Haunted house coming back to Holden designed to scare you out of your wits Patricia Harcourt Editor

This year people will have a chance to visit a haunted house so scary its creator promises a truly frightening experience, but not for the faint of heart.

“It’s really spooky,” said Paul Dagg, who is in the process of completing the haunted house in his backyard. “I can honestly say it is guaranteed to scare.”

But don’t expect to drive past and get the full experience. That’s because “It looks more like a shack,” he said. But it packs a supernatural punch inside with its scary sounds, creatures and inter-active light displays.

Everything is done by Dagg himself and is authentic to his show. “I build my own props,” he said.

But this isn’t his first rodeo, as it were, with haunted houses.

Before moving to Holden from Edmonton about 10 years ago, his Norwood Haunted House was a very popular fixture at Halloween for 16 years. The last year, he said 4,000 people came to experience the display, with people stretched around the block eager to get inside and be scared to death.

After moving to Holden with his family, Dagg recreated the haunted house, calling it the Holden House of Haunted Horrors. He did this for five or six years before arthritis prevented him from continuing.

Now several years later, he is reprising the house. “It’s the first time in three years and the 25th time I am doing it,” he said.

It’s a family affair, with his then young son happy to help out rather than go trick or treating.

Now that he is grown and gone, his wife Carol acts as a guide for the

haunted house and hands out the candy.

The family back yard contains a framed-in structure with black plastic heavy duty coverings and tarp. Says Dagg: “It looks like a building but it’s not.”

In the past, people have been so scared they have jumped through the plastic and landed outside.

And he admits to helping along this fright reaction by constructing a hallway only he can find within the building. He uses it to move up and down surreptitiously so he can whisper in someone’s ear without ever being detected, so the voice appears other worldly.

“Adults jump through the plastic drapes,” he said, the effect is so scary.

The effect is helped along with animated light sensitive gadgetry that only moves when a person gets near it, using photo electric technology. A person moves into range and

a prop lights up and stays that way until the light beam is no longer activated.

Dagg says that, from what he is seeing on social media, people from all the surrounding towns and villages are interested in coming out to his haunted house.

“It’s out there and people are responding,” he said.

The experience is “completely free,” he said, although everyone is encouraged to bring a non-perishable food item that will be donated to local charities.

The haunted house will be open from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. on October 29 and 30. Then on Halloween night itself, October 31, people can come between 6 p.m. to 10 p.m.

Just go to a dark, scary backyard at 4835 - 51 Avenue in Holden if you really want to be scared out of your wits at this, the spookiest time of the year.

Over 2,000 traffic safety tickets This past Thanksgiving long weekend, police forces across Canada led #OperationImpact2021, an initiative organized by the Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police to encourage safe driving behaviours.

Over the course of the holiday weekend, Alberta RCMP issued 2,270 tickets in support of the campaign and traffic safety enforcement.

Between Oct. 8 - 11, there were four fatalities as a result of motor

vehicle collisions across Alberta RCMP jurisdiction. Another 17 motor vehicle collisions resulted in injury.

Alberta RCMP members patrolled provincial roads and highways, issuing tickets for traffic safety offences including 1,151 speeding charges, 18 excessive speeding charges (more than 50 km/h over the posted limit), 53 driving without a seatbelt charges, and 46 distracted driving charges. Additionally,

38 impaired drivers were removed from the roadways.

Thanks to the help of Albertans, the RCMP received 67 calls from the public notifying them of dangerous or suspected impaired drivers.

Twenty-one of these reports resulted in officers locating the vehicles, confirming that the drivers were in fact impaired, and then removing them from the road.

Word on the Street: gravel truck reported Church Services travelling at excessive speeds For October 2021 On October 11, police attended a residence southeast of Viking to conduct a curfew check on an individual who is currently on 24hour house arrest. The person in question did not present herself at the door as required. Charges are pending.

Later that morning, police received a complaint of a vehicle driving erratically near a rural residence west of Viking. The complainant advised a blue Dodge pickup had sped by his residence and also burned some doughnuts but this had occurred a day prior to reporting. Police do not have any suspects at this time.

That evening, police received a complaint of an erratic driver northbound on Highway 36. The complainant advised an older white Ford truck was swerving all over the road and had crossed the centre line and almost hit her head on. A patrol was made; however, the vehicle in question was not located.

Later that night, police received a complaint of a possible impaired driver westbound on Highway 14. Patrols were made but the vehicle in question was not located. The complainant called back later to advise the vehicle was now west of Tofield near Hastings Lake. The information was passed on to Strathcona County RCMP. On October 12, police retrieved a message left on their answering machine regarding a suspicious vehicle driving around Kinsella a few days prior. The complainant

was concerned the occupants of the vehicle seemed to be scoping out his property. Police followed up with the complainant; however, were unable to identify any suspects.

Later that morning, a citizen attended the detachment to confirm her granddaughter was not in any trouble with police as another family member had received a frantic call from a female who claimed to be her granddaughter and was requesting help. The caller claimed she had been in an accident and was in police custody. A short time later, a male called the family member and advised she needed to send $7,000 so her “granddaughter” could be released. Fortunately, the family member did not comply with the request and so did not become a victim of what is known as the “Grandparent Scam.”

That afternoon, police responded to a 911 call for assistance from a female who was distressed and appeared to be delusional. She was apprehended under the Mental Health Act and transported to a facility for treatment.

That evening, police received a report of suspicious activity on the bank account of a senior living in Viking. This matter is still under investigation.

On October 14, police received a complaint of threats being uttered. The investigation into this allegation is continuing.

police to report he had received a phone call from an unknown person advising his package had been held up at the border due to illegal drugs and a warrant had been issued for his arrest. Fortunately, the complainant recognized this as a scam and did not comply with the direction to call back.

On October 15, police mediated the exchange of children between estranged parents, as there is an ongoing custody dispute. No further calls for service were received regarding this situation.

On October 16, police received a complaint of two vehicles driving at excessive speeds on Highway 14. The complainant then called back to advise he saw the vehicles in question at the Subway in Viking; however, there was a 20minute time delay in reporting that information. Police made patrols but the vehicles were no longer at the location.

That same day, police received a complaint of a theft in Kinsella. The caller advised someone had broken into his holiday trailer and stolen a tent but the theft had occurred sometime over the past two weeks. Police have no suspects at this time.

On October 17, police received a complaint of a gravel truck driving at excessive speeds on Secondary Highway 870. The complainant was unable to provide a license plate number and patrols by police did not locate the vehicle in question.

It was a beautiful fall day for this year’s Irma School Terry Fox, with participants running and walking the roads around the village to raise $3,713 in the fight against cancer.

Marc Howery Memorial Award “Marc Howery moved into Lister Hall in 1996 onto 6 Mackenzie. He was an active student in the community for three years before become the 6 Mac Floor Coordinator in 1999. Marc was a leader on his floor and a valuable asset to the very energetic and excited Mac Hall Council of that year. Following his FC term, Marc moved into Newton Place to finish his degree. Marc spent two summers working for Housing and Food Services doing maintenance in several of the residences. Marc graduated with a degree in Nutrition studies and was pursuing an after-degree in Business when he passed away. Marc's friends, family, and co-workers have created a scholarship in his name. The award will be given yearly to a student in one of the residences who demonstrates the characteristics of involvement, service, caring, compassion, dedication, leadership, athletics, and promotion of healthy lifestyle.”

This was written by Karen Hunter and was printed in the LHSA Alumni News of April 5, 2002. Karen was Marc's classmate from Grade 1 in Viking, AB, to University of Alberta in 2001. She was Lister Hall Students Association (LHSA) president when Marc was a floor coordinator. Karen initiated the process to create this award. The first award was presented in 2003. Flu vaccinations to begin in local area - low cases lessens burden on health system specified for seniors are on hand.

Health officials are worried there will be a rise in flu infections for the 2021-22 flu season, due to the fact there were virtually no infections last year as everyone practiced hand washing and distancing due to the COVID-19.

Alberta’s influenza immunization campaign officially began on Monday, Oct. 18. Influenza vaccine is being offered to all Albertans six months of age and older free of charge.

Alberta Health Services (AHS) wants to keep as many flu patients out of hospital this coming flu season so as not to put

With people being urged to get their flu shots early this year, flu clinics are starting to appear this week.

Viking’s pharmacy held its first of several planned flu vaccination clinics on Tuesday, October 19. This clinic along with a second later in the month are already booked up. The pharmacy is now busy booking a third clinic for the beginning of November.

For the present, there is only one kind of flu vaccine available, and no vaccines

more pressure on a struggling health care system. A fourth wave of mainly unvaccinated COVID-19 patients have been filling up hospitals and intensive care units since September but even adding capacity beds is barely keeping up with it.

“By keeping the number of influenza cases and outbreaks low, we can help protect at-risk Albertans and reduce the pressure on our healthcare system,” AHS stated.

AHS public health clinics will be for children six months to under five years of age and their immediate families or

household members. Each person needs to book an appointment as there are no drop-ins.

Anyone five years of age and older can make an appointment for a participating pharmacist and/or doctors’ office, with appointments starting on Oct. 18.

Health Link does not have information on what pharmacies or healthcare providers offer influenza vaccine so it will be up to the person to call and find this out for themselves.

Health officials state it is safe to get the flu vaccine and COVID-19 shot at the same time.

Irma News Viking man charged in thefts Family loses landmark barn to fire

The Irma Fire Department was called to Sheldon Archibald’s on Saturday evening.

Unfortunately their landmark barn was engulfed in flames and completely destroyed.

The family also lost several vehicles and pieces of farm equipment.

Irma School presented their achievement awards last week.

Freda Firkus turned 90 years of age last week.

Her birthday celebrations were capped off with a display of fireworks for friends and neighbours.

Freda has been spending time with her son Mervin and family until her new mobile home is ready for occupancy.

Lyle Reed passed away earlier this month in Lacombe.

He was raised in Irma and graduated from Irma School in 1961.

He is survived by his wife, four children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

We extend sympathy to his sister Lois (Gordon) Larson and extended family in the Irma area.

A Viking man has been charged in the alleged theft of plants from residential yards which had plant owners upset about losing their plants and others worried about losing them.

After an extensive investigation into the numerous complaints of trespassing and thefts of various plants from people’s yards over the past several months, Viking RCMP charged 24-year-

old Wayne Scott of Viking with the following offences: - 2 counts of Sec. 355(b) CC – Possession of Property Obtained by Crime Under $5,000; - 7 counts of Sec. 177 CC – Trespass at Night; - 4 counts of Sec. 430(4) CC – Mischief Under $5,000; - 1 count of Sec. 334(b) CC – Theft Under $5,000; - 1 count of Sec. 733.1(1) CC – Breach of Probation;

- 1 count of Sec. 3 TTP – Trespass on Premises.

Scott was arrested in Viking on October 16 and transported to the Vegreville Detachment for a Judicial Interim Release Hearing. Bail was denied and he has been remanded into custody until his first court appearance in Vegreville this week.

Police also report that Scott had an outstanding

warrant out of Camrose for a Break and Enter and this warrant was executed at the same time. He was also remanded on this charge.

Winds of change coming to County after municipal election Patricia Harcourt Although only one seat on Beaver County Council is changing hands after the municipal election on October 18, it means change for the county’s power seat - the reeve’s chair.

Jim Kallal, who represented Division 2, was the reeve for the majority of the four year term.

His leaving means another person will become the reeve, which is chosen during the organizational

meeting for a one-year term.

Councillor Kevin Smook, who represents Division 1 after being elected by acclamation, was a former reeve in a different administration.

After Kallal left Division 2, two candidates vyed for the seat in the election with Lionel Williams beating Zsuzsanna Hemperger.

Division 1’s Smook and Division 5’s Dale Pederson both stayed in office by acclamation.

But there was an election in

Divisions 3 and 4, even though there was no change in representation.

In Division 3, former Deputy Reeve Gene Hrabec was re-elected, beating out Ron Yarham, a local cattle farmer and former reeve.

In Division 4, Barry Bruce was re-elected in a close race against two other challengers. Bruce beat Shawn O’Shea by just three votes (100 - 97), and a former councillor Dale Collison was close behind O’Shea with 91 votes.

The new council’s organizational meeting on Wednesday, October 27, will determine who gets the reeve’s chair, and how political alignments will play out for the first meeting.

Council will also have an orientation session the same day spelling out their duties and responsibilities as councillors.

The meeting will include a review of the contentious corporate review spent on by council just prior to the election.

County switching to countyrun gravel haul program for control and safety Patricia Harcourt Beaver County Council has authorized administration to purchase four used tractor trailer units and four gravel trailers at an auction or dealer to a maximum of $1 million in cost.

Superintendent of Transportation Dan Blackie explained the reasons for the purchases as a way of the county retaining some control over the gravel haul work which was not possible when contracting to outside companies.

“Although the drivers were directed by our gravel checkers for dumping locations, issues such as speed, driving practices, accountability and punctuality were out of our direct control,” he said, in his Oct. 6 report to council.

“Administration would like to enhance consistency, accountability, transparency and safety for county employees and residents by moving from a contractor-based gravel haul contract to. county-run gravel run.”

Once the gravel haul was finished, the trucks and temporary staff could help with construction or hauling gravel to trouble spots, said Blackie, “thus allowing the grader operators who currently often haul for themselves to remain in the grader,” thereby increasing efficient use.

“These staff could haul gravel or clay to the culvert crew who currently has to stop working to go get gravel or clay for themselves,” he said.

The four used trucks and trailers are estimated to cost within $1 million. Blackie asked that administration be given the authority to make the purchases when the best deals arise at an auction or used dealer without having to come back to council for council approval.

Council also had the option of renewing the contract of last year’s contractor, which expires at the end of this year, for another year.

Blackie pointed out that the price for the next year would be at a higher rate.

“But I am requesting that we go a different route,” he said, “in-house rather than a contractor,” which he said would be the safer alternative.

And, “so we’re not locked into these contractors. With the dryer

weather this year, “there was not as many miles needed,” but the contractor had 500 miles to do in the deal made for 2021.

“I see nothing wrong with it,” said Division 5 Councillor Dale Pederson, “I think we should move forward on this recommendation.”

“I think it’s an excellent way to go,” said Division 4 Councillor Barry Bruce. “It puts the county in charge, and we can target the project.”

Deputy Reeve Gene Hrabec (Division 3) wanted to know how not having a gravel quota could affect the county financially, minus the cost for gravel checkers, etc.

“This would eliminate that,” he said, “we could gravel yearround.” He suggested the county doing the work would be less expensive than a contractor but the up front costs of the trucks would offset this.

But Blackie said initial costs would diminish over time.

“Then it’s only wages and truck maintenance,” he said, noting the county wouldn’t be “buying all four trucks at once.”

Hrabec responded by saying the idea of supporting local appealed to him by hiring locally. “Keeping money in the community is a good thing,”and would offset not hiring local truckers.

But Blackie also said the decision would have to be one or the other.

“It’s all or none with this,” he said.

With the county doing the work, “it would give us more freedom and safety,” to decide what to do if another bad spring arises, for instance.

“Local employment will resonate with local people,” he said. Blackie said four individuals would be employed for eight months of the year.

“When they are laid off we’ll still have the trucks in the yard,” so in the winter county drivers could stockpile gravel in the Ryley yard.

“So the trucks are utilized all year round.”

County council voted to purchase four used tractor trailer units and four used gravel trailers to a maximum of $1 million.

Added to the approved motion was that the funds for the purchases would come from reserves if the equipment is bought in 2021.

Outgoing Council sets secondary highway priorities for MLA Patricia Harcourt Beaver County Council approved a short list of secondary highway priorities for Alberta Transportation’s consideration at the Oct. 6 regular meeting.

Reeve Jim Kallal (Division 2) received a request from Camrose constituency MLA Jackie Lovely for council’s highest three priorities for work on secondary highways, which run through local municipalities but are the jurisdiction of the province.

“These priorities will be considered

by Alberta Transportation as they prepare their 2022 budget,” stated Dan Blackie, superintendent of county transportation.

The department chose 7.5 miles on S.H. 870 from Hwy. 14 to Hwy. 619; 11

miles on S.H. 857 from Hwy. 14 to Hwy. 26; and 13 miles on S.H. 854 from Hwy. 14 to Twp. Rd. 480 (county border).

Reeve Jim Kallal (Division 2) noted that S.H. 834 just east of Tofield was not included on the list, even though it already has pavement.

The 834, “is in dire need,” he said, “of having a shoulder built onto the road plus a lift.” Calling it “a lot of work, Kallal said, “It’s “been on the radar” ever since the previous MLA Jessica Littlewood represented the area.

Smook agreed, “I know it’s had some attention recently,” he said, referring to the new interchange built at Hwy. 14 and S.H. 834.

“But it’s an oversize load corridor,” he said, adding “now’s a good time to advocate (for road widening work to be

done) from Hwy. 14 north.”

Smook said that, with the large vessels using that road to access Highway 16 it causes an issue for oncoming traffic on the narrow road.

“When an oversize vessel comes and forces other vehicles over on the side,” he said, adding that infrastructure concerns are also looming as the pavement deteriorates due to the wide loads.

“I think it’s worth at least to tell the MLA,” he said. Blackie concurred, saying he had only been thinking of getting gravel roads to pavement for the list.

Division 5 Councillor Dale Pederson recounted the need to pave S.H. 870, citing the bottleneck for traffic at Viking. Grain and livestock truckers from the northeast of the province

avoid using the 870 because of the road condition and the dust causing a bottleneck at Viking.

“I think it would be viewed favourably as not a huge project,” he said.

However, council passed a motion by Smook to add a friendly amendment to include work on the 834 north from Hwy. 14, once the interchange was completed, “to keep it on the provincial radar.”

Hrabec said it was his understanding that, once the interchange was completed, resurfacing of the 834 going north “would be next.”

The motion also accepted including the three roads suggested by administration to put on the priority list, along with the 834 recommendation.

Lindbrook Estates landowners working with County to conduct water management study The county has been working with affected landowners in Lindbrook Estates since spring 2020 to deal with flooding on the County’s municipal reserve (MR) lot. Wood Environment and Infrastructure Solutions (Wood) was hired by the County in 2020 to survey the lands affected, starting at the direct upstream culvert on the MR, and through the subdivision to find any areas that were affecting the flow of water.

Administration reviewed this report with council in November, and council directed administration to engage the landowner directly downstream of the

County’s MR lot for the purposes of reinstituting a drainage course through their property.

Administration has been working with Wood and legal counsel to design a solution that would allow the reinstallation of a drainage course through the affected property, however the landowner and the county have not been able to come to an agreement on the exact solution or potential costs.

Administration met with Wood and legal counsel in August to try to work through the requests put forward by the landowner, at which time, Wood informed the County that, in order to

design a solution properly, they would need to conduct a study of the entire subdivision and upstream catchment area, in order to identify the anticipated water flows through the affected properties.

Per Wood, this needs to be done to ensure that any work undertaken by the County does not have an adverse effect on landowners downstream of the work.

Wood Environment and Infrastructure Solutions is proposing to start work immediately, in order to have their preliminary work completed by mid November, prior to any snow-

fall. They are also proposing to hold an open house with affected landowners in late November or early December to inform the landowners of the county’s objectives and ensure that all known issues will be taken into consideration.

Council did not agree to proceed with the water management study in Lindbrook Estates.

Councillors believe that there is enough information available to proceed with a solution, and subsequently passed a motion that administration continue to engage with the landowners to find a solution regarding drainage issues in Lindbrook Estates.

Campgrounds Closed for the Season Black Nugget Lake, Camp Lake Campgrounds and online reservations are now closed for the Season.

Firearms Regulation Firearms Regulation Reminder Beaver County Enforcement Services would like to remind citizens of the regulations surrounding use of firearms. These regulations are found in the Alberta Wildlife Act and citizens are urged to review this legislation frequently.

The legislation can be reviewed in full by visiting the Alberta Queens Printer website, clicking the Laws Online/Catalogue tab and then typing Wildlife Act. According to Section 51(1) it is illegal for a person to discharge a firearm from, or cause a projectile from a firearm to pass along or across any roadway. The roadway would also include the ditch portion extending to any private or public land. If there is no identifiable property line (ie. fence) the ditch portion is considered to extend 20 feet from the closest edge of the travelled portion of the roadway.

Additionally, Section 52(1) prohibits discharging of a firearm within 200 yards, or causing a projectile from a firearm to pass within 200 yards of any occupied building. It is also unlawful to discharge any firearm at night, with night being defined as being ½ hour after sunset and ending at ½ hour before sunrise the following day. The current sunrise/sunset table for our area can be found at www.albertaregulations.ca.

Specifically, for the upcoming firearm hunting season, Section 2(1) of the Petty Trespass Act prohibits the entry on any land without the permission of the owner or occupier of the land. If charged and convicted a person may be liable to a fine up to $2000. Landowners are not required to post signage prohibiting trespassing for this charge to be laid. Land that is under cultivation, surrounded by a fence or natural boundary, or that is enclosed in a manner that indicates the owner’s intention to keep persons off the land or animals on the land is by default considered to be private even without signage.

Always ask permission for entry on any land for hunting or any other purposes.

Both campgrounds have seen significant increases in campers in the past few years, this year both campgrounds were exceptionally busy.

No doubt, residents and visitors are catching onto the great experience they can have right here in Beaver County.

Black Nugget Lake, features 90 sites, open May – October. 6 full service sites, 33 powered sites + one powered overflow site, 39 non-serviced sites. We also have 4 non-serviced tent sites, 4 powered group sites (min 3 units per group site, but room for more) and 4 non-serviced group sites (min 3 units per group site, but room for more).

At Black Nugget Lake, it’s been a great year for bird watching, we have had numerous pelicans, and migratory water fowl. Black Nugget Lake is long and winds around the campground, making it perfect for kayaking, canoeing and hiking. Visitors are also enjoying the new site improvements and green spaces. This past fall/spring, new sites were built close to the Lake with room for large RVs, or visit the day use areas, perfect for a day of fishing and picnicking. In the new year visitors will see an upgraded concession, public washrooms and showers. The lake continues to be a popular draw – each year Black Nugget is stocked with rainbow and tiger trout. We encourage you to come out to catch some spectacular sunsets and fish! Find Black Nugget Lake Park 15 minutes east of Tofield, from Hwy 14 turn south on RR 182.

Viking’s mayor-elect looks for a fresh perspective with new council Patricia Harcourt Editor

As the mayor-elect of Viking, Laura Yakiwchuk is promising to work for the mandate outlined in her election platform.

Yakiwchuk beat her opponent, incumbent councillor Clint Nearing, by a margin of 218-157 in the October 18 municipal election.

“I’m really excited and proud to be the mayor of Viking,” she said. “I’d like to bring back a community volunteerism base, see us address the abandoned buildings on main street, have a

community forum, and re-think the process of bylaw enforcement.

“We need to revisit how bylaws are enforced,” said Yakiwchuk. She wants to build up the community volunteer base in the community, doing things like simply asking people if they would like to join a group or organization to help out the community.

She noted how the volunteerism often stops once a family’s children have outgrown the kid activities in town, and said this is just when someone may have the time to put into the community.

As for people being allowed to speak their minds at a public forum, Yakiwchuk said it would have to wait “until COVID things settle down,” referring to the pandemic.

Viking Council lost one incumbent, Dana Ewashko, who was not successful in being re-elected to the new fourseat town council. Incumbents Gary Hafso and Debbie O’Toole-Balaban were re-elected.

But Yakiwchuk believes the new people on council, combined with the two bringing continuity to the table, will be a great addition. Elected for the first time is James Buttner, who has spearheaded Vikings in the Streets, and

Cindy Lefsrud, who is a former councillor and mayor.

“We have new players at the table so that brings new perspectives,” she said.

Viking’s newly elected council will be holding its first meeting on Monday, October 25, to organize the upcoming year and choose town representatives for the various boards and committees.

Province announces late Tuesday continuing care to be protected with new restrictions Patricia Harcourt Editor

The province is putting in place extra restrictions effective as of Monday, October 25, to protect vulnerable elderly persons living in continuing care facilities.

As of that date, masking will be required for visitors entering these facilities.

Residents being admitted to the facility or returning from hospital will have to quarantine until they test negative for COVID-19.

Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. Deena Hinshaw also strongly recommended that family and friends who are not vaccinated not visit residents at these facilities.

Hinshaw warned that facility operators still have a mandate to put in place extra rules, such as requiring proof of vaccination, if deemed appropriate.

The masks must be worn in all areas of the facility, including residents’ rooms.

“Masking is mandatory for all visitors regardless of vaccination status,” said Hinshaw, during a COVID-19 update Oct. 19. “Residents are not required to be masked at this time.”

She said exceptions could be made in cases where communicating with the resident proves to be a challenge, such as those hard of hearing or with dementia. The staff at the facility will make those decisions, she said.

Facility operators can make additional rules after consulting with residents and their families.

These extra measures could include requiring visitors to show proof of vaccination or undergo rapid testing.

At the COVID-19 update, officials said the fourth wave is being mitigated somewhat by the measures put in place by the province.

But Premier Jason Kenney warned that the

problem has not been stopped by any means.

Even with extra beds added to intensive care units, the capacity rate is 75 per cent, but this is down from the 90 per cent of several weeks ago. The daily case counts and positivity rates are down as well.

But there is still concern that nine days after the Thanksgiving Day long weekend, a surge in case numbers may still happen.

“So far there is no evidence of a Thanksgiving spike in cases,” said Premier Jason Kenney.

“But we still have a long way to go…We still have more people in hospital than during any other of the three previous waves.”

Kenney also urged

people to head to a pharmacy or book online for a flu shot to help keep cases of flu from adding to the pressure in hospital wards and ICUs. “The numbers are continuing to decline but we need to stay on top of this,” he said, noting the virus is “particularly deadly for the elderly and vulnerable.”

He added: “We are still dealing with a crisis of the never vaccinated,” with a majority of those in hospital having no vaccine in their system.

Still, 86.1 per cent of people over the age of 12 have had at least one dose of vaccine, and 77.6 per cent are fully vaccinated, he said.

Locally, as of Oct. 19, aggregate case numbers

reveal Viking (Beaver County East) with nine active cases of the virus; Tofield (Beaver County West) has 15 cases.

The M.D. of Wainwright has 70 active cases, and Flagstaff County has 28.

As for vaccinations for COVID-19, Viking (BCE) has 68.5 per cent of people over 12 vaccinated with at least one dose, and 60..8 per cent with two doses.

Tofield (BCW) has 62.4 per cent with at least one vaccine, and 57.3 per cent fully vaccinated.

The M.D. of Wainwright has 68.3 per cent with one dose, and 60.7 per cent with two doses.

Flagstaff County has 68.8 per cent with at least one dose, and 60.9 per cent fully vaccinated.
