26th RY-TOF TOURNAMENT MOUSH JOHN Editor

T

hough the 26th Annual Ry-Tof tournament started on a great note, by the end of Monday, Sept. 5, weather played spoiler and the final rounds were called off. A staple for Tofield, Ryley, and Lindbrook communities, the Labour Day weekend brought together 67 teams this year – 35 in Ryley and 32 in Tofield. Some games were also held in the Lindbrook ball diamonds. “We had almost record heat for two days, and then steady rain on the last day that caused tournament plans to change,” said Vanita Eglauer, spokesperson for the Ry-Tof tournament committee. “Diamond conditions deteriorated to a degree that player safety became a concern; and with heavy rain right up to early afternoon since morning, we gathered umpires and several team reps, and discussed options. “In the interest of player safety, we finally made the decision that the remainder of this year’s tourna-

ment would be cancelled.” Although there will be no winner announced for this year’s tournament, the qualifying teams from each event would receive the prize money, divided equally among the teams.

We had almost record heat for two days, and then steady rain on the last day that caused tour nament plans to change “As a cooperative fundraising tournament between the Tofield Ag. Society and Beaver Heritage and Ag. Society, the event usually sees close to 80 teams, but that hasn’t been the case post-pandemic,” Eglauer added. “This year we didn’t approach businesses specifically for sponsorship, but did receive

sponsorship from RC Strategies from Sherwood Park and Nobal Buds from Tofield. Canadian Brewhouse also provided us with team vouchers.” With many returning teams each year, it’s a testament to the success of the event. This year teams came from Edmonton, St. Albert, Beaumont, Camrose, Vegreville, and other parts of the province, besides Tofield, Ryley and surrounding areas. “We’re so thankful for all the support we receive each year,” she said. “A big shoutout to the Town of Tofield, Village of Ryley, Ry-Tof tournament committee members, all the teams and their families, volunteers, concession operators, and all the community members and local businesses for welcoming everyone who participate in our annual event. Without you none of this would be possible.”
