Damn Beavers!
Lamont County has trapped more than 200 beavers to date this year. County Agricultural Fieldman Terry Eleniak said the beavers and their lodging dams are creating water flow issues throughout the county and they have to be removed before too much infrastructure damage occurs.
Beavers, muskrats creating water issues across Lamont County BY JOHN MATHER Beavers are causing major water damage in parts of Lamont County and despite having trapped more than 200 so far this year, county officials are having trouble keeping up. “The habitats are much larger than last year,” said Lamont County Agricultural Fieldman Terry Eleniak. “Because the ditches have much more water and because of all the rain we’ve
had the wetlands are full of water.” He added it’s not just the beaver causing problems this year, but muskrats have also been a problem. “There’s muskrats that are blocking our culverts,” he said. He estimates the County has trapped about 125 muskrats this year. He said last year, along a one mile stretch of road they took out 64 muskrats.
He adds the beavers habitat is not isolated to any one area of the county, but they are spread right across it. “Wherever our watercourses are there are beavers,” he said. His crews, he adds, go in and either blow up the dam or use mechanical equipment to break it down and then quickly call a trapper to come in to trap the beaver or shoot them. Eleniak said there is an agreement
with agricultural producers in the County to go onto private property and remove the beavers if they are an issue, and there is also an agreement with the Crown to go on water courses, which are crown land, and clear out beaver dams. “This year we’ve had good co-operation, because everyone wants the water build ups gone.
