Mother heartbroken after son’s memorial cross stolen MOUSH JOHN Editor At the back entrance to Elk Island between Hwy. 831 and Twp. Rd. 550, Marianne Armstrong had been visiting her son Braeden Bumphrey’s memorial cross in the ditch since July 2015. “We put up the cross a month after his passing, in the ditch at the exact same spot where his truck had been impacted,” Armstrong said. “His father Dave, sister Kennedy, and I had made the cross at the time.” However, in early September she found the cross missing. “I found a note in late summer, handwritten on a scrap piece of paper asking us to remove the cross as they were annoyed with it and didn’t want to look at it any longer,” Armstrong added. “I disregarded the note hoping the disgruntled person would go on about their life and not concern themselves with
the memorial that had been there for more than five years. But that wasn’t the case because a few weeks back we found the cross missing.” Initially, Armstrong thought maybe it was the county. “I didn’t contact the RCMP, but checked in with the county to see if they had removed it, but they hadn’t,” she explained. “This confirmed my fears. My intention is not to annoy or bother anyone. I am a mom with a gaping hole in my soul where my son belongs. “I simply have the small memorial because it brings some peace to my heart and it’s a place where the people who loved Braeden stop by on occasion to feel just a little closer to him.” Armstrong described her 20-year-old son as an adventurous person, who always followed his heart and never did anything in the “basic way.” “No parent ever imag-
