Killam church looking to host first ever ‘Hallmark Christmas’ event Leslie Cholowsky Editor

The Killam United Church will be hosting a ‘Hallmark Christmas’ event this year, and they are looking for community partners.

Reverend Deanna Cox says, “Each year Sandra Erickson (my admin) and I take time to brainstorm events for the coming program year.

“This year we were focused on community engagement - ways to build fun and opportunities to gather with friends and neighbours. We can’t recall whose idea it actually was, but it was a grand one for sure!”

She says if you’ve ever watched a Hallmark Christmas movie, you would know that at some point in almost all of them the main characters head to the local community Christmas festival where they wander through booths, drink hot chocolate, and engage in some quintessential Christmas fun.

“We thought it would be fun to create our Christmas Festival like in these movies. Just like that the ‘Hallmark Christmas Festival’ was born.”

She says as time grows closer to the Christmas season, they realized that this was too big to pull off on their own.

“So I thought why not offer local businesses and organizations the opportunity to host an activity station in return for the chance to promote all the things that they offer?”

She wants to be clear, this is not a Christmas market. “We are not selling things. It is a place to come, have fun, learn about what our community has to

offer, and maybe make some things to take home.”

She says they’ve shared the idea with all the groups and businesses they could think of, with the hope they would share it even wider.

So far they’ve had five responses, and are looking for more. Participants will be provided with an area to set up a table where they can do anything Christmas related, like crafts, photo opportunities, and more.

Wheat Kings with decisive win over Vegreville on Friday Leslie Cholowsky Editor

The Killam Wheat Kings played two games over the weekend, starting with a home game on Friday, Oct. 6, with a big win 9-1 over the Vegreville Rangers.

The Wheat Kings got out early with a goal from newcomer Landon Scharf, assisted by Adam Child and Nate Gotaas at the 3:08 mark.

Jordy Gagnon put the Wheaties ahead by two with his goal, from Chance Reum.

The Rangers scored their first and only goal late in the period, but Gagnon scored his second of the night, from Keegan McArthur, to put Killam ahead by three going into the second period.

Gotaas scored Killam’s fourth goal, from Aidan Borgel and Kyler Bergseth midway through the third, with their fifth less than a minute later, this time from Kale Hurlburt, from Kobe Charchun and Cade Schatschneider.

Starting the final period up by five, the Wheat Kings scored four more in the third.

Mark Hanson-Torwalt scored early, from Rhett Bergseth, followed by a goal from Bergseth, assisted by Torwalt and Charchun.

Aidan Borgel scored his second of the night, unassisted, and Brett Gagnon wrapped up the scoring from Hurlburt and Hanson-Torwalt.

On Saturday the team travelled to Vermilion for a rematch with the Tigers, where Killam came away with their third win of the season, another 4-3 overtime victory.

The Tigers came out in the first with a single goal in 14 shots, with Marcinkowski standing on his head to keep Killam in the game.

Killam scored early in the second to tie things up from Jeremy Burr, assisted by Child and Scharf.

Reum scored Killam’s first point on the night, unassisted, to make it 2-1 for the Wheat Kings.

The Tigers managed one more goal in the second period to tie things up going into the final period.

Vermilion scored another goal in the third to take a brief lead before Jordy Gagnon scored,

unassisted, to take the game into overtime.

Neither team scored in overtime, leading to a shootout.

Vermilion landed the first goal in the shootout, followed by an answering goal by Reum. Vermilion missed the next shot, with Hurlburt scoring on his shot, getting credit for the game-win-

ning goal.

Marcinkowski faced 46 shots, stopping 43.

The two weekend wins put Killam into second place with six points, behind the St. Paul Canadiens, and two points ahead of the Wainwright Bisons and the Tigers, each tied at four.

Killam’s next game is this coming Saturday,

JOHN’S RANT

The world teeters on edge with limited leadership It’s been a terrible weekend, and I expect nothing good to come from it moving ahead.

While it was Thanksgiving here in Canada, it was terror in Israel.

The Hamas terror group in a very well-coordinated attack raided Israel and to date more than 1,000, mostly civilians, have been killed.

Others, including soldiers, were kidnapped and hauled back to Gaza and raped and tortured and then paraded around for the world to see.

It is expected they will be used as bargaining chips to free Hamas terrorists from Israel prisons.

Israel suffered an egregious lack of information prior to this attack and has declared all out war on Hamas and has been steadily raining missiles down into Gaza, killing not only terrorists but innocent civilians.

So of course immediate condemnation was heard from the civilized world.

But let’s face it… there are no really strong leaders in the Western world.

Can we really trust the direction that might come from President Joe Biden or even worse, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

Not a chance!

It is a chance for high level bureaucrats to shine as they hastily prepare plans and methods to support Israel.

In Canada it won’t be any form of military response because Trudeau and his government, following the lead of previous governments, has neutered the Canadian Forces down to nothing.

Even soldiers stationed on exercises in Lithuania have to supply their own helmets!

In the U.S. there is no speaker of the House, leaving the capital decision makers in turmoil. The U.S. is fiercely divided along political lines between the far right, right, left and far left - each group clambering with their own

agenda.

And many U.S. leaders are more worried, and in some ways correctly, about illegal immigration along the southern border, than events far away such as the war in the Ukraine or Israel’s troubles.

And what of that war?

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zalenskyy had been making his rounds of world capitals seeking support both in financial aid and military hardware to continue his country’s ongoing battle against Russian aggression.

So what does Putin think of this Israeli situation?

He is no friend of Israel and will probably try to keep it escalating.

Russia has the power of veto in the United Nations so expect no help from that source. Bickering and squabbling yes. Solutions no!

With the middle east escalating, will Putin take the opportunity to escalate his fight in Ukraine?

Will China remain on the sidelines or will it take this additional international distraction as its opportunity to invade Taiwan.

I’m sure these are questions making the rounds at very senior levels of government throughout the world as everyone tries to avoid an escalating worldwide conflict that may be inevitable.

And does the west have the leadership, especially in North America, to provide smart, levelheaded leadership in the face of this conflict?

Really, can you blindly throw your faith behind a near senile 80-year-old president, or a Prime Minister who cares more about windmills and solar panels than he does about its destructive impact on his country’s economy?

The world’s in a very precarious place right now and I don’t think it bodes well for a Merry Christmas.

MP Damien Kurek Column: Canada and Ukraine On Friday, September 22, the Canadian Parliament welcomed Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelenskyy to Canada. While this has been making the news because of one of the visitors in the Gallery, I wanted to take a moment to reflect on the address itself before discussing this visitor.

The visit emphasized to me that Ukraine needs Canada's support to defend itself to preserve the idea of nationhood and that the world needs our resources now more than ever.

Borders matter, and Russia's recent aggression threatens to dismantle that fundamental precept of statehood. Borders, and what happens within them, need to be determined by that nation’s own people.

Allowing Russia to flaunt its Soviet Era disregard for this fundamental idea would be a massive setback that would destabilize our world.

This conflict should also call into question how the world looks at security, not just from a military standpoint, but also how energy and food security play a role in conflicts like this. For example, policies that contribute to energy dependence on dictatorships or reduce food production should be rejected outright. In short, Canada is well placed among global democracies to fill the gap that would loosen the grip dictatorships have on energy and food-insecure jurisdictions, something that has been weaponized by countries like Russia.

And for those who question whether or not Canada is on the right side of this war, or if we should be involved in supporting the people of Ukraine, there are three things I would mention.

First, look throughout history and see the consequences of not standing up

against unprovoked territorial aggression.

Not helping Ukraine now, and not supporting their efforts, and history repeats itself would mean instead of sending weapons and resources that help Ukraine defend their borders today, eventually, we'd once again be forced to send soldiers to die on the battlefields of Europe to preserve a rule-based international order and stand up to tyrants. This is not new and is a fundamentally conservative idea, it was in fact Stephen Harper who boldly led the world in telling Putin that Ukraine was off limits and leading the then G8 to remove Russia—and this was at a time when much of the world refused to even acknowledge that as a problem.

Second, Russia has acted like this before in many places, and specifically when it comes to Ukraine, I would encourage you to look up the history of Holodomor. One

of the worst genocides in world history, perpetrated by the Soviet Union exerting control and forcing famine upon Ukraine.

And third, Ukraine and Canada have a massive, shared connection. More than 1.3 million Canadians have Ukrainian heritage, and especially on the prairies, tough agricultural-minded Ukrainian immigrants helped establish Canada as a world-leading ag producer in the early days of westward expansion.

DKR United Church hosting special showing of ‘Operation Lights Out’ Leslie Cholowsky Editor

Later this month, on Saturday, Oct. 21, the Daysland-Killam-Rosalind United Church (DKR) is hosting a special viewing of the film ‘Operation Lights Out,’ with special guest Rick Fee in attendance.

DKR’s Reverend Deanna Cox says, “The film is about a widely unknown humanitarian action by Canadian pilots who delivered tonnes of emergency food to Biafra in the late 1960s.”

In one byline about the movie, it says, “The pilots saved a million lives, and four died in a horrific crash, but few people know the story.”

Cox says she learned about the film through retired teacher Sharleen Chevraux.

Chevraux says she first met Rick Fee, son of Ed and Edna Fee, in Grade 10 in her classroom.

Her family and his have remained in touch through the years when Fee spent 18 years in Africa, the latter as the Bishop of all Presbyterian Churches in Africa. “He has strong links with Africa, and especially Nigeria,” she says, “and he worked hard behind the scenes to get this movie released.”

One of the reviews of the film describes it as: “Biafran children weep with swollen bellies, innocent casualties of a civil war that would kill an esti-

mated two million people between 1967 and 1970. “‘Operation Lights Out: The Story of CANAIRELIEF,’ a new documentary by Nigerian Canadian director Angela Onuora, revisits the horrors of the conflict between the Nigerian government and the breakaway region of Biafra.

“Yet the film also shows the compassion of humanity, in the form of an unlikely group of Canadians who helped pull off one of the greatest miracles in relief history - risking their lives to fly aid into Biafra, which was suffering a famine caused by a Nigerian military blockade.”

Fee, credited as lead researcher for the documentary film, says, “Fifty years ago the world was anxiously watching the final weeks of the Nigerian-Biafran War, though no one knew the war was coming to an end. For three years Canadians – in particular, Canadian Presbyterians – had been attentive, playing key roles in trying to bring about a peace accord and providing humanitarian relief for the starving victims.”

He says as the war raged on, and due in large part to the media coverage of thousands of starving women and children, citizens around the world responded – often disregarding their own government’s positions.

“Canadians chose not to stand by idly. Even prior to the conflict, many communities across Canada had felt

Province announces new capital funding available to Ag Societies Leslie Cholowsky Editor

The Province of Alberta has announced a new capital grant program available to Alberta’s Ag Societies with facility repairs and upgrades.

The new Agricultural Societies Infrastructure Revitalization Program launched last Thursday, Oct. 5. This new capital grant has $2.5 million allocated annual to help update existing facilities.

“Facilities like community halls, ice rinks, and rodeo grounds are integral to the successful operation of Alberta’s Ag Societies. This funding makes sure rural communities can continue to benefit from the events, services, educa-

tional programs, and volunteer opportunities that Ag Societies provide,” says RJ Sigurdson, Minister of Agriculture and Irrigation.

The program will allow Ag Societies to address issues related to aging infrastructure, ultimately extending the useful life of their community buildings.

Applications for eligible projects opened on Oct. 5 and the grant can be used to make improvements including roof repairs, accessibility enhancements, heating upgrades, and window installations.

The East Central Senior Hockey League has nine teams iced up and ready to go when the season starts on Friday, Oct. 27.

This season will see the Coronation Royals, Delburne Outlaws, Forestburg Flyers, Hughenden Jets, Irma Aces, Oyen Eagles, Provost Combines, Sedgewick Sabres, and Stettler Imperials.

All teams will once again be gunning for the Provost Combines, who led the playoffs last year with eight wins and a

single loss, while the Oyen Eagles took the regular season with a 13-1--2 record.

The Sedgewick Sabres had a great finish in the regular season last year, they ended up tied for third place with Stettler, and finished third overall in playoffs.

Forestburg will be looking for some wins this year with some new players, hoping to improve from last year’s eighth-place finish.

The Flyers will start their season Friday, Oct. 27, with a home game against the Delburne Outlaws, while Sedgewick starts on the road, Saturday, Oct. 28, in Hughenden against the Jets.

Hardisty Invitational runs successfully for 49th year Leslie Cholowsky Editor

The 48th Annual Hardisty Invitational took place in Hardisty on Thursday, Oct. 5, with more than 700 racers from schools all throughout the region.

This year’s race was sponsored and organized

by Hardisty Nordic club (Bill/Bev Kropinske) and BAM Fitness (Brittany MacMillan).

While it is the 49th anniversary of the run, it’s only the 48th actual run.

The race took place during the daytime, with students bussed in from schools all over region to participate.

The runners start on the street north of the school, and then, depending on their ages, run part

of the walking trails, with older groups having longer routes.

The morning featured the elementary aged students, with junior high and senior high runners going in the afternoon.

Organizer Brittany MacMillan says that 17 heats were run between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.

MacMillan thanked the many volunteers who made the day a huge success, and also local restaurant Ma and Pa’s for donating the use of their bathroom facilities for the event.

Despite a warm weekend afterward, runners on Thursday braved temperatures in the single digits, and a strong wind that day, but did it all with big smiles on their faces as they enjoyed the event.

The Galahad Ag Society will soon be in the field to harvest their crop, which is a new fundraising project the members undertook.

Joanne McMahon says, “We were able to rent a quarter of land from Allen and Angie Dietz.”

The group also accepted donations of burn off chemicals from BASF, and all fertilizer for the quarter from Richardson Pioneer, as well as seed from Bayer and Blair and Becky Kuefler at BBK Farm.

She says the land was harrowed last fall by Grant Kuefler, then spring burn-off was done

by Landon at Ponto Farms.

Seeding and fertilizing were done by Stuart and Cole at McMahon Farms, with spraying by Garret Jackson. The land was recently swathed by Ross Vincett, and the group is tentatively planning a community harvest for Monday, Oct. 16, weather permitting.

Christmas shoebox program back Leslie Cholowsky Editor

Glenda Strauss of the Camrose Operation Christmas Child says, “It’s that time again when folks pack shoeboxes for Operation Christmas Child, to be sent to lessfortunate children around the world.”

Operation Christmas Child is a division of Samaritan’s Purse that has been collecting and delivering shoeboxes since 1993, with 209 million shoeboxes having been delivered, from more than 170 countries and territories.

Shoeboxes can be packed in person, she says, or online, with the thought that for many recipients, it will be the first and only gift they will receive.

“Not only do they make a big impact to the children, but these boxes often open doors for Samaritan’s Purse to work with local community leaders in identi-

fying and addressing important needs such as clean water, literacy, vocational training for women, and school meals for children.”

She urges anyone interested in participating, “Rally your family and friends to pack a shoebox with a toy (doll, stuffed animal, soccer ball and pump), hygiene items, clothing, and school supplies.

Perhaps even add a photo or card. Re-

member to include a $10 donation (cash, cheque or online) with each box to cover the cost of shipping.

Strauss says, “Last year, Camrose and area sent 2,295 boxes, which added to the 415,072 packed from Canada, and a total of 10.6 million packed worldwide.

Central High Sedgewick Public School holds awards night Leslie Cholowsky Editor Central High Sedgewick Public School (CHSPS) held their annual awards night this past Friday, Oct. 6, with returning graduates from the Class of 2023 as well as top performers in Grades 10 and 11 from the 2022-23 school year.

Top Athlete Award, sponsored by CHSPS, went to Keeley Ehnes and Aidan Borgel.

Ehnes also received the Math 30-2 Award, the Grade 12 First Class Honours award, the Top Academic Grade 12 Award, and the Governor General Academic Medal.

Borgel also received the English 30-2 Award, and was a co-recipient of the Jacob Lazarick Memorial Scholarship.

Cayla Polege received multiple awards on Friday, including the English 30-1 Art Eastly Memorial Award, sponsored by The Community Press.

Battle River Community Foundation to honour 100+ Women of Flagstaff County at upcoming Community Builders dinner Editor

The Battle River Community Foundation (BRCF) will be holding its annual Community Builders Dinner this Nov. 4 in Killam, this time honouring the 100+ Women Who Care in Flagstaff County.

Each year the BRCF celebrates individuals or couples “Who have lived their lives with a commitment to serving their community.” This year, for the first time ever, the Foundation will honour a group.

BRCF says the dinners serve a twofold purpose. “It’s so integral for the success of the BRCF to raise money for worthy local causes.” Each Community Builder dinner held creates a fund named for the honouree, which continues granting in their name, honouring their contributions to their communities forever. The interest earned by the fund is used to support charitable organizations and community groups who provide programs and services to their communities.

Each ticket sold includes a $50 donation to the BRCF, and a live auction held that night also raises funds. Those

funds are then used to create the new fund.

In a sense, BRCF and the 100+ Women are very similar on the surface.

Each member or team commits $400 each year to be donated on a quarterly basis to one of four (or more) local nominees directly, with 100+ per cent of the funds flowing to the successful nominee. In its four years, the 100+

The Battle River Community Foundation works a little differently, but to the same purpose. The BRCF was created when a group of individuals wanted to leave a permanent endowment for their community, that would exist in perpetuity. Funds donated to the BRCF are invested, and their earnings are used to give back to the community year after year.

Chevraux says she’s hoping that some of the organizations who have received funding from the 100+ Women

Like the 100+ Women, the BRCF also supports many Flagstaff County groups and organizations.

She says, “While the 100+ Women give every cent every time, the BRCF creates funds that give in perpetuity.”

She says the funds raised that night will ensure that the good work being done by the 100+ Women goes on forever.

There are just over 500 tickets being sold for the event, available in each community in Flagstaff. Tickets are $100+ per person, $50 of which is a direct donation to creating the new fund that will honour 100+ Women Who Care in Flagstaff County in perpetuity.

We have much to be thankful for.

On Wednesday, Trudy Lamoriss and I went to the Buddy Holly Tribute at the Jenny and Peter Lougheed Theatre in Camrose. We really enjoyed it. The song “Oh, Donna” was dedicated to a Donna, who was

behind us somewhere. It turned out to be Donna Smith, long-time teacher in Alliance. We had a chat at intermission, and it turns out that Donna knew Trudy’s parents. Trudy also met two other acquaintances.

Tom Spady finished his time on earth this week.

He had been in the extended care in Castor for some time. Saturday there was a celebration of his life at the family ranch with the gathering taking place in the sales ring. Tom

leaves daughters Sherri and Debbie and son Craig and their families, brother Roger Spady, sister Cathy Schaffner, and a large extended family.

The church service at the United Church was led by Laura Towers who used a sermon prepared by Rev. Steve Haughland. There were 12 in attendance since many were away for the weekend.

Lorne Goodrich and Chris were in town last week for a visit, the last trip before tucking the mo-

torhome in for the winter.

They now live in Millet, where Lorne has just taken on the presidency of the local Legion.

At the Legion meeting on Thursday, plans for the Nov. 11 Remembrance Day service were initiated with Roger Spady taking the lead.

They also donated to the museum and the Christmas Sharing for Flagstaff.

The Argyle Branch of Alberta Women’s Institutes meets on Wednesday as usual in the meeting room

of the recreation centre.

We are planning a trip to the Alberta Legislature when it is in session. Jackie Lovely is waiting to hear from the Speaker of the House as to when we should come. We don’t need the drama of the Ottawa Speaker error.

I had a wonderful weekend, lots to be thankful for.

On Saturday six friends joined me for dinner at my house and we played a vicious card game of Steel until my bedtime.

On Sunday I was invited

to join the meal in the field with Blair Kuefler and crew, which consisted of Karen Kuefler and her mom, Rose Mahduik, Blairs’ sisters, Andrea and Gillian, Beckie Kuefler and her folks Tom and Barb McCorkle of Berwynn, Cliff Moroziuk of Mundare (Karen’s fiancée), Ethan Bownes, combine operator, and children Max and Paige Kuefler. It was lovely.

Monday I had more guests coming to finish off the turkey and ham.

Killam Long Term Care’s Dementia Unit using art in creative ways to help keep patients secure Leslie Cholowsky Editor

The Killam Long Term Care Dementia Unit is displaying some amazing art pieces that not only serve to showcase rural scenery, but also help keep patients safe.

Killam Health Centre Site Administrator Lora Maygard says that covering the doors of the unit with painted murals helps camouflage the exits, and helps calm the agitation patients can feel when they see doors.

It also prevents them from hovering near the doors if they get the idea to leave.

This spring and summer the facility engaged landscape artist Glen Collin to develop seven murals that not only brighten the living space, but also have some very unique personalized touches.

One very special bookshelf not only disguises the doors, but also features something special from every resident living in the unit when the mural was painted. There’s a box of turtles, a cribbage board, a button jar, and even

someone’s former pet dog settled on a lower shelf.

The final piece stretches the length of a hallway, with fields of golden wheat, a slough with ducks and geese, and some fisherman, a farm scene with combines, a homestead, and there’s even some wildlife hidden here and there, for those with sharp eyes.

Collins has created a visual feast for the eyes, and has surely enhanced the lives of both residents and workers through his art.

The Campus of Caring unit also features a window mural, created for the grand opening of Chickadee Lane, painted by local artist Marlaina Eldey.

She says, “It took me three days to create, using acrylic paints and acrylic paint pens.

“While working, I got to see firsthand how good the staff were to the residents, the activities they got up to, and had so many residents and staff stop to talk to me as I painted.

“It was a great experience, and my hope is that the mural will bring vibrancy and a sense of welcome invitation to everyone who enters!”

This special mural features one item honouring a resident in place when it was painted, including a box of Turtles, a cribbage board, a button jar, and even a former pet, nestled among the shelves.

OBITUARIES Carol Lucille Waldorf

(August 4, 1938 October 1, 2023) Carol Waldorf of Camrose, beloved mother, sister, aunt, grandmother, great-grandmother, and loyal friend of many, passed away on Sunday, Oct. 1, 2023, at her home at the age of 85.

Carol was born on August 4, 1938, in Daysland to Mike and Rose Zwack.

Carol’s early childhood was spent on the family farm South of Daysland with siblings Vonnie,

Roger, and Allan. It was growing up on that farm that allowed her to develop her thoughtful and nurturing nature. She helped take care of the animals and plants and later used those skills on her own farm.

As a child, Carol attended Daysland school.

After high school, she graduated from the nursing program at Vermillion College. She then went on to work at the Daysland Clinic and Hospital for several years.

Carol was married in 1960 and settled on a farm North of Daysland, where they ran a mixed cattle and grain operation. Not only was Carol able to use her innate caregiving spirit to grow her farm, she was also able to raise six beautiful daughters; Val, Jackie,

Shelley, Annette, Debbie, and Shauna. As if Carol was not busy enough taking care of the growing needs of her family and farm, she was also an active member in the community, involved with Royal Purple, 4-H, Brownies, curling, bowling, and her daughters’ school activities.

In 1994 Carol started a new chapter in her life and moved to Camrose. There she continued to engage with her community by volunteering. Festival of Trees and Big Valley Jamboree were just some of the organizations that Carol gave her time to.

When she wasn’t giving back to the community Carol was giving to her family. All her grandchildren rave about the massive spread of food that

Grandma would put out even for a short visit.

Candy dishes would be filled and Carol’s specialty, Angel Food cake, would be on the table in a moment’s notice. Even the neighbourhood Blue Jays and cats would come to Carol’s house for daily treats.

Quick-witted, sharp, nurturing, and generous until the end. Carol Waldorf was a kind soul who will be sincerely missed by her family, friends, neighbours and community.

Left to cherish her memory are her children Valerie (Robert) Volk of Heisler, Jackie Volk of Camrose, Shelley (John) Vander Woude of Camrose, Annette (Lyle) Zimmer of Edmonton, Debbie (Daryl) Zimmer of Camrose, and Shauna (Brad) Zimmer of

FAITH COLUMN Who’s driving?

When I lived in Calgary there was a spot that I liked to go and read my Bible. I would get up early and go there for the Sunrise. One time I was at an intersection early in the morning and a car was just sitting there with no driver. It wasn’t moving, it had run out of gas or something.

The thought came to my mind, “How weird to see a car sitting at an intersection with no driver.” Then another thought came to

my mind, “Don’t become like this car, driverless.

Make sure the Lord is always in the driver seat.”

It was neat because I was going through some tough times spiritually, and at times didn’t know if I believed in God anymore. That summer I dug into the Bible more and the result was that my faith was deepened.

Do you find yourself like a car out of gas with no driver? Have the struggles of life been too hard,

and you feel as though you are done? I can tell you that there is someone who can help, and if you give ownership of your life to him, he will fill your tank, and get into the driver seat. This involves trust, but it is worth it.

Proverbs 3:5-6 says, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.”

Well hello folks. I hope your belly is full of turkey and all the fixings, ham, pumpkin, and apple pie and you enjoyed all the wonderful socializing, reminiscing, and picture taking.

We are getting ourselves ready for the upcoming holiday season, but first we have to survive the Halloween excitement. Decorate your yard and make it cute or rather scary, with big blow up creatures and machines that simulate creepy vocal sounds and flashing lights.

I know adults get a kick out of all the interesting decorations too and they enjoy diving into their kids candy for their favourite sweets.

There are still a few ladies that make those fabulous homemade popcorn balls lathered in that fantastic sticky sugar. Oh my, they are so yummy and all the adults know where these lovely ladies live. I hope you continue to make the balls because the adults appreciate them even more than the children... hahaha!

I checked the big dictionary for the meaning of the word "Thanksgiving." It means the art of giving thanks as to God, an expression of gratitude. It can be a public celebration, in recognition of divine favour or a day set aside as a celebration."

Canadians celebrate the second Monday of October and the Americans celebrate on the fourth Thursday of November. It is thought of as the official start to the American Holiday season. To the Americans the November holiday is often more important than Christmas Day. Interesting, eh?

We can be thankful we are not involved in the war involving the Ukraine and Russia or the despicable war between Israel and Hames, the militant Islam group. It is always the innocent civilians that suffer the ravages of war. The elderly, the women and the children.

We pray that this wretched war will soon be over.

Our community has much to be thankful for. A

huge fire was started by an overheated ball bearing on a header from a combine.

The horrendously strong winds, on Sunday night, just fanned the flames and the fire became out of control, ravaging standing crops and lighting up bushes and trees in its path.

The fire was past the old ski hill and near Tom and Sherrie Hughes’ log cabin home, up on a hill.

The Hughenden, Czar, and Amisk fire departments were the first on the scene and later followed by the Hardisty fire department and volunteers.

Tom and Sherrie Hughes were so grateful for their presence and their professional expertise. Quelling the flames was not an easy task.

Miraculously, farmers arrived with tractors and discs, Remedy Oilfield and Reliance Energy appeared with bulldozers. Other neighbours and farmers appeared with water trucks, plus other people came just to lend a hand.

That is a community in action. A community that cares and is willing to help their fellow man.

Sherrie Hughes is our Hardisty United church part-time Lay Minister and she is positive that, I quote, "The good Lord had our backs and you ladies and gentlemen had our front!

God bless all of you!"

I spoke with Tom on Monday night and they had a full-time watch going on. Sparks are still igniting small fires and the men are having to put them out. Exhaustion is setting in, but they are still eagle-eyed and keeping on top of the situation.

So folks, make sure you have a tote or box with your valuable information and that you have a fire extinguisher in your home and your car. You never know when you have to put out a fire or have to evacuate your home at a moments notice. Be safe and be smart.

On Friday, Hardisty had a large cross country race.

There were 686 racers from all over the BRSD who participated to race the trails around Hardisty. The race was hosted by Hardisty Nordic club (Bill/Bev Kropinske) and BAM Fitness.

The Arena, Ma and Pa Restaurant provided nourishment and bathroom fa-

cilities.

This is a big deal for a town of only approximately 500 people. The local business' informed me that they really noticed the influx of customers. It was suggested to me that in future we should generate more space and advertise the race more. Maybe we could get more help, more media coverage and maybe some extra sponsors.

Congratulations to all the runners and all the organizers, volunteers, and dedicated parents. This puts Hardisty on the county map. You are appreciated.

thers. His grandparents are Ken and Donna Buelow. Ken and Marlene Buelow are the greatgrandparents living in

Hardisty. Brixley, age three, batted her big blue eyes and very seriously told Marlene Buelow, who was cradling the baby that,

"Zayn is ours and you cannot keep the baby." From the mouths of babes.
