Tofield pharmacy one of the few to have vaccine, booking starts today MOUSH JOHN Editor Tofield’s PharmaChoice will be one of the few pharmacies in the province to administer the COVID-19 vaccine, according to owner, Darren Erickson. “Ours was one of the pharmacies invited to participate in vaccine distribution by Alberta Health Services (AHS) about a month ago,” he said. “The limiting factor was the amount of vaccine available so only a limited number of pharmacies were chosen finally.” Extra Pfizer vaccine was distributed in the pharmacies in the urban areas mostly, like Calgary, Edmonton, and Red Deer last week. “This week AHS included rural Alberta and focused distribution to the pharmacies that did the most flu vaccines for the most susceptible population, which is 75 and

over, and also based on geographic areas. The program will expand very quickly with a goal of 1,300 pharmacies by the end of March.” Tofield PharmaChoice was notified on March 4 that it will recieve the Moderna brand of vaccine. Erickson explained that this product was chosen for rural Alberta because of the easier storage recommendations and longer expiry date. “We will be able to start booking on March 10 for patients born in 1946 and earlier,” he added. “Age limits for booking will decrease one year for each day past March 10. For example, those who were born in 1947 can start booking on March 11, those born in 1948 on March 12 and so on; this is to decrease the pressure on the phone and internet systems.” Seniors can still book with AHS and if they have received an ap-

pointment with them, they should continue on that path, according to Erickson. “Emerging evidence indicates that the booster dose should be administered in about a fourmonth timeline, and doses received at the pharmacy will be rebooked for follow up at that time,” he stated. “Since limited vaccine is available, we urge residents to book ahead; we will not be accepting wlkins. We are very excited to be part of the initial rural portion of the vaccine rollout. “With many seniors unable to make the trip to an AHS facility, we’re happy it is available in Tofield. Of course, we have to remember that the limiting step to this rollout will be vaccine supply and we will be booking as it becomes available!” Erickson said that he has been asked a few times about the efficiency

Masking and social distancing will continue until we reach a safe herd immunity which we think will be 70 to 80 per cent immunization.” The vaccines that are being used are either dead viruses or mRNA vaccine. According to Erickson, neither vaccine can integrate into our DNA. Increased size of phase studies allowed this vaccine to be developed very
