Drainage Improvement Project underway in Viking Patricia Harcourt Editor

The tender for the 50th Street Drainage Improvement Project was awarded at a special meeting of town council on August 31. There were four tenders received and the project awarded to HCL Services of Vegreville for $307,101 plus GST. The need for drainage improvement on 50 Street was necessitated by the collapse of the original storm drain that is running under Viking Reclamation. Fixing the drainage issues meant digging the new ditch and installing 1,500 mm culverts. The project will extend the existing drainage ditch east to 50 street then south to 59 Avenue, then east joining the new drainage ditch north of the old reservoir behind K&K Autobody. The project has been underway for about two weeks with HCL widening and properly sloping the ditch east of 50 Street to allow proper maintenance and care in the future. As of Friday, the new drainage ditch was almost done having been widened, sloped and the bottom seeded to grass. ‘It will improve the drainage through town,” said town CAO Don McLeod, referring to the east/west drainage in the north part of town. This is all part of the ACP drainage study that is identifying drainage from the surrounding farm lands into the Town of Viking and east to Lake Thomas.
