One of the cornerstones of Tofield and area community, Busy B held its Annual Open House and Awareness event on Saturday, March 7 at the

Tofield Community Hall.

The first hour was dedicated to all the 30 projects that Busy B supports, followed by an invitation dinner.

“We were very happy with the turnout,” said Yvonne Brown, who is the main operator and or-

ganizer of the establishment along with her team of “awesome volunteers”. “We are so happy that we were able to give out some cheques to local organizations who are an integral part of our community.”

ious boards in town and beyond has been raising awareness to all the projects that were on display.

From yarn for the Tofield Lodge Knitters to Edmonton’s Reuse Centre, there were a huge range of projects that Busy B supports.

“Among the funds we gave out were cheques to the Tofield Ag. Society for the Bull Bash ($500); Happy Wanderers ($500); Wild Oats & Notes Music Festival ($300); Tofield School Christmas Breakfast ($250); Tofield School Musical Theatre ($300);

SNOW GOOSE FESTIVAL – APRIL 25 - 26, 2020 First birder at Beaverhill Lake Late Prof. William Rowan and the late Robert Lister, both from the Zoology Department of the University of Alberta, made long-term observations of the birds of Beaverhill Lake Since 1921 birdwatchers have been enticed to Beaverhill Lake to observe migratory waterfowl.

William Rowan, one of the first to observe and collect birds, was a frequent visitor to the area for almost 40 years.

Inspired by Rowan and his field notes, Robert Lister a colleague of Rowan and at the time, an Edmonton naturalist and columnist wrote a book about the lake.

Lister’s book called The Birds and Birders of Beaverhill Lake describes the history of birding at the lake.

Beaverhill Lake is a large, shallow lake that is 16 kms long, 10 kms wide and no more than two metres deep.

The lake's name is a translation of the Cree name, amisk-wa-chisakhahigan (Holmgren and Holmgren 1976). The lake appears on the Thompson map of 1814 as

Beaver Lake. This map also shows the nearby Beaver Hills, now known as the Cooking Lake Moraine, which were named for the large number of beaver found there.

This makes the lake a perfect place for birds.

Every year, tens of thousands of migrating birds stop at Beaverhill Lake to rest and feed.

More than 270 species of birds have

been identified at the lake.

The lake, has been recognized provincially, nationally and internationally as a waterfowl staging area.

In 1987, it was recognized as a Ramsar Site by the International Union for Conservation of Nature and a National Nature Viewpoint by the Canadian Nature Federation. As well that same year the Alberta government desig-

nated an area Beaverhill Nature Area within the larger area that is defined as Beaverhill Lake.

It is also known as a key wetland in the Wetlands for Tomorrow agreement with Ducks Unlimited and Alberta Fish and Wildlife.

It was in 1995 that seven nesting pairs of Piping Plovers were found on the shore of Beaverhill Lake.

The Piping Plover

is an endangered bird species.

In 1996 it was also designated as a Western Hemisphere Shorebird Reserve Network because of its importance to migrating and nesting shorebirds.

Bird Studies Canada announced Beaverhill Lake as an Important Birding Area in 1997.

Beaverhill Lake was proclaimed as one of Alberta’s Special Places 2000 sites, in February 2000.

the pain of the 2020 provincial budget announced Feb. 27,” Smook added. “The province is downloading significant costs to municipalities.

And it is doing so without consultation or warning making it impossible for local Councils to plan appropriately.”

Smook explained that the province is downloading to municipalities and municipal taxpayers. While Jason Kenney’s government is proud to maintain education funding, the province is actually paying less, and downloading more to the municipalities through education property tax. They are also downloading policing costs to municipalities, while reducing the amount of fine revenue municipalities keep, and reducing the amount of taxes mu-

nicipalities can collect from industry. It’s putting a great deal of pressure on municipalities.

In his latest budget, Jason Kenney eliminated a $500,000 firefighting grant that was used by volunteer departments throughout the province.

This grant has been around for 20 years. Its elimination was announced two months into the fiscal year.

“Fire departments and municipalities were informed through the media,” Smook said.

“This means that they have not been able to prepare alternative funding.

Firefighters are at risk of losing out on training, which protects lives and property. Jason Kenney is also increasing educational property tax by four per cent; however, many municipal tax pay-

ers will see a bigger 2020 increase than that.”

According to Smook, big increase is because of the province’s lack of forethought and communication.

In 2019, the province did not release its budget until months after municipalities were required to collect taxes. This meant that municipalities had to guess the amount of property taxes the province would require.

“Not wishing to overburden their residents, many municipalities underestimated the province’s property tax,” Smook noted. “This means that many property tax payers are about to take a double hit. They will need to pay for the province’s 2020 tax increase, while also making up for a 2019 shortfall.”

Calgary City Councillor Ward Sutherland has been quoted as saying, “It’s just ugly news.”

But it gets uglier.

There are many other cuts municipalities are facing. They include: • A large reduction in infrastructure funding; • A much lower share of fine revenue; • A requirement for municipalities to pay more for policing without any guarantee of increased RCMP presence; • A cut of 50 per cent to grants in place of taxes; • A slashing of affordable housing capital funding.

“And in the midst of all these cuts, we just learned that the UCP is hoping municipalities will step up and operate a number of provincial parks!” Smook said.

Loose Ends: Age is just a number

I have a new hero. Well, Erma Bombeck will always be the first and best – I’ve always wanted to be her. But Alice Lukacs,

whose debut column Life in the 90s caught my eye, is a close second. Alice impressed me with her outlook on how to be 90 without being really old.

You go, girl.

Personally, I think living 90-plus years is something to be proud of. I’m not there yet, despite what early mornings tell me; a long way off, actually. But some of the ailments Alice and her friends are dealing with sound all too familiar to

me. Arthritis especially.

Limping, using canes and walkers go along with that. Hearing loss is big for Hubby but that isn’t necessarily age related.

He was a much younger man when a car battery blew up in his face and damaged his ears. He complains about hearing aids – he calls them his earmuffs – not doing their job and often keeps me close so I can be his ears.

It’s nice to be needed. But life is much happier since

he got headphones for watching TV. Age spots were mentioned. I think they are also called liver spots unless they are two different spots, in which case we can all look forward to having leopard skins. The appearance of numerous spots on my arms following my six weeks of captivity after knee surgery had me wondering if I was turning into frecklefaced Howdy Doody. I blamed the massive

“Kenney has spent a great deal of time asking for a “fair deal” from Ottawa.

Which is important. But we’d love to know from him: when is he going to

setup a fair deal, or at least a fair conversation, with municipalities?”

Falling is a fear. Just last week Hubby took a bummer on invisible ice.

That’s the opposite of a header, with a softer landing for those of us with, um, well-padded butts, not so much for

him – his padding has all migrated to the front. But he landed in a snowbank so no damage done, not even to his ego since no one was around to watch him struggle to his feet. I envision an upturned turtle.

We stopped celebrating birthdays a long time ago but we just might bake a cake for the big 9-0. Mark your calendars for May 2033 and July 2035 – you’re all invited. You too, Alice.

What’s the deal with toilet paper?

Some weeks there are so many amusing or annoying things going on, that it is just plain hard to decide what to complain about. This seems to be one of those weeks, and rather than just choosing one I thought maybe it was time to do a mixed bag of opinions.

Was anyone else in shock and awe when former Wildrose Party leader Brian Jean publicly stated he was on Premier Jason Kenney’s side when it comes to trying to negotiate a better deal for Alberta in Canada? I was.

Jean went just a little bit further than the Premier. He said Ottawa has got to agree with Alberta’s demands for equality in Canada, or risk separation. In fact, he suggested Alberta leave

if PM Trudeau does not agree to the recommendations by the Fair Deal Panel which will be presented in early April.

It’s not like the Fair Deal Panel or Jean are asking for anything unreasonable: each province should be treated fairly; House and Senate should have true representation by population; eliminate the ability of the federal government from passing laws that impact one province without the majority of provincial MPs and Senators from that province also supporting it; and have the constitution state that one single province can not prevent another from having access to tidewater for the purpose of international trade.

Jean has publicly stated that he has reached a breaking point, and that Canada is broken.

He’s a smart man, and a true Albertan to set his past disputes with Kenney aside to support this plight.

An inconvenient truth . . .

In an article recently revived from the 1800s about an expedition to the North Pole, a Dutch whaling captain’s log in 1665 stated that he guided his wooden ship to longitude 89.5° N “and found open iceless waters.”

As well, in 1766, Captain Thomas Robinson reached 82.5° N “and found the seas so open that he might at least have sailed on to 83°.” In 1773, the captain’s log said he travelled to longitude 81.5° N in pursuit of whales and saw the

sea “open to the west and east-north-east as far as he could distinguish from the masthead.” For reference, we are roughly at longitude 53-54° depending on your location.

Is it possible that global warming was occurring before the industrial revolution when the human population was only 50 million? Must be 17th and 18th Century climate change, right?

And then there’s this . . .

I understand that

with social media’s knee-jerk overreaction to every little thing that happens on the planet, people are already fearful of Coronavirus despite there only being a couple of known cases in Alberta. But why the toilet paper hoarding? I panic when there is no food, either in the fridge or in grocery stores. Without food, not much need for excessive toilet paper in my opinion.

Sunny days ahead . . . I can never understand the issue so

many people have with Daylight Savings Time (DST). A study published in the National Post over the weekend stated that the one hour time change creates a six per cent increase in fatal vehicle accidents during the week of the change due to sleep misalignment. What gobshite.

Personally I couldn’t care less if they stopped changing the clocks. On the other hand I have always enjoyed an extra hour of evening golf.

Last week, Tofield Detachment responded to a total of 42 calls for serv-

ice, nine of which were motor vehicle collisions.

On March 2, Tofield RCMP received a report of a theft of a skid steer from a work site on Rge. Rd. 173 and Twp. Rd. 500, north of Ryley. Surveillance footage was obtained which showed a white flat deck truck and a black pick up scoping out the site prior to the theft. The skid steer was used to break the main gate and was then loaded onto a trailer. This investigation is still ongoing.

On March 3, a female in town received a call from a telephone scammer looking for access to her computer to run a scan for viruses. The female gave the caller access and then provided her credit card information. The RCMP would like to remind the public, if you

receive any calls looking for personal or financial information, this is a scam. Never, ever release any information over the phone.

On March 5, Tofield RCMP were dispatched to a motor vehicle collision at the intersection of Hwy. 834 and Hwy. 14.

The car was stopped at the stop sign on Hwy. 834 heading south and proceeded to make a left turn onto Hwy. 14. The car was struck by a westbound pick up causing significant damage to both vehicles. The driver of the car was charged.

Tofield RCMP were dispatched to a domestic situation where the male had been assaulted by his female partner. The male sustained injuries to his face and hands, the female also threatened to kill him. The female was arrested and charged with assault and uttering threats. She was released to family with a court date in Vegreville.

On March 6, at 0530 hrs, Tofield RCMP were called on to assist on a file originating out of Consort RCMP Detachment.

There was a break-andenter and theft of the post office there and suspects and suspect vehicle identified. This operation involved six detachment areas and in the end, the

suspect vehicle crashed after going around a Bridge Closed sign south of Vegreville. Both suspects have been arrested and charged.

On March 9, Tofield RCMP were notified of a suspicious trailer in the Holden Storage Yard.

Member attended and checked the trailer which had been stolen out of Bashaw and reported on

Feb. 28. The owner of the trailer was notified and recovered the trailer.

Bashaw RCMP advised During the evening hours of March 9, an east bound vehicle on Hwy. 14 struck a moose between Rge. Rd. 200 & Rge. Rd. 201. The driver was transported to Tofield Hospital by Ambulance with cuts to his face.

CW Sears on BRSD project funding list Moush John Tofield Mercury

Amidst all the school closure news in the County, BRSD is hoping to get a capital project funding list reviewed and approved for this year at its regular board meeting on Thursday, March 19.

“CW Sears is not on the government-approved

project list yet, but we’re hoping to resubmit our priority project list again for this year,” said Diane Hutchinson, BRSD communications director.

“All school divisions are required to submit a capital project list to the government each year. It provides an indication of each division's priorities but it does not mean the projects will be approved immediately.”

For instance, Hutchinson said that when they were trying to modernize the CTS area of Camrose Composite High School, it took 10 years to get the approval.

“The replacement of Bawlf, Bashaw, and Chester Ronning Schools were each on our capital project list as modernizations,” she explained.

structure took a look at the cost of modernization, they decided it was more cost effective to simply replace the buildings than upgrade them.

We received approval for the Chester Ronning project three years ago and were granted funding for the project two years ago; and we are just now at the point where plans are finalized enough to be going to tender later this spring.”

The timelines were similar with each of the Bawlf and Bashaw schools as well.

All of the funding for

capital projects is supplied by Alberta Education/Alberta Infrastructure, and none of the money comes from school division budgets, according to Hutchinson.

The government allocates a certain amount of money for capital projects and they approve as many projects as they are able to from across the whole province each year.

Speaking to the process on how various projects get on the BRSD list, Hutchinson said that every year the facilities crew does a review of all

the facilities and evaluates needs.

“CW Sears is highly utilized and has had multiple modulars added over the years, so it would be beneficial to have a bigger building,” she explained. “It’s also got some issues due to ground shifting under the current building, so it was placed as the number one priority.”

The list has not yet been approved for this year, and often the priority project list remains the same but sometimes a new priority comes up and the list gets revised.

It was a momentous event for Tofield and area as residents and visitors packed the stands to see their First Responders playing against the CFCW Critters on Thursday evening, March 5.

A fundraising event slated to bring in some support for the Tofield Handibus, the evening kept up to its hype, raising in the exess of $5,000 after expenses.

“We don’t have the exact number yet, but it was a huge success!” said Jim Warren, President of the Tofield Handibus Society. “All proceeds will

be going towards the operational and maintenance costs of the bus, which has been a part of the community for a very long time; it’s an old bus.”

Warren said that there was an estimated number of 400 people at least who came to see their friends and family play the Critters.

“It was a family event, and at the same time it supported something invaluable to the community,” Warren added.

The Tofield Minor Hockey manned the concession and a lot of the local businesses and corganizations came forward to chip in for the

raffle and door prizes.

The raffle draw included three much sought-after items – a Connor McDavid jersey, an Oscar Klefbom stick, and a pair of Apple AirPods.

The Lions Club members donated their time to help out with the entrance tickets and also 50/50.

“This event wouldn’t be possible without the help of all the amazing volunteers and businesses we have in this community,” Warren said. “A huge shoutout to everyone who donated their time and efforts.”

County Council won't send letter on school closure to minister prior to board decision Patricia Harcourt Beaver County councillors disagreed on the timing of sending a letter in support of keeping the schools in Holden and Ryley open.

The Battle River School Division board is proposing the closure of the elementary school in Holden with students there going by bus to Ryley.

The Ryley School would remain open but the high school portion would close. The result would be a kindergarten to Grade 9 school in Ryley which includes Holden elementary students.

High school students from Holden and Ryley would have the option of going to Viking or Tofield schools. The school board is planning to make its decision on this proposal on Thursday, March 19 - a day before the next regular meeting of county council.

Deputy Reeve Gene Hrabec, who represents Division 3 which includes the Holden area, spoke passionately against the proposal at a public meeting a couple of weeks ago.

But now Hrabec appears to be taking a more cautious approach, and told council he was opposed to sending a letter to the Minister of Education and Camrose MLA before the decision is made March 19.

Disagreeing were Division 1 Councillor Kevin Smook and Division 4 Councillor Barry Bruce.

The request came from the Village of Ryley CAO, who suggested each municipality write a letter regarding the proposed closures. The letters would be sent to Education Minister Adriana LaGrange and Camrose MLA Jackie Lovely, with copies going to the school board chair and superintendent.

Smook said the appeal should be made to the Minister of Education before the decision is made to close or keep open the schools. He didn't see the effectiveness of waiting until after the March 19 decision was made, noting that council didn't have to be confrontational in its approach.

The county could state the impacts on the community of closure. "The Minister can put on the brakes," he said. "I don't see any harm in being pro-active."

Hrabec disagreed: "BRSD has a hard decision to make," he said. "Let the process go through and then we can deal with the decision…I think we need to give them the opportunity to make a decision," adding he "wants to defer a letter until March 20 when we know the decision."

But Bruce agreed with Smook, noting: "You can't put the horse back in the barn…Communicate our concerns before they make a decision." Bruce advocated for a "fair deal" and less centralization going on in the province.

"Letting our schools fall by the wayside is just one more step in the centralization process that's been going on for last 100 years," he said.

Hrabec said he wanted to wait and see how funding for rural schools could be impacted in the provincial budget, although he didn't say there could be any possible benefit for Holden/Ryley schools.

Reeve Jim Kallal (Division 2) on a teleconference call for the March 4 county council meeting, agreed with Hrabec: "We have to stay on the high road," he said. "We have a good relationship with the MLA, we don't want to poison that."

Division 5 Councillor Dale Pederson said that with five councillors and two schools involved, "we should stay neutral until it's done."

Hrabec's motion to defer the matter to the March 20 council meeting, after the BRSD makes its decision, was passed in a split vote 3-2. In favour were Hrabec, Kallal and Pederson.

Opposed were Bruce and Smook, who asked for a recorded vote.

After the vote, Smook asked the reeve what

Kallal meant by stating the county has "a foot in the door with the MLA," as part of the reason for not sending a letter.

Kallal responded: "She goes to all the events, we don't want to overlap, confuse and disrupt the relationship that has been built."

Answered Smook: "The MLA has not weighed in whatsoever…She's staying out of it." And he thought "the letter would have brought the issue to her attention."

Some of the reasons given in the suggested letter to the minister and the MLA were: communities not reasonably consulted or heard; BRSD moving too quickly to honestly consider the input; being respectful of the process; messages from BRSD aren't followed by actions; and, if the board votes to close the schools, other educational options could be explored by communities.

Direction requested for campground contracts and staff involvement Patricia Harcourt Administration spurred conversation with county councillors when direction was requested regarding the county's two campgrounds.

Two issues included campground contracts and staff involvement at campgrounds.

"In the recent past, council has expressed a concern about the amount of time or resources that staff put towards campground operations," stated CAO Bob Beck, in his report.

"We ask that council review the contracts to determine if they wish staff to inspect the campgrounds on a regular basis to determine that the requirements of the contract are being met," he said.

"We're asking council for input on how much to put into the campgrounds by the staff," he told council, March 4. "We're actually doing very little." Another issue concerned Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S) and an incident that occurred

last year. Council went in closed session to discuss the incident before coming back to open council.

Deputy Reeve Gene Hrabec (Division 3) chaired the meeting, stating there would be some followup regarding the OH&S matter.

Administration would come back with an RFD at the next meeting.

"Do you want us to be out there ensuring the contractor is doing what is outlined in the contract, or spend less time?" Beck asked, noting less could increase some liability concerns.

"Or do we hold them accountable like any other contractor?"

Councillor Kevin Smook (Division 1) said he believed the campground contractors should be held accountable "at least as much as last year."

"I would like to see more inter-action (to show that) the contractor is doing due diligence regarding the safety program," said Councillor Barry Bruce (Division 4), in order to keep young people safe.

Campgrounds Continued from BCC2 Reeve Jim Kallal (Division 2) suggested that council should meet with the contractor as there are still two camping seasons left on the contract.

"Council should sit down and look at options," he said, but noted that, "Certainly OH&S has to be number one."

Kallal has spoken out about the campgrounds in the past, considering them to be costing the county too much money to run.

"It seems we spend an awful lot of time on the campgrounds," he said. "I'd like to be clear on these campgrounds."

Kallal made a motion that council meet with the campground operators to discuss budget and safety issues, "and hear their comments."

Kallal said that, "previously, we would sit down and get updates but not in this council session."

Hrabec, who has said in the past he wanted the campgrounds to be more profitable, asked that the Priority Based Budgeting (PBB) process council is doing over the next few months include the campground cost estimates, asking if administration is confident in those figures.

Beck said they weren't, but administration would be going back over the numbers and coming back to council at a later meeting.

"It appears that we have lost hundreds of thousands of dollars," said Hrabec. To that, Beck replied: "Yes, it's a no brainer with those numbers," stating it looked like the county "has lost money."

Beck listed operational issues that county staff were required to address last year. They included: • Floating docks floating away during storm (Camp Lake); • Installation of buoys (Camp Lake); • Sewer line blockage numerous times (Camp Lake); • Computer system issues (booking system, etc.); • Addressing safety issues at beach (wood) Camp Lake.

"At a bare minimum last year, staff attended both campgrounds once per week for water system testing (Provincial regulation) and about once per week to attend to an operational issue or repair that the contractor did not or could not handle," said Beck. "As well, the CPOs attended as part of their regular patrols, but didn't always make a special trip only to inspect campgrounds.

"Some of these items are likely items that the contract requires the contractor to address, or were addressed by previous contractors," he said. "Staff inspected the campgrounds usually only in response to complaints from the public."

Hrabec asked about the floating docks issue, and Beck said: "The previous contractor wouldn't have

called the county for it…This one did call and last year the county did (the floating docks) and it pushed our costs up."

Then Hrabec brought up the sewer line blockages.

Speaking of the contractor, Beck said: "They didn't feel they should do it (fix the blockage)." Beck also felt the contractor should train their own employees to do the work.

"Every time you send out a county staff person to do it, it costs," he said. The motion was passed calling for council to meet with the campground operators to discuss their roles, responsibilities and options. The meeting would include administrative staff and would take place as soon as possible at a subsequent council meeting.

The meeting will address the concerns outlined by CAO Beck in his report: "If council wishes us not to regularly inspect the campgrounds and to direct the contractor to attend to all issues (or otherwise minimize our involvement at the campgrounds), we would like this direction and a motion of council.

"Since the contractor lacks their own Health and Safety Program, the contractor is operating under the County Health and Safety Program. We are unsure of a way to exempt our contractor from meeting requirements of our program; therefore, there will be some time devoted to meeting the Health and Safety Program."

Beaver County is moving to an online reservation system beginning Monday, March 2nd, 2020, through Camp Reservations Canada, for both Black Nugget Lake Park and Camp Lake Park Campgrounds.

BEAVER COUNTY BYLAW 20 -1080 Beaver County and Strathcona County wish to adopt an Intermunicipal Development Plan (IDP) to address future land use, transportation and infrastructure, environment, economic and social development, and responsible intermunicipal coordination. This collaboration will ensure that land use decisions within the IDP area are thoughtfully considered and that potential land use conflicts are minimized, through the work of communication and coordination between the Counties. The draft IDP has been developed using the existing policy areas of both municipalities’ Municipal Development Plans (MDPs), and as a result the proposed IDP will not affect existing land use zoning.

As to how she found out, Korobko said that she was watching news and saw some information on this, and decided to speak with students and see if they could get enough to keep passing on to Crayola, and thereby keeping them out of the landfills.

BESC $700,000 surplus spurs County to ask for financial review

Beaver County Council unanimously passed a motion to defer the county's payment of the Beaver Emergency Services Commission's (BESC) 2020 operating grant pending a meeting to get more information.

This was done after it was learned BESC has a surplus of almost $700,000 being held in capital reserves, after it was learned BESC requisitions were never reconciled to actual figures for the final payment at the end of the year.

Beaver County Assistant CAO Margaret Jones brought the issue up at the March 4 regular meeting, suggesting requisitions could be "substantially reduced" with that kind of surplus built up over time.

The county has a shared services agreement with BESC, which issues a requisition every year to each of its member municipalities for operating and capital expenses.

County Assistant CAO Margaret Jones stated that, under the agreement, the commission is supposed to reconcile each year's operating expenses to the actual

amount required.

"If the total expenses are less than the budget, the last payment of the year is to be reduced," she stated. "This has never been done." Jones said a review of financial statements from 2014 to 2018 "suggests that the commission has accumulated a cash surplus of $692,016."

Jones said administration had been unaware of the policy until this past week, adding "it does not align with the shared services agreement."

Reeve Jim Kallal (Division 2) agreed to a motion

by Councillor Dale Pederson (Division 5) that the requisition payment on operating and capital should be deferred pending getting more information at an upcoming joint meeting.

"We'll have the opportunity later in the month to find out more," he said.

The motion was passed.

Earlier, CAO Bob Beck told council that administration could continue the current practice. "That's fine with us…but we are not now being held to the wording of the agreement as is being done with other such agreements."

He suggested that if the agreement is handled that way for BESC, "we

would then have to do the same if we get a suggestion from other groups to do the same."

Councillor Kevin Smook (Division 1), who sits on the BESC commission, gave his position as a sitting councillor. "This is probably a good idea, it doesn't hurt to ask questions," he said, suggesting that since BESC plans to meet March 25 that this

was also a good time to review the shared services agreement.

"I don't think it's unreasonable for BESC to take a look at this and see where we're at," he said.

"It's not unreasonable at all."

Jones suggested BESC "look at their financial situation," adding the commission's business plan needs updating.

Deputy Reeve Gene Hrabec (Division 3), who is also the BESC board chair, stated there was "significant change in the board in 2017."

There were also "some significant capital purchases," including a $700,000 plus fire truck for Tofield, a $400,000 tanker truck for Viking and new radio equipment to improve com-

munication between the emergency services.

"I'm not a fan of deferring (payment) because we have an agreement in place," he said, noting the issue can still be discussed with other municipalities.

"My view is to go ahead with the payment this month, or defer it until we meet with the joint council," he said.

Tofield Tier 6 Atoms split two close playoff games over the past week. On Thursday at Bruderheim, Tofield fought back from a 6-2 third period deficit to get to within one but lost 7-6.

Jonas Teefy got a hat trick for Tofield, and added an assist. Other scorers were; Gabriel Thorson (1g 3a), Colton Munson (2g), Karter Waldo (2a), Carson Kroeker (1a), and Hunter Madro (1a). On Saturday, Tofield travelled to Athabasca and

skated away with an 8-7 win. The teams were tied in regulation six different times in the game.

Gabriel Thorson (2g 1a), Jonas Teefy (2g 1a) and Colton Munson each scored twice for Tofield.

Gavin Lutz had a 3-point game (1g 2a). Other assists went to; Braydo Crawford (2a), Steven Cardinal, David Cardinal, and Hunter Madro.

Tofield Tier 4 Peewees split two playoff games against Smoky Lake over the past week. On Thursday at SL, Tofield skated away with a 7-3 win.

Carter Olson scored a hat trick for Tofield (3g 1a), while Kowyn Laschowski (2g 2a) had a 4-point game. Other scorers were; Sam Stephen (1g 2a), Ethan Turnbull (1g 1a), and Zachery McFadzean (1a). Jacob Bigney got the win in goal. On Saturday at Tofield Arena, SL scored four first period goals and won 7-3. With total goals tied 10-10 after two games, the teams went into overtime. Tofield

took a penalty, and SL scored on the PP for the win.

Tofield Tier 5 Peewees lost two playoff games over the weekend. On Saturday at Athabasca, the visitors lost 7-2 and were outshot 49-13. Noah Peterson and Kyson Fitzner scored, with assists to; Brandon Jardine, Karter Waldo and Jordynn Dee. On Sunday at Tofield Arena, the home team dropped a 4-1 game. Noah Peterson scored the lone Tofield goal, with Caleb Wenger and Nicholas Tooke picking up assists.

Tofield Tier 3 Bantams tied and beat Redwater over the weekend. On Saturday at Redwater the teams played a seesaw game, with Redwater scoring with only 6:23 remaining to tie the score at 5-5. Connolly Mozak (2g), Lukas Turnbull (1g 1a), Kevin Bartsch, and Seth Sideroff scored.

Davin Codd picked up an assist. Daniel Zander was in goal for Tofield.

Bantams to play Camrose in Consolation A final Moush John Tofield Mercury

Despite not having the kind of season the Tofield Bantams had hoped for, Head Coach Wayne Codd is happy with the way the team has been playing in the final few games.

“We’ve played well and pulled off a few wins in the playoff rouns, albeit consolation,” Codd said.

“We now play Camrose for Consolation A final.”

The Bantams placed second in the consolation round robin winning two

out of three games. They beat out Redwater in the semis and have moved on to the Consolation A final.

They defeated Redwater this past weekend with a 5-5 tie, followed by a 4-2 win.

“These boys worked so hard this year so it was so nice to see a few wins come at the end of the year; the games have been so close all year long so it sure feels nice to get some positive bounces and rewards!” Codd stated.

“The Final round is against a tough rival and will be a good series. All

the boys are playing well and it is fun to watch them implement and execute what they have learned this season.”

The Bantams play their first game in Tofield on Saturday, March 14 at 6:45 p.m. The second game is in Camrose on Sunday, March 15 at 9 a.m.

“This is our final weekend at the rink, and will be several of the boys’ last games as a bantam before they join the ranks of the midgets. They will all be playing hard to try and add another victory to the end of a very fun season.”
