Former head of the RCMP Musical Ride Fred Rasmussen passes away MOUSH JOHN Editor

A beloved Tofield community member and former head of the RCMP Musical Ride, Fred Rasmussen passed away last month. Rasmussen, who lived with his wife Lorraine in the community was a known face in Tofield and area. Known as a ‘rough rider’ and ‘riding master’, he trained and presented Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II with her famous horse, Burmese. He also had the honour of riding with the Queen around the castle grounds in 1974, during the Ride on a seven-country European tour. Rasmussen grew up on a farm in Denmark during WWII, where he learnt to love horses. Once he immigrated to Canada after the war, Rasmussen joined the Force, and dedicated 26 years of service to the horses and those who rode or wanted to learn to ride.

After his engagement into the Force in 1952 at Edmonton, his first appointment was to Fort Walsh, SK, which was located in the Cypress Hills. From April until midJuly for 13 years, Rasmussen was responsible for the care of the three Force owned stallions and the Foal Breeding Program. The years at Fort Walsh were filled with fond memories for him, which he captured in his book, A Collection of Memories: My Life With Horses. Rasmussen wrote: “It was soothing to one’s mind and soul to see all the cattle grazing on the land, and with my love of horses, it gave me joy to see all the brood mares and their foals, sharing the land with the cattle. In that setting, I found a unique panorama of tranquility, which was so special to the Cypress Hills.” In 1967, Rasmussen was posted to The Musical Ride in Ottawa, Ont.
