It’s a very different time at the moment, and nowhere is this felt more acutely than in senior homes and lodges, such as the Sunshine Villa where residents have to maintain the social distncing norms too like the rest of the world.

“Deliveries of food, supplies, medication, and other items by the essential workers keep the daily routine going at Sunshine Villa,” said Julie Ishida, activity coordinator. “And the healthcare workers continue to provide care.”

The Sunshine Villa staff have made the necessary changes to their daily schedule to follow the protocols from Alberta Health Services (AHS) for the protection of the residents during the COVID–19 pandemic.

Both Ishida and Manager Lorna Rempel have

been hands-on in communicating to the residents on new protocol and updates.

“Sunshine Villa residents receive written communication updates in their own mailboxes here from Lorna, and additionally, she talks to the residents in groups and individually to explain the new routines, physical distancing, and extra handwashing and sanitizing and their importance,” Ishida added.

“Residents are to remain in Sunshine Villa to selfisolate from the community at large, except for essential medical appointments. They may go outdoors for fresh air and walks on the Sunshine Villa grounds.”

Rempel has also explained to residents how important it is for them to follow the procedures and the changes to protect themselves and staff.

Alberta Premier Kenney addresses weekly papers in teleconference Leslie Cholowsky Staff Reporter

In a special teleconference with Alberta Weekly Newspapers Association (AWNA) editors and publishers, Premier Jason Kenney thanked community newspapers for delivering news to areas of the province not served by other media.

“Thank you so much; as weekly newspapers, in many communities you are the only source for local and regional news.”

He also announced an increase in Alberta’s advertising budget committed to supporting weekly newspapers and getting messages out to their readers, especially for reaching those shut-in

due to COVID-19, or those who aren’t online, or don’t participate in social media.

“You continue to be a very important voice in your communities.”

Since that conference, held Thursday, April 9, COVID-19 cases in Alberta increased by over 200, with the number of deaths attributed to the virus rising from 29 to Monday’s count of 44.

Kenney said, “We are early in the curve, we expect our numbers to get significantly worse, with a mid-May peak in infections, and peak hospitalization rates in late May.” He pointed to Alberta’s slope of infection, calling it “quite gentle” and adding, “I believe we are

in as good as place as we reasonably can be.”

He praised Alberta Health Services (AHS) for having created a lot of excess capacity. “Our emergency wards are seeing the lowest volumes in quite some time.”

He commended efforts to increase capacity, and for innovations utilized by health care providers.

“What keeps me awake at night is the combined economic impact of this virus.”

Kenney referred to the release last week by Stats Canada on the March labour force. “Stats show our unemployment rate has jumped by 1.5 per cent to 8.7 per cent.

Sunshine Villa’s doors are locked to control screening of anyone who may enter. Only staff and essential services are allowed entry.

“At the moment, residents are allowed one designated family member to visit, and only if deemed an essential visit for the purpose of failing health, delivering essential supplies or if the loved one is dying as per Dr. Deena Hinshaw, Chief Medical Officer,” Ishida said. “Each person must pass the Alberta Health Services screening upon arrival to be allowed entry. The screening includes taking their temperature, which is recorded on the screening document, that they must sign and date.

All screening questions must be passed; if not, they must leave.”

served in two seatings,” she explained. “Residents are assigned to a meal-seating time. The dining room tables and chairs are cleaned between the seatings as per protocols.”

Ishida said as hard as it must be for the residents and their loved ones, all staff at Sunshine Villa are working together as a team to help them and each other carry out the protocols.

“Residents are supportive of the new measures and do their best to cooperate with the new routines,” Ishida added appreciatively. “The activities are adapted to follow all the rules of groupings of no more than five, as well as proper use and cleaning of equipment and materials before and after use.

Council Corner Mayor and Council thank residents for participation in Easter decorating fun!

From the Office of the Mayor Town of Tofield Friends, COVID -19 has produced a feeling of fear, uncertainty and for some darkness. This is each of our times to provide the light in our everyday lives that is so greatly needed.

The feeling of light can be transmitted through simple means. This could be phoning a friend, neighbour or loved one. This could be helping others through the delivery of groceries, medications or other necessities.

There are ways that we must look to stay connected with one another and ensure the well-being of those closest to us, while still maintaining physical distancing.

Premier Kenney gave an address to Albertans last week that provided modeling num-

bers, based upon different scenarios. The biggest take away for each of us is the necessity to continue following the protocols put in place by the Province.

By following these protocols we can flatten the curve and lessen the number projected as the medium or worst outcome.

This is on each of us to do, and as residents of Tofield, I feel confident in the abilities of each resident to do so.

Easter provided challenges in distancing, even from our family. But it was of utmost important to once again follow Provincial Protocols and thank you for doing so. This might have been difficult for the chil-

dren in our families to understand, however we must work as diligently as possible to maintain.

I am happy we were able to provide a little fun to all of our young people in Tofield, as Mayor and Council last week deemed the Easter Bunny to be an essential service to Tofield.

Therefore, the Easter Bunny was out and about in the community over the weekend, and we as Council are hopeful that the Easter Bunny had the ability to stop at as many houses as possible.

Obituary MARILYN LOUISE BOS

It is with great sadness that the family of Marilyn Louise Bos announce her passing on April 3, 2020 at the age of 53 where she went to be with our Lord Jesus Christ.

She is survived by her husband of thirty-three years, Hein, two childrenson Christopher (Cassandra) and daughter Lianna; mother Louise Wylie and younger sister Karen (Richard) Gendron, numerous family and friends.

Marilyn was born on June 4, 1966 in Hardisty, Alberta and was raised on the Wylie family farm south of

Lougheed.

She attended high school in Sedgewick and also attended the Killam Baptist Church where she met her husband Hein Bos. She graduated from the Registered Nursing program at the Misericordia Hospital in the spring of 1987. The high school sweethearts were married in July of the same year. She began her nursing career in British Columbia at the Chilliwack General Hospital.

Together Marilyn and Hein raised their two children, Christopher and Lianna, to whom Marilyn was completely devoted and considered her greatest joy. The family moved back to Alberta in 1999 to the Camrose area, south of Kingman where she held positions at St. Mary’s and Wetaskiwin Hospital for a brief

period of time. The bulk of Marilyn’s nursing tenure was at Tofield Health Center where she worked until September of 2019; it was here that she made her home and many life-long friendships through her co-workers and patients. Marilyn’s greatest passions were her family, travel and giving to others. She will be remembered for her many selfless deeds and will be greatly missed.

Due to the Alberta Chief Medical Officer of Health restrictions, a private family service will be held followed by interment at the Kingman cemetery.

Memorial donations may be made to the Tofield and Area Health Foundation Acute Care.

p.m., Tofield RCMP was dispatched to a two-car collision on Hwy. 834 and Twp. Rd. 492. A silver Ford Fusion lost control on the extremely slush-covered roads and slid into the east ditch heading northbound.

While they were waiting for a tow truck, a Nissan truck lost control in the same spot and entered the ditch, striking the Ford Fusion on the driver side. Tofield EMS attended and transported the two occupants to the Tofield Health Centre.

No charges were laid due to the extremely poor driving conditions at the time.

A break-and-enter to a rural property was reported to the RCMP on April 7. The property is located in the area of Twp. Rd. 481 and Rge. Rd. 160, south of Holden. There was damage to the doors of the

outbuildings and the battery was stolen out of the tractor. The offence happened sometime during the previous week when no one was home. The owners were advised by the neighbours of the theft.

A suspicious vehicle was called into the police on April 7 just before 3 p.m.

The complainant stated that they were being followed around in town by a male in a truck and he would not leave them alone. The vehicle was located and the driver was warned about his behaviour.

The Tofield RCMP were called to a grass fire early in the morning of April 8, south of the railroad tracks between Twp. Rd. 512 and Rge. Rd. 195 . Unknown individuals set two piles of railroad tires on fire, which caused the eastbound train to stop. Dur-

ing this time, the train was boarded and the locks cut off of one of the seacans on the railcar.

Several boxes of empty wine bottles were taken before the train was able to continue moving. CN Police are investigating this case still.

During the early morning hours of April 12, the Tofield RCMP were called out to a possible attempted breakand-enter in the area of 51 and 53 Ave. in Tofield.

The complainant stated that they could hear someone rattling the door handles on the house. When they yelled out they were calling the police, the person and vehicle left. Members attempted to stop the white truck with multiple slip tanks in the back of it but the truck took off. This file is still under investigation.

Loose Ends: DIY death disc

Recently Hubby was doing his caged lion routine, bored with no project pending. I suggested that he build his own hover-

craft, the photo and all he needed to know coming from Popular Mechanics, once his Bible.

The craft, called a hover disc, sounded easy enough to build, even to someone like me for whom a thumbtack is a power tool. He’s got the components in his garage; he never discards anything, in case he’ll need it sometime in the next millennium and can locate a bent nail he set down last year within

minutes, should he need it. Plywood, tarps, staple gun, duct tape (of course!), screws and a camping or plastic chair.

And last but not least, a leaf blower. The plywood forms the base – the disc – the tarp is the skirt, held in place and sealed with staples and duct tape and filled with air to produce the ‘hover’ part. The chair is the driver’s seat.

The leaf blower provides the air and the propulsion. Put it all together,

stirred, not shaken, and your hover craft is ready to test out on a smooth surface.

Sure it is, if you have a death wish and actually intend to ride what should be called a DIY Death Disc. In the picture, aimed at making us think ‘oh, what fun’ the guy perches precariously on a backless camp chair, one arm extended out front, a thumb on the Go button, the other arm stretched out behind him,

hand on three blowers – obviously he took the suggestion to ‘get inventive’ with propulsion to heart, but not head. I don’t see what any sane man should be wearing – a Kevlar vest, a helmet, knee and elbow pads, steel toed boots, bubble wrap. Even the still picture suggests a lot of gravel rashes, broken bones and smashed teeth in his future. But he has big noise blockers over his ears and appears to be

RCMP report Continued from Page 4 During the night of April 13, unknown persons attempted to steal a truck located at Best View Manor Apartments. The vehicle was not locked but the ignition was damaged in the process. They were unable to successfully start the truck but did significant damage trying to do so.

On the afternoon of April 13, the Tofield RCMP were dispatched with Holden and Ryley Fire Departments to a barn fire on Rge. Rd. 172 and Twp. Rd. 511. The owner was burning grass near the barn when the flames got away on them. There were no animals or people in the barn at the time.

Motor vehicle regis-

tration help for Albertans The Registrar of Motor Vehicle Services has enacted section 75.1 of the Operator Licensing and Vehicle Control Regulation, Alta Regulation 320/2002.

This is to assist the residents of Alberta who may encounter difficulties renewing their drivers’ licence, vehicle registration, or any motor vehicle document prescribed by the Regulation.

Essentially, Albertans with expiring driver’s licences and/or vehicle registrations have until May 15, 2020 to renew these documents. Specifically: • Motor vehicle documents that expire March 17, 2020 through to May 14, 2020 are hereby extended, and remain sub-

sisting and valid until midnight on May 15, 2020.

• Motor vehicle documents include driver’s licence, identification card and motor vehicle document prescribed by the Regulation.

Effective March 20, Al-

berta commercial and passenger road tests had been suspended until April 20, 2020.

However, Alberta Transportation will continue to evaluate the situation and may extend the road test suspension term.

• The road-test suspension is part of the Government of Alberta’s response to the current health crisis.

• Albertans who had a road test scheduled will be able to rebook online as of April 17, 2020 at no extra charge.

Rural Alberta is the place to be

As Canadians reassess what is important to them while stuck in Covid-19 isolation, there may be a lot of city dwellers saying “goodbye city life” in the near future.

Post-pandemic population studies have shown that a certain amount of deurbanization has sometimes followed.

Could a “Green Acres” syndrome follow Covid-19?

This pandemic, like all past ones, infects people more in areas of high population densities. It’s difficult to social distance when the only way to get around economically is mass transit. Urban residents endure lineups everywhere, and the spread of disease is bolstered by airports connecting international travellers.

Consequently Covid-19 infection percentages in large urban areas are more than nine times what they are in rural areas, despite the commuting, shopping and travelling of today’s vogue and modern rural residents.

New York has the highest population density in the USA (10,000 per sq. km.), and its death toll due to Covid-19 has just topped 10,000. As many as one-third of American cases have come from New York, its most vibrant city.

As terribly crowded as the Big Apple is, Mumbai (India), Manila (Philippines), and Dhaka (Bangladesh) all have more than four times the population density. Covid19 cases known or accurately reported from these and dozens of other densely populated cities in the world are often unknown, but we can assume are very high.

idents of polluted cities are most susceptible. China not only has many of the world’s most densely populated cities, but roughly half of the earth’s 500 most polluted cities are also in The Middle Kingdom.

(Environmentalists should take note that in that long list there is not a single city from the United States or Canada among the most polluted).

Toronto with 4,300 people per sq. km. has reported well over 2,000 cases of Covid-19, and much smaller Edmonton with 1,855 citizens per sq. km is at 400 cases.

In Beaver, Flagstaff, and Lamont counties, most towns have population densities of between 100-300 people per sq. km. In our farming communities the population density drops to two or three people per

sq. km. Almost 40 percent of our county-wide populations come from farm families.

The relative isolation in rural areas like ours leads the way in capping the spread of pandemics, just as closed borders, and social distancing does.

Technology and the ability of many people to work from home offices now also allows rural areas to better retain

their populations.

Will our rural youth grow up and secure jobs in the city but not move?

Will they be able to stay in their home towns and raise their family in the safety and comfort that they themselves were? Will city people now explore the safety of rural life? It may all be possible, so . . .

“Keep Manhattan, just give me that countryside.”

Autodialer informs more Albertans of negative test results Starting today, Wednesday, April 15, more Albertans being tested for COVID-19 will now have the option to receive their negative COVID-19 test results over the phone through an autodialer system that was initially piloted in the Calgary Zone.

Individuals being tested for COVID-19 in any community setting in Alberta will be provided with the opportunity to consent to the autodialer method of receiving negative COVID-19 test results at the time they are referred for testing. All individuals who test positive for COVID-19 will continue to be contacted by a member of the AHS Public Health team for follow-up and case management.

This expansion of autodialer use to all zones of AHS follows its success in Calgary Zone, where the autodialer option was implemented on April 2.

From April 2 to April 12,

6,685 Calgary Zone residents consented to receive negative test results via autodialer. In those cases, 95 per cent were successfully reached by the autodialer. All unsuccessful calls are redialled by the auto-dialer later in the day, or followed up directly by Health Link, ensuring everyone receives their results.

This innovative use of autodialer technology allows healthcare teams to focus their follow-up work on Albertans with positive test results. It also shortens turnaround time on test results, helping Albertans learn of their results sooner.

All Albertans who receive negative results are advised to visit ahs.ca/results for additional important direction on steps they still need to take to continue to keep themselves and their families healthy.

MARY SCHMIDT (TOEWS)

It is with both profound sadness and gratefulness for her love, that we the family of Mary Schmidt announce her passing on April 8, 2020 in Tofield, Alberta.

Mom passed away peacefully after hearing the voices of her children and hearing many of the hymns she dearly loved.

Mom is lovingly remembered by her 3 children and their families: Daughter Evelyn and Peter Bartel (Ryan and Erinne, Jasper & Kagan), (Mark and Lisa, Logan, Sydney & Justin), (Kenton and Sarah), Daughter Irene and Ken Froese, (Nathan and Brieanne, Shaeley, Gavin and Avery), (Kerri and Trevor, Adam), (Karla Neufeld), (Nolan and Madison, Aubrey), Son Gordon and Monica. (Lauren and Justin Lungal, Walker & Dayton), (Jordyn and Miles Pennington, Cardin & Tayla), (Alayna) (Landon).

She is also remembered by her special cousin Ann Neufeld.

Mom was predeceased by her beloved husband David, brother and sister Abraham Toews and Sara Zweigert and step sister Lucy Benko.

Mary was born in the Ukraine in 1926 and after living through many hardships of WWII, at the age of 21, mom was invited to Tofield, Alberta to be a “daughter” of her uncle and aunt Jacob and Elizabeth Kliewer. This wonderful relationship provided mom with roots in Canada, and she went on to study English, make friends and marry our dad.

This security allowed her to flourish and enjoy life.

The Schmidt family proved to be a large family who embraced her, and for this she was ever so grateful.

Together, Mom and Dad farmed south of Tofield; this was an enjoyable career for them and proved to be a wonderful rural setting for our family.

Mom devoted many years volunteering: selling Self Help goods for MCC, working at That Place, and sewing many blankets for MCC. These activities brought her much enjoyment and offered her the opportunity to “give back” to MCC - for it was from MCC that she received a care parcel while in Germany during WWII.

After being separated from her family for 43 years, she was reunited with them after they immigrated from the Soviet Union to Germany. The four trips mom and dad made to Germany, allowed mom to reconnect and celebrate her family.

Mom was fully devoted to our dad and our whole family where each new member of the family was celebrated and treasured. She considered her greatest joy to be her enduring and unfailing faith in God. Mom enjoyed good health and vitality her whole life. As her health waned, she appreciated the care and support she received at the Tofield Lodge, from Tofield Home Care and at the Tofield Long Term Care. We thank you for your kindness and exemplary care for mom.

On April 11, 2020 we met over Zoom and with Rev Adam Hall leading, we remembered and celebrated the life and faith of our mother, grandmother and great grandmother.

Interment of ashes will be at a future date when the family will gather to celebrate mom’s life. Donations would be gratefully accepted for MCC and the Tofield Handivan Society.

Beaver County special council meeting deals with landfill transition Patricia Harcourt A special meeting of Beaver County Council was held on Tuesday, April 7 to discuss aspects of Beaver Municipal Solutions' (BMS) landfill transition to a municipally controlled corporation (MCC).

Reeve Jim Kallal and Deputy Reeve Gene Hrabec specifically want the concerns of county residents who live around the regional landfill to be included and a way of handling the concerns officially as part of the agreement.

But the entire council agreed at an April 1 meeting to defer an April 21 meeting of the MCC steering committee "until the municipalities have had adequate time to review the business plan and associated materials."

Council passed another motion to get clarification from BMS or the MCC steering committee about which of these would "take the initiative to respond to residents regarding their concerns raised in the Cumulative Impact Study."

Council also said that any information about addressing the concerns should be posted on the BMS website.

At the special meeting April 7, council reviewed the agreements and documents that are part of the transition to what would be called the Claystone Waste Limited Partnership.

John McGowan of McGowan and Associates attended the meeting to offer explanations and insight into the documents as they were reviewed.

Kallal represents Division 2 and Hrabec Division 3 in the county, and both had a list of issues and questions they wish answered to their satisfaction prior to the deal being signed to incorporate this landfill

into a business model.

A business model allows the landfill to undertake more initiatives that could increase profits for what would then be called Claystone. The county is the last holdout of the original board members not to approve the MCC, and wants answers to neighbour concerns.

They include the spread of mud onto the adjacent highway, as well as noise, odour and seagull issues, along with water contamination concerns, among others.

BMS responded to the concerns recently by stating: "While of chief concern at the present time is continuing safe waste disposal operations during this pandemic, we are still working hard to ensure negative impacts from our operations are mitigated to reduce impact on the surrounding community."

Regarding the mud tracking issue, it stated: "Spring is almost here and as the snow begins to melt there will be mud. We have implemented new strategies to deal with it this spring."

That includes using mud shaker mats "to reduce the amount of mud being tracked onto Hwy. 854."

Rubber blades have been installed on the skid steers "to better be able to clean any mud that does happen to track on the highway."

BMS stated it was "committed to operating safely during this pandemic and doing our best to reduce the negative impacts of our operations on the neighbouring community."

The special meeting also dealt with council concerns about how to hold a virtual public hearing for the MCC transition when the county residents should be able to hear and participate in the hearing.

Also of concern is what implications a Limited Partnership

Agreement would have for Local Authority Pension Plans.

The new entity would still have local municipalities as members including the towns of Tofield and Viking, the villages of Ryley and Holden, and the county itself.

Council is concerned about how the formula for dividends these member municipalities would receive would be worked out.

Another concern is how many directors there would be on the controlled corporation board, and how they would be appointed.

Other elements included were how to define a steering committee or make up a public advisory committee, how to dissolve an owner municipality, or take on a new partner.

The manner of compensation to the municipal partners for costs they must absorb in order to form Claystone was another factor, as well as the need for an alternate for the corporation CAO. Hrabec's motion to have a requirement that the Annual General Meetings of the corporation be made to include the public was passed.

After this, there were more discussions of wanting to ensure that doc-

uments for the incorporation were current, dated and numbered.

Also, "who will respond to residents" and to the "concerns and responses contained in the Cumulative Response Letter and RFD prepared by the county to the BMS board."

The documents included the "next steps" for the MCC Committee to initiate the completion of the municipally controlled corporation. It was recommended that a long list of agreements and documents be reviewed and approved by the Limited Partners Councils, or member municipalities.

At the April 21 meeting, the agenda included comments by the municipal councils on the agreements and documents that had been sent to them.

The MCC also wanted the communication strategy and business plan update approved at the meeting, and a review of the corporation's accounting framework.

Hrabec had spoken at a previous council meeting about the need for the MCC business plan to be updated to include additions recommended by the county including meeting the environmental and other concerns listed.

Premier praises UK land army idea Promotes using Alberta workforce over migrant workers Leslie Cholowsky During a teleconference with Alberta Weekly Newspaper editors and publishers on Thursday, April 8 Premier Jason Kenney praised the UK’s initiative in calling for a “land army� of tens of thousands of Britons newly employed to fill that country’s needs for agricultural workers. “With regards to temporary foreign workers, the message I’m sending out to employers is drilling down to local unemployed high school and university students as in the UK. “This is an opportunity to reimagine the labour market for many agricultural businesses.�

Kenney praised Agriculture Minister Drew Dreeshan for working closely with agriculture producers in the province, citing three recent tele-conferences with farms and ag. businesses in the province, adding. “We include agriculture as an essential service,� including agrelated services, he said. “We need to continue to feed people.�

He commended Dreeshan for his work in securing supply chains and access for agricultural produc-

ers, saying, “We see the importance of our farms and food producers.�

He commented on how that has become more obvious to Alberta’s urban population now more than in any other time.

Kenney talked about a situation in a meat plant near Calgary where federal meat inspectors had refused to go back to work after the plant had a shutdown due to COVID-19, where Dreeshan recruited Alberta Ag. inspectors to help get the plant back to work. “We see Agriculture as a key part of our economic recovery strategy,�

Kenney said, noting that a member of the agriculture industry sits on the Province’s Recovery Committee. He said he expects programs and projects to be expanded in the near future as the province explores and considers different opportunities for growth in the ag industry.

Public Notice

Hello everyone: For many of us, it is hard to comprehend the situation the whole world has found themselves in currently with COVID 19.

For us who live in the country here in Beaver County we have to be thankful for our wide-open spaces that afford us the luxury of seeing the beginning of a late spring.

For many in cities, this privilege is not enjoyed by residents during these troubled times.

Our thoughts and our minds are crammed with sadness and emotion related to this world crisis affecting our families, loved ones, and friends.

Beaver County is very proud to partner with our own towns and villages to support our health care providers, our emergency response teams, and our staff in the seniors’ lodges. Council applauds the dedication of the wonderful management and staff of our health care facilities, seniors’ lodges, and our first responders.

Our Province and Premier are showing tremendous leadership and immediate response to this pandemic and we should be very grateful.

County staff acted quickly and Beaver County was put on full alert and in compliance well ahead of the current ordinances. We are updated daily from our respected Ministers and affiliated associations.

In Beaver County, there has been a tremendous outpouring of compassion from businesses and individuals, including our FCSS and Victim Services teams, the leadership of our first responders, fire chiefs, our Beaver Ambulance Services personnel, RCMP, County Peace officers, Rural Crime Watch, and so many volunteers.

The bravery of doctors, nurses, and health care employees is extraordinary at this time and is to be applauded.

Retailers in grocery stores throughout the County deserve a tremendous amount of thanks and gratitude for the extra effort, long hours, and compliance to legislation undertaken by the owners, managers, and staff. As well, a special thanks goes to our convenience stores for complying and staying open to provide many of our necessities.

I would also like to personally commend our Deputy Reeve, Gene Hrabec, who chairs both our Beaver Emergency Services Commission and our Beaver Foundation for seniors for his leadership and guidance during this crisis.

We must not be cavalier about this current situation - we must comply and ride it out. I am personally proud to be an Albertan and a Canadian as we have addressed the situation quickly and taken it very seriously in comparison to many other countries.

The Prime Minister and our Premier keep us updated and debriefed daily. Premier Kenney appears every day, usually at 3:30 pm on CBC, with his department heads and his Chief Medical Officer. The Prime Minister addresses us everyday at 9:30 am.

Council has witnessed here in Beaver County the kindness, the extra mile of helpfulness, concern, and generosity from everyone that is able to help. It would do all of our hearts good to call a senior, a young family, or a lonely person that you know during this crisis.

Please, please comply! Isolate yourself and your loved ones! Wash your hands regularly! Keep your body sanitized, cover your nose and mouth when sneezing and coughing, and please avoid any unnecessary visits or close contact during this very contagious coronavirus disease and worldwide pandemic.

Kenney’s address Continued from Page 2 “I believe those numbers massively understate the true picture.”

He pointed to people presently in isolation but still technically employed, and says a growth in employment in oil and gas in early March may have skewed the averageweighted results for the month.

“Later this spring I expect to see unemployment in the high teens or north of 20 per cent.”

He said this is a triple whammy for a province already enduring hardships due to the past few years of low economic growth, historic low prices for oil, and a global pandemic.

Kenney said that is what prompted the province to commit $12 billion in a variety of economic programs, including an additional half a billion dollars to AHS to fight the COVID-19 pandemic, billions of dollars of deferrals, for business taxes, student loans, utility deferrals, emergency isolation payments to individuals, and $50 million to charities in the province.

He talked about the province’s newest bill to increase funding for capital maintenance projects for the province’s infrastructure, calling it, “A

quick way of surging dollars into the economy.”

Kenney said the capital maintenance budget is the easiest to ramp up, “And we will be doing more,” he promised. “It doesn’t make sense to blow all our fiscal power now. We will announce more measures post-peak.”

Kenney also gave a nod to the federal government, saying, “I appreciate the Government of Canada’s actions to help employers and employees, but I am pleading with them to add a oil and gas financial liquidity.

“Eight hundred thousand jobs in Canada rely directly or indirectly on the oil and gas industry.”

Kenney said that maintaining contact with Alberta’s municipalities is important at this time, including rural Alberta.

“I work closely with Municipal Affairs Minister Kacee Madu; we are in contact with mayors, reeves, and administration during weekly conference calls, including Dr. Hinshaw.”

He said issues raised in those conversations are being addressed, like extending local states of emergency.

“We want to reopen the economy as quickly and widely as possible but we also don’t want to see a second surge.”

He alluded to the models being followed in Taiwan, Singapore, and S. Korea where they have been able to contain it pretty well so far.

According to Kenney, in the relaunch phase, the plan is to open up areas where the viral spread is low such rural Alberta. He said a personalized and regionalized restart may see many parts of rural Alberta see recovery first.

“If we let up right now it will spread throughout the province, doing more damage to our health care system and economy.”

He talked about introducing elements of the province’s recovery strategy once Public Health orders are relaxed, and added, “We have employed a targeted approach to limiting the spread of the virus, we are ramping up testing, we will be implementing stricter border screening, supplementing or replacing federal screening, we will be enforcing more aggressive quarantining rules, and more aggressive tracing and tracking of the virus; we will be taking a smart regional approach to relaunching our economy.”

In closing, Kenney said, “I truly appreciate the resolve and stoicism of Albertans during these challenging times.”

TOFIELD 4-H BEEF AND MULTI CLUB Unfortunately, we are not able to have our Annual Club Show, or the District Show and Sale due to the COVID-19 health restrictions.

However, what the members have done, is privately marketed their own steer to buyers who wish to put meat into their freezers. These are the measures taken by all the 4-H members in our Beaver District.

As of today, Tofield 4-H Beef animals have been sold. HOORAY! However, if there are buyers still looking for meat, please contact Matthew Spruyt, Beaver District president.

The animals will be with the 4-H member until the 27th of April which would be the date of the District Show and Sale. This is in case the health restrictions are lifted from our Regional Office and the members, perhaps would be permitted to show their animals. Knowing that the animals are already sold, no sale would happen.

We are VERY thankful to all the buyers of the steers and to Tofield Packers for the generous support provided.

We have created a FACEBOOK page, where the members have submitted videos to show their animals, to complete their year. The Facebook page is also for others to see what we do in 4-H and what is entailed.

Amidst the uncertainty of the COVID-19 pandemic, sports organizations and recreational leagues are postponing or cancelling their events.

Speaking to this, Craig Neufeld, Tofield Minor Baseball Association’s (TMBA) president said, “With regards to our season in particular we have made the decision to postpone the 2020 season until further notice. We believe the safety of our athletes and their families are the primary concern and until we know more about the transmission of this virus we will not be able to make a concrete decision one way or another.”

According to Neufeld, if the season is fully can-

celled then all registration fees will be refunded to the families. “We will hopefully be able to make this call by the first week of June,” he added. “At this point we are hoping to facilitate a shortened season potentially for July/August.”

Neufeld stated that with such a fluid issue and new information coming out daily it is not as easy as just cancelling the season, and that they need to be flexible in how they operate.

“The kids and their families are going through so much right now, its tough to take away yet another thing. I know at a young age that if you took away baseball or hockey or any other sport I would be absolutely devastated!”

Neufeld explained.

Tofield Minor ball took some more good strides this off-season.

“We have expanded our executive to help provide our athletes with a much greater experience,” he said. “We have also started a female program in hopes to retain our female ball players past certain ages.”

There will be some TMBA baseball gear still being done in hopes to get some recognition around town and outside of Tofield as well for players, parents, and coaches.

“Realizing baseball is just a sport and there are greater issues at play we must all do our part – no matter how small – and make our sacrifices to help speed up the return to normal,” Neufeld noted.

“Let’s just hope this passes sooner than later.”
