The Pancrepfle Supper at the Bardo-Lutheran Church in Tofield, which has been an annual staple on the fundraising calendar drew around 100 people from the community on Saturday, Feb. 1.

“All the proceeds from

this event will go into the building of the hospital in Nebaj in Guatemala,” said Lynne Langager, who was one of the main organizers, along with her husband Pastor Kevin Langager and the committee. “We’ve been hosting this for more than a decade, and had a lot of people helping us; and

besides a great supper, we also raised funds by selling items from Guatemala.”

Parish members, Sijmen and wife Hennie Bosma are headed to the construction site on Thursday, Feb. 6, and they will be helping with various children, youth, and adult groups.

Snow Goose Festival in April Moush John Tofield Mercury

After 17 years, one of Tofield’s popular events, the Snow Goose Festival is set to make a comeback in April this year.

“A festival like this is important because it’s an opportunity especially for the urban public, but even the country folks to learn more about wildlife, to be introduced to it,” said Geoff Holroyd, one of the main initiators and organizers of the event and Chair of the Beaverhill Bird Observatory (BBO). “As we become more of a technological society, we become disconnected from nature, but nature has really a beneficial impact on our health; we joke at the BBO that people should come out and get a dose of Vitamin N! A lot of people don’t know how to do that anymore. They don’t realize that tens of thousands, even hundreds of thou-

Holroyd’s hope is by taking people out on buses, having expert guides on those buses to tell them about the water

fowl they’re seeing, identify them – and it won’t be just geese but lots of water fowl that are migrating at the time – he can pique their interest in wildlife and nature.

“There was a lady who came up from Arizona in the 1990s because she had heard about the festival, but she actually came here by bus, and spent all those hours because she wanted to see the spectacle that was right here in our backyard,” narrated Holroyd. “Another couple that I met in November, first got introduced to birds by coming out to the festival in the 1990s, got hooked and have been birdwatching and plantwatching ever since.

So people just need that introduction, that hook.”

According to Holroyd, the festival would be a “pebble in the shoe,” which would compel people to stop and pay attention, and give them an opportunity to see for themselves the beauty in

nature and how important it is to connect with it.

“When people spend more time in nature, they become more aware of their surroundings, they become more aware of their environment, and the broader environmental issues, they become more aware of their impact on the world,” Holroyd explained. “We’re now seeing the impact of plastics on the oceans, carbon emissions, and other things that impact the environment, so all these broader issues become even more meaningful when people have had personal experiences; and see what’s out there, they can appreciate it, and also they can better understand their impact Continued on Page 12

of the Tofield RCMP detachment to enquire about a restraining order. She stated that she was assaulted when leaving the Sherwood Park Court House on Jan. 7. The female was provided with guidance in the process

by Beaver County Victim Services Unit.

On Jan. 30, Tofield RCMP received a request for a well being request for a female who had not been seen or heard from in a month. The female has not attended her work or answered her phone during this time. Members attended the last known rural address for the female. She was found in good health with no issues noted.

Loose Ends: What the heck are flurries?

The problem with warming trends at this time of year is they play with our minds so that even seeing phrases like

‘freezing rain’ and ‘snow flurries’ in the four-day forecast fails to snap us back into the real world.

In the real world we need to remind ourselves that it is too early for spring in Alberta, that Groundhog Day has just happened and that pudgy little ball of fur either saw his shadow or didn’t. So by now you will know that either spring is just around the corner or we are headed for six more weeks of winter – which puts spring’s arrival on

In its 22nd year, the Quint Tournament was won by home team Ryley Rebels Sr. Boys as they beat Hay Lakes 83-71.

After seven years, it was “sweet victory” for Head Coach Brent Anderson and his boys.

“The Sr. Boys program has won it one other time in 2012 – coincidentally enough also against Hay Lakes on a buzzer beater 3 to win by 1,” Anderson said. “The team has had some competitive stretches over the past few years; they went to provincials in 2012 and had a very competitive team in 2015 and 2016.”

Ryley defeated Tofield in their first game, winning 110-41. Colby Anderson had a triple double with 34 pts, 14 rebounds and 10 assists; Dylan Fuller had 19 pts and 17 rebounds; Logan Oslund had 11 pts; and

Cole Hellekson had 10 points with 11 rebounds.

In their second game, they beat Wainwright High 100-75 with Colby scoring 29 pts with 7 rebounds, 7 assists and 8 steals; Dylan Fuller had 13 pts and 13 rebounds; Wes Redman had 12 pts; and Evan Hunt 11 pts.

Ryley beat New Norway 70-58 in their third game. High scorers were; Colby Anderson with 36 points including hitting 6 - 3 pointers on 8 attempts, and 14 rebounds; Logan Oslund had 10 pts and 7 rebounds.

Who needs the help of a fat varmint looking for his annual 15 minutes of fame for that?

I live in the middle of a block, so do I look east or west in search of spring?

That’s one of several questions that need answering. Like, why isn’t ‘freezing rain’ called ice since that’s what it becomes once it hits the sidewalks I’ll do a pratfall on? And just what the heck are ‘flurries’? I pic-

ture them as snow sent skimming across the ground by the wind but more likely it means a few spotty snowfalls that leave a light covering on the ground, too thin to be called a blanket or even a sheet.

Maybe Granny’s antique crocheted bedspread – looks good but the pattern has too many holes, making it useless for hibernating.

And why aren’t ‘temps’ spelled ‘tempts’ since that’s what they do. Cold

temps tempt us into hibernation with thoughts of putting a permanent hitch in Old Man Winter’s britches. Warm temps tempt us with promises of melted snow, trees budding and robins chirping. Cabin fever makes you think and say crazy things and ask silly questions. Some people burst into show tunes.

Honest. Look it up.

Personally I can never remember which way the groundhog’s shadow works. But really, why

should we believe a critter that spends his winters underground anyway? We’ve had weird weather since back in July and even now our temperatures are going up and down faster than a championship yo-yo.

One wonders if the forecasters get bonuses for keeping us guessing.

And why have I just written 400 words of mostly utter nonsense?

Well, if it brightened your day just a little, my work here is done.

The vehicle was towed for further processing.

Tofield RCMP received a call from the Alberta Treasury Branch in Ryley.

The clerk reported that a male attempted to cash a forged GST cheque with questionable ID. The clerk requested additional ID at which point the male left the bank in a black F350 truck. The plate on the truck – 48N282 – was confirmed as stolen out of Wainwright. This file is still

under investigation.

While on patrol in the Holden area, a traffic stop was initiated with a vehicle with a burnt out light.

The license plate on the car did not match the vehicle. The driver was not able to provide valid insurance, registration, or a bill of sale. The driver of the vehicle was charged

Scammers vs. scammers

There is a Kijiji scam that seems to be so popular, that scammers are actually competing against scammers for the right to attempt to steal our money.

Last week I was trying to sell my Dad’s Louis L’Amour collection on Kijiji, and was astounded when I had five or six responses in about a half hour. I was naively thinking, is $800 enough?

The “buyer” asked me to please hold the books, and would even pay me an extra $90 if I would. The “buyer” also requested that I take the ad down. At the time I didn’t realize this was a scam, and that the “buyer” wasn’t really concerned about someone else buying the books – the scammer was concerned that some other scam-

mer might get to me first.

A certified cheque was in the mail I was told, and it should be arriving in a day or two. Incredibly, the next day FedEx delivered a cheque for $2,750 to the house and I received an email from the “buyer” asking if the cheque arrived.

I didn’t think it had, because the total wasn’t the $890 I was expecting. Plus this cheque’s origin was from Wichita Falls, Texas instead of Edmonton. Huh? The bells and whistles were already going off, but when the scammer told me to go ahead and cash the cheque and they would send a company to pick up the eight boxes of books . . . Ding . . . ding . . . ding . . .

I considered going to the bank to see if this cheque was even certified, but instead I went to the RCMP station to see if they knew of such a scam.

They did. In fact it was the third report that day.

At that point I did-

n’t really know what the scam was, until they asked me if I had cashed the cheque yet. Sitting in the waiting area at the RCMP office, I emailed them back that I had, indeed, cashed it.

“Good,” the scammer said. “Now could you please place the difference between the $2,750 and the $890 into an online money transfer.”

Ah! It finally clicked. While waiting

for the scammer’s cheque to clear (which it won’t), the “buyer” want me to put the $1,860 from my account into their account electronically.

That wasn’t going to happen and while I was filling out my RCMP crime report, a guy came over and asked me about my complaint.

“Did I hear you say a person wanted you to sell them something on Kijiji and then they sent you a

cheque for way more than what you wanted?”

“Yeah,” I said.

“That just happened to me,” he said. “I was selling a coat.”

When scammers waste my time, I waste theirs, so for several hours I played along that I had cashed the cheque.

Then I told them that I had transferred them the money.

When they said they didn’t get it yet, I reassurred them that I was

trying to pay them.

Finally, I informed them that they had contacted a member of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and that I am working in conjunction with the Texas Department of Public Safety and that they should expect a visit very soon.

BRSD to host public meeting in Holden on Feb. 10; future of Ryley & Holden school communities hang in balance Moush John and Patricia Harcourt Tofield Mercury

Battle River School Division (BRSD) Board passed several motions on Jan. 23 that will set start a process to consider closure and consolidation of schools in Ryley, Holden, Round Hill, and Hardisty.

At the moment junior/senior high school students from Holden and area are bused to Ryley, a Grade 7-12 school, and elementary students from Ryley attend the Grade 1-6 school at Holden.

The board is considering relocating the Grade 10-12 students at Ryley but haven’t specified where they would go.

The Grade 1-9 students at both schools would then be consolidated on one school site, which po-

tentially could be either at Holden or Ryley. The board did not state which school would be chosen for that purpose and which would be closed.

However, BRSD’s Director of Communications Diane Hutchinson provided some clarification.

“It means the board is considering consolidating Holden and Ryley into one K to 9 site, but they have not yet determined which site it would be,” she said.

“Now that the idea has been brought forward for consideration, there will be a review of information about each of the Holden and Ryley school sites - building condition, lie expectancy for infrastructure (roof, boilers, etc.) - that will help determine which would be the better choice.”

For most parents this

means a looming uncertainty, which affects much more than just the school communities, said Lind Hunt, a Ryley parent who has two children attending the Ryley School.

“It’s incredibly frustrating to be in limbo till the board decides what to do, because tied in with the decision is not only how to arrange for transportation and other details, but our kids’ activities,” Hunt explained. “It is a burden to the parents in the community, especially those who have younger ones and who rely on their older kids for babysitting; the decision will impact both Ryley and Holden communities economically too.”

It was a celebratory weekend for Tofield’s Mary Brown as she turned 100 on Sunday, Feb. 2.

“Our weekend started with a family dinner on Saturday, followed by friends and neighbours coming to wish her on Sunday, and finally her floor curling friends on Monday,” said her daughter Lynn Gates, who is the oldest of Brown’s three children.

“We also had our brother and his wife from B.C., and our sister from Fort McLeod visiting, besides her grandchildren and great grandchildren from all over the province, and nieces and nephews.”

Speaking about Brown’s life in the community, Gates said, “Mom has always had a great attitude and posi-

tive outlook about everything, and she loves people, which keeps her so involved and engaged.”

“When she moved to Tofield from Kelowna after our father died, she was living independently in an apartment here, and then one day she comes over to my place for coffee and announces that she was ready to move to the Lodge!”

Gates – who is a Tofield resident herself – said that the community has been a “blessing” not only for her mother, but for her family too.

“Jan at the Lodge is a wonderful person, and my mom just loves how she takes care of everyone; but we’re very happy too, not only with how everything is with mom, but what a beautiful community Tofield is,” Gates stated. “We are just happy and very appreciative of the people in the community and at

the Lodge, and how well they take care of each other!”

Last year’s enrolment figures in 2019 were 118, down 18 students in one short year.

slightly, from 98 in 2017 and 2018, to 92 as of last September. Of these respectively, there were 52 high school students in 2017, dropping to 44 in 2018 and 35 in 2019.

“The high school number for the second semester this school year is expected to be 30 students,” said Hutchinson.

“We’ve been considering a wide range of actions that will help us address our budget shortfall. And we've been listening to our stakeholders’ input online consultation process.

“There are a lot of difficult decisions to make,” he said. “We have to put all options on the table for consideration.”

Between now and Thursday, March 19 when the board will make a decision on the closures and consolidations, the school division will put together information on the implications and share this with those at the public meetings. People can also write or present their own opinions on the matter to the board. And the board is warning that this is only the start of other possible changes that could be made within the next year.

In December, the school division’s reserves were used up to prevent reduc-

tions in staffing or charging fees for services to parents. But that will change for the upcoming school year in September 2020, the board said. With no more reserves to fall back on cuts to services are anticipated.

More than 900 people answered an online public consultation forum between Dec. 13 and Jan. 10 on ways to balance class sizes and provide maximum student opportunities.

The board provided a list of responses in order of the number of people proposing it. They included: closing or combining schools, increasing technology use, considering a four-day school week, adjusting school attendance boundaries, reducing professional development days, charging fees and others.

Ryley and its sister school in Holden already operate on a four-day modified school week.

There are about 90 students at the Ryley School at present.

Quint Tournament Continued from Page 5 “As far as preparing our team goes, we do nothing special practice,” anderson added. “However because it is our home tournament as a coach it is easier to motivate the players because they want to do well in front of their home crowd and community; the size of the tournament and the amount of host schools is what differs from most tournaments.

Many that we go to either have six or eight teams where it is all in the same gym or at least in the same town.”

The Quint tournament is similar to one other tournament that Ryley Sr. Boys also won this year which was the 16-team Ice Breaker tournament hosted by Daysland and Forestburg earlier on.

According to Anderson, the tournament

started originally as an eight-team boys and eight-team girls tournament in Ryley and Tofield. For the first 10 years the same format was used to get some more of the top 1A girls’ teams in the province, with the girls’ tournament expanding to 12 teams, then 16, and finally then 20.

“As we grew as a tournament, the number of communities that started to host also increased; so Hay Lakes became another host, and so we became Tri School, and then when we went to 16 teams and 20 teams we added Bawlf as the fourth host school and it became the Quad School tournament,” Anderson explained. “And now with the addition of New Norway as the fifth host, the tournament is called the Quint Tournament!”

RCMP warn of Reeve addresses RCMP the dangers of Police Funding costs and fatigued driving service delivery Patricia Harcourt Beaver County Reeve Jim Kallal sent a letter to Minister of Municipal Affairs Kaycee Madu Jan. 16 asking that collection of the new police funding levies be deferred.

The problem of rural crime was highlighted along with the costs associated with the county and other municipalities having to pay for increased police services.

On rural crime, Kallal stated: "This problem has grown significantly in recent years and it is great to see the province taking some action to help all residents and business owners in Alberta."

However, he then spoke of the province's new policing policy, designed to hire 300 more officers to combat the problem, which creates funding demands on smaller municipalities at a time when linear revenues have dropped.

Kallal said the county could adjust in a normal tax year to the tax increase, although it would be difficult; but not with the current problem of unpaid taxes, mostly by oil and gas companies, which is set as a $1.6 million to $2 million loss this year out of county revenues of $13 million.

"Our concerns are with the impact that this new cost will have on our residents," states Kallal.

The county will have a tax increase starting at .85 per cent this year and ending in a 3.4

per cent increase in the fourth year of paying for police services.

"We understand that you are making difficult decisions, and so is Beaver County Council," states Kallal. "We will adjust accordingly but we would like to emphasize that this is a new cost we can't afford right now."

With the increase in funding local municipalities have to pay, the county is concerned the detachments in Tofield and Viking won't be allocated any new "boots on the ground in the near future."

"Beaver County Council doesn't represent the towns of Tofield and Viking, or the villages of Ryley and Holden, but for the purposes of policing, it is one region," said Kallal.

"The RCMP provides excellent services in our region without borders."

In year 4, the funding from

all these local jurisdictions including Beaver County, is about $650,000, which Kallal said could be equivalent to four full time police positions.

That assumes a budget of $165,000 per position.

"If we could see 3-4 additional officers in our area coinciding with year 4, I believe we may feel better about the increased cost to our residents," writes Kallal.

"However, we have doubts that we will see those extra officers in year 4, or for some time in the distant future."

With collection for 2020 police funding deferred until the following year, Kallal requested that the province "delay implementation of police funding collection (billing) unless and until such time as the service is delivered to each individual municipality in Alberta."

Alberta RCMP are warning the public to be more aware of the dangers of fatigued driving.

Like alcohol, fatigue impairment slows reaction time, decreases awareness, impairs judgment and increases the risk of being involved in a collision.

Lack of sleep is one of the most common causes of fatigued driving.

People who are most at risk for fatigued driving are shift workers (irregular work schedules), commercial drivers, people with untreated sleep disorders, teenagers and young adults.

Recognizing the symptoms of fatigued driving can help prevent these collisions.

Driving after going more than 20 hours without sleep is the equivalent of driving with a blood-alcohol concentration of 0.08 per cent.

Some believe that drinking coffee, chewing gum, or rolling down the window will help reduce drowsiness however this is inaccurate.

Warning signs of driver fatigue • Constant yawning.

• Inability to keep your eyes focused.

• The urge to rest your head on something.

• Having wandering,

disconnected thoughts.

• Driving and not remembering how much time/distance has passed.

• Drifting between lanes, tailgating, or missing traffic signs.

• Not being able to keep a consistent speed.

How to reduce driver fatigue • Before heading off on a long trip be sure to get a good night’s sleep.

• Don't travel for more than eight to ten hours a day.

• During your breaks walk around and stretch to get some fresh air.

• If you have a passenger that is eligible to drive, share the driving wherever possible.

• Don't drink alcohol before your trip.

• Avoid working all day and then driving all night. Stay the night rather than driving right through.

• Stop if you become sleepy while on the road.

“Drivers who are fatigued are more likely to be involved in a collision and put other road users are risk” says Cst. Chantelle Kelly.

“It Impacts driver’s attention and alertness and may lead to driver error.”

LETTER Alberta Municipalities facing a monumental challenge Dear Editor: "You can't wring money from a stone." That was the response Premier Kenney provided when asked by the Rural Municipalities Association for help with a massive shortfall facing their members.

According to the RMA, oil and gas companies owe about $173 million in property taxes to rural municipalities.

This comes after the province sliced property tax assessments for shallow gas producers by 35 per cent last year. That will continue this year.  This comes after the Alberta Government trumpeted the addition of 300 RCMP officers in a "partnership" between the province, Federal Government and rural municipalities. The problem is that the province isn't providing any money. Instead they are downloading the cost to municipalities. It is unclear how many new officers will go to each detachment. More money doesn't necessarily mean more boots on the ground.

Larger centres won't feel the pinch of additional policing costs, but they will be heavily impacted by a 48 per cent increase in the amount of fine revenue the province takes (it was 27 per cent, now 40 per cent). It's estimated that this will cost the City of Camrose $250,000. Plus the amount of money the province provides municipalities to assist with infrastructure has been reduced as the MSI program is phased out to be replaced by a long term funding framework. This change is being made despite the commitments many municipalities have already made to multi-year capital projects. Alberta's two largest cities, Edmonton and Calgary signed City Charters with the previous government. Those Charters have both been canceled despite the promise by the UCP to keep them in place.

This is not how a province works. Investors don't see a jurisdiction ripping up agreements as a stable investing environment.

Further, the financial challenges municipalities are facing may force some to throw in the towel and dissolve.

The UCP government vowed to work together with municipalities if they formed government. Unfortunately, Municipal Affairs Minister Kaycee Madu has traded barbs in the media on a regular basis with the Mayors of Edmonton and Calgary. There is a better way to make this relationship work. The Alberta Party would build bridges and strengthen relationships to help all Albertans get through the tough times ahead.

Alberta needs a fresh approach.

Extend love to birds, watch them Feb. 14 Show the wild birds some love by taking part in the 23rd Great Backyard Bird Count (GBBC). This year’s count begins on Valentine's Day, Friday, February 14 and continues through Monday, February 17.

Volunteers from around the world count the birds they see for at least 15 minutes on one or more days of the count, and then enter their checklists at birdcount.org.

There is no better time to get involved because we are facing a bird emergency. In a study published by the journal Science last fall, scientists revealed a decline of more than one in four birds in the United States and Canada since 1970 - 3 billion birds gone. In addition to these steep declines, Audubon scientists projected a grim future for birds in Survival By Degrees, a report showing nearly two-thirds of North America’s bird species could disappear due to climate change. Birds from around the world are facing similar challenges and declines. Counting birds for science is one simple action that individuals can take to protect birds and the places where they live.

"In order to understand where birds are and how their numbers are changing, we need everybody's help," says the Cornell Lab of Ornithology's Marshall Iliff, a leader of the eBird program which collects the GBBC data. "Without this information, scientists will not have enough data to show where birds are declining."

With more than 10,000 species in the world, it means all hands on deck to monitor birds found in backyards and neighbourhoods as well as in suburban parks, wild areas, and cities.

"Birds are important because they're excellent indicators of the health of our ecosystems. Participating in the Great Backyard Bird Count is one of the easiest and best ways to help scientists understand how our changing climate may be affecting the world’s birdlife," says Chad Wilsey, interim Chief Scientist for National Audubon Society. "All over the world people are paying more attention to our environment and how it's changing. There’s a lot of bad news out there, but in

just 15 minutes you can be part of a global solution to the crises birds and people are facing."

During the 2019 GBBC, bird watchers from more than 100 countries submitted more than 210,000 bird checklists reporting a record 6,850 species–more than half the known bird species in the world. Bird count data become more and more valuable over time because they highlight trends over many years, apart from the normal short-term fluctuations in bird populations.

"At times, we can feel like there’s little we can do on environmental issues," says Steven Price, president of Birds Canada. "The Great Backyard Bird Count gives all bird enthusiasts a chance to help, as well as a great opportunity to include family and friends of all skill levels in a common conservation effort. Go out, have fun, and take heart that you are helping birds and nature!"

Tofield’s Snow Goose Festival making a comeback this year Continued from Page 3 on the world.”

The festival was established as a celebration of spring bird migration, an opportunity for nature enthusiasts, bird watchers, and interested members of the general public to view many species of birds that stop at and near Beaverhill Lake on their migration northward.

This family-oriented celebration provided transportation and tours and

hikes around Beaverhill Lake and Beaver County led by naturalist volunteers. In the town of Tofield, a trade fair and numerous activities provided additional options for visitors.

At the time, the Snow Goose Festival was one of the most popular and successful events of its kind in Canada, if not all North America, according to Holroyd.

“An estimated 3,400 people attended the first festival, and over 6,000

people participated in its last year – April 20–21, 2002; the festival ran rain or shine, but participants generally were richly rewarded by the sight of thousands of Snow Geese and other migratory bird species,” Holroyd said.

Local leaders and partner organizations involved in establishing the festival included the Town of Tofield, Ducks Unlimited, Canadian Wildlife Service of Environment Canada, Edmonton Natural History Club/Edmonton Bird Club, Alberta Environmental Protection/Fish & Wildlife, Beaverhill Bird Observatory Beaver County, and Strathcona County, to name a few.

Volunteer guides had an orientation manual for background.

Local businesses, schools, artisans, non-governmental organizations, and the general community provided on-site volunteers, concessions, art shows and displays, activ-

ities, and financial support for the event.

“Held in the Tofield Arena and Curling Rink, the trade show featured 40 displays and live music through the weekend,” Holroyd recalled.

Sixty bus tours carried 2,200 people on one-anda-half, two, and threehour tours to look for Snow Geese, waterfowl and other spring birds.

“Sometimes a brilliant male Western Bluebird was the highlight if spotters could not keep track of moving flocks of geese,” Holroyd added.

“Some bus tours started and ended in Edmonton, several of them catering to inner city youth and families that did not have private vehicles to drive to Tofield. Despite the best efforts of guides and drivers, a few buses became stuck in the soft spring roads.”

The BBO led hikes through the Beaverhill Natural Area that included bird-banding

demonstrations and refreshments.

The Tofield Mercury, produced a free souvenir program newspaper full of interesting articles as well as orientation for visitors.

“Dr. Glen Hvenegaard and his students surveyed over 1,000 participants in the 2000 festival; the majority of them (59 per cent) were from Edmonton, with another 22 per cent from within 25 km of Edmonton. Remarkably, 2 per cent were Canadians from other provinces and 2 per cent were from other countries,” Holroyd stated. “In a festival of 5,000, that means 100 people came from outside Alberta and 100 from outside Canada.One lady travelled by bus from Nevada to Edmonton to Tofield to see the geese and enjoy the festival!”

The survey estimated that 5,000 participants injected $100,000 into the Tofield economy in two days.

“Because most of them

were local, their average expenditure was about $22 per person, and their reasons for attending were varied, including to learn about geese, to be outdoors, and to enjoy a social outing,” Holroyd explained. “Good weather was obviously a key to a successful festival, but with warm buses and lots of indoor activities, the festival was not totally dependent on sunny days in April.”

Years of drought led to reduced water levels in Beaverhill Lake, which in turn resulted in a declining number of birds in the immediate area, longer bus rides to reach them, and fewer accessible viewing sites for this spectacular spring display.

Some of the major sponsors withdrew their support of the festival as staff and managers changed.

Tofield alone was unable to replace the expertise, which led to the decision to suspend the festival after 2002.

These are some of the results from the Northern Alberta Interlock Minor Hockey League games held recently.

Tofield Tier 3 Atoms (13-2-0) defeated Wetaskiwin 5-1 at Tofield Arena on Sunday, outshooting the visitors 2411. Cale Helfrich and Hudson Lungal both scored two goals, with Logan Suchy scoring the other. Baylee Roberts picked up three assists in the game. Other assists went to; Cace Hart, Will Potratz and Jaxon Trudel.

Everett Zilkie got the win in goal.

Tofield Tier 6 Atoms (5-3-1) were scheduled to play two games over the weekend, but neither score was posted at deadline at noon, Monday.

Tofield Tier 4 Peewees (11-2-2) shutout Bashaw 4-0 on Friday on the road.

Sam Stephen scored twice, while Carter Olson

and Parker Stewart-Cantin scored for Tofield.

Ethan Turnbull assisted on two goals, with singles to Kowyn Laschowski, Colben Pedersen and Ty Rude. Jacob Bigney got the shutout win making 26 saves. On Saturday, Tofield beat Camrose 7-1 at Tofield Arena. Kowyn Laschowski scored four times for Tofield. Other scorers were; Sam Stephen (1g 2a), Zachery McFadzean (3a), Parker Stewart-Cantin (2g), Ethan Turnbull (1a), Ty Rude (1a), and Cash Cross (1a). Jacob Bigney made 16 saves in the win.

Tofield Tier 5 Peewees (4-11-0) were scheduled to play Leduc at home on Sunday but no score was posted at deadline, noon Monday.

Tofield Tier 3 Bantams (3-12-4) shutout Slave Lake 12-0 on Saturday at Tofield Arena. Tofield scored seven first period goals in the contest. Seth Sideroff (3g 1a) and Brampton Jennings (3g

1a) both had hat tricks.

Other scorers were; Davin Codd (2g 2a), Lukas Turnbull (2g 2a), Derek Liptak (2a), Christian Amirault (2a), Joshua Swedberg (2a), Connolly Mozak (1g), Evan Suchy (1g), and Kevin Bartsch (1a).

Caden Beaulac stopped all 29 shots for the win.

On Sunday, Tofield hosted Camrose and lost a close 4-3 game. The teams were tied at 3-3 after two, when Camrose scored the winner 3:09 into the third. Davin Codd, Connolly Mozak, and Lukas Turnbull scored for Tofield. Assists went to; Hudson Stephen (2a), Christian Amirault, and Seth Sideroff.

Tofield Tier 4 Midgets (8-8-2) beat Wabasca 15-2 at Tofield Arena on Friday. James Wipf (3g 5a) had an 8-point game, and Jesse Bueckert (1g 6a) had a 7-point game. Charlie Krahn scored four goals and had a 5-point game.

Other scorers were;

Austin Vasconcelos (2g 1a), Kien Yuha (1g 1a), Carter Chomik (1g 1a), Bryce Hunt (1g 1a), Marshal Korpak (1g 1a), Cody Forbes (2a), Brett Holmes (2a), Koyier Cameron (1g), and Daniel Romaniuk (1a). Joshua Whitbread stopped 28 shots in the win. On Saturday, Tofield skated to a 2-2 tie at Smoky Lake.

Tofield had a lead most of the game, but SL scored two in the third frame in-

cluding the tying goal with 55 seconds remaining. Daniel Romaniuk and Carter Chomik both had a goal and an assist.

Cody Forbes picked up a helper as well. Dawson Koch was busy, blocking 49 shots and having a .961 save percentage in the game.

Ryley beat Hay Lakes to win Quint Tournament Continued from Page 8 For Anderson, the biggest thing he has seen evolve is the importance of the 3-point shot.

“So many of the younger players are better shooters than in the past and with the ability to shoot it from deeper than just the normal high school 3-point line,” Anderson noted. “This group has some good talent, but we also had a very good group in 2016 but they only had six players so ran out of gas in many games. The advantage of this group is that we are very deep; each of our Grade 12 players brings different attributes to the table.”

Anderson added that among the players Fuller is very athletic and good scorer; Hellekson anchors the defence with his inside presence and rebounding; Oslund is very long and athletic; while Hunt drives very well to the basket; and there’s Burns, who has an incredible work ethic, shoots the ball well, and has a lot of mental toughness.

“Our younger players are very talented too – Grade 11’s Redman is a knock-down shooter’ Grade 10’s Carter Svenson is smart with his offensive cuts and defensive awareness; and Grade 9's Damien MacLeod, Christian Pru-

den, and Colby Anderson all have the ability to shoot, defend, and pass very effectively,” Anderson said. “They are the core of our junior high team that is 10-0 this year.”

Colby Anderson was named the MVP for the tournament. Anderson has 30.0 points per game shooting 77 per cent from 2, 42 per cent from 3, 80 per cent from free throw line along with 11.3 rebounds, 7.8 assists, and 4.3 steals per game.

Fuller and Hunt were voted as Tournament AllStars.

Selections were made by some of the top teams’ coaches, along with input from officials.
