No stone left alone this Remembrance Day thanks to Daysland School students

Grade 8 and 9 students from Daysland School visited the Daysland Cemetery on Friday, Nov. 4 along with members of the Daysland Legion in a ʻNo Stone Left Aloneʼ ceremony. After a short memorial, students honoured the graves of every veteran buried in Daysland by placing a poppy on the headstone. See full story Page 10.

Alberta Health Services (AHS) announced on Friday, Nov. 3, that the Daysland Health Centre will continue to be without overnight on-site physician coverage Monday to Thursday through November.

“The Emergency Department will be closed from 10 p.m. to 7 a.m.

Monday to Thursday due to a lack of physician coverage.”

Weekend coverage for the emergency department is in place.

AHS says the emergency department will continue to be open seven days a week from 7 in the morning to 10 at night Monday through Thurs-

day, then 24 hours/day Friday through Sunday.

“Patients presenting to the ED during the hours of closure will be referred to emergency departments in surrounding communities or to the local medical clinic for follow-up with a family physician, as appropriate.

“EMS will divert patients to facilities in Camrose or Killam for emergency care, as needed.

“AHS continues to work toward resuming regular operating hours.“ Daysland’s Emergency Department also operated through October with no overnight services available Monday through Thursday.

Hunt for new CAO over in Sedgewick with new hire Sedgewick Town Council made an announcement on Wednesday, Nov. 2, that Sean Mascaluk will become the next Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) for the Town of Sedgewick.

Mayor and Council acknowledged the support by past CAO, Jim Fedyk, interim CAO Debra Moffatt, and all staff during the recruitment process.

Mayor Stephen Levy said, “Council engaged in a CAO recruitment process to secure an individual who will continue to refocus attention on quality service, investment attraction, and greater collaboration and engagement with residents and regional stakeholders.

“We were pleased with the quality of all applicants but felt Mr. Mascaluk possessed skills and leadership experience

that will prove complimentary to our community.”

Mascaluk possesses rural roots and a strong technical background and experience in municipal management.

Over the last several years he has performed large-scale project management oversight and held an executive leadership role that involved engagement with a number of municipal Councils.

“I look forward to the opportunity to work with Council and the quality team in Sedgewick,” he says.

“Not only does my

family appreciate the rural and recreational amenities of the region, but I feel strongly there exists considerable potential and opportunities for

the Town and its partners.”

Mascaluk’s transition has commenced, and a start date is anticipated early in the New Year.

Sean Mascaluk has been hired as Sedgewickʼs new CAO. He is expected to start early in 2023.

ECSHL games postponed due to weather Leslie Cholowsky Editor

The Forestburg Flyers and Hughenden Jets faced defeat on Friday, Nov. 4 in East Central Senior Hockey League action, while the Irma Aces and Sedgewick Sabres games were postponed and will be rescheduled.

The Flyers travelled to Castor on Friday, to take on the Coronation Royals.

There was no scoring in the first period, and Coronation was first on the scoreboard in the second in the first minute of the period.

A power play goal at the five-minute mark put the Royals ahead by two going into the final.

Coronation scored its third point before Forestburg responded mid-period with a power play goal from Bobby Hunker, unassisted, then another power play goal from Cory Lohr, assisted by Michael McTavish and Ben Roth.

The refs handed out two game misconducts for fighting in the second period, and a bunch of penaltys for the Royals in the third.

Also on Friday, the Jets landed in Oyen for a highscoring 9-5 loss against the Eagles.

Oyen scored in the last minute of the period to go ahead 4-1.

Oyen scored its fifth goal midway through the second period, answered immediately with another goal from Laporte, this time from Cody Johnson to make it 5-2.

Oyen tucked two more goals in the second to end the period with a 7-2 lead.

The Eagles scored their eighth goal in the first minute of the third period, but the Jets powered forward, with a goal from Ashton Johannesson, from Dallas Swanson and Johnson, to make it 8-3, then another from Logan Morrison, assisted by Laporte and Kelly Piecharka, to make it 8-4. A third, on the power play, from Braden Crone, assisted by Johnson, made it 8-5 for Oyen.

The Eagles scored once more late in the period to make it a 9-5 final.

This coming weekend will see Oyen travel to Irma to take on the Aces, and Sedgewick travelling to Hughenden to take on the Jets. Forestburg will play host to the Stettler Imperials on Saturday, Nov. 12.

Wheat Kings’ rough patch continues Leslie Cholowsky Editor

The Killam Jr. B Wheat Kings only had one game this weekend, a rematch of last week’s game against the Vermilion Tigers.

The Wheat Kings travelled to Vermilion on Sunday, Nov. 6.

Jordan Gagnon put the Wheaties out ahead with a goal in the first period, from Kaden Vanpetten, then Trey Forster put them ahead by two, assisted by Ty Millgate.

Vermilion scored twice after that, to tie the game going into the second period.

Both teams were held scoreless, with Killam netminder Ty Marcinkowski fending off 12 shots from the Tigers.

There was a slew of penalties early in the third period, with Killam racking up 20 penalty minutes total. The Tigers held the Wheat Kings scoreless through the third period, but scored three more goals to take the 5-3 win for the night.

Wheat Kings Head Coach Bob Charchun says, “We are just not playing well right now; Jekyll and Hyde, to be honest.”

After the team’s first loss Oct. 21 against the St. Paul Canadiens, the Wheat Kings have struggled.

“We were doing everything right the first five games and now we are struggling to find out game,” Charchun says.

“We are doing very few things right and we are cheating the game a bit and not putting the work in. It’s caught up to us here early in the season. We are getting chances to score but not converting our opportunities. We need to find a way to score.”

As the December cutoff approaches, Charchun says, “Many guys have had some opportunity to showcase themselves with guys hurt and suspended.

It’s a great chance for us as coaches to evaluate their game and see growth early in the season.”

He says the coaching staff is looking inwards critically as well. “As I’ve told the guys, our coaches have to be better too as we are obviously not having

the team ready to play games.

“We just have to all take our share of the responsibility and try to limit the costly mistakes that are hurting us right now.”

I believe in our group and I know we will work through this rough spot; it’s a long season.

The Wheat Kings will play this Thursday, Nov. 10, in Wainwright where they will face the Bisons for the first time this season. They travel to Onion Lake on Saturday, Nov. 12.

The Wheat Kings return home on Friday, Nov. 18, where they will welcome the Vegreville Rangers.

There is a Legion meeting on Thursday night to put the finishing touches on the Remembrance Day service. After the service there will be a potluck lunch, to which everyone is welcome.

There are several meetings before Thursday.

Monday is the Ag Society Annual meeting. Tuesday

is a Library Board meeting in the morning and a United Church Board meeting in the evening.

On Wednesday the Women’s Institute meets in the afternoon. Friday is Remembrance Day. That should fill up a week.

Some of us planned to go to the Bailey Theatre on Wednesday to the presentation of “The Cruel Sea,” but the weather was so bad we decided it was best to stay home.

The weather was lovely on Friday so Karin McCracken, Vickie Cloakey,

Donna Chalifoux, and Donna Ingin attended the Bethany Group 100th anniversary and Awesome Music Program presentation at the Norseman Inn. It was excellent. We learned how music therapy can get through to patients with Alzheimer's or dementia because the words and music are stored in a part of the brain that isn’t affected by the disease.

Music has an immediate and positive effect on our emotional state.

Happy music can relieve stress and relieve depres-

sion.

Listening to a favourite song can take one back to a happy place or trigger great memories. Behind every song there is a story, first of all put forth by the song writer and then the story of the listener as the memory was created.

There were 14 in church on Sunday for a hymn singing service. We sure do have lots of favourite hymns.

I could really appreciate the power of singing together especially after the Awesome Music Pro-

gram that I attended on Friday. Betty Spady was back again to play for us.

She spent several days with her brother following his surgery. They enjoyed the time together.

Often we don’t get time to spend with our siblings.

Donna Chalifoux spent a few days with her sister Shirley Cook in Edmonton this past week.

I just had phone visits with my brothers. I also had a nice phone chat with Mary Wold.

Time to hand the reins of remembrance

I was so touched by the ‘No Stone left Alone’ program that took place in Daysland Cemetery last Friday, with the Grade 8 and 9 students and Daysland Legion members. They treated the veteran’s graves with such reverence and respect.

It occurred to me as we look back at the last year, we have lost another few of our wartime veterans. We’ve lost the opportunity to hear firsthand stories about war, about service, and sometimes, about sacrifice.

As we move towards Remembrance Day, we take the time to remember and say a silent thanks to those who gave the ultimate sacrifice in the name of our freedom and way of life.

We say, to fewer and fewer, our loud and heartfelt thanks, for their service in the war.

We say to those who served in peacetime, thank you, too, for your service to uphold Canadian values.

As more and more of our World War II veterans pass on, it is up to the next generation to honour their sacrifice, and to honour their service.

The local legions are in need of members, and it is time for the next generation to step forward and take up the banner of remembrance to honour those who stepped forward to serve.

What we don’t take the time to remember, we may be doomed to repeat.

In today’s day and age our armed forces are so depleted that I’ve read that we will need to withdraw from all obligations to train the necessary recruits, assuming they even step forward to serve.

And while our youth are not turning up in droves to sign up, it doesn’t mean that they are without obligation or willingness to remember, and to honour, those who went before them.

But I think the Legion, too, has to define a role for this generation, and the next. Those whose fathers didn’t serve, who didn’t serve themselves, but whose grandfathers or great-grandfathers may have seen service.

If we don’t find a way to engage the next generation locally, we run the danger of having our local, meaningful, Remembrance Day ceremonies grow into dispassionate services that mean everything and nothing, and fail to acknowledge the real and meaningful effort given directly by members of our community.

Tone deaf tax hikes from Liberals On Wednesday, Chrystia Freeland finally admitted what Conservatives have worried about for years; Canada is falling into economic despair. This is the result of the Liberals’ reckless spending, the absurd taxation of Canadians, and the record inflation that has swept through Canada from coast to coast to coast. And still the Bank of Canada is struggling to bring down inflation at 6.9 per cent, it is more than triple the target set by the Bank of Canada.

In a flagrant display of hypocrisy, Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland stated in reference to aiding Canadians through the upcoming financial crisis, “if we were to try to do that, we would be pouring fuel on the inflationary flames, we would just be making the Bank of Canada’s job harder and ensuring that inflation lasted longer and that rates went up even higher.” In other words, the Liberals spent all of the “fiscal firepower” that Minister Freeland was boasting about earlier.

The Liberals’ over-spending has not only exacerbated the inflationary crisis and created a recession but, now it has left the Government in a position where they cannot help Canadians through the next crisis, one the Liberals contributed to.

As Canada’s economic situation worsens, analysts and economists from the major banks are calling for a recession in the coming months. Yet, the Liberal Government has doubled down on its failed fiscal policies that have left Canadians scrabbling to pay their bills. One of the main culprits of the Liberal-induced affordability crisis is the carbon tax, especially when it comes to groceries and nutritious food. It is economic despair served three ways. Farmers have had to pay more for fuel in the production of food, then pass the excess costs on to merchants, who in turn, pass the extra costs on to Canadians who are just trying to provide nutritious food for their families.

It didn’t have to be this way. The Liberal Government could have curbed their spending and worked to avoid supply chain issues. Instead, the Liberals played politics with Canada’s natural resource sector by its imposition of the Carbon Tax, sabotaging crossborder trade with the rights infringing trucker mandate, and leaving Canadians to flip the bill for all the debts their government has incurred. A Poilievre Government would stick to basics; enable Canadians to succeed by eliminating gatekeepers and needless red tape, repealing the Carbon Tax and other inflationcausing policies that will no-doubt become the legacy of Justin Trudeau, and adopt responsible spending policies such as capping inflation-causing government spending with a Pay-As-You-Go Law requiring the government to find a dollar of savings for each new dollar of spending.

Well hello folks. Winter has reared its ugly head, along with the dreaded time change. I hope you are all coping and you have your yards winter-proofed.

We recently had my husband’s family visit from Edmonton along with his nephew and family from Ottawa.

They wanted to tour the Matthews farm so the four children could learn something about their heritage of their grandparents and great-grandparents.

It was miserable weather, but they were all bundled up to walk about the farmyard and then have a tour in trucks and quads.

These were definitely "city" kids and they were introduced to the cattle in the yard; the cows, calves, and bulls.

Our son and my husband explained the differences between cows, bulls, and etcetera and also where your hamburger and steaks come from as well as the difference between dairy and beef cattle.

You might be smirking and thinking, “Really?” But think about it, if someone dropped you off in a big city would you know how to ride the subway, figure out the bus system, figure out what highways to use to get your destination, and how to traverse the underground and aboveground pedways? It is a totally different world isn't it?

The kids, aged 11 to 16, were totally taken by our overly friendly golden retriever Rosie and our son's cattle dog.

Those kids threw

sticks, they ran with the dogs, they hugged them, and loved them to death.

Personally I think they were more interested in our four farm cats and the dogs than farm history.

The young boy managed to scoop up farm cats that are not that used to being handled and brought them into the house. I had visions of these outside cats going crazy and hiding under couches, beds, and pooping all over.

But no, no! These kids were like dog and cat whisperers. I think animals must sense when young kids love them.

The day ended with snacks and the fireplace roaring while we chatted and laughed. I am sure when they all left that the kids were all asleep before they hit Highway 13.

I know the dogs were out cold and slept like logs after all the fun and exercise they got that day. It goes to show

you that there is such a bond between humans and their pets.

We are experiencing a successful hunting season and we have had hunters shoot moose and elk. We just tasted some elk hamburgers that were gifted to us

and they were darn yummy.

I wish I had more news for you. I see that Bill Whitelock posted on Facebook that he has been transferred to Wainwright Hospital for rehabilitation. Best wishes Bill. You could

Tribute to Canada’s only female amputee from WWI For more than 100 years, women have been an integral part of Canada’s military history. During the First World War, Madeleine Jaffray (1889 – 1972), served as a nurse overseas and returned home missing a limb.

Jaffray was born in Chicago, Illinois and moved with her family to Galt, Ontario, as a child. She trained as a nurse, and soon after the outbreak of the First World War, enlisted with the French Red Cross. Nursing was virtually the only area where women could experience the war at the front.

Jaffray went overseas in December 1915 and spent 10 months working in a military hospital near Bordeaux, France, before being transferred to a mobile ambulance unit in Adinkerke, Belgium.

This area was only a few kilometres from the front lines and Jaffray recounted how the unit was bombed. "I

was coming out of a covered passage in one of the wards when a bomb fell right in front of me," she said. This severely wounded her foot which led to an amputation, making her Canada’s only female war amputee from the First World War. The Nursing Director wrote to Jaffray’s mother, “At one o’clock last night, the hospital was bombarded by German aviators and she [Jaffray] was wounded in the foot by a piece of shrapnel from one of the bombs…It is a bad wound.”

A week after the incident, Jaffray was awarded the Croix de Guerre by the French military for her bravery, with an additional star for her services, though she felt that all the nurses in her unit were equally deserving of it. She was the first Canadian woman to be awarded this medal.

After the war, she worked at the Dominion Orthopaedic Hospital on Christie Street in Toronto. She later moved to Edmonton with her husband and continued her nursing career, working for the Victorian Order of Nurses and was a member of the Overseas Nurses Association.

She also became the only female war amputee member of The War Amps, an organization started by amputee veterans returning from the First World War to provide each other with support and adapt to their new reality as amputees.

Annelise Petlock was born a left arm amputee and grew up in The War Amps Child Amputee (CHAMP) Program, which was started by these founding war amputee veterans so that young amputees across Canada could receive financial support for artificial limbs and devices, as well as emotional support.

“Jaffray served in wartime, returned home missing a limb and continued to practice nursing,” says Petlock, who now works with The War Amps. “She never let her amputation stop her from

helping others.”

The War Amps has added Jaffray’s story to its website in an ongoing project to tell the stories of its early veteran members. “In doing so, we pay tribute to their service and help to ensure that their sacrifices are never forgotten,” says Petlock.

Battle River U11 Female Knights lost two tough games over the weekend. On Saturday at the Sedgewick Wild Rose Co-op Rec Centre, BR lost 10-0 against Fort McMurray. On Sunday in a re-match, Makenzie Muirhead scored for BR but the team lost 11-1.

Thunderstars U11 dropped an 11-3 game against Lacombe on Saturday at Forestburg Arena. Brilyn Ponto scored all three TS goals.

On Sunday, TS lost a 5-4 game at Bentley.

The teams were tied three times in the contest

before Bentley notched the winner with 7:03 remaining. Layne Zimmer got a hat trick for Thunderstars. Ryley Zimmer got the other goal, and Drake Miller picked up an assist.

Battle River U13 dropped a 9-1 game at Killam Arena on Sunday, with Jacob Steil scoring and Karter Freadrich picking up an assist.

Hughenden Jets U13-2 skated to a 1-1 home tie against Lloydminster on Friday. Trusten Dyck scored for Hughenden, while Quinn Holte got an assist. Sadie Hunter stopped 24 of 25 shots between the pipes. Jets beat Cold Lake 9-3 on Sunday at Hughenden.

The game was tied 3-3 late in the middle frame but Jets poured it on scoring six in the final 22:39 for a convincing win. Trusten Dyck and Mason Larson both had hat tricks and four point games. On Sunday at Lac La Biche, Jets dropped a 121 road game after scoring first when Laine Ference connected from Reuben Congdon only 3:44 into the contest.

Thunderstars U15 defeated Rimbey on Saturday 4-1 at Forestburg Arena. Parker Scobey scored twice and picked up an assist, while Cayden Cunningham also connected for two goals.

Ethan Neufeld and Jeremy Hansen shared the win in goal.

On Sunday at Ponoka, TS lost an 11-5 contest with Todd Wacey having a four point game (1g

Battle River U15 lost a 6-0 game Oct. 30 at Sedgewick.

Battle River U18 Tier 3 dropped a 16-2 game at Blackfalds on Sunday with Skylar Wallner and Ethan Johannesson scoring, and Lucas Backen, Brody Wallner and Lucas Docksteader gathering assists.

Battle River U18 Tier 2 won a 6-3 game at Sedgewick on Friday over Wetaskiwin. Porter Lang set up five goals.

Other scorers were;

Daysland Legion and School team up for ‘No stone left alone’ Leslie Cholowsky Editor

Daysland Legion Branch President Gordon Pennycook recently approached Daysland School Principal Wes Wilson about bringing the ‘No Stone Left Alone’ initiative to the region.

On Friday, 38 students visited the graves of 65 veterans, laying poppies on their gravestones to remember and honour them.

Wilson said he had not heard of the program before hearing about it from Pennycook, but he’s very glad he brought it to the school’s attention. “I am very enthusiastic about the No Stone Left Alone program.

“It was a great way for students to show respect for Veterans who have passed from within our community and to make sure their contributions to our freedom, as well as their connection to our local area, are recognized.”

As the Grade 8 and 9 students, under the supervision of teachers Vicky Zimmer and Casey Johnson, arrived at the cemetery, Legion President Pennycook, VicePresident Jim Gillespie, Minister Rob Johnson, and Piper Carl Symondson were on hand to greet them.

The official program included a short introduction by Pennycook and a brief description of the No Stone Left Alone initiative.

He told the students that of the over 60 Veterans buried at Daysland, only Sgt. Steve Wasylyke and Pvt Standly Charles Barker died during wartime on Canadian soil. “All those here in Daysland Cemetery are the so-called lucky ones, who returned home from their various deployments alive, but not necessarily well.

“Some would have come back partly disabled due to injuries or disease caused by weeks and months in the trenches, some were suffering from PTSD, or shell-shock, as it was called back then. Many would have left friends and family members behind.

“But they all had one goal, and that was to protect the freedom that we still enjoy today. By coming here and participating in this ceremony you are giving them the gratitude and respect they so well deserve.”

Two students, Karissa Bednarski and Lia Kasha, participated in the program, with Bednarski reciting ‘In Flanders Fields,’ and Kasha the ‘Commitment to Remember.’

Johnson gave the prayer of remembrance.

After the program, students were advised that each veteran’s grave was marked with a Canadian flag, and had been cleared of snow by Legion member Dave Hanrahan.

Daysland Schoolʼs Grade 8 and 9 students showed reverence and care when placing poppies on veteranʼs graves at the Daysland Cemetery for the ʻNo Stone Left Aloneʼ program with the Daysland Legion on Friday, Nov. 4. heard afterwards from the teachers, who said the students had given very positive feedback about the experience.

Wilson says, “We are very much hoping to make this a tradition in our community. It will be important for schools to continue the legacy of our veterans and our local Legions.

“The teacher feedback was very positive and they were very proud of how respectful our students were of the process.

“They overwhelmingly said that we need to continue this program in our school.”

Pennycook is very pleased with the results, and hopes to expand the project in future years.

The No Stone Left Alone Memorial Foundation was started by Maureen Bianchini Purvis, who promised her mother on her death bed that she would ‘try not to forget her on Armistice Day.’ That was back in 1971 and Purvis has not missed a year since. Each

Remembrance Day she lays a poppy on her mother’s gravestone in Edmonton at Beechmount Cemetery.

As she grew up, and married, she would take her two daughters along, and each year they would ask, “Why don’t the others get a poppy?”

When the girls grew older, they became more insistent, and Purvis wrote a letter to the Veterans Affairs Minister, the Minister of Education, and finally met a Lieutenant-Colonel who encouraged and helped her.

“Maureen and her family saw that the key to ongoing remembrance lay in engaging youth in a more meaningful and personal act of remembrance - so that they could truly understand and connect with the sacrifices made to give all of us the peace and freedoms we enjoy today, and carry that connection forward with them through their lives.”

No Stone Left Alone was officially launched in

2011.

Speaking a second language leads to amazing adventure

Sandra Erickson of Sedgewick, who happens to have come to Canada from Germany, recently learned of an opportunity for a bilingual (German/English) person to assist German tourists. She decided to give it a try, and for a couple of weeks this fall while acting as guide/interpreter/tourist, Erickson got to relive her own memories of a family trip touring Alberta and BC. The tour included the icefields and historical site of the ʻlast spikeʼ in the rail line that connects the entire county.

Killam woman Jessi Reber is pretty excited these days, because she not only got to connect with a country music star, she even sold him one of her artistic creations.

George Fox recently purchased a piece from Reber, who says, “He said he had a friend in New York who would love it.”

Backing up a bit, Reber has always listened to the radio, she started out as a fan of Cam FM. In 2019, she was just getting started selling her creations, and had a table at a big market in Camrose.

Cam 98.1 provided the music at the venue, with two DJs at the market. Reber introduced herself that day, then she went home and created a piece of artwork involving their names for both of them, then personally delivering them to the station in Camrose.

She says, “They were very impressed with what I gave them, Stevie (De La Rose) told me that she’d never received anything like that before.”

When CAM-FM changed its format to country music, Reber wasn’t sure she liked it as

much. Her mom recommended she try 840 AM, which is CFCW. She did, and found that she also enjoyed listening to the DJ’s on that station. Reber created artwork from the names of each of the DJs and dropped them off again at the Camrose office.

She said she got a personal thanks via phone from Stella Stevens for the gift. She also connected with Greg Shannon and A.J. Keller through the gifts.

Reber even invited Keller to another Christmas market where she was selling her wares, in Killam, and he came, with his fiancee, where the couple purchased one of her creations.

Reber creates colourized pointellism pictures, where she enhances existing images with points instead of lines or solid spaces. She uses a variety of colours to create a unique image.

With the DJs, she wrote their names, then surrounded the letters with points of colour to create each individual work that she later gifted them.

Through her ongoing conversations with Keller and Shannon, Reber found out that they would be interviewing

country music star George Fox at the Canadian Country Music Awards, and asked if they might be able to get her an autographed photo.

Knowing that the two would be busy, she also then sought out Fox’s contact information through his fan club, and emailed him directly.

When Fox and Shannon did their interview, Fox mentioned that he’d heard from Reber.

When Fox mentioned that, Shannon apparently said, “Oh, I know Jessi,” Reber said.

But not only had she made contact with Fox, but she’d sent him a picture of some of her artistic creations.

After sending emails back and forth, Fox actually ended up purchasing a picture from Reber a few weeks ago.

She sent him not just that picture, but also created a special gift piece for Fox, similar to those she’d sent to the DJs,

made from his name.

Fox sent back a picture of him with both items, and Reber says he told her he was very impressed by her work.

He recently advised her that he’d got around to sending the creation he had purchased

from her to his New York friend. “He said his friend told him it was a valuable addition to his collection.”

She’s very proud both of her connections with the DJs at the station and of her new connection with Fox.

OBITUARIES Wendy Margaret Greth-Sapieha

On October 31, 2022, Wendy Margaret GrethSapieha passed away peacefully at Killam Auxiliary Hospital.

She is remembered and survived by her husband, Mel Sapieha; daughter,

Christine Sapieha; mother and brother; Patricia and TeeAy Osborn of Edmonton; brother-inlaw, Darrell Sapieha (Charlene) of Arizona; sister-in-law, Vivian Dersch of Edmonton; niece Nicole, and nephews Sean (Georgia, great niece Charlie) and Ryan (great nephew Lucas); and sister-in-law, Sharon (Tim) Latimer of Edmonton; nieces, Jillienne and Jolene; nephews, Jordan and Jesse (Megan); as well as many other loving family members and

friends.

She was predeceased by her father Henry Greth.

Wendy was born in Edmonton, on June 21, 1959.

She grew up in Edmonton and graduated high school there, after which she pursued and achieved multiple degrees in Zoology, Psychology, and Teaching, the last of which she pursued as a career in both Edmonton and Sedgewick.

In 2009, Wendy returned to school and pur-

sued another degree of Animal Health Technology. Education was a lifelong passion of Wendy’s, and she wanted to be remembered for her thirst for knowledge.

In 1981 she married the love of her life, Mel Sapieha, whom she had known since high school.

Wendy and Mel moved to Killam in 1989 to pursue their teaching careers and to enjoy the rural lifestyle Wendy had always desired.

FAITH COLUMN: LEST WE FORGET As we focus on remembering this month, I was reminded about a child who was on the playground with his friend. A bully came up to both of them, and pushed the first boy to the ground.

When he went to push the second boy, the first child hopped up and said, “No! You push me again!” I would be lying if I said that I don’t tear up when I hear that story. It is moving to hear stories of sacrifice, of people who take the pain so others don’t have to.

That is what we remember this week. We remember all of those who served in the armed forces, and who are serving today to ensure that we keep our freedoms.

My wife and I love stories from the world wars, not because we are war mongers, but rather, when a person selflessly gives their life for us, the sacrifice fills us with gratitude.

The greatest sacrifice was given on the cross

by Jesus Christ. We have all sinned and deserve death (Romans 3:23,

6:23), but Jesus died for all those sins that if you believe in him, and give your life to him, you will be saved (John 3:16). That was the greatest sacrifice.

On Friday, Nov. 11 remember the sacrifice!

What our soldiers did, and continue to do should stir gratitude in your life. We remember their sacrifice. And throughout the year, I pray your mind will be continually drawn to remembrance of Jesus’ sacrifice.

Flagstaff Waste Management product testing food-cycler with rave reviews Leslie Cholowsky Editor

Flagstaff Waste Management manages the landfill owned by all Flagstaff County municipalities, including Rosalind.

Flagstaff County’s landfill is a dry waste facility, meaning that it mostly holds waste that will not break down biologically.

To that end, Flagstaff Waste makes every effort to encourage the recycling of yard waste each summer to create dirt they put right back into the landfill to keep waste from blowing about.

However, up until now, Flagstaff Waste had no remedy for kitchen waste contained in the thousands of municipal and rural homes served by the facility.

Board Chair Elaine Fossen, from Forestburg Village Council, attended the Federation of Canadian Municipalities conference in Regina this June, when she took in the trade show.

There, she says, “A vendor was showing a recycling machine along with a bowl of dirt that had been produced from it.

“I was quite taken with it and took an information sheet from them so that I could report back to Village Council and Flagstaff Waste.”

She says the board, and manager Murray Hampshire, were very interested.

Hampshire contacted the company directly and ordered five test machines at a substantial discount from the retail cost.

Fossen says, “I was given the opportunity to demo the machine during the month of September.” She used it for three weeks, during which time she produced an ice cream pail full of organic dirt.

“I put all my kitchen scraps into the machine, including coffee grinds, tea bags, vegetable peelings, banana peels, leftovers from my dinner plate, chicken bones, rice, bread crumbs, corn cobs, tough skins from Kohlrabi, along with the stalks, celery stalks, egg shells, leftover meat, pretty much everything.”

Fossen loaded these scraps into a pail that when full fits into the machine, and when not full, comes with a lid, complete with a filter, to seal in any smell.

“Once my pail was full, I simply placed it into the machine, locked it in, and turned it on.”

Between six and eight hours later, she says, all that would be left was dirt, about enough to fill a soup bowl.

“I did this three times a week, as there are only two of us in our household.”

She said even though she’d watched the demo at her convention, she was still floored. “It was magic. It did more than I expected.”

Fossen estimates that over her trial period she kept at least one full ‘kitchen catcher’ bag of ‘wet waste’ out of the landfill.

The resulting soil product is so biologically rich that the manufacturer suggests it be mixed with regular soil at a 1:10 ratio for flower pots and gardens.

Fossen decided to take the machine to a farmers market in Forestburg, and says that even though it was a day that had a fairly small turnout, she had seven people who wanted to buy the machine, not withstanding a price tag of $300. (That’s a substantial different from retail of $499) Fossen says, “I believe that if everyone in our community was able to reduce the amount of garbage by one small bag a week, using a machine like this, or their very own composting, we could extend the life of our landfill.

“The cost of a new landfill is very high, and if we can all do our part, we could save ourselves a lot of money as well as helping the environment.”

She’s passed the machine on to another board member, Town of Killam councillor Kevin Kinzer, and says he’s already raved to her about it. “Every board member is anxious to take their turn.”

Hampshire is presently trying to promote recycling at the landfill. Flagstaff Waste is coming off a waste diversion trial, where an employee was allotted a certain amount of hours per week to pull recyclables from the landfill. Even pulling only obvious, visible items during the trial resulted in a substantial reduction of recycling materials ending up in the landfill.

Hampshire is also promoting recycling with school children in the region. He has proposed a scholarship or bursary related to recycling, with the students asked to come up with their version of a workable recycling plan for the region.

In early October, Flagstaff Waste had a tour with the Grade 4 classes from Daysland and Killam and sent them home with a food cycler machine for their lunch rooms. He says he hasn’t yet gathered the reviews.

Fossen says, “If we could find a way to

subsidize the cost and make it affordable to more people and groups, that would be great. It would be wonderful to get a sponsor to subsidize the cost of machines. Even at $150 each, I think you’d sell a lot.”

She is sure that if she would have had machines with her when she visited the farmers market that she would have sold.

“And I’ve talked to many others who have expressed an interest.”

“I’m glad to see them going into the schools. It really is incredible at what it does.”

She’s spoken to a lot of people about it, and says even some who live in a rural setting say they’d prefer it to a compost heap that smells and attracts pests. “Plus, regular compost takes a long time to break down something like a corn cob, this machine does it in hours.”

Fossen said the machine also doesn’t use a lot of power to work its magic, I think it was about nine cents worth.

She and her husband are big recyclers; “This is just an extension of what we already do.” And even with her recycling habit, she says using the food cycler reduced her waste further.

“We need to find a way to make it affordable for anyone who wants one.”

Once the board has fully evaluated the machine, it will discuss future options for potentially selling the machines locally.

Flagstaff County Council heard a report from its own Flagstaff Waste board member, Jeff Eckstrand, earlier in the summer.

Eckstrand noted that given the 1:10 ratio of the food cycler product to regular soil, that a five-gallon pail full spread into a rural garden, or even on a field, on a regular basis, had the potential to positively impact the soil conditions over time.

Anything done to increase the life of the landfill, and reduce the about of ‘wet waste’ going in, will benefit everyone in Flagstaff County.

Sedgewick Good as New supports community churches Since it's a bit slower for news this week, I Sandra Erickson thought I'd share about Ph: 780-384-2030 the incredible adventure I Sedgewick got to go on back in September. email: sedgewicknews@gmail.com A company was looking for a German-speaking translator for a bus tour going from Calgary to Vancouver. Needless to say I dropped everything and said YES! I met up with the tour guide and German tourists in Calgary. On day one we went to Lake Louise, Moraine Lake, and Banff.

Day two took us to the Athabasca Glacier where we went on top of the icefield. What an experience! Those monster buses weigh 21 tons without passengers. You also go up and down a 34 per cent incline.

The weather was beautiful and there was almost no wind even though we told everyone to dress extra warm. I was last there 22 years ago as a tourist myself with my parents back then on one of our summer trips to Canada before we moved here. And believe me, that day was cold and windy. After the icefield we had

to get all the way to Golden.

Day three was the longest bus day; however, we did stop in Revelstoke and Craigellachie, the Last Spike.

Our final destination was Abbotsford, from where we entered Vancouver. Of course we stopped in Gastown and Stanley Park before dropping off all our travellers at the cruise ship terminal to head to Hawaii.

It was such an amazing experience, I'll be forever remembering this adventure. Anticipating this would be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, and thanks to a supportive husband, I was lucky enough to make it happen.

However, turns out there's a demand for Germanspeaking tour guides so who knows what the future holds.

Suspended Forestburg veterinarian now facing multiple court appearances Leslie Cholowsky Editor

Forestburg former veterinarian Jeffrey Serfas will appear in Killam Provincial Court to answer to an assault charge on Dec. 6, as well as a charge of disobeying a provincial court order.

Serfas has four other court dates, one in December, two in February, and one in March, to address additional charges.

On Dec. 20, in Killam Provincial Court, Serfas will also answer to one charge of disobeying a court order and one charge of criminal harassment.

On Feb. 7, Serfas will attend court answering to three charges: Mischief Obstruction, Criminal Harassment, and Disobeying a PC Court order.

On Feb. 21, Serfas will attend Killam Prov. Court to answer to a charge of failure to comply with undertaking or conditions. He has a further court date of March 7 to answer one charge of criminal harassment, one of disobeying PC Court Order, and four charges of failure to comply with undertaking or conditions.

Serfas was banned from practicing veterinary medicine in May 2019 for the period of June 15/19 to June

15/20.

He was then charged with breaching that order in a later court appearance, and in November of 2020 Dr. Serfas’ registration with the Alberta Veterinary Medical Association (ABVMA) was cancelled for a minimum period of five years. Serfas was also prohibited from maintaining ownership in Forestburg Veterinary Clinic or any corporation approved as a permit holder by the ABVMA. In the Decision of the Hearing Tribunal of the ABVMA, Legal Counsel for the Association asserted that, “Dr. Serfas is the ABVMA’s ‘most prolific offender’ with eight (8) discipline matters,” also referring to him as an “ungovernable professional.”

The Decision further noted; “The Hearing Tribunal recognizes that cancelling a veterinarian’s registration with ABVMA is generally considered to be the most serious sanction that can be issued by a Hearing Tribunal for findings of unprofessional conduct as defined in the VPA. However, the seriousness of Dr. Serfas’s actions and his repeated failure to comply with and his contempt for orders issued by Hearing Tribunals of the ABVMA over many years warrant cancellation.”

Child amputee finds inspiration from Second World War veteran Eight-year-old Isla McCallum is an energetic young girl with a big smile, and Charlie Jefferson, 98, is a veteran of the Second World War. At first glance, these two appear to have little in common, yet they share something special: They are both amputees.

Mr. Jefferson served as a Lieutenant with the Queen’s Own Rifles Regiment. In 1945, in the Rhine Valley, Germany, he was injured by an anti-personnel mine explosion, resulting in the loss of his left leg below the knee.

When he returned home, Charlie joined The War Amps, which was started by First World War amputee veterans to help each other adapt to their new reality.

Years later, these veterans established the Child Amputee (CHAMP) Program, which provides young amputees, like Isla, who was born a left arm amputee, with financial assistance for artificial limbs and the peer support of fellow amputees.

It was through The War Amps that Isla and her family heard about Mr. Jefferson.

With Remembrance Day coming up, they visited him at his Ottawa residence.

Isla was interested to learn about Mr. Jefferson and the medals he earned for his service. She was also intrigued that he too was missing a limb. Isla described Mr. Jefferson as a role model who made her feel proud to be an amputee.

Isla’s mom, Jamie, says it is important that her daughter understands the sacrifices that many Canadians made for our freedom.

“Mr. Jefferson and others risked their lives so that we could live in a better world.”

Through The War Amps “Operation Legacy,” Isla and young amputees across the country pay tribute to the veteran members of the Association who laid the foundation for programs that continue to make a difference in the lives of amputees today.

“Because of their work, child amputees have the tools and resources they need to be active, independent, and confident,” says Jamie.

But Charlie says he also takes comfort in knowing that Isla and other “champs” will continue spreading the message of remembrance, even when he no longer can.

Adds Jamie, “They [veterans] passed this legacy to younger amputees, and now it’s their turn to share these stories so that the sacrifices of veterans and all those who served are never forgotten.

“It’s a wonderful legacy!”

Sedgewick bowling results: Bowling Bags remain in the lead Snow has hit Sedgewick, but that didn’t stop bowlers from hitting the alleys.

The YBC took to the alley on Tuesday, Nov. 1.

For the Bowlasaurus Boys: Leyton Loeppky scored the high single of 70 and the high double of 115.

Loeppky has high average of 58.

For the Bantam Girls: Jeana Smith scored the high single of 124 and the high triple of 308. Smith’s high average is 103.

For the Bantam Boys: Jaxen Loeppky bowled the high single of 81.

Loeppky also scored the high triple of 215 and has the high average of 72.

For the Junior Boys: Thomas Bruce scored the high single of 141 and the high triple of 271. Bruce has the high average of 90.

For the Junior Girls: Willow Odegard scored the high single of 159 and the high triple of 400. Odegard has the high average of 133.

Sedgewick Ladies Afternoon Bowling also knocked ‘em down on Tuesday. Verna Erickson bowled the high single of 222 and the high triple of 570. Verna Erickson has the high average of 182.

As for the teams, the Rolling Pins scored the high single of 79 and the high triple of 123. The Bowling Bags remain in the lead with 14 points.

The bowlers of the week are Donna Dolany and Verna Erickson, with 42 points above average.

Sedgewick Mixed Bowling bowled from Tuesday to Thursday, Nov. 3.

On the ladies’ side Marilyn Patten bowled the high single of 236 and Sheila Tanton bowled the high triple of 513. Lynnette Jahnke still has the high average of 200.

On the men’s side: Richard Erickson scored the high single of 241 and Garry Klein scored the high triple of 673. Klein’s high average is at 204.

The team high single of 201 points above average was scored by the Lucky Strikers as well as the high triple of 261 points above average. The Lucky Strikers have extended their lead with 25 points.

The bowlers of the week were Marilyn Patten, with 102 points above average, and Chris Davis, with 93 points above average. Darcy Eskra, Kevin Sakaluk, and Glenda Lien scored three spares in a row. Sakaluk also bowled four spares in a row while Daren Lien bowled five. Sakaluk, Eskra, Chris Davis, and Dannica Callahoo each bowled a turkey. Karen Keogh and Dale Johnson both got TV shots.

Sedgewick Seniors avoided the gutters on Tuesday and Wednesday, Nov. 2.

On the ladies’ side Sharon Wylie bowled the high single of 211 and Verna Erickson bowled the high triple of 527. Mary Lou Rawluck still has the high average of 171.

On the men’s side: Garry Klein scored the high single

of 287 and bowled the high triple of 686. Klein’s high average sits at 234.

The team high single of 165 points above average was scored by Team Wylie as well as the high triple of 297 points above average. Team Lien has taken the lead with 21 points.

The bowlers of the week were Sharon Wylie, with 66

points above average, and Richard Erickson, with 71 points above average. Daren Lien bowled a turkey while Garry Klein scored four strikes in a row.

This week had some high scores from almost every category, as well as strong leads for every team. Tune in next week to see if anyone can catch up.
