DAYSLAND ATB DESTROYED
Brazen night robbery in Daysland produces two suspects Town and ATB Financial left to deal with aftermath of destruction Leslie Cholowsky Editor
On Wednesday, Aug. 31, Killam RCMP got a call at 4:13 a.m. of a break and enter to the Daysland ATB Financial. When police arrived, the suspects were gone, and police found a building in tatters. Survelliance has since revealed that that suspects had used a stolen ‘Zoom Boom’ to damage and remove part of the building’s front entrance to gain access to the ATM within. A ‘zoom boom’ is essentially a piece of machinery that is similar to a forklift, but
with a boom that can extend forward and upward, similar to a crane. RCMP reports that early in the investigation, the Central Alberta District Crime Reduction Unit identified the individuals who they believed were involved in the crime. As the investigation evolved, the RCMP helicopter was called in and two suspects were arrested near Bashaw. RCMP reports that parts of the ATM, significant amounts of currency, vehicles, and other stolen items have been recovered. Police have charged two men with Break and Enter, multiple counts of
Mischief over $5,000, as well as multiple counts of Possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000. Nicholas Avin Klink, (29) from Lacombe County, was charged with: Break and Enter to commit; Mischief over $5,000-four counts; Possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000four counts; Possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000; Fraudulent Concealment; Possess break and enter tools; Fail to comply with release conditions-three counts; Obstruction; Careless use of ammunition; Possession of a controlled substance; and Dangerous Driving.
Klink has been remanded in custody bail not spoken to with his next court appearance set for Sept 2. in Red Deer. RCMP charged Tyler Jackson Patten (32), also a resident of Lacombe County, with: Break and Enter to commit; Mischief over $5,000-two counts; Possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000-five counts; Possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000, fraudulent concealment, and possession of break and enter tools. Patten was also remanded in custody bail not spoken to; his next court appearance is set for Sept. 6 in Killam. See ROBBERY P17

Lovely sworn-in to Treasury Board and finance committee Patricia Harcourt Staff Reporter
Camrose MLA Jackie Lovely was recently appointed to the Treasury Board and Finance Committee in July following a Cabinet shuffle by Premier Jason Kenney. Lovely had been appointed to the Treasury Board along with Grande Prairie MLA Tracy Allard. Vacancies were left in Cabinet after Kenney announced he will be stepping down once a new UCP leader and premier will chosen Oct. 6. Lovely wasn’t swornin to her new finance committee position until August 22, following her
win earlier in the month of the Camrose Constituency UCP nomination. This will ensure she will be running again in the provincial election this spring. “I am honoured to have been sworn-in into my new position with the Treasury Board and Finance Committee,” said Lovely in her August 31 announcement. “I view this position as another opportunity to work hard on behalf of my constituents and all Albertans.” The committee for this ministry of the treasury board and finance is responsible for budget planning, financial management and economic
analysis and administrates tax and revenue programs. Lovely’s release stated that this ministry: “Focuses on economic accountability, human resources and communication, leadership and the regulation of Alberta’s liquor, cannabis, financial, securities, insurance, and pension sectors.” Lovely will continue to serve in her capacity as parliamentary secretary to the Associate Minister for the Status of Women. “I am proud to take on a new role that will allow me to represent the financial interests of my constituents and Albertans across the
province,” stated Lovely. “Strong fiscal strategy is essential as we build Alberta’s economic future,” she said, “and I look forward to working with the new Minister of Finance on our shared vision.” Former Minister of Finance Travis Toews left to run for the UCP leadership, and has been replaced by Jason Nixon. “I’m confident that these changes to Cabinet and the new members at the table will contribute to even stronger growth and prosperity in the future,” said Kenney, of his new appointments to cabinet. He also said this would help to shore up the “strong economic
growth and job creation” taking place in Alberta. Kenney promised,
“stable and steady government that will allow this growth to continue.”

Hot weather sees some farmers starting their days as the sun sets to avoid the heat
BILL SMOLKI PHOTOS
As harvest continued last week in scorching hot temperatures, some moved to avoiding the peak-heat hours, choosing to work in the relative cool of sunset or even during the night.
Agriculture for Life urges farmers to ‘Be Seen and Be Safe this Harvest’ as they move equipment on roadways Agriculture for Life issued a public service announcement on Monday, Aug. 29 urging farmers and motorists to be safe. As harvest gets underway, there will be an increase of slow-moving equipment on rural roads, which can create a hazard for farm equipment operators, says the organization. Thirteen per cent of farm-related fatalaties across Canada are traffic related, most involving tractors.
The most frequent type of single-vehicle collision is a tractor being driven too close to the shoulder, and rolling into the ditch. The most common multi-vehicle collision is caused by farm machinery being hit as it turns onto a public roadway or highway. Travel Tips for Farmers and Ranchers •Avoid high traffic times, busy roads, bad weather and night driving. •Make sure all warning flashers,
Quite a few Flagstaff-area farmers got a treat as they viewed the night sky on Saturday, Sept. 3, with the Northern Lights overhead for a stunning view.
flags, lights and slow-moving vehicle (SMV) emblems are clean, visible and working properly. •Watch for passing vehicles when making left turns. •Avoid overhead powerlines. •Stay alert for hazards such as soft shoulders, narrow bridges, loose gravel, bumps, potholes and deep ruts. Travel Tips for Motorists •Be aware of slow-moving farm machinery. The typical speed of a piece of
farm machinery is 30-40 km/hour. You need to slow down to react! Be patient. •Watch for vehicles marked with slow-moving vehicle signs (a bright orange triangle with a red border) and flashing amber lights. •Do not drive in equipment blind spots where operators cannot see you. Keep back a safe distance – at least 50 feet, when following. •Be aware of intersections where farm equipment might turn.
