2021 Daysland Grad Class ‘go where the stars take you’

Despite delays due to the pandemic, the Daysland School Class of 2021 finally got their day, in an outdoor graduation ceremony held this past Saturday, Sept. 25 in Gazebo Park in Daysland, under sunny autumn skies. Daysland School’s Class of 2021 finally got their grad, held in Gazebo Park in Daysland on Saturday, Sept. 25. Graduates chose a theme of “Go where the stars take you” for this year’s ceremony. Dane Davis and Larissa Mohler were the hosts for the event, starting with an introduction for all the graduates. Principal Wes Wilson gave the speech to the graduates, first acknowledging the trials this class has gone through due to the pandemic, and congratulating them on their achievements. Guest Speaker Mrs. Zimmer said she had the dubious honour of having this class in her first year of teaching, back in Grade 6. She talked about the concept of perseverance, and encouraged the graduates to continue to strive for what they wanted to do. Mrs. Wilson surprised the class with some envelopes from back in Grade 6, where she’d asked them three questions about where they wanted to be by Grade

12. Kailyn Horon spoke as the Class Representative on behalf of the grads, even taking time to apologize to Mrs. Zimmer for making her first year of teaching a challenge. Horon ended her speech by wishing her fellow graduates the best as they follow their paths. This graduation included the Grade 12 awards for 2021. Graduates were asked to stand as their names were announced as the winners, collecting their awards after the ceremony. The first award announced was Overall Honours, going to Kailyn Horon, Taryn Petiot, Makena Robbins, Emily Roth, Victoria Weber, and Kelsey Zimmer. The English 30-2 award, sponsored by Double Z Farms and Meat went to Lane Birkjar. The English 30-1 award, sponsored by Daysland Medical Centre was Kailyn Horon. The Social 30-2 award, sponsored by Vision Credit Union in Daysland, went to Kelsey Zimmer. The Social 30-1, sponsored by the

Daysland Medical Centre was given to Taryn Petiot. The Math 30-2 award, sponsored by Vision Credit Union in Daysland was given to Emily Roth. The Math 30-1 award, sponsored by Daysland Medical Centre went to Ethan Zimmer. The Biology 30 award, sponsored by the Daysland Dental Clinic, went to Kailyn Horon. The Physics 30 award, sponsored by Daysland Pharmacy, was given to Kailyn Horon. Top Grade 12 Academic award, sponsored by the Daysland Knights of Columbus, was presented to Taryn Petiot. The Top All-round Grade 12 student, sponsored by the Heisler Elks #305, was awarded to Kailyn Horon. The Senior High School CTS Industrial Education Award, sponsored by the Heisler Elks #305, was given to Ethan Zimmer. The Merit Contractor’s Association Career and Technology Studies Construction award, sponsored by Merit

Contractors, was presented to Ethan Zimmer. The Green Certificate Highest Standing Award, sponsored by Mike and April Terway of Terway Farms, was presented to Landon Omoth. The Kevin Carlson Memorial Award, sponsored by the Roy Carlson family, was presented to Kelsey Zimmer. The Grade 12 Student Leadership award, sponsored by Dayland School, was given to Taryn Petiot. The Scott Heisler Memorial Award, sponsored by the Scott Heisler family in coordination with the Battle River Community Foundation, was presented to Kailyn Horon. The Premier’s Citizenship Award, sponsored by the Provincial government, was presented to two graduates, Mitchell Mikla and Kiera Schlaut. The Governor General’s Academic Medal, sponsored by Governor General Mary May Simon, was presented to Taryn Petiot. After the ceremony was concluded, graduates danced with their escorts, then a final dance with their parent.
