Hardisty Emergency Room re-opens after three years of closure

Hardisty Health Centre’s Emergency Department has reopened after being closure for over three years. AHS reports that the ED will operate from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. for right now, and a plan to increase staffing to allow it to return to 24-hour services is in place.

Leslie Cholowsky Editor

Alberta Health Services (AHS) announced on Monday, Sept. 18, that the Hardisty Emergency Department will be reopening after more than three years of temporary closure. “With the arrival of newly recruited staff, and more arriving in the coming weeks, resources are in place to support reopening the emergency department.” Emergency Department services resumed in Hardisty Monday at 7 a.m. and will operate Monday to Friday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. AHS says expanded hours are to be added over time as staffing allows. Camrose MLA Jackie Lovely says, “I’m glad to see that after three years of engagement and efforts, Alberta Health Services has been successful in attracting the necessary talent to reopen the Hardisty emergency department. “I’m hopeful we can continue to attract healthcare workers to the community to ensure the hospital remains fully functioning and serving the community to its full potential for years to come.” Originally closed in April 2020 as part of pandemic capacity planning, AHS says that closure of the ED and utilizing Hardisty’s four acute care spaces to care for continuing care patients helped create acute care capacity in higher-acuity sites, while also helping protect vulnerable seniors from

COVID-19 exposure. AHS says, “Since that time, recruiting appropriate numbers of nursing staff - including registered nurses (RN) and licensed practical nurses – needed to support all site services has been a challenge. Available RN staffing was dedicated to long-term care to avoid having to relocate residents while recruitment continued to support the ED returning to service.” Chief Zone Officer for AHS Central Zone Janice Stewart says, “AHS has remained committed to reopening the emergency department from the beginning, and we are very grateful for the patience of our care teams, the community and our partners while we worked to make this happen. “Our teams have worked diligently to recruit several new staff to support the Hardisty Health Centre whom the community is helping to welcome with open arms. “We appreciate the dedication of our staff in Hardisty, as well as the patience and understanding of them and the community, as we worked towards reopening the emergency department.” AHS says in along with new staff members already in place, internationally educated nurses will also be working with the site’s care team in the coming weeks. “Additionally, AHS leadership is working with area physicians and rural locum physicians to establish a physician pool that will help provide weekend

coverage as part of the plan to restore full ED services.” Hardisty physician Dr. Isidore Ivare says, “It is thrilling news for the community. It has been a long wait but I’m grateful the emergency department is reopening. “I commend the community leaders and other stakeholders in Hardisty for their tireless efforts at advocating for our reopening, and our local AHS leadership for following through on their promise to reopen our ED.” Hardisty Mayor Wayne Jackson says, “The hospital is a pillar in our community and, on behalf of Council, I want to express my gratitude for the hard work and effort that went into getting the emergency department reopened. “Having access to emergency care right here in the community is important for not only those of us who call Hardisty home but for our industry neighbours who operate in the area. “We have great healthcare professionals here and I look forward to the emergency department hours expanding as soon as possible.” AHS says it will continue to recruit using a number of different strategies, including working with community committees like the Flagstaff Community Health Services Working Group to attract and keep staff in Hardisty and the Rural Health Professionals Action Plan (RhPAP) along with other stakeholders.

Killam piper hoping to join Rose Bowl Parade on New Years’ day Leslie Cholowsky Editor

Delin Watmough, of Killam, has been accepted to perform on the bagpipes in the Pipes on Parade massed pipes and drums band at this year’s Rose Bowl Parade in Pasadena, California on Jan. 1, 2024. His wife Stephanie Crouse saw some information about the event, and encouraged Watmough to send in an audition tape. “Heck no,” was his first response, he says, thinking he wasn’t good enough to be accepted. “She wore me down, though, and we finally made a video of me playing and sent it in.” Watmough says the video had to be of him playing a medley on the pipes, and, as a member of the Battle River Pipes and Drums, he used a competition medley he’d been practising with the band. “I’m a beginner, I know that,” he says. Watmough just started learning to play the bagpipes in 2019. Beginner or no, the couple got the great news that Delin has been accepted just a week or so ago. He says, “I got a callback, and that cinched it. They recognize that I’m a beginner, but told me my strike-ins and cut-offs were clean and sharp.” Watmough credits his teacher, Doug Brown of Forestburg, for that, “He makes us practise those all the time.” Now Watmough has two challenges ahead. He’s currently practising a new set list for the big event on New Year’s Day, but now he also has to save enough money to pay for the trip. All expenses for the trip, including travel and accommodation, come out of pocket. He estimates that between the two of them, they’ll be looking at around $6-6,500.

He’s planning to attend some highland festivals this fall where he’ll do some busking with the pipes, hoping he can cover some of the expenses that way. Watmough says there’s three levels of dress code that are acceptable to the mass band, which will comprise 150 pipers, the biggest band he’s ever been a part of. Promotions for the band say this, “At the ringing in of every new year, the entire world unites in singing a simple Scottish song, Auld Lang Syne and for the first time, the Pipes on Parade will perform the song in the 2024 Rose Parade. “The Pipes On Parade: The Massed Pipes & Drums, is a composite pipe band consisting of 10 bands from Southern California including The Pasadena Scots, The Los Angeles Scots, Rancho Cucamonga Fire Pipes and Drums, the University of California Riverside Pipes & Drums, Glendora High School, Helix High School, as well as a band made up of individuals not currently members of an active band or band that is not performing anywhere at that time, from all over the world. “The band's uniforms will be a blending of each band's standard uniform and include some degree of highland attire; the Glengarry cap, waistcoat, kilt, sporran and the high laced Scottish shoes, ghillie brogues.” Luckily Watmough has everything he needs. He just recently purchased a new kilt this summer at a festival in the Thompson tartan, his wife’s family tartan. So that’s what he will wear in Pasadena, in her honour. Watmough says he’s also purchased a special set of pipes, not willing to take a risk on taking his best set on the trip, just in case. He says the Rose Bowl Parade stretches out over

The Community Press

a five-mile route. “It has breaks built in, but there’s one quarter-mile stretch where we will play continuously.” One of the other highlights of the event will be a battle of the bands, where the Pipes on Parade will compete against every other band in the parade. The group will also be playing on Main Street at Disneyland. “That will be a highlight for me, and especially for my kids,” he says. He’s hopeful that everything comes together and he’s able to go, which will be the trip of a lifetime for this new piper.

Delin Watmough of Killam has been accepted to play in a mass bagpipe band, Pipes on Parade, at the Rosebowl Parade in Pasedena this coming New Year.

Wheat Kings welcome Bob Charchun back for ninth season Leslie Cholowsky Editor

The North Eastern Alberta Junior B Hockey League has started exhibition games already for the upcoming season, and the Killam Wheat Kings will play their first game this coming Friday, Sept. 22, in Wainwright against the Bisons. The league has eight teams this year, the Wainwright Bisons, Cold Lake Ice, Killam Wheat Kings, Lloydminster Bandits, St. Paul Canadiens, Vermilion Tigers, Vegreville Rangers, and while the Onion Lake team is shown, no games are presently scheduled for them. The first regular season games will start on Friday, Sept. 29, and Killam’s first home game will be Saturday, Sept. 30. The Wheat Kings welcome Head Coach Bob Charchun back for his ninth season with the team. The team held their camp/tryouts from Sept. 5 to 9 at the Killam Memorial Arena. Charchun says, “We got things going a couple of weeks ago and have had some good skates so far.

“We are down to about 25 kids in camp and we will continue to evaluate all players until our season starts at the end of the month.” He adds that the upcoming exhibition game against Wainwright this weekend will be a good measuring tool as to where the team is at. Charchun adds, “I’m expecting Wainwright to be strong once again.” Last year the team had four retiring players, including Matthew Pfeffer, Kohl Forster, Carter Burton, and Ashton Kelly. Charchun says, “We have a good number of guys who are back

which will add some important experience to our lineup. We did lose some key guys as well, and they will be difficult to replace for sure. There is some real opportunity for new guys to come in and grab a spot. “We are looking for guys like Jordan Gagnon to lead our team this year as he is back from Jr. A camp in Camrose where he showed very well. “Ty Marcinkowski will be a key piece as well coming off an MVP season last year and the top goaltender in the league. “Trey Forster will anchor our back end and

returning guys like Kobe Charchun, Kale Hurlburt, and Rhett and Kyler Bergseth will be looked upon to provide key roles as well. “We do have some young guys coming in as well and will have to be patient with their progress.” The Wheat Kings had a great season last year, finishing in third place overall in the regular season, and making it to the semi-finals in the playoffs before being eliminated by the Bisons, who went forward into the finals, defeating St. Paul for the league championship.

looking forward to growing as a new team and being competitive once again this year.”

JOHN’S RANT

Jann… you doth protest too much!

Aw, poor Jann Arden. Who knew your popularity had tanked so low you had to go to X to voice your displeasure with Pierre Poilievre issuing a few words to the faithful on a flight from Quebec to Calgary. The flight was added to Westjet’s schedule to ferry western Canadian delegates from the national Conservative Party convention, held in Quebec, back home to western Canada. Poilievre got his hands on the in flight PA and said a few cheery words to the passengers on the flight. A speech lasting all of 45-seconds. Well that triggered Arden, who wasn’t anywhere near the flight. The speech was posted to Twitter and shows the dangers of social media. It forced Arden out from under her rock to bleat in the ethernet,

“Westjet … You and I will not be doing business ever again. This is so ridiculously disappointing.” Later, sensing some promotion possibilities, the CUPE Alberta president, which represents the Westjet flight crew, Alia Hussain said the cabin crew had no input into the decision to allow Poilievre to use the P.A. system and demanded an apology from the Conservative leader. Would he had demanded an apology if his master of the universe Jagmeet Singh had said a few words? How about Justin Trudeau? However the Westjet CEO Alexis von Hoenbroech said, “The leader of the party was given the opportunity to greet delegates onboard (which is not unusual), but this was not a political endorsement nor should it be interpreted as such. We are

non-partisan by nature and will revisit our policy on this.” Now Arden and Hussain should know, I’ve flown on Westjet flights where the cabin crew sang ‘Happy Birthday’ to a passenger celebrating their special day. Westjet flight crews have been known to tell jokes during a flight and have fun with their passengers. Not having flown for a few years, I can’t say whether this is still the case but it certainly used to be part of Westjet appeal as a commercial airline. On an inaugural flight to Chicago from Edmonton many years ago, then Edmonton Mayor Bill Smith said a few words to the passengers about the benefits of the new route. People have used the PA systems on planes for many years. Ask permission from the cabin

crew and if it's an innocuous message or something bringing good cheer, they generally have no problem with this. Poilievre actually stated he would like an apology from Hussain for trying to silence free speech. He added people on the plane were delighted with his remarks. So Jann, go back to making your music and getting on the talk show circuit. That’s what you are known for, stick with it. You aren’t an influencer, at least certainly not in my books. And again I actually hate the term social media influencer. What qualifies someone for this ridiculous moniker? And Mr. Union boss … Pierre isn’t going to apologize to you for having some fun with his supporters. Remember Westjet added this

flight to their schedule for one day. No, it wasn’t a charter, but it was a special flight. And CTV Calgary is going as far as to find out if there were non-delegates on the flight who may have been offended by the idea of Pierre saying a few words. Remember it was 45-seconds. Has Elizabeth May, the queen of green, or Jagmeet Singh, the wannabe prime minister with no hope in hell, ever said anything in a short 45-seconds? This incident was one of the best non-stories of a week ago. And sadly, it just points out how stupid the mixture of politics, social media and the inability to converse in a normal way have deteriorated in our country under the leadership of Justin Trudeau. JOHN MATHER

CAMROSE MLA JACKIE LOVELY Report from the Legislature Last week’s release of Statistics Canada’s August 2023 Labour Force Survey shows that Alberta is leading the country in employment growth. According to the update, 17,700 additional Albertans found employment, with an increase of 99,100 employed Albertans since August of last year. The unemployment rate fell to 5.7 per cent while the number of full-time jobs grew to 2.1 million – fueling job growth across numerous sectors. Alberta’s job numbers continue to tell a truly dynamic economic story. With more families and Albertans able to count on regular paycheques, building a future and finding great jobs here in Alberta gives our province yet another advantage.

Our government’s commitment to attract investment and create jobs is working. Thanks to the efforts of our United Conservative government, businesses are able to keep growing and major companies like Coca-Cola, Teknol, and Flair Airlines are choosing to invest here. This is great news for families and businesses in Camrose, who can count on our government to continue creating an investment friendly environment that encourages new employment growth and ensures Albertans can count on good jobs for years to come. “Our efforts to make life more affordable are working. Alberta’s inflation rate has generally been below the national average – while average weekly

earnings are seven per cent higher than the national average. Long term, the employment trends are favourable too. In the last 12 months, Alberta’s employment has grown by 4.1 per cent, above the national average of 2.5 per cent,” Jobs, Economy and Trade Minister Matt Jones said, following the update. During the recent celebration of Alberta Day, we came together to recognize our province’s remarkable story and history. It seems fitting that we follow these celebrations with such encouraging economic updates, demonstrating Alberta’s resiliency and determination in keeping our province strong and free. Alberta’s leading job numbers also show our province’s ability to bounce

back from the disastrous leadership of the NDP. We have cleaned up the mess the NDP left behind and are keeping Alberta on a promising path toward sustained job growth and prosperity. Our United Conservative government will ensure Alberta’s economy continues to thrive by delivering jobs, investment and stability for Alberta families and businesses. Town of Suspect sketch released after attempted child abduction Hardisty signs five-year airport agreement with GCS Energy Leslie Cholowsky Editor

Hardisty Town Council voted to sign an agreement with GCS Energy Services in August, renting the Hardisty Airport lands to the company for a five-year term. For an annual payment of $1, GCS will have exclusive possession of the airport lands, and be responsible for necessary runway upkeep at its cost, but may not cut down trees, remove fences, nor develop resources such as sand, gravel, or clay. Hardisty CAO Bobbi Usselman says, “As the main user of the facility, GCS Energy was willing to enter into the agreement to continue to operate the airport, as financially, the operation was becoming less and less affordable for the Town of Hardisty taxpayers.” She says under the agreement, “GCS Energy, as the operator, will determine the usage of the airport and bear the operating costs; with the Town of Hardisty continuing to provide insurance coverage.” In the Town’s 2023 Operating and Capital budget airport expenses were estimated at $34,750, including salaries for maintenance and upkeep performed by town employees, and another $10,000 in repair and maintenance, with $7,000 in contracted services.

In the early evening of July 26, Wetaskiwin RCMP received a report of a possible attempted child abduction. Investigators were advised that seven-yearold and 15-year-old youths were walking on a side street in Pigeon lake when they were approached by a woman who exited her vehicle and started to speak to them. After a short conversation, the woman grabbed the seven-yearold. The child was able to break free and both youth ran away. After continued investigation, RCMP have released a composite

Use caution near coyotes as they cause conflict in populated areas Leslie Cholowsky Editor With most of the urban centres in the Flagstaff Region lying adjacent to rich agricultural areas, coyotes can often encroach on the towns and villages. Alberta Fish and Wildlife say one of the reasons why coyotes come into urban centres is food. “Never unintentionally feed coyotes. Pet food, garbage, and fruit fallen from trees might be available. Reduce your chances of attracting coyotes by removing these items from your yard.” They also recommend cleaning up dropped bird seed, or suet, and fallen fruit, as these can attract mice and squirrels, which in turn attracts coyotes.

Motion activated lights can help scare off coyotes at night. Keep cats indoors, and don’t let dogs play outside unsupervised, experts advise. Keeping yards clean of pet feces is also recommended, as this can also attract coyotes. Alberta Parks and Wildlife says if you encounter a coyote, “Make the experience unpleasant for the animal. Make it feel unwelcome in your neighbourhood.” To do this, they say, “Respond to their presence aggressively by making yourself appear larger. Wave your arms overhead, or thrust long objects like a walking stick toward the coyote. Throw rocks or sticks at the animal. “Shout in a deep voice and maintain eye

contact.” If a coyote continues its approach, they advise to back away slowly, and not to turn away and run, which could encourage the animal to chase you. If you encounter an aggressive animal, phone the Report-A-Poacher number at 1800-642-3800 and report the details of your encounter. Children should be taught never to run from a coyote, but to yell at them and make themselves look bigger by waving their arms in the air. Coyotes should never be approached, nor fed. Cats and even small dogs can easily become prey for coyotes, and should be kept inside, especially at night. If you en-

counter a coyote while walking your dog, small dogs should be picked up, and larger dogs should be leashed and under your control. Back away slowly, and leave the area immediately. Coyote sightings are more common in summer and fall as young animals are exploring their surroundings. Coyotes are most active at night, usually spending the day sleeping or resting, but they can adapt their behaviours if they find reliable food sources. Municipalities are authorized to help with coyote concerns, so it’s a good idea to make them aware if you have any encounter with a coyote within town or village limits.

Coming in October! Sunday, Sept. 3 marked the last service held in the Hughenden United Church building. The church is swapping places with the Thrift Shop for all future services. During the special ‘transition’ service, this encased sealed frame holding the original key that belongs to the church building was presented to the church trustees. These four seniors had the honour of getting their picture taken with this special key: From left, Mary Carson, Shirley Manning, Ed Carson, and Dave Todd.

We look forward to seeing you!

THE VICTIM OF INSURANCE FRAUD IS YOU

WE WANT YOU TO BE AWARE Some people think of insurance fraud as a victimless crime. They say it’s just a big, impersonal corporation that will have to pay, as if that makes it more acceptable. Of course, that isn’t the case. Fraud is never acceptable. And, in the end, It’s you, the honest policy holders who are robbed. They cheat, you pay! Insurance fraud is a crime, and we urge you to treat it as you would any other crime. Report it. If you know of an incident, call the Police or Crimestoppers.

OBITUARIES

Irene Eloise Stewart Irene Eloise Stewart was born on Sept. 4, 1930, in Forestburg, AB, and passed away in the Killam Long Term Care Centre on Sept. 15, 2023. She was predeceased by her husband Gordon; her parents Gerald and Anna Oberg; brothers Wilmer, Everett, Irwin (Perk), and a sister Doreen. She is survived by two sisters Alaire (Detert) and Jean (Grainger), a son Jack (Penny), and a daughter Marilyn Melnyk (Bob) as well as two granddaughters, Sara Langton (Jesse), Jamie Rolf (Andrew) and three great-grandchildren: Ben and Julia Rolf and Maisie Langton, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. I have heard it said that neither the date of your birth or the date of your death, are important… it is that line that connects the two that makes all the difference. If that is the case… Irene’s line was both long and full. She grew up at a time when horsepower was

used both for field work, and transportation. She rode six miles each way to school in a homemade van drawn by a team of horses. You carried in wood and coal to keep your house warm in the winter and hauled the ashes out. Running water meant that you ran out to the pump to get another pail. You learned to be selfsufficient simply because there was no other choice. And yet through it all… she often remarked that she wouldn’t change a thing. She was nine years old before the second world war even began. Growing up she was the best Mom anyone could hope for. She knew when to offer encouragement with a pat on the back and when to aim a little lower if the occasion warranted. As adults she simply became a friend, a very good friend who will be sorely missed. And oh yes… that line between her birth date and the time of her passing… we should all do so well. A life well lived. A graveside service celebrating Irene’s life will be held on Saturday, Sept. 23, at 2 p.m. at the Galahad Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Killam Long Term Care or a charity of the donor’s choice. The family would like to thank Dr. Hanton, Dr. Rami, and the entire staff of the Killam Long

Term Care Centre for the outstanding care Mom received over the past four years. It is much appreciated. Arrangements in care of Fee & Sons Funeral Home and Crematorium Killam. Providing quality, honest and dignified service since 1913.

Co-op celebrates 75 years in Sedgewick with new faces at the helm Leslie Cholowsky Editor

This year marks the 75th anniversary of the start of a new Co-op in Sedgewick, a milestone that Wild Rose Co-op Association wants to acknowledge and celebrate. This year’s annual report from Wild Rose Co-op included a copy of the Memorandum of Association of the Sedgewick Co-operative Association, bearing the names of 10 residents who played key roles in starting the organization. These were Arthur B. Falls, George I. Acheson, Ludvik Arntzen, George Jackson, Roy M. Storbakken, Laust Petersen, Wm. C. Simons, Robert C. Innes, G. K. Erikssen, and Nels Djos, who formed the first board. The Memorandum was filed Feb. 12, 1948, and May 1 marked the official anniversary of the Sedgewick Co-operative Association. Capital for the new association was provided by shares, sold at $25 each, and the doors of the new Coop store opened in September the following year. The Sedgewick Co-op Association marked a loss their first year of business, and then turned a profit for the next 32 years and going forward (according to the Sedgewick History Book, The Sedgewick Sentinel, published in 1982). The Wild Rose Co-op was incorporated Nov. 1, 2007, when Sedgewick Co-operative Associa-

tion merged with the Camrose Coop Association. Camrose already included the Killam Co-op Store at the time, that change took place in 1988. Killam Co-op was one of the founding Co-operatives of the Alberta Co-operative Wholesale the precursor to Federated Co-operatives Ltd. and one of the first co-operatives formed in Alberta in the early 1900s. In 2002, the Killam Bulk Fuel business was opened by Wild Rose Coop. In 2006 a new food store was built in Sedgewick, before the merger. In 2009 a new cardlock was built and opened on Highway 13 near Hardisty. In 2012, a new cardlock was built and opened in Camrose. The Wild Rose Co-op Association has expanded over the past five years, opening a new Agro Centre in Sedgewick, Tofield, and Camrose, a new cardlock in Viking and Tofield, a new liquor store in Killam, and this year, a new fertilizer plant at Sedgewick Agro. This fall Wild Rose Co-op promoted Stephen Elley as Branch Manager of both the Sedgewick Home and Farm Centre and Sedgewick Food Store, with Wendy Reister promoted to Assistant Store Manager at the food store, with Ian Hagel the Assistant Store Manager of the Sedgewick Home and Farm Centre.

Flagstaff students to get opportunity for hands-on learning at health care skills day Leslie Cholowsky Editor Students in the Flagstaff Region will have a unique opportunity this coming Wednesday, Sept. 20, when health professionals from Flagstaff County are holding a “Let’s Go Rural! High School Skills Day” organized by the Rural health Professionals Action Plan (RhPAP) in collaboration with the Flagstaff Healthcare Attraction and Retention Committee. The event aims to introduce students to the world of rural healthcare while showcasing the array of local opportunities available. Students from Daysland, Forestburg, and Sedgewick High Schools will engage in hands-on learning opportunities, guided by experienced rural health professionals. The event will take place at the Killam Community Hall, and students will have an opportunity to interact with professionals while exploring health-related careers in their communities. They will also learn

about healthcare provider job experiences, and discover what educational requirements and opportunities there are for specific healthcare careers. Some of the skills covered will be IV starts, suturing, airway management, spinal immobilization. Participating partners include AHS, Covenant Health, and Flagstaff County EMS personnel. It promised to be a very educational and fun day for the participants. The Let's Go Rural! initiative designed by RhPAP aims to combat attraction and retention in rural issues by offering students in rural Alberta the chance to explore

health care careers as they make decisions about what post-secondary schooling or other opportunities they will pursue after high school, with the hope that they will choose rural practice in the future.

Youth Hunting Initiative Day to be held this Saturday The fourth Saturday of every September is a special day for Alberta youth, providing them with an opportunity to experience game bird hunting, including how to hunt properly and responsible hunting practices from experienced hunters. Eligible youth can hunt upland game birds without a provincial game bird licence on Saturday, Sept. 23, only. Hunters must be between the ages of 10 and 17, inclusive, and must have passed the Alberta Conservation and Hunter Education Course (available online through Alberta Hunter Education Instructors’ Association aheia.com). Youth hunters taking part in the initiative day must still be accompanied by a parent, legal guardian, or adult aged 18 or older with written permission from a parent or guardian in order for the youth to hunt using a firearm. Youth can only hunt upland game birds where there is, or will be, an open season in that WMU, with regular bag limits applying. There are some exceptions; Camp Wainwright is not open to hunting on this day, and Merriam’s Turkey may not be hunted anywhere in the province on this day. Youth who already hold a provincial Game Bird licence can hunt additional species of birds open to all youth hunting on that day only. Licenced adult hunters accompanying eligible youth may hunt as well, but are limited to upland game birds for which the regular season is already open. The 2023 Alberta Hunting Regulations guide is available online, indicating what birds are eligible upland game birds, and noting what species are protected in Alberta. That list includes Whooping Cranes and Sage Grouse, and in some WMUs, sharp-tailed grouse. The guide also contains information on bag limits for different types of upland birds. In 2022 Alberta had over 160,000 resident hunters, with 47 per cent of those purchasing game bird licences. Youth made up only seven percent of the total hunters in 2022. Flagstaff County harvest in full swing throughout the region

It is that time of year when we start to see more machinery going down the road and I ask all of you to share the roadway accordingly. I can personally testify that nothing means more to an equipment operator going down the road than to see oncoming traffic pull over to the side or tailing with adequate space. The blind spots in big machinery are much larger than ones of a normalsized vehicle, so placing yourself in a position where the operators can see you may just save a life. Another approach is that if you see oncoming equipment, plan an alternative route if feasible. I can assure you that you will not be disappointed with the breathtaking views of Flagstaff County in the fall. Harvest in Flagstaff is a time where the community comes together, whether that’s neighbours helping neighbours or friends in town helping friends in the field. Long hours, tireless

teamwork and dedication are what feeds this world, and being a farming community, we are the backbone. At the start of this year's season, we were on the verge of declaring an Agricultural Disaster due to drought conditions. With improved conditions, that only left us facing variables like hail damage and pressures from pests. Producers have faced adversity repeatedly, and each time, they have emerged stronger, more resilient, and more determined to not only feed our community but the world. This year has certainly been unique with many variations of maturity and crop quality all within our borders. We have the good, the bad, and the ugly, which is a direct result of minimal blanket coverage rainfall. With harvest going into full swing, I have not heard of many yields; however, I suspect some producers will be surprised with some of their crops,

particularly oilseeds. The canola plant has always amazed me with its ability to perform in low plant densities and bounce back from natural stresses. These yields may not be “bin busting” but in times like we have witnessed this year, we can be grateful to have a harvest, as many of us were expecting to be in the field much earlier. According to the Alberta Crop Report released on September 5th, 35 per cent of all crops have been combined provincially. The majority of that being in the south where they have experienced drier and warmer weather. Challenges we are facing now are cool, moist and smoky conditions that are delaying maturity even further. Our region has only completed 9 per

cent of the harvest, which is behind the five-year average of 14 per cent. Surface soil moisture conditions (sub-surface in brackets) are currently rated at 7 (19) per cent poor, 21 (29) per cent fair, 60 (44) per cent good, 11 (8) per cent excellent and 1 (0) per cent excessive. The Second cut hay is 62 per cent complete and average yield is at one ton per acre, above the five-year average 0.8 tons per acre. The majority of pasture growth conditions are rated as fair. If you would like to read more information or previous Alberta Crop Reports, please visit www.alberta.ca/alberta-crop-reports. From my behalf I would like to wish you all a safe and successful harvest and to enjoy them meals in the field!
