Tofield resident heads to National Junior High Rodeo Finals MOUSH JOHN Editor
Tofield’s Brooke Busenius is headed to the National Junior High Rodeo Finals in Des Moines, Iowa and will be competing in poles and ribbon roping. She was placed fourth in both events for the Provincial Finals held in Nanton, and missed her opportunity to come in the top three. As part of the District 2J, Busenius placed second in poles and third in ribbon roping. The other events of note were barrels, where she placed fourth; 11th in team roping; and 12th in break away. As a 14-year-old, Busenius takes nothing for granted and practises with her horse Whitney regularly at the McDougall Arena, just east
of Ponoka. Her horse is self-trained by her, is all Canadian bred and comes from a long line of cowbred horses. “I started riding properly at the age of five, but ever since I can remember, I’ve been around horses and have loved the sport of rodeo, and all its events,” she said. “I’m quite competitive, which is also why I love it so much. What’s amazing is the rodeo community – tight-knit and warm. They are like my second family! “My trainers are Christine Drisner, and Jill and Dallas McDougall.” Busenius is a popular name in the rodeo circuit around Stettler, where a lot of the smaller jackpots are held. “I got back from Thorsby and will be headed to the Nationals soon, around mid-June.”
