Lamont County declares state of Agricultural Disaster Wick said the water damage was even hindering economic development in the County.

“We had more than 33 inches of rain and another up near Hilliard has reported 38 inches of rain,” said Division Five Councillor Neil Woitas.

Council voted to declare a state of Agricultural Disaster due to excessive moisture during the 2026 growing season, and authorized the Reeve to sign a letter to notify Alberta's Minister of Agriculture and Irrigation Tara Sawyer, Rural Municipalities of Alberta President Kara Westerland, and the Agricultural Financial Services Corporation.

BY JOHN MATHER Lamont County joined with several neighbouring municipalities Aug 25 when it declare the county an agricultural disaster due to the unprecedented amounts of rain that fell May through July.

The counties of Sturgeon, Westlock County, Beaver County and Thorhild County had declared agricultural disaster areas earlier this summer.

A motion was passed to send a resolution to council at the regular Agricultural Services Board meeting held Aug. 12.

Acting Chief Administrative Officer Christiane Benoit told council producers in Lamont County have reported lower that average crops of canola, corn, oats, peas, and wheat.

Opinion Smith delivers a very pro-Canada stance on tariffs

Prior to her speech to Albertans last Wednesday, I felt the province should do something in the way of slowing the sale of energy to the U.S. in order to show we didn’t take U.S. President Trump’s tariffs and trade war lightly.

If other provinces halted or slowed sales of energy, lumber, potash and other critical minerals the U.S. needs, I felt U.S. governors and senators would put the pressure on Trump to stop his silly nonsense.

Especially in light of U.S. midterm elections fast approaching where Republicans stand a very good chance of losing their majorities in both the U.S. senate and the House of Representatives.

Smith seemed cool to this however, which led to the usual cries of “she’s a separatist” or “she’s a traitor to Canada” from the usual gang of so-called influencers such as Thomas Lukaszuk and Naheed Nenshi.

But then Smith addressed Albertans.

“As I’ve said before, tariffs and counter tariffs are harmful to both countries,” she stated. “They disrupt business, threaten jobs and strain relations between allies.”

She said the situation also presented an excellent opportunity for Canada to become a stronger nation. And she indicated several pundits and policy-makers had outlined several different pathways.

“Although I understand the need to respond strongly to these tariffs, I can not think of a more disastrous policy decision than taxing Alberta oil to the United States,” Smith stated.

She said it would extinguish the jobs of thousands of Albertans and it would devastate the Canadian economy.

She further explained if Canada put a tariff on our oil exported to the U.S., that country would immediately respond by putting a 50 per cent tariff on the oil they export to Canada, primarily to Ontario, Quebec and the Atlantic provinces.

It’s funny how Doug Ford, Premier of Ontario, has failed to mention this in any of his demands for Alberta to join the Elbows Up crowd and stop oil shipments to the U.S, Surely his economic bureaucrats have told him this.

But then he also knows this would greatly concern his voting base so treat them like mushrooms by keeping them in the dark and feeding them s#it.

He comes off looking good making demands on Alberta and then bitching when Alberta doesn’t comply with his every wish.

CONTINUED But when Smith outlined a very rational reason why such a plan would hurt much of the Canadian population, not to mention its economy, Ford developed velcro lips and said nothing.

Nothing was spewed from the mouths of Nenshi or Lukaszuk either after Smith’s explanation.

Instead, Nenshi pivoted to whining about calling off the Oct. 19 referendum, another ridiculous comment since that voting date is now well beyond the point of no return.

Smith pointed out Line Five could be shut down by the U.S. and therefore stop oil shipments to Ontario via Michigan and on to Line Nine to Quebec.

Smith further pointed out if Alberta stopped shipping heavy crude to refineries along the gulf coast they would quickly look to newer markets to obtain crude stocks from.

She suggested Venezuela and it appears she was correct, since Trump has since announced a “great, new deal” for the U.S, to purchase huge oil reserves from that country.

Smith also pointed out the U.S. maintains strategic oil reserves, something Canada doesn’t. So if U.S. oil supplies start getting low, they can tap into those reserves.

Not Canada, as a long, cold winter looms.

“Make no mistake,” Smith said. “The United States has betrayed a sacred trust and friendship.”

She pointed out Canada had fought

alongside the U.S. in two world wars, sent firefighters in when wildfires raged through parts of the country.

“We have built one of the most integrated economies on earth and defended it well,” she said.

But the relationship between the American and Canadian people is stronger than any one president, she said.

“We need to be wise, patient and deliberate to wait out these threats Canada is facing,” she said, She added she was pleased with the moves Alberta had taken and Alberta would be doing similar programs to support local businesses.

She also said this was the time to explore new markets for Canadian products and to look at building the pipeline through Canada to the eastern markets.

Smith in a nutshell was arguing for Canada as well as Alberta.

She had her Elbows Up, offering a strong rationale for her decisions to not include tariffs or halt sales of Alberta oil and gas.

She also offered practical solutions of ways to move ahead during these turbulent times and find new markets and seize new opportunities for Canadian business to expand and grow in the world.

So Lukaszuk, Nenshi and other “progressives” who thrive on calling Smith a separatist or traitor.

Stop!!!!

She just made a statement indicating if nothing else she is very much pro-Canada and also may be one of our strongest and most practical Premiers.

FROM WHERE I SIT: Deserve that

BY HAZEL ANAKA When I was a young kid, perhaps nine years of age, I was admitted to a small local hospital that has since closed. As was common, back in the day, my tonsils were getting yanked out. That involved a hospital stay and ice cream as a sanctioned meal in the ‘nursery’ ward of the hospital. In what may be the modern-day equivalent of a BOGO (buy one, get one deal), I also had my adenoids removed.

I just checked the Cleveland Clinic website to see what role tonsils play and why they were considered so expendable decades ago. Today, the medical community reluctantly removes tonsils only after a defined number of episodes of tonsilitis within a year. Anyway, tonsils (filled with white blood cells and about the size of a marshmallow!) are part of the body’s immune

system and the first line of defence against germs entering the body through the mouth or nose. The adenoids play the same role especially in a child’s first five years of life. By adulthood they disappear. I can only guess that mine were inflamed or otherwise causing problems warranting their removal.

I really didn’t intend to do an ode to a tonsil but was trying to take us back to small hospitals of yesteryear. Tonsil

removal must have big business because there were at least three or four of us in the nursery at the same time.

And we were all terrified of one of the nurses. She was tall and large-boned. She may have been head nurse.

At that time, nurses were swathed in white from their starched caps to their sensible white leather oxfords.

White uniform dresses, white stockings, and either a wrist watch or watch brooch fastened

to their chests rounded out the look. A withering look from her had us scurrying back into the ward which consisted of a large single room with small cots and a crib.

Over the weekend, I had an extended look at a modern-day hospital and the personnel working within it.

There was not a white anything to be found.

In fact, there were no uniforms and precious few scrubs. Most employees seemed to be

wearing t-shirts, hoodies, yoga pants, colourful runners---athleisure at its finest. We were in the emergency department of a large area hospital. We were there for over eight hours, luckily most of that time spent in a cubicle rather than the waiting room. I won’t get into details of the visit. I had packed watercolour paper and a pencil case full of fine liners so I spent hours doodling.

could use the tray table as my art desk.

I understand the state of the healthcare system. I understand the concept of triage. I appreciated the level of seriousness and expertise they brought to this case. I appreciated the diagnostic tools they brought to bear on the problem. Frankly, their apparel seemed pretty inconsequential in the grand scheme of things.

Even in a big hospital, not all services are available on the weekend. Sunday morning, we returned for more treatment and an assessment by a nurse practitioner. On Monday, we’ll return for more treatment, an ultrasound, and hopefully a treatment plan.

What is the takeaway here? Do not delay getting medical care at the first sign of a problem.

Whiskey in a cask is the only thing that improves with age. Oh, sure, healing may occur if left unattended but it won’t be optimal and it may be disastrous. Or deadly. If your doctor seems, for whatever reason, incapable or unwilling to give you the care you deserve, move on quickly to someone who will. We all deserve at least that, from where I sit.

Adoption event in Lamont helps animals find families

A love of animals and a morning coffee routine came together Saturday as Soft Light Café in Lamont hosted the Coffee & Critters adoption event.

The Aug. 22 event, was organized in partnership with Prairie Paws and gave community members an opportunity to meet animals looking for their forever homes while enjoying a coffee.

The idea for an outdoor kitten café began somewhat unexpectedly. Cassandra Lundbek said she regularly visits the café in the mornings for coffee and had brought animals with her on a couple of occasions.

“I had animals with me and the staff started coming out to see them,” Lundbek said.

“Then me and Lindsay started talking about potentially doing an outdoor kitten cafe and it just kind of developed from there.” What started as casual conversations eventually turned into the adoption event, bringing animals and potential adopters together in a relaxed community setting.

The event was especially successful for two dogs, Nugget and Mocha, who had been waiting a long time for their chance at a permanent home. Both dogs were adopted.

For Lundbek, seeing the two dogs finally find families was particularly meaningful.

“They’ve been with us since they were little nuggets, eyes weren’t even open,” she said.

“They came down, I believe, November 2nd, so it’s a really big deal that they got adopted.”

The event also provided much-needed financial support for Prairie Paws. A total of $200 was raised toward the organization’s veterinary bills.

Two senior dogs that are currently in care with the organization, are also still looking for long-term homes. The

dogs require approximately $4,000 worth of dental surgery, and Prairie Paws is currently raising funds to help cover the cost of their medical care.

While Saturday’s event helped two dogs find homes, the work continues for the animals still waiting for their families. Organizers are also hoping to return to Soft Light Café for another Coffee & Critters event sometime in mid-September, weather permitting.

For the volunteers involved, the events are about more than simply finding homes for animals. They provide an opportunity to raise awareness, generate support for veterinary care and connect animals with people who may be able to give them the second chance they deserve.

Lamont County Emergency Services looking for new firefighters

Lamont County Emergency Services is once again looking for people ready to answer the call, with recruitment now underway at all five of its fire stations.

LCES is looking for paid-on-call firefighters in Andrew, Bruderheim, Chipman, Lamont and Mundare.

Unlike a traditional full-time firefighting position, paid-on-call firefighters are compensated for the emergency calls they attend as well as their required training.

Each station holds weekly training nights

on Tuesday evenings.

The commitment means being prepared to respond to emergencies at a moment's notice, whether it's a structure fire, vehicle collision, medical call or another type of emergency.

But the benefits extend well beyond responding to calls, says LCES. Firefighters receive training in a wide range of skills, including fire suppression, first aid, patient care, vehicle extrication, hazardous materials, search and rescue, emergency response and the safe use of specialized equip-

ment.

Lamont Town Council rundown for August

Lamont Town Council addressed a range of municipal and community matters during its regular meeting on Aug. 25, 2026, including financial updates, strategic planning, upcoming community events and advocacy efforts.

Council approved Mayor Foulds’ absence from the Aug. 25 and Sept. 8 council meetings due to personal reasons. Council also directed administration to submit an FCSS advocacy letter to the office of Alberta MLA Jackie ArmstrongHomeniuk on behalf of the mayor and council.

On the financial side, council approved the addition of unsightly costs and the transfer of amounts from accounts receivable to the appropriate tax roll.

Council also received updates on the Town’s 2026 tax revenue and capital budget, accepting both reports as information. The 2026 tax revenue update provided council with an overview of the municipality’s current revenue position, while the capital budget update outlined the status of planned capital projects and expenditures.

Council also approved the Strategic and Operational Planning schedule as pre-

sented, setting the framework for upcoming municipal planning discussions.

Community events were also on the agenda, with council receiving an update on the 2026 Party in the Park. Council accepted the update as information and expressed support for encouraging attendees to contribute a non-perishable food item or monetary donation to the local food bank. The donation initiative will provide an opportunity for residents attending Party in the Park to support local families and individuals who rely on food bank services.

Bruderheim council changes by-election date

BY JOHN MATHER At their regular Aug. 19 council meeting Bruderheim Town Council appointed councillor Arlie Young as the new Deputy Mayor taking over from Dayna Jacobs who had resigned her council seat.

The council also set Oct. 5 as the date for the by-election to replace Jacobs.

But then a special meeting was held Aug 24 to change the byelection date to Oct. 6.

Council also amended the close of nominations from Sept.

7 to Sept 8.

Catholic staff gather at Skaro Shrine for Opening Day Liturgy

BY JOHN MATHER More than 650 staff from Elk Island Catholic Separate School Division gathered Aug. 28 under bright, sunny skies for the 2026/27 Opening Day Liturgy at the Skaro Shrine.

In an email from Communications and Division Services Supervisor at Elk Island Catholic Separate School Division, Lisa Wispinski, said, “Each year before the school year begins, our entire division staff gathers for an Opening Day Mass.

“It's an opportunity to celebrate Mass together and connect

with each other, as we prepare for the upcoming school year.

“While the Opening Day Mass is an annual tradition, this year marked a special milestone as our very first time celebrating at the Skaro Shrine.”

She added a highlight for the gathered crowd was having Archbishop Stephen Hero celebrate mass alongside parish priests from the division’s school communities.

Moravian Church property has subdivision of property approved

BY JOHN MATHER At their regular Aug 19 meeting, Bruderheim Council received a report and moved to allow the subdivision of the property of the Board of Elders of the Canadian District of the Moravian Church in America.

Jane Dauphinee of Municipal Planning Services gave a report of the procedure to council.

The application was to subdivide the land around the old Moravian Church into three

parcels of land, two institutional and one agricultural parcel. The one institutional is the site of the church and is 2.84 acres, the second is the cemetery which is 2.09 acres and the third agricultural is 21.13 acres and is vacant.

The property is bordered by Highway 45 on its northern boundary and highway 45/ 48 St. on its western boundary.

The property has been appraised at $14,000 per acre.

Holowaychuk re-appointed as Elk Island School Board chair

BY JOHN MATHER Elk Island Public Schools Board of Trustees held their annual organizational meeting Aug. 27, and Lamont area trustee Colleen Holowaychuk was reappointed as the board chair.

Holowaychuk, first elected Oct. 2010, has served in a variety of capacities during her time on the board, serving as a EIPS Board vice-chair, Director and Zone 2/3 chair and vice-chair with the Alberta School Boards As-

sociation, “I’m proud to serve as board chair for a second year and I’m excited for another term with this great Board of Trustees,” says Chair Holowaychuk. “We’re just beginning the first year of our new fouryear plan that means there’s a lot of great work that we are eager to begin. Guided by our new vision, ‘Worldclass learning; lifelong impact,’ we will continue our commitment to providing high quality, student-centred ed-

ucation that equips every student with the skill, character and confidence to thrive beyond their time in school.”

Krista Scott, representing the area of Sherwood Park, south of Wye Road, was first elected to the board in Oct. 2025, was reappointed for her second term as vice chair of the board.

Prior to her election to the board she had served as a member of various EIPS school councils, the EIPS Com-

mittee of School Councils and on the Alberta School Councils' Association Board of Directors.

EIPS has a nine-member Board representing more than 17,750 students and their families in Sherwood Park, the City of Fort Saskatchewan, the Town of Vegreville, Strathcona County, Lamont County and the western portion of the County of Minburn.

Trustees meet as a Board and on committees on a regular basis.

Caution as bison rut begins at EINP

BY JOHN MATHER The annual bison rut has begun at Elk Island National Park and park officials have issued warnings for visitors to take care and not stray close to the animals.

“Late summer at Elk Island National Park brings one of the most spectacular wildlife events of the year, the bison rut or breeding season,” park officials stated in a release.

“This comes with the responsibility of visitors treating wildlife with the respect it de-

serves.

“During this time, Elk Island National Park comes alive with the deep bellows of bulls,” the release added. “Mature males are more alert, more aggressive, and far more likely to choose “fight” over “flight” as they compete for the attention of females.”

Although the bison look docile, they are dangerous and park visitors should give the animals more space at this time of year than they usually do.

“Normally, 100 meters is the minimum distance. During rut season, double it or even triple it. If you’re on foot, give them as much space as possible.”

Park officials suggest visitors stay in their vehicles when near roads that may have bison in the area.

Drivers are also instructed to slow down and obey the park posted speed limits especially around periods of sunrise or sunset.

Cyclists and motor-

cyclists should be extremely cautious and should never ride through a herd Wait for the bison to clear the road, turn around, or use a vehicle as a shield as a last resort.

The bison can move at speeds of up to 55 kph and weigh more than a tonne. To protect both yourself and the bison stay out of areas that are restricted or closed, add park officials.

Bruderheim Ag to host canoe trip on North Saskatchewan

BY JOHN MATHER Bruderheim’s Agricultural Society has decided it will mark David Thompson Day on Sept. 12, by hosting a river run canoe trip from the Fort Saskatchewan boat launch to the Vinca Bridge, a distance of 32 km.

In addition to the river run, there will be a variety of activities held at Bruderheim’s Walker

School. Tthere will be a storyteller speaking on the fur trade along the river, a portage obstacle course, a trading post scavenger hunt, bead bracelet making and Celtic knotwork crafts.

In addition there will be a fiddler, and bagpiper providing entertainment.

During the event there will also be hotdogs and hamburgers available along with

fresh bannock.

“So far we have about a dozen people lined up to come on the river run,” said Dan McCullough, a director with the Bruderheim Agricultural Society.

In the past they had done a Celtic Day and other events but this year they wanted to keep it closer to the Bruderheim region and he suggested the river run to commemorate

the exploits of David Thompson.

McCullough said participants in the river run will require a life jacket and other legal requirements such as a tow rope and signalling device.

“This is our first year doing this,” he said.

“And if it’s successful we may make it an annual event.”

Vegreville RCMP seek assistance identifying suspect vehicle in road rage collision On Aug. 28, 2026, at approximately 12:45 p.m., Vegreville RCMP responded to a report of a road rage incident, resulting in a collision on Range Road 152, north of Township Road 522.

A male suspect travelling in a black Dodge Ram pick-up truck sped past an SUV and slammed on the breaks causing a collision. The driver of the truck exited the vehicle and approached the SUV, breaking the driver side window with a crowbar.

The driver of the truck fled the scene, and police are asking for assistance in identifying the vehicle.

The police investigation remains ongoing.

EINP hosts Immersive Beaver, Bison and Métis Experience

The all-inclusive guided bus tour is designed for groups of up to 20 people took participants through Edmonton, Elk Island National Park and

The experience will begin at ÎNÎW Art Park in Edmonton, and from Edmonton, participants travelled to Elk Island National Park for a Bison Backstage Tour, providing a behind-thescenes look at bison conservation.

The tour will visited Plains Bison Handling Facility, where partici-

pants learned about the history of bison, their role in shaping the prairie landscape and the conservation work being carried out in the park.

Another highlight at Elk Island was Turning Deserts into Gardens: A Beaver Tale, a guided exploration of a beaver pond.

Toy Run this weekend in Lamont County

The roar of motorcycles, the shine of classic cars and the spirit of giving will come together Sept. 6 for the 3rd Annual Lamont County Toy Run and Show & Shine, organized

by Jodi Velthuizen, with registration at Lamont Arena 11 am to 1 pm.

The annual event brings riders, drivers and community members together for a day of fun while helping support the local Food Bank.

Everyone is welcome to participate — whether arriving on a motorcycle or in a vehicle. Entry to the Toy Run is by donation of either a new toy or cash.

At 1 p.m., participants will kick-

stands up and head out on a tour through Lamont County, travelling through Chipman, Mundare and Andrew before making their way back to Bruderheim.

The Toy Run isn’t just for motorcycle enthusiasts. The ride is open to anyone who wants to join in and support the cause. The afternoon continues in Bruderheim, with the Show & Shine running from 3 to 4 p.m.

Velthuizen says the event is about much more than motorcycles and cars. It is an opportunity for the community to come together, enjoy a day of activities and, most importantly, help make Christmas a little brighter for local families.

Andrew Garlic Festival looking for vendors

The annual festival will be held Saturday, October 10, at the Andrew Community Centre. The event brings together local residents and visitors for a day of food, entertainment, shopping and family activities.

A farmers market will be part of the festival. Organizers are encouraging anyone interested in having a table at the festival to get in touch and register.

Crosswalk a tribute to veterans

A new permanent tribute to Canada’s veterans now stands in Bruderheim, following the unveiling of the community’s Veterans Crossing on Sunday, Aug. 30.

The ceremony, held at the intersection of 51st Avenue and 49th Street, brought together numerous local veterans, residents, community members and dignitaries to recognize the sacrifices and service of those who have served Canada.

Among those in attendance was MLA for Fort Saskatchewan- Vegreville, Jackie Armstrong-Homeniuk, who joined local officials and veterans for the unveiling.

The Veterans Crosswalk initiative was spearheaded by Bruderheim Deputy Mayor Arlie Young, who wanted to establish a meaningful and

visible way for the community to recognize veterans throughout the year—not only on Remembrance Day. “Our vets deserve our respect,” Young said. “We wanted to create something that our town would see every day of the year and remind us to be grateful for the ultimate sacrifice so many of them made for the freedoms we enjoy today.”

The unveiling ceremony featured opening remarks from Mayor Ron Ewasiuk, Councillor Luis Diaz, who is also a veteran, and Deputy Mayor Young.

Veterans in attendance were given a special salute, accompanied by trumpet performances by Mike Kissack of the Fort Saskatchewan Community Band.

A special metal banner, made by Bruderheim resident Cole Kuzic, was also unveiled as part of the

project, symbolizing the purpose of the crosswalk and the community’s commitment to remembering those who have served.

For the local veterans gathered for the occasion, the crosswalk represents a lasting recognition of their service and the sacrifices made by generations of Canadian military personnel.

The Town of Bruderheim hopes the new crosswalk will become a daily reminder for residents to pause and reflect on the freedoms Canadians enjoy and the people who helped protect them.

With its prominent location in the community, the Veterans Crosswalk will serve as a permanent tribute to veterans—ensuring their service and sacrifice remain visible and remembered 365 days a year.
