BATTLE RIVER-CROWFOOT RIDING Incumbent MP for Battle River Crowfoot Damien Kurek has once again won his riding. With 251 of 252 polls reporting at press time, Kurek had a total of 40,184 votes, good for 71 per cent of the total share for the constituency. The NDP and People’s Party candidates gave Kurek more of a challenge in this election than in 2019, each getting over 5,000 votes. Tonya Ratushniak of the NDP got 5,481 votes, or 10 per cent of the share. Dennis Trepanier of the PPC received 5,269 votes, for just under 10 per cent. Maverick Party’s Jeff Golka and Liberal Party’s Leah McLeod each received four per cent of the vote count, while Green’s Daniel Brisbin and Veterans Coalition Party’s John Irwin combined for about one per cent. From a national standpoint, the Liberal Party was once again victorious,

but failed to secure a majority government with just 158 seats at press time (148 were elected, 10 were leading). As a result, Justin Trudeau remains the Prime Minister of Canada for a third term. The Conservatives trailed with 119 seats (won plus leading at press time), a drop of two seats overall from 2019. Many party leaders in their concession speeches questioned the reasons for the election, as Canada saw very little difference in results from two years earlier along with Trudeau’s inability to secure a Liberal majority government. Conservative leader Erin O’Toole speculated that in 18 months, another federal election could be called. Political pundits on CBC and CTV’s live coverage felt this is less certain, though, given the cost of the past two elections combined with the ongoing COVID-19 crisis.
