The people have spoken, new Mundare mayor defeated, faces on Andrew Council former Reeve loses seat

BY JANA SEMENIUK The village of Andrew will be welcoming their new council team made up of four new councilors and one incumbent, after the 2021 municipal election Oct. 18.

Unofficial results indicate that the five council seats were won by; newcomer Tammy Pickett who led the tally with 111 votes, incumbent Osama Hamed with 96, Benny Dubitz with 90, Merwin Haight with 89

and Barry Goertz with 84.

The remaining candidates were newcomer Angela Diedrich who finished with 81 votes and incumbent Gary Leppek with 73.

Although the council is almost entirely new, Chief Administrative Officer Pat Skoreyko said she isn’t surprised.

“We only have one incumbent, but that’s expected with so many new people,” she said.

“It was an exciting elec-

tion year.”

Skoreyko said that voter turnout was on par with other elections.

“We usually get around 160 voters coming out, and this year we had 157,” she said.

“The people have spoken. We live in a democratic society and the people have spoken as it should be.”

As of 2016, the village of Andrew had a population of 425.

Perrin elected Lamont Mayor, two new councillors win

BY JANA SEMENIUK The town of Lamont is welcoming new Mayor, Kirk Perrin, and two new council members, Colleen Holowaychuk and Linda Sieker, to join the rest of the council incumbents Dave Taylor, Al Harvey, Jody Foulds and Perry Koroluk after the 2021 Municipal election Oct. 18.

New Lamont Mayor Perrin, who joined council after being first elected in 2017, expressed his optimism for the future.

“I am very excited to get to work with the new Council. Every member brings; talents, skills, and ideas which will greatly benefit our community. I believe we will be an efficient and creative team for the betterment of all our residents and business,” he said.

“I would like to say it’s been a privilege to serve the Town of Lamont as mayor for the past 10 years and I wish the newly elected council every success,” he said.

Perrin received 260 votes to Skinner’s 190.

Countillors received: Linda Sieker, 310; Colleen Holowaychuk, 290; Dave Taylor, 272; Perry Koroluk, 237; Jody Foulds, 218; Al Harvey, 203; and Matt Levicki, 173.

FRANCHISE FEE INCREASE NOTICE Please be advised that the Town of Bruderheim is proposing to increase the local access fee, which is charged to FortisAlberta Inc. (FortisAlberta) for use of municipal lands for its power lines effective January 1, 2022*.

The fee is recovered by FortisAlberta from its customers as the local municipal access fee on electric billings of all customers that receive electric service in the Town of Bruderheim. This local access fee will be increased from $0.00 (0%) to $1.42 (2%) of the delivery charge of FortisAlberta, excluding energy related riders. This calculation is based on 640 kWh consumption in 30 days.

BY JOHN MATHER Across Lamont County the voters spoke Oct. 18.

They spoke with the largest voice in Mundare where one-term councillor Cheryl Calinoiu defeated incumbent Mike Saric to become the town’s new mayor.

Calinoiu becomes the first woman to lead the town and the first indigenous mayor the town has ever had.

Irene Talaga was returned to councillor, but otherwise Calinoiu will be working with an all rookie council.

Calinoiu won the mayor’s chair with 192 votes against 153 for incumbent Mike Saric.

Talaga led all councillor candidates after polls were counted with 243 votes. Rounding out the

council results were Eddie Shepel who wrestled a council seat with 188 votes; Glen Rozumniak, 180; and Rick Patrie with 172.

Former councillor Frank Rosypal received 132 votes with Doug Kleen getting 106 and John Bruyere getting 101 votes.

In Lamont County the incumbents were all returned except in the more urban oriented Division Two where Aaron Wick defeated long-time councillor and former Reeve Wayne Woldanski 251 votes to 155.

In Division One incumbent Daniel Warawa held off a challenge from Kevin Andrychuk getting 162 votes to his competitor’s

In Division Three, current Reeve David Diduck won 183 votes against 109 for his challenger Chris Klita.

In Division Four which takes in the northeast corner of Lamont County, incumbent Roy Anaka won 120 votes against 54 for newcomer Bonnie Lynn Fawcett.

In Chipman two woman candidates were elected to council, joining incumbent Morris Langevin and defeating incumbent Graham Godlien. Shana McIntyre led all candidates with 84 votes, while Trudy Smith received 66. Morris Langevin was returned to council with 63 votes and incumbent Graham Godlien lost his seat receiving only 29 votes.

Lamont County scholarship winners announced

BY JOHN MATHER At their regular council meeting Oct.12, Lamont County Council named the recipients of the 2021 Centennial Scholarships.

The scholarships award $1,000 to two County students who are pursuing post secondary studies. The students must have demonstrated community involvement, extracurricular activities, show career goals and aspirations,

and demonstrate academic achievements.

“We were certainly impressed with the two winners this year,” said Reeve David Diduck after presenting cheques for $1,000 each to Ali Akitt and Kierstyn Buck.

Akitt graduated from Lamont High School with exceptional marks in math and chemistry.

She is attending the U of A in the Faculty of Education working to a

Bachelor’s degree in Secondary Education.

Buck is also a Lamont High grad with strong math and chemistry marks.

She’s attending the University of Saskatchewan at the College of Arts and Science in her first year of the Bachelor of Science program.

After graduation Buck plans to take a Bachelor of Nursing program.

Lamont County Centennial Scholarship winner Kierstyn Buck was on hand at Lamont County Council Oct. 12, to receive her cheque for $1,000. The other winner, Ali Akitt was at school and unable to attend the meeting. In addition to presenting the scholarships, the proceeds from the Aug. 26 Reeve’s Golf Tournament were distributed between Lamont County’s four library boards and the Lamont County Food Bank.

The food bank received 50 percent of the proceeds in the amount of $9,000 while the four library boards each received $2,250.

Mundare’s Whitetail Crossing Golf Course.

Opinion Let’s just stop saying “I’m sorry”

BY JOHN MATHER I’m sorry – it no longer cuts it.

We’re in the midst of a pandemic. People are dying. And yet our provincial politicians are trying to score political points by spreading falsehoods and promoting things they know nothing about.

In Ottawa, in the midst of cancel culture that wants to rip down every statue of those who formed our early history, our Prime Minister continually lies to us and then says “I’m sorry.”

Those people, that are on the cancel list, may not have been politically correct by today’s standards, but they went in their quest of nation-building and educating with the best of intentions.

So with apologies to Brenda Lee, let’s modify her 1960 hit single lyrics of “I’m Sorry” to suit our current politicians and bureaucrats.

For Trudeau the younger, I’m sorry, so sorry, That I was such a fool, I mocked in blackface, Oh, yes, I was that cruel, Oh, oh, oh, oh ….

You tell me mistakes Are part of being young But that don't right The wrong that's been done or I'm sorry So sorry Please accept my apology But I was blind And did as I was told, you see Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, yes Jody told me, mistakes Are part of being young But I didn’t listen I did what had to be done She’s gone, she’s gone, oh yes she’s gone.

Then last week, Alberta NDP leader Rachel Notley finally got around to apologizing for blaming a 14-year-old youth’s death on Covid, after he died of brain cancer. He had been in hospital for several months and had tested positive for Covid only two days before he passed away. Yet Notley quickly blamed his death on Covid and pointed her finger at the UCP, blaming their policies or lack thereof for aiding the child’s death.

Letter to the Editor Unvaxxed discrimination - our freedoms were fought for Dear Editor: Did you know that if you are unvaxxed, you may not enter certain businesses in Lamont County you may need to be able to access?

On October 12, I attempted to enter a business and after reading the requirements to be able to open the door to the business, I realized I was not allowed to enter as I wasn't vaccinated. So I called the owner and asked him why I wasn't allowed access to an essential service?

He informed me it is to keep the staff safe, and that twice before he had shut the service down during previous waves of covid, but this time chose to remain open.

Twice before he treated everyone as equal, but now he has made a distinction between the vaxxed and unvaxxed, even while offering a service that is a requirement.

On November 11 we remember those who died to preserve our freedoms and rights so we can be treated as

equal under the law. For all those who think it is okay to discriminate like this private business did to me yesterday, I suggest you all stay home on that day and think about it.

And I hope you have the integrity to not participate in any of the ceremonies because you, like Deena Hinshaw and Jason Kenney, have mocked their sacrifice.

Maybe it’s time for that most rare of individuals, an honest politician, in a position to do things for the good of the community and society rather than for themselves, to try and get a law past that any politicians, from leader to the simplest backbencher should be turfed out of their job, with no severance pay if they are caught lying more than three times in one term.

Our country is going down the drain in debt and inefficiency because of politicians lying to cater to their special interest groups or high paying business cronies.

It’s time for it to stop.

FROM WHERE I SIT: Mundane, Motivating, Maddening

BY HAZEL ANAKA It’s time again to corral an assortment of stray and disconnected topics into one neat package of about seven hundred words.

Municipal Elections: By the time this is published, we’ll all know who the winners and also-rans are. Hopefully, you voted for who’ll do the best job representing you. If you misled the person campaigning at your door with promises of support and then didn’t bother voting, what can I say. Broken promises and inaction run both ways.

If you voted, kudos and thank you. Where there was an incumbent, hopefully, you judged them on how they acted in the past four years.

Were they fair, responsive, and accountable?

Did they return your calls even when the news

was less than what you’d hoped for? Or do they just remember you every election cycle? Did they practice old school politics enriching themselves at the expense of the greater good? Anyone of a certain vintage will remember the good old boys practice of ‘paving’ a stretch of road up to and past the councillor’s house. Or getting extra work and special favours by bullying staff or buying good will with grand gestures.

If you threw your name in the hat and dared to put your money where your mouth is, congratulations. It’s hard to put your name and reputation ‘out there’ for others to judge. Defeat stings. It’s far easier to be an armchair critic when you look at everything through the narrow lens of what’s best for you. Or know nothing about how things really work. Or don’t have any skin in the game. It’s a helluva lot harder to balance competing needs, shrinking budgets, consensus building, legislation and policy, fair play, and common sense.

Canada-United States Border: At long last, the land border is being reopened November 8th to Canadians wishing to travel south. It’s especially of interest to us since our son, daughterin-law, and two grandsons live in Colorado. It’s scary that of the five states with the lowest vaccination rates, four of them border Canada.

The other thing that will give us pause is the current need for a negative COVID test upon return.

Hopefully, a fourteenday quarantine is an option instead.

Apparently, those tests can cost $250 each.

Our preferred method of travel has been loading up Hilary’s Acura with our favourite pillows, all-season clothing, Christmas presents, and luggage to make a road trip out of it. Of course, we also needed to bring Canadian delicacies like Smarties, Coffee Crisp, Cheezies, and BBQ chips to our deprived kin. And that’s before French bulldog, Gertie joined the family. With her (collapsible) crate, car seat, toys, food, and

wardrobe, creative packing will be required if we hit the road. Not seeing grandkids for nearly two years seems a lifetime.

The boys have grown in size, skill, and interests.

We miss them dearly.

Canadian Military: Can I just say I’ve lost track of all the seniorranking men who’ve had allegations of sexual misconduct leveled against them? Yes, this is (still) a largely male field of endeavour. Yes, that life is one most of us will never truly understand.

Yes, we appreciate what they do for us. But come

Stubbs argues for leadership review Policy says leader O’toole should be reviewed after his election strategy failed

BY JOHN MATHER Lakeland MP Shannon Stubbs is sticking to her guns after stating she wanted the Conservative Party of Canada party members to vote on the future of leader Erin O’Toole prior to going into the initial caucus meeting following the Sept. 18 federal election.

The election saw the Conservatives lose three seats in Alberta, as the party dropped two seats nationally finishing with 119 seats compared to 121 in 2019. The election saw the country maintain a minority Liberal led government.

Speaking with reporters before the meeting, Stubbs was the most critical of the Conservative election campaign. She said she wants the party to allow members to vote on O’Toole’s future within six months, rather than waiting until the 2023 convention.

“I lost three great colleagues in Alberta, in Edmonton and Calgary.

Of course I’m not happy,” Stubbs said before the meeting.

Back in the riding last week, Stubbs spoke with the leader about the issue.

“First off I’m grateful and honoured to have been re-elected to serve this riding and represent my constituents,” she said.

“My comments were based on facts and based on statistics that actually happened in this election,” she said. “Every member of the Conservative party and every Conservative party member owes it to themselves to base a discussion on the election outcome and the next steps our party takes on facts and evidence and not on emotions or feelings on what we think or hoped happened or will happen.”

Stubbs wants the party to vote on O’Toole’s future within six months and not wait until the 2023 convention.

“Our party has a rule in place in our constitution that our members must have the opportu-

nity to vote on a leadership review after a loss in a general election.

“We just lost the general election… we fell back in every single metric, in every single measure since 2019 and that’s a fact.”

She said the results aren’t in dispute, so the party should figure out a way for members to have a review of leadership in a timeframe when members are still thinking about the outcome of the election.

“What’s happening is members will have that opportunity but right now not until 2023 when the next convention is booked,” she said. “But it’s booked then because it was delayed a year because of Covid and logistical challenges.

“The timeline for the convention is pushed back from when it should have been.

Stubbs feels it’s right for the party to figure a way for the members to have a vote on its leadership review within six months.

“If it has to be a year then fine,” she adds.

“But it has to be done in a reasonable timeline.

Because the spirit and the intent of the Party rule is that the members get a say when the Party loses an election.”

She feels 2023 is too far removed from this recent election. In addition, although she says she doesn’t buy into it, there’s talk that because the country is in another minority government, there could be an election within 18 months.

“But if that did occur, then a 2023 election is too late for our members to render a judgement on the results of this election and other decisions that must be made.”

Stubbs admits her outspokenness could have an effect on her getting a shadow cabinet position in this parliament.

“It could affect that but here is what I have done since I was elected in 2015. I reflect the majority view of the people I represent,” she said.

“And from what I’ve

heard from the people I represent since Sept. 18, is that they are unsettled from the results of this election campaign. They are frustrated about some waffling that happened, some reversals of positions. I was nominated as a Conservative candidate and elected three times. I am running on Conservative principles based on our members' policies.

“It’s a fact that our leader has taken some positions that violate our members' past party policy. That’s his prerogative as the party leader.”

She said he designed the strategy for the election campaign and platform. But, she adds, it failed because they lost the election.

She adds she hears the comments “we must have the courage to change” but she’s unsure what that means.

“Neither internally or externally has he ever been specific to what he is talking about,” she said of O’Toole.

Because the leader took positions counter to members’ past policy and there were flip flops on and changes in the middle of the election to the platform on the issues, “then if he is going to continue to go in that direction to change our policies and our positions, then our members need to have a say.”

“I’ve been a grassroots member of this party for 26 years,” she said. “If I lose my shadow cabinet position or in some way are perceived to be punished because I’m speaking the truth – basically my comments are facts – and providing my leader with feedback which he has asked for, then I feel Conservative members should be very troubled by that.”

“He has said he wants the feedback and that’s my job to provide it,” she adds.

“I don’t think people in Lakeland sent me to be a bump on a log and not speak my mind,” she states. “I know what I heard from my people and I’m deeply con-

cerned about the future of our party and what may happen if we continue to double down in the direction that we’re going.”

Stubbs said she has the greatest respect for the Conservative leader.

“He has many strong qualities. I support many of the positions he has taken and he has taken many positions that were stronger than we ever had and I’m very grateful for that.

“He is competent and articulate when speaking, she adds.

“Hopefully,” she adds, “He will hear what is being said and he’ll come out with a concrete specific plan that will bring Conservative voters back to the party.”

She explained during the first post election meeting, that wasn’t there but going forward she believes that is what needs to happen.

Conservative voters in the 2021 election were unmotivated, Stubbs said. The O’Toole plan didn’t work. The platform was the most centrist (some would say left-wing) the Conservative Party of Canada has ever produced. The goal was to attract votes and win seats in suburban Ontario. Members of the O’Toole team made no secret of the fact they were willing to lose votes in western Canada if it meant gaining them in the Greater Toronto

Area.

Providing stats to back her argument, Stubbs points out the Conservative party did worse in every single measure compared to the previous election: • Lost a net two seats reducing caucus from 121 to 119; • Lost 492,000 votes from 6.24 million to 5.75 million; • Drop in popular vote of 0.6per cent from 34.3 per cent to 33.7per cent; • Popular vote lead over the Liberals fell from 220,000 to 191,000.

Bruderheim air passes tests

BY JANA SEMENIUK An air quality study, examining levels of Vo l a t i l e - O r g a n i c Compounds (VOC) in the air around Bruderheim, has concluded that the levels recorded did not exceed the provincial threshold for safety.

Air quality concerns from residents prompted the study, which was funded by the Province of Alberta and conducted by the Fort Air Partnership (FAP), a non-profit organization which has been monitoring the air within a 4500 kilometer airshed since 1997.

“Questions have arisen in recent years from residents in and around the Town of Bruderheim regarding odours and possible volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions from oil and gas installations in the area,” stated a portion of the final report.

Nadine Blaney, Executive Director of FAP, said that although the project began in 2014, data collection for the study has been intermittent.

“It started off as a project that was funded by the province for phase 1, which ran for 6 months then phase 2 which ran for a year. So, 18 months of data were collected in total between 2014 and 2018,” she said.

During the second phase, from 2017 to 2018, whole air canister samples were collected for a full year, as well as 24hour integrated air samples collected once every six days in addition to one hour integrated air samples collected each time the monitoring station reported a high level of NMHC (non-methane hydrocarbon).

Both types of samples were analyzed for the same VOC constituents, and data revealed that 99.95 per cent of the measurements taken were under 10 parts per billion (ppb). In comparison one drop of ink in a large

gasoline tanker truck would be equivalent to a concentration of 1 ppb, according to the FAP website.

The study also indicated that natural VOCs could come from a variety of sources, including vegetation, vehicle exhaust and wildfire smoke while ‘fugitive sources’ could include evaporation of solvents, leaks at industrial facilities, or come from an incinerator or flare stack.

“There are at least 50 different types of VOC that we monitored for, each with their own provincial objectives,” said Blaney. “They were all well below their provincial limits.”

Blaney explained what made this study different from the normal air monitoring that occurs around Bruderheim.

“There’s a lot of oil and gas installations and facilities in the area that we monitor continuously at the Bruderheim station. This study was more detailed and looking closely at specific substances that make up the total methane hydrocarbon amount,” she said. “Some VOCs are odorous compounds, and some are not.”

Blaney added that just because levels of VOC were below provincial limits doesn’t mean residents won’t smell them in the air.

“Just because a compound doesn’t meet a provincial threshold doesn’t mean you won’t smell it,” she said. “You can smell it at low levels even though it didn’t exceed the level that insures no harm to human health or environment.”

The study not only concluded that VOCs did not exceed provincial limits, the data also indicated no discernable trends in NMHC measurements (also VOCs but non-methane hydrocarbon.) over the past five years.

New agreement allows County Fire Department to offer better services

BY JOHN MATHER Lamont County has signed a regional fire service agreement with its urban municipalities for a 10-year period.

“The goal is to essentially maintain an efficient and professional service for residents across the entire county, not just in one town or village,” said Lamont County Fire Chief Shayne Milliken.

“The way the agreement is laid out is that the County provides the knowhow and personnel,” he explained.

“The County does the financing while the municipalities provide a safe and efficient fire station to house the equipment.”

Under the terms of the agreement which was signed during the summer, the fire halls must be looked at in terms of capacity and meeting a variety of codes.

In Mundare, the fire hall is outdated and a new firehall is being planned, but it will be several years before it is completed.

“We have a couple of fire stations that are in need of attention,” said Milliken. “In terms of capacity and things like that. What we want to make sure we do is strike the right balance between needs and wants. We have to be able to effectively provide the service.”

Milliken further explains the County is interdependent on all its halls working together when necessary.

“Every station has a pumper and each has a rescue unit to provide critical services on the highways,” stated Milliken. “Some stations have tanker trucks and brush trucks while others don’t. The beauty of the system we’ve been developing over the past year and a half is what happens, in say Andrew, will have an impact in the Lamont or Mundare district so we’ve developed regulations to deal with this.”

He said when a fire call comes in now automatically without any thought two fire districts respond to the call.

“One may be stood down before they reach the scene,”said Milliken.

“But two initially respond so we have

“It’s truly a team effort because no one hall is going to the fire scene.”

Milliken further explained that this decision was made within the departments and was not part of the new fire agreement.

“It’s used primarily for larger calls such as structure fires,” he added. “If we have a feeling we may need more than one district to respond to an incident then we’ll make that call. That process has been in place for about a year.”

He said that equipment will be constantly upgraded over the years of the agreement.

“We’ve been working over the past year to develop a fleet replacement plan. While nothing in the agreement

speaks directly to equipment replacement we do have a core level of service we’ve committed to and we’re currently able to meet that with our current equipment.”

He said the department is always looking to keep its fleet upgraded and doing so on a cost-effective basis.

Last fall, Lamont County replaced two aging tankers with newer ones and Milliken stated he didn’t know how the department would have managed to get through this spring's fire season without the newer units.

“We just don’t know how we would have done it without them,” he said.

Another thing he said has been positive, was the switch to the provincial radio system.

“We had a really good radio system

before,” said Milliken. “All our fire stations are on the same frequency. With the provincial system we were able to find cost-effective hardware and we’ve been able to eliminate all dead spots from around the county.”

He added having one dispatch channel and firefighters having the radios at home he found people are more responsive in getting out on a fire call.

“When dispatch lets us know we have a call coming in, people can now hear about it on their mobile units before the actual page comes in.”

The fire agreement was finalized in early July, said Milliken. It had previously been approved by each of the urban councils prior to coming to Lamont County for final approval.

Andrew fire fighters teach children extinguisher usage and give safety tips

BY JANA SEMENIUK Fire Prevention week concluded at Andrew School Oct. 15 with a visit from the local fire department.

Deputy Fire Chief Martin Stuart, along with firefighters Dawn Connolly and Shaun Dubitz spent most of the day with students passing along fire safety tips via games and a handson demonstration outdoors.

“This year’s focus was learning what the sounds of a fire are,” said Stuart. “Sounds such as a

fire alarm and carbon monoxide detector. We had an assembly and used a game show with the teachers and students so they could learn what the sounds are.”

In addition, students were treated to a demonstration outdoors where a grease fire was initiated on a stove and extinguished.

“We teach the kids to turn off the heat source and put a lid on it. Very simple,” said Stuart.

“You never know what might happen when they are at home alone mak-

ing Kraft Dinner or something.”

Students also experienced handling a fire extinguisher.

“We have a wheelbarrow that we start a fire in, and for grades five and six we teach them how to use a fire extinguisher to put it out,” said Stuart. “We couldn’t have a fire in it this year though, because we were having troubles with the wheelbarrow.”

Stuart added that he thinks it’s important for kids to learn how to handle a fire extinguisher.

“Most people haven’t even used a fire extinguisher before,” he said.

“It gives them the handson knowledge to do it properly. The kids are timid at first, but once they start squeezing the trigger, they are more comfortable.”

Stuart has been doing the demonstration at Andrew School for the past five years.

“I’ve been doing it here as long as I’ve been on the department, so around five years,” he said. “But I’m sure it’s been happening here a

BY JOHN MATHER Mundare Fire and Emergency Service responded to a structure fire near Highway 15 and Township Road 534 on Oct. 13.

“When we arrived we could see heavy black smoke and flames coming from a basement window,” said Mundare Deputy Chief Glenda Dales.

“The guys pulled lines and we contained the fire to the basement where there was some damage. There was lots of smoke damage throughout the house.”

She said the fire was contained within three hours.

Fourteen members responded from Mundare.

Chipman was also dispatched on the initial call, but they were stood down before arriving.

Dales said a teenager was home when he saw the smoke. He got out of the house and called his mom who called 911.

“It was a good move on everyone’s part,” said Dales. “It was a good response from all perspectives.

“It was an excellent job done by our members.”

Test duty crew brought district firefighters together

BY JOHN MATHER During the peak fire fighting season earlier this spring, the Lamont County Fire Department put together a new firefighting unit on a trial basis.

“We had a three week trial in April and May where we had a fully staffed fire engine responding within the towns and County alike,” said Lamont County Fire Chief Shayne Milliken. “It was staffed ten hours a day, seven days a week.”

He explained the crew for this truck was made up of members from all of the fire districts across the county.

“The whole purpose of this pilot project was in testing the effectiveness of having a crew responding immediately to a fire call from anywhere across the county.”

He said it allowed a crew to get on scene quicker so an incident could be handled earlier and prevent smaller inci-

dents from becoming major ones.

During the three week trial Milliken said the crew responded to a number of incidents and officials discovered a very key improvement to response times.

“Perhaps the biggest thing we discovered was during the Monday to Friday when people are at work, a fire district responding to a brush fire at 2:30 in the afternoon knew without a doubt there was another fully staffed crew on their way to lend support.”

“It really gave us a good feeling knowing we had fully trained personnel ready during the day when many of our volunteer firefighters may have been at work.”

Firefighters from the five fire stations were asked to sign up when they could be part of the crew. Lamont County has fire stations in Andrew, Bruderheim, Chipman, Lamont and Mundare.

Milliken said to date no decision has been made as to whether the pilot project will become an integral part of the County fire department, but he added it will be part of the upcoming budget discussions.

“We would love to see it continue but we realize there are budget constraints that must be looked at.”

He said the project did have a positive impact on the level of service the fire department was able to provide.”

“I think there was a lot of benefit to that program, but it’s one of many things that get considered at budget time.”

One of the other benefits was it allowed firefighters from the various fire stations to get to know one another.

“I’ll say that perhaps over the past year, but definitely before this crew started, to have four firefighters from four different stations working on the same engine and going into

other district halls knowing that they were there in a spirit of mutual trust and they were all together to do the same jobs was almost unheard of,” said Milliken.

“Everybody has their hall and there was a lot of pride there. It was a little touchy at start because we didn’t want to be seen as going in and bulldozing the pride that they had in their home fire halls.”

“But what we found was that the team atmosphere really shone through.”

He said one of the direct benefits of that is that in the next few weeks the County Fire Department will transition to one common uniform patch. Currently each station has its own shoulder patch.

“We’re all transitioning to one common uniform patch… one department, one service all serving the same population and that can be directly attributed to that duty crew.”

Fire restrictions on in Lamont County due to dry fall weather

BY JANA SEMENIUK In a move unusual for this time of year, the County of Lamont has issued a fire restriction as of Oct. 14.

“It’s definitely not normal. Frankly this time of year we are preparing for people to start burning big piles and gearing up for brush pile season where they can burn tree trunks,’ said Lamont County Fire Chief Shayne Miliken. “But we had no choice.”

Miliken explained how an abnormal amount of fire activity prompted the move.

“We were averaging one to two fires a day for the past 14 days, and an unusual number of fires for the past 21 days.

Some were field fires. We don’t want to put a restriction on unless absolutely necessary,” he said.

Miliken described the final straw.

McBride’s last day on the job was Oct. 15.

“He retiring and will be moving with his family out of the area,” said Lamont County Fire Chief Shayne Milliken.

“It’s definitely going to leave a hole in our service.”

He said for the interim McBride’s position will be filled by Lamont Deputy Chief Scott Calder.

“Lamont and Chipman have been working very closely for the last six months. So we’re going to have Deputy Chief Calder fill in there in the interim because it’s just a natural progression.”

While the fire was successfully extinguished, Miliken said firefighters were battling the blaze

“We finally got finished around 3:30 a.m.,” he said. “The conditions were perfect for that fire to spread. We normally have moisture this time of year to help control it, but we aren’t seeing that right now.”

With a fire restriction verses an outright ban in place, Miliken explained what people are still

allowed to do.

“Basically, anything that requires a permit is restricted,” he said. “So, people can still have burn barrels or use their backyard firepits but if you need to apply for a permit such as for a field

fire or to burn yard debris it won’t be allowed.”

In terms of when the restriction is expected to be lifted, Miliken was unsure.

“Depends on the weather. Doesn’t look

like it will improve over the next seven days, but I do see some precipitation in the forecast. We might get lucky and have it only last a week,” he said.

Minor hockey ending pre-season KERRY ANDERSON These are some of the results from Minor Hockey League games held recently. (Please note that scores and scoring is taken from the websites, and some game scores and scoring is dependent on proper league entries).

Lamont U9 hockey team starts its season on Sunday at Riviere Qui Barre Arena at 2:45 against CR 1A. The following Sunday the squad takes on Smoky Lake at Bruderheim Arena.

Bruderheim U11 is 0-3 in pre-season, with some rough outings thus far.

The team plays at Thorhild on Saturday, followed by a home game on Sunday against Millet at 2:15 pm.

Madden Cossey has the team’s lone goal this sea-

son. Austin Klita and Zachary Vandelannoite have shared goalkeeping duties.

Lamont U15 is 2-1 in pre-season with a game scheduled at Onoway on Saturday and a home game at Bruderheim Arena on Sunday.

Rowan Young leads the team in scoring with 5g 2a. Sandy McDonald and Zandon Tanner have been in goal for Lamont.

Mundare’s Brandon Kowal has 1g 5a for 6 pts in six games this season playing with the U18 Fort Saskatchewan AAA team in the Alberta Elite Hockey League.
