Ryley’s Sarah Hrabec scores a perfect, makes it to Dean’s List MOUSH JOHN Editor Ryley High School graduate Sarah Hrabec scored an almost perfect 3.99 GPA this semester, making her way to the Dean’s List. Last semester she scored a 4.0 GPA to make it to the President’s List.

Scheduled to graduate this spring from Lethbridge College, Hrabec said, “I was pretty excited to make the Dean’s List considering everything is online.”

Currently attending Lethbridge College in the Corrections Diploma program, she has already been accepted into the Degree of Criminal Justice program this upcoming fall.

“My experience for the most part has been relatively good amidst COVID-19,” Hrabec explained. “It has been difficult not being in the classroom or being able to interact with my classmates, and it’s definitely a lot harder to stay fo-

cused when you are sitting at the computer all day but it’s kinda nice to learn from the comfort of my own home.

“It is definitely a change of pace from the classroom environment, although my professors have been extremely accommodating and helpful!”

Hrabec’s parents – Beaver County councillor Gene Hrabec and wife Carrie Hrabec – couldn’t have been more proud.

“We are pretty proud of her!” Carrie said. “She works so hard on her school work it amazes us!

Last semester she made the President’s List with a 4.0 average, that’s pretty impressive for our Ryley School grad.”

Hrabec is planning on working in the field of community corrections, hopeing to be as a probation officer.

Edward J. Parnitsky Dec. 18, 1935 to Dec. 21, 2020 Ed (Papa) passed peacefully and never suffered as he left us on the night of Dec. 21, 2020. Fortunately, we believe in the other side and when the oxygen started to leave his body I whispered "Dad, run to the light and you will breath again". He opened his eyes and looked off to the left at whoever was waiting for him - smiled and passed on. If anyone has ever had to watch their loved ones lay for days till they pass, you know the relief when they are with their brothers, sisters, mom and dad.

The memories we share of trips to Mexico, Dominican, Canmore and Victoria, Kindersley and Sylvan Lake will live in our minds forever until we see Dad again and relive the moments with laughs and a bump of whiskey. You are an amazing husband, dad and grampa and although we miss you lots, you have already shown us that you are happy and finally eating real food!

Don't worry about Mom. Watch over all of us and keep us safe.

On Tuesday evening, Feb. 2, the Government of Alberta stated in a press conference that it continues to monitor for COVID-19 variants.

A statement released urged Albertans to wear masks in indoor public spaces, practise physical distancing and stay home if unwell to protect others and the health-care system.

Earlier in the month, the province lifted some restrictions allowing hair salons, and tattoo parlours to open, with small outdoor social gatherings being allowed.

Over the last 24 hours,

268 new cases were identified, and there are 556 people in hospital due to COVID-19, including 97 in intensive care.

There are 6,912 active cases in the province still, and to date, 116,259 Albertans have recovered from the COVID-19 virus.

In the last 24 hours, there were 13 additional COVID-related deaths reported – one on Jan. 10, one on Jan. 11, two on Jan. 17, two on Jan. 29, one on Jan. 30, five on Jan. 31, and one on Feb. 1.

Two deaths that were previously counted as related to COVID-19 have been removed from the total number.

The testing positivity rate was 3.5 per cent.

Tofield and Area Health Services Foundation gets new equipment for the hospital Moush John Tofield Mercury

The Tofield and Area Health Services Foundation (TAHSF) was unable to host any fundraiser, according to Chair Brenda Chehade, but despite that they were able to get some new equipment for the Tofield Hospital.

“Fundraising in 2020 basically didn’t happen,” she said. “Our fundrais-

ing events involve large gatherings. Fundraising dinners and donations are usually made in memory of people who have passed, but restrictions have cancelled both of these events, and our books show that the donations are down 92 per cent compared to 2019!

“We remain hopeful, however, and are planning to have a fundraising event for Easter

perhaps.”

The TAHSF was able to purchase new equipment such as PPE organizers for Acute Care; Oxygen Concentrator for Long Term Care; Australian sheepskin bed pads; and short boots and slippers for occupational therapy.

Chehade said that they’re trying to hone in the power of digital landscape to help them get some donations as well.

On Jan. 25, Tofield RCMP responded to a suspicious person complaint in Beaver County.

RCMP arrived on scene and spoke to a male who believed that he saw someone on his property.

The Tofield RCMP responded to 37 occurrences from Jan. 25 to 31, 2021 (inclusive). Also included in these calls for service was four traffic complaints and traffic enforcement provided by

On Jan. 27, Tofield RCMP responded to a suspicious vehicle complaint in Beaver County.

The complainant advised that a dark colored SUV was parked in a parking

lot of a business. RCMP attended and patrolled for the vehicle although it had left the scene.

On Jan. 27, Tofield RCMP responded to a number of complaints regarding a neighbour dispute in Beaver County.

RCMP spoke to all parties involved regarding

issues with dogs at large in the county. Information was forwarded to bylaw to discuss.

On Jan. 27, Tofield RCMP responded to a driving complaint in Ryley. RCMP were advised of a black and green SUV which was driving dangerously in

the community. RCMP identified the vehicle and registered owner and follow-up conducted.

On Jan. 28, Tofield RCMP responded to a residential break and enter in Beaver County.

The newspaper article claimed that my stairs, couch and hallway could transform into a gym for some great home work-

outs. Apparently working up a good sweat in my living room is not only doable but can be as tough as going to an actual gym. I decided to read on. If nothing else it would be worth a few laughs, since the words gym and workouts aren’t in my vocabulary.

They started with the stairs, which was puzzling. My stairs aren’t in the living room but okay, let’s see what sort of total body workout they’ll offer. Stand facing the

stairs, step up, and then down. Stand sideways, lower hips, push butt out behind you, and bend knees. . . . Okay, a total workout huh? Does falling down 12 steps count? That didn’t happen but if it had I’m sure my body would have been totally worked out.

Or I would have been dead.

Let’s move on to cardio, that involved running up and walking down stairs, fast, doing squats at the bottom, and

for a big finish, tap my toes on the bottom step . . . well, none of that’s going to happen. I’m lucky if I can walk down the stairs once, keeping a firm grip on the railing, without taking a nap before going back up. Alright, enough with the stairs already. On to the couchercise part.

I could see the problems right away namely the coffee table sitting where they wanted me to stand and squat with my butt hov-

ering over the cushion or my foot on the cushion, and the rest of my body turning, bending and twisting in several different directions at once.

I may have read those instructions incorrectly – it was difficult to read while turning myself into a gigantic pretzel.

They should call it Ouchercise.

Moving into the hallway . . . lower hips and take a big two-foot jump forward then run backward and repeat. Hop to

the right, and to the left.

Put both hands on the floor, walk them out and then back.

I actually did work up a good sweat though, just reading about it and then collapsing and rolling around on the floor laughing.

A good belly laugh gives you a better total workout than all these body bending exercises and I’ll be just fine once I figure out how to get my knees back the way God meant them to bend.

Oct. 14, 1951 - Jan. 26, 2021 Dennis Frank Fehr of Tofield, Alberta was born on October 14, 1951 to Frank and Emily in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. He passed away on January 26, 2021 at the Tofield Health Center at the age of 69 years.

He is survived by his sunshine Terri Mack; son Corrie; daughter Teri-Lyn (Michael) Ferland; grandchildren Rena, Megan and Jack; brother Alan (Sheryl); sisters Elaine, Colette, Susan (Steve), Corine and Denise; numerous nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Dennis was predeceased by his parents Franks and Emily and by his sister Jeannine.

Due to the pandemic restrictions a private family memorial service will be held. Cremation has taken place and inurnment will take place at the Holy Cross Cemetery, St. Albert.

Memorial donations may be made to the Alberta Cancer Foundation or to the charity of one's choice.

To ghostwrite or not Moush John Editor

Recently I found myself in a heated discussion about how many of the influencers use various ghostwriters to run their channels on their own platforms.

Caught between the traditional and modern forms of journalism, a huge part of me conforms to the view – if your name goes on it, you take the trophy or the backlash as the case maybe.

However, with digital spaces and content marketing being rampant, the average person who is trying to build an audience might not be as savvy with words, and in that case might hire a wordsmith or content expert to craft their message eloquently.

If we look at it from that perspective, does this even count as ghostwriting I wonder.

For me ghostwriting strictly means, you write an article,

and instead of your name there’s someone else’s on it.

As a creative professional fiercely protective of my work, I could never pursue this as a profession, or as a side hustle. I remember cringing to hear some of the papers that would be read in my Master’s program, a clear indication of who had written it, definitely not the one who was reading it unable to pronounce some words and get the intonation right.

Getting credit for my work is important. No matter how many years I’ve been in publishing and will be, to see my byline or photo credit never gets old. It reflects all those hours I’ve put into my craft . . . In fact, for me ghostwriting is unethical, especially academic ghostwriting, which I’ve been asked to engage in while I was in school.

Even now I occasionally get requests to complete papers.

And this for me is no different than plagiarism. Because at the end of the day, I might get a 3.75 GPA, but this isn’t my work.

For me creation, or creative pursuits like writing has the writer’s stamp on it.

Their original voice and style can only

belong to them. If I were to write for someone else, say a financial expert I’m sure I would be “lending” my voice in a way that would end up harming them, because the person for whom I’m writing will find it difficult to replicate my voice, on second thoughts they will never be able to replicate my voice!

I have friends who ghostwrite to make extra money. They tell me that it’s legal, even ethical so I shouldn’t be wasting my thoughts on conscience and authorship.

In fact, some of them enjoy the challenge and get a thrill of imparting their knowledge together with the subject expert’s, giving them a

unique voice that their readers will enjoy.

No wonder I frequently catch myself doubting the credibility of some online rhetorics. I wonder whether what I’m reading is backed by real expertise or is there just some random writer spinning tales together. I guess I will never know.

Letter to the Editor Dear Editor I read MLA Jackie Lovely’s letter in the Tofield Mercury dated Jan. 27, 2021, and I was pleased to see it. I didn’t realize that there was a scheduled event outside her office every Friday and it seems that these protests are NDP functions.

I very much appreciate her attitude towards handling these events and I think she has been respectful, gentle, understanding, and logical in her approach.

Well, I hope they appreciate her words and logic, but I suspect that no matter how she deals with them they will not

respond with the same level of respect or logic, but good luck with it.

From my UCP supporter point of view I thank her for her letter in the Mercury to keep us informed and also urge her to support Tofield Mercury owner, Kerry Anderson, who is also a UCP supporter.

I hope to see her soon at an event, maybe even on a Friday morning, if she is at her office.

County councillors discuss future water supply issues in light of provincial coal decisions Patricia Harcourt Council discussed the recent decision of the provincial government to revoke a coal policy from 1976 that blocked development on some parts of the eastern slopes of the Rockies and tightly restricted it elsewhere and the impacts on future water supplies.

Council specifically discussed the impact this may have on the regional waster supply, which is supplied by Epcor and is sourced from the North Saskatchewan River.

The issue was brought to the agenda

by Division 1 Councillor Kevin Smook, who noted that the former coal policy was revoked and coal leases for the Bighorn area around Nordegg have since been signed.

Smook said his concern was that the headwaters of the North Saskatchewan was where he received water for his home via a water delivery company.

He also noted that “the waterline depends on it,” referring to the Highway 14 Regional Water Commission which services the towns, villages and hamlets along Highway 14 in Beaver County.

“I don’t think we should take this lightly,” he said, adding the issue should be taken up by the Rural Municipality Association (RMA).

“We’re not on the North Saskatchewan but we draw our water from there,” he said, at the Jan. 20 regular meeting of county council. “It all starts in that Nordegg area,” but the county can only advocate without a direct interest.

Division 4 Councillor Barry Bruce agreed that the issue is “on the radar” of organizations such as the North Saskatchewan and Vermilion River ones. However, these types of groups “stay out of political things,” he said, focusing on riparian areas, etc.

“They are reluctant to weigh in at this point,” said Bruce, regarding the coal mine issue, but “they are watching it.”

Bruce expressed personal concern about the buildup of chemicals like selenium and arsenic as a result of coal mining.

“Both accumulate in all tissue of animals, birds and people,” he said. He also noted that there are “thousands of orphan wells that need reclamation.

This (the coal issue) could also end up like that.”

He referred to Flint, Michigan where an employee put toxic water into the city’s water system and sickened many people.

“Here we have an opportunity in Alberta,” he said, to avoid such negli-

gence. “I don’t want my children and grandchildren to pay the price…Yes, there is some tax revenue and some jobs (with the leases) but at what price?”

He said that the most directly affected municipalities “will be bringing this up at the RMA (convention) and Beaver County should decide its stance” on the issue.

“I agree its important,” said Reeve Jim Kallal (Division 2). “Water is a big deal.”

Division 5 Councillor Dale Pederson said the Highway 14 Regional Water Commission was holding a meeting the next day and he would bring the issue up for discussion.

Upon a question from Deputy Reeve Gene Hrabec (Division 3) as to whether the new leases have already been pulled, Smook clarified that this applies only to 11 leases that have been stopped by the province.

“That’s not addressing this particular situation,” said Smook. “We should look into this.”

But Hrabec insisted, stating that the province “cancelled all 11 leases on the headwaters,” of the North Saskatchewan.

Hrabec said he was on the local waterline, and that, “It’s nice to turn that tap on,” adding: “We need to be

responsible in our farming practices not to contaminate the water…We have to be good stewards.”

Then he noted that “Beaver County has the oldest active coal mine in Alberta,” which he hoped “will continue to go down as a major contributor to the county.”

He also noted that, “Canada takes a position on clean energy when other countries buy all the coal they can and burn it.”

Hrabec added that because Canada is one of the coldest countries in the world, “We still need fossil fuels,” to heat houses and drive to work.

“It’s good to go with clean energy but we still need (the fossil fuels),” he concluded.

To that, Smook said he has visited the local coal mine and was not referring to it when speaking of stopping coal mining as a danger to the water supply. “The location is not quite as risky,” he said, calling the local mine “a different type of coal development.

“But we need to have safeguards in place to protect our water source,” he said. “I just thought it was a worthy discussion to have.” He recommended that council “keep our antennae up - it could impact us over here.”

However, the province’s Local Authorities Election Act already stipulates this and is not necessary in the county bylaw.

Jones said the province’s Municipal Affairs Minister amended that Act to expand payment options such as

debit or credit card for this year’s election.

Council agreed to repeal the old Bylaw 685, and gave three readings to the new Bylaw 21-1100, which stipulates the amount of the nomination deposit..

This new Act requires filing nomination papers for elected office in Beaver County to pay no more than $100 as the county has fewer than

10,000 population.

The amount to file has not changed since the old bylaw was in effect.

Division 1 Councillor Kevin Smook remarked that he “like it, it keeps the playing field level,” and he wouldn’t want the deposit any higher.

Council passed all three readings in one sitting to enact the bylaw immediately.

New bylaw for filing nomination papers

Patricia Harcourt Beaver County is gearing up for the 2021 municipal elections in October by repealing a defunct bylaw passed in 1992 dealing with nomination deposits, how they are accepted and when they are returned.

Assistant County CAO Margaret Jones explained to council that the old bylaw dealt with the manner of

County to handle Battle River School Division elections Patricia Harcourt Beaver County has once more agreed to handle the local school division board elections in October.

County Assistant CAO Margaret Jones is the electoral officer for the county, and reported on the situation to county council Jan. 20 at the regular meeting.

Jones said the reason the county can conduct the school board’s election of trustees is that the BRSD school boundaries are exactly the same as the county boundaries.

“BRSD has requested that Beaver County conduct the school board election throughout the county, including within the towns and villages,” stated Jones, in her council report.

“The towns and villages have agreed to partner with the county to conduct the election within their jurisdictions,” she stated. “If the county conducts the school board election for BRSD the vote will be held in conjunction with the voting stations already designated for the municipal election.”

Sometimes no municipal election is held in a particular municipality. One example is if all the candidates are elected by acclamation.

“If no municipal election is required in a division,” Jones said, “a voting station will still be established for the school election.”

She estimated costs for the school board’s share of the election to be $1,000 per voting station for a total of $8,000.

“If a municipal councillor is acclaimed, the fee will be $1,000 or the actual cost, whichever is greater,” she said.

A motion by Division 5 Councillor Dale Pederson for county administration to execute an agreement between Beaver County and the Battle River School Division for election services for the 2021 school board election was passed.

On Jan. 29, Tofield RCMP responded to a suspicious vehicle parked behind a business in Tofield. RCMP attended and found a blue Hyundai Elantra parked behind the business and the vehicle was plugged into the business power.

RCMP spoke to the owner and driver of the vehicle who confirmed that he was having issues with his vehicle and agreed that he would leave shortly. Owner of the business was contacted and advised.

Tofield RCMP responded to a complaint of suspicious persons in Holden campground who may be selling drugs. RCMP attended and patrolled the area for the known persons to be involved in this allegation. RCMP spoke with people residing in the campground and advised.

On Jan. 30, Tofield RCMP responded to a suspicious vehicle complaint in Beaver County.

RCMP spoke to the complainant who advised that a small red car was driving around the rural backroads although nothing criminal. RCMP confirmed the identity of the vehicle and followed up.

On Jan. 31, Tofield RCMP responded to a possible impaired driver complaint at the Tofield Hospital. RCMP attended, located the vehicle and performed an alcohol screening test and

confirmed that the driver was not impaired.

On Jan. 31, Tofield RCMP responded to a suspicious vehicle complaint in Holden. RCMP attended and confirmed the vehicle was recently stolen from Killam. The vehicle was seized and found to contain a number of various equipment and large tools believed to be recently stolen. This file is still under investigation.

On Jan. 31, Tofield RCMP responded to a theft of a motor vehicle complaint in Ryley.

RCMP arrived and found that a dark green 1997 Dodge Ram truck was stolen during the evening and early morning. This file is still under investigation.

Busy B to make Santa’s Workshop an anual event

Tofield’s Busy B ended 2020 on a high note hosting their first ever Santa’s Workshop at the Legion in December.

“We hope to make this an annual event,” said Yvonne Brown, who is the main operator and organizer of the establishment. “2020 was certainly a year of uncertainty, creativity, and innovation for many people and organizations, and Busy B was no exception! The Christmas programs we ran, like the Santa’s Workshop were examples of wonderful teamwork and partnerships.”

Busy B partnered with Tofield Legion for space, as the Legion Hall was turned into “Santa’s paradise.”

According to Brown, all year Busy B saves new items that are donated, ranging from newborns to seniors. These items

are then taken to the Community Centre during the Christmas Hamper program.

“People who receive a hamper get an opportunity to pick up gifts from this selection arranged on several rows of tables,” she explained.

“This is the usual practice but COVID-19 changed this, with the Legion volunteering the use of their facility. And of course, we socially distanced and followed all health inspector guidelines during the event.

“From toys to games, movies, and craft supplies, we had a huge variety. There were also miscellaneous items – Christmas decor, table cloths, books; and clothing for all ages. The Workshop ran over two weeks.”

Brown said she was very happy with the turnout, which served 224 people.

“We had 52 people walk in representing 224 family members; we gave 597 items away; and Santa’s Elves took 55 items. We’re also very grateful for a $600 Lego donation.”

Brown also noted that Busy B would like to give “a huge thank you to the Legion for letting us use their facility for this program.”

Speaking about the many ways in which the community participates in the Christmas spirit, she added that a family in town made a donation of $200 for a Tilly’s dinner for a family in need, and this donation will be made on a semi-annual basis, and in Ryley, a gentleman decorated his entire yard and had Santa visits every evening, and families were free to visit his yard and Santa.

“Busy B celebrates all local, provincial, national, and international holi-

days with special displays, and we encourage our community members to come down and celebrate with us,” Brown stated. “We’re so grateful for all the donations we receive throughout the year, which makes Busy B a vibrant place. But none of this would’ve been possible without our amazing volunteers, so thank you to all of you.”

Birthdays are celebrated at Busy B for all volunteers, and Brown said she’d like to wish all her volunteers born in the first month of the year a wonderful birthday – Bree, Brenda, Josie,
