Honouring 9/11 firefighters Beginnings of Heroes in the Sky promotion in Lamont began with American tragedy KERRY ANDERSON "When I was at Indianapolis in training last year, I got to sit down with some actual 9/11 firefighters who survived the Twin Towers (World Trade Center terrorist disasters in New York City)," said Lamont Heroes in the Sky organizer Lt. Andrew McDonald. "When you're with those guys, you just listen - you don't speak. What are you going to add to the conversation when those guys are talking?" McDonald said one of the 9/11 firemen told him either coming down or going up he passed his own son who was a firefighter, and that was the last time he saw him. He was hit by some debris and was killed. "He told us," said McDonald, "that being a firefighter is so much about luck and inches." The Lamont fireman added, every firefighter understands that just being in the wrong place at the wrong time can be a matter of life or death. Honouring the heroes of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks which resulted in the destruction of two New York skyscrapers which were once the tallest buildings in the world, is what started the Lamont Heroes in the Sky day. "A lot of firefighters died that day trying to save people," he stated. "We used to camp out on top of a building in honour of the 9/11 firefighters who lost their lives on that day," said Lt. McDonald. Now the fire department in Lamont tries to just have a fun but educational day for the public. Saturday's Heroes in the Sky day was held at the Lamont County administration building, where the parking lot was large enough for the free barbecue, bouncy house, dunk tank, demonstrations and people - lots and lots of people. Lt. McDonald said traditionally one of the most popular and interesting events is the extrication demonstration, and the Bruderheim Fire Department once again handled those chores for the Lamont Department. "They took a mini van and turned it into a convertible," said McDonald. "We're busy with barbecuing and other jobs so it is really nice of them to come out and do it for us." As well there was a bouncy house for the kids, a
dunk tank featuring firemen, teachers and even a councillor. "We never have any expectation for raising money," he stated, as the entire day is free of charge to the public. "We just ask for donations." Any funds raised goes toward the Lamont Fire
Department equipment fund and also advanced training. "People told us we could never make any money doing it this way, but people are so generous that we do tend to make some money afterall."

Opinion Alberta must be the healthiest province unless employers are being cheated Albertans seem to be the healthiest of all Canadians. Assuming, of course, that employees in Canada are taking "sick and disabled" days off for a very good reason. Of course we all know that nobody would selfishly just take time off for their own personal benefit (wink, wink). After all that would be cheating employers. Most salubrious, it would appear, are people employed by the private sector. They must work in a much healthier environment than government workers, because the difference in "sick or disabled" days is really quite staggering from coast to coast. According to statistics compiled by the Canadian Taxpayers Federation, Federal government employees take their legitimate time off each year, but in addition also on average take another 12.9 "sick or disabled" days off per year. Provincial employees across Canada must be just slightly healthier, as they "only" take an additional 11.7 "sick or disabled" days off annually in addition to their permissible off days. Now compare that to private sector employees, who find their health much better than the two government groups, averaging only 8.9 "sick or disabled" days off per year in Canada. Generally speaking, Canadians have it pretty good. We only work 65.2 percent of the days of the year (or 238 of 365). A worker with five years experience with a company will receive at least 15 work days off for vacation, 105 for weekends, and nine for public holidays. Considering what work days are left, Federal government workers get so sick that they have to take almost five percent of those remaining days off. Cough, cough... I am happy to say that; be it the mountain air, the prairie fields, or the petroleum reserves, Alberta's government workers get sick or disabled almost half as much as the average of the remaining provinces. Government workers in Alberta only take 8.5 "sick or disability" days off annually - and without their efforts to make it to work, the Canadian average is driven up even further. However comparatively "healthy" Alberta government workers are, their "sick or disability" time off is still extremely high compared to Alberta's healthy-living private sector employees, who only take off on average 5.1 days per year. By Hazel Anaka Because of a previous stay, I had a gift certificate for the Best Western Hotel & Casino Resort in Camrose burning a proverbial hole in my hot, little hands. It offered an attractive rate for two nights and the expiry date was quickly approaching. Festival work (and my perhaps irrational commitment) precludes any real summer holiday until Babas & Borshch is successfully over. On a normal year, there is usually only a few days of recovery
time before we’re in the thick of harvest and I’m behind the controls of one of our John Deere combines. We all know this isn’t a normal year. So, booking a two-day solo getaway to beautiful downtown Camrose seemed like a nice reward for surviving festival number five. On my arrival day, I checked out some shops before checking in. I was pleased to see that Best Western now offers a DVD player and access to dozens of movies for in-room viewing. So even though I packed a laptop, a book and journal, and a well-laid plan for what I’d accomplish, I was hopeless. I could do nothing more than eat when it was time to eat, sleep when it was time to sleep, and zone completely out the rest of the time. I did wander over to the casino one evening. Though I’m the polar opposite of a com-
pulsive gambler, I stopped to talk to the guy at the info desk. He told me the machines are computers and the numbers are randomly generated. You can plug a machine with money and spend hours at it confident that eventually, eventually your turn will come. Sorry, love, it ain’t so. Hence the word, random. There aren’t any hot machines either. Let’s just say I contributed to the local economy and got that dream out of my system. It was nice to linger over the comp hot breakfast buffet and read the Edmonton Journal from cover to cover. It was nice not to have to do anything but be. I could be disappointed that I didn’t accomplish anything but sometimes that’s what just being looks like. Plus I was exhausted. So I binge-watched movies and wondered if I’d ever feel anything

Because it’s not something that comes naturally to me, it was all the more valuable, from where I sit.

Terry Fox Run this Sunday at Lamont Keep Terry's memory alive at great family event, says organizer Curt Malica By KERRY ANDERSON For nearly 30 years now the Knights of Columbus has been hosting a Terry Fox Run in Lamont, raising nearly $250,000 to go towards cancer research. The community service organization will be hosting this year's event on Sunday and at a different location but promising all the family fun of years gone by. "We've changed locations from the Rec. Centre to the Hillside Park picnic area," said organizer Curt Malica. "If you can't run 10 km, come out for a nice family walk. It's really quite enjoyable." Malica said people can walk, bike or run anywhere from two km to 10 km. "Last year we raised around $10,000 mostly in pledges from participants and donations from the community. You can go online to the Terry Fox Foundation and raise money with pledge forms or just come out and make a small donation." He added that there will be a free BBQ for participants and lots of door prizes to be handed out. "It's a nice family get-together and it is going to a wonderful cause." Malica said the Knights of Columbus Star Council, which has roughly 75-80 active and non-active members from the Lamont County area, started up the local Terry Fox Run in the late 1980s. This is his second round of organizing the event, as he finished a 10-year term in 2008. "Other guys took it over throughout the years, but I took the reigns again this year," said Malica, who added that it was a pleasure to keep the memory of Terry Fox alive in Lamont County. "You don't have to be a great athlete like Terry Fox to participate though," he reiterated. "Everyone can participate and it can be a really nice family day for a
good cause. "All the donations go to the Terry Fox Foundation, and it is giving to a wonderful cause. All the money goes to cancer research. It isn't like a lot of charities where there is a lot of administration expenses. "Everyone knows someone who has had cancer. It's a disease where we have made advancements but we haven't been able to conquer. Any donation, large or small is appreciated." Terry Fox (July 28, 1958 – June 28), was a Canadian athlete, humanitarian, and cancer research activist. After losing a leg after a battle with cancer, Fox embarked on an east to west cross-Canada run to raise money and awareness for cancer research called the Marathon of Hope. During his historic fundraising run he averaged running on one leg nearly a full marahon every day, covering 5,373 km in 143 days before his Marathon of Hope was cut short by the cancer which had spread to his lungs. The disease cost him his life, but also began a world-wide legacy. The annual Terry Fox Run, first held in 1981, has grown to involve millions of participants in over 60 countries and is now the world's largest one-day fundraiser for cancer research; over C$650 million has been raised in his name.

KERRY ANDERSON As Lamont County's municipal councillors in all towns and villages undergo their final council meetings in the near future, those interested in running for their elected positions for the upcoming four year term are set to put in their nomination papers on Sept. 18 between 10 am 12 noon. Here are some of the regulations before deciding to run for municipal office: • Must be 18 years of age on Nomination Day. • Canadian citizen. • Resident for six continuous months prior to Nomination Day. • Must not be auditor of the municipality. • Must not owe the municipality more than $50 in taxes. • Must not be in dept to the municipality by

Wife, son, charged with murder south of Holden On September 6, 2011, 49-year-old Miles Naslund was reported to police as missing from his rural home south of Holden after he did not return from his work as a farmer, however, after several years of investigation two men and one woman have been arrested and charged in connection with Mr. Naslund’s disappearance and death. Originally a missing person file, the ensuing investigation by the RCMP evolved into a homicide case and involved resources and assets from the Tofield and Camrose RCMP Detachments, the RCMP’s Major Crimes Unit (MCU) and its Forensic Identification

Helen Naslund (52), Miles Naslund’s wife, and Neil Naslund (25), Mr. Naslund’s son, have each been charged with first degree murder and indignity to human remains. Both have been remanded into custody until Thursday, October 26, 2017, when they are scheduled to appear in Fort Saskatchewan Provincial Court. Wes Naslund (32), Mr. Naslund’s son, was
charged with one count of accessory after the fact to murder and was remanded into custody until September 13, 2017 when he is to appear in Queen’s Bench Court in Edmonton. Given that charges have been sworn and the case is now before the court, additional information will not be provided by the RCMP at this time, however, should there be any new developments in this matter an updated media release will be disseminated.

Regional fire training centre impressive work in progress Michelle Pinon Editor Even though the regional fire training centre near Chipman is still a work in progress, members of Lamont County council officially toured the facility on Tuesday, August 22. Lamont County Regional Fire Chief Dave Zayonce, along with Deputy Fire Chiefs Al Klassen and Shayne Milliken, lead members of council as well as several local firefighters on the afternoon tour. “It’s still a work in progress; but the weather hasn’t been co-operating,” stated Zayonce, as this was the first time all summer that most of the site had been dry enough to do some grading and gravelling work. Electrical work is continuing on the second floor of the three storey structure, and eventually there will be propane tanks on site as well as water storage tanks. There is also a dug out on site for a steady water supply. Power was also expected to be installed. There will be a live fire and simulated fire modules, and two industrial smoke machines. There are built in anchor points to accommodate high angle rescue procedures. Klassen said they will be able to conduct search and rescue training exercises, live shooter training, etc. The computer simulator has a laser hose with automatic and manual settings that will allow firefighters to customize the variable conditions. There is also the option to have heat installed in the facility with classroom training a definite possibility down the road. Zayonce said they have received a lot of advice and feedback from other fire departments as well as industrial companies to further refine the facility which is comprised of 12 sea cans. “NRCAER (Northeast Region Community Awareness Emergency Response) toured two weeks ago and they were quite impressed.” The state-of-the-art fire training facility is “starting to get a lot of interest,” noted Zayone, who expects local volunteer firefighters, police, and emergency response professionals alike to take advantage of everything it offers. Lamont County Reeve Wayne Woldanski said having this type of facility in Alberta’s Industrial Heartland is a great thing to have, and has loads of potential for the future. “It is unique to this area,” added Woldanski, who says it’s also a major plus to be able to offer “year round training” for the various user groups. “It has tons of potential for sure,” said Bruderheim District Fire Chief Dave Calder. Lamont County Chief Administrative Officer Robyn Singleton commented, “It’s impressive. It’s got lots of potential and will improve the training for all of our fire departments.” Singleton said there is a good plan in place for utilization of the facility, and is excited about its future. Woldanski said he thought the young firefighters will benefit the most. “It’s a great opportunity for these people.” He added that Lamont County is very fortunate to have Dave Zayonce, Al Klassen and Shayne Milliken to lead the organization. Having their skills, expertise and experience, Woldanski said is a great advantage as well, and will provide more cost savings in regards to training. As well, being able to train firefighters locally allows them to return home nightly as opposed to travelling out of the region and having to stay in hotels. “It’s going to take our departments to a new level.” Woldanski said they have also been fortunate to receive donations from local industry. Having various user groups will also allow the county to offset
operating costs, as well as set aside funds for future upgrades.

Grand Opening for Bruderheim Pharmacy By MICHELLE PINON “I’m very thankful he brought the pharmacy to Bruderheim,” stated Mayor Karl Hauch, who sees the business as a “building block for our community.” The Town of Bruderheim is also partnering with the business to establish a medical clinic in the new Queen Street facility. Patty Podoborozny, Chief Administrative Officer for the Town of Bruderheim, explained they are in the process of preparing the space for medical professionals. During a walk through she said there will be a waiting area, consultation room, examination room, physician’s office, and nursing station. “We wanted to make it a cozy and welcoming space,” said Podoborozny. In addition, the Heartland Primary Care Network, will also be providing various services in the near future. She also pointed out that the pharmacist is working on his medical direction that will enhance the other services they will be offering down the line. “Our walk in clinic was successful,” noted Podoborozny, and they will be building on that success. She is

Fleming, one of six RPAP consultants throughout the province, said the organization has been in existence for the past 25 years, with the focus on teaching medical skills and providing
opportunities to physicians. RPAP’s mandate is to support Alberta’s rural practitioners, their families and communities in improving the quality of rural health care by offering comprehensive, integrated initiatives to enhance rural medical services, education, attraction, recruitment and retention.

NDP’s $54 million spending spree scrutinized Alberta’s UCP Caucus was hard at work holding government to task for its spending this week by scrutinizing the NDP government’s $54 billion spending spree and its $11 billion deficit. The UCP team used the two-day meeting of the Legislature’s Public Accounts Committee to expose the NDP’s gross mismanagement of Alberta’s finances, including the mess they made out of our energy system. We were unsurprised to discover that the government has failed to learn from the Power Purchasing Arrangement (PPA) debacle of their own creation, which will cost Albertans at least $4.5 billion. That’s simply not going to make life better for Albertans. That isn’t the only way they’ve dropped the ball on the energy file. Their accelerated shut down of coal with no plan for Alberta’s coal communities will hurt everyday Albertans in communities from Hanna to Forestburg and beyond. When Alberta’s Auditor General asked MLAs at the meeting for suggestions for improvements, all of our UCP MLAs asked for ways for the government to provide better value for tax dollars. Not a single
NDP MLA said efficient use of tax dollars was important to them, even though Alberta’s $1.4 billion annual interest payment is larger than the budgets for Agriculture and Forestry, Children’s Services, Economic Development and Trade, and almost a dozen other departments. It’s a huge problem that when debt servicing costs make up this large of a portion of the budget, the NDP backbenchers don’t even blink an eye. UCP Caucus MLAs Prasad Panda and Ric McIver demanded a debt repayment plan from this government to prevent our credit rating from slipping further, and our interest rates
from rising. On Thursday, our questioning revealed that officials with Alberta Health, our province’s biggest expense at $21 billion per year, could not clearly explain why our health spending keeps increasing without corresponding improvements in results. The Auditor General pointed out that “other countries are improving much faster and with less money.” True accountability means getting real answers not just for us, but for Albertans who depend on us to expose the NDP’s wasteful agenda. Dreams really do take flight. That was in plain view over the Chipman area in late August when a small group of hand picked junior pilots participated in a unique development camp. Jason Acker, Chief Flying Instructor with the Edmonton Soaring Club, said it was seventh time the non-profit organization has hosted the Western Canadian Junior Pilot Development Camp. Acker said the development camp is partly sponsored through the Soaring Association of Canada in conjunction with the Alberta Soaring Council and the Edmonton Soaring Club. Every summer the club is able to host up to 10 participants at the camp, and usually half of the
trainees are new and half are returnees. Andrew pharmacy robbed twice Two Hills RCMP are requesting the public's assistance regarding two break and enters that have recently occurred. On Aug. 18, 2017, at approximately 4:00 a.m., police responded to a break and enter at a store in Andrew, Alberta. It is believed several suspects smashed the front window and entered the store. Once inside they proceeded to the Pharmacy area and stole approximately $50,000 worth of prescription medication. None of the medication reported stolen were prescription narcotics. The suspects then fled the area in a dark truck. The suspect truck was located abandoned the same day on the Saddle Lake First Nations and was previously reported stolen out of Andrew, Alberta. Some of the medication that was stolen was recovered. On Sept. 6, 2017 between midnight and
8:00 a.m., another break and enter occurred at the same store. The suspects entered into the building by cutting a hole in the wall and proceeded to steal approximately $1,400 worth of medication and an undisclosed amount of money and cheques. The medications that were taken by the suspects during the second break and enter are considered dangerous if not prescribed by a physician and are listed as narcotics under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act. Some of the narcotics stolen include: Codeine, Fentanyl patches (13),
Morphine (150 pills), Oxycodone (490 pills). “The prescription medications that were stolen could cause serious harm to any person,” says Sergeant Michael Magee, NCO Two Hills RCMP Detachment, “We hope someone out there will have further information about these crimes due to the dangers the medications possess." Harvest of the Past at Ukrainian Village KERRY ANDERSON A huge crowd withstood the windy weather on Sunday, at the Ukrainian Cultural Heritage Village south of Lamont on Highway 16, enjoying its Harvest of the Past promotion. All the original and restored buildings and residences were open for viewing with in-character hostesses and hosts adding to the enlightening experience. There were games for the children, and Ukrainian recipies being demonstrated and tasted by visitors. The young marvelled at the displays, while the elderly were clearly touched while reminescing, seeing and touching memories of their youth brought back to life.
The day kicked off with a pancake breakfast, while musicians kept the excitement going at different locations at the village.
Exhibitors rounded out the activities of the day, selling and showing their wears in a fine day where there was really something for everyone.
Hilliard Hotel had a special in their restaurant during the Harvest of the Past celebrations at the Ukrainian Cultural Heritage Village on Sunday. The hotel was authentically open to specators during the day.
