Flagstaff youth initiative developing employment skills Leslie Cholowsky Editor

Since 2015, 200 Flagstaff youth, ranging in age from 15 to 30, have completed an employment training skills program, known as FYI (short for Flagstaff Youth Initiative) or Skills Link, designed to successfully help them enter the workforce.

FFCS Executive Director Lynne Jenkinson and FYI Program Director Jody Bergseth came together to talk about the success of the federally funded initiative.

The program’s target is anyone who fits in the age range, says Jenkinson.

“This initiative is meant to solve the issues of securing employment, and maintaining employment.”

Participants are paid to participate, and the first stage of each intake is to help develop employable skills. “We teach things like Word, Excel, and Outlook, and common workplace skills,” says Bergseth. Other courses include team building, financial literacy, and employment ethics and boundaries.

“These include the basic soft skills that get them ready to get to work.”

After the first stage, 16 weeks of inhouse learning, participants approach potential employers to start work.

The program offers incentives to employers by subsidizing part of the wages paid over the next 31 weeks.

Jenkinson says the program has evolved over the past five years, and now includes a Personality Dimensions class, where participants get insight into different personality traits and how to interact between their own and different traits.

Essentially the program picks up where schooling lets off.

Jenkinson says that participants are often coming to them after having completed a year or two of post-secondary schooling and discovering that their courses just aren’t for them.

“Our system can sometimes tend to defeat people’s dreams,” she says.

Many youth are forced to take a job, any job, and potentially miss out on the opportunity to pursue, or discover, their dreams. She thinks that getting this kind of information at a younger age is an advantage.

The program is designed at a local level to fill the needs here. Jenkinson, through FFCS, negotiates the grant funding and reporting.

“They’re paid to attend,” she says, with participants earning minimum wage, seven hours a day, five days a week.

“If they take it seriously, they are paid to attend and paid to listen to the advice and employment skills we’re offering.”

The program offers participants certification in first aid, Food safe, Pro Serve, Can Serve, and even construction/in-

dustry safety courses. “It’s a thousand dollars worth of courses paid for by the federal government.”

Bergseth says the last two intakes have been completely full, as word of the program, and its success, has spread.

Once participants reach the job stage, the program provides that financial support to make it enticing to a potential employer, and continues to offer skill building support to participants if they find, once employed, that they need some additional assistance.

“Some people just need a leg up,” says Jenkinson. “We’ve opened up their world.”

While the participants go through the program as a group, Bergseth says each have different initial skill sets, which can present a challenge in delivering a course that is effective to all.

“It’s a group, but it becomes individual work as well. Some people need support in different areas.”

Bergseth is a teacher by trade, and admits that sometimes she can get a little ‘teachery,’ during the course. “We want

to guide them, but really, we want them to take on their own training. We’re not forcing anything on the participants.

We’re just asking them to show up, have an honest desire to learn, and be willing to do the work.”

Jenkinson and Bergseth say that if a participant doesn’t show up, they don’t get paid. “We’ve seen some who’ve left the course, and eventually end up back in their old jobs. You get out of it what you put in.”

The program is run and funded through the federal Employment and Social Development Canada arm of the government.

“If designed well, these types of courses are very effective,” says Jenkinson, who takes a certain amount of pride in the success of the program offered in Flagstaff. She says she’s seen similar programs that she doesn’t believe offer the same level of development to participants.

Employers also help identify successes and challenges by completing evaluations.

Indoor mask rules return provincewide as COVID-19 cases surge again Leslie Cholowsky Editor

In response to Alberta’s rising COVID19 cases, as well as hospitalizations, Premier Jason Kenney announced new rules in a press conference on Friday, Sept. 3, which came into play the next day.

Effective Saturday, Albertans must wear masks in all indoor public spaces, including public transportation.

Also starting Saturday, any place of business with a liquor licence in Alberta, that is restaurants, cafes, bars, pubs, and nightclubs must end alcohol service at 10 p.m.

In terms of social gathering restrictions, there was a strong recommendation that unvaccinated Albertans limit indoor social gatherings to close contacts of two cohort families, up to a maximum of 10 people.

It was also recommended that employees working from home continue to do so, or revert back to doing so.

Employees working in indoor settings, must mask, except when at their individual work stations.

There is no change to testing, and the upcoming change has been delayed indefinitely.

Asymptomatic testing is no longer recommended, however.

In addition to bringing in mandatory masking, and the other recommendations, the province announced a vaccination incentive program available to Albertans 18 or older who got their first or second dose of an approved COVID-19 vaccine between Sept. 3 and Oct. 14. Albertans

must register online or by phone, with proof of vaccination, and will receive a $100 debit card.

Persons vaccinated before Sept. 3 are not eligible to receive this incentive.

The province said Tuesday, Sept. 7 that there are presently 15,486 active cases of COVID-19, with 602 in hospital, and 137 patients in Intensive Care.

The seven-day positivity rate is presently at 11.67 per cent.

Of those presently in hospital with COVID19, 21.1 per cent are considered fully vacci-

nated, 4.65 have had at least one dose of a vaccine, and 74.25 per cent are unvaccinated.

There are presently 17 active cases within

Flagstaff County. Camrose County has 31 cases, an the City of Camrose has 70 cases.

Beaver County has 33 cases.

Don’t let federal election outshine municipal nomination days As Canadians are inundated with federal election stories in the news, in preparation for the Sept. 20 election, it might be easy to forget that preparations for the local municipal elections are also underway.

Nomination day for all municipal elections shares the federal election date, and anyone thinking of putting their name forward for their local Council elections, scheduled for this October, must have their nominations filed by Sept. 20. This includes School Board Trustee elections.

I’m afraid that with all the federal hullabaloo that people will think they have time to think about municipal elections afterwards, but that will be too late.

Ideally, there would be an election held in each of our Flagstaff municipalities, with more candidates than positions to be filled, but sadly, that’s often not the case.

That’s where the timing of this federal election grates, as national issues tend to take over, when municipal elections are just as important, in my mind, if not more so.

We still have a few weeks, and every municipality in the region has nomination packages ready to go, we just need interested, engaged, and capable people willing to let their names stand!

Municipal Councils are important, and need to stay in the forefront of our minds, even as we try to determine who will get our votes in the federal election.

And I urge anyone with an interest in serving for the next term to pick up their nomination package now, or talk to serving councillors and find out more about the job. Don’t let the opportunity pass by!

If you’re not interested, but you know someone who you think would fit in the job, now is the time to talk to them!

Living well: The importance of communication Whether our communication vehicle is verbal, written or non-verbal, it is important for good self-care and living well.

When we practice good two-way communication we can better understand ourselves and others.

Communication is best when it is two-way because listening and paying attention helps the other person feel heard and valued. Sometimes just listening is all a person needs to be able to feel better or solve a problem.

Expressing feelings and ideas does not come easily to some so this is very important in order for them to feel safe to share. With verbal communication, listening also does not come easily to everyone but here are a few tips that might help.

Things like: 1. Stopping what you are doing and looking at the person who is speaking and giving them your full attention.

2. Paraphrasing and asking questions at the appropriate times, which lets the speaker know that you are paying attention.

3. Not interrupting because it sends a message that you are listening.

4. Asking what the person needs is very helpful. Some people find it easier to communicate in writing; whether they write little notes, stories, poetry, or a blog. If someone you care about asks you to read something they have written, it is important that you honour them by doing so. It is their way of expressing themselves.

Asking if they want you to just read or if they want feedback (they may not want you to say anything in return) adds to the communication and shows you are interested.

Non-verbal communication comes in the form of facial expressions, body language, the way a person dresses or behavioural changes and more.

This is the hardest form of communication to be clear about and may need clarification in case we misinterpret.

Often when people are stressed or intimidated, they will use this type of communication. When we are in tune with someone it is much easier to pick up on these non-verbal cues.

Often people don’t realize that they are expressing themselves in this way so inquiring can produce a variety of responses such as denial, anger, tears, and more.

Asking the person if they wish to talk about something may result in some very valuable problem solving but if they are not ready to talk you may have to accept that and tell them you are there for them should they want to eventually share.

Non-verbal communication can also come in the form of art, dance, or music. All forms of communication help to relieve stress by releasing negative feelings and emotions from the body and mind and in the right circumstances can be very therapeutic.

During times of duress and uncertainty it is important to encourage communication in order to stay healthy and aware of ourselves and those around us.

It helps us to get through difficult times.

If we don’t find a way to express ourselves we run the risk of internalizing our negative emotions to the point of chronic illness and the possible breakdown of relationships.

Here are a few things to ponder.

And just like that we had our first day of school! We met the teacher on Friday and were able to look at the classroom together. Zackery was very excited for school to start, however I

think he underestimates the five days in a row. We will see. I finished his “Schultüte” just in time and kept a few supplies home to fill it with. Of course, there will be some other things in there, too.

It was harder to make than anticipated. I know in Germany all the parents of Grade 1 kids meet and craft together at the kindergarten. So I imagine that's more fun than by myself. I hope all the

kids had a great first day, at home or in class.

Whist was played in Lougheed on Sept. 2. The men’s high was Bob Taylor, low was Dick Knapp, mystery was Blair Kneeland, and travel was John Coggan. The ladies’ high was Lorraine Musfelt, low was Viv Sparrow, mystery was Rita Palmer, and travel was Viv Firkus. The next game will be held in Lougheed on Sept. 9.

Energy Minister tours Hardisty Terminal; meets with Mayor and Reeve Leslie Cholowsky Editor

Alberta Energy Minister Sonya Savage, along with Camrose MLA Jackie Lovely, joined senior staff from Gibson Energy and USD for a site tour of the Hardisty Terminal, which is the largest independent storage facility in Canada.

Gibson and USD’s innovative diluent recovery unit provides full market access for heavy Canadian crude to North American refineries.

Savage and Lovely specifically toured Gibson’s Terminal assets, the Hardisty Energy Terminal (DRU) and the USD Rail Loading facility.

There they learned that USD's Hardisty Rail Terminal plays an important role in shipping Alberta crude oil; capable of loading approximately 200,000 barrels per day of DRUbit and Dilbit.

After finishing the tour of Gibson, Savage and Lovely also met with and held a roundtable discussion with council members and officials from the Town of Hardisty and Flagstaff County including Mayor Douglas Irving, and Reeve Don Kroetch.

Savage’s office says that during the discussion, a number of topic areas were discussed including how some issues in the oil and gas sector are also impacting

their municipalities, the contribution and investment of the oil and gas

companies in their communities, and a number of other community-fo-

cused issues.

Harvest Celebration to feature performance by famous Canadian band Leslie Cholowsky Editor Harvest Celebration 2021 is a fundraiser for the Royal Alexandra Hospital Foundation to support the Lois Hole Hospital for Women.

This annual gala helps raise essential funds that help support innovative models of care, groundbreaking research, and specialized programs and services for all women from across northern Alberta and beyond.

This year’s gala will be held via CTV television on Saturday, Sept 18, at 5 p.m. local time and will feature none other than Canadian recording group the Barenaked Ladies.

Building on one of the group’s best-known hits, “If I had a million dollars,” the foundation’s goal this year is to raise $1 million.

This is the second year in a row that the gala will be presented as a free televised concert.

It’s normally an in-person black tie gala, moved to this format due to the pandemic.

Last year’s headliner was Jann Arden.

Over the course of their remarkable career, Barenaked Ladies have

sold over 15 million albums, written multiple top 20 hits, garnered two Grammy nominations, won eight Juno Awards, had a Ben & Jerry’s ice cream named after them (“If I Had 1,000,000 Flavours”), participated in the first-ever “spaceto-earth musical collaboration” with astronaut Chris Hadfield, and garnered an international fan base whose members number in the millions.

In 2018, the band was inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame.

Some employers choose not to take the subsidy, which just allows that funding to be put back in to programming, the pair say.

“We’re constantly talking about networking and volunteering, and the need to build connections in the community, and see what professions, what jobs are out there.”

Jenkinson and Bergseth often use their own connections and knowledge of the area, and province, to help expand the opportunities available to participants.

“But I don’t want to burn bridges with my own connections,” says Bergseth. “I have to trust that a participant won’t tarnish my reputation.”

Jenkinson says that she wants more people to know about the program, and to change how people think about it.

“It’s not a job placement program,” says Jenkinson. Participants need to find a job. “But we can help them do that.”

Past participants think so highly of the program, they are recommending it to others, and employers have often taken on multiple participants.

Bergseth says that despite the lower age range for the program, her advice to younger participants is always, “I don’t want you here if you should be in high school.”

She stresses that this is not a vocational type of training course. “It’s not to say that we haven’t had younger participants, or won’t work with them, my message is ‘don’t quit

school to come here.’”

The pair say, “This isn’t just for people without a plan going forward, people do have plans, sometimes those haven’t panned out.

“We’ve definitely had some instances where a participant doesn’t necessarily want to work, but they want a wage.

But then also, some of our clients have had university degrees coming in, or are a year in to a course that just wasn’t for them. We get all types of situations.

“We’ve had people doing skills link while working elsewhere.

They are looking at a new future.”

The program didn’t slow down during the pandemic, as courses

MP Candidate Profile: John Irwin, Veteran’s Coalition Party of Canada Patricia Harcourt Staff Reporter

John Irwin, federal candidate for the Veterans Coalition Party of Canada, has been busy knocking on doors to introduce himself to the voters in Battle River-Crowfoot.

At 48, Irwin and his wife Deanna live in Fabyan, located just west of Wainwright. After 20 years in the Army he is now retired and has decided to throw his hat in the political ring representing a party he can get behind in a big way.

Irwin says he is using his own money to campaign, and has been eager to go since before the writ was dropped.

“I’ve been out campaigning,” he said, “pounding the beat” to get his message out that this new party of his has something to offer people who believe in personal freedom and in finding ways to make life easier for society’s vulnerable citizens, such as ex-military, seniors and aboriginal people.

“We don’t have a lot of money in the party,” he said, a party he said believes in raising funds through donations only. But Irwin said he is also using his own funds to finance his campaign.

“It’s worth it to reach people,” he said, describing the party as “a combination of former lefties and righties” who are now aligned in what he calls the ‘political centre’ with a “live and let live” mentality.

The party also stands for protecting personal freedoms “from government over reach, abuses, threats, and intimidation,” he said, citing the coronavirus pandemic as one example of this over reach.

“Who is the government to tell you not to travel or where to travel,” he said. And mandatory testing for the virus should not be mandated but be up to the individual to decide.

“Your body, your choice,” he said. “Common sense should prevail,” such as staying home if you feel sick, which is also a personal choice. Irwin indicated the rules would be different for a “contagious and lethal” virus like Ebola, cut compared the COVID-19 virus to any respiratory illness.

Irwin also stated that his choice is not to be vaccinated against COVID-19. And he decried the restrictions used by some provinces in fighting the disease.

“This province has had more liberties,” he said, referring to Alberta.

But he feels other provinces have had unreasonably tight restrictions, including Ontario where he originally hails from.

But he was quick to add that “we’re not anti-

vaxxers, it just should be your choice.”

As for the protests dogging Liberal leader Justin Trudeau, he is against any violence but says he understands why people are angry. “I condemn their throwing stones but a lot of people are angry, fed up.” He referred to a “snitch line” he said is being used to turn in people who aren’t following the COVID-19 health rules as one example.

But the party is also standing up for vulnerable citizens, he says, such as seniors.

“I don’t think any pension should be taxed,” he said, noting that “seniors have paid in for over 40 years to the Canada Pension Plan,” and shouldn’t have to pay taxes on either CPP or Old Age Security.

As for the extra $500 a year promised by the Liberals for seniors’ pensions, Irwin calls this “a slap in the face,” adding: “They should be getting $500 more a month not a year. “The majority of pensioners need it, they’ve worked 40 plus years and few have company pensions.”

Irwin says he gets a military pension but pays over $600 in taxes every month.

His party wants to cut back on funding some sources in order to give more to people in Canada who need it.

Irwin said his party wants a review of foreign aid spending. “We’re still giving aid to China,” he said, by way of example of why a review might be needed.

The Veterans Coalition party also wants to see a moratorium on immigration for a couple of years to put more money back into Canada’s economy.

However, the candidate says: “I have been asked on the street about that,” and he has been accused by some of racism.

“We’re not racists,” said Irwin. “We are very diverse, and we are very LGBTQ friendly.” He explained the reason for a proposed pull back on foreign aid and immigration was necessary to help out Canadians, such as those in the Aboriginal community.

Irwin said many in the Aboriginal community “want to be part of the system. We want to stand side by side with them.” And he called clean water in every community a human right.

As a military man who did two tours of duty in Afghanistan and saw his share of traumatic action, Irwin said he has “witnessed a lot of things.”

And he doesn’t think the government adequately handled the recent pull out of Canadians and others from that country.

For that reason, he “has a lot of sympathy” for the separatist stance of the Maverick Party, but remains a staunch and loyal Canadian.

“I love this nation. I fought for this country, I carried a rifle for this country, I did it for 20 years,” he said.

But he wants more support for the military.He feels that support has declined over the last six years.

But if he is elected, he promises to take the pay cut for MPs as proposed by his party.

“If elected, I will do it myself,” he said. “That’s a Parliamentarian’s responsibility. I believe in the 30 per cent pay cut.” Instead, he says the last set of MPs gave themselves pay raises - twice.

“We want people to keep their money and go about their business,” he said. “We don’t want to change the gun laws,” but does want to repeal an order in council passed last year banning semi-automatic weapons.

“We need firearm experts to do a review, people who have used and understand guns,” Irwin stated.

“We’ve seen a lot of our freedoms compromised. I understand we don’t have a Second Amendment in Canada (as there is in the United States). But we can still express ourselves.

“People are angry about the national debt,” he said, and the possibility of a sales tax on house sales, something Trudeau denied would happen during a press conference on Monday.

Irwin espouses “cutting from the top,” and wants to “send some blue collar basics back to Ottawa.”

In the meantime prior to the Sept. 20 federal election, he will continue to campaign and talk about his party’s platform.

“I enjoy reaching out and talking to people,” he said.

And if elected, “I want to govern with fairness and bring back accountability.”

Former RCMP Corporal receives Top 40 under 40 award Leslie Cholowsky Editor

RCMP Corporal Trent Cleveland, presently with the Wetaskiwin Integrated Traffic Unit, but formerly stationed at the Killam RCMP Detachment recently received a Top 40 under 40 award.

The award is issued by the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP).

“The annual IACP 40 Under 40 award recognizes 40 law enforcement professionals under the age of 40 from around the world who demonstrate leadership, exemplify commitment to their profession, and have a positive impact on their communities and the field of policing.”

Cleveland was nominated by Killam RCMP Cst. Jake Rains.

Cleveland says, “I am very honoured and proud to have been selected.”

Cleveland was the only RCMP on the list for 2021, and one of four Canadian police officers selected for this year’s award.

An excerpt of Cleveland’s biography from IACP says, “Cpl. Cleveland is a recipient of the Scott Burko Memorial Award for his distinguished contribution to performance management and has been bestowed an Honors and Recognition award for his dedication and contribution to the Eastern Alberta District.

“He was also recognized by elected provincial officials for his service to the constituency of his jurisdiction.”

Cleveland says, “Law enforcement is more about service to the community and its citizens than about enforcing law - it’s building relationships and providing guidance and support.”

DaysArts planning new concert series, reopening movies Leslie Cholowsky Editor

After having their concert series abruptly end in the spring of 2020, the DaysArts group was unable to finish the season due to COVD-19 restrictions.

However, the group recently sat down to a meeting and formalized their plans to reopen this fall.

DaysArts member Sharon Eshpeter says, “We decided we’ll open as long as we are allowed, with movies starting up on Oct. 1, and the last concert from the 2020 season rescheduled for Nov. 3.”

She says there are also plans for a shortened 2022 season, with four acts booked starting in January and ending at the end of March.

“As long as things remain open,” she adds. She says Friday’s announcement over mandatory masking shouldn’t make a big difference to their plans. “We were going to recommend mask wearing, but now we don’t have to, because the province has mandated it.”

Eshpeter says, as a group, the DaysArts board is “hoping to return to some semblance of order.”

She says past ticket holders to November’s concert performance, from the previous season, will get in free.

Tickets for the upcoming 2022 season won’t be available until later in the year.

Eshpeter says, “We don’t know if we

will get all of our regular patrons back, we hope so.” She says that the group is anticipating slightly smaller crowds to start, as people become more comfortable with attending.

She says, “When COVID-19 hit, we had six acts booked for our 2021-22 season already. All of them agreed to hold for one year, but over the last few months, three of them have altered their plans.”

That left three acts, and so the group booked a fourth to round out the season.

Eshpeter says that the group was lucky enough during shut down to receive grant funding sufficient to pay their fixed expenses. She says the group is grateful for funding from Flagstaff County, the Town of Daysland, the Daysland Ag. Society, and the Daysland Rec Board, as well as the Battle River Community Foundation.

Receiving these funds and some provincial COVID funding meant that they didn’t have to dig into their concert capital.

While the concert series is partially covered by the Alberta Foundation for the Arts (AFA) funding, Eshpeter says that recent years have seen grant applications vs. disbursements reduced by 4050 per cent. She says one welcome surprise from the previous series that due to cancellations of performances province wide, AFA granted the full

amount applied for from the previous season, which is still just 60 per cent of the cost of an Alberta-based entertainer, and 50 per cent of the cost of a Canadian entertainer or group.

Eshpeter says that the 2022 season will bring in a variety of acts. “We think variety is important.

“I love to get patrons coming back and saying ‘You surprised me; I loved that.’”

She says the group plans to take in a smaller AFA Showcase this fall to preview new acts for future seasons.

“It will be interesting to see how many

concert series groups survived this around the province,” she adds.

As with many volunteer boards in the region, Eshpeter says that there are now a few vacant positions on the DaysArts board, and she invites anyone with an interest in the arts, and a willingness to work, to contact her.

She says there’s no requirement that board members be from Daysland, as they do consider themselves Daysland and District, and adds that she would love to see more patrons and even potential board members from the east.

Henday historian known throughout region passes Patricia Harcourt Staff Reporter

Well-known Viking, Alberta author and historian William “Peter” McArthur has passed away at age 82.

Unfortunately, his passing on Thursday, September 2, was the day his latest book, a novella and labour of love on the history of Erik the Red, was delivered in print.

It was just one of many ironies for the man who loved all history but especially the history of his maternal family (Norwegian) and his paternal (Scottish) family, and local history in general.

Peter combined this family lore and that of the area to gather much information, research and writing about a vast array of historical topics. He spent his twilight years writing about those topics so he could share his knowledge and findings with others.

For several years, Peter wrote about Viking, its current happenings, as well as its history in a weekly column for the local paper called “Common Sense.”

Every week it told lively and engaging stories of events and people who lived in Viking over many decades. He expressed that most problems in the world could be easily solved if a little common sense and logic was applied.

Peter especially loved to trace the steps of explorer Anthony Henday, who camped in this area on his journey through what is now western Canada.

Peter liked to write about history and spent much of his adult life uncovering details about the famous explorer. After 50 years of research, he published “Pearl of the West,” about the life and times of Henday.

The historical novel concerned the story of the explorer and his travelling companion, a young aboriginal girl named Pearl.

At the time, Peter said it was “based on the first recorded non-Native person to enter what is now called the province of Alberta.” Henday’s mission was to meet with native tribes of the far west as a Hudson

Peter described the book as “a dramatic novel that will acquaint you with the harsh realities of the 16th Century in Canada’s vast western frontier.”

His final book, “Erik the Red” is newly printed as he hoped to distribute copies to his family during Labour Day weekend.

The novella details Norseman king Erik the Red as well as son Leif Erikson's late journeys to early Canada.

Peter said his historical novella “may have been (Erik’s) glory days, or the glory days of his ancestry or followers.” Peter had spent many years studying the Norseman Sagas as part of his research.

This was the third book Peter released, the first being his own autobiography called “My Many Hats.”

He spent time in years past as a Viking town councillor expressing viewpoints often based on an historical perspective few others had at their disposal. He spent countless hours pouring over records at the legislative library, discovering documents about the now defunct drainage district and many other early Viking committees still relevant to Viking and area to this day.

It’s only natural then that this love of history would also extend to his own Clan McArthur family history.

In his usual diligent manner of investigation, Peter had compiled a great deal of information about his own family tree of Scottish ancestors.

He spent his final months digitizing binders of wedding records that he had ambitiously hoped to deliver to Clan McArthur in Scotland, before his health took a turn.

As with all of his historical and ancestral pursuits, it was a labour of love for him tracking down family members from Ontario and far beyond the seas into Scotland.

Peter’s “Erik the Red” book was published by Caribou Publishing and can be purchased online in the Amazon Kindle store or in paperback at Amazon.ca. Peter wanted Caribou Publishing to publish the book for him, as a front page story from an early 1920s edition of The Viking News (which appears in its entirety in chapter six) inspired his writing.

MP Candidate Profile: Dennis Trepanier, People’s Party of Canada Moush John Staff Reporter

Benalto’s Dennis Trepanier is representing the People’s Party of Canada (PPC) within the Battle RiverCrowfoot constituency for the federal election less than a month away.

Not new to the arena, Trepanier ran for Red Deer mayorship in 2013, and was the Deputy Mayor and former councillor of Blackfalds.

“I am concerned about the future of our country and the legacy we leave behind for generations of Canadians,” he said. “The current government has incurred an unsustainable debt; is fiscally irresponsible; has undermined Canadian sovereignty by taking direction for foreign entities (UN, WHO); and is actively committed to the destruction and redistribution of wealth and prosperity of Canada, particularly when it comes to the industry and economy of the western provinces.”

According to Trepanier, PPC is the only true conservative federal party left in Canada.

“All the others have succumbed to socialism, including the CPC. All other parties represent big government, government control, collectivism, unbridled fiscal irresponsibility (tax and spend promises).

“Ultimately, it’s a party’s platform that counts. The PPC has the best platform of all federal parties. The PPC represents small government, less government intervention, fiscal control and personal responsibility.”

Trepanier says his campaign is hinged on the following platforms – a return to common sense and sanity; respect and follow the Canadian constitution; repeal all Liberal bills that violate Canadian freedoms

and constitutional rights, namely C-6, C-16, C-10, etc.; bring the fiscal house in order within a single mandate; essentially, protect the right to life, including the unborn – his personal perspective, and liberty, and security of the person.

As a father and husband, Trepanier is pro-life. He is also an entrepreneur and business owner, having two incorporated businesses and a partnership.

He is also an IT professional, holding several certifications. Trepanier is based out of Benalto, but farms out of Donalda.

He said, “I believe the disastrous and irresponsible record of the Liberal government will no longer be tolerated by the governed and the sitting government will at best be reduced to a minority, perhaps voted out. I believe the nature of all parties will be revealed.

“In particular, in this election, the true nature of the CPC, they are no longer conservative.

“The CPC policies and promises reveal a non-conservative party that embraces the globalism of the Liberals, the socialism of the NDP, and the alarmism of the Greens.”

Trepanier said PPC is “fighting to win.”

“We are fighting for freedom, for democracy, for prosperity of all Canadians. I expect an awakening to the true nature of choice that Canadians have this election; that the PPC is the only true conservative party left in Canada and the only party that can lead Canada to prosperity, now and for generations.”

When it comes to beliefs, he stands with Maxime Bernier.

“I’m with Maxine Bernier when he says he doesn’t care about the colour of your skin, the province you live in, the God you worship, your sexual orientation, your heritage, etc. All I care is that you are Canadian.

democratic rights as a Canadian citizen.”

Trepanier explained that as he is campaigning through the Battle River-Crowfoot constituency, he has heard that constituents want a party that they can trust.

“Foremost in earning trust is a solid party platform,” he said. “The PPC platform is documented, conservative, and has not fundamentally changed from last term and will not change in the next. This is in contrast to the CPC platform, which drifts with the winds of polls and trends.

“Like all Canadians, the people of Battle RiverCrowfoot need to know that the government is responsible in managing our foreign relations, our military, our monetary system, our economy (especially O&G and agriculture) and our democratic rights and freedoms.”

Sandra Erickson, CP Correspondent from Sedgewick, carried on a first-day-of-Grade-1 tradition for her son Zackery that mirrors her own first day of school.

Erickson says, “It's a tradition in our part of Germany Bavaria, but also lots of other places.”

On Tuesday, Sept. 7, Zackery received his schultüte, a paper container made by Sandra.

She says, “It's filled with school supplies and little gifts/candy.”

Erickson followed the family tradition just as her mother did.

“I remember my mom making one at Kindergarten, the parents helping each other.

“I got one. We all took it to school on the first day of Grade 1 and opened it in class.

“I remember mine had Kinder chocolate and my pencil case. There may have been more but that's all I remember.”

She still remembers opening the Schultüte as one of the most exciting things about starting school.

Erickson says it’s essentially a large cone-shaped container, made of paper, and full of whatever parents choose to put in.

She adds, “The first day of Grade 1 is a turning point in life of every German child and family. So they celebrate big time. It's considered a rite of passage.”

Erickson did some research on the tradition, and

found that it goes back to the 18th century.

“Originally it was only the wealthy and privately schooled children. They received cones filled with toys and sweets. It wasn't until much later that lower class children were given public schooling.

Then the practice became mainstream and has since grown into a time honoured back-to-school routine.”

She says that today, most schultüte are mass produced, and she discovered that more than 700,000 of them are sold every year in Germany.

She made Zackery’s cone herself, saying, “It was harder to make than anticipated.

“I finished his just in time, and kept a few supplies home to fill it with.”

“In Germany, Switzerland, and Austria they are a part of first day of school tradition.”

Hello folks, I hope you enjoyed your labour day holiday and the wonderful harvest weather we are having. The combines are rolling even though the yields are less than desireable in parts of the county. Hopefully next year will be more productive.

I received some exciting baby news. Greg and Elize Hagen welcomed their second son on Sept.

2. Redge Dylan William Hagen made a speedy entrance weighing eight pounds, three ounces.

Mom and baby are doing well.

Grandparents are Darryl and Crystal Bourque and Greg's parents.

Great-grandparents are Carol and Bill Bourque, who are over the moon with joy, and Ted and Lynn Roen, both of Hardisty.

I remember when Hardisty hospital delivered babies and how ex-

citing that was. The hospital had a lovely routine that allowed mom's a five day stay. In that time the mother became comfortable with her baby, her breast milk came in, and she had assistance from staff to make theis routine comfortable or how to bottle feed and burp the little one.

She watched a baby bath and then practised herself the next day. She actually was able to get some sleep knowing her baby was well taken care of. Blood work, baby examinations by the doctor, and circumcisions were done if requested. By day five moms were ready to go home and rejoin the family.

Times have changed.

My friend was helping a senior gentleman clean out his home because he was moving to Long Term Care. He had some interesting old minutes from M. D. Flagstaff No. 364 regarding hospitalization around the 1960s.

I thought I would share this with you. "The time allowed for maternity cases shall be 14 days, unless complications arise

and the patient is ordered to stay in hospital by the doctor." My oh my, would a new Mom not feel rested after 14 days?

Heck, nowadays you are lucky to even be in the hospital 14 hours! Yes, times have certainly changed.

Do you ever wonder what the origin is of our labour day holiday? I did a little research. Labour Day, the first Monday in September, has been a statutory holiday in Canada since 1894. It originated in the first worker's rallies of the Victorian era.

Historically, workers marked the day with various activities including parades, speeches, games, and picnics. For many school children it is also the last day of summer holidays before the school year starts again.

But that isn't the best advice.

The right job is the job you love some days, can tolerate most days, and

still pays the bills. Almost nobody has a job they love every day... food for thought, eh? Happy Labour Day. I had an interesting chat with Karen Allard (the United Church Minister's wife). She asked about my wretched fractured leg and then the conversation led to gardens. She said when she and Paul arrived in Hardisty last summer, some of the church parishioners had planted a wonderful garden.

They had fantastic yields of many vegetables, especially the huge cucumbers. This year her cukes were just dismal.

They only grew three to four inches and, no matter how much she watered them, they just turned yellow then some shade of orange and died.

She wondered what she

did wrong, was it the excessive heat? After a while she asked Paul to see if the seed package was still around and if it would help solve their problems.

Well hallelujah, it certainly did. Karen had planted "pickling cucumbers" and they remain small! I am not an avid

gardner so I had never heard of specific cucumbers for pickling either. I know there are you folks out there that are rolling your eyes in disbelief...

Tee hee... mystery solved. ( Karen gave me permission to print this and give you a chuckle, thanks Karen.)

Last week I was happy to see that Batemans and Huses visited with the Wolds. Well, they did two years ago. That is what happens when one doesn’t check the dates on the Facebook posts. Since the visit, Sharon Huse has passed away.

Roseann Bauman, daughter Allison, and their dogs had a great trip to Banff on the weekend.

Vickie Cloakey, her daughter Lisa, and grandson Ben had an overnight trip to Edmonton to do some shopping; Ben had a visit with his dad.

Church services resumed on Sunday with a hymn singing service.

Laura Towers played the piano. It was nice to get back together again after the summer recess. We had lunch following the service. One person poured all of the coffee and the snacks were in individual packs. There is more than one way to handle this social distancing.

I have a new greatgrandson. Lance Emil Timmerman was born Sept. 1 in Red Deer. This is Doug’s second grandson. I now have five great-grandsons and one

great-granddaughter.

Doug and Alanna are looking after three year old Bowen while Kate is in hospital and finding it an exhausting task. They are loving every minute of it.

Marlin Rant lost his wallet in Regina a couple weeks ago. He left it on top of the gas pump when he went in to get a receipt because the machine was empty. He called the gas station and no one had turned it in.

He got a call from the Regina RCMP. They have his wallet and it sounds like everything is in it.

They are sending it to him since it is too far to go pick it up. Now that is a far better story than the robbery and theft stories that are so prevalent don’t you think?

The United Church Women have a new phone list for Alliance.

There are more than 10 new numbers since the one last September. The new list is $4.

The candidates running in the Sept. 20 federal election for the Battle River-Crowfoot constituency are: Green Party candidate Daniel Brisbin, Maverick Party candidate Jeff Golka, Vet-

ble over a four-day period prior to this: Friday, Sept. 10, Saturday, Sept. 11, Sunday, Sept.

12, and Monday, Sept. 13.

Hours on all days are 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Seeding time, again?!

Early harvest can be an opportunity to try something a little different this fall. Get the jump on spring work by seeding a fall cereal. Fall cereals have numerous advantages and can really work well in disrupting weed problems as well as saving time in the busy spring period.

The common winter cereals grown are winter wheat, fall rye, and winter triticale.

Fall cereals should be seeded in the Flagstaff area the last week of August or first week of September.

If there is some moisture in the topsoil it usually will germinate.

The goal is to have the plants be in the three leaf plus a tiller stage at the onset of winter. At this stage the plants have enough energy stored in the root crown to survive most winters and regrow first thing in the spring.

What are the advantages to seeding winter cereals? As yield is directly related to length of growing season, winter cereals can be expected to yield about 15 to 30 per cent more than a spring seeded cereal.

It spreads out the spring workload as part of the crop is already in the ground, come spring.

Due to the fact it is seeded the previous

spring, it matures and is harvested earlier than spring cereals. It can, more efficiently, utilize all the spring moisture available and can be filling the head during the hot days of summer.

As it heads earlier, it can also avoid insect pest damage like the wheat midge and wheat stem sawfly. It matures and is harvested earlier possibly giving you a better grade in the grain from a winter cereal, avoiding weathering and bleaching from poor fall weather.

It has a big advantage in weed control as you can use a cheap phenoxy herbicide (2,4-D or MCPA) to deal with winter annual weeds in the fall. Often, there is no need to use grassy herbicides in the spring as the crop will be ahead of wild oats and most other weeds. This also helps when battling herbicide-resistant weeds.

The crop does have to be thick enough and competitive enough to keep down germinating weeds. Spring germinating weeds will have little effect on crop yield.

Sounds too good to be true, right? It does have a few issues you need to consider. Winter survivability is not total. Because of this, it is

always a good idea to seed a little heavier than you would for a spring seeded crop. In terms of winter survival, fall rye does best, followed by winter triticale, then winter wheat.

Breeding efforts over the last 30 years have greatly improved winter wheat’s winter hardiness. You need to assess how much of the crop survived the winter in April. Even a thin crop stand in spring can compensate by tillering extensively and provide a profitable yield. The optimum spring stand is 20 plants per square foot. However, a stand of 10 -15 plants per square foot is still worth keeping.

There is also the consideration of how much of the fertilizer to use when seeding winter cereals. Phosphorus is essential for establishing a healthy crown and to get growth started in the spring. Nitrogen fertility can be met by side banding in the fall, which may run a risk of

loss due to leaching or denitrification, but there are fertilizer products that can reduce that risk. Split nitrogen applications at seeding and again at spring can work but rainfall is needed to get the nitrogen into the root zone.

Winter cereals also provides habitat for

ducks and upland game birds. It has many benefits and can fit nicely into a varied crop rotation. However, time in the fall for seeding is needed to make it work.

The River Jacks 780-390-0316 If you live in the Flagstaff Region or nearby, chances are you’ve had the good fortune of listening – or even dancing – to the varied musical stylings of The River Jacks.

Specializing in a seemingly never-ending list of country, rock and pop hits, the five-piece cover band has long since established themselves as a go-to entertainment source for wedding dances and corporate events.

“As a local band, our repertoire is influenced by all the people we play for,” explains Tom Lichak, who plays guitar and sings.

“We’ve had so much support in this region from everybody that hires us to play – on a trailer outside, or at a wonderful wedding, or corporate show. We get so much support. So we grow from what we get as requests from people in the audience. We’re always changing. And so the combination of us and the people in this region and the music that we all love, that’s what makes us unique. And we just want to play music that people want to hear and have some fun.”

Along with Lichak, a Daysland resident, The River Jacks is made up of Chad Szott, also of Daysland, who plays electric guitar and pedal steel guitar, Jeff Orom, of Camrose, who plays drums and sings, Garrett Richaud, of Forestburg, who plays electric bass guitar, and Myra Marshall, of New Norway, who sings and plays acoustic guitar.

The band’s beginnings date back nearly a decade ago, when Garrett, Jeff, and Chad met at the University of Alberta’s Augustana Campus in Camrose.

“We were all in different years and we had got the idea to form a band,” Chad recalls. “And so, we had started jamming together.”

Around that time, Chad also met Tom through work. The two discovered that they shared an interest in music and they both played guitar.

“And Tom told me he’d played in bands his whole life,” Chad says. “Growing up with his dad’s band, Tom had played wedding dances every weekend back when the music scene was hopping and live dances were the thing.”

Chad admits he was used to outings that were deejayed and figures he hadn’t even seen a live band until he was about 15 years old. The idea of actually playing in a band that performed locally was a foreign – yet extremely enticing – concept to him.

“I’d picked up the guitar because I liked music that I was listening to and I wanted to recreate that,” Chad adds. “But the idea of playing in a band seemed so far off to me.... And so, Tom had kind of introduced the three of us to the idea that we could play locally and play at dances.”

Before long, The River Jacks ended up adding their fifth member.

“One of the things that brought us together was the Bailey Theatre in Camrose,” Tom explains. “The Bailey always has a lot of things going on and I met Myra there.”

Myra, of course, was already a well-known local musician. Her addition helped to solidify a talented group of like-minded friends.

“Each one of The River Jacks brings their own experience and talent and musical perspective to the picture,” notes Tom. Chad is grateful for how the band’s formation worked out, acknowledging that they were fortunate.

“I don’t think the band would have been what it was today if Jeff and I hadn’t ended up meeting Garrett and then meeting Tom, and then meeting Myra.”

Myra jokes that part of the reason she joined The River Jacks is because it comes with her own bodyguard: Garrett.

“I carry all of the heavy things,” admits the physically imposing bassist, who played in a heavy metal band before helping to form The River Jacks.

Chad adds: “Garrett and Myra stand next to each other on stage and there's always one bit where Garrett comes down to Myra's mic to say something before the song starts and...”

“Puts his back out,” Myra finishes with a chuckle.

Joined by their obvious love of performing music, the band members also share technological knowhow.

“We’re all fairly comfortable with technology,” Tom says. “We’ve got electronic drums and we’ve got guitar modeling and guitar synthesis, wireless units. All that stuff is going on onstage at the same time to just make the show run smoothly. So, that has helped us out a lot.”

However, it’s not all smooth sailing. Besides the obvious challenges associated to the pandemic, one of the band’s biggest struggles is trying to find the time to get together to practice.

“We’re all doing our own things on the side, and trying to find time to rehearse new material isn’t always easy,” notes Garrett.

“But even with that, one of the really nice things we have going on is, even though we may not be able to practice together as much as we might like, I’m never worried about it because I know that everyone here will show up ready, prepared, and good to go. And that’s pretty nice.”

Tom says: “Yeah, it’s nice to have people you can count on.”

Chad adds: “Just like a family.”

Garrett repeats: “Just like a family.”

Myra says with a smile: “My band family.”
