BY JANA SEMENIUK In advance of Halloween, the Lamont Light Up Committee met Oct. 17 to begin setting up their many Christmas displays near the Lamont Town Office.

Vice Chair Gary Harrold said the work is done by a volunteer committee which will meet every Sunday to work on the display until the official opening at the end of Nov. “There are literally thousands of lights, about 25 trees, and many blow up and stand alone displays that need to be repaired, plugged in and set up,” he said. “All of this work is done by volunteers.”

While the town of Lamont absorbs the cost of electricity for the display, Harrold said the committee has slowly been moving to more energy-efficient lights.

“We’ve gradually been replacing strings of lights with LED,” he said.

Harrold added that most of the decorations and trees have been donated, and the oldest decoration they have is a set of wooden reindeer.

“This set of wooden reindeer we have is from the 50s or 60s and we’ve been putting it out for as long as I can remember.

I’m not sure who donated it,” he said.

Two seriously injured in Bruderheim area crash

Fog likely the cause of another accident involving two trucks

BY JOHN MATHER Four people were injured, two seriously, in a two car collision at the corner of Highway 45 and Highway 15, Oct. 22.

Bruderheim Fire Department rolled on the accident after the call came in at 4:30 p.m., said Lamont County Regional Fire Chief Shayne Milliken.

“Two people were transported to the city while the other two were transported to the Fort Saskatchewan Hospital,” said Milliken.

“They didn’t have to be extricated from the vehicles using any major equipment.”

He said the accident happened during a very busy time of day and the department did more traffic control than anything else.

Fort Saskatchewan RCMP responded to the call as well as Bruderheim Fire Department.

According to Lamont County Peace Officer Derek Wright, an eastbound vehicle was attempting to turn from Highway 15 on to Highway 45 when it was struck by an oncoming vehicle.

Meanwhile on Oct. 18, emergency departments from Andrew, Mundare, Hairy Hill and Willingdon responded to

an accident on Hwy 45 between Rge. Rd. 155 and Rge Rd. 154 between a tractor trailer and a zoom boom construction vehicle.

Both were travelling in the same direction when they collided in foggy conditions.

The driver of the larger truck was transported to Vegreville Hospital where he is reported to

be in good condition.

The driver of the zoom boom was extricat-

ed and was flown by STARS to Edmonton where he is reported to

be in good condition.

Two Hills RCMP also attended the scene.

Opinion What was the new mayorelect of Calgary thinking?

BY JOHN MATHER I expect we’ll be using this phrase much more in the next four years.

“Jyoti, Jyoti, Jyoti…. what were you thinking?

The new mayor-elect of Calgary Jyoti Gondeck isn’t even sworn in yet, but she’s already alienating the residents of that city.

Speaking on the Ryan Jesperson podcast, the ballots weren’t even dry when she said her first order of business will be to declare a “climate emergency”.

“We had the opportunity to do this for years, so let’s get serious,” she stated.

She added they would have to start making plans on how to allocate the “capital that will flow in after we make a bold move like that.”

I guess she expects it will blow in on all those windmills flapping in the greater Calgary area.

Former Saskatchewan Premier Brad Wall later weighed in on Gondek’s ridiculous comments by stating in the National Post that maybe Calgary’s oil and gas headquartered companies should “move past” Calgary and look for more welcoming cities.

Don’t be surprised of that happens.

Several head offices have moved out of Calgary and other parts of the province since Trudeau Junior got into office in Ottawa, and brought in bills which essentially kill the development and movement of oil and gas out of Alberta.

If we look at the surge in world demand currently taking place, especially in Europe, we can only shake our heads. When you know if the feds had left well enough alone and let a couple of pipelines get constructed, who knows where this colony’s oil and gas industry would be on the world stage right now!

But no, Trudeau’s policies have all but stifled development.

Yet, his government bleats when the precious Line 5 through Michigan is threatened because it would have drastic impacts on voter-rich southern Ontario and Quebec if it is shut down.

And I believe the Michigan governor will hold the upper hand in this dispute.

CONTINUED With this uncertain future, a newly elected Calgary mayor wades in with such a stupid statement.

While at some point we may gradually transition away from oil and gas production - and the key word here is gradually - why poke the sleeping bear with a stick.

Oil and gas is used in the production of so many household goods.

Is Jyoti going to lead by example and drive an electric car. How is she heating her home this winter?

If you’re going to make these silly pronouncements, then you

had better have the wherewithal to show leadership by casting your old ways out.

And of this money that will come flowing into the city…. where is it coming from?

Wind-power has not been shown to be economical. Solar power uses plastic panels and plastics comes from… you guessed it, oil and gas.

Where are these green industries now?

Are they leaving where they are and striding into Calgary on a new great white horse?

Where they are now is in a basement or university lab and for the foreseeable future that’s where they are going to

stay.

Yes, there is technology to produce energy from wind and solar, but not on a worldwide scale. And with electric cars you’ll need much more electricity generated for recharging those vehicles. Will windmills and solar panels provide that? Not yet.

We still need oil and gas. And since the Alberta oil and gas industry is the most environmentally friendly in the world we should proudly promote it - not kick it while it’s down.

Especially when you are the mayor of a city built on the oil and gas industry.

FROM WHERE I SIT: Over and Out

BY HAZEL ANAKA Have your shopping habits returned to the good old days of the preCOVID era? My own have gone through a series of ups and downs depending on what was going on in the moment.

The other day, for the very first time in nearly two years, I meandered seemingly without purpose through Marshall’s.

I’d been next door at Health Care Solutions to pick up a special order.

My large moist heating pad had given up the ghost several weeks earlier and my aching back was lost without it.

When I initially went in to replace it, a staff member clued me in about the last-Thursday-of-themonth senior’s twenty percent discount. With a regular price tag of $125, I was willing to wait and returned the following week only to find the store crowded and that shelf empty. Luckily, they would honour the sale price when stock came in. That’s why I was in Edmonton.

What made me think of Christmas shopping? I have the comfort and protection of being a double-vaxxer.

I’ve heard the scary predictions of stock shortages because of supply chain problems. I’ve seen empty store shelves. The weather and roads are still good. I’m not an

online shopper as a rule.

I had time and money.

So, I meandered around Marshall’s. I walked up and down nearly every aisle. I picked up and replaced many items as I talked myself out of buying umpteen things. I did buy Gertie a couple Christmas presents and found a 100% linen top for myself on sale. I scored some incredible rolls of giftwrap that will become bookmaking fodder.

From there I went to Indigo. Getting lost while browsing a book store is a nearly-forgotten treat. Regular readers of this space know I love Julia Cameron and her belief that we each need to rejuvenate our creativity through what she calls weekly artist dates; solo trips to places that feed our senses. Again, I meandered. I was able to buy a Christmas present there even after finding out my Plum Rewards had expired two days earlier. Makes me fear that service charges on a Southgate gift card have eaten up the entire balance. Haven’t been there since before COVID. A Wendy’s salad eaten in the car was a late lunch. Remember when people were scolded for going through a drive thru instead of walking in. Eating in your car was also deemed a sin. Now, it’s another way to stay COVID safe.

Finally, I stopped in at Fabricland. Before I know it, that membership will expire too with very little to show for it.

A visual and tactile feast is in store for anyone

spending time among the bolts of fabric, lace, trims. I bought small quantities of special fabric on sale: a vibrant one called poppy field for the Ukrainian in me and another replicating a vintage newspaper with old-timey ads. I was surprised but pleased to find a packet of tiny but mighty clips that apparently quilters use. It was one of those products I’d seen crafters use on YouTube but believed wasn’t available in Canada. I do keep a running list of things I want to search for if we ever go south to see the kids.

You see, I’m too cheap to pay outrageous shipping costs and on principle, don’t want to enrich Jeff Bezos (Amazon founder).

By then, I was ready to go home. At this time of year, it’s damn near impossible to dress right.

You need a winter coat in the morning and air conditioning by afternoon.

And of course, it’s always a relief to get the damn mask off.

Marathon recreational shopping is no longer the thrill it once was.

One habit I need to pick back up is keeping a close eye on my calendar.

For almost two years, it was month after month of nothing to schedule.

Today, when I checked the time of my first COVID era in-person appointment with my doctor, I discovered we had Citadel tickets for later in the day. Eek. I’ve enjoyed the ease and convenience of telephone consultations with my GP but appar-

ently actually touching a body is still required sometimes. Go figure.

As I wind this up, I want to mention something funny/interesting I read that has absolutely nothing to do with shopping. In Germany, scientists were able to pottytrain calves. Eleven out of sixteen calves were taught to use the MooLoo in just fifteen training sessions.

Incidentally, that is comparable to the time it takes to toilet train three to four-year old children.

The calves were given a

sweet treat if they urinated in a special pen in the barn. If they peed outside the area, they got a short burst of water as punishment. Apparently, there’s a wide-spread notion that cows are placid and lovable but perhaps not that bright.

Hah. Within a couple urinations, most of the calves were walking down the alley, pushing open the door, and going into the toilet.

Before you assume that more scientists got more bucks to study more stupid stuff, know

The burping, peeing, and pooping of the estimated 1.4 billion cows on the planet is hurting the earth. In Europe, where talk of forced reduction of livestock numbers is real, any attempt to find alternate ways to reduce the harm that waste is causing waterways and the atmosphere could get traction. Collecting urine is another strategy. A poop experiment may be next.

Food Bank board chair retires, group seeking replacement

BY JANA SEMENIUK The County of Lamont Food Bank will be seeking another board chair as Colette McBride has retired from her position.

McBride, who has been with the food bank since 2017, said she will miss the organization.

“In about a month I should be getting up on Thursdays to get to the food bank,” she said.

“Thursdays will be a bit lonely for a while.”

Chief Don McBride, retired on Oct. 15 thus prompting her decision.

The couple have decided to relocate.

“We’re in the process of moving,” she said.

“For now, the vice chair has stepped up to the chair position until the elections are held.”

The County of Lamont Food Bank will have elections in the spring during their Annual General Meeting to decide on a new board chair.

County firefighters get specialized extraction training

BY JOHN MATHER Firefighters from across Lamont County all took part in a two-day course on extrication of injured persons from agricultural machinery and buses on Oct. 23 and 24.

The program was put on at Aldon Auto’s salvage yard near Lamont by instructors from the Alberta Vehicle Extraction Association, said Lt. Dan Bowman of the Lamont Fire Department.

“It was sponsored by the Friends of the Lamont Fire Society and Lamont County,” he said. “The Heroes in the Sky fundraiser we held earlier this fall paid for a large part of the course.”

The 22 firefighters taking part in the program received about 25 per cent of the course in classroom instruction and 75 per cent of the

course in practical work at the salvage yard.

“The course taught us about school bus rescue,” explained Bowman. “It was fairly straightforward getting people out of school buses after it had been in an accident.

“On the farm equipment side of it we had three combines donated by local farmers that we worked on.”

He said the firefighters learned how to get people free if they got caught in chains or in the header. In addition, if a person was trapped in the hopper while cleaning it they would be rescued.

There was also an auger that the students learned how to extricate a person if they were trapped.

Bowman said while there had been some agricultural equipment fires across the county

this past summer, the course concentrated on extraction techniques rather than dealing with any fire components.

Bowman said a lot of those accidents with agricultural equipment can be caused by the farmer just not following proper procedures.

“They could be cleaning dirt off a windshield or trying to unclog a jam and they turned off the equipment but it might not have stopped rotating yet. Or they may loosen a jam and a spring or chain suddenly tightens after being freed and traps a leg or arm.”

He states if two people are working together they must take care to ensure they are directly communicating with each other so they are aware of what each other is doing.

Bowman adds the best thing to do is to make sure the machine is entirely shut down and locked out before trying to work on it.

Bowman stated the first day was much more challenging for the firefighters because of the wet, chilly fall weather.

“It was a difficult day and everyone was soaked and covered in mud,” he said. “But the reality is we can’t predict when an accident will happen. We may as well train in those conditions so we’re ready for them if we’re called out.”

Bowman added the

course was very important for the department county-wide.

“It’s not something that will happen often, but we must be ready for it. Repairs that have happened over the years on the agricultural equipment are different so we have to be ready for anything.”

Bowman further added the tools used are the same as the ones used in car or truck rescue so knowing how to put them to good use in different situations is a practical thing for the firefighters to know.

“With vehicles you don’t see a lot on the road that are more than 25 years old, but you go onto farms and you can see equipment that’s 30 to 40 years old and is still used every day.”

He further added buses are pretty standard, but with some of

the newer farm equipment there are a lot of things the firefighters have to be prepared for.

“There are springs and chains that store a lot of energy… there’s electrical components. If you start cutting things they could release a lot of energy that could hurt you. We got a lot of experience dealing with that this weekend.

“Pretty much everything we did over the weekend we tried to find different ways to do the same things so we could be prepared no matter what we’re facing.”

“Every piece of equipment has some place where people could get entangled,” Bowman adds. “You can never become complacent. You have to be vigilant with all the equipment you use.”

Alberta relies on the Wildfire smoke causes success of small business spike in air quality As the weather starts to get colder I want to reinforce some of the positive news we are seeing in our riding, and the province.

We are starting to get the fourth wave under control thanks to our government implementing a restriction exemptions program. Our government realizes not every municipality or county is the same.

Municipalities have always wanted and received autonomy from the provincial government. This is why we have given municipal governments options when implementing programs and making decisions regarding municipally owned facilities.

Our government has also succeeded in bringing back virtually all jobs lost due to the pandemic.

If you want more evidence that the Alberta Recovery Plan is working, all you need to do is take a look at the major investments announced in the heartland.

Dow Chemicals, Imperial Oil, and Air Products are just a few of the companies investing in our province. The price of oil continues to rise, so it’s obvious there is a demand for our energy. We have a lot of work to do, but we are committed to a full economic rebound.

I would like to congratulate all the mayors, reeves, councillors and trustees who were elected October 18. I look forward to working with all of you over your terms. I have much appreciation for the work our elected

BY JOHN MATHER Air quality across the region as reported by the Fort Air Partnership in the third quarter was actually a bit better in 2020 than in 2021.

In a release put out by the Partnership, there were 1,163 hours of moderate risk in this quarter, 246 hours of high risk and 84 hours of very high risk.

These results were almost entirely a result of wildfire smoke entering the Airshed from surrounding provinces, stated the release.

Only 11 hours (3.3 per cent) of the high or very high AQHI hours were

due to causes other than wildfire smoke.

The air monitoring stations at Elk Island, Fort Saskatchewan, and Redwater recorded the most hours of high or very high AQHI results due to the wildfire smoke, while Gibbons recorded the least.

Local residents can check the forecast and daily AQHI at fortair.org. The website also has a live data feed for a variety of substances that FAP measures, as well as weekly, quarterly and annual AQHI results.

Popular Chipman farrier competitions a confidence builder

BY JOHN MATHER For the third time in a year and a half, Chipman hosted a successful farrier competition, attracting competitors from across Western Canada.

The Coyote Country Classic presents a Hot October Match Play was held Oct. 23, with 26 competitors taking part.

Eleven competitors were women with the rest men competing in three divisions.

“We had competitors from Saskatchewan, B.C. and Alberta,” said organizer Jessie Robinson. “It’s the third competition we’ve held here in a year and a half.”

Robinson, a local farrier from Lamont County explains the popularity of events at the Chipman

Agricultural Grounds as being a good supply of swag bags for competitors, good prizes and the offer of free snacks, lunch and dinner.

“I try to do the best I can for the competitors and make them feel like athletes,” said Robinson.

“We run a pretty tight ship with the events,” he added. “We keep things moving. Yet when we hold an event the entries fill up within a couple of weeks.”

He said the three divisions run from entry level at division one to advanced farriers competing in division three.

He said the competition is set up as a match play with a two round knock out competition.

“Players go head to

head against each other,” Robinson explained. “At the start of the competition judges provide the specifications and a pattern for the shoe.

“Competitors can draw it, look at it, photograph it and then they have to build the specimen shoe the judge wants you to build. And you’re going head to head against another farrier.”

Winners stay in the A pool and the losers drop down to a B pool. As the competition comes to a conclusion the A pool winner takes on the B pool winner and the B pool winner would have to defeat the A pool winner twice to win overall.

He said it give the competitors an immense amount of confidence and lets competitors know what each one of them can do.

“It really opens your eyes to what’s possible.”

By the time the dust had settled and the clanging of hammer striking molten metals had stopped ringing peoples ears, the Division one winner was Renee Kalkman from Fort St. John, B.C. Second place in Division one was Allan McGhee from Onoway, Alta. Third place in Division one was Jayde Hudson from Saskatoon.

In Division Two the first place went to Matt Roberson from Dawson Creek, B.C.; second place was Bethany Raymer, from Sherwood Park; and third place went to Branden Augier, from Wainwright..

In Division three first place went to Jason Wrubleski, from Sherwood Park; second place was won by Russ Floyd from Prince George, B.C. and third place went to Keith Oram from Strathmore.

Lamont and Bruderheim were both scheduled for U9 games over the weekend but no scores were posted a press time.

On Sunday,

Bruderheim U11 dropped a 6-3 pre-season game at Thorhild. The home team got off to a 50 lead before Bruderheim began mounting a comeback in the third frame but ran out of time.

Madden Cossey scored twice for Bruderheim, while Declan Morgan scored the other. The squad is scheduled to host Vegreville on Sunday.

Lamont U15 played to a 5-5 pre-season tie at Onoway on Saturday

and then shutout Camrose 6-0 on Sunday at Bruderheim Arena. On Saturday, Bruderheim came from behind three times before scoring the game’s final goal to tie the score at 2:34 of the final frame.
