Light at the end of the tunnel after busy summer of construction Kerry Anderson Publisher Road and highway construction in and around Tofield this spring and summer has been exciting, but also inconvenient at times.

“It’s great to see the work being done, but it isn’t ideal having all these projects on the go at the same time,” said Town of Tofield Assistant CAO Jeff Edwards.

Alberta Transportation has been busy with the Tofield Bypass project, which is now nearing completion. This undertaking has been decades in the works, from public complaints and petitions to planning a bypass which finally started last year re-routing traffic around town instead of through the middle and past CW Sears School.

The bypass construction reportedly worth $20 million wraps the southern portion of 834 around town, and then reconnects five km north of Tofield. As well, a section of Highway 14 running east/west just south of Tofield has been realigned to provide a longer and safer distance for traffic to stop at the railway crossing beside the intersection with 834.

Alberta Transportation has also been working on the west portion of the service road near Highway 14, adding a truck lane for parking of large vehicles wanting to stop in at the several stores in the area.

The Town of Tofield is doing the same to the eastern portion of the service road from the Tempo to the auction mart, rehabilitating the road and giving it an asphalt overlay. It too will be built-out for large vehicle

parking, which should be a bonus for the auction mart in particular.

“It’s actually been in the works almost two years.

This has ties to COVID, and not being able to move forward last year. This year has been held up by the availability of contractors, and product availability,” Edwards said.

“The preliminary work is presently being done, but it’s been at a bit of a standstill awaiting product.”

Another pleasant change has been the building of a paved walking path from the public truck parking area, across the railway tracks on 51 Street, and then winding west and ending between Park Stone Plaza and behind Tim Hortons.

“The walking path we had hoped for last summer, as well,” said Edwards. He went on to say the Town had secured grant money for the path and also had to

negotiate an agreement with CN to cross the tracks.

“The grant was very specific, as we proved an economic development component and safety component as benefits of the walking path.”

Edwards said being able to get to the businesses on foot from in-town residences would help business and quality of life for the public, but having the walking path makes foot traffic much safer.

“People were walking along the shoulder of the road, and obviously that isn’t ideal from a safety perspective.”

The new walking path will be maintained by the Town both summer and winter, when all the projects should be completed.

“We have to thank the residents for the patience they have shown throughout these projects,” Edwards said.

The Town of Tofield was able to get a grant to pay for the new walking path which starts at the truck park and goes over the tracks all the way to Park Stone Plaza.

Tofield Ag Society asks county twice for funds for Arena renovations Group must wait for next year’s budget Patricia Harcourt Staff Reporter

Tofield Agricultural Society has come before Beaver County Council twice this year to ask for funding to help undertake needed but expensive renovations for the Tofield Arena.

“The Tofield Ag Society is respectfully requesting up to a maximum of $500,000 funding from Beaver County, but may only require $100,000,” stated the presenters at the Sept. 1 meeting of Beaver County council.

But like the first request, council heard the presentation but made no commitment at the time. Instead, the county had more questions regarding the statistics for use of the facility, the population base (town versus county) using it, and what fundraising has been done to raise funds on their own.

The society replied by stating that a completely sold out raffle could raise $100,000 net profit. The Tofield Sodbuster Rodeo was also cited as “very

successful and well received,” this year and is a principle fundraiser for the Ag Society.

Deputy Reeve Gene Hrabec (Division 3) asked: “Why not just raise $200,000 with this scenario?” The reply was that the society was reluctant to make predictions about how much they could raise.

Reeve Jim Kallal (Division 2) offered a letter of support, stating that CN Rail has community and project funding.

Division 1 Councillor Kevin Smook thought administration should get together an RFD on the request as “the next logical step.”

But there would be no more discussion in the public portion of the meeting, as Kallal said he preferred council go into closed session to talk about it further.

When the ag society delegation wanted to know if there was any time line in which to expect a decision there did not appear to be any given before the delegation left the virtual meeting.

Attending for the ag society were Dave Berrecloth, Lionel Williams and Daryl Lindberg,

who gave an overview of the Tofield Arena Improvement Project for the second time.

The society needs to replace the Arena floor and the Zamboni room at a cost of $1.2 million and $360,000 respectively.

Council passed a motion to give the society a letter of support for its grant applications for these projects.

However, the Tofield Agricultural Society will be waiting on a decision from the county regarding its funding request, as a motion was passed that “the amount of the county’s financial support be referred to the 2022 budget process.”

This means that the next council in place following the municipal elections on October 18 will be making the decision on whether to give funds for the renovations and, if so, by how much.

The Tofield Arena is owned and operated by the Tofield Agricultural Society since it was built in 1972. An addition was put on in 2009.

In its goal statement, the society says the Arena “was built to promote and encourage ac-

tivities so designed to enrich lifestyles for the communities of Tofield and Beaver County.”

The ice surface is used 60 hours per week during the winter months, consisting of people in Tofield, Beaver County and surrounding area, stated the presentation.

Tofield Minor Hockey has 60 per cent of that use, with adult hockey at 18 per cent, figure skating at 11 per cent, as well as drop-in programs like public skating and shinny at 11 per cent.

But the facility is also used year-round for events such as the annual bull bash, rodeo, 4H Beef Show and Horse Club.

There are also ball tournaments, graduation ceremonies, dance performances and summer programs that have been held there over the years In May of this year the society gave the county a presentation on the arena flooring and header/return system project.

The county wanted more specifics on the costs, and the presenters came back this month to say they had firmer budget numbers for the floor.

But it was also discovered that the Zamboni room needed replacing as there were several serious safety concerns.

Several grants have been applied for but, if these are not successful, then the ag society is asking for $500,000 each from the county and the Town of Tofield. The ag society itself would contribute $200,000.

The current Zamboni was built for a pull type tractor not the Zamboni now being used, and there is no way to modify the room.

“This safety concern and several others were exposed by a structural engineering report, including exposed gas lines where the Zamboni is inches away from hitting which also has the potential for catastrophic results in harming an employee or member of the public,” said the presentation.

This room needs to be moved from its current location in the southwest side of the building to the east side at a cost of $360,000. The arena floor project will cost $1.2 million for an overall cost of the renovations set at $1.560 million.

Council Corner Tofield Arena in need of repairs, community support required Recently, the Tofield Agricultural Society, in conjunction with the Town of Tofield, underwent two separate, independent investigations on the arena concrete pad and brine lines. These two components, and their integrity are essential to the viability and operation of the facility.

Through investigation, it has been determined that not only is the concrete pad in need of extensive rehabilitation, but the brine cooling lines are also in need of extensive repair and replacement.

Without the two of these in fine standing there is a strong potential for ice making and usage to not be available. However, even after these revelations it is the intent of the Agricultural Society and the Town to continue with ice making for the 2021/2022 season.

Through meetings involving

the Ag Society Executive and the Town, it has been determined that there is no choice other than to action replacement on these items.

The Town has secured a granting specialist to help in coordinating the intricate application(s) and will be looking to have had these applications submitted for review and are awaiting word on the outcome.

Along with this, the Ag Society has approached both Beaver County, as well as Tofield Council to make them aware, and to graciously ask for donation monies to be provided. Both respective Councils have been receptive and have

committed verbally to participating.

It should be noted; the repairs required are extensive, which directly results in an exceptionally high cost. Granting dollars will result in some of the necessary funds, however not all. This has provided members of the Ag Society to become creative in looking at alternatives.

Candidate Damien Kurek Hosts Tailgate Meet and Greet in Tofield On Friday, Sept. 10, Conservative Candidate and incumbent MP for Battle River— Crowfoot, Damien Kurek, hosted a tailgate meet and greet in Tofield.

This was one of the many stops that Kurek has made on the campaign trail.

“There are about 65 municipalities in Battle River—Crowfoot. I’ve tried to get to as many as possible throughout the past two years, but with COVID restrictions, that has been tough,” Kurek said.

“In the midst of it I have worked to connect with thousands of folks from across Battle River-Crowfoot over the last number of weeks and the last two years.”

About 40 people stopped over the course of the two-hour visit.

“It was a great turnout and there were lots of engagement about various things that include sharing frustrations with the Trudeau Liberals and a host of questions on the Conservative Party’s platform.”

Loose Ends: Dead to Me

I’m here to complain about my cell phone.

Well, all cell phones, I think. Mine can’t be the only one that has a battery with so little life in it that it dies at every opportunity.

It seems to need recharging every other day, something I seldom remember to do. I might remember if, say, I had been using the phone a lot, but just languishing in its own pocket in my purse seems to drain the power even faster than constantly texting my sons and grandsons and deleting missed calls from Asia or Kansas.

It seems to me that the battery should only be losing power when the phone is in use. Why does it go from 62 per cent to 0 overnight? Is it too much to ask that

when I’m sleeping my phone do the same? I’m beginning to think we have phone gremlins that spend the night playing games, making long distance calls to their garden gnome cousins and loading so much data that every morning a message comes up telling me to delete unnecessary data because my storage is full.

I didn’t even know what ‘data’ was or how it managed to stuff my phone without my permission. How rude. But now I have learned that

it is cached, residual, and advertisement files. Oh, okay, so it’s like junk mail then. Apparently this unnecessary data, which doesn’t go away when I hit the delete button, gathers together when I’m not using my phone which is much more frequently than when I am using it, to be honest. I don’t feel like I’m dying if I’m not connected 24/7.

All I want is a functional phone, powered up and ready when I need it to do phone things. It doesn’t have to keep me tuned in to world disasters; alert me to the latest problems in the ongoing Jolie-Pitt divorce or what colour has been named the paint of the year. I have access to a digital newspaper for that.

I’ve seen those ads for

fancy recharging stands or one phone snuggling up to another to share its juice.

But unless my cell phone grows legs and uses them to get to the charging station without

my help, technology like that is light years away for me. Meanwhile I need a functional phone that recharges the battery as easily as it drains it. Until that happens, it’s dead to me.

9/11: One day that changed the Western World One-quarter of most people’s lives ago, the most jaw-dropping event in my lifetime happened. That was 20 years ago last Saturday - 9/11/2001.

Below are the events that forever changed the world.

6:45 am - 7:52 am: Hijackers begin boarding UA Flights 174, AA Flight 11, UA Flight 93 and AA Flight 77 in Boston 7:59 a.m.: AA Flight 11 takes off from Boston with 11 crew members, 76 passengers and five hijackers aboard.

8:15 a.m.: UA Flight 175 takes off from Boston with nine crew members, 51 passengers and five hijackers. As this hijacked flight is taking off, AA Flight 11 is being taken over by hijackers using knives and threats of a bomb and violence.

8:19 a.m.: Betty Ann Ong, a flight attendant aboard Flight 11 alerts ground personnel that the cockpit is unreachable, a passenger has been stabbed and the plane is being hijacked. The passenger, identified as Daniel M. Lewin, served four years in the Israeli army and a report speculated he may have tried to stop the hijackers. He's likely the first person killed during the attacks.

8:20 a.m.: AA Flight 77 takes off from Washington Dulles International Airport with six crew members, 53 passengers and five hijackers on board.

8:24 a.m.: Flight 11 hijacker Mohamed Atta accidentally broadcasts a message to air traffic control saying, "We have some planes. Just stay quiet, and you will be okay."

8:26 a.m.: AA Flight 11 makes a hard left turn to the south, heading toward New York City. Ong reports that the plane is "flying erratically."

8:37 a.m.: Boston's air traffic control center alerts the U.S. Air Force's Northeast Air Defense Sector, which mobilizes the Air National Guard to follow Flight 11.

The FAA also asks UA Flight 175 to look for AA Flight 11, unaware that hijackers are aboard the flight.

8:42 a.m.: UA Flight 175 is hijacked

and has its last radio communication with the ground. Hijackers use the same tactics as those on AA Flight 11 to take control of the plane. United 93 takes off from Newark International Airport with seven crew members, 33 passengers and four hijackers on board. It was originally bound for San Francisco.

8:44 a.m.: AA Flight 11 flight attendant Madeline "Amy" Sweeney tells Michael Woodward, a Boston flight service manager at the Boston airport, on the phone that she sees water and buildings outside the plane's window as they're making a rapid descent. She tells him "We are flying way too low. Oh my God, we are way too low," and then the call ends with a burst of loud sustained static.

8:46 a.m.: Flight 11 crashes into floors 93 through 99 of 1 World Trade Center, known as the North Tower, severing all three emergency stairwells. First responders are dispatched to the scene and an evacuation begins.

8:50 a.m.: President George W. Bush is told what's believed to be a small plane hit the World Trade Center. At the time, Bush was visiting an elementary school in Sarasota, Florida, and was told it was likely an accident.

8:51 a.m.: Hijackers begin taking over AA Flight 77 less than a minute after the message is sent to the FAA Indy Center that all is normal. Unlike the first two hijackings, there are no reports of the terrorists using threats of a bomb or Mace or any physical violence.

8:52 a.m.: A flight attendant aboard UA Flight 175 reports to an airline operator that a hijacking is underway.

Peter Hanson, a passenger, calls his father Lee, and tells him to call United Airlines and relay the message that the plane has been hijacked. Lee calls the Easton, Connecticut, police department.

8:55 a.m.: A Port Authority fire safety employee tells people in 2 World Trade Center, the South Tower, that it is secure and there is no need to evacuate. Those in the process of evacuating are told to use the re-entry doors and elevators to

return to their office. FAA New York Center declares UA Flight 175 a hijacking and warns it may be heading "right towards the city."

8:59 a.m.: Port Authority Police Department Sergeant Al DeVona orders both towers to be evacuated, followed a minute later by an evacuation order for the entire complex. Brian David, a former Navy pilot and passenger on UA Flight 175, calls his mother, Louise, and tells her passengers are thinking about storming the cockpit to retake control of the plane.

9:00 a.m.: President Bush arrives at Room 301 at the elementary school for a demonstration of the school's early reading program.

9:02 a.m.: A Port Authority fire safety employee announces people may start an orderly evacuation of the South Tower if "conditions warrant on your floor."

9:03 a.m.: UA Flight 175 crashes into floors 77 through 85 of the South Tower.

Two of the three emergency stairwells are rendered impassible.

9:05 a.m.: White House chief of staff Andrew Card informs President Bush that the South Tower was hit and this was not an accident. "A second plane hit the second tower. America is under attack," were the words he said to the president.

9:12 a.m.: Renee A. May, a flight attendant aboard AA Flight 77, calls her mother and says the plane has been hijacked. Her mother then calls American Airlines. Minutes after their call, passenger Barbara Olson calls her husband, Solicitor General Theodore Olson, and tells him hijackers took over the flight.

He informs federal officials.

9:14 a.m.: Bush leaves the classroom and returns to a holding area in the school. A minute later he's briefed and watches the television coverage of the World Trade Center.

9:19 a.m.: United Airlines dispatcher Ed Ballinger begins warning UA Flight 93 and the other 15 flights he's handling to "beware any cockpit intrusion" be-

cause two planes hit the World Trade Center.

9:20 a.m.: FAA Indy Center contacts Chicago Air Route Traffic Control Center and advises them that AA Flight 77 may have been hijacked. Initially, FAA Indy Center assumed the flight had crashed.

9:23 a.m.: UA Flight 93 receives Ballinger's warning about potential hijackings.

9:28 a.m.: UA Flight 93 is hijacked.

During two radio transmissions during the hijacking, the FAA Cleveland Center hears a captain or first officer yelling "Mayday!" and a physical struggle.

9:30 a.m.: Bush makes his first statement on the attack on the World Trade Center. He calls it a "difficult moment" for America and classifies it as an "apparent terrorist attack."

9:35 a.m.: A UA Flight 93 flight attendant is heard over the radio saying, "I don't want to die. I don't want to die. I don't want to die."

9:37 a.m.: AA Flight 77 crashes into the Pentagon.

9:40 a.m.: Bush is informed that a plane hit a Pentagon, which he recalls thinking amounted to a "declaration of war." At the same time, there are reports that the South Tower's collapse is imminent and additional buildings at the World Trade Center could come down.

9:42 a.m.: The FAA grounds all flights.

9:58 a.m.: UA Flight 93 is flying low enough to the ground that Edward P. Felt, a passenger, is able to reach an emergency operator in Pennsylvania.

9:59 a.m.: The South Tower collapses.

10:03 a.m.: Passengers and crew members storm the cockpit of UA Flight 93. It crashes in Shanksville, Pennsylvania, about 20 minutes flying time from Washington, D.C. 10:28 a.m.: The North Tower collapses.

12:16 p.m.: U.S. airspace closes.

8:30 p.m.: President Bush addresses the nation from the White House.

Letter to the Editor Since the beginning of this campaign, it has been shown to me over and over that Albertans and Western Canadians are absolutely finished with government across all levels in this country, and I don’t blame you one bit.

The message that I pray to have come across to you all is that of “hope” and for you all to know that I hear you and I am with you. So many citizens of Battle River Crowfoot are feeling a sharp and rapid pull-away of our fundamental rights and freedoms as Canadian citizens, and my friends, I feel that too. I have addressed this in every interaction I have had in the last while that I absolutely will fight for every word in the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

In the 2019 election, I stepped into the background of politics to help a Conservative candidate get elected. I assisted in his campaign with the exact mindset that only a Conservative government could go to Ottawa and “save” us in the West. In a very short time I realized that thought was merely a dream.

The fact of the matter is this: any and all coast-to-coast-tocoast parties in Canada prop up a broken system that isn’t only unfair for the West, but is stacked against the West.

For far too long Central and Eastern Canada have been loading up their governmental toolbox to keep Alberta and Western Canadian voices at bay. They have deliberately stifled us in an effort to exploit us for the riches and wealth we are blessed to have. Simply put, “just be quite and send us your money”.

Well, I have had enough!

As a rural Albertan farm kid, family man, the previous owner of a land Reclamation Company and now a Real-Estate Agent, I have seen first hand the constant and steady decline in Alberta causing the steady increase of hardships that my fellow Albertans

have had to endure. All while the Eastern provinces build and build. I knew that I could no longer sit back and watch.

We continue to send billions of dollars per year, to the tune of $50 BILLION dollars, to help prop up the Central Canadian economies, with little to nothing coming back.

So, when I learned about the Maverick Party, who was behind it and what their goals were, I knew in my heart that this was exactly the party I needed to be a part of.

The Maverick Party stands for one thing and one thing only: “BEST for the WEST”.

Mavericks are not just running against the big country wide parties like the CPC, Liberals, NDP etcetera, we are running against a broken system that does not work for Alberta nor for the West. In fact, I would even venture to say that this current Federal system has been strategically stacked against us in the West, and it is time to change it!

Canada as we know it has shown us here in Alberta and here in the West that we really don’t matter to them. We are their pay cheque and that is about it. Our projects (specifically pipelines) and way of life are continually met with interference by our very own country, and it intentionally harms our economy and our people. What kind of trusting, all encompassing, “unified” relationship is that?

Is it just the Justin Trudeau Liberals harming us? Unfortunately, no it is not. We have also been left behind by Erin O’Toole’s Conservative Party of Canada. All you have to do is turn on the evening news or punch in a quick Google search to find that every time Erin O’Toole steps up to a microphone he is point blank pandering to Quebec and Ontario and taking our “safe” Western votes for granted. In this short campaign time alone, the Conservatives have dropped or waivered on any platform efforts that could

have provided benefit to us in Alberta and in the West; all to gain support and votes in Central and Eastern Canada.

Members of Parliament belonging to these big Countrywide parties cannot properly stand up for the West and for the changes necessary. They must remain silent and “tow the party line” to remain in the Party. Where are the demands to end the Equalization, or the calls to end carbon tax? Where are the demands to put in an Energy East pipeline, or any pipeline back on the table to make up the 81 BILLION barrels of Saudi Oil imported into Canada over the last 5 years that have 100% taken our Western Jobs? Where are the demand calls to help our job loses like there are for Eastern jobs?

Aren’t these the big talking points that won Erin O’Toole the CPC Leadership race? Or did he win that in Quebec and Ontario too?

This election boils down to this: It is time for Western Canada to stand up and make the rest of Canada listen. Our Maverick Party candidates are true grassroots Western Canadians that have nothing but respect and admiration for the entire history, traditions and values that make the West worth so much more

money. This is our home and our future. Not only us but for our children and grandchildren and many generations to come. We are right now faced with the time we must rise together and defend. If not now, when? Will we have another opportunity?

The time is now for fairness within this confederation and the Maverick Party has an iron clad plan to force the powers that be in Ottawa to listen. Our “Twin-Track Approach” to this change lays out five much needed constitutional changes for fairness in the West (Track A). Or alternatively (Track B), The Maverick Party will be moving forward on a Western Independent Nation. How? Both Track A & B will be concurrently worked so if the time comes to take each province and territory to their own citizen referendums, all will be ready for that to happen.

My last and final message is directly to our senior citizen and honoured Veterans. I speak to you all together because I know, without a shadow of doubt, that it is you that fought for all the freedoms being taken for granted today and built this country from nothing to

everything. The level of admiration and respect that you deserve I think in a very large way is being lost. I hope that you will allow me to not only represent you but allow me to now fight for you. I hope that you allow me to fight for the foundation you built for us so that we can continue your legacy and pass it along for generations to come.

As I sign off, I want to thank all of Battle River Crowfoot for the amazing support, openness and encouragement you have given me over the last several weeks. I hope you see in me the skills, drive and passion that drew me into this battle in the first place. I am asking for you support one more time. On September 20, 2021, I am asking that you place that X beside my name, Jeff GOLKA and have the courage and the hope to stand now for the future of Alberta and the future of Western Canada.

I believe in my heart that our freedom of choice and freedom to prosper is at stake and we must decentralize from Ottawa before it is too late.

In a notice sent out by Rural Community Consultant Colleen Lindholm, “Keeping our local

health-care heroes, community members, and partners healthy and safe is our utmost priority, so this difficult decision was made with the hope that we hold a bigger and better celebration when it is safe to do so. Keep your eyes open for the new dates.

“Thank you for your ongoing support,” she added, “and please be sure to let your local health-care

providers know how much you appreciate them as they continue to work tirelessly during these challenging times.”

The event sponsored by the Tofield, Ryley and Beaver County Community Attraction and Retention Committee invited all community members and health-care providers to form teams of 4-6, and to race around Tofield, Ryley and

Beaver County within two hours collecting clues and completing challenges.

Post race, competitors were invited to the Tofield/Ryley/Beaver County Rhapsody Community Award Celebration.

The re-scheduled event will likely be announced once COVID rates in Alberta get back to a more manageable number.

Louida Mae Reil (Stauffer) April 4, 1928 - Aug. 26, 2021 Louida Mae Reil (Stauffer), daughter of William and Katie Stauffer was born April 4, 1928; she passed away on August 26, 2021 at the age of 93 as the result of Covid19.

Louida was raised on the family farm one mile west of Salem Mennonite Church. Her teen years to a large degree were spent looking after her mother who was ill most of the time.

Louida married Dennis Reil on June 30, 1948.

They resided on Grandpa Stutzman's farm where they were blessed with Derrill, Kathy and Greg.

They later moved to Tofield where Ken joined the family. After moving to Tofield she worked as a waitress at Charlie's Place and as a cashier at a local grocery store. She later became a business woman after purchasing "The Elizabeth Shoppe", a local clothing and shoe store. After selling their acreage and business in 1981 they moved to Newbrook, Alberta where they operated a hog farm for a number of years.

Dennis and Louida moved back to Tofield where they took up residence at the Tofield Lodge. Louida resided there until her final move to Tofield long term care.

She is survived by Derrill (Theresa), Kathleen, Greg (Ellen) and Ken (Kelly); nine grandchildren Curtis (Tammy), Jordan, Tarina, Michael, Christopher, Jean-Paul, William, Kellan, and Austin; six great-grandchildren Paige, Aiden, Kennedy, Cameron, Joshua and Madison. She is also survived by two brothers Merlin (Betty) Stauffer, Harley (Gloria) Stauffer; two brothers-in-law Joseph Voegtlin and Glen Reil and three sisters-in-law Dorothy Juhns, Vivian Eyster and Diane Reil.

Louida was predeceased by her husband Dennis; three sisters Grace Buschart, Pearl Yoder and Florence Voegtlin; and one great-granddaughter Hannah Cardinal.

Due to Covid19 concerns a private family graveside service was held at the Salem Mennonite Cemetery with Pastor Mark Loewen. Memorial donations may be made to the Mennonite Central Committee or to the Alzheimer's Society.

Two new teachers welcomed to CW Sears School New CW Sears School Principal Adam Madsen has announced two new teachers to join the staff in Tofield this school year.

Miss Kozicki is returning to the school after a year teaching Kindergarten in Ryley. She taught Grade 1 at CW Sears in 2019/2020 and will teach Grade 2 this year.

“I am very happy to be back at CW Sears this year and look forward to seeing some familiar faces around,” she said.

Teacher Sharmarann Myers has

been with the BRSD for 15 years but this is the first at CW Sears. Mrs. Myers lives on an acreage near Hay Lakes with her husband and three young boys.

Mrs. Myers says she is excited to be at CW Sears this school year. She loves gardening and has a lot of animals she takes care of at home.

“When I am not outside, my favourite things to do are go swimming with my family or read a good book with a hot cup of coffee,” she said.

“I look forward to getting to know the CW Sears students and families throughout the year.”

Obituary Samuel (Sam) Alexander Hulkovich II Beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle, teacher and friend, Sam passed away on Thursday, September 2, 2021 at the age of 78.

Samuel (Sam) Alexander Hulkovich II was born in Nordegg, Alberta in 1943.

Sam spent his childhood in Nordegg and then rural Stettler as the family relocated.

Sam received his Bachelor of Education at the University of Alberta in Edmonton and began his long career as an educator.

Teaching at several locations across Alberta including Alderflats, Boyle, Bonnyville, Byemoor, Cold Lake, and Frog Lake, Sam spent the majority of his teaching years at Tofield School. Sam shared his love of sport with the many school teams that he devoted his time to coaching, as well as the camaraderie playing with the Tofield Old Timers hockey team. He had many fond memories & stories and when he wasn't reminiscing you could hear the melodious tunes coming from his saxophone. Several colleagues became lifelong friends, some he saw more often than others but the appreciation was the same. As most can attest to, Sam had a quirky sense of humour and was quick to read someone else's sense of humour which usually lead to striking up conversations with friends he hadn't met yet.

Sam had a great love of the outdoors and enjoyed annual camping trips with his family to Radium Hot Springs and Fairmont Hot Springs. He also shared his passion for the outdoors with his Outdoor Education classes by taking them on campouts. He encouraged his woodworking classes to become entrepreneurs as they created 'kingly' chairs from pieces of lumber, the students used skill saws and propane torches. Sam had a unique way of teaching, and believed instilling creativity and thinking ‘outside the box' was imperative.

Sam was not one to sit still long and even kept busy during his summer breaks from school operating dozer & dump trucks, etc. These activities would transition into hobbies and then into another career after retiring from teaching. Sam and Margaret made their home of 32 years in rural Penhold, which is where Sam peacefully passed in his sleep.

Sam will be greatly missed by his wife of 32 years Margaret; his daughters Naola (Roger) Patrie of Sherwood Park and Marcia Airth of Red Deer; his step-children Greg Goulet of Hinton, Darren Goulet of Peachland, BC, and Deanne (Troy) McCallum of Barrie, ON; his grandchildren Marcel (Dee) Patrie, Tammy Nicholson, Ryan (Brandy) Patrie, Matthew Patrie, and Hannah Patrie; six step-grandchildren; great grandchildren Katayla, Darian, Jackson, Jeremy, Mason, Hayle, Evan, and Chloe; nine step-great grandchildren; his great-great grandson Theodore; his siblings Anne (Harve) Brockway of Carstairs, Tim (Brenda) Hulkovich of Red Deer, Shirley (Sam) Church of Red Deer; sister-in-laws Bernice Hulkovich of Calmar, Donna Hulkovich of Stettler, and Elaine (Gordon) Long of Penticton, BC; brother-in-law Walt Zuiches of Gresham, OR; many nieces & nephews; and other family & friends.

Sam was preceded in death by his father Samuel Sr. in September 1975 and his mother Helen in March 1995 (Duda) Hulkovich; his father-in-law Cliff Elder in 2002 and mother-in-law Terry Elder in 2016; his sister Vera Zuiches in 2021; his brothers John Hulkovich in 2000, William Sr. (Bill) Hulkovich in 1996 and James (Jim) Hulkovich in 2018; his sister-in-law Carol (Untch) Hulkovich in 2019; his former wife Faye Jamieson (mother of his children Naola and Marcia) in 2007.

It's faith that lifts us up, love that brings us comfort and strength that allows us to move on.

If friends so desire, in lieu of flowers, tributes may be made to STARS air ambulance, or you may also perform an unexpected and unsolicited act of kindness for some poor soul in Sam's name.

Division 4 asks to be part of mowing program Patricia Harcourt Councillor Barry Bruce backtracked on a request that Division 4 not be part of the fall mowing program after being granted this at the August 4 meeting.

At that meeting, a motion was passed that the division would receive three inch crushed gravel instead of mowing. Grader operators in Division 4 were to apply the gravel at their discretion wherever there were black boils on roads in the division.

But Bruce asked for a reversal of this decision at the following Sept. 1 meeting, saying he had since spoken with residents who wanted to be part of the county-wide program.

“I would like to rescind the motion and be on board with the rest of the county on the mowing program,” he said.

Interim CAO Margaret Jones told council that a motion to expand the mowing program to include Division 4 was all that was required.

“Glad to see it,” said Division 1 Councillor Kevin Smook, who wanted to know what hap-

pens to the “trade-off” in terms of Division 4 getting gravel instead of mowing.

“Was there any more done in Division 4 with gravel?” he asked. In response, Director of Transportation Dan Blackie indicated the gravel applied was “no more than usual.”

Division 3 Councillor and Deputy Reeve Gene Hrabec said he was “glad it is going,” indicating he had received calls from neighbouring residents unhappy with the arrangement.

Bruce stated he was in favour of the mowing program but “just not at this time,” feeling mowing in the fall was counter productive. But the mowing that was being done in the fall was for main corridor routes and bus routes that would benefit in the winter from less obstruction, said Blackie.

“I think we learned a lesson here,” said Hrabec, and “solved a bunch of problems here,” noting there issue of leaving grass on the road after mowing has been solved with the new equipment being used.

“The mower throws it off into the ditch,” he said, calling it “a significant change, a dramatic

change and a better job.”

Blackie called the decision by council to purchase this grader mounted mower “a perfect opportunity…I already knew what this machine would do,” he said, noting that the grader operators “are taking pride (in their work). When they have the right tools you get a better job,” as the mower “blasts the grass down into the ditch bottom.”

“The guys have done a good job,” said Hrabec, who bemoaned the fact that the other mower “just doesn’t do it” and shoots the cut grass out the side of the machine.

Blackie agreed the new one is “like a Swiss army knife on the grader,” asking: “Is council thinking of purchasing two or three more down the road?”

He thought it would be “too much” to fit out all 12 graders but added he was “still on the fence about how far we go with this.”

Division 5 Councillor Dale Pederson stated that, since the mowing was done in his Division 5, “I’m getting calls” and “a whole bunch of thank yous.”

Special meeting discusses personnel matters in closed session Patricia Harcourt Beaver County held a special meeting of council on Thursday, August 26, but the resulting decision was not disclosed except to say they were legal and personnel issues. Present for parts of the meeting were Acting Chief Administrative Officer Margaret Jones and Brownlee LLP official Janelle Butler.

A motion was made by Councillor Dale Pederson (Division 5) and passed that council go into closed session “to discuss matters under the Alberta FOIP Act.” FOIP stands for Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act. The two subjects to be

discussed in closed session involved “Privileged Information” of a legal nature and the second was for “Disclosure harmful to personal privacy,” of a personnel nature.

Jones left the meeting for an hour and 16 minutes, after which she re-entered the meeting, and then Butler left. The meeting recessed for five minutes.

After reconvening, Deputy Reeve Gene Hrabec (Division 3) made a motion “to move forward with the personnel matter as discussed in Closed Session and that the Reeve provide correspondence to Brownlee LLP as discussed.”

Hrabec requested a recorded vote which passed on a split decision 3-2. Voting in favour

of the motion was Reeve Jim Kallal (Division 2), Hrabec and Pederson; opposed were Councillors Kevin Smook (Division 1) and Barry Bruce (Division 4).

Jones became Acting CAO after the current CAO Bob Beck went on medical leave until the end of September.

Council has been in disagreement for a few months on the issue of the CAO and the need for a corporate review, which is also going to be completed at the end of September.

There is no word on whether this review will be made public as it comes out only a couple of weeks prior to the municipal election on October 18.

Council notes from Sept. 1 meeting Patricia Harcourt Reeve Jim Kallal (Division 2) brought forward a concern at the September 1 meeting of council of a resident living along the service road to the south of the intersection of S.H. 834 and Highway 14.

The resident expressed concern that the design of the road had been changed from what had originally been decided upon.

But Interim CAO Margaret Jones told council that “the original plans are being used from nine years ago,” and she will try to “facilitate a conversation” between the landowner and Alberta Transportation on this point.

Although she “doesn’t know the details,” Jones said that the county “will be responsible” for the 1.5 mile stretch of that road.

Motions After Closed Session With a closed session held in the afternoon, the county passed two motions on what had been discussed behind closed doors.

Council authorized administration to hire the company of Wood

Environment and Infrastructure Solutions to prepare a water management plan for the drainage course through Lindbrook Estates from Plan 792 0020, Block2, Lot 4 MSR to the outfall in NW 8-51-19-W4, subject to the approving authority limits in the Purchasing Policy.

Council also directed administration “to explore the solution for the drainage issue in Lindbrook Estates that was proposed by the landowner of Plan 792 0020, Block 2, Lot 5 in conjunction with preparation of the water management plan.”

After discussing the Lafayette Development Agreement in closed session, council also passed a motion to direct that administration “to prepare a development agreement with the landowner of SE 29-50-20-W4 for the construction of an approach from Twp.Rd. 504 and construction of a private driveway sufficient to accommodate emergency vehicles, with security to be provided at the signing of the development agreement.”

Council receives reports on various activities Patricia Harcourt Beaver County Council received reports on various administrative activities for the September 1 meeting.

In the Legislative and Corporate Services department, “ongoing assessment re-inspection cycle continues for the 2021 assessment year.”

The annual building permit inspections will begin in the middle of September, and assessment inspections will be conducted on site.

Equity Industrial Park lots have been listed with a realtor, and a sign has been installed at the park entrance and at the intersection of Highway 14 and S.H. 854.

Public Works reported that road maintenance and repairs are ongoing, gravelling spot repairs are being done, construction/cement work is now complete and gravel crushing is on hold until the fall. Repairs of some intersections and machinery roads are also being done, shoulder pulls have started in Division 4 and the agriculture department is being helped with the mowing program.

In the Agriculture Department, the county has

received 336 beaver tails for animals culled up to August 25 under the Beaver Control Incentive program.

Under the Landflood program, the department is responding to calls from landowners as they come in, and the contractor is working on problem locations.

Also, there is follow up being done on drainage ditch complaints and inspections. The department is also working with AEP on water issues with Thomas Lake in Division 5. A contract with the consultant has been signed, and public engagement documents are being worked on for the study.

Roadside spraying is being done in Divisions 4 and 5, and as of Aug. 25 roadside mowing has been completed in Division 1 and 2, including additional roads - primary and bus routes.

Grasshopper surveillance is complete, Clubroot surveillance beings in September and Strychnine sales for gopher culls is continuing by appointment only.

Public Safety reported that 181 tickets were issued by bylaw enforcement from January 1 to August 24, for a total of $42,839 in revenue. The

county receives 60 per cent of this funding with the remaining 40 per cent to the province.

The report adds: “It should be noted that due to COVID-19, contact with the public had been slowed but has picked up now.”

During the same time frame, there have been 18 animal control complaints, and nine other files generated.

The officers are working on having a Alternative Penalty Information System (APIS) in place by December of this year, which is mandatory.

“What that means is that any agency that enforces the Traffic Safety Act will be required to have specialized, secure equipment to produce tickets at roadside vehicle stops,” Cst. Rick Ells, chief Community Peace Officer, explains.

“I have started to learn about the new legislation and the requirements. There will be ongoing training with regards to this.” He added: “The Town of Viking Shared Service Agreement started on 1 May and to date is going well.

Ells also reported that the new CPO vehicle has been received and will be set up as a peace officer vehicle.

Tofield area environmental group helps to pass surface drainage bylaw Patricia Harcourt Staff Reporter

GFoundation is taking credit for helping to pass the Surface Drainage Bylaw passed by Beaver County Sept. 1.

The environmental group asserts that “submissions made by GFoundation representatives were crucial to passage of the bylaw,” in a Sept. 8 news release.

An in-person public hearing held by the county Sept. 1 in Ryley received positive input from GFoundation members with other county residents offering differing viewpoints.

What part of the county a landowner resided in appeared to make a difference in viewpoints.

GFoundation members who attended included President Winston Gereluk, Vice-President Judith Basisty and Director Lucien Royer. The hearing was held in the community hall, with council then moving over to its own council chambers at the Beaver Service Centre for the rest of county council’s agenda.

The three foundation environmentalists spoke in favour of the bylaw, which gives the county the ability to investigate manmade changes to surface water drainage, and impose fines. Officials can also go on private lands to investigate what is happening provided adequate notice is given and they work with the landowners in question.

The GFoundation points out that the land on which its headquarters are located lie within wetlands belonging to the Beaver Hills Initiative, a UNESCO world heritage site, part of which lies within the county’s west end moraine area.

“Much of the land to which the Bylaw applies is non-agricultural and falls within the boundaries of the UN-designated Beaver Hills Biosphere, which includes sensitive wetlands

and watersheds,” said Gereluk.

GFoundation is an acronym for Global Foundation for Social Harmony, Sustainability and Development, and the county outlined the following points that were made at the hearing: the foundation supports the bylaw, expressed concern that the bylaw would be complaint driven which could be a barrier to enforcement, wants more positive education to inform residents about the nature of the bylaw, and was also concerned about the deterioration of watersheds and wetlands.

“Surface water drainage is critical to all of them,” said Gereluk, “and for this reason the new bylaw will provide

an important legal tool for education and action with landowners, particularly those who are unaware of the negative effects of development on their properties for surrounding wetlands and all the downstream watershed.”

A written submission by county resident Thom Shaw requested council consider the federal government’s Interim Code of Practice: Beaver Dam Removal in the Surface Drainage Bylaw.

Also included in the county summation was landowner Mr. Johnston who discussed his own property regarding drainage issues and, according to county notes, “cautioned council to contact Alberta Environment regarding the legality of the bylaw as well as

the issue on his property.”

Landowner Dale Collison, former Division 4 county councillor, had trespassing concerns about county officials investigating water drainage on private property and “liability issues if county employees are hurt while on private property.”

Residents P. Hanna and K. Giebelhaus commented on drainage issues on their own properties, with Giebelhaus going back to the 1960s regarding road construction that impacted the drainage patterns on his property.

In the west end of the county, however, the bylaw is being supported by the GFoundation, which is located in the midst of 8,000 acres of

wetlands belonging to the UNESCO designated Biosphere.

“Members of the foundation are committed to work closely with surrounding landowners who live in a common sub watershed of the North Saskatchewan River to help protect sensitive areas susceptible to changes in surface water drainage,” Royer stated at the hearing.

County Council discussed the results of the hearing later in the regular portion of the meeting, and found nothing to prevent them from passing second and third reading to enact the bylaw.

The three GFoundation presenters along with members Judy Lederer and Kathy Owens stated they attended the meet-

ing in council chambers to witness the passage of the bylaw, as it was that important to their world view and a practical measure towards the preservation of wetlands in the biosphere.

Some council members commented that it seemed clear that landowners are confused about the surface water drainage issue and that it is an emotional issue for many.

It was noted that farmers in the middle and eastern portions of the county oscillate between being flooded out in wet years (without the ability to ditch water out of their fields legally), to losing their crops the next year due to lack of rainfall, a situation designed to increase frustration levels for many of them.

Camrose Chamber hosts forum for local federal election candidates Leslie Cholowsky Staff Reporter The Camrose Chamber of Commerce hosted a virtual candidate forum on Wednesday, Sept. 8, live streaming the two-hour event on YouTube.

The forum featured six of the seven Battle River-Crowfoot candidates; Liberal Party of Canada candidate Leah McLeod was not present.

The candidates spoke in a predetermined random order, and were allowed opening and closing statements. Over the evening, audience members could submit questions, and each candidate was given one minute to provide their answers. Microphones were shut off after the alloted time.

Chamber incoming Chairperson Shauna Feth moderated the forum.

Veterans Coalition Party candidate John Irwin was the first to give his opening remarks, “I want to work for you,” he said, referring listeners to the official VCP platform online. He summarized it by saying, “One of our platforms in the VCP is to protect and defend all Canadian rights under the Canadian Constitution; chartered rights and freedoms.

“That is something I fought for as a soldier while I was in the army.”

Irwin noted the party’s plan to make CPP non-taxable, to increase Old Age Security to meet the present cost of living, adjusted for inflation.

“I spent 20 years in the Canadian military; I’ve done my part for king and country, I paid my share of taxes, and unfortunately, we have to pay more.

“When I look at the parliamentary system in this country, it’s a matter of the parliamentarian that has to represent the people, not the people representing the parliamentarian. It doesn’t matter which party it is, and regardless of the past year’s drama, or not, every party has had its in-fighting in regards to who said this, who said what; people are getting kicked out. People getting punted because they don’t walk the imaginary line.

“This is my proposition to you, people of Battle River Crowfoot: let me walk the line for you; let me represent you, let me work for you, that’s the way it should work - representation.”

“I want to work for you. I was a professional soldier, let me be a professional leader to help you along your way. Let me represent your needs and your interests.

“I want to represent you to the best of my ability because your voice matters.”

Incumbent Damien Kurek, candidate for the Conservative Party of Canada spoke next.

Kurek’s opening remarks started off with the statement,

“Two years ago we were in the same position.” He said his observations of the last four weeks of campaigning were, “Our country has never been more divided.

Folks, that needs to change.”

He added, “We need leadership once again in this county that instead of dividing Canadians, unites them.

“Instead of dividing provinces against one another, unites them.

“It is an honour to be your Conservative candidate running for reelection, on a message of hope.”

He said that viewers would hear a lot of different platforms over the night, adding, “But I encourage you to look past some of the division and political rhetoric to ensure you’re able to look forward to a time when our country can be forward looking, be hopeful about the future. To have an economy that once again ensures that people can prosper, whether getting resources to market, predictability for health care funding, or whether it is respect for personal health choices... all of those things come down to the very simple question of leadership.”

Kurek talked about his last two years as the area’s MP, where he noted that the latitude given to represent his riding was very broad.

He closed by saying two main areas of focus have become clear for him going forward. He said these were "Good governance, with good decision making, accountability, and ensuring that people are represented; standing up for what's right, not just the party line, not just what's politically palatable.

"I've done that over the past two years, and if I have the opportunity to serve again, I will continue to do that."

The other main issue, he says, is a rural lens: “We are faced in this country with a growing divide between rural and urban. Camrose and the rest of the 53,000 square km that make up Battle RiverCrowfoot deserve strong representation and folks, I promise to give that to you."

Kurek talked about the Conservative Party’s plan for recovery, saying, "I'm excited about that plan, but it starts with strong representation here at home. As your Conservative candidate I promise to do that as I've done over the past two years, and continue

doing that as long as I have the honour of serving."

NDP candidate Tonya Ratushniak said that the idea of “service, caring about humanity, and our communities” was instilled in her by her family.

She says through those values, she was drawn to find “a better way to represent this riding.”

Ratushniak said, “I’ve watched the Liberals and Conservatives pander to Quebec and Ontario to garner as many seats as possible, while here, in Alberta, a province that has contributed so much to the nation, an economic juggernaut for Canada, is ignored, is voiceless, is ejected, and too often, vilified.”

She added, “As an Albertan, I would like my voice to be just as valuable to a political party as the votes from a person from Ontario or Quebec. Conservatives know that they get these votes by default; Liberals know that it’s too much work.

“I hear all the time that ‘Ottawa doesn’t listen,’ but don’t we keep sending the same party to Ottawa? Maybe it is us who is not listening, not listening to that little voice inside us that would like something to be different.

“Maybe your voice is looking for an opportunity to be brave, and to try something different,” adding “if we want different results, we need to make better choices.”

Ratushniak reviewed some of the key NDP platform issues, including healthcare, affordable housing, and vaccination, creating new jobs while addressing climate change, also touching on support for agriculture and small business.

She ended, “I look forward to serving in any way I am capable.

Like many Canadians, I and my little voice, are ready for better.”

Daniel Brisbane, Green Party candidate, spoke next, opening his remarks quoting a song by Nicki Minaj, called ‘No Frauds,’ quoting, “I don’t need no frauds, I don’t need no fakes, As soon as I wake up, gotta look out for the snakes.

“I think everyone would agree that there are a few frauds in Ottawa right now, and hopefully we don’t send another one, hopefully we can send someone sincere.”

Brisbane said he was inspired to run after hearing a speech of

Kurek’s about mental health and suicide, saying that, “Instead of talking about a universal health care program or putting some money against pharmacare, he instead promoted the idea of looking out struggling friends, ‘taking them for coffee and talking to them.’”

Brisbane described his own struggles with depression openly, talking about the high cost associated with treatment and medicines, adding, “All these money things were in my head.” He said “someone asking me what’s wrong wouldn’t have helped, because I wouldn’t have know what to answer.”

He added, “LGBTQ folks are disproportionally affected by depression.”

Brisbane then raised the issue of conversion therapy, calling it an abusive and bad program, saying that “Almost everybody voted to ban it, it’s widely understood that it’s a bad program. Damien and a few of his Conservative friends voted to keep it, and the Liberals dragged their heels, and it’s still not banned, to this day.

“I’m frustrated, I’m angry, my friends are at risk, I’m at risk. People are really struggling. And instead of people being forced to decide between their anti-depressants and their groceries, because they can’t afford both, why don’t we put some money into mental health?”

He added, “Of course the Green Party’s platform is way bigger than this; it’s available on line. I just wanted to share with you the story of what got me started in politics.”

Jeff Golka, representing the Maverick Party, spoke next.

Golka said, “The Maverick party represents the Alberta way, it’s about freedom for the west; free from the grip of Ottawa in our province.

“Mavericks are not just running against these other parties, we are running to demand changes to a broken system that just isn’t working for the west anymore, and hasn’t worked for generations.

“It’s time to change that.”

Golka talked about equalization, about money going from Alberta to “prop up the central economy, with nothing going back.”

He said, “Alberta projects,

pipelines, and the way of life are continually interfered with by Ottawa, intentionally trying to hurt our people and our economy, I believe.”

Golka said that he feels that Conservative leader Erin O’Toole is acting much the same as Liberal leader Justin Trudeau, “They over promise to eastern Canada and under promise to Alberta.

Where’s Alberta’s 100-day plan? or do we just pay for it?”

Golka talked about vaccine passports, calling them “intrusive and divisive.

“These will further be used to remove your personal rights and freedoms, and your choices in your life. Everything from here forward will continue to be government forced... to allow you to work, shop, go to movies, go to the doctor, or even travel.

“If the government has sole control over your body, your health, what can you do? That’s not freedom. I entirely and unequivocably will reject vaccine passports and mandatory vaccine injections; in other words, it’s your body, it’s your choice.”

Golka wrapped up with, “When freedom is at stake, westerners are the last stand in Canada. I’m proud to be an Albertan.”

The final opening remarks came from People’s Party of Canada candidate Dennis Trepanier.

He said, “Notwithstanding all the parties represented here, the NDP party is essentially a Marxist party; the Liberal Party is globalist; the Green Party is climatealarmist; and the Maverick Party is basically like the Bloc Quebecois representing one province.

The PPC party and the Conservative party are the two parties I want to focus on tonight.”

He referred to the two as David and Goliath, calling Goliath, the Conservative Party, “Big, morally corrupt, and serves a foreign master.

“Big in budgets; Conservatives say they will balance the budget in 10 years, without cuts... this sounds to me like the Liberal’s saying ‘the budget will balance itself.’ Large immigration is supported, mass immigration, putting a burden on pension plans and the health care system.

CW Sears welcomes new principal for school year, fresh from Viking Kerry Anderson Publisher

Veteran teacher and former principal of the Viking School, Adam Madsen, has been transferred to CW Sears and appointed its new principal.

The 41-year-old Madsen has been teaching for 17 years, mostly within the Battle River School Division. His previous seven years were as principal of the Viking School.

In addition to being principal, Madsen will also be teaching Grade 3 Science as well as Math.

The Principal is an NFL football fan of the New England Patriots, and coaches volleyball, track and field, soccer and tee ball. He plays guitar and enjoys

playing in a recreational volleyball league in his spare time.

The Madsen family lives in Tofield. He and wife Lisa, have three children; Chloe (Grade 4), William (Kindergarten), and Ashley (three years old).

“I am looking forward to getting to know the students, families and staff of CW Sears School,” he said, “and being able to resume some of the activities that we have missed during the previous school year.”

With COVID-19 still looming, Principal Madsen said he doesn’t expect the 2021/22 school year to be business as usual, however, he said they will be able to resume activities that students, families and staff are

looking forward to but with some limitations.

“Battle River School Division has provided a plan for the 2021/2022 school year that focuses on balancing restrictions and opportunities to help create safe and welcoming school en-

vironments,” he added.

“Staff at CW Sears School will work to ensure we are meeting the guidelines while also seeking opportunities to resume some of the activities that were not available last year such as field trips, guest speak-

ers and assemblies.

“We certainly can not predict what this school year will bring, but the staff at CW Sears School are ready to rise to the challenges and ensure that learning continues regardless of the circumstances.”

World Suicide Prevention Day commemorated with two local walks Kerry Anderson Publisher

Beaver County paid its respects to World Suicide Prevention with two Walks of Remembrance, Friday at Tofield and Monday at Ryley.

“World Suicide Prevention Day Walks of Remembrance have occurred annually in Tofield since 2019,” said Tracey Boast Radley, Executive Director of Family and Community Support Services (FCSS) Beaver West, “and in Beaver County Since 2017. Prior to that, we hosted pop-up coffee booths and shared resources.

“This year our walks were being held on September 10 outside the Town of Tofield office and September 13 outside the Beaver County office.”

Beaver County Councillor and TBW FCSS Chair Kevin Smook, Tofield RCMP Sergeant Lee Knelsen and Loretta Kroeker all shared words with attendees before the Tofield walk. They were joined by members of the public and representatives of CW Sears School.

“The walks promote physical and mental well-being while remembering loved ones lost to suicide,” said Boast Radley. “In

addition to the walks, partners share relevant resources and service information that is aimed at supporting anyone who may have thoughts of suicide, may have a friend or a family member who has completed suicide, or who may be struggling with their mental well-being.”

Tofield/Beaver County West FCSS hosts these walks with partners including Viking/Beaver FCSS, Beaver County Victim Services, Tofield RCMP, Beaver County Community Adult Learning, Beaver County ARISE, Alberta Health Services, Camrose Family Re-

source Centre, Town of Tofield, Beaver County, Village of Ryley, and Rural Mental Health Animator & Rural Elder Abuse Coordinator Loretta Kroeker.

“These partnerships are im-

portant and we want our community members to know that there are many organizations and people who care and are here to help,” added Boast Radley.

Although foggy, 20 pilots flew in and another 150 spectators enjoyed watching the airplanes while having breakfast. The oldest plane was a 1940 J5 Cub Cruiser owned by Jim Robson of Wetaskiwin. Pilots came from near and far, near being the Kallals who flew across Highway 14 from their own airstrip. Fly in breakfasts, “... lets them know we have an airstrip and gets them familiar with the facility,” said pilot Jerry Kallal.

Tofield RCMP report: officers respond to child welfare complaint Sgt. Lee Knelsen Tofield RCMP

The Tofield RCMP responded to 51 occurrences from Sept. 6 to Sept. 12, 2021, (inclusive.) Also included in these calls for service were 18 traffic complaints/tickets, five suspicious person/vehicle complaints, seven wellbeing checks, six 911 complaints/false alarms, two motor vehicle collisions, and traffic enforcement provided by the K Division Traffic Unit.

On Sept. 6, Tofield RCMP responded to a mischief complaint in Beaver County. RCMP attended and the complainant advised that their vehicle tires were slashed. This file is still under investigation.

On Sept. 6, Tofield RCMP responded to a suspicious person/vehicle complaint in Ryley. The complainant reported that upon confronting the suspects, they fled the scene. RCMP attended and dispatched this information to neighbouring jurisdictions to assist in locating.

This vehicle was later located and stopped by the Camrose RCMP, an investigation began and the occupants were subsequently arrested. On Sept. 7, the fol-

lowing person(s) were charged: 1. Travis Randy STEHR (34) of Camrose County: a. Possession of property obtained by crime; b. Falsify books and documents; c. Identity Theft; d. Possession of a weapon for dangerous purpose; e. Possession of a scheduled substance x 2; f. Possession of break-in instruments; g. Operation of a conveyance while prohibited.

2. Crystal Cecelia SHEWCHUK (41) of Ryley: a) Possession of property obtained by crime; b) Falsify books and documents; c) Identity Theft; d) Possession of a weapon for dangerous purpose; e) Possession of a scheduled substance x 2; f) Possession of break-in instruments; g) Fail to comply with undertaking conditions.

Both Travis Randy STEHR and Crystal Cecelia SHEWCHUK were held for a judicial hearing and were remanded into custody to appear on the above mentioned charges in Camrose Provincial Court on Sept. 8.

Tofield RCMP would again like to warn the pub-

lic about confronting suspicious persons/vehicles.

The RCMP would like to advise the public to immediately dial 911 if it is an emergency or to call 780662-3353 for non-urgent reporting.

On Sept. 6, Tofield RCMP responded to a domestic disturbance in Beaver County. RCMP attended and found that a physical altercation occurred and one person required medical attention. RCMP arrested and held one individual for judicial hearing.

On Sept. 7, Shawn Frederick EMBLIN (48) of Beaver County was charged with the following: 1) Assault causing bodily harm.

Shawn Frederick EMBLIN was released on conditions to appear in Vegreville Provincial Court on Sept. 13.

On Sept. 8, Tofield RCMP responded to a child welfare complaint in Beaver County. The complaint reported to the RCMP, concerns about the welfare of numerous children in the home. This file is still under investigation.

On Sept. 8, Tofield RCMP responded to an elder abuse case in Ryley. RCMP spoke to the complainant who advised that they had

concerns about the welfare of a elderly resident and that they may be taken advantage of by persons responsible for the care of the elder. This file is still under investigation.

On Sept. 9, Tofield RCMP responded to a report of a stolen vehicle reported in Beaver County. RCMP spoke to the complainant who advised that they were able to track their stolen vehicle via GPS capability as it was stolen from Edmonton. Tofield RCMP immediately attended the last known location although were advised that the vehicle was now currently travelling back into Edmonton.

Edmonton City Police were provided the information and were updated accordingly.

On Sept. 9, Tofield RCMP responded to a fraud complaint in Tofield. RCMP attended and spoke to the complainant who advised that they received two calls from a company representing themselves as a loan handler and asked for per-

sonal information. The complainant did not provide any information and contacted their financial institution directly after the call to confirm there was no activity on their bank accounts. The complainant was also advised to report to the Canadian Anti Fraud Center at www. canadianantifraud.ca.

On Sept. 9, Tofield RCMP responded to a theft complaint from a business in

Beaver County. The complainant reported that a known customer attended his business and stole an automobile part while on site. This file is still under investigation.

On Sept. 12, Tofield RCMP responded to a theft complaint in Tofield. RCMP attended and found that suspects stole a fuel jerry can from their yard. This file is still under investigation.

“The state has more rights to raising your children than the parents.”

Trepanier brought up vaccine passports, calling them restrictive, and also party whips, saying, “Your representative will have to represent his leader, Erin O’Toole.

He stated, “The Conservative Party would say yes to Paris Accords, yes to carbon tax, and yes to firearm restrictions.”

Trepanier reviewed his party’s five-point platform next. He said, “Life: for all, and this isn’t PPC, this is personal, I believe this includes the unborn. Liberty; no vaccine passports, no Paris Accords, no more lockdowns. Integrity; a rocksolid, stable, unchanging platform. Prosperity; small government, balanced budget in one term, no more carbon tax, and a change to equalization.

“The last stone is truth. I believe the PPC Party of Canada is the only true conservative party left in the room. All the others have gone left, socialist; we have the best federal platform of all parties.

“Vote your conscience, vote for freedom, vote for your children, vote for hope for the future of Canada.”

Over the next section of the forum, each candidate was given a minute to answer questions from the audience.

The questions dealt with plans to balance the federal budget, without cutting programs, and anticipated changes to corporate taxes; to comment on Canada’s cultural mosaic versus the US melting pot approach to immigration; how candidates intended to balance representation with party, leaders, and their own personal views; climate change and actionable items; supporting innovation across the country’s economy; broadband and connectivity within Battle River-Crowfoot; Federal infrastructure funding for municipalities; equalization and transfer payments; preserving and developing national parks, post-covid plans for small business and creating investment opportunities, and finally implications to democracy regarding health and individual rights.

Answers from each candidate closely followed the assertions in their opening

remarks, with few surprises.

A common thread, heard from each candidate, was a need for change, each presenting their and their party’s views on what that change should look like.

Each candidate was given three minutes for closing remarks.

Editor’s Note: Liberal Party of Canada candidate for Battle River Crowfoot, Leah McLeod, was not present during Wednesday’s forum. McLeod and the Liberal Party of Canada have been contacted by Caribou Publishing on six different occasions over the election period in an attempt to interview Ms. McLeod, with no response. There is no contact information for McLeod on the Liberal Party of Canada website, nor a bio.
