Tofield’s Sabrina O’Brien wins national award for top journeyman MOUSH JOHN Editor Tofield’s Sabrina O’Brien was recently honoured with the Alberta Council of Turnaround Industry Maintenance Stakeholders (ACTIMS)’s Women in Trades Journeyman Award.

O’Brien who works for Melloy Industrial Services Inc. as a pipefitter was thrilled and said the honour “felt pretty special.”

“It has been heartwarming to receive this recognition after working so hard,” she said. “It makes me feel like all those years of dedication are eventually paying off! I was surprised to see how many people took the time to reach out and extend their congratulations; this experience has made me realize that more people are in my corner than I originally thought.”

Balancing both work and life, O’Brien said that it’s her discipline, which keeps things in order for her.

“Being very organized and having a fairly strict schedule are probably the two biggest factors to keeping both fronts moving smoothly,” she added. “It definitely isn’t easy being a working mother, like all working moms, we make it work.”

O’Brien expressed her gratitude to all those who have supported her journey so far and said, “I would like to thank my mom and dad for always believing in me even when others thought I couldn’t do it!”

Treated Water Distribution Operator: Progression Position, Entry Level to Level 2 Posting Date: October 1, 2020 Closing Date: October 21, 2020 Job Location: Village of Ryley Description: The Highway 14 Regional Water Services Commission purchases treated water from EPCOR via Strathcona County and distributes it to its member and non-member municipalities throughout the service area. They include Strathcona County, Beaver County, Town of Tofield, Village of Ryley, Village of Holden, Town of Viking and Camrose County. These municipalities rely upon the Highway 14 Commission for the delivery of a safe and reliable supply of treated water. Emphasis is placed on safety for the work group and the public. The successful applicant will be enrolled in the Local Authorities Pension Plan and receive medical, dental and insurance benefits.

Responsibilities: Under the direction of the Operations Director the successful applicant will provide support in all aspects of operating a regional water system.

Requirements will include the collection of routine water samples for bacteriological testing, perform system inspections, pipeline locations, meter installations, meter reading, maintain pump stations, transmission/distribution pipelines and truck fill facilities. The operator will also monitor flows and reservoir levels both on site and remotely through a computer based SCADA management system. The operator will also meet with new customers to take service applications, prepare detailed sketches, perform pipeline locates, coordinate new installations and pipeline repairs with the construction contractor. The operator must reside within close proximity to the water supply system and will be provided with a company vehicle during on call shifts. The successful candidate must be prepared to take “on call” shifts, be mechanically inclined for working with tools and equipment, confident with computers and plan reading, congenial in dealings with co-workers, customers and municipal representatives.

Ashley obtained her Master’s Degree at the U of A and worked for Alberta Health Services, but utmost, she was a devoted wife, mother and daughter. Her family was her life. Ashley you will be forever missed, forever loved

Geza Nemeth of Tofield, AB was born in Hungary on January 28, 1939. He passed away on September 25, 2020 at the age of 81 years.

He is survived by his wife Nadiya; his children Geza Jr., Glenn, and Gerry; as well as numerous grandchildren; extended family Donna Rogne (Pat), and her children Corinne (Rick), Dora, Justin, and Amber; as well as Nadiya's family in the Ukraine: son Svetoslav (Svetlana) and their son Roman, her daughter Maria,

and her sister Maria.

Geza was born in Hungary and at a very young age decided he must leave his home country due to the post war troubles and the revolution happening during that time. He move to Canada when he was only 17 years old, and first landed in Quebec where he worked on the railroad.

Sometime later he moved to Alberta and worked in various jobs including being a machinist on heavy equipment, a janitor, and also worked at the tannery. He was a hard worker, and enjoyed the opportunities that Canada provided him. Even after he had decided to retire at the age of 66, he still enjoyed and kept a part time job to fill his time. He was a faithful member

of the Kalvin Hungarian Presbyterian Church in Edmonton. He also enjoyed his weekly coffee meetings with friends at Tilly's. He was a very beautiful dancer and that is where he met his wife Nadiya. He was a very stubborn Hungarian man who married a very stubborn Ukrainian woman, and they enjoyed their 18 years together.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Thursday, October 8, 2020 at the Tofield Funeral Chapel with Rev. Jozef Paizs officiating.

Cremation has taken place. Memorial donations may be made to the charity of one's choice.

Our oldest grandson, Conor, turned 25 last week. He lives in Calgary and we always drove down to spend the weekend and enjoy the

big bash his parents hosted annually at their acreage near Okotoks, inviting scads of family and friends to eat well and party until all hours.

Small children and dogs were welcome. But with Covid’s arrival the party was shelved so we had to be satisfied with best wishes by phone; it isn’t the same.

Conor has been working through most of the pandemic, one of the lucky ones; his mom worked from home be-

fore the virus so is just carrying on but his stepdad hasn’t been as fortunate. Conor is in his second year apprenticing as an automotive technician – known as mechanics before the computers took over – and if all goes as planned he’ll start the classroom portion sometime this winter. He really likes messing around with car engines, learning enough from his dad and via the internet and books to fix

up three Mustangs – the latest two from 1980 and ’90 - he bought himself.

When the Mustang thing began none of us thought anything would come of it but I guess he sure showed us, hey. I’d much rather he spent hours with his head under the hood of a car than playing video games. Or computer Solitaire like his grandparents. You go, kid.

His other new interest is listening to the oldies on vinyl. His mom gave

him a retro-look turntable (in the olden days we called them record players) and sent us a video of him with a stack of records in front of him as he listened to Ray Price, a nearly or maybe already dead country music icon, with the immediate family on his birthday.

Apparently, he also likes Sinatra and Marty Robbins, just to name a couple, and most of the 80s hits. (Was that when Hootie and the Blowfish

were popular?) The last pleases his parents since that’s the music from their generation – easier listening than be-bop or hip-hop or rap, but then isn’t everything?

Conor’s mom has always said her son has ‘an old soul’ and I think his musical preferences might prove her right.

Oh yes, and he listens to cassette tapes while working in the garage.

Suspicious vehicle and person complaint reported near Ryley School

The Tofield RCMP responded to 30 occurrences from Sept. 28 to Oct. 4, 2020 (inclusive).

Also included in these calls for service was four traffic complaints.

In the morning of Sept.

28, Tofield RCMP received a complaint from a driver that he struck a deer on Hwy. 14. RCMP confirmed no injuries.

Also in the morning of Sept. 28, Tofield RCMP received a complaint from a local business owner who reported that he was the victim of a $10,000 online fraud. This file is still under investi-

gation.

On Sept. 28, Tofield RCMP were dispatched to a suspicious vehicle, which was parked in a rural area outside Tofield.

Tofield RCMP attended and towed a motor vehicle and a motorcycle from the area.

In the afternoon of Sept. 28, Tofield RCMP responded to a suspicious vehicle and person complaint near Ryley School. Tofield RCMP attended and spoke to a number of staff and individuals who described a female who was driving a light coloured SUV who appeared to be taking pictures of people on the school grounds. Thoughts on Thanksgiving Moush John Editor

It is middle of the week and a good time to reflect upon Thanksgiving, as we get ready to be fully entertained and dressed, and visit with family and friends in the weekend, with social distancing in place of course.

To many, this holiday is a far cry from the canonical image of the first historic Thanksgiving event in 1621 at the Plymouth Plantation, which was a harvest feast attended by settlers, known as Pilgrims in the colony.

They celebrated for three days after their first harvest that year.

William Bradford, who had attended the feast wrote in the journal Of Plymouth Plantation, “They began now to gather in the small harvest they had, and to fit up their houses and dwellings against

winter, being all well recovered in health and strength and had all things in good plenty.

“For as some were thus employed in affairs abroad, others were exercised in fishing, about cod and bass and other fish, of which they took good store, of which every family had their portion. All the summer there was no want; and now began to come in store of fowl, as winter approached, of which this place did abound when they can be used (but afterward decreased by degrees).”

Through the centuries, this event has taken on a different significance – of capitalism, commercialism, bigger turkeys, longer tables, and more state-of-the-art decorations, along with a great game of football for our southern neighbours

in the US. Somewhere the sentiment or the gesture of selflessness and service, but above all gratitude have dwindled down the spiral of materialism. But my hope is this year will be a little different . . . as much as the pandemic has created havoc and shut down so much of people’s livelihoods, it’s also compelled us to slow down, and take a deeper look at who we are.

In past years, when I haven’t had the good fortune of shar-

ing the holiday with my family or friends, I’ve helped out at soup kitchens, sometimes serving meals or making portraits at homeless shelters, which is a personal acknowledgement of the abundance that I’ve enjoyed most of my life. And the day has ended with mixed feelings – of service, relief, gratitude, but always humility.

As a prelude to Christmas, ten weeks and some following, this is a day that comes and goes at

breakneck speed, and the only thing tethering us to the moment is perhaps at some point we will get to sit down and enjoy a scrumptious meal of stuffed turkey and all the frillings with our loved ones – one that will take care of all our emotional needs albeit for the moment, before we all go back to our homes and realities, whatever that might be.

So perhaps this year we will recalibrate our perspective, and bring back

the gratitude and thanks in Thanksgiving, not only as a reminder of all our blessings, but also that life can go off the rails, any minute.

Perhaps at this time of the year than any, we should come together in celebration and in service; not to reflect on what so many of us don’t have, or might not have, but to acknowledge how much we have, and to accept the responsibility of sharing it with those in our lives.

Pedestrians have an important role to play to ensure their own safety: Sgt. Knelsen Moush John Tofield Mercury

The traffic safety initiative for October is Pedestrian Safety, and according to Tofield Sgt. Lee Knelsen, drivers have a responsibility to share the road responsibly, and pedestrians have an equally important role to ensure their safety.

“At some point in your day, you will be a pedestrian or encounter one as a driver,” he said. “And as pedestrians you are at greatest risk for harm during inclement weather and in the fall and winter as daylight hours decrease.”

Year-round, statistics have shown most crashes involving pedestrians

happen on Fridays between 3 and 6 p.m., he added.

“Motorists, including cyclists, have to stop and yield at pedestrian crossovers, school crossings, and other places where a crossing guard is present,” Knelsen said.

“Motorists can proceed only after all the pedestrians and crossing guards have made it to the other side of the street.

“You can identify a school crossing by the presence of a crossing guard and a school crossing sign. You can identify a pedestrian crossover by the presence of crossing signs, crossing road marks (such as painted stripes), and crossing lights.”

According to Knelsen, some pedestrian crossovers have traffic lights with pedestrian push buttons that allow pedestrians to signal when they want to cross.

However, pushing the pedestrian push button does not mean that you

can cross the street immediately. You still have to wait for the crossing light to turn green.

Tips for drivers: • Stay alert – Don’t let other tasks distract you from driving. Yield to pedestrians in crosswalks. Every intersection

Positive outlook for harvest, says Reeve Patricia Harcourt There is a positive outlook with recent good weather helping out the harvest in Beaver County.

Certainly, Reeve Jim Kallal felt favourable conditions mean the bad falls for the past two years that delayed harvest will, hopefully, not persist this year.

The county saw snow in September and ongoing wet conditions in both 2018 and 2019. Some fields were so soggy that crops weren’t taken off until the spring.

But this year the snow did not come last month and the rain has held off, too.

“It has been a good start to the harvest and the weather has proven favourable,” said Kallal. “The sunshine and wind have been welcome this fall and the drier conditions with little frost or overnight dew, have allowed harvest conditions to proceed steadily within the county.”

Kallal also attributed the recent warm, dry weather for allowing the county to “catch up on many road issues and our roads are generally in good shape headed into harvest.”

But rain in the spring and summer have caused the water table in many areas to remain high.

“There is still high water in many areas and some roads are still closed because of the flooding in ponds and wetlands,” he said. “There are still some problem spots on roads our crews are focused on while harvest is underway.”

Pea harvest is complete for most producers, and spring wheat harvest is nearing completion, he said.

Canola is maturing nicely and some producers have been able to start the canola harvest.

“There are reports that some crops have been coming off tough in certain areas and may require drying,” he said.

The Alberta Crop Report is stating that crops quality is variable with wheat and canola quality above the five-year average while oats and peas may be below that five-year average.

“The weather forecast for the next 10 days continues to provide lots of sunshine and, therefore, producers should be able to get more crops off the field,” Kallal added.

“We hope the best for our producers and farmers this fall,” he said. “For drivers, please share the road and be conscious of the large machinery moving around the county to facilitate their operations.

“Also, please know that county council is doing all it can to contain costs so that our financial situation doesn’t put a larger burden on our taxpayers, who are also feeling stress to pay their bills.

Reeve and council attend meeting with new minister Patricia Harcourt Beaver County Reeve Jim Kallal attended a recent meeting in Stettler with the rest of council to discuss the proposed new assessment model review for oil and gas.

Changes to the assessment model for oil and gas properties under provincial control are expected to profoundly affect the revenues of rural municipalities, including Beaver County.

“The provincial government has proposed four scenarios and in all of them, Beaver County’s assessment base related to oil and gas properties will be significantly reduced,” said Assistant CAO Margaret Jones in an earlier report to council.

Predicted for Beaver County is a “substantial increase in the residential and non-residential mill rates, a reduction in staff, service level adjustments, elimination of programs, and reduced grant funding to our urban partners for intermunicipal partnerships,” stated Jones.

Beaver County Council attended a meeting in Stettler to convince Municipal Affairs of the profound

effects this proposal would have on the revenues of rural municipalities.

“Our new Minister of Municipal Affairs, Tracy Allard, was very receptive to our concerns and suggestions,” said Kallal. “The meeting was attended by numerous rural municipalities as well as urban municipalities.”

Kallal said that, while waiting on a decision about this topic from Municipal Affairs, Allard was to make an interim decision for 2021.

Then all the parties would be brought back to the table for discussion on how the final decision by MA would be made.

“We understood that a decision for 2021 was to be made by Oct. 1 so that all municipalities can adopt an interim budget by year’s end,” explained Kallal.

“Until we know how our revenue for industry is reduced by the province, it is difficult to determine how this will affect our residents and taxpayers - except to know that our revenue from industry will be reduced.”

The result of reduced revenue “will mean difficult decisions for council,” he predicted, for upcoming budget deliberations.

County applies for “shoulder pulls” as shovel ready projects Patricia Harcourt Beaver County has applied to the Municipal Stimulus Program for some rural road upgrade funding.

“The upgrades will likely be ‘shoulder pulls,’ which means pulling gravel from the shoulders and reshaping the roads to re-establish a good crown to the roads,” Reeve Jim Kallal explained.

“We are eligible to apply for about $700,000 and we haven’t heard yet if we are successful. If so, these would be done in 2021 and likely by contractors.”

The stimulus program criteria prefers that projects be “shovel ready,” or ready to start immediately, and that they are not performed in-house, or by the county’s public works department. The idea being to put as many people to work and stimulate the economy as much as possible.

Convention Going Virtual Rural Municipalities of Alberta (RMA), to which Beaver County is a member, will not be holding a regu-

lar convention this fall due to COVID-19 restrictions, reports Kallal.

“As soon as we have more information, we are happy to share with the public,” he said.

COVID-19 Update “Recently, there have been no new cases in Beaver County, but we must stay diligent,” reported Kallal.

“Since children are back in school, all of us need to take that extra step and be cautious to prevent transmitting COVID-19, as this may be more serious with kids attending school and some gatherings being allowed.”

He added: “The county office is open for business and we expect some people to attend to pay their taxes, as the deadline is Oct. 31. If at all possible we encourage people to pay through their bank, electronically or by putting a cheque in the mail.

“This will avoid a large lineup of people at the county office, while we are still trying to manage the risk of COVID-19.”

Sept. 16 Council highlights Closed Session – Land – Pt. NE 10 – 46 – 11 – W4 Council passed a motion that Council agree with the assessment of Pt. NE 10-46-11-W4 (west side of Lake Vernon) as presented by County Assessor and further that administration proceed with negotiations for the sale of subject property with the adjacent landowner at the appraised price of $39,590.

Closed Session – Personnel – Chief Administrative Officer Review Council passed a motion to schedule a Special Closed Council Meeting for September 30, commencing at 10 a.m., in Council Chambers.

Five Year Road Plan Council discussed the updated five-year road plan 2021 – 2025.

At the September 2, meeting, a motion was presented that Council approve the updated five-year road plan 2021 – 2025 with the addition of Range Road 182 in 2022, Carey Ridge Estates as a TerraCem road in 2023, and the addition of Meadowbrook Estates, Birch Grove Estates, and Country Squire Estates as TerraCem roads in 2023 or 2024, subject to final budget approval

in each year. The motion was tabled to allow time for Council to review the Development Agreement for Carey Ridge Estates. Council voted on the tabled motion, the motion was defeated by Recorded Vote.

Following the vote on the tabled motion Council passed a motion,

by Recorded Vote, that Council approve the updated five-year road plan 2021 – 2025 with the addition of Range Road 182 in 2022 as well as Carey Ridge Estates be surfaced before 2023 and that dust control be provided until the road is surfaced as to the discretion of Council.

Viking Airport – Cost Sharing Agreement Council passed a motion approving the amended Schedule A of the Viking Airport Cost-Sharing Agreement. At the time that the agreement was developed, the area that was included in the agreement was the boundary of the Holden/Beaver shared services area instead of the Viking/Beaver shared services area. The amendment corrects the error that was made to the description of the area from

which the cost-sharing formula is determined.

Viking/Beaver Family Community Support Services – Public at Large Member Appointment Council passed a motion approving the appointment of Diane Weaver to the Viking Family Community Support Services as a Beaver County Public at Large member representing the Kinsella area.

Claystone Waste Update Cr. Smook updated Council on Claystone Waste as follows: • An area resident who had concerns regarding the formation of Claystone Waste has been contacted and provided a response to his/her concerns.

• Large item pick-up will commence in October.

• Board membership for Claystone Waste is being addressed; Cr. Smook will provide more information to Council at a future meeting.

Closed Session – Land Council passed a motion to approve the amended sale of Land in Equity Industrial Park Policy to reflect a new price zone (Zone 1B) and adjusted lot prices for Zone 1B and Zone 2.

Beaver County continues to monitor the coronavirus outbreak, and our commitment to the health and safety of our community and our staff remains our top priority.

Starting September 21st, 2020, Beaver County will begin conducting field surveys to detect Clubroot within the County. County Pest Inspectors follow industry-standard sanitation practices while conducting these surveys.

Beaver County encourages producers to sample their fields. Sampling tips may be found at www.clubroot.ca. With early detection, growers, custom operators and others who visit the field can take steps to contain the spores and protect their fields and those of their neighbours.

If Clubroot is found while sampling, please contact the Beaver County Agriculture Department at (780) 663-3730.

Staff are diligently practicing “physical distancing” and taking other necessary precautions to prevent the spread of the virus, and we ask that you respect the health and safety protocols we have implemented when paying your property taxes this year.

The deadline for payment of property taxes to avoid penalty is November 2, 2020.

‘Serve Up Fire Safety in the Kitchen’ is this year’s theme of Fire Prevention Week 2020, according to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA).

NFPA stated that cooking is the leading cause of home fires and home fire injuries, with Thanksgiving being the leading day for fires involving cooking equipment.

Here’s some tips on how to help reduce accidents in the kitchen while cooking: • Stay in the kitchen when you’re frying, boiling, grilling, or broiling.

• If you are simmering, baking, or roasting food, check it regularly and stay in the home.

• Always keep a lid nearby when cooking. If a small grease fire starts, slide the lid over the pan and turn off the burner.

Leave the pan covered until it’s cool.

• Keep anything that can catch fire away from

your stovetop.

• Loose clothing can hang down onto stove burners and catch fire.

Wear short, close-fitting, or tightly rolled sleeves when cooking.

• Have a “kid-free zone” of at least three feet around the stove and areas where hot food or drink is prepared or carried.

NFPA noted that smoke alarms detect and alert people to a fire in the early stages, and can mean the difference between life and death in a fire.

garding heating safely: • All heaters need space. Keep anything that can burn at least three feet away from heating equipment.

• Have a three-foot “kid-free zone” around open fires and space heaters.

• Purchase and use only portable space heaters listed by a qualified testing laboratory.

• Have a qualified pro-

fessional install heating equipment.

• Maintain heating equipment and chimneys by having them cleaned and inspected by a qualified professional at least once a year.

• Slow down – Always follow posted speed limit signs especially in residential areas and in school and playground zones. A pedestrian struck by a car travelling at 50 km/hr is eight times more likely to be killed than a pedestrian struck at 30 km/hr.

It is the law, and it is illegal to do any of the following:

• Park on a crosswalk or within five metres of a marked crosswalk ($78 fine).

• Park within five metres from an intersection ($78 fine).

• Fail to yield to a pedestrian who is indicating their intention to cross at a crosswalk ($155).

• Fail to yield to a pedestrian who is in a crosswalk ($776 fine plus five demerit points) Tips for pedestrians: • When you are a pedestrian, it is your job to make sure vehicles see you.

RCMP report Continued from Page 5 the problem. The RCMP would like to advise the public that it is illegal and unsafe to proceed through a railway crossing when the stop signals are flashing and the signal arms are down. It may take a kilometre or more for a train to stop, even under full emergency braking. The safety of you and your passengers depends entirely on you, the driver.

On Sept. 29, Tofield RCMP responded to a domestic disturbance where it was reported that an individual was not complying with a no contact order. RCMP attended, identified the persons involved and resolved the complaint. No charges were laid at this time.

In the afternoon of Sept. 29, Tofield RCMP responded to a stolen license plate complaint.

Upon investigation, it was found that this license plate was stolen from a motorcycle in the Holden area quite some time ago and that same license plate was recently observed to be on a vehicle in the Edmonton area as reported by Edmonton City Police.

In the evening of Sept.

29, Tofield RCMP responded to an assault in the downtown Tofield area. RCMP attended the area and were advised by

the complainant that they could hear arguing and crying. Patrols made by the RCMP although no one was located.

In the early morning of Sept. 30, Tofield RCMP and the Fire Department responded to a brush fire in a ditch near the Bottle Depot in Tofield. Tofield Fire was able to put out the fire with no property or structure damage. It is undermined if this fire was intentionally set.

On Sept. 30, Tofield RCMP responded to a stolen blue 2010 Dodge Ram truck, which was stolen from an attached garage to the complainant’s residence in the rural Tofield area.

This file is still under investigation.

In the morning of Sept.

30, Tofield RCMP responded to a stolen 1995 blue Chevrolet truck, which was stolen from the Ryley area although, was subsequently recovered in Holden.

On Oct. 1, Tofield RCMP received a complaint of an injured Moose, which was last seen and believed to be in the Beaver County area.

RCMP attempted to locate and speak to the complainant although no further information was received as to the whereabouts or injuries of the Moose. Complainant was provided further information to speak with Alberta Fish and Wildlife.

On Oct. 2, Tofield

RCMP responded to a suspicious vehicle complaint in the Holden area.

The registered owner was contacted and advised to relocate the vehicle or it would be towed.

In the afternoon of Oct. 2, Tofield RCMP responded to a theft of fuel complaint from a construction vehicle in the rural area outside Tofield.

The complainant reports that they observed a suspect described as approximately 40 years old, dark hair and short beard driving a two tone blue or grey 1990 style Chevrolet truck. This file is still under investigation.

On Oct. 3, Tofield RCMP responded to a complaint of hunters who were not complying with proper hunting authorities in the Beaver Country area. RCMP attended, located and identified all parties involved and were able to determine that all hunters were abiding by and compliant with all firearm and hunting restrictions.

On Oct. 4, Tofield RCMP responded to a break and enter to a cooperated business in Tofield area where a rear door to the business appeared to be damaged and ajar. RCMP attended and spoke to the property representatives where it was determined to be a civil issue between the representatives.

BRSD students take to at-home learning with more than 700 enrolled so far Moush John Tofield Mercury

Battle River School Division students across the board have taken to at-home learning with more than 700 enrolled division wide, according to Diane Hutchinson, Director of Communications at BRSD. Although Hutchinson was able to provide the number of students enrolled for at-home learning per grade, she said that at the division level they aren’t tracking the at-home students separately on a school-byschool basis.

“We aren’t tracking them school by school because they are still enrolled in their ‘home’ schools and count toward that school’s enrolment,” Hutchinson

explained. “Basically, there are students in the At-Home Learning program from every school and community, and we know the numbers according to grade.”

The enrolments according by grade are as follows: K – 44; 1 – 51; 2 – 49; 3 – 43; 4 – 58; 5 – 48; 6 – 60; 7 – 69; 8 – 69; 9 – 66; 10 – 46; 11 – 60; and 12 – 46.

Speaking to changes in staff numbers, Hutchinson added, “There were a number of BRSD teachers re-assigned from their positions to support the At-Home Learning program, which did result in some schools having to make last minute adjustments in their schedules to accommodate having fewer teachers in the building.”

According to her, there are 25 teachers supporting students through the At-Home Learning program.

“In addition to re-assigning about a dozen existing teachers, we have brought in a similar number of other teachers on temporary contracts to support the At-Home Learning program,” Hutchinson stated. “We have also hired additional custodial staff for every BRSD school; and are also using more substitute staff than we usually do.

“And we continue to purchase disposable personal protective equipment for staff, along with extra disinfecting supplies. All of those things come at a cost!”

Position: Customer Service Representative/Billing Clerk Posting Date: October 5, 2020 Job Location: Village of Ryley Description: The Highway 14 Regional Water Services Commission purchases treated water from EPCOR via Strathcona County and distributes it to its member and non-member municipalities throughout the service area. They include Strathcona County, Beaver County, Town of Tofield, Village of Ryley, Village of Holden, Town of Viking and Camrose County. These municipalities rely upon the Highway 14 Commission for the delivery of a safe and reliable supply of treated water. Emphasis is placed on safety for the work group and the public. The successful applicant will be enrolled in the Local Authorities Pension Plan and receive medical, dental and insurance benefits.

Responsibilities: Under the direction of the Office Manager the successful applicant will provide support in all aspects of Customer Service and the billing, consumption and fixed rate charges and rate changes for the regional water system. Requirements will include skills in accounts receivable, collections and excellent communication skills. Receptionist duties will involve talking to new clients and assessing their needs, communicating the requirements of connections, disconnects and new installations. This is full time employment and is located in the main offices of Highway 14 Regional Water Services Commission. The successful applicant will be confident with computers, excel, Microsoft Office land locations and be congenial in working with co-workers, customers and municipal representatives.

Qualifications: • Minimum Grade 12 diploma, or GED/ post-secondary in Office/Business Administration.

• Knowledge of programs such as Serenic (Bellamy) Utility billing is an asset.

• Excellent record keeping, documentation and organizational skills.

Ability to work under stress, handle situations and meet deadlines.

• Strong analytical skills and ability to moderately complex accounting or mathematical functions.

• Excellent computer skills and knowledge of Microsoft Office.

• Must have a pleasant telephone personality and effective communication skills, both written and verbal.

• Must have the ability to function with minimal supervision.

• Requirement to complete a security clearance check.

• Applicants must provide educational and employment history as well as references.

Compensation: Hours of work are 35 hours per week, Monday to Friday.

Annual salary range is from $55,692 to $70,616

She further explained that even though there were some bumps along the road – since this was newly introduced, especially with all the changes – families are feeling more comfortable than they were even a month ago.

“There continues to be some concerns raised about having students stay home or be sent home if they are sick; we understand that this can be a real challenge for families, but we also know that we must all abide by the Alberta Health Services (AHS) guidelines,” Hutchinson explained. “Staff are fac-

ing the same circumstances, and we are grateful to all of those who are keeping themselves or their children home when they are sick. It is helping to keep everyone in school safe and well.”

As of Oct. 5, about six per cent of all schools in Alberta had one or more active cases of COVID19, but no cases have been reported in any of the BRSD schools up to this point.

“We’re fortunate to be in a part of the province where the case numbers are currently low and by taking care of ourselves and each other, we can help keep it that way.”
