Christmas shoebox program back Leslie Cholowsky Editor
Glenda Strauss of the Camrose Operation Christmas Child says, “It’s that time again when folks pack shoeboxes for Operation Christmas Child, to be sent to lessfortunate children around the world.” Operation Christmas Child is a division of Samaritan’s Purse that has been collecting and delivering shoeboxes since 1993, with 209 million shoeboxes having been delivered, from more than 170 countries and territories. Shoeboxes can be packed in person, she says, or online, with the thought that for many recipients, it will be the first and only gift they will receive. “Not only do they make a big impact to the children, but these boxes often open doors for Samaritan’s Purse to work with local community leaders in identi-
fying and addressing important needs such as clean water, literacy, vocational training for women, and school meals for children.” She urges anyone interested in participating, “Rally your family and friends to pack a shoebox with a toy (doll, stuffed animal, soccer ball and pump), hygiene items, clothing, and school supplies. Perhaps even add a photo or card. Re-
member to include a $10 donation (cash, cheque or online) with each box to cover the cost of shipping. “If you’d rather, you can very easily pack a shoebox online at www.packabox.ca. Strauss says, “Last year, Camrose and area sent 2,295 boxes, which added to the 415,072 packed from Canada, and a total of 10.6 million packed worldwide. “This year, the goal for Camrose and area is 2,500.” Collection is Nov. 13 to 19 at Century Meadows Baptist Church (3720-66 Street) in Camrose. Central High Sedgewick Public School holds awards night Leslie Cholowsky Editor Central High Sedgewick Public School (CHSPS) held their annual awards night this past Friday, Oct. 6, with returning graduates from the Class of 2023 as well as top performers in Grades 10 and 11 from the 2022-23 school year. Top Athlete Award, sponsored by CHSPS, went to Keeley Ehnes and Aidan Borgel. Ehnes also received the Math 30-2 Award, the Grade 12 First Class Honours award, the Top Academic Grade 12 Award, and the Governor General Academic Medal. Borgel also received the English 30-2 Award, and was a co-recipient of the Jacob Lazarick Memorial Scholarship. Cayla Polege received multiple awards on Friday, including the English 30-1 Art Eastly Memorial Award, sponsored by The Community Press. She received the Social Studies 30-1 award, sponsored by the Royal Canadian Legion, Sedgewick Branch. Polege also was awarded the Math 30-1 award, sponsored by Wild Rose Co-op Association. She received the Physics 30 Award, sponsored by Sunshine Schnoodles, the Chemistry 30 Award, sponsored by
Guardian Drugs, Killam, and the Biology 30 Award, sponsored by Wild Rose Coop Association. Adam Maertz received the Social Studies 30-2 award, sponsored by TnT Instrumentation, and also the Industrial Arts 30 award, sponsored by Killam Home Hardware. Owen Pasztor received the Math 31 award, sponsored by Andreassen Borth. He also received the Jennifer Dammann Memorial Award, sponsored by the Dammann family for those entering the field of education. Pasztor also received the Alberta Teachers Association award, as well as the George Jenvey Scholarship. Pasztor also won the Darrell and Winnie Goodrich Scholarship, sponsored by the Battle River Community Foundation-Goodrich Family fund for two graduates from the Hardisty area. Pasztor also shared the Jacob Lazarick Memorial Scholarship. Rebecca Toews earned the Math 30-3 award sponsored by Prairie Skye Farms. Kelsey Price earned the Science 30 award, sponsored by the Iron Creek Veterinary Hospital. She also earned
the Phys Ed 30 award, sponsored by Lohr Oil Services. Price was also awarded the Citizenship Award, sponsored by the Order of the Eastern Star, given to a graduate who has shown outstanding citizenship, as chosen by CHSPS staff. William Pedersen earned the Art 30 award, sponsored by the Battle River Art Club. Hunter Polege and Eli Ryan shared the Foods 30 award, sponsored by Killam Subway. Cooper Bahm earned the Arnett & Burgess Sponsorship program award, which recognizes a student with a stellar determination to bring fresh passion and commitment to the energy sector field. He also received the Lindseth Holdings Scholarship, given to a student entering the mechanics field, and sponsored by the Battle River Community Foundation-Lindseth family fund. Branston Freadrich received the Business Award, sponsored by ATB Financial. Brody McDowell received the RAP Award, sponsored by Kal Tire, and given to the graduate with the highest achievement in the Registered Apprenticement Program. Jayce Johannesson received the Technology Award, sponsored by the Happy Riders Society. Lakeisha Doody received the Lauren Brodie Scholar-
ship, sponsored by the Brodie family, and given to a female student involved in sports. Carter Brausen received the Cyril and Marguerite Drever award, sponsored by the Battle River Community Foundation - Drever Family fund. Kassidy McMahon received the Darrell and Winnie Goodrich Scholarship, sponsored by the Battle River Community Foundation - Goodrich Family fund. McMahon was also awarded the Katelynn Berrecloth School Spirit Award, sponsored by the Berrecloth family for a student involved in Student’s Union and school sports. Reegan Dempsey received the CHSPS Parent Council Scholarship, given to a Grade 12 student who attends all their classes, perseveres through any circumstances, is dedicated to helping others, and who lets their individuality and uniqueness shine through. Hannah Thomas was given the Award for Academic Excellence, a onetime award sponsored anonymously, given to a student from Killam who has achieved academic excellence and is pursuing a post-secondary education. Grade 12 grads earning Honours Certificates were Branston Freadrich, Kassidy McMahon, Owen Pasztor,
Cayla Polege, and Kelsey Price. Grade 10 honour certificates were given to Sydney Bullee, Kaily Busenius, Ethan Clark, Lucas Docksteader, Ethan Edwards, Falon Garside, Adison Grove, Allie Kelndorfer, Baylee Oberg, and George Rosiechuk. First Class Grade 10 Honours were given to Ava Bergseth, Caylin Brumwell, Emily Goodrich, and Taylor Price.
