ATB to close in Bruderheim Town of over 1,300 would be left with no bank

BY JANA SEMENIUK The town of Bruderheim will be losing its only bank next spring.

Alberta Treasury Branch sent notices to their account holders last week informing them of the move and encouraging them to seek services in Lamont.

“ATB Bruderheim located at 4904 Queen St will close permanently at noon on March 8, 2022,” said the notice. “The same ATB experts you’ve come to know and trust in Bruderheim will move to support you down the road in Lamont.”

shared his feelings on the closure recently on social media.

“Our community depends on our friends from ATB to be there for our residents,” he said. “We hear ATB is abandoning our town. How will our seniors who cannot drive be able to continue their banking?”

Earlier this spring ATB closed 10 branches across the province; four in Edmonton, five in Calgary, and one in Grande Prairie. The move cost 13 people their jobs while ATB cited frequency of in-branch transactions, number of customers, and customer growth as reasons for the closures.

Bruderheim’s last remaining bank plans to close in the spring of 2022.

Couple can’t explain why farm is innundated with mountain ash trees

BY JANA SEMENIUK Growing mountain ash trees has never been a problem for Wes and Diana Hrehorets on their farm near Andrew.

Despite never planting one of them since taking over the family farm in the early ’70s, today there stands over 125 scattered throughout their parcel of land.

“This farm is on a really old land site. The driveway is 103 years old and an old well in the shack is 102 years old,” said Wes. “Grain and cattle were farmed here and it’s been that way for years. I took over this farm from my uncle in the early ’70s and pulled a few Mountain Ash out when I made the lawn. I think the birds started carrying them because then they were growing all over the place.”

In the more than 40 years since seeing those first few trees, Wes said he is amazed at where the trees are growing today.

“I don’t understand how they can grow where they are growing,” said Wes as he pointed to a healthy young tree tucked beside a small structure.

“Anywhere they won’t be disturbed they just grow.”

The bushy berried trees can be seen growing between buildings, along fence lines, within

small gardens and even tucked beside old farm equipment.

Diana added that she never realized how many Mountain Ash trees they had until it was mentioned by her brother-in-law Tom. “I’m so used to them, I didn’t notice that we had so many,” she said. “We were having a family get together one day and Tom said ‘you have so many here. Let’s go out and count them’.”

Walking around the 160-acre farm, Diana said she was astounded when they counted more than 125 trees.

“I laughed and said, ‘Keep going Tom because they are all around!” she said.

While purchasing a Mountain Ash from a nursery can cost between $75 and $200, Diana spoke of good-natured ribbing when she sends Tom pictures of her trees.

“He said he cannot understand how we have so many trees,” she said. “He said he keeps trying to grow even one in his yard and they just keep dying.”

Diana added that she has a healthy appreciation for the shady trees.

“They are so beautiful when they grow, “she said. “They are good for wind break and the birds really love them.”

The Mountain Ash, also known as the

Rowan Tree, is one of the most commonly planted ornamental shade trees in Alberta according to wildrosetree.ca. As a true four-season tree, it produces nice white flowers in spring, red or orange berries in summer as well as berries that persist throughout winter, attracting birds.

Lamont County councillors struggle with Truth and Reconciliation Day

BY JOHN MATHER Lamont County council had a great deal of discussion about just how to celebrate the Truth and Reconciliation holiday that will be held tomorrow (Sept. 30).

Executive assistant Jessica Post gave an administration report on the upcoming holiday Sept. 14, outlining what other communities around the province were proposing for the holiday.

“This day provides an opportunity for each public servant to recognize and commemorate the legacy of residential schools,” she said. “This may present itself as a day of quiet reflection or participation in a community event.”

She added Alberta hadn’t made a decision to recognize the holiday leaving municipalities to decide on how they would mark it individually.

She said she had reached out to other municipalities to find out what they were doing highlighting the city of Lethbridge, Strathcona County and local school boards and how they were marking the day.

“Lamont County is located on Treaty Six

lands and it would be nice to take the opportunity to educate our staff and reflect on what’s happening right now.”

If staff was given the day off with pay to mark the day, Post told council it would cost in the neighbourhood of $8,000 in salaries to be paid.

Reeve David Diduck then asked if council had any comments?

Councillor Neil Woitas felt the County should follow whatever the province decided to do to commemorate the day.

Councillor Roy Anaka wondered what other counties beside Strathcona were doing, adding he felt he needed more information.

Acting CAO Roberta Malysh said other councils were wondering what Lamont was doing to mark the day.

“This is a sensitive subject,” said Diduck. “I think from my perspective an injustice was done with the residential schools. I think in respect to the reconciliation model, we’ve been working on that for a few years now.”

He said his concern was if they gave the employees the day off what were they going to do in support of the day,

rather than just having a day off from work?

Post said she could provide resources for staff to look through and provide some educational background and possibly bring in some people to provide talks and background on the Truth and Reconciliation Day. Councillor Anaka added he felt all council should be present before council made any final decision.

Councillor Daniel Warawa was absent from the Sept. 14 council meeting.

Woitas agreed adding more information was needed.

Malysh wondered what further information administration could provide.

“We have what other municipalities are doing, so I don’t know what else we can provide. We have the guidelines from the Federal government which we’ve provided to you.”

Woitas said he couldn’t support anything right now until the Alberta government made a decision on what they were going to do.

“I can’t see us having the day off if the province isn’t taking it off.”

they had to study it for just Sept. 30 or was the day going to be celebrated on an ongoing basis.

Post said it would be marked on an annual basis every Sept. 30.

Diduck wondered what the County could do to find a means to reflect on the importance of the day.

“It’s unfortunate that Covid is going on.

Ideally I would like to do some sort of ceremony in which the entire county could participate.”

“I think we have to make the right decision but I don’t think Lamont County should be followers in this.”

Post told council that she could reach out to indigenous leaders and Metis speakers who could come in and speak with the administrative staff.

Malysh told council St. Albert was erecting two flag poles with a Metis

staff, but not recognize it as an official holiday.”

“I’m not comfortable with that.”

Diduck agreed that if a program could be held and the community could be involved it would be a good thing, but he wasn’t sure if they could get it set up in the short time available.

Diduck pointed out the Lamont library was planning an event to mark the day.

Woitas agreed to bringing in speakers for the staff but he was opposed to giving staff the day off.

Council passed a motion to recognize the national day of Truth and Reconciliation and close the County offices from 2 to 4 p.m.

Administration was then directed to arrange a ceremony to recognize the National Day of Truth and Reconciliation on Sept. 30.

Council initially tabled any decision until later in the meeting hoping Warawa could join them.

With Warawa still away, later in the meeting, Anaka asked if staff could come in and mark the day at the administration building and then have part of the day off.

“You could always have an awareness day,” said Malysh. “We could hold it outside if it was for staff.”

Councillor Wayne Woldanski said it should be recognized, but he “was struggling with recognizing it as an official holiday.”

Opinion On China, and should Trudeau step down after another minority win?

BY JOHN MATHER So the two Michaels have been returned to Canada.

With a quick court episode in New York last week, Huawei chief financial officer Meng Wanzhou admitted to lies and deception in a deferred persecution agreement in the U.S. Attorney’s Office, and her house-arrest pending extradition from Vancouver was over.

As she was on a flight back to China from Vancouver, Michael Kovrig and Michael Spavor were released and put on a plane to Calgary ending 1,019 days in a Chinese prison.

Nothing more than a political prisoner exchange, something seen in the old cold war days quite often.

And there was Justin, in Calgary, to greet the two on their return home.

Why? He had nothing to do with their release.

The Americans, by removing the extradition warrants against Wanzhou resulted in the freeing of the two Michaels even if the Biden White House staff says the two are unrelated.

Biden probably doesn’t really know about either one of the moves.

Trudeau’s love affair with China and its way of life has tainted Canada’a standing in the international community.

And a new agreement signed last week, the “three eyes” intelligence group was formed between Australia, the United Sates and England. Canada, a member of the original “five eyes” intelligence gathering club, wasn’t even in the loop about the new three-way partnership.

Why? Because of the Liberals pandering to China.

After all Trudeau admires China.

“There’s a level of admiration I actually have for China,” he said a few years ago. “Their basic dictatorship is actually allowing them to turn their economy around on a dime.”

His government has not banned the development of Huawei’s 5G technology as others have around the world. Nor have the Liberals been forthcoming on the reasons for the firing of two Chinese scientists from a Winnipeg high level virus lab. His government went to court to prevent the documents from being released.

And his government hasn’t condemned the mistreatment and imprisonment of the Uighur minority which all opposition parties had voted to call genocide. Trudeau and the majority of his Liberals skipped parliament that day and abstained.

Now, in a new poll commissioned after the election last week

by Maru Group, finds the vast majority of Canadians, 77 per cent, think Canada is more divided now than before the election was called.

Those who believe that the country is more divided than before the election was called are represented in every dimension of the country: a full majority in every region, and each socioeconomic demographic.

CONTINUED Those most likely to indicate the country is more divided than it was before the election hail from Alberta (88 per cent), followed by those living in Manitoba/Saskatchewan, and Ontario (79%), British Columbia (77 per cent), Atlantic Canada (70 per cent), and Quebec (69 per cent). Men (78 per cent) and women (76 per cent) share this view equally, except for the youngest Canadians (aged 18–34, at 67 per cent) who are less likely to accept this premise and the oldest Canadians (aged 55+, at 82 per cent) who are more likely to believe it is the case. Every other cohort aligns with the national

norm.

Following the election we ended with a minority government, not the majority Trudeau so badly craved and the only reason he called the election.

As a result of this, the poll found 55 per cent of the respondents felt Trudeau should resign as the leader of the Liberal party. Of those, it was Manitoba and Saskatchewan respondents who lead that charge with 71 per cent saying he should resign and not lead the Liberals into the next election.

Across Alberta it was 64 per cent; 60 per cent in B.C.; 57 per cent in Ontario; Atlantic Canada at 50 per cent; and only 44 per cent of Quebecers felt Trudeau should resign.

Those who felt Erin O’Toole should give up the reins of the Conservative Party of Canada stood at 51 per cent; and only 31 per cent felt Jagmeet Singh of the NDP should resign.

The poll taken by Maru/Blue was undertaken Sept. 21 and 22 of 1,510 randomly selected Canadians who are Maru Voice Canada online panelists.

The estimated margin of error is +/-2.5 per cent 19 times out of 20.

A divided country, the majority wanting Trudeau to step down.

What are the chances?

I really expect hell will freeze over before Trudeau would do the right thing for this country.

FROM WHERE I SIT: Preservation of Democracy

BY HAZEL ANAKA After about a month of working for Elections Canada it’s great to be back and starting to pick up the pieces of my shattered routine. This outside job required much of me including an early wake time and daily commute between home and Vegreville. It necessitated thinking of lunches to pack even though some days there wasn’t time to grab more than a hurried nibble. Others bought lunches every day but I couldn’t see frittering away this hardearned money for food of questionable nutritional value. Not that my lunches were stellar by any means. As I got more tired the lunches got worse, quality-wise.

The job taxed my mind and body. The day the eight huge boxes of revised voters’ lists were printed was especially hard. The task of separating and packaging these thousands of sheets fell to between six and eight people over many hours.

Another gal and I were tasked with filing them into seventy-eight overstuffed folders in about eight boxes. Those folders represented the 198 polls scattered across the entire Lakeland constituency. The boxes were further separated into three basic geographic areas: Vegreville, Lloydminster, and Athabasca with multiple communities in each grouping. This was such a pressured, time-sensitive task my head was splitting with pain.

Finally, with my perverse sense of humour, I asked someone if you could get a brain tumour in one day. She looked at

me sombrely and said, “Of course.”

Lloydminster and Athabasca were what I called ‘field offices’ with their own additional assistant returning officer (AARO).

Lloydminster alone had fifty-four polls spread out over four separate locations… buildings large enough to safely accommodate voters during Covid precautions. When the Lloyd AARO brought back all the documents, supplies, and ballot boxes it took multiple people to unload his extended cab truck and horse trailer. It reminded me of the classic clown car image.

Where the hell was all this stuff coming from and when would it end?

There were many aspects of my role that required making miles in this empty car dealership showroom and garage bays or standing for hours on concrete. None of which are easy on the body. Having some offices upstairs meant that most people made multiple trips up and down those steps. Some tasks had an assembly line quality to them; the very jobs we warn our kids about if they don’t get a good education.

Repetitive jobs that required thinking and an incredible attention to detail.

I think I spent a day and a half in a small office with 22 cases of ballot books. The offgassing of fresh ink irritated my overly sensitive reaction to stinky smells.

In what, most acknowledged was record time, I filled bags with a predetermined number of ballot books. Bags and boxes got anywhere from five ballot books to over 150. Lest you think I just counted and packed, think again. Ballots have serial numbers. Using ballot control sheets, I needed to record the multi-digit serial number of the first ballot and the

last one. To make the job of sorting and distributing the ballot bags, I wrote the name of the polling place and the community it was in.

Andrew Rainbow Club is self-evident; George Buckingham House is not. Lamont Hall is selfevident; Cork Hall is not.

You get the idea. To protect the integrity of the election, the ballots are locked in a room within this alarmed building.

Speaking of protection, we all wore masks all the time. A Covid sanitizing protocol included the use of hand sanitizer and wipes. Scheduled cleaning was carried out on shared workstations, supplies, and high touch areas. When groups of people came in for the umpteen training sessions, we tried to manage people flow and stepped up the cleaning.

I wasn’t the only one to develop what amounted to bleach burns from the wipes.

If the foregoing sounds like a lot of bitching and moaning, there were benefits as well. I met and enjoyed some of my co-workers and hope never to see others again.

For someone like me who loves learning, this place was a hotbed.

There are some detailed aspects I never saw or understood except at the most superficial level.

This operation takes a team of people trying their best to handle the myriad of important details, steps, and deadlines. Someone screwing up typically has a domino effect in that most processes were connected. The unreasonable pressure exerted by the shortest campaign period allowed under legislation (thirty-six days) intensified everything for everyone. What might comfortably be accomplished in fiftyeight days needed to happen in over-drive.

though the body initially objects to physical exertion and mental stress, the physical part gets easier. I got stronger and fitter from the activity.

The big question is will this be sustainable in my normally sedentary lifestyle.

I’m also blessed that Hilary was able to rearrange her life to take my place operating a combine. I spent a couple or three hours combining this fall and can’t say I was thrilled. Another ongoing pressure was assisting an aunt prep for and hold a multi-day

garage sale as she prepared to move to the lodge. Packing up a life and downsizing is never easy and I know she appreciated our help.

So, why all this detail?

I’ve been a frontline election worker for decades but had no idea about what went on behind the scenes. I have a whole new appreciation for that. I saw some very efficient and clever people hard at work; others who seemed threatened and territorial; others so dumb I was astounded. I saw deadwood. I could easily see why this elec-

tion cost over 600 million dollars. Could things be done better, smarter, cheaper; God, I hope so.

Are democratic elections intact? Yes. Though, at moments of intense frustration, tongue-in-cheek, I longed for a Putin-type leader who poisons his rivals and cheats his way to election victory in a self-made dynasty.

Voting is a right I cherish. Working elections has been a privilege and an education. Despite all the flaws in our system of government, I urge you to do your part for the preservation of democracy, from where I sit.

Covid temporarily changes plans for monuments

BY JANA SEMENIUK The Chipman and Lamont Bus/Train Memorial Committee has made some big decisions regarding its plans to memorialize the victims and survivors of the 1960 accident.

Committee chair Tom Hrehorets said changes had to be made in light of recent COVID regulations and the amount of money that has been raised.

“When we first began fundraising, we were hoping to raise enough to fund the Lamont monument and maybe have some left over for something in Chipman,” said Hrehorets. “We never expected to have this much money.”

The committee has so far raised more than $80,000.

A collision between a packed school bus and an oncoming freight train on Nov. 29, 1960 took the lives of 17 high school students and injured 25 including the bus driver, Frank Budney, who survived.

Budney passed away in 2020 at the age of 90.

Although the students were on their way to school in Lamont, they all resided in Chipman, located 12 kilometres away.

Hrehorets said that although plans originally included having the monument installed as well as hold an unveiling ceremony by the 61st anniversary, the pandemic postponed the arrangements.

“Because of COVID, shipments of materials were delayed, and we aren’t sure when the monument will be finished,” said Hrehorets.

“And due to provincial restrictions around gath-

erings, we might not be able to have as many people there (at the unveiling) as we wanted.

So, we decided to hold off on the ceremony and may have to wait until next year even if the monument gets installed before then.”

Meanwhile, in Aug., representatives from the Village of Chipman’s seniors’ club, historical foundation, Lions club and town council met with the memorial committee to discuss a proposal; a nearly identical monument for the village of Chipman.

“The Lamont monument itself cost $35,000 so we spoke to the Village of Chipman to

see what their thoughts were on duplicating the monument for Chipman,” said Hrehorets.

“They were very receptive.”

The eight-foot wide by five-foot tall monument will be made of a mixture of granite and marble as well as display pictures of all 17 victims and the names engraved of all 25 survivors.

Chipman Mayor Tony Nygren said the suggestion was met with intense positivity.

“Everyone was very much in favour and excited to be a part of it,” she said. “They were excited because a lot of those people were related in some way to vic-

tims or survivors of the accident or were survivors themselves. It was very meaningful for everyone and I’m not just talking the community of Chipman, I’m speaking county-wide and probably bigger.”

After losing Lakeland MP election, McCormack eyes Senate seat

BY JOHN MATHER After battling to a second place finish for the Peoples Party of Canada against Lakeland Conservative incumbent Shannon Stubbs, Ann McCormack will now carry the PPC banner into the election for a senate seat.

Thirteen candidates are now in the running for the three seats up for grabs during the Oct. 18 municipal elections.

There is also no guarantee that any of the eventual winners will be appointed to the senate by the Trudeau government.

McCormack joins two others running under the Peoples Party of Canada banner, Kelly Lorencz and Nadine Wellwood.

All three ran in Alberta ridings in the recent federal election.

Three other candidates are running under the Conservative Party of Canada banner while the remainder claim to be independent.

“It seemed like such a short run for the MP seat,” she said. “By the time we got up and running we barely had three and a half weeks to campaign.”

She added being asked focuses within the PPC to run for the Senate platform.

“We’re going to contincame about as a bit of a ue to speak to people to shock to her.

“I hadn’t planned on this,” she said.

“I was kind of asked last minute and if it allows me to spread he word of the PPC, I’ll keep going.”

She said it was first discussed at a Strathmore rally attended by PPC leader Maxime Bernier.

She further worried Bill C10 will also get rubber stamped by the Senate when parliament reconvenes.

“I expect that will get rushed through so fast it will make your head spin.”

She said the three can-

didates from the PPC will split the province into thirds with McCormack taking the north, and the other two working in the central and southern parts of the province.

She said it’s more like

Four battle for three Chipman council seats

BY JOHN MATHER Four residents put their names forward to battle it out for three council seats in Chipman.

Shana McIntyre is one of two women running, both for the first time.

“I have lived in Chipman for 12 years and felt I might be able to make a change by being on council,” said McIntyre.

She readily admits she’s never sat on council and hasn’t been very involved in the community through any boards or community groups.

“I like our small town feel and really want to make the town a safe place to live and raise a family,” she adds.

Working as a supervisor at the Home Depot in Fort Saskatchewan, she adds Chipman provides a nice, small town feel while being only a short distance from the city.

McIntyre is married and the couple spend their time with a 15month old puppy. (She didn’t supply a photo for this article).

Trudy Smith also hasn’t sat on council before, but she’s travelled for 20 years in sales visiting 40 of the 50 U.S. states and criss-crossing Canada.

“I’ve never had running for council in my sights whatsoever, but I’ve had so many people come up to me and say ‘You should run for council, you should run for council,’ I decided I’d give it a try,”

she explains.

“I came to Chipman and bought a house last year, when Covid hit,” she said. “I was a fire chief in a small town in southern Alberta before, so I joined the Chipman Fire Department last year.”

She said she is fully qualified to drive the fire truck so that’s what she does.

“I’m retired so I can do what I want and have fun with it,” she adds.

She states she likes Chipman because it’s a small community but it’s still close enough to Edmonton.

“You can do what you need to do and have peace and quiet here,” she said.

She adds there is a meet the candidates night planned for October 13 at the Chipman Senior Centre beginning at 7 p.m.

“It’s an opportunity to meet the public and them to meet us and find out what we’re about,” she states. “It should be a fun evening.”

“We have the joint fire department,” Smith said.

“They just hired a new economic development officer so I think we should try to work together in areas of small business and tourism development.”

She adds no municipality should be going it alone anymore… they should all cooperate with their neighbours.

“Cooperation makes things cheaper,” she states.

“And increasing the number of smaller businesses would create some local employment.”

Graham Godlien was elected in a by-election after a council retirement and has been on council for a year and a half.

A Certified Engineering Technologist, Godlien spent 21 years with the military reaching the rank of Petty Officer First Class.

During his term on council, Godlien said in an emailed statement, he worked with the Parishioners of Bonaventure Church in teaming them up with the NAIT Capstone proj-

Palmer resigned from council midway through the term.

“Being a councillor has its ups and downs, but overall it’s been a very good experience,” he said. “It’s kind of frustrating operating as we do with little provincial funding.”

Langevin feels one of the major accomplishments of the council has been to keep the village clean and keep it going on its own, rather than having someone else come in and take control

of Chipman.

BY JANA SEMENIUK Lamont candidates for council and mayor gathered online with the Fort Saskatchewan and District Chamber of Commerce on Sept. 23 via Zoom for an all-candidates forum where they not only introduced themselves but also answered pre-submitted questions from the community.

Candidates for Mayor included current town Councillor Kirk Perrin as well as incumbent Mayor Bill Skinner, while those vying for one of the six available council seats included current members Dave Taylor, Jody Foulds, Perry Koroluk and Al Harvey as well as newcomers Linda Sieker, Matthew Levicki and recently acclaimed Elk Island Public School Board Trustee Colleen Holowaychuk.

Holowaychuk, who was first elected as trustee in 2010 and acclaimed ever since, said her experience on the school board would help her as an elected town councillor.

“Over the past 11 years I have served as a trustee for EIPS. This shows my interest really has grown into a passion through trusteeship and I have grown immensely in my knowledge of governance. I think that would serve me very well as a town councillor,” she said.

In addition, current councillor Kirk Perrin explained his decision to run for mayor.

“I’m very excited to be running for mayor and put my name on the ballot. It was through discussions with friends, family, colleagues, and people here in the community that I decided to put myself forward and give everyone a choice for Mayor this time around. I'm very proud of the work that I've accomplished with our council over the past four years,” he said.

Meanwhile, newcomers Linda Sieker and Matthew Levicki also explained their decisions to run for council. As a Lamont resident for 40 years, Seiker feels her volunteer work with various committees will make her a good candidate.

“I've been involved in many committees with celebrations and fundraisers for Lamont Fire Department, parks and rec committee, Lamont Public Library as well as the Town of Lamont and I recently retired from an accounting firm in Fort Saskatchewan after 20 years, “she said. “I have the time, the organizational skills and the availability to use my passion for the community along with my commitment to make Lamont an even better place to live.”

As the father of a young family, Levicki feels compelled to bring fresh ideas to Lamont council.

“I work in inventory and asset management with Lamont County

and have been on parental leave since my daughter was born,” he said. “I think I can bring some youth and excitement to the position. It's going to be my first time as a candidate for Council in town here and I’m looking forward to it.”

Cathy Goulet, moderator with the Fort Saskatchewan Chamber, posed seven questions to the group over the course of the evening ranging from how economic recovery from COVID would be supported to how candidates would address the currently low rate of satisfaction by residents and businesses when it comes to crime and safety as noted by a recent survey.

While most candidates were enthusiastic around increasing communication on safety, incumbent councillor Dave Taylor said the problem is currently being addressed.

“We get a report from the local Fort Saskatchewan detachment on a quarterly basis, on crime stats, crime rates or activities.

And every time they're in our meetings, we actively ask them to increase their patrol,” said Taylor. “We also have increased some funding for our bylaw contract, so we now have a contract for some peace officers to come to town on a regular basis.”

A new mayor and council will be decided after the municipal election Oct. 18.

EIPS put in proof of vaccination requirement for volunteers

BY JANA SEMENIUK Elk Island Public Schools has instituted a proof of vaccination requirement for school volunteers in spite of new provincial regulations excluding schools from the REP (Restrictions Exemption Program).

On Sept. 15, new COVID regulations were released by the province which include a choice of two options for certain in-scope businesses such as movie theatres and restaurants.

Choice one, includes a proof of vaccination requirement, known as the REP (Restrictions Exemption Program) which allows them to operate as normal if they practice mandatory masking, plus institute the REP, or require a negative COVID test. The second choice would be to follow all public health restrictions including operating at one third capacity. Outof-scope organizations, such as places of worship, retail stores and schools, are exempt from the extra requirements.

However, EIPS sent an email to parents Sep. 17 outlining its new requirements.

“Starting September 20 and until October 25, 2021, proof of a single dose is considered acceptable so long as the dose was given more than 14 days before entering the school. After October 25, proof of double vaccination is required and so long as the second shot was received 14 days prior to entry, volunteers will be admitted,” stated the email.

While a regular meeting of the school board held Sept. 16, the day after provincial regulations were announced, did not include discussions on the latest COVID measures, a special school board meeting held earlier (Sept. 2) resulted in the board voting against a proof of vaccination mandate.

When trustee Harvey Stadnick brought the motion forward for discussion at that time, he said proof of vaccination measures for anyone visiting the school were necessary.

“How can we justify having people who are not vaccinated coming to our schools where our K to nine or six students cannot be vaccinated?

How are we protecting them to the best of our abilities if we're not asking for this?” he said.

Trustee Randy Footz, of the Vegreville area, stated he was opposed to the motion.

“Residents in my area, have expressed great dissatisfaction with the existing mask policy and have also expressed dissatisfaction with the requirements for vaccination,” he said. “To represent the views of the number of people who have spoken to me, called me and emailed me, I will be opposing this motion.”

Trustee Annette Hubick of Sherwood Park echoed Footz.

“Although I am a very big supporter of the need to and the importance of getting vaccinated, I am not comfortable with imposing that requirement. I will be voting against this,” she said.

Additionally, viceboard chair trustee Colleen Holowaychuk of Lamont County, was hesitant on the motion.

“I am in favour if we have to mask our students and staff, and I would be in favour of volunteers masking as well,” she said.

“However, I am uncomfortable with having the requirement that they be vaccinated. I will vote against this.”

Discussions prompted Board Chair Trina Boymook to remove the part of the motion asking for proof of vaccination.

“Last year, we have managed to provide a safe environment for everybody to be in, because everybody was masked and that provided a measure of safety,” she said. “And this was well before vaccinations even became available.

And so, this would be my rationale against the amendment.”

The motion to remove the vaccine requirement was approved with trustees Trina Boymook, Randy Footz, Colleen Holowaychuk, Annette Hubick, and Jim Seutter supporting the removal

while trustees Skip Gordon, Harvey Stadnick and Don Irwin opposed. As a result, the motion to only require masking for all kindergarten to grade 12 students was subsequently approved.

Meanwhile, EIPS Communications Director Laura McNabb explained how the division can implement proof of vaccination of volunteers in spite of being exempt by Alberta Health Services.

“While schools are deemed an essential service and therefore not eligible to opt into the Restriction Exemption Program, school divisions can still implement additional measures when deemed appropriate — a sentiment both Alberta Education and the province’s Chief Medical Officer of Health have articulated on several occasions,” she stated by email.

“In fact, in her letter to parents on August 13, Dr. Deena Hinshaw, Alberta’s Chief Medical Officer of Health, specifically stated school divisions can, ‘continue to set COVID-19 management policies as they deem appropriate’. That being the case, EIPS is proceeding with its decision to require proof of vaccine for all volunteers entering a Division school, effective immediately.”

McNabb explained why the decision was made by superintendent Mark Liguiori and his executive team rather than the board of trustees.

“The vote September 2 referred to all visitors to the school, including parents, contractors and volunteers. The decision

made by the executive team is narrower in scope; that is, applying only to volunteers who would have close contact with students and staff for a prolonged period.

Parents who are at the school on specific business (meeting with a principal or teacher, or picking up a child, for example) and contractors who are working within the building have limited exposure to staff and no exposure within classrooms. This is an operational decision that was the purview of administration rather than the Board of Trustees,” she said.

McNabb added that there are currently no mandates for requiring vaccination of staff and students.

“This (staff requirement of vaccine) is a labour relations issue the Division is examining and school divisions do not have the authority to require proof of vaccination from students,” she said.

McNabb also stated that parents are not included with the volunteers who require proof of vaccine.

“It does not apply to parents who enter the school for a specific, short-term purpose,” she said. “Visitors and contractors are permitted in the school or workplace as long as they have a specific reason for being there and follow the sitevisitor protocol —

appointments are recommended. As well, anyone entering an EIPS school or building must complete the COVID-19 Alberta Health Daily Checklist, sign the visitor log and sanitize hands.

Masks are mandatory in all schools, on all EIPS buses and all EIPS-operated building.”

McNabb added that all COVID measures will be assessed on an ongoing basis.

All Elk Island schools to honour Truth and Reconciliation Day

BY JANA SEMENIUK All Elk Island Public Schools will be closed Sept. 30 in recognition of Truth and Reconciliation Day, the newly created federal statutory holiday meant to allow public servants an opportunity to reflect on the legacy of residential schools.

In Aug., the province of Alberta decided not to recognize Sept. 30 as a statutory holiday and left the decision of how to address the day up to individual organizations.

The one-day closure was voted on unanimously in the Sept. 2 special board meeting of EIPS trustees.

Superintendent Mark Liguiori spoke to the motion during the special meeting.

“This (Truth and Reconciliation Day) has been adopted by a number of school division within provinces, but it is not universally held throughout the province of Alberta nor with school boards throughout,” he said. “This would be a day in lieu for staff and students within the division and

there would be no further adjustments to the school calendar for the year.”

Trustee Don Irwin questioned whether schools would still meet the required amount of instructional time with one less school day in the year.

“We have done the calculation relative to instructional minutes.

And just so the board is assured, in the past, the board has exceeded the instructional time requirements. So this will bring us back to the minimum time required by the Guide to Education,” said Liguiori.

Currently 950 hours of instructional time per year are required for grades one to nine as per the Alberta.ca website.

In a statement on the EIPS website, Board Chair Trina Boymook emphasized the importance of recognizing the day.

“Reconciliation is more than a concept. We need to make it an active practice in our schools, our offices and our com-

munities,” she said. “By observing this important day across the Division, we have one more way to build respectful relationships, and promote inclusion and compas-

sion, throughout the year.”

Meanwhile, although the province of Alberta won’t be recognizing the day as a statutory holiday, all Albertans are

encouraged to reflect on the legacy of residential schools, and all Alberta government buildings will lower their flags on Sept. 30 to honour those who lost their lives.

Other provinces who won’t be recognizing the statutory holiday are Saskatchewan, New Brunswick, Quebec and Ontario.

NATIONAL DAY OF TRUTH AND RECONCILIATION --- Thursday, September 30 ---

Our offices will be CLOSED Thursday in honour of this important new federal statutory holiday.

Lougheed family turns COVID project into new business venture Leslie Cholowsky The Community Press There’s a new sensation in bacon in east central Alberta, and you can trace it back to Twin Oak Farms near Lougheed.

Dan and Shelly Skoberg and their blended family of five children live and work on the family farm. Twin Oak Farms Ltd. was established over a century ago, and the Skobergs say it has grown and evolved over the years to include a bit of everything.

And lately, that even includes producing dry cured bacon in five different flavours that’s taken the region by storm.

Skobergs farm 3,700 acres, growing wheat, barley, oats, canola, and alfalfa; do some custom farming on another 2,000 acres, and raise a variety of livestock.

“The kids have market steers that they feed and care for, for 250 days, then sell for beef to local neighbours.

“They also have about 250 laying hens that must be cared for.

“Our farm also includes horses, butcher pigs, dogs, and cats.”

The Skobergs say, “On the farm, we follow the old philosophy of ‘learn to do by doing.’”

There’s no mistaking that this is a 4-H family, and that ‘learn by doing’ guides their whole operation.

During the initial COVID lockdown, the family had just had some of their pigs butchered, and decided to take the time to come up with best recipe to dry cure and process their own bacon.

The Skobergs say, “There were a lot of trials, a few misses, and a lot of taste testing, both within their household and with extended family and friends.”

After perfecting an original recipe, they started trying some new flavour combinations, first incorporating maple, and perfecting that as well.

They say they knew they’d come up with something special when

their testers started asking for more, and more, and they ran out altogether.

As a bonus, they found that they actually enjoyed the bacon-making process, and experimenting with new flavours.

But deciding to take that jump meant a big learning curve ahead, “from nutrition labels to pack-

aging to getting government inspections, our lives got real busy, real fast, and we were loving it!”

Skobergs started selling their bacon officially by the end of 2020, and the whole venture has virtually exploded since then.

They initially started selling through social media to friends and family, and

sold out their first offering in less than a week.

“We were in shock!

That’s when we realized that we had something special,” they say. “The idea grew from something to do during COVID into a real business.”

As they and the family scrambled to keep up with demand, they told

their children: “Welcome to being an entrepreneur!”

Loving it so much that they jumped in and built ‘the bacon barn’ in 2021, a new production building specifically for processing, curing, and packaging their product.

There are now six flavours, and plans to expand into some pretty

special new products.

Wearing an orange vest makes you stand out in the trees - but not to a deer Hunters and non-hunters alike are familiar with bright orange coats, hats, vests, and other gear that is worn during hunting season.

Even though it seems counterintuitive to wear “blaze orange” in the fields or woods for fear that animals may spot you, hunters need not worry so much.

Deer typically cannot recognize blaze orange attire designed to make hunters visible to other people.

According to researchers, a combination of factors make deer less likely to be startled by blaze orange.

Deer have less binocular overlap than humans. Binocular overlap (the area that both eyes view at the same time) al-

lows focus on a single point and enables depth perception.

Deer must shift their heads much more than humans to gain a good threedimensional perspective of an object.

Deer also have fewer cones in their retinas compared to humans. Cones are photoreceptors that enable colour vision and distinguish fine details.

Furthermore, deer cannot readily perceive longer wavelengths of colour, so oranges and reds appear more like brown or gray to them.

However, deer can see blue colors more easily, so hunters may want to avoid blue jeans paired with their orange gear.

Alberta forestry companies plant 100 million trees Leslie Cholowsky The Community Press Alberta’s forest companies planted over 100 million trees in the province’s forests.

They say that figure works out to planting three trees for every one tree harvested. It also works out to 23 trees for every single Albertan, and 100,000 trees for every grizzly bear in the province.

The Alberta Forest Products Association (AFPA) says that tree species that are native to Alberta typically have a 150-year lifespan. They say without human involvement, historical fire patterns show that most trees and forests wouldn’t reach that maximum lifespan, that on average, Alberta forests would

burn every century to half-century.

“The province has significantly more mature forests as a result of sustainable forest management practices, including measures to limit the spread of wildfire.”

Alberta Ministers of Agriculture and Forestry, Devin Dreeshen says, “As the third largest resource sector in Alberta, forestry is central to our economic life and well-

being. By planting over 100 million trees in one season, Alberta’s forest companies are maintaining our proud status as world leaders in responsible forest management while increasing our competitive advantage and laying the foundations for job creation and generations of prosperity.”

Alberta forestry companies make detailed 200-year plans before harvesting is done.

These plans are reevalu-

ated every 10 years.

They also partner with researchers to apply science-based ‘best practices’ in forest management.

Once planted, new forests are tended for at least 14 years, and these companies actively support research projects on forest ecosystems and

wildlife, the AFPA says.

AFPA President Jason Krips says, “Our members take sustainability very seriously and are strongly committed to giving back more than we take to ensure the health of Alberta’s forests for now and for future generations.

“We don’t look at our forests as just an economic benefit, but rather as a resource with crucial environmental, social, and cultural benefits.”

Understanding energy use aides in cost management Leslie Cholowsky The Community Press

With inflation predicted to rise, and a forecast for natural gas prices increasing, as well as a rising carbon tax, it’s well worth the investment of time to see if improvements can be made to agricultural energy use.

Adopting energy management means looking at the energy used on the farm to understand use patterns, make choices about equipment selection, decide on appropriate energy sources or providers, and to ensure an energy system meets the demands needed for a particular operation.

One way to isolate energy usage information is to have submetres installed. These metres are installed downstream from the main utility metre, and can be used to identify energy use of a particular area or building.

The information from the submetre can help identify when peak usnea occurs, as well as identifying what activities or equipment use the most energy.

Sometimes just seeing a pattern is enough to motivate users to change small things that can reap energy savings.

When a farm has been in operation for a long time, it is possible that new options could improve the existing process and reduce the energy footprints.

Experts say there’s value in a regular review of equipment and operations to determine what makes the most sense going forward.

Another tool that can offer serious savings is to have an energy assessment, which will provide a more thorough opportunity to weigh the cost of new equipment over the energy cost that can be recouped.

Energy efficiency is doing the same thing but with less energy. Similar to energy conservation, it leads to less waste in your energy system.

One obvious solution is to replace older powered equipment with higher energy rated equipment at the end of its useful life cycle, or sooner, if the level of efficiency warrants it.

Proper maintenance to keep equipment running at maximum efficiency can also result in energy savings, so adopting a formal maintenance schedule should be part of your energy management plan.

There may be ways you can adjust your activities to see if any steps could be

eliminated or combined for an energy savings.

Some important areas to consider for energy savings include lighting, insulation, heating, refrigeration, ventilation, waterers, controllers, grain dryers, and combined heat and power needs and use.

Costs have dropped on small-scale renewable energy systems, and these can be used to power specific areas of the farm for big energy savings.

There are smaller projects that can result in savings that are as simple as changing to LED lighting, outside and in.

New innovations in LED

Even switching from fluorescent to LED tubes can result in savings, as can switching all light bulbs to LED. There have also been innovations and improvements in heating fixtures that can result in a huge jump in the efficiency of a system, resulting in less energy use for the same results.

It’s worth you while to take a look at the energy use on your farm and see where savings could be made, whether it’s small scale like replacing light fixtures, or on a larger scale.

Minister’s message for 2021 hunting season Jason Nixon AB Minister of Environment and Parks It’s easy to understand why hunting continues to be such a popular pastime here in Alberta. Our province’s diverse landscape and wildlife populations offer a memorable hunting experience that can be enjoyed with family and friends.

Alberta’s hunting heritage is rich and deeply engrained in our province.

Hunting allows us to connect meaningfully with nature and enjoy the outdoors, and provides a healthy, sustainable source of food.

Game meat is a great source of lean, organic protein and can be a nice menu change for a family dinner.

Sharing such a meal also provides an occasion for memories of the hunting experience to be shared and enjoyed again.

I am pleased to acknowledge that the number of female hunters in Alberta has increased by 72 per cent in the last five years – nearly 10,000 new female hunters have been welcomed to the sport.

This reflects the success of the entire hunting community in Alberta by driving inclusive participation in great outdoor experiences.

As the minister responsible for fish and wildlife, my focus is to ensure Alberta is home to sustainable populations of game species so we can continue to offer memorable hunting experiences, while encouraging

our young people to participate in conservation.

This requires striking the right balance between providing additional hunting opportunities, where sustainable, while implementing improved conservation measures. Doing this will ensure future generations are able to enjoy the same great hunting experience that we all enjoy today.

For new hunters, draw wait times for some special licences can be lengthy. I encourage new hunters and all experienced hunters to take advantage of the many general tag opportunities available.

This will help achieve harvest goals established to support sustainable populations while minimizing wildlife conflicts with agricultural producers, improve public safety on our roadways and address game population impacts of wildlife disease.

The COVID-19 pandemic has led many Albertans to discover or re-discover a variety of outdoor recreation activities, including hunting.

Last year saw an increase in hunting licence sales and I expect 2021 will be another strong year for hunting participation in Alberta.

Hunting is an activity that can be enjoyed safely while following all public health guidelines to help protect yourself and others against the spread of COVID-19. The latest updates and guidelines can be found at alberta.ca/ coronavirus-info-foralbertans.aspx.

Rising interest in naturally occurring humalite for crop benefits Leslie Cholowsky The Community Press

Westmoreland Mining put out a release this week that touts the benefits of naturally occurring humalite, which the company is extracting from a large deposit located near Hanna.

“Containing organic matter and high concentrations of humic acid, humalite is now drawing attention from both growers and academics, and for good reason,” the company says.

Humalite is growing in popularity, and there are presently a number of studies by farmer-led research groups: Battle River Research Group (BRRG) in Forestburg, Chinook Applied Research Association in Oyen, and Gateway Research Organization in Westock, who are partnering with Dr. Linda Gorim and her team.

They are studying the effects of humalite on wheat and canola production in Alberta.

Dr. Khalil Ahmed of BRRG says, “These three research groups are strategically located in different agroclimatic and soil zones of the province.”

Ahmed says this project will generate critical information for producers which includes data about the use and adaptability of humalite according to their soil and climatic zones.

He says, “New information will include selecting the proper humalite application for each zone, the effects of different humalite and nitrogen rates on soil properties (soil pH), N rates and soil health. At the end, producers will be able to make informed decisions about humalite usage in their farming operations.”

“Part of humalite’s appeal is that it’s natural, rather than something

you bring in from the outside or genetically modify,” says Dr. Linda Gorim. Gorim is an assistant professor/Western Grains Research Foundation (WGRF) chair in cropping systems, Department of Agricultural, Food and Nutritional Sciences at the University of Alberta (U of A).

“We are especially fortunate in Alberta to have one of the highest valued humalite deposits in the world, as it consists of up to 70 per cent humic acid.”

She adds, “Local farmers have already started buying humalite and putting it on their fields, and I’ve heard from some that say it cuts down on fertilizer use.

“This study will apply different humalite and fertilizer rates, looking at how humalite affects crop performance, the interaction of humalite and soil, and the optimal humalite rates per acre for growers.”

In light of the devastating drought across the Prairies this year, humalite’s ability to hold moisture is also a key aspect of the study.

“If we had been applying this substance to the soil in 2021, it would have helped maintain moisture and allowed plants to grow in spite of drought conditions,” says Dr. Thilakarathna, an assistant professor in plantmicrobial interactions in Dr. Gorim’s department at the U of A. “Those crops would still have suffered drought stress, but humalite could have worked to minimize the damage.”

Though scientists have yet to analyze any data, Dr. Thilakarathna observed the first trial this summer under dry conditions. He noticed that wheat plots where humalite was applied contained less stressed plants that stood much better

than their counterparts in the non-humalite plots.

BRRG’s Dr. Ahmed adds, “We are very thankful to Results Driven Agriculture Research and Westmoreland Mining for funding this project.”

One farmer in Sturgeon County, Dan Majeau, says he’s already seen some very positive results from humalite application.

A person may have to change an ingredient to avoid a food allergy, or he or she may swap something out to make a dish more nutritious. Some substitutions can change the texture or even taste of the overall recipe, as no substitution can mimic the original ingredient exactly. However, a home cook will often find the results are acceptable, and may even prefer them to the “real” thing.

Here are some common substitutions to try.

Original ingredient: White flour Substitution: Whole wheat flour, nut flour White flour lacks many nutrients because the grain has been largely stripped of its most important parts before being ground. Whole wheat flour has extra fibre that aids in digestion and can lower risk for certain diseases. Those with a gluten intolerance can use nut flours, like almond flour.

Whole wheat flour and nut flours are denser than white flour, so you may need to experiment with 3⁄4 cup to 1 cup of white flour ratios in recipes.

Original ingredient: Sugar Substitution: Applesauce Sugar is the foundation of

many baked goods, but too much sugar provides empty calories and can contribute to various illnesses if eaten in large quantities.

Swapping one cup of unsweetened applesauce for one cup of sugar can provide sweetness with more health benefits, such as added fibre and vitamins.

Original ingredient: Oil or butter Substitution: Fruit or vegetable puree Try adding pureed carrot, banana, pumpkin, or apples to recipes to boost moisture.

These ingredients also add extra flavour and nutrients.

The ratio is generally oneto-one for the replacement.

However, cooks may want to experiment to find the best ratio for their recipes.

Original ingredient: Buttermilk Substitution: Milk and lemon juice If you don’t have buttermilk on hand or if you feel that it is too high in calories, mix enough milk (low fat if desired) with enough lemon juice or light vinegar to reach 1 cup.

Water Substitution: Stock Make a batch of vitaminand nutrient-rich vegetable stock to use with foods that are boiled, such as pastas and rices. The stock will add flavour and nutrition.

Original ingredient: Egg Substitution: Vinegar, baking powder and liquid (baking) or egg substitute (cooking) When baking, 1⁄2 teaspoon of baking powder plus 1 tablespoon vinegar plus 1 tablespoon of a liquid can replace an egg in the recipe if you’re avoiding

eggs.

Original ingredient: Sour cream Substitution: Plain Greek yogurt Greek yogurt, with its natural helpful probiotic bacteria, can be a healthy substitution for sour cream in dips, dressings and other recipes that call for sour cream or even mayonnaise.

“There was a deterioration in pH levels and growing acidity, and we knew something had to be done.

“We applied 100 lbs. of humalite to our fields every year for three years.

“In reviewing soil samples from before and after, we saw pH levels returning to normal following humalite application and an overall improvement in soil health.”

For Majeau’s crops, those benefits were just the beginning. He found that humalite helped release nutrients, im-

proved soil aeration and increased microbial activity, which is another component of healthy soil.

“Humalite accelerates crop residue breakdown and increases water retention, as it holds ten times its weight in water,” explains Majeau.

“We apply it in granular and liquid form, and have seen better germination and emergence in both cases.”

Majeau says, “I’m encouraged by other study results that are already published, and even more so by our ability to cut nitrogen use by 10 to 20 per cent.

“There is no one magic bullet that addresses all of our needs, so it’s about putting the right pieces together, and humalite is a big piece of the puzzle.”

Nathan Sereda Newo Global Energy Making energy improvements to your home can save you money, make your home more comfortable, and reduce your impact on the planet, but the upfront investment can sometimes seem prohibitive. That’s where the Greener Homes Grant comes in.

Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) has developed a program that allows eligible homeowners to access funding up to $5,600 to upgrade their

homes and reduce their energy footprint. The program is very simple to take part in, with just a few steps to keep in mind.

First, homeowners need to register with the Greener Homes program and provide all necessary identification documents. This includes proof of residence and ownership. (Funding is only available for older homes; newly built structures are not included.)

Second, an EnerGuide evaluation will need to be carried out by a certified evaluator (visit www.nrcan.gc.ca for a list

of service providers near you). The evaluator will conduct an energy audit of your home and identify areas of improvement.

Based on this list, different amounts of funding are available for various upgrades. Eligible retrofit categories include insulation, air-sealing, windows and doors, thermostats, water heaters, renewable energy (e.g. solar), and energy resiliency.

Once a list of recommended improvements has been consulted and the selected ones chosen, it is time to install the up-

grades.

Any mechanical or electrical work must be done by a licenced and trained professional. All receipts and records will be submitted to NRCan by your evaluator, however homeowners need to keep copies until March 31, 2028. (Any retrofits or EnerGuide evaluations that you may have completed before Dec. 1, 2020, are not eligible for reimbursement.)

Following completion of your retrofits (which could reduce your energy usage and greenhouse gas emissions by over 50 per cent),

it is time to have a postretrofit evaluation of your home.

With this you will receive an EnerGuide rating and label for your home. An EnerGuide label is an officially recognized record of

your home’s energy performance, which can be a useful document when considering selling your home.

Favourable commodity price and interest rates

Strong commodity prices combined with low interest rates continue to sustain farmland value increases in most parts of Canada, according to a mid-year review by Farm Credit Canada.

“While the drought across most of Western Canada and the pandemic have captured most of the headlines, strong commodity prices and low interest rates have been quietly supporting a vibrant farmland market for the first six months of 2021,” said J.P. Gervais, FCC’s chief economist.

“Higher-than-normal prices for wheat, canola and corn have improved the profitability of many operations in the second half of 2020 and early 2021, putting them in a better position to invest in farmland as the opportunities arise.”

Average farmland values in Canada are once again showing steady increases for the first half of 2021, although the full impact of widespread drought this summer has yet to be weighed.

The average value of Canadian farmland increased by 3.8 per cent for the first half of this year, compared to an average increase of 3.7 per cent for the same time last year.

This increase is in line with mid-year results over the past six years, which showed singledigit increases for the full year.

In general, Prairie and Atlantic provinces reported the most modest increases, while Ontario, British Columbia and Quebec had the largest increases.

Buyers from different sectors are competing for the limited amount of land on the market.

Interest rates declined at the outset of the pandemic and remain historically low, which is also

supporting the demand for farmland and weakening the supply of available land for sale in the market.

“While many crop producers have benefited from the high commodity prices and have been able to take advantage of low interest rates to buy land, not everyone is in the same boat,” Gervais said.

“The outlook for revenues is murkier for 2021 and 2022 given exceptional production challenges in parts of the country.”

Livestock producers, for example, have seen their cost of production increase and profits shrink as a result of the drought.

“The overall economic environment of the next 12 months bears watching. The possibility of higher interest rates, inflationary pressures and the demand for ag commodities could influence the demand for farmland,” Gervais said.

He recommends farm operators continue to exercise caution, especially in regions where the rate of farmland values growth significantly exceeded that of farm income in recent years.

Two popular new ways to cook turkey picking up steam Thanksgiving is a beloved holiday and is fast approaching again on the long weekend of October 11.

Families may have their own unique Thanksgiving traditions, but one staple of this kickoff to the holiday season is bound to make its way to Thanksgiving dinner tables no matter how unusual families' holiday celebrations may be: turkey.

Much effort goes into picking and preparing a Thanksgiving turkey. Depending on the size of the bird, turkeys can take many hours to cook. Thanksgiving celebrants are no doubt familiar with ovenroasted turkey, which is the most traditional way to cook turkey. But this year hosts who want to expand their horizons and think beyond the oven can consider two popular alternative methods to cooking a Thanksgiving turkey.

1. Deep frying Deep frying is a popular way to prepare foods at outdoor events. For example, stroll through the parking lot on game day and you're liable to find football fans deep frying their favorite foods at their tailgate parties. Turkey can be deep fried and this method makes for an ideal option for hosts who want to enjoy the great outdoors while welcoming friends and loved ones to their homes. Deep frying imparts a juicy flavor that can be hard to replicate when roasting a turkey.

Deep frying is a much faster way to cook a turkey than cooking it in the oven. However, deep frying also can be more dangerous, so it's imperative that cooks remain attentive when setting up the fryer and while the turkey is frying.

Where to deep fry the turkey also bears consideration. The turkey experts at Butterball® recommend deep frying the turkey outside on a flat surface that's far away from structures, including your home, garage, deck, etc.

The time required to deep fry a turkey will depend on the size of the bird, but experts note that it typically takes about 3 to 3.5 minutes per pound. Electric fryers may take significantly less time and they typically require less oil, so this is another option to consider.

Many experts note that it's best to deep fry turkeys that are 15 lbs. or less, as the turkey will need to be completely submerged in oil when frying. In addition, turkeys larger than 15 lbs. may cook unevenly, which can affect flavor.

2. Smoking Smoking has grown in popularity in recent years as grills that make this method possible have become more affordable. Smoking is a "low and slow" method of cooking, so this option is ideal for people who intend to be home all day on Thanksgiving and want to infuse their birds with a smoky flavor. However, even

busy hosts can still consider smoking, as electric smokers now allow cooks to remotely control the temperatures in their grills. That's important, as smoking requires cooks to periodically check the temperature on their grills to ensure it has not dropped too low or risen too high.

Smoking a turkey typically requires maintaining a temperature between 225 and 250 F. Cooking times for smoked turkeys are typically around 30 minutes per pound, though it can take longer if the temperature is lower. Because of the extended cooking time, hosts may want to pick a turkey that weighs around 15 lbs., especially if they don't have much experience smoking.

How do you know if you need new tires?

Though vehicles can't function without them, tires are something few drivers think about until something goes wrong.

A roadside flat tire or a tire rotation recommendation from a mechanic during a routine oil change appointment may be the only time many drivers give much thought to their tires.

The automotive resource Kelley Blue Book notes that the life expectancy of most tires falls between 35,000 and 60,000 km.

That's a big gap, and car owners can check their vehicle manuals to see if their vehicle manufacturer recommends a more specific replacement interval.

It's worth noting that mileage is not the only barometre drivers should use to determine if they need to buy new tires. The following tips can help drivers determine if now is the time to outfit their vehicle with new tires.

• Measure the tread. KBB notes that a tire assessment should always include measuring the amount of remaining tread. Drivers can do this on their own in various ways. One method involves looking at the tread wear bars, which are little bridges in the grooves between the ridges. If the bars are even with the tread pattern, then the tire has very little tread remaining and must be replaced. The penny or quarter test is a popular way to determine if tires must be replaced. In-

sert a penny or quarter into the centre of the tread between two ridges with Lincoln's or Washington's head facing you. If you can see the very top of the head or the space above the head, the tire must be replaced. If only a little bit of hair is visible, then the tire is nearing its end. The tire has sufficient remaining tread if the some of the forehead is concealed.

• Check for other signs of wear and tear. Little remaining tread is not the only sign tires must be replaced. Tires with cracked sidewalls, discolouration and/or bulging need to be replaced.

• Confirm a larger issue isn't lurking. Uneven wear on tires is typically a byproduct of a larger issue.

Though tires that have worn unevenly will need to be replaced, replacing them without correcting the larger issue will only lead to more uneven wear on the new tires. That's a costly mistake. KBB notes that poor wheel alignment or suspension issues are typically to blame for uneven wear. This issue can be fixed and should be addressed prior to purchasing a new set of tires.

Tires sometimes exhibit telltale signs that they need to be replaced.

Before buying replacement tires, drivers can inspect their existing ones and ask their mechanic to confirm that a larger issue isn't affecting their performance.

Crafted program that helps local entrepreneurs by helping to increase their exposure, help them develop and build their customer base, and connect them with any resources they need.

Flagstaff Crafted tries to enhance that support through strong story telling, and have provided the Skobergs with the opportunity to tell their story.

They were recently one of several featured sellers in a Pop-Up market at selected Wild Rose Co-op locations in Flagstaff County.

Skoberg says he’s approached other retail outlets to carry the product, and has found that they’ve already looked at the Flagstaff Crafted and Twin Oak Farms before he enters the initial meeting. Both Skobergs like the focus of the Flagstaff Crafted program, which is on the story, not just the product. Dan says that’s what really connects with the customers.

It’s not just about making the product, it’s also promoting the product, often in person, that builds the business. Skobergs say, “It’s another thing 4-H made easier. We feel comfortable

talking to perfect strangers about our story, and engaging them in our product.”

Right now the business is curing 100 pounds a day, smoking 100 pounds a day, and slicing 100 pounds a day, Dan says. “That’s soon to be 200 pounds.” The pork bellies are cured for eight days, then smoked for three hours. They even hired their first employee to work on the production line, and are looking for a second.

They retail in 14 locations, as well as selling directly from their own website.

Skobergs deliver the frozen packages of product to retailers presently in a number of locations in Flagstaff and in Beaver County too, but also sell directly from their website: twinoakfarmsbacon.com Skobergs say their recent participation in the pop-up market was extraordinary.

“We had no idea what the response would be.” They soon found out. The pop up markets run for four days, Wednesday to Saturday. Skobergs ran out of product by noon the first day, and brought double the next day, also selling

out.

Skoberg said he was proud to promote not only a local product, using local ingredients, but also a healthy product, “The salt content alone was enough to convince many people to try it.”

Dan’s working on a new, very innovative product he’s currently keeping

under wraps as he works out the process.

They are also contemplating new flavours, saying that the present six flavours all sell fairly evenly. “We’ve tried some new flavours in house that we haven’t introduced yet.”

They’re also already planning to expand the

bacon barn, adding more coolers, and a potential addition/extension, to keep up with the demand for their product.

Why would an already busy family take on something like this? “Why not?” was their response, right in line with their philosophy: “We are a family that enjoys being busy.

A universal problem: how to spot signs of cyberbullying Despite its relative infancy, the internet has become so prevalent in daily life that it’s hard to imagine a time when it wasn’t so widely available.

Yet that time wasn’t so long ago. In fact, many adults who are now entering or in middle-age made it through their secondary educations without the internet. That’s not so for today’s students, and that divide can sometimes make it difficult for parents to spot signs that their children are victims of cyberbullying.

Cyberbullying refers to the use of electronic communication to bully a person, typically by sending intimidating and/or threatening messages.

These messages may be sent in various ways, including through apps or via social media platforms. According to StopBullying.gov research has shown that a quick and consistent response to bullying is an effective way to convey that such behaviour is unacceptable. But parents first must learn to recognize signs of cyberbullying, which is not always as easy to spot as other bullying behaviors.

The Anti-Defamation League notes that hateful words and rumors are often a component of cyberbullying. In such instances, that abuse can follow young people home, giving them the idea that the bullying is inescapable.

In decades past, bullying victims could at least see their homes as safe havens. That’s no longer the case, which is why it’s vital that parents learn to recognize the signs of cyberbullying.

Young people may exhibit their own unique symptoms if

they’re being victimized by cyberbullies. In addition, the ADL notes that parents can look for these signs and then take immediate action if they suspect their children are being cyberbullied.

• A child becomes upset, sad, or angry during or after being online or using their phone.

• A child withdraws from family or friends.

• A child expresses reluctance or refuses to participate in activities previously enjoyed.

• A child has an unexplained decline in grades.

• A child refuses to

go to school or expresses anger or dissatisfaction with a specific class or school in general.

• A child increasingly reports symptoms of illness for which he or she wants to stay at home.

• A child shows signs of depression or sadness.

The ADL urges parents who see any of these signs to respond to them immediately.

Take a gentle, supportive tone during any discussions with children, making sure to express your concerns while also listening to the child when he or she

explains what is so upsetting.

Parents who have confirmed or suspect their child is a victim of

cyberbullying should contact their children’s school immediately.
