The Tofield Curling Club hosted the Ladies Bonspiel earlier this month, with the Men’s being hosted over this past weekend.

“The Curling Rink is a facility in the community that has been very active for many, many years and with the hard work and commitment from the members the goal is to carry on with an active club for many more years

of lifetime entertainment for the community of Tofield and surrounding area,” said Mayor Deb Dueck, an avid curler and a part of the organization.

“We encourage family, friends, and community members to participate in any of the ongoing fundraisers.”

According to Dueck, the bonspiels are among the many fundraisers the club holds in an effort to cover the significant costs of operating the Curling Rink.

“It takes many volunteer hours to make all this happen with Board of Directors, League Reps and all the members assisting in one capacity or another.”

Other annual fundraisers that are already in the planning stages are as follows – Grey Cup Raffle; Hockey Pool Raffle – tickets are currently available at the Curling Rink or from any member; Golf Tournament scheduled for Sept. 12, 2020; Casino; Paint nights; and Succulent/annual planter building events.

League curling is held three nights a week. Monday – Mens; Tuesday – Ladies; and Wednesday – Mixed.

Dueck said the club welcomes anyone – new curlers, novice curlers or seasoned curlers to come out and join in the fall for future seasons.

SNOW GOOSE FESTIVAL 2020 It is widely believed there are four methods birds use to migrate from northern breeding areas to southern wintering grounds.

The sun, stars, Earth’s magnetic field and visual landmarks all help to guide birds back to the same spots year after year.

Birds are aware of the light and dark cycles that occur during the day. They also rely on shadows to help them determine direction.

These two elements combined allow birds

to use the sun as a compass. Birds orient themselves according to the position of the stars that help to distinguish north from south. Problems arise when the sky clouds over at night. Bright city lights easily disorient migrating birds, especially songbirds.

Scientists have detected small crystals of magnetic iron oxide within the base of birds beaks and bills. A commonly held theory is that these crystals help the birds respond to the

Earth’s magnetic fields.

While the magnetic poles and geographic poles do differ, it is believed that magnetic fields are just another tool in a bird’s migration navigation kit. To those who have observed migrations, it is apparent that the birds follow rivers, coastlines, ridges and mountains. The type of landmarks used likely vary depending on the altitude of flight.

The birds that migrate primarily during the day are: larger birds like ducks, geese, swans,

cormorants, herons and cranes; fast birds like terns; or birds of prey that rely on upswelling air currents that result from the Earth’s heating during the day.

Many songbirds and poor flying birds, such as coots or grebes, rarely fly during the day because raptors, such as the peregrine falcon, pose such a strong threat to their survival.

On clear autumn nights, you can experience midnight migrations by watching flocks travel across the moon.

Migrating birds and jet aircraft both take advantage of high altitudes to increase performance. During migration, some birds have been detected travelling at 1.5 to six kilometres (5,000 to 20,000 feet). This is well above normal flying heights.

Efficiency is increased at high altitudes, but so is exposure to predators.

This may further explain why smaller birds migrate at night.

Geese and swans,

both of which experience long-term pair bonds of several years, migrate north and south in family groups. Snow geese, white-fronted geese and most varieties of Canada geese remain in family groups througout the winter.

But in brant and cackling Canada geese, young become independent of their parents during their first winter.

In ducks, the family groupings of hens plus young breaks up long before migration ever starts.

Tofield RCMP seeks assistance with crash in the north end of town

Tofield RCMP responded to a total of 35 calls for service in the

past week including eight traffic complaints and two Motor Vehicle Collisions (MVC).

Sometime during the night of Feb. 15 a breakand-enter occurred at Ryalta Industries in Ryley. Suspects used a truck to ram the building and gain access where they were able to steal items from inside. RCMP continue to investigate.

During the early morning hours of Feb. 18, Tofield RCMP received calls from a male expressing that he was going to kill himself. The male was located trying to evade police and EMS on foot in -35 degree Celsius temperature while poorly dressed for the elements.

The male was arrested under the Mental Health Act and taken to hospital for assessment.

On the evening of Feb. 18, Tofield RCMP received several calls for service from the family of a male who was constantly calling and uttering threats towards them.

The family was concerned as the male was going through some hardship and they feared for his well being. The male was located by RCMP and lodged in cells until sober to prevent the continuation of the offence.

On the morning of Feb. 19, Tofield RCMP received a complaint of a

Greg was born on January 15th, 1984 in Edmonton, Alberta to his parents John and Kate. He has four younger siblings, Kristen, Trevor, Ligia, and Carlos.

He worked at CLBI in various roles for seven years and it was during this time that he felt the Lord leading him to consider seminary training.

He married Dena in 2005 and together they have four children, Danyel, Garrick, Jesslyn, and Colby.

In the fall of 2015, they moved to Fergus Falls, Minnesota to start classes at the Lutheran Brethren Seminary.

After graduating from High School, he attended the Canadian Lutheran Bible Institute (CLBI) for two years.

He then worked as an equipment operator in Saskatoon, SK, until moving back to Camrose to work at CLBI.

After graduating in the spring of 2018, Greg accepted a call to serve at Resurrection Lutheran Church where he is currently serving as part of the pastoral team.

suspicious trailer parked on a rural road south of Tofield. The trailer was creating a traffic hazard.

Members attended and confirmed that the trailer had been stolen from Camrose overnight and the owner was able to recover it.

On Feb. 20, staff from the Ryley Post Office

called RCMP regarding concerns of a customer yelling and arguing with staff over service. Tofield RCMP located the female causing the disturbance and issued her a warning as per the wishes of Canada Post.

During the evening of Feb. 20, Tofield RCMP were called to complete a welfare check on a male in rural Beaver County.

Family from eastern Canada were concerned as the male had made mention of self harm and believed him to be a danger to himself. RCMP were able to locate the male and confirmed he was safe and receiving proper care.

Around midday on Feb. 21 RCMP received a complaint of a vehicle stunting in the middle of Tofield. The suspect vehicle was located and the male driver was confirmed to be suspended.

The suspect vehicle was towed and seized for 30 days and the driver was issued a summons under the Traffic Safety Act. During the evening of Feb. 21 Tofield RCMP were advised that a couple had located their stolen trailer on a rural road north of Holden.

The trailer had been stolen the day before from Camrose. The trailer was claimed by the owners.

On the evening of Feb. 22, Tofield RCMP were dispatched to the north end of Tofield where a vehicle had crashed through a fence and into a residential yard. The driver of the vehicle did not remain at the scene and fled from the area.

The investigation is continuing and RCMP are seeking the public’s help and ask anyone who may have witnessed the collision to contact the Tofield detachment at 780-6623353.

While on patrol during the evening of Feb. 22, a member from the RCMP located vehicle in the ditch just outside of Tofield. Subsequent investigation revealed the

driver was intoxicated and they were placed under arrest for impaired operation of a conveyance as per the Criminal Code. The person was released via appearance notice.

Also on the evening of Feb. 22 Tofield RCMP received a complaint of a residential break-andenter. The complainant returned home to find someone had entered her rental property. The complainant believes her landlord inspected inside the residence after missing their earlier appointment. RCMP provided information on contacting the Landlord Tennant Board to assist with mediating her rental issues.

On Feb. 23 Tofield RCMP received a complaint of a stolen license plate and vehicle documents. Investigation revealed the vehicle had been left unlocked overnight.

Also on Feb. 23 RCMP received a complaint of a theft of a generator from a garage in Tofield. Investigation revealed that suspects took the generator when the garage door had been left open overnight. RCMP would like to remind the public to be diligent when locking vehicles and outbuildings as most criminals are opportunists looking for easy targets.

Loose Ends: Adulting

Down south in California, where the sun always shines and Hollywood resides, one of the most popular U of C classes prepares stu-

dents for the responsibilities of growing up, teaching everything from sticking to a budget to cooking meals. They call it ‘adulting.’ Apparently many young people out there have never learned how to decipher nutritional labels or balance checkbooks and perform other ordinary daily tasks that adults take for granted.

I don’t remember where I learned such things, not in Home Economics classes where we all sewed clothes that

didn’t fit and burned tasteless bran muffins that we had to choke down as penance for not being gourmet cooks.

But I couldn’t have been paying proper attention or I wouldn’t have misused my first credit card so badly. Who needed cash when this magical piece of plastic paid for everything? The store said I did; I wasn’t allowed to purchase anything until the card was paid in full and then they cancelled it. I showed them; I stopped shop-

ping in their store.

Remembering that stopped me from wondering where the parents of these spoiled California kids are. Giving them smart phones and plastic that Daddy paid off instead of teaching them life skills on the way to becoming caring, self-sufficient adults? Maybe.

Then I remember the first time my son opened a bank account and discovered that he’d never used his signature. And when he called me to ask how to address and

where to place the stamp on an envelope, I realized that the life-skills classes in high school hadn’t been thorough enough . . . and I’d failed him terribly as his parent. So I can’t be scornful of college kids needing hand-holding to get from young adulthood to the kind of adulthood they need to survive in the real world, hopefully without calling home to mom and dad.

I do question the timing though. College sounds a little late to start

being a grown-up. Surely prerequisites should have begun at home and in high school.

To be grown-up literally means to be done growing up but how do we know when we’re done? And shouldn’t there be a test at the end that certifies us as grownup? I’m old and grey, but am I grown-up? I don’t think so. Like a crow, I’m still drawn to shiny things and succumb to the temptation to pull out my Visa . . . that’s what it’s for, right?

Physician funding framework announcement Jackie Lovely MLA Camrose Constituency

The province is spending $20.6 billion on healthcare, the highest ever in the province and the highest per capita of all provinces. Physician services account for 1onefourth of the overall health care budget. The new framework will prevent $2 billion in cost overruns while still ensuring that Alberta doctors are amongst the highest paid in Canada.

Unaddressed, rising costs will impede our ability to provide essential health services Albertans rely on. We are keeping our campaign commitment to maintain health spending and strengthen our universal, publicly funded healthcare system. Alberta

spends more on physician services than other provinces, yet many system performance measures are below national averages. An Alberta doctor earns approximately $90,000 more than a doctor in Ontario, and physician fees have almost tripled since 2002.

We are phasing in changes to complex modifiers, reducing the rate physicians can charge for this billing code to $9 from $18, for a period of one year before the code is removed in 2021-22.

As large patient loads can contribute to physician burn out and may compromise patient safety and quality of care, the province will implement a daily cap of 65 patients per day modelling after the British Columbia cap. This cap will not

apply to the Constituency of Camrose as we are a rural location.

We value our physicians and the work they do.

New changes to funding model for Alberta schools Minister of Education LaGrange announced important changes to the funding model for Alberta schools. The new funding model for Alberta’s K-12 education system will drive more dollars to the classroom, where they can deliver the best outcomes for students.

This new model will maintain the amount of funding available, but reduce the costs of red tape that take money away from classrooms. This much-needed update to education funding will

increase accountability and invest directly in Alberta’s future generations.

I would also like to let you know about the new opportunities to have your voice heard through government consultation surveys.

Until March 6, Albertans can help identify improvements to Alberta’s automobile insurance.

Is Ottawa at war against Alberta?

A week before the Trudeau Government was likely to turn down the project, and after years of jumping through environmental hoops, Teck Resources out of Vancouver cancelled plans this week to construct a $20.6 billion oil sands project north of Fort McMurray which would have employed up to 7,000 people.

Teck’s reasoning, one we have already discussed here, was Canada’s ongoing debate over climate change policies. This Frontier Oil Sands Mine Project had received federal-provincial approval from the bureaucratic panel which stated it was in the public’s interest for it to proceed. As well 14 different Aboriginal bands around the mine were looking forward to the work,

revenue and prosperity it would have provided them.

Besides the thousands of jobs lost, the government itself will lose up to $70 billion in tax revenue. But apparently this is all okay for the Federal Liberals, as it is just one of many such projects which have collapsed under their watch as they pander to the Climate Change Cult.

Let’s not forget the Malaysia’s Petronas Bhd. which in 2017 scrapped its $36 billion liquefied natural gas export project because of low prices and environmental problems with British Columbia.

The same year under Liberal rule, TransCanada Corp. decided to drop its $15.7 billion Energy East pipeline mostly because of Quebec’s opposition and the Prime Minister’s lack of leadership in finding a way to get it done. The pipeline would have brought petroleum from Alberta to New Brunswick.

Trudeau himself cancelled the Northern Gateway Pipeline proposal by Enbridge, worth over $7 billion.

All told, the Trudeau Liberals have had a hand in destroying around $79 billion just in mega projects and in less than five years.

The hostile business environment they have created has led to an exodus of oil companies relocating to the US, as well as

countless bankruptcies and closures to satellite businesses.

C. D. Howe Institute reported a year ago that from 2017 to 2019 alone, Canada’s regulations and environmental issues have led to the cancellation of over $100 billion in energy projects which were in the works. There were also handfuls of companies, which did not even bother to apply for projects because of the hostile environ-

ment toward business development.

Enter the Buffalo Declaration: Federal Conservative MPs Michelle Rempel Garner, Arnold Viersen, Glen Motz and Blake Richards have put together a 13 page manifesto pointing out the many historical ways Alberta has been excluded as an equal partner in Canadian Confederation. The paper demands several changes in Confederation that

Alberta requires, mostly having to do with its own independence within Canada and recognizing Alberta has its own unique culture.

Albertans continue to look for ways to remain in Canada, while Wexit and separatists lick their chops as Trudeau’s failures toward our province mount. It’s starting to just look like a war by Ottawa to kill Alberta financially.

Letter to the Editor Dear Editor, The recent weather which for the most part has kept me indoors has stimulated and warmed my brain to thoughtmode.

We have resided in Beaver County for almost three years and I now feel compelled to express some personal observations made over these years. Well whatever, I feel the following comments needed to go down on paper.

We moved to Beaver County about three years ago and to be honest, found little to like… at first. However, following two trips to Tofield Health Centre ER within

the first few weeks, we eventually settled in.

It was our desire to support local businesses in Tofield and surrounding area from the very beginning. This in itself has urged the SUBJECT of my letter.

My visits to the Tofield Health Centre ER now total four as of December 2019 and I must extend heartfelt appreciation to the high degree of medical professionalism.

The December incident required Ambulance Service and it has to be said the EMS individuals topped the charts! The on-duty ER Nurse was a joy, going the distance with attentiveness, com-

passion and courtesy. She deserves a Gold Star.

I will not forget the oncall doctor . . . new to me, so very thorough, communicative, confident and true to his word; returning later in the morning just as he said he would plus follow-up early the next week!

A refreshing experience with each individual exhibiting a most welcomed trait...Humor.

That in itself transcends a serious situation into a relaxed one. Kudos to each of you!

As for comeuppances … there are several local businesses to which this definitely applies.

One would think busi-

ness ventures anywhere, and especially those with smaller communities, should understand success depends on courteous, knowledgeable, competent and caring service…Or, why bother?

The complacency, disconnected attitudes, lack of service and knowledge, along with overall discouraging ethics will be the killer. It has been known to happen.

The old adage – once bit, twice shy… I will choose to go elsewhere, Thank you!

We saw it as another great opportunity for the staff and students to come together as a whole school community.”

Korpan explained that the Winter Games was where the students and staff participated in winter activities and games outside in the school yard, and that her Senior Leadership team put a lot of time and effort into all the activities they designed, and ensured the majority of students would enjoy it.

“I think the afternoon was a success,” commented Korpan. “I heard nothing but positive reviews from the staff and students I talked to!”

Students especially loved the hockey station, she said and believes the day was made even better since the weather was beautiful and sunny.

Korpan noted that this event made her realize how much the students and staff are stuck indoors all day, and that the Winter Games was a great way to get the whole school outside participating in fun winter activities.

“I hope that activities like these will encourage more student participation,” Korpan added.

“Events like these can increase school spirit and improve the Tofield School experience!”

Korpan wants this event to continue espe-

cially after watching the excitement in the students as they participated in the Winter Games, starting with the Opening Ceremonies in the gymnasium, and she loved watching them participate in the activities outside.

“Already, I am thinking about next year and what activities we could add to make this event even better,” remarked Korpan.

“I’m wondering how curling could happen outside, maybe this is where we will need the basketball courts cleared of snow!”

Grade 10 and Senior Leadership student Ashlee Warawa also wants this event to continue at Tofield School and noted that the more activities that the school does for the students the more desirable it is to go to school and enjoy their time there.

“We came up with this idea after seeing how successful the Holiday Assembly back in December was,” said Warawa. “We thought since the month of February does not have a lot of events going on we might as well have something fun to reprieve everyone from regular studies for a little bit.”

She continued that of the several games the Senior Leadership Class created her favourite was Biathlon. Luckily, this was the game she and Continued on Page 9

Beaver County Council meeting highlights from the past week The following are highlights from the Beaver County Council regular meeting that took place on Wed., Feb. 19 in Ryley.

Beaver Municipal Solutions – Municipally Controlled Corporation Council passed a motion that Council propose to the Beaver Municipal Solutions Municipally Controlled Corporation Committee that Beaver Municipal Solutions provide a 40-year visionary trust and that a clearer post closure plan be included in the business plan.

Beaverhill Rural Crime Watch Council directed the Beaver County Community Peace Officer (CPO) to contact Provincial authorities to see if Beaverhill Rural Crime Watch decals can be applied to CPO vehicles.

Update of Legal Issues Council agreed to settle with West-Can Seal Coating Inc. as per the discussion in Closed Session on February 19, 2020.

Battle River School Division – School Closures Council approved Cr. Smook to speak as Beaver County representative at the Battle River School Division meeting regarding potential closure and consolidation of Holden and Ryley schools.

The properties are located south of Viking, adjacent to Secondary Highway 615 and Range Road 125.

Bylaw 20-1080 – Strathcona /Beaver Inter-Municipal Development Plan (IDP) The Strathcona County and Beaver County IDP has been developed in accordance with Section 631 of the Municipal Government Act. The IDP project contains policies for land use, transportation and infrastructure, environment, economic and social development, and responsible intermunicipal coordination. The IDP Area extends approximately 800 meters on either side of the Strathcona and Beaver County municipal border.

The project included one phase of public engagement, which took place between November and December 2019. Beaver County and Strathcona County worked together to compile all public engagement input and drafted a public engagement summary which outlines all engagement feedback.

An open house was held at the Hastings Lake Community Hall on November 21, 2019. Council passed 1st reading of Bylaw 20-1080 and will schedule a public hearing.

Bylaw 19-1077 – Tofield/Beaver Inter-Municipal Development Plan On February 10, the Councils of Beaver County and the Town of Tofield held a joint public hearing regarding Bylaw 19-1077 – a bylaw to repeal the existing Tofield/Beaver Intermunicipal Development Plan (IDP) and adopt a new IDP. Council passed second and third reading of Bylaw 191077.

Bylaw 19-1079 – Holden/Beaver Inter-Municipal Development Plan On January 20, 2020, the Councils of Beaver County and the Village of Holden held a joint public hearing regarding Bylaw 19-1079 – a bylaw to repeal the existing Holden/Beaver Intermunicipal Development Plan (IDP) and adopt a new IDP. Council passed second and third reading of Bylaw 191079 as amended.

Review of Beaver County Municipal Development Plan A review of the Municipal Development Plan (MDP) has been on the Council’s Action List since 2018.

This initiative dates back to August 15, 2018 when a resident requested that his lot in a multi-lot subdivision be subdivided into 2 lots. Administration brought the item forward and requested clarification regarding the scope of the MDP review.

Council deferred the MDP review until issues regarding Priority Based Budgeting are better known over the next year.

Wainwright/Beaver Inter-Municipal Collaboration Framework Council deferred the matter of Wainwright/Beaver Inter-Municipal Collaboration Framework to a subsequent meeting.

Capital Purchases – Aerial Photos Beaver County obtains aerial flight imagery on a fiveyear cycle. The current imagery data set on the GIS platform is 2015. It is recommended as a best practice to acquire photography in early spring (snow and leaf-free imagery). The timing of the flight project is to be completed by the third week of May. It is therefore recommended that Requests for Proposals be sent out much earlier for any successful vendor to start and complete the work by the third week of May. Council passed a motion to defer a decision on the matter to a subsequent meeting to allow time to compare technology costs of various aerial mapping options.

Beaver Municipal Solutions Wetland Assessment & Impact Report – Landfill Beaver Municipal Solutions (BMS) owns and operates a sanitary landfill in N ½ 10 and W ½ of 11 in 50-17-W4.

BMS is proposing to expand the landfill into SE 10-50-17W4.

A wetland assessment and impact report has been prepared to identify and classify wetlands impacted by the proposed expansion and develop mitigation measures to minimize and avoid wetlands.

Council directed Administration to invite Beaver Municipal Solutions representatives and staff engineers to a subsequent Council meeting to explain the report to Council in more detail.

2020 Budget and Priority Based Budgeting Process Council reviewed changes to the 2020 budget, and reviewed the 2021 – 2024 road construction program.

Level of Service – Pest Control Policy Council approved Pest Control Level of Service Policy.

The amended Policy removed any reference to the Beaver Bounty Program and there is an addition that Beaver County Council will address intermunicipal issues related to beaver control or flooding on a case by case basis.

Council also approved a new Overland Drainage Policy. This policy addresses the level of service for licensed water management projects within the County, and establishes that: • The County will maintain the areas of licensed watercourses which lay within County properties and road allowances.

• Areas of licensed watercourses which are located on private land will have no maintenance provided by the County unless there is an imminent threat to County infrastructure.

Beaverhill Rural Crime to host information sessions Moush John With a spike in rural crimes, the Beaverhill Rural Crime Watch (BRCW) will be hosting a series of ‘Meet with the RCMP’ sessions, followed by other informational meetings in the near future, hoping to get more members involved in this community initiative. “We are concerned about the crime in our towns, villages, and rural areas and would like to get more members involved,� said Sheila Lusk, secretary/treasurer at BRCW. “Our annual general meeting (AGM) is on Monday, March 23, and we are looking to fill up four director positions on the board.�

Starting in March, Lusk said there will be two ‘Meet with the RCMP’ sessions.

One in Bruce on March 3 at the Seniors Centre, followed by one on March 9 at the Holden Seniors Centre.

As they begin to put a structure in place for the information sessions, Lusk spoke about the Property Identification Information Session where attendees would be encouraged to make a list of their property and to mark their property. “We will encourage action by providing stats for property crime in the Beaver County area, explaining why property identification is important, providing information about ways to inventory and track assets, and providing a list of resources for additional information,�

Lusk stated.

Among the presenters would be –

RCMP local detachments, and representatives form the K division; insurance industry representative; and representatives from property marking product companies. “Our hope is that the RCMP local detachments will be touching upon why it is important to mark property; give a property crime stats for Beaver County, for instance, numbers for last year, trends, property recoveries; and discuss about the Canadian Police Information Centre,� Lusk explained. “The RCMP K Division will speak about current and emerging technology that is available to mark and track property, such as apps, software, and tracking devices; they will provide an update on the Lock it Up initiative – success of the TRACE pen promotion, and their plan for providing detachments with scanners.�

Lusk added that there would also be a discussion about the repeat victim initiative, with an Update from Jennifer Kees of K Division. “We’d like to know if are there repeat victims in the Beaver County area, and the K Division would also discuss assessment of repeat victim’s properties and examples of advice they provide regarding property identification and how to reduce risk of repeat break-ins, what have been the program successes, and the factors to consider when determining which tools would best suit their needs,�

Lusk said.

The Beaverhill Rural Crime Watch AGM is on Monday, March 23 at the Ryley Legion Hall commencing at 7 p.m.

Beaver County to partner with Agroforestry and Woodlot Extension Society for Shelterbelt and Eco-Buffer workshop Moush John Beaver County is partnering with Agroforestry and Woodlot Extension Society (AWES) to provide local landowners with a Shelterbelt and EcoBuffer workshop on Tuesday, March 10. “As a result of increased interest in Alberta in the past several years for shelterbelt management, Beaver County is taking this initiative,� said Beaver County Agricultural Fieldman Aimee Boese. “AWES will provide the professional expertise for landowners interested in either rejuvenating the shelterbelt they have, or planting a new shelterbelt or eco-buffer on their property.�

According to Boese, Noel St Jean and Ian Cameron will emphasize the importance of maintaining field shelterbelts, wetland buffers, and other wooded areas and will highlight benefits to ecosystem health, biological diversity, and crop yields. “We will also highlight some of the economic benefits of maintaining tree cover on your properties,� Boese added. “Whether its one row, or an entire quarter section, AWES will highlight options for numerous situations, and will work with landowners to identify issues on

their land base and how to solve them.

Even if you aren’t ready to make any changes today, AWES will provide the tools and resources you may need for planning into the future.�

Landowners can contact the County or AWES ahead of time if there is a particular topic of interest that they would like to hear more about.

Topics to be covered will include establishment, maintenance and follow up care, tree insect and disease identification and management, and health assessments – tailored to be specific to Beaver County conditions and issues. “Staff will come prepared to make recommendations on peak times for planting, species that will do well in your area, and how to ensure the longevity of your shelterbelt,� Boese stated. “Funding opportunities available province wide will be discussed too, and AWES staff will fill attendees in on what services they can provide for all of their planning and planting needs. Come prepared with questions and an eager mind.�

Workshop participants will visit a local shelterbelt to apply assessment strategies learned in the workshop, and will complete a design and maintenance plan for their property.

Holden Seniors appreciative of BMS grant Members of the Holden Senior Centre wish to sincerely thank Beaver Municipal Solutions for the grant money received to upgrade the lighting at our facility.

This grant helped finance new LED lights replacing the old florescent lights.

These new lights have made our Centre so much brighter and we anticipate seeing a reduction on our power usage.

Concerned letter to MLA regarding school closure threat Dear Editor, This is what we have to say as a community regarding the BRSD school closure and changes in our communities, and have drafted this letter to our local MLA Jackie Lovely.

The Battle River School Division (BRSD) has tabled a motion to “consider relocation of Grades 10 to 12 from Ryley School, and consolidation of Holden and Ryley schools into one school site, serving students in Kindergarten to Grade 9.� This announcement has come as a shock as we have had no prior engagement or sharing of the details that lead to this motion being tabled.

Passing of this motion will have lasting impact on our families, our communities, and our economy.

Our children and youth need strong advocates for quality rural education. We as parents are asking you as our MLA to advocate for investment in your rural Alberta students. This is a crisis. Closing schools and increasing bus times is a huge burden to place on our children.

We ask that our government commit to specific actions that will close the gap between rural and urban education. Regardless of where families work and raise their families, we want to ensure that students can access the education that will prepare them to lead our communities, government and economy.

We understand that there is a program that is in place to reduce the strain on rural schools with fewer students.

This funding is appreciated but, as the current challenge with Battle River School Division highlights, rural schools continue to struggle to maintain quality education.

Dramatic increases in insurance premiums and electricity

costs are two of the issues that we have heard are behind the current decisions to close our school and bus our students out of the community.

Beaver County is a county full of innovative, entrepreneurial and forward thinking leaders who have invested in infrastructure that has attracted industry to our communities. Our schools and their extracurricular activities are important for attracting employees for those industries. The enrolment at our schools fluctuates with the economy and this current downturn has been particularly hard.

We need a system of funding that buffers our communities during economic downturn, maintaining the needed infrastructure to support families and rural economies when things improve. We understand that rural student numbers are down now, but with the optimism returning to our province and the leadership now in place, we feel that it is worth holding on just a little bit longer.

Attracting young families is vital to maintaining investment in our rural economy and our ability to respond to industry needs.

We look forward to a response from you and trust you will bring the needs of your rural students and communities to the attention of the honorable Adrianne LaGrange, Minister of Education.

We appeal to your ability to communicate the larger vision of what is at stake when a rural community loses a school, and our need for increased provincial support for rural schools. Our communities are worth the investment!

Request for Proposal 2020 Contracted Landflood Control Services Beaver County is now accepting proposals for Contracted Landflood Control Services to fulfill a commitment required to address current beaver removal and Landflood control needs on municipal lands and public infrastructure within the County for the 2020 season.

The subject land is located west of Tofield, south of Township Road 510, and adjacent to Range Road 205. The municipal address is 50503 L Rge Rd 205.

County Council has scheduled a public hearing to hear arguments for and against the proposed amendment to the Land Use Bylaw and proposed waivers of the Municipal Development Plan.

Tofield School Winter Games Continued from Page 8 two other classmates decided to run together during the Winter Games.

“We all as a class came up with a couple ideas on our own,” explained Warawa. “So in the end we had snow sculpting and snow painting, Biathlon, hockey, Alpine Skiing, Cross Country Skiing, and more.”

Once everyone had a handful of ideas the class voted on their favourites and then each person was assigned a game to help run.

“This is a really fun and exciting event that has a little bit of something for everyone to enjoy,” remarked Warawa.

Grade 8 student Kadence Senft believes that this was a very fun event although it was a little tiring from all the running they had to do for each game. Like Warawa, Senft’s favourite game was the Biathlon.

“I really like running for the Biathlon and racing against another team to throw your ball through

the hoop at the end,” said Senft.

Senft noted that she really enjoyed the opening ceremonies for the event as well. She remarked that it displayed school spirit and united the school through friendly competition.

“Every team had created their own flag for the event,” laughed Senft.

“Some people even came into the gym with chants, it was really impressive and a fun set-up for the rest of the afternoon.”

Senft said that she could not think of anything to change for this particular event. However, she commented that a Summer Games in June could engage even more students especially since that is when everyone will be wanting to go outside to enjoy the weather.

“This was a really fun way to get outside of class and be a little more active,” concluded Sneft. “I hope it continues for many years and keeps making students laugh and smile as much as it had that day.”

Tofield Atom 1 wins Zone 7 banner, headed to Provincials Moush John Tofield Mercury

It was quite the weekend for Tofield Tier 3 Atoms who won the first round playoffs against Onoway, and went on to beat Chauvin Atom by a huge margin 25-4, winning the Zone 7 banner.

Hudson Lungal (#16) got to his 100 points as well.

“We put our team down to want to play in Provincials, which is different from league play; we had to play three rounds in what they call

‘playdown games’ against other teams in our zone and the team that finishes on top wins their zone banner and for us that is Zone 7,” explained Head Coach Rene Girard.

Tofield Atom1 are now headed to provincials, which will be held in Bowden the weekend of March 19-22.

Girard said that most of the team’s success was attributed to their improved work ethic and teamwork.

These are some of the results from the Northern Alberta Interlock Minor Hockey League games held recently.

Tofield Tier 3 Atoms won their first round playoff series against Onoway after two wins last week. At Onoway on Feb. 18, Tofield won a 9-4 game. The teams were tied 3-3 halfway though the game but Tofield took control at that point.

Hudson Lungal had a 7point game for Tofield (4g 3a). Other scorers were; Cale Helfrich (2g), Declan Girard (1g), Cace Hart (1g), Everett Zilkie (1g), Lane Dehid (1a), and Jaxon Turdel (1a).

Lane Dehid got the win in goal. On Saturday at Tofield Arena, the home team won a 5-1 game.

Hudson Lungal got a hat trick, while Logan Suchy and Baylee Roberts added singles. Assists went to; Declan Girard, Mason Jeffrey and Merek Fritz. Everett Zilkie got the win in goal.

Tofield Tier 6 Atoms lost a two game playoff series against Fox Creek over the weekend. On Saturday at Tofield, the home team lost a 9-8 game. On Sunday at Fox Creek the home team won 7-5. On Saturday at home, Tofield dropped a 7-3 second period lead and allowed six unanswered goals before get-

ting to within one with 3:02 remaining. On Sunday, Tofield fought back to tie the game three times but lost the close 75 game. Scoring for Tofield over the weekend were; Jonas Teefy (6g), Colton Munson (2g 3a), Gabriel Thorson (3g 2a), Steven Cardinal (1g 1a), Braydo Crawford (1g 1a), Logan Kropp (1a), and Carson Kroeker (1a).

Tofield Tier 5 Peewees lost a 6-5 home playoff game against Camrose on Friday, then dropped an 11-1 game on Saturday in Tofield against Onoway.

goals, with Ayden Bremner getting one. Kyson Fitzner picked up three helpers. On Saturday, Nicholas Tooke scored Tofield’s only goal from Caleb Wenger. Tofield played its third consecutive game on Sunday when Thunderstars Tier 5 Peewees won a 5-4 game at Forestburg Arena against Tofield. Tofield had the lead three different times in the contest including heading into the third period up 4-3.

Noah Brady of TS scored the tying goal with 11:31 remaining. The teams exchanged chances as the seconds ticked down but the game went to OT where Coy Hays of TS scored the only shootout goal. Scoring for TS were; Fredrick Szott (2g), Parker Scobey (1g 1a) and Noah. Jeremy Hansen stopped 42 shots for the win. Tofield’s next scheduled playoff round game is on Sunday at Westlock.

Tofield Tier 3 Bantams split two games over the weekend in their playoff round games. On Saturday Tofield won 6-2 at home against Barrhead.

Seth Sideroff and Brody Van Engelen both scored twice, while Connolly Mozak and Evan Suchy got singles. Assists went to; Derek Liptak, Kevin Bartsch, Davin Codd, Hudson Stephen, Christian Amirault, and Lukas Turnbull. Daniel Zander got the win in goal stopping 37 of 39. On Sunday at Camrose, Tofield lost an early lead but tied the game at 3-3 late in the first period before allowing the final three goals of the 6-3 loss. Brampton Jennings (1g 1a), Connolly Mozak and Seth Sideroff scored for Tofield. Assists went to; Lukas Turnbull (2a), Davin Codd, Ethan Turnbull, and Brody Van Engelen. Tofield plays this Saturday at Wabasca.

Tofield Tier 4 Midgets lost both their games over the weekend against Battle River. On Friday

Tofield was shuout 4-0 at the Sedgewick Rec. Centre. On Sunday on home ice, even though Tofield’s Bryce Hunt (#13) from Kien Yuha (#3) scored, opponents equalized in the first period, scoring twice in the second, beating Tofield 3-1. No goals were scored in the third.

Goalie Dawson Koch stopped 47 out of 50.

Tofield’s Landon Van Engelen got two assists in his Northern Alberta Xtreme Elite 15 team’s 4-1 win at Okanagan on Saturday. The team won 6-1 on Friday at Okanagan but Landon was not in the lineup. On Sunday Landon got another assist in his team’s 6-1 win over Pursuit at Okanagan.

Tofield’s Emmytt Yurkowski, playing Peewee AA with Strathcona (20-3-2), broke his collarbone during play at the Alberta Winter Games.

Emmytt was a high scoring and important player for Strathcona before being injured earlier in the season. He recovered, only to get injured again and now will lose the ability to take part in playoffs and provincials this season.
