Serious accident claims three lives at Highways 13 and 41 Leslie Cholowsky Editor
On Thursday, Aug. 6, Provost RCMP were called to an accident scene at the intersection of Highways 13 and 41, where a cube/box van and a mini van had collided just before noon. The Westend Fire and Rescue, from Amisk, Hughenden, and Czar Department was also called to the scene. When police arrived, they discovered the mini van was a Correctional Service Canada vehicle, occupied by two Correctional Officers and a female inmate. As a result of the collision, all three occupants of the mini-van, including 25-year-old Ramandeep Kaur Maan, a resident of Winnipeg, a 57year-old Nicolae Serban of Sherwood Park, and Kiara Mooswa, a 24-year-old female resident of North Battleford, were confirmed deceased at the scene. The driver of the box truck was taken to a nearby hospital with minor injuries. The cause of the collision remains under investigation, with an RCMP Collision Reconstructionist called to the scene. Assistant Commissioner Wayne Nichols, Acting Commanding Officer of the Alberta RCMP said Friday, “The Alberta RCMP offers our sympathies to everyone affected by this tragic event. “We extend our support to our fellow officers at Correctional Service Canada as they mourn their friends and colleagues and send our condolences to the loved ones of all three individuals whose lives were lost yesterday.” Commissioner Talal Dakalbab, Correctional Service of Canada, said, “This news will be deeply felt across our organization, particularly by those at Edmonton Institution for Women and throughout the Prairie Region. “Our colleagues served Canadians with professionalism, dedication, and courage. “Their commitment to public safety and to CSC's mission leaves a lasting legacy, and we will ensure their invaluable contributions to our country are never forgotten.” The intersection was closed until past 7 p.m. while the investigation was underway. Premier Mark Carney issued a statement after the news of the accident broke, saying, “Every day, correctional officers do difficult work with an enormous responsibility: keeping
Canadians and our communities safe. Yesterday, two officers tragically lost their lives. My thoughts today are with their loved ones, their colleagues across Correctional Service Canada, and all those grieving this terrible loss.” Battle River-Crowfoot MP and Official Opposition Leader Pierre Polievre, also issued a statement Friday, as the accident occurred in his riding, saying, “Saddened to learn of these
two correctional officers who lost their lives in the line of duty. “My thoughts are with their family, friends, and colleagues as they now face this devastating loss. “We owe a debt of gratitude to the correctional officers and staff who put themselves in harm’s way every day to keep Canadians safe. May those we lost rest in peace.”
