Many show displeasure of ruling, others finger protesters BY JANA SEMENIUK Parents upset with the most recent school mask mandate ramped up their efforts to have the decision overturned this past week with protests held on Aug. 26 in front of the Elk Island Public School’s main building in Sherwood Park; and another held on Aug. 30 on Broadmoor Blvd. While nearly a hundred protestors showed up outside of the EIPS main building on Aug. 26, more than two hundred protested on Broadmoor Blvd. Aug. 30 to voice their concerns over the masking of children for the coming school year. EIPS educates approximately 17,000 children each year in 43 different schools. Parents, grandparents and children held signs, rang cow bells and cheered while passing motorists honked to show their support. The protests have not only attracted support from the public, they have also attracted support from a popular Facebook crusader Josh SwitzerCrowe, also known as The Angry
Albertan. Switzer-Crowe, whose Facebook page has amassed over 46,000 followers, attended the Aug. 26 protest as well as the Aug. 30 one, doing live videos which so far have garnered over 16,000 views. He said he began speaking out against lockdowns in 2020. “I was already protesting and some-
one tried to censor me. That’s when I started The Angry Albertan,” he said. “It’s the fear they've induced into people, especially over something where the evidence doesn't seem to support the level of fear that we're seeing. That propelled me into this.” Protest organizer, Deanna McTonery, said the group is pushing for optional

masking. “We're not against masks. It's not about any of that. We just want a choice. We're against the mandatory masking of our children,” she said. The Facebook group, EIPS Parents and Community Against Mask Mandates for Students, has swollen to nearly 800 members since its inception Aug. 18, the day masking mandates were announced for students attending EIPS. Meanwhile, although many showed support to the large group of protestors, not everyone was happy to see them. Some motorists pulled up their own masks and gave the crowd a middle finger while a complaint to local police sent two officers into the crowd ensuring public safety. “Someone called to complain that people were running into traffic,” said one of the protestors. The two police officers spoke briefly to McTonery, before leaving the group to continue their protest which lasted more than two hours.
