roads to pavement for the list.

Division 5 Councillor Dale Pederson recounted the need to pave S.H. 870, citing the bottleneck for traffic at Viking. Grain and livestock truckers from the northeast of the province

avoid using the 870 because of the road condition and the dust causing a bottleneck at Viking.

“I think it would be viewed favourably as not a huge project,” he said.

However, council passed a motion by Smook to add a friendly amendment to include work on the 834 north from Hwy. 14, once the interchange was completed, “to keep it on the provincial radar.”

Hrabec said it was his understanding that, once the interchange was completed, resurfacing of the 834 going north “would be next.”

The motion also accepted including the three roads suggested by administration to put on the priority list, along with the 834 recommendation.

Lindbrook Estates landowners working with County to conduct water management study The county has been working with affected landowners in Lindbrook Estates since spring 2020 to deal with flooding on the County’s municipal reserve (MR) lot. Wood Environment and Infrastructure Solutions (Wood) was hired by the County in 2020 to survey the lands affected, starting at the direct upstream culvert on the MR, and through the subdivision to find any areas that were affecting the flow of water.

Administration reviewed this report with council in November, and council directed administration to engage the landowner directly downstream of the

County’s MR lot for the purposes of reinstituting a drainage course through their property.

Administration has been working with Wood and legal counsel to design a solution that would allow the reinstallation of a drainage course through the affected property, however the landowner and the county have not been able to come to an agreement on the exact solution or potential costs.

Administration met with Wood and legal counsel in August to try to work through the requests put forward by the landowner, at which time, Wood informed the County that, in order to

design a solution properly, they would need to conduct a study of the entire subdivision and upstream catchment area, in order to identify the anticipated water flows through the affected properties.

Per Wood, this needs to be done to ensure that any work undertaken by the County does not have an adverse effect on landowners downstream of the work.

Wood Environment and Infrastructure Solutions is proposing to start work immediately, in order to have their preliminary work completed by mid November, prior to any snow-

fall. They are also proposing to hold an open house with affected landowners in late November or early December to inform the landowners of the county’s objectives and ensure that all known issues will be taken into consideration.

Council did not agree to proceed with the water management study in Lindbrook Estates.

Councillors believe that there is enough information available to proceed with a solution, and subsequently passed a motion that administration continue to engage with the landowners to find a solution regarding drainage issues in Lindbrook Estates.

Campgrounds Closed for the Season Black Nugget Lake, Camp Lake Campgrounds and online reservations are now closed for the Season.

Firearms Regulation Firearms Regulation Reminder Beaver County Enforcement Services would like to remind citizens of the regulations surrounding use of firearms. These regulations are found in the Alberta Wildlife Act and citizens are urged to review this legislation frequently.

The legislation can be reviewed in full by visiting the Alberta Queens Printer website, clicking the Laws Online/Catalogue tab and then typing Wildlife Act. According to Section 51(1) it is illegal for a person to discharge a firearm from, or cause a projectile from a firearm to pass along or across any roadway. The roadway would also include the ditch portion extending to any private or public land. If there is no identifiable property line (ie. fence) the ditch portion is considered to extend 20 feet from the closest edge of the travelled portion of the roadway.

Additionally, Section 52(1) prohibits discharging of a firearm within 200 yards, or causing a projectile from a firearm to pass within 200 yards of any occupied building. It is also unlawful to discharge any firearm at night, with night being defined as being ½ hour after sunset and ending at ½ hour before sunrise the following day. The current sunrise/sunset table for our area can be found at www.albertaregulations.ca.

Specifically, for the upcoming firearm hunting season, Section 2(1) of the Petty Trespass Act prohibits the entry on any land without the permission of the owner or occupier of the land. If charged and convicted a person may be liable to a fine up to $2000. Landowners are not required to post signage prohibiting trespassing for this charge to be laid. Land that is under cultivation, surrounded by a fence or natural boundary, or that is enclosed in a manner that indicates the owner’s intention to keep persons off the land or animals on the land is by default considered to be private even without signage.

Always ask permission for entry on any land for hunting or any other purposes.

Both campgrounds have seen significant increases in campers in the past few years, this year both campgrounds were exceptionally busy.

No doubt, residents and visitors are catching onto the great experience they can have right here in Beaver County.

Black Nugget Lake, features 90 sites, open May – October. 6 full service sites, 33 powered sites + one powered overflow site, 39 non-serviced sites. We also have 4 nonserviced tent sites, 4 powered group sites (min 3 units per group site, but room for more) and 4 non-serviced group sites (min 3 units per group site, but room for more).

At Black Nugget Lake, it’s been a great year for bird watching, we have had numerous pelicans, and migratory water fowl. Black Nugget Lake is long and winds around the campground, making it perfect for kayaking, canoeing and hiking. Visitors are also enjoying the new site improvements and green spaces. This past fall/spring, new sites were built close to the Lake with room for large RVs, or visit the day use areas, perfect for a day of fishing and picnicking. In the new year visitors will see an upgraded concession, public washrooms and showers. The lake continues to be a popular draw – each year Black Nugget is stocked with rainbow and tiger trout. We encourage you to come out to catch some spectacular sunsets and fish! Find Black Nugget Lake Park 15 minutes east of Tofield, from Hwy 14 turn south on RR 182.

Camp Lake Park, features 73 sites, 20 powered, 41 non-serviced, 5 powered group sites (min of 3 units per group site but room for more) 7 non-serviced group sites (min 3 units per group site but room for more). Camp Lake is open May – September. For reservations call (780) 336-3414 during regular camping season office hours, or book on line beginning March 1, 2022(online only) at https://www.campreservations.ca/.

Camp Lake Park is private with a friendly open atmosphere, a beautiful country setting, and easy accessibility. Camp Lake Park is the perfect place for a peaceful, fun family vacation. Take in some swimming, at one of the two beaches, water skiing, boating, hiking or beach volleyball and much, much more. These are some of the results from Minor Hockey League games held recently.

Tofield U9 hockey team starts its pre-season this Saturday at Tofield Arena with an 11:30 am game against New Sarepta. The following Saturday the U9s play at Bon Accord.

Tofield U9-2 takes on Thorsby on Sunday at 11:45 am at Mike Karbonik Arena, then the following Sunday hosts

New Sarepta at Tofield Arena in pre-season action.

Tofield U11 is 2-1 in the pre-season, winning its last game 23-0 against Maskwacis on Saturday at Tofield Arena. Austin Williams had an 8 pt game (7g 1a). Other scorers were; Aiden Baraniuk (3g 1a), Kale Hart (3g), Kooper Waldo (3g), Zachary Hermann (2g 1a), Reece O’Brien (1g 2a), Austin Dehid (2g), James Conrad (1g 1a), and Manuel Gara (1g).

Evan Ligard got the shutout. The team plays

pre-season until the end of the month.

Tofield has two U13 teams, Tofield-1 is 1-1 in pre-season with Baylee Roberts (2g 1a), Everett Zilkie (2g 1a), and Lane Dehid (1g 2a) leading the team in scoring. Reece Suchy has been between the pipes. Tofield-2 is 0-3 in pre-season led by Matthew Iverson (4g 0a), and Logan Kropp (4a).

Arena on Friday, Sunday and also Oct. 31. Through three contests so far (1-2), Carter Olson leads the team in scoring with 5g 1a, while Ryan Conrad has 3g 2a, and Ayden Bremner, Noah Peterson and Cheyenne Suchy all have four points. Jack Teefy has been in the net for Tofield.

Tofield’s Jacob Bigney is playing goal for the Strathcona AA U15 Warriors this season. In three games he has a 1-1-1 record, a .939 save percentage and a 2.67 GAA. Also on the team is Kay-

lum Roberts who in five games has recorded 3g 4a for 7 pts and is tied for the team’s scoring lead.

On Sunday the team tied GPAC 4-4.

Tofield Landon Van Engelen has picked up a point early this season playing U18 AAA with Fort Saskatchewan of the Alberta Elite Hockey League.

Tofield Wellness Checkstop raise awareness

On Sept. 15 at 8:00 a.m., Tofield/Beaver County West FCSS along with Beaver County ARISE, Rural Mental Health Project, Beaver County Peace Officers, Tofield RCMP, Town of Tofield, Town of Viking, Tofield RCMP, Beaver County, Beaver County Victim Services, Viking/Beaver FCSS, Ryley FCSS and Camrose Family Resource Centre all partnered together to hold a Mental Health and Traffic Safety Check Stop outside of CW Sears School in Tofield. This drive through check-stop was organized by Tofield/Beaver County West FCSS in hopes to spread some wellness and interaction between the public and youth in the early morning hours.

Resource packages were handed out which contained partner information along with mental wellness information, safe driving, and back-to-school safety materials/goodies for the public to take home and share with their families. Some lucky youth and families also received positive tickets from the RCMP while being observed practising bike and road safety and for being great kids.
