After being postponed once, Tofield School Grad Class of 2021 was finally able to celebrate their graduation with their friends and families at the school gymnasium on Friday, June 18.

There were 25 graduates who walked the stage, and each student was allowed to bring two guests, keeping the numbers down to within the required one-third of the Fire Code occupancy of the gymnasium.

The ceremony began at

3:45 p.m. with ‘O‘ Canada’, and was followed by the introduction of dignitaries and videos.

Tofield staff Melissa Korpan emceed the event, and the valedictorian for this year was Laura Chute.

Canada Day festivities and Sodbuster Rodeo to go ahead Moush John Tofield Mercury

The province’s decision to move ahead to Stage 3 on July 1, has brought in a lot of flurry within the past few days.

One such being the

Town of Tofield hosting some of the Canada Day activities, and a delayed Sodbuster Rodeo.

“There wasn’t enough time to organize a parade, however we will be hosting a few events on Canada Day, including

fireworks,” said Vanita Eglauer, Recreation/Facilities Coordinator. “We won’t be having a Pancake Breakfast either, but there will be other activities such as the gymkhana, a market, including an Open Houseat

the Tofield Museum, among other events.”

Alberta passed the 70 per cent vaccination threhold to move the province to Stage 3 of reopening, which means indoor social gatherings will once again be allowed and there will be no limit on the size of outdoor events.

Restaurants, bars, and retail outlets will once

again be able to run at full capacity. The provincial mask mandate will also be lifted but masks will still be required in some settings, and anyone who tests positive for COVID-19 will still have to quarantine.

In Tofield, the events start at 10 a.m., which would include a Museum Open House.

CW Sears says goodbye to Principal Coykendall Moush John Tofield Mercury

After six years of her journey with CW Sears, Principal Emily Coykendall will be leaving for a more comprehensive role at the Battle River School Division office in Camrose.

“In my new role as Division Literacy Principal, I will be supporting teachers in the development of literacy skills in our young learners,”

Coykendall said. “I hope to work alongside teachers and assist them with choosing and using resources and using the science of reading for instruction. I am looking forward to this opportunity!”

Coykendall said taht when she first started here in Tofield, it was a big change for her as she had transitioned from a fairly big school with three times the number of students and staff.

“It was a challenge that I thoroughly enjoyed, and as I look back, my fondest memories are having the opportunity to work with a great staff and community but mostly the fun I had with students.

“I love the little kids

and the funny conversations, little stories, and insights they’ve shared.

Teaching art is my specialty and I loved my time creating with the kids.”

Whether it was painting rocks or filling up the corridor walls with stu-

dent art, Coykendall’s penchant for art can be seen everywhere.

Council Corner Town of Tofield encourages citizens to run for council in Oct. Every four years marks the cycle for elected Municipal Governments. Given this, 2021 sees an upcoming local election for the positions of Mayor and Councillor.

The date for the 2021 election will be October 18th. With recent changes to Local Authorities Elections Act, nominations can now be submitted, up until the date of September 20, 2021, at 12:00 noon Mountain Time. Completed nomination forms are to be submitted to the Returning Officer at the Town of Tofield Administrative Offices.

Now, what does it mean to be an elected official? It means you believe in the democratic process for your community and for those that

you serve with as an elected official. It means that you believe in the greater good for Tofield and not your own personal gain or agenda.

It also means that you believe in making a difference and are not opposed to making difficult unbiased decisions driven by logic as opposed to emotional responses. This in itself is not an easy task.

Being an elected official means you have time to commit to the position. There are Regular Council Meetings held the second and fourth Monday of each month.

Each Councillor is also required to sit as a member of Boards, Commissions or Committees. Each member typically sits on a mini-

mum of three of the aforementioned. Each Board etc. will require the necessity for meetings which are typically held in the evenings.

There is also a responsibility to engage in these meetings and to be prepared in reviewing material ahead of time. Therefore, the monthly requirements of an elected official can certainly vary based upon meetings, material review and other engagements which may arise.

Now, although monthly time dedication, meetings etc. may sound daunting, I can assure you providing a service to the community is extremely rewarding. Serving the community for the greater

good and making a difference is at times humbling but must be done with both passion and grace.

The public hearing will be held on Tuesday, July 6 at 6 p.m. via video conference. You are invited to join the public hearing to express your views.

The purpose of proposed Bylaw No. 2021-949 is to amend Bylaw No. 2020-936, the Land Use Bylaw of the Village of Ryley as follows:

On June 15, Tofield RCMP responded to a fraud complaint in Holden. RCMP arrived and found that someone had reported to be from Publishers Clearing House and that in order to claim a prize, a sum of money was required to be sent. The complainant refused to send any money and immediately reported this incident to police.

On June 15, Tofield RCMP responded to a theft complaint in Holden. RCMP were advised that construction equipment was stolen from a new home build in the area. This file is still under investigation.

On June 16, Tofield RCMP responded to a theft complaint in Beaver County. RCMP arrived and it was alleged that tenants had stolen property while staying at the residence. This file is still under investigation.

On June 16, Tofield RCMP responded to an abandoned vehicle in Beaver County. RCMP attended and located a stolen motorcycle from Edmonton. The motorcycle was seized and the owner contacted.

Loose Ends: Mixing It Up!

Kellogg’s has teamed up with an outfit to make vending machines that mix cereals together.

Users can craft their ultimate cereal blend of different brands, milk and

dairy options, topped with fruits, nuts and seeds, called Bowl Bots.

There are 22 options in all. But if cereal creativity isn’t your thing, choose one of their seven preprogrammed options.

Since the Bowls are located only in two American universities, leaving it up to most of the general public to create their own mix-ups at home, one can’t help but wonder if Kellogg’s ultimate goal is to increase cereal sales. But let’s pretend that they are simply try-

ing to offer students a healthy alternative to Almond Mounds and Spicy Nacho Chips.

Actually, concocting my own Bowl Bot at home sounds like fun. It would certainly allow me to control amounts so I wouldn’t end up with Frosted Mini-Wheats over powering the other ingredients. First to come to mind are Count Chocula, Fruit Loops and Honey or Peanut Butter Cheerios, but it’s been a long time since I cereal shopped so there are un-

doubtedly a lot that I don’t know about. Do they still make that Strawberry Shortcake cereal? Or anything with cheese or baconflavoured? I see a shopping adventure in my future.

Currently the only box I have in the house is multigrain Cheerios which I decided I liked better than Cornflakes, Rice Krispies or Special K, all of which turned soggy just at the mere thought of adding milk. There are several toppings I could add –

dried cranberries or blueberries, maybe some candied pineapple or mango; raisins, coconut, walnuts and chocolate chips. Trail mix. Cashews left over from Christmas. (LOL. There are never any leftover cashews; that was a test to see if you were paying attention.)

A while back, Hubby brought home a big bag of dates, ‘just because.’ I think he intended it as a change from the dried cranberries I asked for. I haven’t added them to my cereal yet, only

munched them as snacks.

I’m saving them for the oatmeal muffin mix, purchased because there was no bran muffin mix, with raisins or plain, on the shelves. Another Covid compromise?

So far the closest I’ve come to creating my own ultimate cereal blend has been pathetic – dried cranberries and pineapple tidbits on my Cheerios – the pineapple carefully drained, of course. A blended breakfast shouldn’t include soup.

June 18, Dustin Lyslo was charged with the following: 1. Fail to comply with provision of a Protection Order. Dustin Lyslo was released on conditions and is scheduled to appear in Vegreville Provincial Court on July 12.

On June 17, Tofield RCMP responded to a harassment complaint in Beaver County. RCMP spoke to the complainant who advised that they have been receiving harassing communications from unknown persons. This file is still under investigation.

On June 17, Tofield RCMP responded to a fraud complaint in Tofield. RCMP attended and the complainant advised that they had recently purchased a vehicle although when

attempting to register the vehicle, found that there was no proper Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) attached to the vehicle. This file is still under investigation.

On June 17, Tofield RCMP responded to an assault complaint in Beaver County. RCMP arrived with EMS and located the persons involved. One person was transported to the Tofield Hospital for assessment. This file is still under investigation.

On June 18, Tofield RCMP responded to a harassment complaint in Beaver County. RCMP spoke to the complainant who advised that they have been receiving harassing communications from known persons. This file is still under investigation.

On June 19, Tofield RCMP responded to a

robbery complaint in Ryley. RCMP attended and spoke to the complainant who advised that they had attended a rural location while delivering goods and in the process, was assaulted on scene and the items delivered were stolen.

This file is still under investigation.

On June 19, Tofield RCMP performed a traffic stop on a suspicious vehicle in Tofield. RCMP located the vehicle and arrested the occupant, Tyler Peters (37) of Lamont County and on June 20, Tyler Peters was charged with the following: 1. Possession of a weapon dangerous to the public x 3; 2. Possession of a controlled substance x 2; 3. Possession of property obtained by crime; 4. Possession of break-in instruments; 5.

Failure to comply with conditions of release

order x 6. Tyler Peters was held for a judicial hearing, was released on conditions and is scheduled to appear in Vegreville Provincial Court on July 5.

On June 20, Tofield RCMP responded to a 911 complaint of a domestic disturbance in Beaver County. RCMP arrived and arrested Brandyn Pope (26) of Ryley and on June 21, Brandyn Pope was charged with the following: 1. Assault. Brandyn Pope was held for a judicial hearing, was re-

leased on conditions and is scheduled to appear in Vegreville Provincial Court on July 19.

On June 20, Tofield RCMP responded to a complaint of mischief to property in Tofield.

RCMP attended and

spoke the complainant who advised that they believed that someone has entered their property in the past and has possibly shut down their motion sensor lights and surveillance. This file is still under investigation.

Busy Spring Season MLA JACKIE LOVELY Camrose Constituency

The countdown is on! I am so excited by the recent announcement by Premier Jason Kenney and Health Minister Tyler Shandro. In case you didn’t hear the news, we will move into stage three of our reopening plan on Canada Day. That means virtually all public health restrictions will be lifted. We can gather with our friends, eat at our favourite restaurants, and live our lives as we choose. I want to thank you all in the Camrose constituency for doing your part to bring us to this exciting point.

I wanted to share some questions my office has received regarding inter-provincial travel as well as those seeking proof of vaccination. In terms of Saskatchewan, that province will drop most restrictions on July 11. For British Columbia, at the time of writing this article, our neighbours to the west are in stage two

of their re-opening plan. I checked their government’s website, and it indicates that BC will be open to out-of-province visitors in stage three of its plan. If you are thinking of heading out of Alberta, be sure to check the rules in whatever province you are visiting. I was also asked about proof of vaccination because some constituents are hoping to travel out of country.

The health ministry indicated to me this is a federal issue and the Federal Government is working on it.

One of the major highlights from this past session was the passing of Bill 66, the Public Health Amendment Acts.

This legislation strikes the right balance between protecting the health and safety of Albertans during public health emergencies and maintaining the rights of individuals.

modernize and strengthen the Act and allow for greater public transparency during public health emergencies.

• The government repealed the Public Health Emergency Powers Amendment Act, sections of the Public Health Act, and updated existing provisions; • Removed the power of ministers to modify legislation by order; • Enhanced the rights of individuals and added checks and balances on authorities; • Modernized the

act to reflect current and emerging public health challenges, such as chronic illness; • It also eliminated mandatory vaccinations. While our government encourages vaccines, we also believe that this should be the choice of Albertans.

Additionally, I had the pleasure of speaking to, and supporting Bill 72, the Preserving Canada’s Economic Prosperity Act. This bill empowers our government to restrict the flow of oil and gas into neighbouring jurisdictions in response

to attempts at blocking international exports. We do not want to use this legislation; however, Alberta will not be bullied and I think if our country is going to benefit from our oil and gas industry through equalization payments they should be supporting the industry, not trying to block or undermine it!

Some have asked what my plans are for the summer and that is a question I am thrilled to answer. As we reopen, I will continue to travel through our beautiful Camrose

Constituency highlighting all the great stories, businesses and community organizations that make ours one of the best places to work and play in all of Alberta. “The province’s ‘Open for Summer Plan’ promotes that all restrictions can be removed for events beginning July 1, so we hope we’re able to return to a near normal event,” Eglauer noted.

“However, should the Alberta Health require maintaining any restrictions or recommendations to safely host the events, we will of course follow them.”

The Rodeo Slack is on Saturday, Aug. 7, starting at 10 a.m. The rodeo performance will be on the same day at 4 p.m.and the second performance will be ont he following day, Sunday, Aug. 8 starting at 1 p.m.

Kylie Kuflay appointed as Tofield Summer Program Coordinator Moush John Tofield Mercury

Former Tofield School student, Kylie Kuflay is this year’s Tofield Summer Program Coordinator.

As a first year student at the University of Alberta’s Elementary Education Bachelor’s program, Kuflay thought that the opportunity was an excellent one to help her gain experience and also do something she loves during summer.

“I knew that I would want this position because in 2019, when I did work experience at C.W. Sears School with three

Grade 2 classes and one Kindergarten class, it was a gratifying experience. I loved seeing the smiles on kids’ faces when they created something new or saw me outside school and said hello.”

So far, she has planned the program for the months of July and August, and has enjoyed planning scavenger hunts.

“There are many components in scavenger hunts that kids from the program’s two age groups can enjoy, and there are ideas online that have greatly helped me through the process!” she explained. “I have also

enjoyed making some of the crafts I have found to determine if they will be easy for the kids to create or not. Additionally, I have made playdough and some additional items to make the days more enjoyable for everyone.

“I look forward to meeting some more kids from the community and working towards making an enjoyable summer that they will love!”

Kuflay is excited and honoured at the same time to organize a program for kids who have had such a crazy year with online school and COVID restrictions.

“They deserve to have a summer they can be excited about and tell their families and friends about or just something that can help create a summer for all the kids aged four to 12 who missed out on a proper summer holiday last year,” Kuflay added.

“The kids deserve to make new friends over summer because the pandemic had limited the social interactions that many kids could have had this past year. They will also be able to bring home crafts and mementos to remember this summer.”

Her main focus is to

plan and ensure that the activities she engages them in are fun, and that there’s a lot of activities, and it’s a place the kids can look forward to coming to each day.

“We won't be sitting around all day, but instead, we will be going outside to play games or improvising and playing games indoors if it rains.

I also have many crafts planned that the kids could take home and display proudly.

“I do have some field trips in the planning process as well, and it was challenging to plan with the COVID restrictions since many places were

Kylie Kuflay. temporarily closed. But now that the final phase for the ‘Open for Summer Plan’ has been announced, field trip planning is in full swing, and I hope to have at least three field trips for the kids to enjoy this summer!”

The Town of Tofield Summer Program will be starting on Monday, July 5, for kids aged four to 12.

ciety. “The Tofield Historical Society acknowledges the financial support from Claystone Waste Ltd. and the Wild Oats and Notes Music Festival.”

Narrating the history of how Tales of Tofield came about, Taylor explained, “The communities mentioned were primarily identified by the school districts of Amisk Creek, Anderson, Hastings Lake, Ketchamoot, Lakeshore, Lindbrook, Mackenzie, Spilstead, and Woodlawn.

“In the 1950s, when the County of Beaver, now known as Beaver County, was incorporated, these rural schools became part of the newly created county. While Anderson (now called Bardo Recreation Center), Spilstead, Hastings Lake, and Lindbrook no longer exist as school districts, the residents of

these areas maintain community halls and an active social life.”

According to Taylor, Schultz and Phillips were assisted by Esther Anderson, Joan Banack, Fay Dodds, Rita Halverson, J. R. Francis, Floyd Irwin, Neil Phillips, Elizabeth Rains, Mildred Watson, and Daisy Young.

“No doubt there were many others who assisted by contributing their stores and talents,” she added. “All their cumulated efforts resulted in the 1969 publishing of Tales of Tofield, a history that coversTofield’s history from the late 19th century to the middle of the 20th century.

“As the Tofield Historical Society began setting up the Tofield Museum in 1997 in the Beaverhill Lake Nature Centre, the public began to express an interest in acquiring a copy of Tales of Tofield.”

Taylor noted that by 2004, Trafford Publishing of Victoria, BC reprinted the book. This reprinting was possible by the tremendous work that Barbara Conquest (daughter of Grace Phillips and Neil Phillips), was able to complete.

“Incidentally, the book committee of Barbara Conquest, Elizabeth Hubbard, and Diane Reil, with the assistance from many contributors, updated Tofield’s history with the publishing of Tales of Tofield 2,” she said. “By 2018, the Tofield Historical Society had sold the last copy of Tales of Tofield.”

As the society continued to get requests for this history book, the society’s book committee under the leadership of Taylor and Lorraine McNeely undertook the task of getting this history book reprinted.

Council looks to fill interim CAO position

With Beaver County’s Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) Bob Beck going on sick leave until September 30, the county decided at its county council meeting June 16 to hire an interim CAO. Reeve Jim Kallal wrote the following statement June 22 on the CAO issue: “On June 15 CAO Beck informed me that he would be off on medical leave until Sept 30. It was the majority of Council that felt an interim CAO should be sought.

Yesterday we reviewed two applications for the interim position and could not resolve with a unanimous vote. I have called another special meeting for this coming Friday.

“CAO Beck’s health issues are unknown and protected under the privacy act and free-

dom of information. We are now coming up on municipal elections and these next few months are going to put extra pressure on our administration and the unknown future of a CAO is concerning to all of Council.”

A discussion took place during a closed session of council on June 16. Afterwards council formally agreed to hire an interim CAO until September 30 based on a motion by Deputy Reeve Gene Hrabec.

That motion was passed with Reeve Jim Kallal (Division 2), Hrabec (Division 3) and Councillor Dale Pederson (Division 5) in favour; opposed were Councillors Kevin Smook (Division 1) and Barry Bruce (Division 4).

Council met June 21 in a special closed session to discuss hiring one of two applicants.

Hrabec made a motion to hire

an applicant which passed 3-2 but was not unanimous.

Bruce and Smook both gave reasons at the June 16 meeting as to why they opposed the hiring of an outside interim CAO. At that meeting, Bruce favoured Assistant CAO Margaret Jones taking over the CAO’s role for the interim period.

“Margaret is the Assistant CAO,” he said. “She has full knowledge of the issues in our county and has the ability to step in and take over, which is part of her job description.

“If we bring in an interim (from the outside) we will have to pay extra,” he said, noting “finances in the county are very tight and the ratepayers wouldn’t like it.”

Smook said the initial hiring motion on June 16 “lacks meat” as the cost wasn’t spelled out, the person wasn’t named and

there were no parameters set out for hiring guidelines.

“We are blessed in Beaver County to have a quality assistant CAO who has been with us for many, many years,” he said, “and has perfectly compatible knowledge to help out during this period of time.”

Hrabec answered these objections by stating that “the intent is also to have a fresh set of eyes,” that can look at the county’s internal operations for council.

Kallal said the need for an interim CAO was more of a “time issue.” The county “is running into an election (in October),” he said, and Jones also acts as the returning officer for these municipal elections, which this year will include the addition of a referendum and school elections.

Pederson agreed, stating he didn’t want to put undue pres-

sure on the assistant CAO, stating she has “other duties.”

During the hour long plus initial closed session June 16, one applicant met with council to discuss the interim position.

“There’s lots of unanswered questions,” said Smook in public session, stating the public deserved to know the parameters of the position, who was being hired, and how much it is going to cost the taxpayer.

When the county met again on June 21, council held a special closed session meeting before passing the motion in a split vote offering the position to a candidate at a cost of $5,000 per week.

However, council will hold yet another special meeting on Friday, June 25 to further discuss the issue, with Kallal offering the explanation that the previous motion was not unanimous so needed to be revisited.

Weight restriction goes back on RR124, council replaces oil/cold mix with gravel Patricia Harcourt After meeting with two residents who live on R.R. 124 on June 2, Beaver County Council put back the 75 per cent weight restriction on the road.

The road lies in Division 5, and councillor for the area Dale Pederson said he spoke to Muriel and Dave Hill who are objecting to changes proposed regarding the road, fearing the road’s deterioration.

Pederson told council he believes the couple understands that the county’s public works is not going to tear up the road, “and the county will try to keep dust control up.”

Also, the road is going into the five year road plan, although “a little more time” was needed to deal with the issue since the road plan isn’t being addressed again until the fall.

Deputy Reeve Gene Hrabec (Division 3) asked if administration had followed up and looked at the road agreement referred to by Muriel Hill at the last meeting. If an oil contractor was making short cuts to get to a destination faster that could mean the company is “going against the agreement,” he said.

“If so, I would be in favour,” he said, of the county’s proposal.

Director of Transportation Dan Blackie said he was “out of the loop” because he missed the previous meeting when the Hills were present. He asked if the road ban was now going to be lifted because “I know the road will deteriorate and instead of adding oil we would add gravel.”

To that, Councillor Kevin Smook (Division 1) said that

other municipalities have truck routes telling trucks where they have to travel, “otherwise they get a ticket.”

“Absolutely there is, there are designated truck routes in other municipalities,” replied Blacklie, noting that “the logical way is to go south on the 490 and cut across to the (Hwy.) 36….That would be my designated truck route if we had one in the county.”

Hrabec suggested keeping the 75 per cent road ban on until the 124 is covered in the road plan. “I would be okay to putting the bans back on until we have a chance to review it.”

Pederson made a motion to put the ban back on from Twp. Rd. 490-492 on R.R. 124 until next spring and let the council then deal with the matter.

But Councillor Barry Bruce (Division 4) wanted to go with

the county recommendation two weeks previously to lift the ban on the road. “We can’t check every road,” he said.

“When we get a recommendation from county staff,” he said, council should consider it seriously. “I have to respect that that’s their job and they are giving their best advice.”

He asked “what message this sends to residents,” adding: “It looks like we’re sitting here flipping coins…It looks like we’re running around chasing our tails.

“I think it’s the wrong way to go,” he said.

But Reeve Jim Kallal (Division 2) said that public works “doesn’t have a crystal ball,” noting that in the spring the county didn’t know how much frost was in the ground.

“We had extreme conditions this spring…We did not know

when the frost was coming out and when the rain would fall.”

Pederson’s motion to reinstate the 75 per cent ban on the R.R. 124 passed 3-2 with Smook and Bruce opposing it.

Another motion by Pederson was carried unanimously, and read: That any repairs required for the oil surface on R.R. 124 be done from Twp. Rd. 490-492 using gravel instead of cold mix or oiled surface. Pederson said this would “buy some time and cut some costs” for the county.

Before the vote, Smook asked Blackie for his opinion regarding the use of gravel over oil or cold mix.

Blackie said he “agrees that when you start getting some holes (in the road) you can put in gravel instead of cold mix,” adding it “won’t make no difference to us.”

Three rail crossings to be upgraded to enable whistle cessation Patricia Harcourt Beaver County has agreed to do upgrades to three railway crossings earmarked for whistle cessation in order to enable that to happen.

County Council passed a motion June 16 agreeing to fund the necessary improvements to enable train whistle cessation at the following crossings: Mile 196.7 Bruce Main Street, in the amount of $26,384 Mile 197.16 SH 857, in the amount of $17,984 Mile 232.39 SH 630 (Lindbrook) in the amount of $20,295 As well, council would withdraw the whistle cessation request for Mile 205.14 RR 161. Council also passed a motion that the county will support a letter regarding the CN merger with KCS Rail.

The county will not make improvements to R.R. 161 location due to the cost of over $500,000. This means that particular crossing will be withdrawn as a request for whistle cessation.

Division 4 Councillor Barry Bruce stated he was “certainly in favour of stopping the racket from those (train) whistles,” adding he “never ceases to be amazed at the uncitizenlike behaviour of CN (Rail).” He noted that people who live along the railway line in the county have no choice but to endure the whistles because as farmers they can’t move away from the noise.

“I don’t like one little bit the price tag they put on peace and quiet,” said Bruce, “so I would be in favour of this.” Bruce wanted to poll the residents of Bruce concerning closing the crossing which sits on the middle entrance way into the hamlet.

“It’s a way to save $17,000,” he said, to not keep that entrance open, noting there would still be road access on both the east and west sides of the hamlet.

As for signing a letter of support, Bruce

said he “doesn’t believe in patting the back of multinational corporations,” adding: “I haven’t got the stomach for it.”

Division 1 Councillor Kevin Smook noted that there are municipalities who get their train whistles stopped “without paying a dime,” and mentioned the Town of Viking.

“I don’t know what the difference is,” he said, but asked if these improvements are done the whistle cessation would be guaranteed.

“We’ve been working on this for over three years,” he said, calling it “a great game of tennis.” He agreed the county can’t afford the crossing that costs $1/2 million, and had no opinion on the letter.

Deputy Reeve Gene Hrabec (Division 3) said he was in favour of doing the improvements at the Bruce crossing. “It’s good for the residents of Bruce,” he said.

“Let’s make the problem go away,” he said, saying the intersection should be kept open at Bruce for the benefit of the businesses there.

He also thought that “the relationship with CN has gotten considerably better…

I’ve been very impressed with what they’ve done over the past few years.

“Our council’s done a good job at keeping CN on the straight and narrow,” Hrabec added. “The working relationship is good but could be better.”

Reeve Jim Kallal (Division 2) stated it clearly: “We’re not happy with the train whistles,” but supported the letter backing CN with its merger. Kallal called the bells and whistles used as safety measures at rail crossings “antiquated.”

“It’s still safety,” he said, adding: “These are modern times and there should be newer technology (for that).”

Train conductors should be able to do what the policy demands regarding whistles but “they don’t have to lean on the horn.”

As part of Beaver County’s roadside maintenance program, the removal of trees, brush, and regulated weed species within Beaver County road allowances will be running from May through October 2021.

• Spot herbicide applications will be conducted within all divisions to control tree and brush regrowth within County road allowances.

• Blanket Spraying will be conducted within Division 5.

• Mechanical roadside brush control efforts will be focused within Divisions 3 and 4 (Holden and Bruce areas). The mechanical removal and clearing of trees from County road allowances is targeted at improving traffic safety and machinery movement, eliminating areas prone to the trapping in the winter months and improving sight lines at intersections and yard sites.

• Roadside mowing operations will commence in late June/early July, depending on growing conditions. Roadside mowing will be conducted on all County roads west of Secondary Highway 834, and hard-surfaced roads east of Secondary Highway 834.

• For information regarding weed control, brush control, and haying along provincial primary and secondary highways please contact Alberta Transportation at 310-0000.

Township Road 512 Construction Update Over the next few weeks, Township Road 512 from Range Road 191 to 195, will be upgraded from an oiled surface to an all-weather hard surfaced road. This involves stabilizing the road base with soil cement before applying two coats of “chip seal”. While this process is much different from the process to pave a road with asphalt, the end result will seem similar to residents and the travelling public resulting in a road that is not dusty when it is dry, nor muddy when it is wet.

During this construction phase, portions of the road may be closed to allow crews to work safely please use another route, detours will be posted or be cautious when you need to drive through construction zones (local traffic only). Beaver County's goal is to provide a healthy, injury free work environment for all employees, contractors, visitors and general public. Already this year we have had people exceeding the posted speed limit through our construction zones, endangering staff, contractors and the public.

There are potential hazards to the public and vehicles during the construction process. This can include heavy machinery, dust or mud, road material such as gravel, asphalt coatings and rock chips.

We apologize for the inconvenience that road maintenance and upgrading causes, but the same roads that receive the most traffic also need the most maintenance. Currently we are experiencing delays due to poor weather and vandalism to our equipment. Thank-you for your patience and understanding during construction. Sharon Boese, one of the bus drivers said, “She was awesome to work with and heard us out when we had issues, and that doesn’t happen all the time, and made to feel that our concerns were serious.”

Coykendall said that this past year has been one of the most challenging times for her.

“Having to close the school for COVID was very challenging. Because it happened so quickly we didn’t really have the time to prepare for that eventuality. It was critically important to maintain relationships

with our families and I would say our staff did an admirable job. With several families moving to at-home learning this year, communication was really important. We made sure to contact parents frequently and the feedback we received was very positive.”

Community member and Breakfast Club volunteer Sandy Brolly said, “It’s very sad when you’re losing a good principal, and you’re always worried what’s at the end of the tunnel, but I’ve heard good things about the new principal, so that’s good. But we will miss Emily a lot!”

Whether it was a Grade 4 teacher or Kindergarten teacher, they all reiterated how much they would miss working with Coykendall and all her creativity, which was her “special touch.”

“The most important thing in life is to focus on developing relationships.

If you have positive rela-

tionships everything else will fall into place,” Coykendall added. “Thank you to my students, my staff,

and the school community for supporting me during my time at CW Sears. I’m immensely proud of this

school. As AA Milne says: How lucky I am to have something that makes saying goodbye so hard.”

All the dignitaries who weren’t able to attend congratulated the graudates with a pre-recorded video message.

In her Valedictorian Speech, Chute said, “I know our class has had our differences. But despite these differences, we’ve grown up together.

We’ve spent many lunch hours together, occasionally wandering around and asking if anyone has extra snacks they don’t want. I remember finishing someone’s iced coffee off for them back when sharing straws wasn’t a plague risk. We’ve all seen each other’s milestones: like getting our first job, our learners and drivers licenses, getting our braces on and back off again. School was a huge part of our childhood, and we have all shaped each other into who we are today.”

She continued, “We’ve made so many memories together. I remember getting dressed up for Halloween every year and many of us excitedly

showing off our costumes to the entire school. Then there was our trip to Drumheller in Grade 4.

Truthfully, I don’t remember a lot from that trip, but I do still have the hat. Once, I watched my classmates crawl into a cupboard in Mrs. Nicolaescu’s class in Grade 9 -apparently, I honestly don’t recall when-- and then they were ‘accidentally’ locked inside for the rest of the period. It’s correct to assume gym was never something I enjoyed, and sometimes I would take my sweet time in the change rooms during gym class so I wouldn’t have to join, especially if we were playing basketball that day.”

Finally, concluding with, “As cheesy as I know it sounds, this pandemic has made us stronger as people. It’s been hard, I’m not going to so much as imply that we wouldn’t have been better off without it. But, to look on the bright side, we have learned how to adapt to difficult situations and power through, and we are strong, re-

silient young adults about to start the next stage of our lives.”

Presenting the diplomas were Tofield School’s Principal Janice Muench and Asst. Principal Chad Kendall, while Ms. Korpan read the Future Plans of the graduates.

“What I think is incredibly cool about today’s ceremony is that over half of the graduates sitting here today have already received their official high school diploma in the mail,” Muench said. “For all of the graduates, the act of crossing the stage this afternoon symbolizes all of the hard work and energy that these students have put into their 13 years of schooling, and countless hours of guidance and nurturing from their families. This is a moment of pride for all of us right now: students, parents, families, friends, community members, and the school faculty.”

The afternoon ended with the diploma presentation, and some of the graduates posing for pictures with their families.”
