Killam Wheat Kings extend winning streak to five games After last week’s 4-1 loss to the Wheat Kings, Cold Lake travelled to Killam on Saturday, Oct. 16, hoping for a better result, however the Wheat Kings widened their streak of wins on the weekend, shutting down the Ice 3-0.

Kobe Charchun put the Wheat Kings on the scoreboard midway through the first period, with an unassisted goal to put the game at 1-0 going into the second period.

Derek Zimmer scored Killam’s second point early in the second period, from Matthew Pfeffer and Kohl Forster, to put the Wheat Kings ahead 2-0.

Devin Naslund was steadfast in the pipes for Killam, facing 16 shots in the second period and not allowing any goals.

Charchun popped in his second of the night halfway through the third period, from Carter Burton and Brendan Erick to put the Wheat Kings ahead on three.

The Ice fired another 14 shots at Naslund, who got his first shutout of the season, and the win.

Killam travelled to Lloydminster on Sunday to take on the Bandits, coming away with a 5-4 lead and an unbroken streak of wins for the season.

The Bandits got on the scoreboard quickly, but didn’t get to enjoy their lead, as Brandon Zunti scored from Trey Forster

and Charchun to tie it up, then later in the period scored again, from Ashton Kelly and Rhett Bergseth, to put the Wheaties ahead 2-1 going into the second.

The Wheat Kings pulled further ahead on an early goal from Derek Zimmer, from Burton and Bergseth, but two goals from the Bandits tied the game.

Landon Kelndorfer scored his first of the season, from Chase Rombough, to keep the Wheat Kings ahead at the end of the period.

The Bandits tried hard to tie the game and head to overtime with a late-period single, but Killam’s Charchun answered with just 10 seconds left in the game, from Kelly and Forster, with the winning goal, putting Killam ahead 5-4.

Louise Fernandez got Sunday’s win, facing 35 shots.

Wheat Kings Head Coach Bob Charchun says, “We are continuing to get strong goaltending from both our goaltenders, and our top two lines are having success.

“Defensively, the numbers show well.

We still feel there are areas of our game that need to be better. We are making far too many needless turnovers-this is an area that we need to clean up.

“We have good size with our D and we want them to be physical and cleanly move the puck up the ice.”

“We do have some confidence within our group right now and we need to keep that going. We have to take advantage of playing in our own rink for the next three games.

“We have put ourselves in a good spot.

We know teams will be wanting to hand us our first loss of the year so we need to be prepared for the push each night we play.”

He adds, “We are very happy with the start we have had but we cannot be complacent, there’s lots of improvement left to be had.”

Hardisty’s Jackson Pasztor is playing for the Wainwright Bisons again this year, after his first year in the NEAJBHL was cut short when the season was cancelled due to COVID. Pasztor has six points in the 21-22 season already, with three goals ad three assists, earning him 12th place on the leaderboard. The Bisons are three and two on the season.

St. Paul holds third place, at eight points, the Wainwright Bisons are in fourth, followed by the Lac la Biche Clippers, Vermilion Tigers, with the Bandits at the bottom.

Kobe Charchun sits at the top of the Scoring Leaders, with Ashton Kelly close behind in third, Carter Burton in fifth, and Brandon Zunti in 11th.

The Wheat Kings will host the Wainwright Bisons on Wednesday, Oct. 20, then will play the St. Paul Canadiens at home on Friday, Oct. 22.

Online forum for Hardisty candidates GIFT IDEA! Leslie Cholowsky Editor

Last Wednesday evening, Oct. 14, the Hardisty and District Development Group arranged a candidate forum, given the Hardisty Town Council candidates an opportunity to introduce themselves to residents, and talk about why they were running.

Seven of eight candidates appeared at the event, which was posted on social media, available after the event for those who could not attend.

Candidates showed a diverse range of experience but each expressed their commitment to the community, and to improving it as they are able.

Only three of

Hardisty’s current Council members are running again, Mayor Doug Irving and Councillors Connie Beringer and Brett Baumgartner.

The remaining candidates are new to the field, but not to Hardisty.

Hot topics included business attraction and retention, streamlining new development processes, and working to grow the town.

Camilla Morrison, the eighth candidate, was unable to attend.

The Development Group posed questions to candidates, ranging from “What would you do to grow Hardisty?” to “What would you do to support the reopening of our school and hospital?”

In the final portion of the forum, the floor was

opened up for questions from the audience.

Scholarship celebrates legal Guest Editorial for Small Business Week: Cutting red tape designation of women as ‘persons’ There is nothing small about small business. Making up 99 per cent of all businesses in our province and accounting for nearly half of all private sector employment, these companies contribute billions of dollars into Alberta’s economy every year.

The small business community is determined, innovative and fearlessly optimistic. But that doesn’t mean we can’t do more to support these entrepreneurs.

With this week being Small Business Week, I wanted to share a few of the ways that Alberta’s government is helping small businesses.

First and foremost, as the Associate Minister of Red Tape Reduction, my goal is to cut red tape by one third to get Albertans back to work and to bolster Alberta’s Recovery Plan.

Small businesses told us from the start that the regulatory burden was crushing their competitiveness. That’s why we’re focused on streamlining time consuming processes, eliminating redundant reporting requirements, and modernizing regulatory frameworks to save small businesses both time and money.

So far we have made great progress, cutting red tape by more than 17 per cent.

So what does this mean for you or your business?

To start with, it means more opportunities for small distillers and more choice for consumers. Alberta’s liquor policies were outdated so we modernized them, spurring small businesses to increase sales, engage with customers and expand business opportunities with new products.

We also updated regulations to give Albertans more access to low-risk homeprepared goods like jams, jellies, canned goods and candies and created new revenue opportunities for bed and breakfasts.

Further, we eliminated more than 10,000 permits for Alberta’s truckers while maintaining road safety, meaning that they can continue to do what they do best, create jobs and drive our economic recovery.

These are just a few examples of the hundreds of initiatives we have completed to date and we know there’s more to do.

We will continue to work with industry leaders, non-profits, Albertans and the experts on our Red Tape Reduction Industry Panels to identify regulatory barriers that are getting in the way of our job creators and slowing the economic recovery and growth of our province.

Eliminating unnecessary red tape that leads to meaningful impacts for Albertans will continue to be my number one priority, which is where you come in.

Our government shares a common vision with job creators operating small businesses: we want Alberta to be a destination that draws talent and leaders in innovation, investment, and business from across Canada and around the globe.

We need your ideas. If you know of any red tape that continues to be a barrier for the success of small businesses in our province, we want to hear about it.

On Oct. 18, 1929, less than a century ago, women were finally declared "persons" under Canadian law. The historic legal victory is due to the persistence of five Alberta women -- Emily Murphy, Nellie McClung, Irene Parlby, Louise McKinney, and Henrietta Muir Edwards.

In the spirit of the Famous Five, the Persons Case Scholarship will invest $100,000 in future leaders promoting gender equality.

The scholarship was established in 1979 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Persons Case, the historic court decision confirming that women were considered ‘persons’ in Canadian law.

The Persons Case Scholarship is open to students of all genders in the arts, humanities, and social sciences fields whose work advances gender equality or who are studying in fields where their gender is under-represented. Each student will receive $2,500, for a total investment of $100,000.

“The Persons Case was a landmark moment in Canadian history. This scholarship honours the fortitude and leadership provided by the Famous Five – all Alberta women – and will empower the students of today to be trailblazers in their own right. This investment will support women, strengthen our workforce and help secure Alberta’s economic future.”

Daysland latest in round of temporary Emergency Department closures Leslie Cholowsky Editor

Alberta Health Services announced Monday, Oct. 18, that the Daysland Health Centre’s Emergency Room Services are temporarily without onsite physician coverage from Monday, Oct. 18, to Friday, Oct. 22.

Patients requiring emergency medical care during this time are asked to call 911.

Ambulance transfers will be re-routed to surrounding facilities, including Camrose and Killam.

This comes on the heels of a similar temporary closure at the Killam Health Care Centre, where Covenant Health announced via social media that the Killam Emergency Department would be closed over Thanksgiving weekend until Tuesday, Oct. 14.

Killam Mayor Ben Kellert talked to Global News about the temporary closure in Killam, calling it “unfortunate, and a sign of how the health-care system is

struggling right now.

“Our doctors are stretched like any doctors in urban centres,” he told Global.

Hardisty Emergency Department has been temporarily closed since April of 2020, at the time, due to COVID-19.

At the same time, AHS said that it would temporarily designate the facility’s acute care beds to continuing care spaces, an ongoing situation that has been exacerbated by the temporary closure of the Galahad Care Centre due to staff shortages and the transfer of patients to that facility.

Alberta NDP Leader Rachel Notley shared both recent closures on Twitter, adding, “Emergency Room closures are unacceptable. We need a plan to support rural healthcare.”

It’s not just emergency room services that are suffering from shortages, as the recent stories about ambulance shortages and shut downs have indicated.

Health Sciences Association of Alberta (HSAA),

the union governing EMS workers told CTV on Friday, Oct. 15, that calls for service for ambulances have increased by 50 per cent, which has put ambulance services in some communities into a ‘code red’ situation, where there are no ambulances available within that community.

Mike Parker, HSAA President, said that information he has sources from union members staffing ambulances indicates that Hardisty has been without an ambulance in the town for 24 days due to a staff shortage.

The Union maintains a social media page called HSAA EMS where it reports ambulance outages, showing Killam and Forestburg ambulance down for a 24-hour period from Oct. 17 to 18, and Hardisty’s ambulance dropped for a single shift on Oct. 18, although that was reported that the Killam and Forestburg down time on the same day may have been reported in error.

Hello everyone. I hope you all enjoyed the Thanksgiving holiday in one way or another. We had our son and future daughter-in-law over and were eating the turkey that I bought nearly a year ago. We are so used to a large family gathering, but that bloody COVID-19 just throws a wrench into family gatherings doesn't it? We were just having dessert when our grandson Zach and his girlfriend Brittany popped in. What a nice surprise and they gave us a lovely potted plant, with three kinds of succulents in it. Thanks so much guys.

The community sends condolences on the passing of Jim Fossum. Jim is survived by his wife Ann Fossum; their children Dean (Diane) and Karri; grandkids Trish (Clayton), Marty, Justin (Lisa), and Jennifer; and great-grandkids Reegan, Kaleb, Breena, and Anna.

This man was a multi-talented gentleman. Jim was a pipeliner, which took him across Canada for over 50 years and his wife Ann would always come to visit him, along with their grandkids. He was a talented musician, playing in a family band, singing, and playing guitar at dances and various events. This man was so artistic and could also write songs, draw, carve, and paint and enjoyed garage sales and jumping at numerous new endeavours. It was never a dull moment! Rest in peace dear Jim and may the heavens be filled with your music, till you all meet again.

It seems when one person goes to heaven the good Lord ensures that another one is born. Our neighbourhood is excited to announce that Lorne and Susan Korth are grandparents again. Their daughter Kendra Korth and partner Conrad Fowler were thrilled to welcome Toby William Kenneth Fowler into the world on Oct. 16.

Your final bit of interesting goose news: scientists using radio transmitters have tracked geese, that have flown 1000km or approximately 600 miles in one day... Wow! I needed some information on tree planting in fall, so I contacted my neighbour Carol MacRae (The Tree Coral). Here is some interesting information.

Fall is a great time to plant because the tree is going or has gone dormant.

It will not even notice if it has come out of a pot and been placed in the ground.

There is no "transplant shock" at all. You can plant until the ground freezes.

Willow trees seem to be the only trees around here that do not tolerate fall planting.

This fall Carol has planted birch, siberian larch, ponderosa pine, and spruce and can hardly wait till spring to see how well they survived.

When you plant, be sure to water the tree or shrub really well, so the roots have moisture and the root ball will freeze like an ice cube. Without that moisture you risk the roots freezerburning and losing a lot of valuable roots. My my, that is interesting.

This has been an exceptionally dry year, so soak the ground around your trees. Carol uses a soaker hose and laid it around the tree out to it's drip line on low water pressure and leaves it all day so the water soaks in. Pray for a moist spring, so the trees and crops will flourish.

The library was very happy to receive your bottles and donations for our fall fundraiser.

I saw some Canada geese flying over the farm and heard them honking. With the help of a friend, we did a little research on Canada Geese.

Did you know that in the 1950's their numbers were declining to approximately one million. The population has been revived with wildlife management to more than 8 million nowadays in North America.

They communicate to each other in loud honking calls and the sight of them heading south is one of the earliest signs that winter is on it's way.

They mate for life and the average lifespan is 10 to 25 years. Wow, they sure beat many of our human stats eh? They raise and protect their young together and also protect each other.

They are very emotional creatures. They have been observed to mourn when they lose a mate or their eggs and have been seen to remove themselves from the flock and honk mournfully.

They are extremely loyal and devoted to each other and when a mate is injured or dying, its partner will stay on even if the flock keeps flying south.

The geese share the "lead" in their v-formation that they are so well known for.

The larger stronger birds lead their flock to the wintering grounds. The lead position uses the most energy so different birds take on this strong position.

This has been a week for meetings. The library board met on Tuesday; there have been five names submitted to the village council for new library board members.

We are certainly missing Muriel, Norma, Judy, and Emma. There was a discussion on hours to have the library open. We will be asking for our clients’ opinions. Currently we are open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Muriel Fankhanel has now moved into Providence Place in Daysland and is in the process of downsizing her house, the library has received a lovely bookshelf and a large donation of very

good books. Thank you very much Muriel.

The Ag Society met on Tuesday evening. The annual meeting will be Nov. 9.

The Women’s Institute (WI) met on Wednesday afternoon. We opened with O Canada then the Mary Stewart Collect.

“Keep us, O Lord, from pettiness, let us be large in thought and word and deed” is the opening line of the Collect. All members try to live up to the pledge.

I, as president of Alberta Women’s Institutes, hope to be able to virtually drop into meetings with the local branches.

In person would be better, but in these times, we must remain safety-conscious.

Thursday, I attended a planning meeting for Friends of Battle River Train Excursions. We have planned about a dozen runs for next year

and, if health restrictions don’t interfere and the Board approves them, we will have a lot of fun.

There are tickets that were sold in advance for the run we had planned for Santa Daze in Alliance.

I heard that the church service on Sunday led by Dale Jones and L. Wickstrom was very entertaining. A joyful fellowship was held afterwards I have been in Strathmore this week so I attended the Strathmore United Church. I was also able to go to Calgary and have a visit with Mary Lockwood the cat lady. I had dinner on Sunday evening with Chrissy and Ashley Robinson, it was Ashley's birthday. Remember those little girls that used to live in Galahad and Forestburg?

FIRST receives funding towards new local mental health initiative Leslie Cholowsky Editor

The Flagstaff’s Informed Response Sharing Team (FIRST) and FFCS Executive Director (and also FIRST board member,) Lynne Jenkinson, have fielded multiple requests from residents and others within the Flagstaff region to implement programs in workplaces and communities that promote positive mental health and wellness and relationships. To that end, FIRST has proposed a new local mental health initiative that will bridge the gap in the availability and implementation of programs.

The Local Mental Health Initiative is aimed at employing a psychologist locally that Flagstaff residents can access in person, via video conferencing, or by phone.

“This increased access to a local professional will dramatically reduce time off to travel, and may also improve employee absenteeism,” Jenkinson says.

“The possible travel of two to four hours in one day to access a mental health professional creates additional stress on employees as they attempt to improve their mental health, and they are reluctant to leave their workplace for an extended length of time.”

Jenkinson says the new initiative is designed to work in partnership with local employers, mainly in the oil and gas and agricultural sectors, or with any interested partners who recognize the importance this type of service is to serve the community’s needs.

The Flagstaff Community Foundation, along with FFCS, will offer office space as an in-kind contribution, while FIRST will contract the employee to work in the office space.

Working with employers and their health insurance providers means that employees can access covered benefits locally, without the need for extended travel or time off work.

Jenkinson says that as the initiative provides this support for employees, it comes closer to self sufficiency, as insurance companies will cover the cost of the visits.

Lynne Jenkinson, FIRST Board member, accepts the first $40,000 of a four-year comittment from Inter Pipeline totalling $160,000 towards a new Local Mental Health Initiative. Making the presentation is Kim Rempel from Inter Pipeline.

Until then, however, the project needs seed money to get started and officially went from a dream to reality on Thursday, Oct. 14, when FIRST received a funding commitment from Inter Pipeline of $160,000 over the next four years, with the first installment paid this year.

The company says, “Inter Pipeline is a proud supporter of the Flagstaff’s Informed Response Sharing Team Society’s Local Mental Health Initiative.

“Here at Inter Pipeline, we strive to make a positive impact in the communities where we live and operate.

“Thank you to Lynne Jenkinson and the FIRST team for making this initiative happen.”

Jenkinson has also put out seed funding requests to other oil companies operating in the region, with an eye towards providing their employees with local access for mental health and wellness.

She says she has received funding from Gibson Energy, and is waiting to hear final results from TransCanada and Enbridge.

Kim Rempel, who made the cheque presentation on Thursday in Killam, says, “I knew Inter Pipeline would support this project. They have an excellent mental wellness benefit program.”

He adds, “That support doesn’t do you a whole lot of good without resources, and that’s what this program will bring to our region.”

Rempel didn’t just get the job of dropping of a cheque. Jenkinson says he was instrumental in the development of the initiative. “Kim came to me with an idea three years ago,” Jenkinson says.

Rempel says, “A few years back I attended a Mental Health First Aid training program, and from that, realized I could benefit from talking to someone about my own mental wellness.

“I had to travel all the way to Leduc to do that, though, which was quite inconvenient.

“I started to think about how many other people were experiencing the same inconvenience, and then started to wonder how many people were not seeking help because it’s not convenient.”

Jenkinson says this aligned so well with her own dreams for building a mental wellness program here in Flagstaff and also provided her with the idea on how it could be set up and flourish here, if a program could be designed to work with employer’s private health insurance coverage.

“That would allow us to build a program that responds quickly to our community and our resident’s needs, as well as building the professional capacity within our community.”

Jenkinson says the initiative objectives are to improve social wellbeing of residents, of families, and the community as a whole.

She says that by year five of the program, when the funding ends, she anticipates the professional will be seeing 20 clients a week, paid for through private insurance benefits, and operating self sufficiently without the need for further grants.

“When the demand fluctuates for the mental health services, the professional will participate in other FFCS, FIRST, and community initiatives.”

CleanFarms collecting Ag. pesticides and medication Leslie Cholowsky Editor

Working off the success of their current and past agricultural recycling programs, CleanFarms recently announced a repeat of their one-day collection program for farm pesticides and medications, this time in southern Alberta.

The program features one-day events in various locations in southern Alberta from Oct. 25 to 29 to collect unwanted and old agricultural pesticides and obsolete livestock, equine, and farm animal medications.

The organization says, “CleanFarms’ ‘Unwanted Pesticides and Old Livestock/Equine Medications’ collection program is funded entirely by its crop input members and through a partnership with the Canadian Animal Health Institute (CAHI).

“The program rotates into various regions across Canada every three years.

Farmers can use the program at no charge to them.

“Farmers wait for this program to come back to their region. We know they are

eager to dispose of these old materials safely without risk to the environment.

“It helps them keep their farms clean and sustainable,” said CleanFarms Executive Director Barry Friesen.

Since the program began more than 10 years ago, 3.7 million kg of unwanted pesticides and 52,000 kg of obsolete farm animal (cattle, horses, goats, poultry) health medications have been collected across the country.

Unfortunately this year’s round up does not include Flagstaff County, but there is a collection site in Castor, on Thursday, Oct. 28, at Meadowland Ag. Chem and in Veteran on Wednesday, Oct. 27, at Richardson Pioneer.

Flagstaff Waste Manager Murray Hampshire says, “The collection for obsolete farm chemicals is technically southern Alberta this year, central and northern next year.”

He has received a number of inquiries about this collection program and says he has referred them to the Castor site for this very popular recycling initiative.

Flagstaff Waste does collect used grain bags and twine under the CleanFarms Ag. Recycling program. See flagwaste.ca for more information on the program.

Sedgewick Dog Park holds grand opening celebration with lots of furry guests

The new Sedgewick Dog Park features lots of space to run around, a bench area with a bulletin board, and even agility training features. The grand opening, held Saturday, Oct. 16, attracted a number of Flagstaff visitors, along with their four-legged family members.

Plenty of people and their four-legged friends dropped by the Sedgewick Dog Park on Saturday, Oct. 16, for the grand opening of the facility.

From an idea earlier in the year, to reality by mid-summer, the dog park is located on the NW end of the Wild Rose Co-op Recreation Centre parking lot, north of the last ball diamond.

Mike and Karen Keogh, along with Lougheed CAO Karen O’Connor, were on hand, along with Sedgewick Mayor Perry Robinson in his final official appearance, and one he was happy to do.

“Talk about qualify of life,” Robinson said, referring to the park, which he said fits well with the outgoing Council’s goals for the town.

Mike Keogh and Cory Gagnon, Facility Manager, did the heavy lifting when it came to picking a spot for the park, getting financial support to build it, and actually doing the work, with the help from volunteers, while Karen Keogh and Karen O’Connor had no shortage of ideas.

Gagnon said this June, “The idea appeals to a lot of people on a lot of levels.”

The two looked at a number of different locations, but are very happy with the spot they settled on, especially with its proximity to the walking

path.

Most of the final costs, around $14,000 came from the fencing, around 750 linear feet. Funding came from Friends of the Rec Board, the Town of Sedgewick, the Sedgewick Lions Club, the Ag. Society, the Rotary Club, and Flagstaff County through the recreation grant.

The park has electricity service for lighting from the Rec Centre, and water during the summer months.

One thing on Keogh’s future wish list for the park was to install some agility training stations,

as well as a bench and bulletin board, and all that has already been built, using all volunteer labour.

The park incorporates a double gate feature, so patrons can come and go without allowing other visitors to escape the fenced area, and even features a separate area for smaller dogs.

Gagnon and Keogh said earlier in the year, “We really look at this as an opportunity, for both our town and the entire area.”

So far the park is very popular with residents and visitors from other

municipalities coming to enjoy it.

Saturday’s host of fourlegged visitors, ranging

from a few inches tall to larger dogs, reinforced the idea that dogs can companionably enjoy

each other and the open area to run and play.

The park will be accessible year round.

Puppy treats were a big hit with all the dogs, and Councillor Stephen Levy was soon surrounded.

Mayor Perry Robinson had nothing but good things to say, about the park and those who had the vision to build it.

The two-legged visitors enjoyed seeing the new park, but it was the four-legged ones who had smiles a mile wide on Saturday.

Sedgewick bowling leagues back in business Double, double toil and trouble...

Jayden Lesmeister Sedgewick bowling has gotten rolling for the 2021/2022 season.

Sedgewick YBC started the season on Oct. 12. Cadence Bartusek bowled the high single of 76, high triple of 189, and high average of 63 for the Bowlasaurous Girls.

Caleb Bartusek scored the high single of 71 for the Bowlasaurous Boys, but Zachary Erickson managed to score the high triple of 203 and high average of 68. River Odegard swept the Bantam Girls with a high single of 88, high triple of 217, and high average of 72. Willow Odegard kept up the trend, sweeping the Junior Girls with the high single of 136, high triple of 395, and high average of 132.

Sedgewick Ladies Afternoon Bowling bowled on Oct. 12. Verna Erickson scored the high single of 217, high triple of 586, and high average of 195.

The team high single of 74 points above average was scored by the Rolling Pins and the high triple of five points above average was scored by the Bowling Bags, both teams are tied

for the lead with five points.

The bowler of the week was Kari Sanders with a score of 39 points above average. Penny Watkins bowled three spares in a row, Kari Sanders bowled a turkey, and Verna Erickson bowled the TV shot.

Sedgewick Mixed Bowling were on the alley from Oct. 12 to Oct. 14. On the ladies’ side: Kari Sanders bowled the high single of 215, while Verna Erickson bowled the high average of 174 and the high triple of 522. On the men’s side: Garry Klein scored the high single of 267, high triple of 667, and the high average of 22.

The team high single of 136 points above average was scored by the Water Buffalos and the high triple of five points above average was scored by Team Gutter. Team Gutter is currently in the lead with five points.

Things are heating up in Daysland as the competition for best scarecrow continues. Purple Scissor Salon has some creepy witch visitors who are obviously up to no good, while The Rusty Daisy has a visitor from Mexico celebrating Day of the Dead. The Daysland Business Association has also decided to ramp things up, celebrating the end of the contest with a Halloween parade, to be held Friday, Oct. 29, starting at 7:30 p.m., with everyone invited to dress up and participate.

OBITUARIES Victor George Morrison

October 28, 1946, to October 11, 2021 Victor George Morrison passed away peacefully on Oct. 11, 2021, after a courageous battle with cancer for almost 14 years.

He was born Oct. 28, 1946, to Albert Victor and

Dora (Pitts) of Shellmouth, Manitoba.

Victor was predeceased by his father in 1974 and mother in 2000. He is lovingly remembered by his daughters Melody (Sean) Sheedy and Tracey (Jeffrey) Wilson; along with their children Joshua (Jarilee) Wilson, Torin Sheedy, Hayden Wilson, Tiffany Sheedy, and Hailey Wilson; his only brother Garry (Cheryl) Morrison; numerous nieces and nephews; along with cherished exchange students hosted over the years.

May 1, 1928, to September 13, 2021 Hobert is survived by his daughter Lisa Boily; son-in-law Rick Boily;

granddaughter Paige and her partner Clint; greatgrandchildren Malachi and Nyah; his three sisters Fern Olson, Karen Woolf, and Wanda and her husband Don Wirth; and several nieces and nephews.

He is predeceased by his partner Mabel, his parents Henry and Thelma Rawe, his two brothers Phillip and Marvin Rawe, and his sister Pat Miller.

It’s not easy to lose someone you love so much, Hobert will be sor-

He was an avid curler from a very young age, starting back in Shellmouth, Manitoba; he also loved to bowl and it showed with his high scoring awards (a perfect score). He loved spending his time with his daughters and grandchildren; he loved to spend time with them and make memories whether it was a cold hockey rink, at a dance competition or recital, or be it a 4-H function.

He loved to travel with his family on father/daughter trips to

Las Vegas, along with trips to Mexico, Antigua, Jamaica, and a trip to Canada’s East Coast, which was a lifelong goal.

Victor was born and raised in Shellmouth, Manitoba, and always shared many stories with his family over the years of the day’s past.

He dabbled with working on the CN Railway and mining, but found his passion with Federated Co-op as a grocery manager where he worked for 37 years.

He started his career in

Victor loved to joke and tease and had a keen sense of humour.

Victor’s family would like to express heartfelt thanks and gratitude to Dr. Rami Abu-Zeidan, Dr. Tim Hanton, and the staff at the Killam Long Term Care Facility for their compassionate care they showed him in the short time he spent with them.

Memorial donations in memory of Victor may be made to the Killam Long Term Care Facility or the Canadian Cancer Society.

Russell, Manitoba, as a butcher by trade and made homes in Coronach, Melville, and Buchanan, SK, before settling in Sedgewick, Alberta in 1986 where he continued working with the Co-op until his retirement in 2006. In 1991 he got recognition of Grocery Manager of the Year from Federated Coop.

He was an avid gardener and loved teaching his daughters his cooking tips and tricks. He was famous for his cabbage rolls by many who knew him.

Hobert Clarence Rawe rowfully missed. He was born in his family home on a farm close to Strome, like most people of that time period. It kept him close to land and nature, which made him come back to Strome to retire. Yet, he was curious about the world.

He lived in many places; Edmonton, Toronto, and Calgary, but he longed for the peace, pace, family, and friends of the countryside he knew well.

I’ve been told h always

remembered people’s names; that he was connected to the community and contributed where he could for his last 30 years.

We also thank the many people who contributed to the well-being of Hobert’s life while living in Strome.

He had a rich and full life, growing to 93 years old, and passed away peacefully with loved ones surrounding him.

OBITUARY

Betty Anne Saruga

1956 to 2021 Betty Anne Saruga of Alliance, AB, passed away unexpectedly on Sept. 26, 2021, at the age of 65 years.

Betty is survived by her loving husband Steve of 47 years; daughters Jody (Shane) Klatt and Staci (Shawn) Charbonneau; sons Travis Saruga and Clinton (Lauren) Saruga; as well as 12 grandchildren: Trishanna, Serena, and Aleah Klatt; Addison, Rylee, and Cole Charbonneau; Jailyn, Eberlee, Bria, and Harver Saruga; and Lucas and Gabrielle Saruga; her mother Adeline Kuefler; five siblings Larry (Sharon) Kuefler, Noreen (Hunter) Armstrong, Iva (Bryan) Hardy, Grant (Elaine) Kuefler, and Peggy (Loren) Erion; and one sister-in-law Karen Kuefler. As well as numerous close friends and family.

Betty was predeceased by her father Fred Kuefler, brother Gerald Kuefler, and mother- and father-inlaw George and Rose Saruga.

Betty was born on April 20, 1956, to Fred and Adeline Kuefler. At a party that her brother Gerald hosted in 1971, she met the love of her life, Steve Saruga. They married in July 1974 and were blessed with four children that they raised on the farm east of Alliance.

After travelling and working in the states, in 1976 they came back to the area and moved to the Roche homestead east of Alliance. They

had the dream to come back to the Saruga homestead, but it was bare land so a house had to be found. In Oct. 1977 they moved the house into its place. They slowly built their farm; becoming grain farmers along with having a few cattle and horses. Mom was a very busy mom. I remember many times having blankets on the grass for us kids to play on as she worked endlessly in her garden. We were always close by with any job that needed to be done. Whether it was sleeping on the floor of the tractor while she was haying or bouncing on the grain truck seat as she was hauling the grain from the combine.

Mom was a dedicated farm wife and her main focus was always family and friends. Mom was all about food, food, and more food. She is known for her famous buns (Betty’s Buns) and carrot cake. And her onion salad was the best!

In the early ‘90s, Morrison petroleum made its home just up the road and for roughly 10 years mom drove the one mile to work everyday, while still helping dad and raising kids.

Over the years grain

farmers faded into cattle producers. As us kids grew up. We all were very active in the Battle River 4-H Club. Mom was very much involved with everything to do with the club. And now, as our kids are members with beef projects, you can always count on seeing mom and dad in the stands.

We always looked forward to seeing the sparkle in her eye and the excitement she expressed as our girls showed their Steers.

Gramma had a big part in helping Jody’s girls pick their steers. Over the many walks they did through the calves over the season gramma made friends with the steers, she felt would be the best choice for the girls. She always had a supportive hug and encouraging words after the show. And, of course, a tearful hug at the end of the sale.

We did many family camping trips. Lots of mountain hikes, no matter the temperature, Calaway Park rides with the grandkids, and tons of those moments around the campfire that she was laughing so hard she had to be reminded to breathe. She was known as the bean bag queen, those boxes

always travelled in the box of the truck. So no matter where our camping adventure took us, a round of bean bags was a must. In the recent years they took up golf and so many times on a Sunday afternoon you would find them on the greens somewhere around the area with their golf sidekicks, Bill and Roylene Bedson.

Mom took pride in her garden, her baking, her cows, badger trapping, gopher hunting, and beating dad at crib. She was the score keeper for every card game we ever played and we always joked that she was cheating when she would win.

Within the last five years dad and mom had been recognized twice for all their hard work with their cattle herd. First was when Canadian Cattleman did an article on them and the benefits of swath grazing in the winter. Mom was super excited she was being published in a well known magazine. The second time was when the Charolais Association voted them the top commercial Charolais breeder. Two amazing accomplishments that she was so proud of. She so loved those cows.

where she became totally complete. I remember her saying, “Having kids was great, but having grandkids is awesome.” She said it was a different type of love.

She said she felt more relaxed so she felt freer to have fun, be silly, and show them a different version of life. She did things with the grandkids that she never did with us and that’s ok, as now they have a ton of their own memories.

And then there were the important things like cooking, working cows, and the love of family that she taught all of us.

Our mom was amazing. She was so full of life. Dad called her an energizer bunny because she always had something on the go.

She truly loved life and all it had to offer. She

will be missed.

We’d like to send a huge thank you to all the EMTs and first responders on scene that day. The quick response and care that was shown to our family in time of crisis was outstanding.

To our family, friends, and community: THANK YOU for your continued support as we remember her and find the path to move forward without our beloved wife, mother, and gramma.

Friends and family gathered at the Saruga farm for an outside Celebration of Life on Oct. 9 led by family friend Brian Chave.

OBITUARY

James Hildus Fossum

August 12, 1935 to October 11, 2021 James Hildus Fossum of Lougheed, Alberta, passed away peacefully at Killam Palliative Care on October 11, 2021, at the age of 86, after several months of declining health and lung

cancer, with his wife and family by his side.

Jim was born in Silver Heights, Alberta, on August 12, 1935, to Agnes and Albert Fossum. Jim was the second child out of four siblings, growing up on a farm outside of Hardisty, Alberta.

At the age of 21, he married his lifelong love, Ann, with whom he celebrated their 64th wedding anniversary in 2021. Jim and Ann continued living on the family farm with their children Dean and Karri, brother Wes (Marg), and their

four children Brian, Brent, Donna, and Darrell.

In the following years they moved all around Alberta, Hardisty, and thereafter moved to Lougheed, Alberta, where they spent the remainder of their marriage and life together.

Jim was a pipeliner, through and through. He loved to work and, many times, was able to with his son and grandchildren, and many lifelong friends he gained along the way. His work took him travelling

Faith Column: The Abundant Life Last week, Canadian actor William Shatner, who played Captain Kirk in the original Star Trek T.V. series, blasted off into space and, in doing so, travelled where very few men have gone before.

What is remarkable about his flight is that he did this at 90 years of age!

That Mr. Shatner undertook this feat at his age, ought not surprise us since, in his 70 year acting career, he has accomplished much. In fact, he

has kept himself so busy with his acting and other endeavors, that it could easily be said that his life has been a very full one.

In a much greater and satisfying way, Jesus promises anyone who follows Him an abundant life, with the abundance that Jesus is speaking about meaning a very full life. A full life, not in the way that Mr. Shatner has lived his life, nor meaning living to 90 years, but a full life for all of eternity.

Making this abundant life that Jesus offers, something that is by far, way better than just going into space for a mere few minutes ever could be.

Because of this, may we take Jesus up on His offer, and have life abundantly!

“The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy.

I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.” John 10:10

across Canada on projects for over 50 years, with Ann always coming to visit him, along with their g r a n d k i d s , throughout all his career. He was a true pioneer of his trade and respected by many fellow workers.

With much talent throughout his family, starting first with a family band with his parents and siblings, and later starting the “Dean Karri Band” with his brother Butch and others, he went on to produce a record with the hit song “Rose Marie.”

Jim would continue his musical career throughout his life, singing and playing guitar at dances, weddings, campfires, and in his home.

He loved singing Karaoke and picking up any instrument he could get his

hands on, leaving family and friends in awe. Jim also had a great talent in writing songs, drawing, carving, and painting.

Jim was a collector of it all: hockey cards, stamps, coins, belt buckles, and etc. He would always stop at any garage sale on his route and enjoyed going through all his treasures.

He also loved jumping at any new endeavour, to his wife’s liking or not, whether it be partnering in a Rhea farm, owning racehorses, flying planes, starting a pottery hobby, building a ski hill at the family farm, and owning various small businesses in Lougheed. He partook in many camping and fishing trips, motorcycle riding, tinkering in the

garage, and casino trips, all with Ann by his side.

A dedicated husband and family man, he was known as Grandpa Jim, and will be missed by many. Survived and remembered by his loving wife Ann; son Dean (Diane); daughter Karri; grandkids Trish (Clayton), Marty, Justin (Lisa), and Jennifer; and greatgrandkids Reegan, Kaleb, Breena, and Anna.

Jim was predeceased by his and Ann’s infant daughter Rose Marie, parents Agnes and Albert, brothers Wesley a n d Butch(Alfred), and sister May. The family would like to thank all the doctors and nurses at Palliative Care in Killam for taking such exceptional care of Jim.
