Irma Aces open ECSHL season with win against Provost Leslie Cholowsky Staff Reporter

Viking School’s annual Halloween celebrations had ghosts, goblins and other ‘spook-tacular’ entities showing off their costumes at a walk on Halloween day Monday, October 31. The Halloween walk took place inside the school gymnasium this year instead of through the halls of the school as previously. And once again the public was invited to attend after a couple years of COVID-19 restrictions prevented it.

The East Central Senior Hockey League 2021-22 Champions Irma Aces started the 2022-23 season on the road this past Friday, Oct. 28, with a win against the Provost Combines.

Neither team scored in the first period, where the Combines barely outshot the Aces 12-9, but couldn’t get past goalie Austin Prior.

Provost scored on a power play early in the second to go ahead by one.

Irma tied it up mid-period with a goal by Tyler Fischer from Zach Mackay and Carter Lawson, but two minutes later Provost went ahead again to make it 2-1 for the Combines.

Carter Lawson scored for the Aces near the end of the period, unassisted, to tie the game 2-2 going into the third.

Mackay scored Irma’s third of the night on a power play, from Fischer and Ross Herzog, to go ahead 3-2, then with just seconds left, Taylor Schubada took Irma to a 4-2 final, unassisted.

Irma will play again on Saturday, Nov. 5, travelling to Stettler to take on the Imperials.

The Aces home-opener is scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 12, when the Oyen Eagles will fly in.

Standard of Excellence Awards- Social 30-2: Paige Pauls, Morgan Ward and Holden Gwinn The Standard of Excellence Awards are awarded to students who achieve an 80% or higher on a Provincial Achievement Test or Diploma Exam. Gratton Coulee has generously donated $50 for each test that a student achieves 80% or higher.

Kinsella Recreation and Agricultural Society Scholarship Paige Pauls This $1,000 award is granted to a Grade 12 graduate at both Irma and Viking School who receives the highest average in a weighted program and who is going into postsecondary.

Jim Lingley Memorial Award – Presented by Donna Lingley recipient - Taylor Lancaster The Jim Lingley Memorial Award is dedicated to a Grade 12 student who has shown perseverance in the dash 2 courses. A $500 award is given in memory of Jim to this committed student.

Clair Prior Memorial Scholarship- Pablo Olivera Juarez The Clair Prior Memorial Scholarship is awarded to a Grade 12 student who demonstrates in their daily life the attributes most valued by Clair- hard work, community contribution, and a passion for athletics and firefighting. Students who applied for this scholarship were required to submit a form that awarded points based on these attributes. A $500 award is given to this student in memory of Clair.

Alex Heimdal Kind Heart Grade 5 Award - Presented by Natalie and Nikolas Heimdal The recipient of this award is Brynn Newton.

This award is to celebrate those that demonstrate great friendship skills, a caring nature, determination, and above all, a way of spreading happiness and love to others. These are all qualities Alex had and admired in others. A Grade 5 student will receive this award each year.

Governor General’s Award Medal – Paige Pauls This honor is in recognition of the achievement by a Grade 12 graduating student. This is an academic medal that considers the average in all grade 11 and 12 courses as listed on the student’s official Transcript of Grades as issued by the Ministry of Education. It is calculated based on final results after provincial examinations where the Ministry of Education requires final exams.

Premier’s Citizenship Award- Paige Pauls This award is granted to one graduating student from each high school in Alberta on the recommendation of his or her school. This award honors outstanding achievements in citizenship, leadership, community service, and volunteer work.

BRSD review addressing ‘gaps in learning’ resulting from pandemic Patricia Harcourt Editor

Student achievement and parental satisfaction with the Battle River School District’s educational program were reviewed at the BRSD’s October mid-month meeting.

Mentioned were mental health, wellness, and connections between school groups as references of concern.

Called the “assurance plan,” the review results

are a summary of information taking into account “real disruptions in recent years,” based on the pandemic and health restrictions.

The BRSD meeting report included a statement by Deputy Superintendent Shan Jorgensen-Adam: “We need to continue to support our students who are still in need of mental health and wellness supports.”

The division continues to assess students in

terms of literacy and numeracy, she said, “and our staff are working to ensure gaps in learning that have resulted are being addressed.”

Now that the schools are “once again open for business,” the report also stated: “We are certain connections between students and teachers and schools, and community partners, will strengthen.”

The school board also approved the purchase of five or six new school

buses by using $700,000 of the transportation budget for that purpose.

An organizational meeting reviewed and updated the terms of reference for each of the committees, which is done annually, and includes the executive, community engagement, student affairs, appeals and negotiations committees.

Bruce Ag Society prepares for decades old peroghy supper Patricia Harcourt Editor

The Bruce Agricultural Society is once again putting on a hugely popular event that has traditionally filled the hamlet’s community centre with people eager to enjoy a delicious peroghy supper with all the trimmings.

Volunteers spend an entire day prior to the supper, this year being held on Saturday, November 5, to make the peroghies by hand, an annual tradition for the past 30 years. With cultural and other events now

being held again due to the lifting of health restrictions, the society members are once again working hard to make this its usual success. `”We’ve held it the first Saturday in November for 30 years,” said Bruce Ag Society member Paulette Erickson, who’s farmed in the Bruce area with husband Morris for decades.

The only missed supper was in 2020 when the COVID-19 pandemic basically shut down all events locally and regionally.

The preparations are

mainly accomplished a few days prior to the supper. Paulette said that on Tuesday night before hand the food preparation starts with peeling lots of potatoes.

Then Wednesday, upwards of 25 volunteers get together to make the peroghies for about 250 people expected to crowd into the community centre Saturday night.

“It takes several hours to make several thousand for sure,” said Paulette, of the main attraction. “We used to do more when we were supplying them to the curling club for deep

frying to curlers and other people,” she said. “But we don’t do that anymore.”

Food costs have gone up for the group, as with everyone else. The society goes through four bags of flour, “and cheese (which fills the inside of the peroghy) is a lot more,” she said.

The volunteers keep costs down by doing all the work themselves such as prepping the food, admissions, cooking and bar tending.

The BRSD administration is developing a proposal for board approval.

The board recently marked School Bus Safety Week (October 1721) by praising bus drivers for “doing an excellent job of keeping children safe as they travel

to and from school each day.”

The board advised drivers that it is “illegal and dangerous” for vehicles to pass a school bus that is stopped with its lights flashing, from either direction on the road. which puts children in serious danger.

Drivers also face having six demerit points and a $567 fine imposed.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR Reader: T-Rex and other once-a-year visitors

Dear Editor: Halloween in a small town is so much fun, especially when it is nice weather and everyone is on the street.

I had 17 children at my house by 6 p.m. (which is even before the fire truck comes down the street) and about 57 children by the end of the evening. The last child was at the door around 7:45 p.m. and I shut down the front lights by 8:30 p.m.

In true Viking style the fire truck comes down the street and shortly after most of the children arrive. I don't know if that is planned or just a coincidence but I have also noticed this on other years.

My favourites this year included my first visitors - a tiger and an elephant - arriving at about 4 p.m. They where really not sure what it was all about but accepted my offering of cheezit crackers and a yogurt tube.

The yogurt tubes had glow in the dark characters on the tubes as a special Halloween edition. I'm not sure about

that because they need to be exposed to light for 30 seconds and then taken to a dark place to see the glowing design. Not the usual way to eat a yogurt treat.

I also was visited by a Victorian bat with nice lacy wings an an elegant hat.

Three classic bed sheet ghosts arrived reminding each other to be careful not to trip on their sheets. A little angel and a devil also arrived traveling together. The angel was in a pretty white dress, halo and lacy wings. The devil was in a pretty red dress and red horns. Another little girl arrived in an elegant long black dress with a copper coloured over skirt and hooped hem line, looking beautiful, like she might be a ballroom dancer. She informed me in no uncertain terms she was a witch.

I actually had a lot of winged creatures visit. Such as angels, bats, fairies and I think at least one unicorn with wings. One creature looked very much like a little

boy in a striped sweater.

When he turned to leave I saw his wings, antenna and stinger (he did not have his hood up). Obviously a bumble bee.

To get with the theme I had on a hair band with cat ears and a Halloween print apron I made several years ago.

I like talking to children about their costumes. As I was complimenting one little boy on his costume he told me that I also looked "very cute!”

Another child announced that he dreamt about me the night before. When I asked if he knew me he said: “No but I still had a dream about you.” His friend chimed in that this was true that his friend dreams about people even if he does not know them. He did not elaborate about the dream which was fine by me.

At one point a large group (20-25 )adults and children arrived together. The parents (mothers) also dressed up in white fancy dresses, the sort

that would be worn for first communion (but these where adults). The children where in more usual Halloween costumes like princesses, witches, animals, unicorns and monsters. Anyway they assembled in front of my neighbour’s very elaborate Halloween decorations to have a group picture taken.

The picture taking was done by the non-costumed fathers.

They certainly appeared to be having a good time.

I noticed a lot of parents had costumes on. At one point I went out to give treats and noticed a large (appeared about 10 feet tall) TRex on the other side of the street and a friendly dinosaur who waved when I acknowledged him.

At my house Halloweeners get two treats per person. This year a Halloween type treat of Cheezit crackers or Cheesies and a healthier snack of yogurt tubes or cheese strings.

Babies and toddlers get apple sauce or pudding cups. By far the favourite by request is the

The use of violence as a means of supporting a politi-

cal viewpoint is abhorrent and damages the very constitution and freedoms that it claims to support.

There are too many countries around the world where democracy is not respected or even possible.

As a general outcome, any election will leave about 50 per cent of the people happy and 50 per cent unhappy but

almost 100 per cent will accept the result.

It is just a few individuals, far too many at the Jan 6th Capitol riots, that are so misguided that they will use violence to overcome a valid result.

Pray for Paul Pelosi and the freedom of the people as both have been attacked.

cheese string. Yup that's right not candy, chocolate, or chips but cheese. One little boy enthusiastically exclaimed he was glad to figure out where others had gotten their cheese string and now he had one.

Little children also like and will voluntarily choose pudding cups.

Tomorrow I am participating in an on line workshop about how to write grant proposals. It is being offered by the local MP. The next step will be to look for grants to help our local food bank.

Hopefully useful information but not likely as much fun as Halloween.

WORD ON THE STREET RCMP assist with medical emergency On October 26, police observed a male operating a quad in Viking. The male was known to have outstanding warrants as well as be on conditions not to operate any motor vehicle. He was arrested and taken to the Viking Detachment. The warrants were executed and he was released to appear in Vegreville Provincial Court in December. He is also facing five new charges including Sec. 145(5)(a) CC-Fail to Comply with Release Order Condition and four provincial violations under the Traffic Safety Act. Also that date, police received information regarding an ongoing identity fraud where an employee is working under a false name. This investigation is ongoing.

Late that night, police received a complaint of a break and enter in progress at a rural property southwest of Viking.

Police attended the property; however, the culprits were no longer on scene. Police have not identified any suspects at this time.

Also that night, police received a request from Children’s Services to assist with the apprehension of an infant. Police attended the residence and kept the peace while the infant was removed from the home.

On October 27, police received a report of four garbage bags of wire casings located in the Kinsella area. Police were not in a position to attend at the time as they were assisting Tofield RCMP with a high priority file.

That afternoon, police were advised of a fire at a property west of Viking. Police attended and learned a controlled burn had gotten out of hand but nothing criminal or suspicious had occurred.

Also that day, police received a complaint of a suspicious male in the parking lot of a business

in Viking. The complainant advised the male had looked in vehicles that were parked in the lot and then walked away. He was unable to identify the male in question.

On October 28, police received a request from EMS to assist with a medical emergency on Highway 14 just east of Viking. When police arrived on scene, they found two males taking turns performing CPR on a passenger in a vehicle. Police took over compressions until EMS arrived and took over the scene. The male was transported to the Viking Health Centre where he was later declared deceased. The incident was deemed non-suspi-

cious in nature and there was no further police involvement required.

That afternoon, police were informed of mischief that had occurred at a residence in Viking. The complainant advised a vehicle had attended his property and an unknown person had unloaded a large spool of wire in his driveway, blocking in his vehicle. The complainant called back later to advise he had found the owner of the wire and it had been dropped off at the wrong address in error and there was no need for police involvement.

On October 29, police received a complaint of trespassing at a rural property north of

Bruce. The complainant advised there was a male on his land pumping water from his slough. Police mediated the situation and no charges were warranted.

Also that date, police received a complaint of a theft that had occurred sometime over the past two months. The complainant advised that tenants he had evicted from his rental property west of Viking had stolen items from him. Police are following up on this matter.

During this time period, police also dealt with numerous motor vehicle collisions involving wildlife and well as several 911 hang ups from a phone line with ongoing issues.

MINOR HOCKEY REPORT Kerry Anderson These are some of the results from Minor Hockey League games held recently. (Please note that scores and scoring is taken from the websites, and some game scores and scoring is dependent on proper league entries).

Irma U11 Female Aces (1-1-0) dropped a 7-1 game at Fort McMurray on Oct 22 with Tayva Fenton scoring the lone goal from Hailey Allen and Eldlynn Newton. The next day the team had better luck, beating the home team 7-3 on the strength of Aubrey Waddell’s four goal game. Regional economic development gets large council discussion Patricia Harcourt Economic development is becoming a big priority for Beaver County as the Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) moved it forward on the agenda for county council.

CAO Kayleena Spiess introduced a regional economic development plan discussion at the regular council meeting October 19. There was a great deal of discussion but any decision was moved to the next meeting in November.

Spiess provided council with Lochaven Consulting’s “Economic Development Conversation” presentation which was accepted for information. However, a decision on any potential regional development plan was left for the meeting on November 2.

Spiess said the reason for the discussion Oct. 19 was “to plant the seeds as to where we are going,” in terms of economic development.

The Beaver Regional Partnership (BRP) group composed of local municipal CAOs met Oct. 6 and saw a presentation from Lochaven regarding the benefits of a regional economic development plan, as opposed to each municipality having its own plan.

Council was asked to consider these economic development issues: efforts made in the past, what success looks like, what opportunities and challenges exist for a regional approach, and what would be the preferred approach.

Reeve Kevin Smook (Division 1) and Deputy Reeve Gene Hrabec (Division 3) “are the longest serving (on council) so know what has happened in the past,” said Smook.

Margaret Jones, manager of legislative services, added that from a regional perspective the concept of a regional economic development officer was considered in the past but the county did not proceed with it due to costs that would be incurred.

“It didn’t get a lot of traction,” said Jones.

“I think that traction has to be unilateral for all parties,” said Hrabec, noting that there are some municipalities that want to work one-on-one with the

county, while others want to work on a regional basis. The idea of a regional development officer got “shut down,” he said, in 2008-2009.

Spiess confirmed Hrabec’s observation noting that “there is a history of challenge” to this idea. In speaking to local CAOs, she said: “I got the sense everyone is on board to economic development, and I got the sense the cooperation is there. But there is some disconnect between the urbans,” referring to towns and villages within the county’s boundaries.

“Businesses are not interested in specific boundaries,” she said. “They are drawn to a region…So cooperation (between municipalities) would have to dovetail to create branding in this area.”

She also noted that, “I have seen the value in speaking to the various CAOs,” and suggested developing an Economic Development Commission “to help with these past challenges.”

A commission would offer a level of protection that could affect a local regional plan if there are changes in CAOs, or politicians.

She suggested combining a commission and a regional economic development plan to create “a synergy to help break down obstacles,” such as identifying local planning differences that could hinder quick action if needed.

For Spiess, this brought up other issues such as: “How do regional development plans come alive; what are the challenges from the past; can all the municipalities afford an EDO officer, much less “a good one?”

Smook cited Claystone Waste Ltd. as a successful example of regional economic development from the past.

“We’re not going to hit a home run like that every day,” he said. “That was a grand slam (and) the municipalities did it together.”

Referring to the CAO’s remarks, he said: “I see great promise in it.” But he noted it was “still in the conceptual stages,” and the presenter at the BRP meeting needed to be more detailed.

For Spiess, the important questions were if all the local municipalities were on board and committed to the idea of

regional economic development, and an advisory committee to formulate a plan might work best.

She added that a $250,000 grant could be accessed through an Alberta Community Partnership (ACP) grant for a regional economic development plan. Municipal cooperation would make this application “highly successful,” she said.

“Five municipalities moving in synergy…make it a good selling point,” she said.

Smook said local money wouldn’t be required initially if a grant is received, provided the other municipalities agree to the regional plan.

But Division 4 Councillor Barry Bruce cautioned that local residents will have seen it before if the county spends money on economic development and gets no “bang for their buck.”

He suggested meeting with every community to explain what the county wants to do.

“If we’re successful it helps the tax base and makes the community feel included,” he said. It also might prevent residents from coming in later to complain about a development they knew was coming.

“We could maybe avoid this if we included them in the first place,” said Bruce.

Spiess agreed it was important to “educate the public on why economic development is so important and create that branding first,” with a mandate of “constant public consultation.”

However, the CAO first wants to have an economic plan in place before speaking with business owners. The plan is necessary “because it’s so vast and there are so many directions economic development could go,” she said.

Division 2 Councillor Lionel Williams added that existing businesses could also be assisted to expand.

“We always forget about expansion of existing businesses,” agreed Spiess, while pursuing big industry. “We can help existing businesses learn how to grow.”

Hrabec said more information on the financials involved was needed, such

as “where we stand” regarding the cost. “What is the dollar value for municipalities is a starting factor,” he said, adding each should be asked their interest in being part of a regional plan.

“That’s what fell off the tracks before because of picking winners and losers,” he said, adding the county’s budget deliberations are coming up and this needs to be included in it.

Spiess said the county’s new economic development officer (EDO) would be starting in a week and will build a preliminary plan that the county will move forward on by talking to businesses, the two county industrial parks (Equity Industrial park and Viking/Beaver Industrial Park), business organizations, etc.

The county would use its own internal resources, including the EDO, she said. “We’re using our own internal resources. It’s all within our budget for these initial county goals.”

The regionalization of the plan would start once all of the county related work is completed, she said.

“We’re going to start now,” she said.

“Other municipalities could do their own thing or go together on a commission…We would figure out funding once this is decided about a year from now.”

She said success would translate into willingness to invest and grow a diverse assessment base, and that’s tied to economic development. She noted that December 14 was the deadline for the ACP grant application. The county needs to know if 50 per cent of local municipalities are “on board with this,” adding the EDP can put together the preliminary goals by the end of the year.

Spiess suggested getting feedback from the municipalities would be necessary before making the ACP application.

Smook said waiting to act until the November 2 meeting would give councillors “time to ponder” this information and the incoming EDO. His motion to bring back the request for a regional economic development plan to the meeting on November 2 for a decision was carried.

Farmers can rejoice following harvest completion based on the outcome for their crops. Despite dealing with dry growing conditions this year, the final harvest report by the province has farmers enjoying well above average yields for the most part.

In fact, the yield is 10 per cent above the five-year average as recorded

by Alberta Crop Report. And good weather meant farmers were able to complete their harvesting two to three weeks earlier than the average, which also happened in the previous year.

The report concluded that quality for hard red spring wheat, canola, and dry peas was above the five year average as well, although durum and oats were lower in quality. Malt and feed barley stayed on par with the five year average.

Nate Horner, who retained his position as minister of agriculture and irrigation in the recent cabinet shuffle, gave credit to the agriculture producers for the remarkable outcome this fall.

“Alberta’s producers have faced a number of challenges over the years, but through their hard work and dedication, continue to show the immense value of the agriculture sector and the contributions this industry makes to our economy and communities,” he said.

On the down side, farmers are dealing with a decline in soil moisture reserves due to this year’s dry conditions and heat over the summer.

The statistics show that 40 per cent of soil moisture in the province is rated poor, with 32 per cent fair, 27 per cent good and only one per cent excellent.

But the report holds hope for good snow pack conditions over the winter to help build up moisture levels again. “It is anticipated that soil moisture reserves and surface water supplies will build up to an acceptable level before the 2023 growing season,” the report predicted.

The final report was made with 99 per cent of crops harvested as of October 11. The central and northeast regionals of the province fell into the middle in terms of yields which were estimated at nine and eight per cent above the five-year averages. The south region had the highest yields at 18 per cent above the five year average, while the Peace region were six per cent.

The report also stated that 94 per cent of hard red spring wheat and 78 per cent of durum wheat are grading in the top two grades. Also 34 per cent of barley is eligible for malt and 54 per cent is grading as No. 1 feed.

Holden pumpkin carving event a smashing success

Eight winning pumpkins, both carved and decorated, are lined up after judging at the Holden Pumpkin Carving competition Oct. 29 at the Studio 14 Art Gallery. The competition drew 27 entries. Studio 14 volunteer Michele Mulder said the contest attracted several entries from people in the community ranging in age from four to nearly 80 years old.

“I was really surprised at the turnout,” she said. “I actually thought there would be a few kids that would participate, but we had 27 participants

(which) for a town this size is pretty good.”

Holden’s population as of 2021 is 375.

Meanwhile, Mulder explained that the first pumpkin carving event at the Gallery was held in 2019 prior to the pandemic and organized by local volunteer Elaine Cooper who tragically passed away at the age of 62 in 2021.

“Elaine Cooper used to be a primary mover and shaker here in Holden,” she said. “She was absolutely instrumental in starting up a lot of events that hap-

pened in the Gallery before COVID. “So now, the remaining volunteers are carrying on her legacy.”

In terms of contest rules, Mulder said the only rules were that the pumpkin was either carved or decorated and prizes went to a winner in each category.

Eight prizes in all, ranging from Walmart gift cards to movie passes, were awarded in each of the four age groups: four to 12, 13-19, 21-65 and then over 65.

“The gallery donated some gift certificates and some locals, Beaver Viking

Family and Community Support Services (FCSS) donated as well,” she said.

Mulder added that the pumpkins were all numbered upon entry, ensuring a fair judging from volunteers with (FCSS). The complete list of the winners was not available by press time.

Meanwhile, Mulder said she is looking forward to next year’s event.

“I think all things considered it went off fairly well,” she said. “So bigger and better next year, hopefully.”

Battle River-Crowfoot MP Damien Kurek’s credentials went up another notch with his appointment as vice-chair of the Environmental and S u s t a i n a b l e D e v e l o p m e n t Committee in Ottawa on October 21.

Kurek stated he plans to represent the views of his constituents when it comes to environmental issues, from “fighting the carbon tax to promoting technological and innovative solutions to environmental challenges.”

Kurek said: “I am ready to do the practical work to ensure that the committee functions efficiently.”

Kurek conducted a town hall meeting in Viking October 14 where those attending spoke against the governing federal Liberal policies on agriculture, energy and the environment, among others.

Kurek stated then that the country was a decade behind in where it should be building pipelines that can get oil and gas where it needs to go.

He also said he wasn’t opposed to green energy projects but believed in the free market system to

let the market decide what will be successful in the energy industry.

Kurek states in the announcement that the goals of his fellow Conservatives on their team “largely come from the feedback I’ve received from constituents and folks across the country who want pragmatic and practical work on all things related to the environment.”

He has been busy holding town halls across his constituency gathering those opinions in recent days.

Kurek already sits on the Standing Committee on Access to Information, Privacy and Ethics. Kurek says it was this committee that takes responsibility for bringing the SNC Lavalin and WE Charity scandals to the forefront.

Kurek said that committee work is a “big part” of holding the government to account.

BRCF Dinner honours community builders in the region Leslie Cholowsky Staff Reporter The Battle River Community Foundation (BRCF) held a Community Builders dinner on Saturday, Oct. 29, in Killam to honour Jack and Sharon Moser.

The evening drew more than 250 people in all, and by early estimates, raised over $40,000 towards a new BRCF fund in the Moser’s name.

Mosers accepted the honours being offered in the humblest way possible, turning the focus from themselves to other members of the community who they said both helped them on their journeys as volunteers, but who were also community builders in their own right.

Mosers were piped into the packed venue by Battle River Pipe and Drum Band members Ian Malcolm and Kari Fox Newby.

BRCF board member Neil Lunty acted as master of ceremonies for the evening. “Jack and Sharon, I’m sure that like most past honourees, when you eventually, and after much persuasion and with a lot of reluctance, agreed to be our honourees for this year’s rural dinner, I’m sure you didn’t quite know what you were getting in for.

“These fundraising dinners that we hold have a twofold purpose: one is to recognize worthy persons who’ve spent years contributing unselfishly to their local community, and you both certainly qualify on all counts, Jack and Sharon.

“The other purpose of these dinners is to establish new funds within the BRCF. This year a fund will be founded in Jack and Sharon’s name, which will provide them the opportunity to keep on giving back to their community in perpetuity.”

He added, “The ‘perpetuity aspect’ of the funds within the foundation can more clearly be seen if one reviews past community builder dinner honourees.

“Some of the honourees have passed on, but their funds continue, and are still giving back to their communities in their names.”

Lunty gave a special mention of 2015 nominee, the late Ken Drever - BRCF Ambassador Emeritus, who had strong ties to both Camrose and to Flagstaff County.

“Many of you here knew Ken well, or were at least aware of his overwhelming generosity. Ken was one of the original founders of the BRCF, in 1995.

“He was always one of the biggest boosters of the Foundation; and if he was not the biggest contributor over his lifetime, he had to be very close to it.” Lunty pointed out that several of Drever’s family were in attendance, and also that Saturday would have been his 93rd birthday. In his honour, Pat MacKinnon created a special birthday cake honouring Ken. Lunty introduced auctioneers Dale Jones and Darrin Holben, to hold a special auction for the cake as well as the traditional auction of the first two tables to eat.

Lunty said that Jones has acted as auctioneer at all but one community builders dinner, and related that Jones had a serious farm accident in June, with “a long recovery process.” He added, “We are delighted that he has returned to our stage.”

As Jones began the auction, he said, “Here we have this special cake, and a moment for us to celebrate a very, very dear friend.”

Foundation, the growth of the fund, and how it gives back on the strength of its growth, without ever losing its principal.

This ensures that the individuals who have set up funds, like the Mosers, and other community builders, will contribute to their communities in perpetuity.

Lunty reported that of the grants paid out by the funds, over $2 million has come to the Flagstaff County area.

He called on Heather Chevraux to give a tribute to Sharon and Jack.

Chevraux said, “The first words that came to mind as I thought about Jack and Sharon were: helpful, generous, adventurous, and of course, a lot of fun to be around.”

She talked about meeting Jack as her son’s hockey team’s manager, and how he reached out to her when she was struggling, offering to take her oldest to every practice.

Chevraux said that Sharon is: “One of the most generous people I know. Sharon’s generosity extends beyond her family and friends.” As an example, she listed a number of organizations that Sharon has been involved in.

She spoke about Sharon’s manner, that she is “Kind and gracious of manner; softspoken and respectful. Sharon just has that positive energy vibe that makes you feel good to be around.”

BRCF Director Jim Hampshire gave the next tribute. He introduced himself first, saying, “I’m from.. a little bit east of here....

“A special evening like tonight is not a roast, but a recognition from the community accomplishments of Jack and Sharon; but we would be remiss if we didn’t tell a couple of stories.”

Kidding aside, Hampshire painted a picture of an enduring friendship, of a couple who shared their time with family and with community.

“The Killam community is so lucky to have families like the Mosers, who continue to be such good volunteers. Always ready to be involved and give their time and see projects through to completion.

They are strong supporters of facilities, groups, their church, and the many activities of their children and grandchildren.

“Sharon calls Jack a social butterfly,” Hampshire added, “This is evident by the wide variety of friends here tonight.

“This well-deserved couple are putting their time and generosity into making our communities better, just like the Foundation’s philosophy.

“I count myself fortunate to have Jack and Sharon as longtime friends; even though our addresses are geographically different. We have managed to look beyond local rivalries and enjoy each other’s company for over 50 years.”

The live auction followed next featuring cookies and pickled eggs prepared by Sharon, and also tarts and fudge prepared

by Jack’s two sisters, Norma Jean Bieleny and Rita Moser. Moser’s son Justin donated a hand-made wooden sign, and Sharleen Chevraux donated a John Deere Wall hanging. Three unusual lots included auctioning off Murray Gaume, Brent Child (and his grain truck), and Jack himself (along with a couple of loads of gravel).

Jones and Holben have a reputation for not only being efficient auctioneers pulling the best dollar for each item, but also entertaining, and Jones has a tendency to go straight for the heart.

Jones said he’s had the unique privilege of watching not only what Sharon and Jack have done in the community; “but it goes back to their parents, and it goes back to their siblings. Tonight we are really celebrating something that was taught to this family. Through the years I’ve had the experience, and a wonderful experience, of watching this family learn what it is to be generous, not only with their money, but with their time and the talents we’ve already talked about. We are sitting in a hall tonight that Jack’s dad played such a major role in. There are other things we would find as we look around town. That is something that is taught, it is literally taught.”

“This family learned it, and they learned it from Mom and Dad. It goes back in a long history.

“What I love about the BRCF is that they not only honour those who have done these things in the past, they hand out money in the present and there’s nothing but a bright future that lays ahead.”

After the live auction, Jones auctioned a half of a beef, donated by he and his wife.

The beef itself is donated directly to the Flagstaff Food Bank, but those present could also contribute $100 each to the BRCF as part of the donation.

Two of the Mosers four sons were able to come, and both Justin and Adam thanked their parents. “We appreciate all the time that you put in when I was a kid,” Justin said, adding that he didn’t fully appreciate it until he was doing it with his own kids.”

Adam Moser said, “It’s not every day you get a chance to roast your mom and dad.” He too thanked them for teaching him to contribute to his community.

Jack and Sharon Moser then had an opportunity to respond.

Jack said, “Jim, you did say this isn’t going to be a roast, and it isn’t. You are very dedicated to this foundation and it took you a long time... I asked you so many times ‘What part of no don’t you understand; I don’t want to do this?’

“Jim has been a true friend my whole life, even if he is from ‘across the creek’ I love the guy like the brother I never had.”

Jack told a story about when he and Sharon wanted to get married in Hawaii.

“Of course I had to go to my dad and tell him what was going on. That was my first mistake.

“He wouldn’t hear of it. What could be so stupid? He said getting married was a big deal.

“He told me, ‘You’re going to get married in a church, not on a beach; you’re going to have a reception.’

“At the time; I was 24 years old, I couldn’t understand that. I said ‘So what you’re saying is that we’re getting married

for you, not for us?’ And he said, ‘Someday, you’ll find out that life isn’t all about you.

“He said ‘Getting married over there is the most selfish thing you could ever do.’

At that time, I didn’t understand, but I do now.

“Looking back at the last 50 years, this town and area have been very good to me.

I’ve made a living here, I’ve made a lot of mistakes here. My kids have grown up here, they went to school here, they played their sports here. This is home.

“This community doesn’t owe me anything; I owe this community. To everyone here, thank you for coming out, we really appreciate the crowd.”

Sharon spoke next. “What a privilege it is that Jack and I are being honoured here this evening by the BRCF. “We have been aware of the foundation since it was established, and through the years we have attended dinners and donated to some of the funds. As we are aware today, it would have been Ken Drever’s 93rd birthday today. What better way to honour his memory than coming together for a Foundation dinner?

“Mr. Drever was a valued member and made a lasting impact along Highway 13, and he continues to do so today because of his belief and the support of his family, friends, community, and the BRCF. He is but one of many who built and contributed to the Foundation. There are those who have gone before, those who are currently serving on the board. Each one is leaving a legacy.

“I would like to gratefully acknowledge those who do the work to continue on the mission which sponsors the spirit of giving.”

“We live in a small town. But we have done some pretty great things here. I look back at some of the people who I was privileged to volunteer alongside, and who are no longer here with us.

She talked about other Killam volunteers, who have now passed away, who inspired her. “All of these people were invested in their community and were always willing to step up and get the job done.

“I couldn’t have had better mentors. I have worked alongside many of you here this evening. I would not be here tonight without you, as together, we have made things happen.

“No person is an island. We are all part of a bigger community, and by working together we can contribute and continue to make this a great place to live.”

The Jack and Sharon Moser fund created at the dinner is a living fund, which can be grown through future contributions to this fund in honour of the Mosers or in memory or in honour of any loved one at any time.
