Highway 14 Regional Water Services Commission officially inaugurated its new truck fill station in Ryley on Thursday, Aug. 16 with a ribbon cutting ceremony

and unveiling of the sign.

Attending the ceremony was MLA Jackie Lovely, along with various representatives of the Highway 14 Commission and local municipal chairs and board directors.

This project was made possible through generous funding awarded to the Bathgate Water Co-op from Beaver County that was provided to the County by Clean Harbors. Claystone Waste also made a contribution.

Ultimately, it was

agreed that there would be a three-way funding split between Beaver County/Bathgate Water Co-op; Claystone Waste; and Highway 14 Regional Water Services Commission.

According to Hyde, the Alberta government grant, which they received went into surveying and engineering costs, instead of design costs.

“With no more grants materializing, our original plan died,” she

added. “So we resorted to plan B, namely to assist with the upgrade of the Hwy. 14 Ryley facility.”

Bathgate Water Co-op used the funds received from Clean Harbors to contribute to the upgrade of the water fill station, which had been long overdue.

Wondering About COVID Restrictions?

BRSD wants students to be able to return to many of the school activities they have missed. In order to offer sports teams, option classes such as Band / Music or Drama, have assemblies and more, students and staff will be required to wear masks on the school bus, as they enter the school and as they move through the hallways or common areas. Masks can be removed once students are settled into classrooms. Every student and staff member is expected to stay home if they are sick. BRSD will also be participating in the Alberta Health vaccine program, which will bring vaccine clinics to schools, for students 12+ who have permission from their parents to be immunized against COVID19. BRSD will review these practices throughout the school year.

Loose Ends: Heat, Rain, and Hornets

This summer I have not spent any more time on our back deck than it takes to cross from the back door to the stairs

leading to the walk. My reasons are threefold, the first being the uncommon hot temperatures. I hate the cold of winter but also dislike summertime temps over 22 degrees. I read somewhere that plus 22 Celsius is the same as 72 Fahrenheit and 72 is plenty hot for me. Put me outside when it’s over 30 and I melt like a Popsicle left on a car dashboard. Neither is a pretty sight and I’m the stickier of the two.

Coming in at a close second is rain. I don’t like getting wet and neither do the eReader I’d likely be reading or the quilt I may be binding.

And if the rain is accompanied by hail, wind, or thunder and lightning, all of which have happened this summer, look for me cowering in the back of our bedroom closet, just another old shoe under the pile on the floor. The gazebo offers somewhat dryer seats, depending on

which direction the wind is blowing but it’s almost always the wrong one.

Poor me.

Number three is the hornets who built a nest under a corner of our deck where we can’t get at it to spray them until they are either dead or decide to find a friendlier neighbourhood, preferably one far, far away.

They come out daily, flying around looking for whatever hornets seek, usually me if I’m available, while leaving

Last week, the Alberta SPCA reported that approximately 70 bales of hay worth $10,000 were stolen from a field before they could arrange for transportation. According to them the hay would have been stolen between July 31 and Aug. 5.

The hay had been illegally cut and baled at Lois Hole Centennial Provincial Park just west of St. Albert. Alberta Environment & Parks (AEP) made the decision to offer the hay to the Alberta SPCA. One of their Peace Officers went to inspect the hay before ar-

ranging for transportation, however, all but one of the bales were already gone.

“The hay was going to be used to feed livestock in the care of our organization this winter,” said Alberta SPCA Provincial Supervisor Stuart Dodds. “Unfortunately the bales disappeared before we could set eyes on them. This would not have been an easy task; collecting 70 bales would have required a bale picker as well as numerous loads on a flatbed semi-trailer.”

up the sweet stuff – Hubby has used orange juice, apple juice, watered down maple syrup, and ginger ale in a total of four traps – the hornets can’t fly out so they end up in the drink and soon drown on a sugar high.

Over fifty have succumbed to their love of sweets but I won’t be happy until they’ve all packed their sweet tooth and flocked off. Uninvited guests shouldn’t expect a welcome mat.

But he has been making an effort, since he can’t encourage them to stay in their nest, to shorten their visits above deck. He’s done this in the form of hornet traps made from two-liter soda pop bottles with the top portion cut off and inserted upside down.

He then pours something sweet into the bottle to attract the hornets.

Canadians’ ballot decisions in the Sept. 20 federal election will likely differ depending on what you really care about. But since everyone eats and most of us try to manage a limited food budget, the most important electoral issue will likely be inflation.

Or at least it should be.

Everything is costing Canadians more, including food. And the worst is yet to come, especially if the COVID-19 Delta variant ruins it for many of us this fall.

By December, the average Canadian household will have to pay five per cent more for groceries, or about $700 more a year.

This is the largest dollar-value increase in history. And it could be even higher in 2022.

As the impact of climate change made evident this summer,

the situation will be increasingly unpredictable and chaotic for agri-food businesses, from farm to fork.

And COVID has had its say in the operability of food chains and the costs that businesses must bear to make sure we have enough to buy at grocery stores and restaurants.

Due to COVID, global supply and demand for almost everything is completely distorted. Demand is very strong for several products, including food.

This pent-up demand puts enormous strain on supply chains. Every sector is fighting to get more cargo space.

Some economies are recovering much faster than others, which makes logistical predictability a nightmare.

And sanitary measures everywhere are causing the supply

chain to operate a little more slowly while its costs increase.

The maritime transport industry has been particularly hard hit by the pandemic, which will have long-term consequences. Freight rates have increased by more than 200 per cent on average over the past year.

A world economy that finds Asia and America completely at odds means there’s a shortage of containers and ships. Since January, around 170 new high-capacity freighters have been ordered by various logistics companies.

But these ships won’t be delivered before 2023. So don’t expect the problem to be resolved before then.

The food chain is trying to be kind to consumers by absorbing some of the costs caused by expensive transportation. But by this fall or winter, retailers and restaurateurs will have no choice but to adjust their prices – upwards, of course.

Many federal policies don’t help consumers, and some even contribute to food inflation.

Subsidized unemployment benefits have contributed to a

shortage of workers of all ages, not just young people, which means employers must pay much more in labour costs to get people back to work.

Higher wages are certainly desirable, but there are hardly any incentives to encourage work or retraining, especially among those 55 years old and over, where the level of employment has fallen the most in the last year.

All of this will catch up to consumers. If they haven’t noticed higher food prices yet, they will soon.

Since 2019, the Trudeau government

has shown extreme generosity toward the agri-food sector. It has said yes to almost everything – the food waste program, compensation for farmers, financial support for food processing and food safety.

Ryley Community Centre to host 2021 RhPAP Rhapsody Community Award celebration Moush John Tofield Mercury

The Ryley Community Centre will be hosting Tofield/Ryley/Beaver County RhPAP (Rural Health Professions Action Plan) Rhapsody Community Award celebration on Saturday, Sept. 25.

The award ceremony will be celebrating local healthcare professionals.

“The highlight for the ceremony is the Amazing Medical Race, which is based on the well-known television adventure real-

ity show The Amazing Race, where teams of two people race around the world in competition with other teams,” said Brenda Chehade, Chair of Tofield and Area Health Foundation.

The Amazing Medical Race will be made up of four to six people racing around Tofield, Ryley, and Beaver County.

According to Chehade, there will be a challenge at each stop, clues for the next location and prizes awarded at the celebration barbeque after the race.

There will be bonus

points for teams with a member being part of local healthcare, which is one minute taken off the final finish time.

“We encourage all the communities to participate; pull together your family, friends, co-workers, and neighbours to form a team – team must all fit with seat belts in one vehicle,” she added.

“All ages are welcome.

The race will take place between 2:30 and 4:30 p.m., starting in Tofield and finishing in Ryley.

“Teams should be ready to start anywhere in Tofield at 2:30 p.m. The

team must provide one cell phone number that can receive text messages, take photos and videos.”

There will be seven locations within Tofield, Ryley, and Beaver County area with clues provided at each station for where to go next.

“Participants’ first clue will be sent out via text message to all team leads at the same time,” she explained. “When you get to each location you will have a task to complete before you receive the next clue. Each team will have two hours to com-

plete the race, and post race, teams will be invited to join the Tofield, Ryley and Beaver County Community Attraction and Retention Committee for a celebration event where they will showcase appreciation for local healthcare professionals and be awarded the prestigious RhPAP Rhapsody Community Award for 2021.”

This event will include a complimentary meal for all participating teams, a program with the award presentation as well Amazing Medical Race prizes and some

local entertainment.

“We’d like not only people from the area but beyond to take part in this,” Chehade said. “Not only will you have a lot of fun discovering the area, you will be part of celebrating our local healthcare heroes!”

Hardisty’s Jeff Golka is representing the Maverick Party as the candidate for Battle River-Crowfoot in the coming federal election.

Golka says, “I’ve been frustrated by the situation in Alberta for the past few years,” referring to the practice of voting for a party to keep another from getting power.

“We can’t keep doing the same thing over and over again.”

Golka says he felt dissatisfied with both of the main parties in federal politics, Liberal and Conservative. “I really felt homeless in terms of representation.”

Golka voted as a Conservative for many years, but says, “I think many people, myself included, are unhappy with Conservatives regarding a western point of view.

The party is not representing western people.”

Golka says the carbon tax is one issue he feels particularly strong about.

“Do they realize what they’re saying to Alberta?”

He’s frustrated with a federal government that he sees as bending to

eastern Canada’s demands, and following the Paris Accord for emissions which will end up costing Canadians billions “while the biggest offenders, Russia and China, aren’t even members.”

He checked out the Maverick Party, he says, attending the recent convention. “I would have walked away if the message was wrong,” he says. “Or if these had been people who couldn’t get elected with any other party.” Golka says that wasn’t the case.

“The party has a real desire for Alberta to be strong, and to stay strong, and bring a western voice to the federal government.”

Maverick Party leader Jay Hill recently told the Globe and Mail, “We think we are tapping into western alienation and frustration.”

Golka says, “I believe the Maverick Party has a real chance to represent many people who, so frustrated by a lack of choice for western Canada, weren’t even going to vote in this election.”

Not unlike what the Bloc Québécois does for Quebec, the Maverick

Party seeks to bring western Canada’s voice to the forefront, Golka says.

“We have 28 candidates.

If we can bring six, eight, 10, or 12 to the table, it’s enough to start a conversation. It’s an opportunity to stand up for the west and the things that matter to us, like clean air and our environmentally friendly oil and gas industry.”

He says, “With enough representation, we can effect change.”

Golka says he thinks smaller independent and regional based parties are the future of politics in Canada. “Trying to put one policy platform in place for the entire country isn’t working.

“It’s not about dissolving our country, it’s about getting a fair deal for Alberta; for my riding.”

He adds, “We pay billions in equalization payments, and then receive backlash on everything we do.”

Golka thinks an Alberta point of view is needed for Bills C-48, the tanker ban; and Bill C-69 which calls for tighter restrictions on pipelines.

Consultant hired for organizational review to provide update Patricia Harcourt The consultant hired to conduct an organizational review of Beaver County will provide an update of his progress at the next meeting of council in September.

R.J. McDonald and Associates Inc. was hired to conduct the review in June. The tendering process usually given such decisions was waived “due to extenuating circumstances,” based on short time lines before a municipal election in October.

Deputy Reeve Gene Hrabec (Division 3), who voted in favour of the motion at the time, called into question some decisions made in June. Hrabec asked “about how we got the corporate review services,” stating there was no RFP for this, and some other legal and engineering services that the county contracted.

Hrabec earlier requested a closed session to discuss the issue of “contracting.” Once back in open session,

he questioned the sole sourcing of some services.

“Is that something we would normally do?” he asked, requesting the answer he got be “put out into the community” as he has received questions from ratepayers on this issue.

In June, councillors Kevin Smook (Division 1) and Barry Bruce (Division 4) voted against the hiring of the consultant doing the review citing lack of due process. Bruce also felt that it was bad timing to conduct such a review so close to the municipal elections.

At the Aug. 18 county meeting, Interim CAO Margaret Jones explained why sole sourcing for some services does occur at times, citing legal and IT services as good examples where continuity of knowledge and less disruption works in their favour.

An example of this was when the same engineers were kept for the Equity Industrial Park development,

she said. “It was easier to continue using the same engineer because they have all the background, plans, etc.,” said Jones.

“We do try to follow the policy but sometimes it makes more sense to stay with the same service,” said Jones, adding council is always informed about these instances.

“We could bring the policy to the attention of the new council,” she said, after the Oct. 18 election.

However, Smook wanted to know the costs attached to the contracting of R.J. McDonald and Associates for the organizational review, noting a partial payment had been made to the firm on a cheque dated July 12 for $23,625.

“The direction (of the hiring motion) was to enter into a contract but the amount (of payment) was not named,” said Smook. “Was there a document with numbers in it that was published at the time?I would like it to be disclosed.”

Jones confirmed the previous hir-

ing motion did not state the amount the firm being hired was to be paid.

“Since it’s not in the motion, what can we do?” asked Smook. Jones said that an update could be provided.

With that, Smook made a motion for an update to be provided council on the organizational review including the cost of the contract. The motion was carried.

Smook also asked, “Do we have a snapshot as to when we will be able to see a draft,” referring to the report on the review.

McDonald, who was attending the meeting, said: “It takes about 90 days to perform these reviews,” with time needed to “peel back the onion.”

He said an update could be provided at the next meeting of council, adding he is about 25 per cent into his report.

“I can provide it along with insight into a number of challenges,” said McDonald.

County calls for increased public engagement on water, drainage and pest control policies Patricia Harcourt There were no presenters for the virtual public hearing held by Beaver County Aug. 18 regarding the proposed new surface drainage bylaw.

However, an in-person hearing is also scheduled for Wednesday, September 1 at the Ryley Community Hall allowing people to speak for or against the proposed bylaw, which has been given first reading.

The county wants to engage the public in consultations regarding this and other policies after the municipal election. Administration has been instructed to prepare a public participation plan to review the levels of service for overland drainage and pest control policies.

County Council amended the policies on June 2 to charge a fee for

removing beaver dams on private property on a 50-50 cost share with the county.

Also open to review would be the beaver control incentive program, and the surface drainage bylaw (which had a virtual public hearing already completed Aug. 18, and another scheduled for September 1 in person.)

“Administration recommends that council involve the public in the review of the county’s various water management policies,” stated agricultural field persons Mike Bates and Aimee Boese in their report to council.

They added that the policies have been changed several times in the last few years. “It is obvious that the public has a keen interest in this issue and stakeholder input would be beneficial to develop policies that will reflect a balanced approach

between fiscal restraints and appropriate levels of service.”

The public participation would take place after the municipal election Oct. 18.

“Public engagement is good,” said Deputy Reeve Gene Hrabec (Division 3), noting the county put a policy in place three years ago for this purpose. But Hrabec also wanted to add Public Works and maintenance of roads to the list for review stating that “overland drainage issues affect public works (and) service levels on roads…with overland flooding (impacting) service roads.”

Division 3 Councillor Barry Bruce said he favoured public engagement and reminded council of a community meeting held at the Bruce Seniors Centre three years ago regarding unsightly premises.

The hall was full of people, but Bruce said the county “filled them

with false hope” as nothing has been done to correct an unsightly premises identified at that meeting.

“I’m very much in support of the public participation policy,” said Councillor Kevin Smook (Division 1). Smook said he understood the meeting “will be lively, I get the calls all the time.” He called it “a progressive move where residents bring their concerns forward.”

Councillor Dale Pederson (Division 5) welcomed the move, reminding council that three years ago he introduced council to the need for a water management strategy in the county. However, he said this “was reduced to a public education policy.”

His motion to direct administration to prepare a public presentation plan for levels of service on pest control, road maintenance and drainage policies was passed unanimously.

Beaver County council won’t allow fire bills to be added to tax rolls Patricia Harcourt Beaver County Council did not agree to adding firefighting fees to the county’s tax rolls if an invoice cannot be collected from a ratepayer for a fire call.

Beaver Emergency Services Commission (BESC) manages the fire halls in the county and does the billing for any firefighting fees. BESC usually collects from the resident, often through insurance, but if that doesn’t happen the next step is to send the bill to a collection agency for recovery.

The county was considering a bylaw amendment for BESC services at the Aug. 18 meeting of council.

The county was considering an amended bylaw authorizing BESC to appoint fire guardians, confirm BESC’s authority to collect fees, and include a provision allowing for the collecting of outstanding fees through the municipality’s tax roll.

The few times a debt has not been collectable, BESC has been able to write off the bill off as a bad debt and collect from member municipalities through the annual grant.

“To reduce the amount of bad debt, BESC is proposing that the municipalities assist collection efforts by adding the uncollectible amounts to the tax roll,” stated Interim CAO Margaret Jones, in her report to council.

“The decision regarding collection would remain at the discretion of the municipality.”

Jones recommended that council reject that proposal by deleting Section 8 of the proposed bylaw before renumbering the document’s sections and passing the bylaw as amended.

Jones expressed concerns that the ability to put debts on municipal tax rolls “may become the collection method of choice” as it is much easier than going to a collection agency.

It would also add extra duties to municipal staff, she said, suggesting the county would have to be paid a fee for service as collection agencies receive to collect it on behalf of BESC. She also foresaw staff being pressured by upset landowners to reduce the amount owed, noting there is no appeal process possible through BESC. Plus, if the tax is not paid the landowner is in danger of losing the land in question to public auction because of this proposed section of the bylaw.

She recommended not keeping the section that includes the tax roll collection method as “BESC’s current collection process is generally successful.”

Division 4 Councillor Barry Bruce said that “the whole thing about recovering costs worries me. It could literally be having people thrown out of their homes if they can’t pay.” Referring to a recent fire at Spilstead as an example of “a system run amok,” Bruce said that “a $60,000 hit to anyone is significant.”

Bruce rejected giving “excessive powers…to pass a bill onto the county and stick it on the tax bill.” Calling it “a bit heavy handed,” he agreed with Jones’ estimation of the issue.

Division 1 Councillor Kevin Smook said he “has seen marked improvement in accounts receivable at BESC,” stating he “thinks it’s (best) to be handled on the BESC level.”

Smook’s motion was passed to amend the proposed bylaw to remove the section regarding putting fire call debts on county tax rolls and to then renumber the bylaw.

The amended bylaw was then enacted with three readings given at one sitting.

BURNNG BARRELS For many years burning barrels have been a fixture on farms for dealing with waste, however this way of dealing with waste is discouraged as it can cause damage g to the environment and is difficult to deal with.

Many garbage items should not be burned: things s like aerosol cans and batteries should absolutely never be burned as they can explode and will release toxins into the atmosphere as they burn. Plas stic should not be burned as they also release toxins into the atmosphere. These toxins can also be very harmful to humans. Twines, grain bags, herbicide and pesticide jugs all have recycling programs and should be kept out of the was ste stream.

The other problem present with burning barrels is diisposing of the ash after burning. Hot ash can cause fires in landfills and trransfer stations which is extremely problematic. Even after long periods ash can still be smoldering and warm enough to ignite fire after being dumped, for this reason no ash is accepted at transfer stations within Beaver County. If you only burn organic materials, such as leaves, paper products, cardboard d, this ash can simply be deposited onto gardens as a soil amendment. Using burning barrels is highly discouraged as a way of dealing with waste in general. If you have an old burning barrel you need to dispose of, make sure it has rested a long time and it is not hot at all. Call 780.663.2038 and leave a message for the landfill foreman that you need to dispose of a burning barrel. They can inform you of the process for disposal of this material at the Beaver Region Landfill north of Ryley.

The best way of dealing with waste is to recycle items that have programs available: tires, oil, filters, antifreeze, cardboard, paper, Ag plastics and metal.

All garbage waste should be place in a dumpster bin or at your local transfer station. The local municipalities are stakeholders in Claystone Waste, and residents receive waste services at reduced rates. Rural subdivision fire protective alternatives considered Patricia Harcourt County Council discussed alternatives to rural fire protection services in all rural subdivisions but wants further study done before making any decisions.

The county received a request from a ratepayer in Birch Grove Estates in July regarding the installation of a dry barrel hydrant system or drafting hydrant system to service the subdivision.

At the July 21 meeting, council had passed a motion that administration pursue the costs and feasibility of various fire protection alternatives in all rural subdivisions.

Administration met with the BESC (Beaver Emergency Services Commission) manager, plus two officials from

the Highway 14 Regional Water Services Commission, and came up with several options for an enhanced level of fire services for the subdivisions.

These options were identified: self-contained non-potable water reservoirs in each subdivision; high capacity tankers placed near or at truck fills; and, an additional truck fill at Highway 14’s “high point” west of Whispering Hills Estates.

Public Works Director Darby Dietz also included the idea of having non-potable reservoirs or truck fills for general fire protection use by BESC, and possibly landowners or companies to reduce the amount of treated water sold by the water commission.

The report stated:

“These non-potable reservoirs could be filled by either BESC during practices or by tying them into a dedicated water well to ensure they are continually filled. As well, they could be utilized by landowners or other companies who require water that does not need to be potable,” such as agriculture for spraying, and for oil and gas drilling.

But councillors didn’t find all the alternatives to their liking.

Dale Pederson (Division 5) said he couldn’t see the feasibility of the reservoirs, but called the tanker placements “the most economical way to go” considering the number of subdivisions in the county’s west end. “ C o u n c i l l o r Pederson’s bang on,” said Councillor Barry

that Strathcona has “used the west end truck fill quite a lot,” and could be approached.

A motion by Smook was passed to direct administration “to include costs of a feasibility study to determine the cost of fire protection in the subdivisions and to explore a partnership with Strathcona County.”

However, Hrabec rescinded a motion regarding getting funding for a potential capital project after a reminder that the municipal election in October could interfere with that. Dietz offered the suggestion of using reserve funds for purchasing tankers rather than waiting until the next budget is passed next June.

Smook asked Jones if it were possible to approve the project

even if it isn’t implemented until 2023.

Jones said the expenditures could be authorized early “if you are confident it will proceed,” but she noted that a new council will be coming in following the election.

Bruce added that he “didn’t like doing this just prior to the new election,” calling the project “not really time sensitive.”

Hrabec rescinded his motion, stating that he was “just trying to be proactive.” But he disagreed that these kinds of projects couldn’t be time sensitive, recalling the drought 20 years ago when it was necessary to put in a regional waterline system very quickly to give everyone in Beaver County potable water when the reservoirs started drying up.

Over the summer we have been working to upgrade the following roads: • TWP RD 512 from RGE RD 191 to RGE RD 195 • RGE RD 202 from TWP RD 504 to TWP RD 510 • TWP RD 480 from HWY 36 – RGE RD 132 • RGE RD 132 from TWP RD 480 to Parrish & Heimbecker entrance • TWP RD 482 TerraCem REPAIRS from TWP RD 482 to HWY 36 • RGE RD 132 TerraCem REPAIRS from P&H north to TWP RD 482 These locations are starting to receive the second layer of chip seal and there may be delays as work crews direct traffic in order to work safely. There will be many loose rocks after the second chip seal layer is applied and speed limits will continue to be reduced on these roads until the final sweep is complete. Beaver County's goal is to provide a healthy, injury free work environment for all employees, contractors, visitors and general public. There are potential hazards to the public and vehicles during the construction process. This can include heavy machinery, dust or mud, road material such as gravel, asphalt coatings and rock chips.

Public Hearing: Surface Drainage Bylaw Beaver County Council has given first reading to a Surface Drainage Bylaw and is now inviting public input.

The Surface Drainage Bylaw will enable the County to investigate drainage-related complaints wherever the County has jurisdiction over drainage and waterbodies. This applies primarily to the registered subdivisions in Divisions One and Two. Surface water diversions on agricultural lands remain under the jurisdiction of Alberta Environment and Parks and may require an authorization from Alberta Environment and Parks.

The County’s Surface Drainage Bylaw prohibits the alteration of the surface elevation or grade of any property (public or private) if such work creates a nuisance or danger, adversely affects the stability of a slope, alters an on-site storm water management system, or alters the elevation of an adjacent property. The Bylaw also restricts naturally occurring drainage features or easements from being filled, drained, or redirected.

Enforcement of the Bylaw includes the power of a County Designated Officer to enter onto the property (after reasonable notice is given) to carry out an inspection and obtain information. The Designated Officer may issue a fine for contravention of the Bylaw and/or may issue an Order to a person to return the property to its original state.

The costs incurred for the remediation action are the responsibility of the landowner or the person who caused the contravention.

lives as government tries to control more and more. I’m about freedom, and living by the rights and freedoms accorded to us, and less government intervention.”

Golka says he could have done nothing with his dissatisfaction, but he feels strongly enough about the need for change that he felt he needed to take some action. “I’m running because we need a voice for western Canada. If we win, we can have a say, like the Bloc. We can negotiate for Alberta.

“It’s provincial representation at the federal level,” something he thinks is needed, and that will change the face of political parties in Canada.

“I’m willing to give up my career and represent my riding, if I’m lucky enough to be elected. I’m willing to make the sacrifice.”

Golka adds, “I have a family, and I want everyone in my familiy to have the opportunities like I did growing up. I want to protect their rights for now and in the future.

“If we don’t have choices, we don’t have freedom.

“We talk about the diversity in this country, and it’s people talking about what they think is right for them.”

Golka was born and raised in Hardisty, where he continues to live. He is a real estate agent, with 17 years at Re/Max. Prior to that he operated an oilfield business for 15 years.

He’s raised his family there, and has been an active volunteer in the community. Golka spent one term on Hardisty Town Council, and is the present Chair of the Hardisty Water Resources Committee. He’s also spent many years as a hockey coach, and was president of the East Central Fe-

male Hockey League for a number of years, as well as at Hardisty Minor Hockey, and of the Lloydminster Northern Border Stars spring hockey program.

He says, “That experience has given me the perspective of making decisions based on what’s good for the whole rather than on my own opinion. I believe you have to keep an open mind on all issues and hear both sides.”

He adds, “We have such a moving world right now, and these big parties with huge blanket policies don’t work for everyone.”

Golka says if he were elected, he would continue to bring issues to the riding, forming local committees and representation on the big issues.

He approached the Maverick Party a few months ago, before the writ was dropped, and said he would be inter-

As it happens, the previous potential candidate had moved out of province, and his application came at exactly the right time.

“I was careful in my choice of party. I didn’t go looking for a job as an MP, but I saw a party that I could get behind. I really was homeless in politics for a while.

“We’re not getting anywhere doing the old ‘vote

against Trudeau;’ we need a way to represent Alberta in Canada. We are unique, as Quebec is, and I want to stand up for us.”

He adds, “I don’t want a separatist label applied.

I’m sure the Maverick party will be labelled as a lot of things its not.”

Golka says he’s looking forward to participating in some candidate forums that are presently in the organizational stage across the riding.

He’s also looking forward to welcoming in-

terim Maverick Party leader Jay Hill to the area this week.

Hill will be in Wainwright this Thursday at noon, at the Wainwright Husky Truck Stop, following by a walkabout in Wainwright.

This will be followed by a constituency barbeque being held at the Nose Hill Gun Club, south of Czar, or north of Consort, on Highway 41 at 6 p.m. that evening, followed by comments from both Hill and Golka.

Brisbin of Green Party Continued from Page 2 should be combatting the climate crisis with the same vigour and tenacity with which they responded to World War II. “It is worth noting that this period of time was one of a booming economy,” Brisbin added.

“Between 1939 and 1945, Canada’s gross national product more than doubled. In the last five years, we have learned that carbon taxes are not the answer. Massive investments into communities and renewable energy is the only way forward. The time to act is now.”

Brisbin has spent his childhood in Three Hills “being one with nature” and calls it his home.

Speaking to why he chose to represent the Green Party, Brisbin said, “I do not believe any political party in Canada is anywhere near perfect. I

joined the Green Party last year in order to vote in their leadership election. At that point, I did not know very much about the party, but since then I have gained a deep appreciation for our guiding principles.”

As a Mennonite, the Greens’ principle of nonviolence resonates strongly with him.

“From the 16th century until their arrival on turtle island, my anabaptist ancestors were chased all over Europe. Our adherence to the teachings of Christ meant that hate, killing, violence, and use of force were strictly forbidden for us. When a country tried to enlist us into their army, we were forced to flee. This cycle was repeated over and over until we found refuge in what is now called Canada.”

The other pillar of the Green Party that he cherishes is participatory

democracy.

“I believe that a member of parliament should answer only to their constituents. I don’t play political games. I don’t care what party you are with, I am willing to work with you, and hear you out. As your next MP, my guiding strategy will be very simple. I will listen to my constituents, and I will act in accordance with the will of the majority of the people.”

Brisbin explained that his understanding is that the big parties work from the top down.

“The Green Party works from the bottom up. If Annamie Paul wants me to vote in a way that is contrary to the will of the people of Battle River-Crowfoot, I will choose to side with all of you 100 per cent, all of the time. As a member of a small party, I can’t make any big sweeping promises, but this is a

He further explained that on Sept. 20 when he will cast his ballot, it will be the first time he would have voted for the Green Party.

“In the last two years, my political views have been transformed in many ways. I have heard many interesting ideas that I would love to discuss with the rest of the folks in this riding. I’m sure you all have a bunch of awesome ideas that I haven’t heard yet. I am all ears.”

Brisbin also added that the Green Party will be lucky to get even five seats this election.

“This means we will work together with any and all willing members to pass legislation that improves the lives of the working class,” he said.

All these programs exceed $2.5 billion. That’s $65 per Canadian.

Canadian industry is in dire need of financial support. But by saying yes to everything, the federal government is still offering us policy without a vision, without clear priorities. Decisions often lead to inconsistencies among different sectors, different markets and especially among provinces.

Tackling interprovincial trade barriers would be a good place to start.

Of course, the pandemic is not solely responsible for higher food inflation. There are multiple factors. The Western world is grappling with an inflationary situation that could hurt many of

us. So Canada isn’t alone.

But the arch-generosity of the Liberals has reached a perilous threshold. The federal funds create hyperstimulation of demand, causing prices to inflate at an unsustainable rate.

Food isn’t immune.

The average Canadian pays more in taxes than for food, clothing, and housing or mortgage combined.

Taxation’s impact on our lives is of the utmost importance. While taxes may not go up for many of us, the cost of living will. So the future cost of food needs to be addressed in this election campaign.

Otherwise, even if candidates running for office hammer home the message that taxes won’t increase, food inflation – a hidden, regressive ‘COVID tax’ – is an issue for people who are struggling financially.
