Long Live the King Charles III ascends

Late morning on Thursday, Sept. 8, news travelled around the world of Queen Elizabethʼs death. On her passing, the former Prince of Wales becomes King Charles III. Local MP applauds Poilievre’s Conservative leadership win Patricia Harcourt Staff Reporter

MP Damien Kurek is applauding the election of Pierre Poilievre as leader of the Conservative Party of Canada. The local MP for Battle River-Wainwright made an official statement on Poilievre’s successful leadership bid announced on Saturday, September 10. “It is a pleasure to congratulate the Hon. Pierre Poilievre on being elected leader of the Canada’s Conservatives and becoming the leader of the Official Opposition,” said Kurek. Kurek came out in favour of Poilievre and officially endorsed him for leader of his party during the leadership run that saw candidates from all perspectives

and political leanings within the Conservative movement take part. Jean Charest was considered the most “progressive” conservative taking part in the race for the party’s heart and soul, placing a distant second to the overwhelming win by Poilievre who garnered over 68 per cent of the vote. The party was formed in 2003 when the Progressive Conservative Party and the Reform/Alliance Party merged. Stephen Harper became the leader of this new party and prime minister of the country for many years. During that time, Poilievre was an MP in the Harper government and was known as one of his right hand men. From 2017 to 2022, Poilievre served as the shadow minister for finance and also had a short stay

as minister for jobs and industry. Kurek states that during the past eight months, Poilievre “connected with Canadians, who responded in an unprecedented way. Folks shared their struggles, fears and hope…and now a change is needed in Canada.” The new leader of the Conservative Party of Canada won on the first ballot with 68.15 per cent of the vote, winning all but eight of the 338 electoral ridings in the country. Charest won these eight ridings with four in Quebec and two in Ontario. Other candidates were Conservative MP Leslyn Lewis (9.69 per cent), former Ontario MPP Roman Baber (5.03 per cent), and MP Scott Atchison one per cent). See POILIEVRE P22

Town of Daysland welcomes Jody Quickstad as new CAO

Leslie Cholowsky Editor

Daysland has a new Chief Administrative Officer (CAO), as Jody Quickstad started in the position on Thursday, Sept. 1. One day earlier, the ATB Financial building, owned by the town, had been seriously damaged in a robbery, and Quickstad rose quickly to the call for action. “It was unfortunate to start off my first week responding to something like this,” he says. Quickstad most recently worked in Mannville, where he’d been the CAO for the past five years. Mannville has a population of 765, very similar to Daysland’s size. Quickstad says he was raised in a small town, and grew up around the Armena and Viking areas. He says, “My father was a grain buyer, and that meant we moved around quite a bit.” But that makes him very familiar with small town living. Quickstad says Mannville has an administration succession plan, and when he saw the vacancy in Daysland, he saw it as an opportunity for himself going forward. He has a long history with municipal governments, starting with his family. He says when the family lived in Vermilion River County, his father worked for public works and his mother worked in the administration office. He

even spent summers working for the county. That brought an awareness of the work done by municipalities, and it was something that he says, “I’ve always found interesting and varied. There are always changing rules and regulations, although we are primarily guided by the Municipal Government Act.” Quickstad was hired in mid-August, and attended the Aug. 23 Council meeting as a guest. He’s yet to hold his first meeting officially as CAO, but says he is looking forward to it. For now, he’s meeting with councillors, public works staff, and office staff, and has plans to tag along with councillors when they next attend their regional committee meetings. He says he’s familiar with the role of CAO, and now will take the time to learn more about Daysland and the region. He’s busy catching up on the town’s ongoing capital projects, and checking the business plan to see where Council is in that respect. Prior to working in Mannville, Quickstad worked in Vegreville, where he was CAO for six years, and worked a total of 18 years. With a population of 6,000-plus, it had a different set of challenges, but he says in many ways was the same as a smaller municipality, as the requirements are similar no matter the population. “Every unique municipality has their own challenges, my job is to work with

Council. We’re on the same team but with different roles. My goal is to help Council make the best decisions possible; defendable decisions.” When Quickstad is not working, he enjoys playing senior hockey and senior ball. He’s very active in the 55-plus leagues, and enjoys competitive slow pitch. He’s even travelled to the World’s Masters Games in Utah to compete. He also enjoys music, he plays the guitar and tries to jam monthly with friends if he can. He and his wife love to attend the Stony Plain Bluegrass Festival when they are able. Quickstad is married with two daughters. One has followed him into a career in municipal government, and the other is a dietitian.

He’s really looking forward to holding his first Council meeting, meeting Daysland residents, and getting to know the region’s ins and outs. “I’m looking forward to applying my years of experience to Daysland. Council and residents can expect a reasonable, very good response from me on the issues, and solid, defendable decisions. “People expect a certain level of service from their municipality, and I look forward to being part of providing that. Quickstad says that operating for so long without a day-to-day in-person CAO has been a unique challenge for Council, and that the next few weeks will bring about some stability and constancy going forward.

Jody Quickstad is Dayslandʼs new Chief Administrative Officer. He started on Sept. 1, and is looking forward to getting to work.
