Surprise nominations for upcoming municipal elections BY JOHN MATHER Across Lamont County, candidates seeking mayoral, or councillor seats in five municipalities and the County had to have their nomination sheets in by Monday, Sept. 20 at noon. All candidates had until 12 noon Tuesday to remain in the running for a seat. An interesting municipal election is shaping up in at least two municipalities in Lamont County come Oct. 18. In the town of Lamont, Councillor Kirk Perrin has given up his councillor’s seat in a bid to become mayor, taking on long-time Mayor Bill Skinner who is seeking another term. On the council side in Lamont, incumbent councillors Jody Foulds, Allen Harvey, Perry Koroluk, and Dave Taylor are seeking re-election. They will be challenged by newcomers Colleen Holowaychuk, Matthew Levicki, and Linda Sieker.

Holowaychuk also is the current Elk Island Public School Board trustee. Apparently because the two jurisdictions don’t overlap, Holowaychuk is allowed to run for both seats at the same time. In Bruderheim, a most interesting situation has arisen because while Mayor Karl Hauch has been acclaimed for another term, there aren’t enough councillors to fill the seats. Two councillors, Dan Skousbol and Pat Lee, have decided to call it quits, leaving two seats up for grabs in the upcoming election. Incumbent councillors George Campbell, Len Falardeau, Wayne Olechow, and Judy Schueler are all retaining their seats and newcomer Dayna Jacobs will also fill a seat. According to Chief Administrative Officer Patty Podoborozny nominations will be open for the last council

seat alone for six days until one or more nominations are received. Any nominations for that seat will be received between the hours of 10 a.m to 12 noon only during the six-day period. She added the mayor’s seat is already acclaimed and if more than one candidate puts their name forward for election then there would be one. If no one steps up to fill the seat, Podoborozny said Alberta Municipal Affairs would step in to help the town, but she wasn’t sure if a person would be appointed to fill the vacant council seat. In Lamont County, Neil Woitas has been acclaimed as the Councillor for Division Five, which is the western area of the county around the Bruderheim area. In Division One, incumbent Daniel Warawa will face off for the council seat against Kevin

Andrychuk. Division Two incumbent Wayne Woldanski will go up against Aaron Wick for the council seat in the area from Chipman to Elk Island Park and the populated acreage areas along Highway 16. In the central Division Three area which includes St. Michael, current Reeve David Diduck will have a former councillor Christopher Klita running against him. In the northeast Division Four which also takes in the Andrew area, incumbent councillor Roy Anaka will face off against Bonnie Lynn Fawcett. In Chipman, four candidates will battle it out for the village’s three council seats. Incumbents Graham Godlien and Morris Langevin are seeking another term and they are being challenged by newcomers Shana McIntyre and Trudy Smith. Continued on Page 10
